June 23rd, 2019 || My #indiebookshopweek was too successful 😬 I had less time than I intended and only managed to visit four bookshops of all the ones I wanted to go to but oh, well. . My first stop was @blackwellshighholborn and got 🌻On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong🌻 because I keep hearing such amazing things and want to see what all the hype is about. . My second stop was @persephonebooks and I went in knowing that I wanted a Dorothy Whipple novel because I have previously read Someone at a Distance and loved it. There are so many titles available by her but decided to get 🌻They Were Sisters🌻 and see if I love it as much as Someone at a Distance. I also got a gorgeous totebag. . The third bookshop I went to was @gaysthewordbookshop and I just went crazy and got three books but they just had an incredible selection and couldn’t resist. I got: 🌻The Prince and The Dressmaker by Jen Wang which I believe features a gender fluid main character. 🌻On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden, about a girl who travels to the ends of the universe to find a long lost love. 🌻I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver, an ownvoices story about a nonbinary main character whose parents thrown them out. I have already started it and so far, so good. It’s YA. . And my last stop was @lrbbookshop where I got a signed edition (🎉🎉) of Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, a book that follows 12 characters. The reviews have been great so far, so I have high hopes for it. . And after a hectic day I went to Foyles for a much needed rest and managed to just sit at the cafe and get some reading done before having to go back home. That’s what I call a successful day! 🙌🏼 . Ah, the sophisticated pleasure of reading a Persephone book 🥰 I feel like a high-born lady while reading a book by this publisher. Also, I trust their choice 100% 😉 “Someone at a Distance” by Dorothy Whipple is a book about an affair, a femme fatale taking away a devoted father and husband. Honestly, I’m so not interested to read about affairs 😒(probably the reason why I haven’t read “Anna Karenina”or “Madame Bovary” yet) But! 😞 Una famiglia in cui si fanno male a vicenda. 👉🏻 #lesorellefield Lucy, quasi quarantenne, vive con il marito William, in campagna. Una mattina riceve una gioiosa notizia: le sorelle, Vera e Charlotte, andranno a trovarla. È così che inizia la storia di una famiglia complessa. Tre sorelle, una diversa dall’altra, tutte sposate ma non tutte felicemente. 👍🏻 Vera è sprezzante, non ha problemi a dire ciò che pensa, è anche molto affascinante, fa girare la testa a tutti gli uomini che la incontrano. Charlotte è più calorosa, responsabile, mite, forse troppo. Lucy è insicura, l’unica senza figli e l’unica che avrebbe potuto essere una madre meravigliosa. 👎🏻 Charlotte ha sposato un uomo tremendo, non è violento, la sua crudeltà sta nel logorarli con le parole e i fatti, riesce a distruggere ogni singolo componente della famiglia, figli compresi. Questo ho odiato: l’incapacità di Charlotte di difendersi ma soprattutto di difendere i figli. Il marito li traumatizza proprio e lei non riesce nemmeno a chiedere aiuto alle sorelle, è una delle figlie a farlo. 👍🏻 Una narrazione scorrevole tanto che sono sprofondata tra le pagine del libro senza accorgermi del tempo che passava. 👍🏻 La storia di tre sorelle, da quando erano piccole, all’età adulta. Vediamo a confronto i loro matrimoni, vite piene di gioie ma anche di difficoltà e pene. 👎🏻 Il finale è in sospeso, nel senso che a un certo punto la storia si ferma di colpo. Whether the story is 6 or 60 pages long, the author is very skilled at evoking emotion in such a way that the reader may both be left breathless and deeply affecting. This is the great skill of Dorothy Whipple, to take as seemingly uninteresting a topic as quiet, everyday life and make it into the most fascinating and engaging material. However it is not a high- handed philosophy- it is a vision of a wise woman. After World War Two, England witnessed numerous social changes - these are outlined subtlety in the book.
