Taking Care of Business (Chapter Thirty-Seven)

Summary: The Mandalorians, led by Bo-Katan and (Y/N), come to the aid of Nevarro and take on Pirate King Gorian Shard’s forces.

Chapter Thirty-Seven The Pirates (Previous Chapter)

Tugging her fingerless gloves on and double-checking that R5-D4 was secured into the droid port, (Y/N) glanced over at Grogu seated beside her on the edge of the starfighter’s cockpit and arched an unsurprised brow. “I take it your dad wasn’t able to convince you to stay behind, huh?”

Grogu cooed and continued eating his breakfast of bantha jerky while the Mandalorian fighters gathered in front of the Gauntlet; a moment later, Din and Bo-Katan emerged from the cave and Din crossed behind the group to lean against the starfighter while Bo-Katan stood beside the extended gangplank. “This is a Kom’rk Class fighter transport. I’ll use this to drop you in and you will operate as a tight military unit; Captain (Y/L/N) and myself will reinforce from above. If everyone acts as they should, we can use the element of surprise and defeat an enemy that outnumbers us.” The Nite Owl surveyed the group assembled before her. “If everyone’s ready, then we’ll leave for Nevarro at once.”

The Mandalorians that were joining their mission said their goodbyes to the covert members staying behind and filtered onto the Gauntlet, and Clan Mudhorn climbed into the starfighter and charted their course to Nevarro. “Are you guys sure you don’t wanna sit this one out?” (Y/N) asked as she hovered her hand over the edge of the windshield. “It’s gonna get a little dicey up there.”

“And we’ll be right with you when it does, alor’ad.” Din reached up and slid the windshield closed before guiding her hands onto the controls and placing his hands on her waist. “This is the Way.”

(Y/N) smiled to herself as she switched the engines on and piloted the starfighter up into the clear blue sky, spotting the Gauntlet following after them and switching the communication radio on. “Okay, Bo, I’ve sent over the coordinates.”

“Copy that, Captain. I’ll see you in hyperspace.” The ships flew through the planet’s upper atmosphere and entered hyperspace the moment they reached the darkness of space; while the bright blue lights swirled around both ships, a hologram of the battle plan was beamed into their cockpit from the Gauntlet. “Pirate King Gorian Shard is captaining a Cumulus Class Corsair carrying a complement of snubfighters. It has aerial bombardment capabilities. The N-1 will distract the Corsair and her snubfighters as we drop in to liberate the planet below.” Bo-Katan’s voice was clear and assured as she briefed their fighters, and (Y/N) could easily imagine her leading Mandalore in its prime. “Nevarro is an independent planet and no longer under remnant Imperial or New Republic protection, but it’s that very independence that makes it appealing for you to settle. You lived there once, hiding in the sewers. But now, you can be heroes.”

Taking a deep breath, (Y/N) squared her shoulders and guided the starfighter out of hyperspace, piloting down through the upper atmosphere of Nevarro as the corner of her curved upwards into a self-assured smirk. “This is where the fun begins.” She pushed down on the controls and the starfighter shot forward, speeding through the sky as she steered them towards Gorian Shard’s Corsair hovering above the bombed-out city; she fired on the starship and spun the starfighter around for another pass. “If that didn’t scug ‘em off, then this definitely will.” She navigated the starfighter under the Corsair and fired on the starship’s gunwales; several of the gunwales were destroyed in a fiery explosion and as she moved in for another pass, three snubfighters launched into the air after her. “That seemed to do it!”

“Bold of you to return, Captain (Y/L/N).”

(Y/N) rolled her eyes at Vane’s threatening tone. “What can I say? I’m a bold woman.” She jammed the communication radio’s signal to the pirates’ snubfighters and swerved out of the way of their blaster fire. “You two might wanna hold on tight from here on out.”

Grogu giggled in delight when she flipped the starfighter over to dodge another round of blaster fire while Din’s gloved hands tightened on her waist. “Maybe we can convince Peli to install a seismic charge launcher on the N-1 the next time we’re in Mos Eisley. That is, if an ex-smuggler can handle a bounty hunter’s weapon.”

