SOU0114 by Stanley Short Via Flickr: It is October, 1974 and southbound Southern manifest No. 153 is westbound on Chesapeake & Ohio's Washington Subdivision near Keswick, VA, led by SD45 No. 3108. The evening before, a northbound Southern manifest derailed near Calverton, dropping about 25 to 30 cars. Southern, always mindful of expediting freight, detoured several trains in each direction. No. 153 came down the RF&P from Potomac Yard to Doswell, then west on the C&O to Charlottesville before regaining home rails.

STAY TUNED
WF UPDATE (7/23/22).
It’s Saturday night. Here’s the update since my last post.
On Thursday, we had a fun (and exhausting) day at the Kings Dominion amusement park. We were there for seven hours of action.
Yesterday (Friday), we moved the party from Doswell, VA to Hershey, PA. Along the way, we stopped at the famous Luray Caverns. We were there with my extended family (and Child #1) thirty-five years ago (Child #1 was 3 months old). As you sit in the parking lot, you’d never know that there is a wonderland beneath you. We also made several other fun stops.
Today, we were joined at the campground by Grandkid #3 and her Mother- - also known as Child #3. The six of us had a fun day at the campground. Because the campground is associated with Hershey Park, there are scheduled activities all day long. We were so busy that we didn’t even realize that it was 93 degrees!
I won’t try to describe the fun that we had at Kings Dominion, or Luray Caverns, or at Hershey Campground today. The experiences are not describable. You have to be there.
I will comment on two things that I didn’t have time to cover in my last post.
We needed gas when we were driving from North Carolina to the campground at Kings Dominion. We were on I-95, and I saw a sign that said there was a gas station at the upcoming exit. I pulled off onto the very long exit ramp. There was a stop sign at the end of the ramp, and another little sign which said that the gas station was to the left. I could see that we were in the middle of nowhere. I looked both ways, and there was no traffic. There was, however, a guy coming from my right on a little lawn tractor. The guy was a good distance away, so I made the left and drove about 200 yards to the gas station. I pumped 45 gallons of gas into the RV and visited the restroom. As I was walking out the door of the gas station, the guy on the tractor pulled up to a pump and started to fill his tank! What a weird sight! I had to know how far the guy had driven. That’s how I met Hal. He’s about 60 years old and he wears a huge straw hat. He told me that he rode about half a mile to get to the gas station. He said that he could take his truck and fill a gas can, but he prefers to ride on the tractor. He makes the trip regularly. I offered to pay for his gas. He declined, saying that such a kindness would make him feel “uneasy.” Besides, he said, he was also going inside to buy cigarettes and two Monster Energy drinks. What a cool guy. I’m happy that I met Hal. Meeting guys like Hal is one of the pleasures of life on the road.
I’m not happy about something that I learned at the Science Museum in Richmond. (This happened just before our great lunch at the burger place.) Did you know that your face is crawling with face mites? Well, it’s true. I watched a whole video that was done by a scientist who has devoted her whole career to the study of face mites. She collects samples by scraping faces with a small spoon. She has collected thousands and thousands of samples. She has traveled the world to collect face mites. Clusters of face mites have the same body chemistry. Your face mites are probably identical to the face mites that are crawling on the faces of the other members of your household. Your neighbor’s home is probably inhabited by face mites with a different body chemistry. The whole subject makes my skin crawl. I guess that’s because my skin actually is crawling. Learning stuff like this is one of the risks of being on the road.
We’re in Hershey for a few more days. Stay tuned.
