Today I visited Dorich House Museum in Kingston Vale, West London, which is the former home of modernist Estonian sculptor Dora Gordine (1895-1991) and is full of her excellent artworks. It's free to visit and pretty cool if you're in the area.

Dorich Museum

So, it’s our very last time to perform during lunch time concert. And we had the privilege to perform at a beautiful museum.

I manage to do two performance with Jasmine and Tina. Played a folk Chinese accompaniment for Jasmine and pop-song for Tina.

We were so glad to do a performance at Dorich Museum! Loving these people! ❤️

A Brief History of the Fairy Tale (Part 1)

The concept of a wife being found for a member of royalty through the intervention of a shoe far predates the 17th century French fairy tale. The earliest iteration of the story was mentioned by Strabo, a Greek historian and geographer, in his account of his Egyptian travels. In the first century BCE, he wrote a brief account of the story of Doriche, or Rhodopis (“rosy-cheeked”), who became the king’s wife after an eagle stole her sandal and dropped it in his lap. As with many legendary historical figures, there is speculation over Rhodopis’ true identity. About 100 years ago, Olive Beaupre Miller adapted this ancient account into The Egyptian Cinderella, a children’s story that blends the modern fairy tale with Strabo’s account.

Some of these characters that were not included in the Egyptian legend (including the evil stepmother) were included in the traditional Chinese folktale, The Golden Carp. Written by Duan Chengshi in the 9th century CE, this story is much more similar to our Western fairy tale, including forced servitude by the stepfamily, animal friendship, a magical gown, and the lost slipper. There are a few key elements that make this iteration unique. Firstly, there is no fairy godmother. The magical gown comes from the bones of Ye Xian’s fish friend who was killed and eaten by her stepmother. Secondly, there was no ball; the central event in this story is the Spring Festival, which was a time during which many picked their spouses. Thirdly, the king had never met with Ye Xian, even briefly. The lost slipper was brought to him by a merchant, and he was enamored with its small size, which led him to try to find and marry its owner.

These are the two stories that are often cited as the basis for the stories that developed into our modern Cinderella. It is unknown when the story travelled from Egypt to China, and from Egypt or China to Europe. In my next post, we will take a look at the European versions of the story.

Can't believe I’ve still never been inside Highpoint! Grade I listed Modernist apartment blocks retaining many original features. The client for Highpoint was Sigmund Gestetner, the owner of a company that manufactured office equipment. Gestetner had been interested in building housing for his workers but when he lost the proposed site in Camden he agreed to commission Lubetkin & Tecton to design a commercial block of apartments.