“Oh, you’ll find that ex-smugglers can handle anything that’s thrown their way,” (Y/N) replied with a growing smirk at their usual teasing. “Unlike hot-head bounty hunters with something to prove.”

Before Din could respond, their friend’s familiar voice came through the starfighter’s communication radio. “Thanks for your help, you two.”

“We decided to take you up on your offer for a tract of land.”

“Be careful, my friends. They’ve got you outnumbered ten to one.”

(Y/N) increased their speed and at the very last second, she swerved to the side and triumphantly smiled when the snubfighter chasing them and the snubfighter charging towards them flew into one another and exploded in a fiery crash. “I like those odds.”

Greef chuckled at that. “I bet you do.”

Dodging the blaster fire coming from the Corsair, (Y/N) breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the starship flying away from the city. “The Corsair’s on me, Bo. Coast is clear.”

While the starfighter distracted the Corsair and its multitude of snubfighters, the Gauntlet hovered over the city and dropped their squadron of Mandalorian fighters before flying away. “Their launch was successful,” Din announced as he looked out the windshield. “Time to really scug these pirates off.”

“My pleasure.” (Y/N) wrenched the controls to the side and steered the starfighter into a tight corkscrew spin, deftly avoiding the snubfighter’s blaster fire and maneuvering out of the spin to fly over the Corsair and shoot down an oncoming snubfighter. Her grip tightened on the starfighter’s controls as she led their enemies over Nevarro’s lava flats and away from the city, smiling to herself when each and every snubfighter joined the pursuit. “That seemed to do the trick.”

“Captain, what’s your position?”

“We’re over the flats with snubfighters in pursuit,” (Y/N) replied and flew the starfighter through the rocky outcroppings with ease. “You’re clear to start your run.”

“You should ease up on the accelerator, make ‘em think that they actually have a shot at taking us down.”

She gave Din a playful look over her shoulder as she sharply turned a corner. “Are you back-seat flying, Din Djarin? Because I have a zero-tolerance policy that forbids back-seat flying from Mandalorians who have a history of crash-landing onto several planets.”

“Mir’sheb.” Her husband’s chuckles were interrupted by Grogu’s urgent squeal and he swore under his breath. “They’re peeling off. They know we’re the diversion.”

Biting her lip, (Y/N) wrenched the controls upwards and shot out of the canyon as she called into the communication radio, “Bo, you’re about to have five snubfighters on your tail. I’m on my way to back you up.”

“Copy that, Captain.”

The starfighter raced through the sky towards the Corsair and when she saw the five snubfighters pursuing the Gauntlet, she steered them into a nosedive and checked to make sure that the child was being held by Din before flying straight up; she shot down a snubfighter and sped straight through their formation, scattering the remaining four ships and shooting down a second and a third on her descent. As the ship’s remains crashed into the Corsair and destroyed one of its engines, Grogu giggled in delight and Din murmured more words of affirmation while the Gauntlet shot down another snubfighter, leaving Vane’s ship as the last one standing; (Y/N) broke out into a triumphant smile when the pirate’s ship suddenly turned and flew away from the fight, but her triumph was short-lived when she saw the Corsair being steered above the city and its gunwales began firing on the buildings below.

“He’s targeting the townspeople!”

“We’ve gotta take him down,” (Y/N) replied, looping the starfighter around and racing towards the attacking Corsair. “Focus fire on their last engine!”

