“I don't know how to love my friends in a way friend loves a friend; I only love them like they're part of me, like a parent loves their child;
with a fear they'll fell off a bike, with a fear they'll cut themselves out as they grow apart
and if they throw rocks at you, you'll still be a mother, you'll still lick their wounds, and you'll still cry alone behind closed doors
maybe that's a definition of a bad parent, but all I know is that I've been a parent my whole life; and I wish you had a better friend.
and I wish you had a better mother.”

I’ve been trying to finish that book since last year and so far I’m like halfway through with it. It has some of those heavy themes that make you relate to a book and unable to finish it in one sitting at the same time. I love how it tackles generational trauma and identity loss through random flashbacks that make you go: “Oh, I get why they behaved that way”. I feel like I annotated it a lot because of how relatable these quotes are despite the cultural differences. #bookstagramhay #bookblogger #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookphotography #bookstagram #onearthwerebrieflygorgeous #oceanvuong #reading #readersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpx0gDytCy1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

That time, in third grade, with the help of Mrs. Callahan, my ESL teacher, I read the first book that I loved, a children's book called "Thunder Cake" by Patricia Polacco. In the story, when a girl and her grandmother spot a storm brewing on the green horizon, instead of shuttering the windows or nailing boards on the doors, they set out to bake a cake. I was unmorred by this act, it's precarious yet bold refusal of common sense. As Mrs. Callahan stood behind me, her mouth at my ear, I was pulled deeper into the current of language . The story unfurled, it's storm rolled in as she spoke, then rolled in once more as i repeated the words. To bake a cake in the eye of a storm; to feed yourself sugar on the cusp of danger.

"I am writing because they told me to never start a sentence with because. But I wasn't trying to make a sentence—I was trying to break free. Because freedom, I am told, is nothing but the distance between the hunter and its prey."

May 31st, 2020 || MAY READING WRAP-UP📚 . Here are all the books I read in May. The majority of my reads were written by Asian authors due to the Asian readathon. I have post mini-reviews here for some of them and also on my instagram if you fancy having a look. Some of the books I read were ebooks and since my e-reader died on me and I'm too lazy to charge it, they are not pictured. . 🌿The Complete Chi's Sweet Home, Part 1 by Konami Kanata (8/10). 🌿All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison (8/10). 🌿The Beast Player by Nahoko Uehashi (6.5/10). 🌿The Map of Salt & Stars by Zeyn Joukhadar (DNF). 🌿The Magical Language of Others by E.J. Koh (8.5/10). 🌿Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer (7/10). 🌿Emma by Jane Austen (a reread - 8/10). 🌿Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong (9/10). 🌿On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (5.5/10). 🌿A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry (9.5/10). 🌿How Much of These Hills Is Gold by C.Pam Zhang (7/10). . Of the ebooks, I have purchased a physical copy for All Among the Barley, The Magical Language of Others and Minor Feelings after reading them because they were that good. The top 5 books I read this year. Cheers to another year (and decade) of fantastic stories and the discussions they create. To the surprise of exactly no one, #TheSongOfAchilles is 1. #Circe is 2. #OnEarthWereBrieflyGorgeous is 3. #Bloom is 4. #LittleFiresEverywhere is 5. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6vlBYQpWWf/?igshid=1dy3jouh7ausq