With (Y/N) approaching from the bow of the Corsair and Bo-Katan approaching from the stern, they both fired on the starship’s last operational engine and sped away as it burst into flames and slowly crashed onto the planet’s surface in an impressive explosion. Exhausted, (Y/N) flopped back against Din’s chest and switched the controls over to R5 before closing her eyes, smiling tiredly when she heard Grogu’s enthusiastic babbling and felt the brief but loving caress of her husband’s lips on her temple. I don’t remember flying being this tiring during the Rebellion, she thought to herself as the starfighter began its descent, but it’s nice to know I’ve still got it.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Greef Karga exclaimed over the cheers of the townspeople. The citizens of Nevarro and their Mandalorian saviors were gathered by the city’s ruined archway near the docked Gauntlet, while the members of Clan Mudhorn stayed towards the back with the starfighter; (Y/N) stood on the starfighter’s side panel while Din stood on the ground, one of his gloved hands resting on her calf while the other shaded Grogu’s face from the bright sun, and all three of them listened as the High Magistrate addressed the celebrating crowd. “To all of you, and especially to our fine Mandalorian liberators, to whom this planet is forever indebted.” Greef turned to look at the gathered Mandalorians and offered them a welcoming smile. “Mandalorians, I know that we have been on opposite sides in the past, but that is behind us. From this day forward, I, Magistrate Greef Karga-”

“High Magistrate, sir.”

The crowd laughed at the protocol droid’s correction and Greef chuckled good-naturedly. “High Magistrate Greef Karga, hereby cede all land from the western lava flats to Bulloch Canyon to the fine people of Mandalore. You may no longer have a home planet, but you do now have a home. Welcome!”

The citizens of Nevarro burst into applause and the assembled Mandalorians crossed their right arms over their chests, bowing their helmeted heads in a show of respect. “Well, I guess we should start unloading the Gauntlet’s cargo hold…”

When (Y/N) attempted to hop down from the starfighter’s side panel, her stiff legs gave way but thanks to Din’s quick reflexes, she landed neatly in her husband’s strong arms. “The rest of us will handle the cargo hold, alor’ad; you’ve more than earned your rest.”

“It’s hard to argue with that,” She chuckled, giving the beskar covering his cheek a kiss as he cautiously set her on her feet and gathering Grogu into her arms before allowing him to lead her over to the Gauntlet’s extended ramp.

Seated on a cargo box, (Y/N) scrolled through Greef Karga’s official holo-pad while the Mandalorians and the citizens of Nevarro began working to build a camp on the outskirts of the bombed-out city; she’d hoped that the High Magistrate’s resources would help her find any information on Kelleran Beq and his possible ties to Naboo, but her search proved to be fruitless and she was still reluctant to ask the child any more questions about his past, fearing that they’d only serve to re-traumatize him.

“No luck?”

(Y/N) sighed and set the holo-pad aside before looking over at Din, who was busy sorting through boxes of blaster cartridges beside her. “I don’t know why I’m expecting anything different. The Jedi were forced into hiding nearly thirty years ago, so it’s not as though they’d make themselves easy to find.”

Before Din could reply, Grogu’s curious coos drew their attention towards two Mandalorians making their way through the makeshift camp: the Armorer and – to (Y/N)’s stunned surprise – a helmetless Bo-Katan Kryze. The Nite Owl looked uncomfortable under the heavy stares of her fellow Mandalorians, clutching her helmet to her side and doing her best to ignore the murmurs that followed them as they made their way towards (Y/N) and Din. Both Mandalorians stopped before them, and the Armorer loudly announced, “Bo-Katan Kryze is going off to bring other Mandalorians in exile to us, so that we may join together once again.”

“But she shows her face,” Paz pointed out, and the surrounding Mandalorians nodded in agreement and continued to talk amongst themselves.

The Armorer was unaffected by her covert’s reactions. “Bo-Katan walks both worlds, and she can bring all tribes together.” Shifting his weight, Paz looked over at Din and relaxed his shoulders when he gave him a single nod. “It is time to retake Mandalore.”

Din looked down at (Y/N) and once she gave him a subtle nod, he turned his attention back to the Mandalorians standing before them. “(Y/N) and I will accompany you on your quest to locate the exiled Mandalorians.” Despite the shocking turn of events and the mixture of emotions he was undoubtedly experiencing, Din’s modulated voice was clear and steady as he continued. “This is the Way.”

Bo-Katan offered them a thankful smile. “This is the Way.”

Grogu let out a series of babbles and coos, and (Y/N) found herself nodding in agreement. “You’re right, little guy: it’s certainly been one helluva day…”

(I just wanna preface this by saying I know basically next to nothing about fixing cars or motorcycles lol so if there are any inaccuracies I apologise for that!)

“… missing case last night has been reported to local law enforcement. Identified as North Carolina-born Mark Fisher, the 33 year old was last seen drinking at a bar in Downings before he disappeared without a trace. This again marks another in a series of disappearances that has concerned the public, with some expressing worries that it is the work of a serial killer or a human trafficking ring. Police are still investigating if these cases are conne-“

Max groaned and fiddled with the knob of the radio, a dusty yellow rag over his hand to prevent the grease from staining it. Switching over to the local rock station, he smiled as Motörhead’s ‘Stay Clean’ replaced the uncomfortable chatter of the news; Lemmy’s thundering bass was always more reassuring to hear.

Especially now, the small voice in his head whispered to him. He was reminded of exactly what he did last night; an impulse brought on at least in part by his victim’s poor treatment of Debbie, the waitress at his favourite diner. It might not have been the wisest idea to kill again after the last time, but at least now his hunger pangs had subsided. With Mark he’d sated them till’ the next month.

Shaking his head to disperse those thoughts, Max’s hands came to rest again on the shiny bronze chrome of the Chevrolet in front of him. She’d come in with a nasty dent in her bumper from a collision. Thankfully nothing serious, but the guy had mentioned she just up and stopped on him. Not a problem you’d really want to ignore either way. His boss Jerry had her first, mentioned ‘some issue with the fan-belt’ he’d sorted out. She just needed some little fixes and then she’d be good to go, he’d said.

Max gave her engine another look over, wanting to be sure he’d gotten everything. Any other issues would probably show up when he started her up in a test-drive later. His keen ears picked up everything, so he knew when a car didn’t sound right. It was something Jerry had no idea Max got from his lycanthropy; he only knew it was another helpful addition to his toolkit when he hired him.

“… Max!” For a second he thought he heard a voice shouting over the din and he raised his head. By the office door of the workshop was his coworker, Leo, leaning against a cluttered tool cabinet. Max turned down the radio a tad.

“Oh, yeah, Leo. What’s up?” Max perked up a bit at the appearance of his work buddy, the only other person employed at the shop aside from him.

The younger man seemed to be preparing himself to ask him a question. Leo was a bit of a nervous type, so Max was used to the way he tended to need reassurance now and again. He seemed to try and wring his hands out on an oil-stained tank top, a futile endeavour.

“Hey man, just double-checking to be sure… You’re still free for our campaign on Saturday night, right?”

“Yeah!” He exclaimed with a toothy grin, sharp canines on display.

The subject of D&D had come up in a conversation over drinks the other night. He had reminisced over playing with his friends back in highschool and Leo expressed a desire to learn more about the game. Max was excited at the prospect of playing again, and gladly offered to teach him and his two younger sisters the joys of D&D. In all honesty, he really missed it. It had been years since he properly sat down and played at a real table. Although he’d probably be the DM so he could guide them in their first campaign, the thought still made him giddy inside.

“I got somethin’ brewing up that’s more beginner friendly” Max continued, blue eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. He took his hands off the car to gesture wildly, an old habit “I’m a bit rusty myself after so long not havin’ played, so I could probably use a good refresher too.” He admitted with a wry quirk of the lip.

“Thanks for letting me know… Joan an’ Jessie are real excited about the whole thing. Wouldn’t stop badgerin’ me about it an’ asking me if you were still comin.’” Leo scratched the back of his neck, seeming eager to shift the blame onto the twins.

“Not that I’m not lookin’ forward to it too!” He added hastily, big brown eyes as wide as saucers.

“Don’t worry, I ain’t gonna miss something like that.” Max assured him, chuckling. Leo nodded bashfully, then cast his gaze over to inspect the Chevrolet still docked in the workshop lift.

“…Front tire on that’s gonna need a bit of pumpin.’ I’ll go get er.’” Then he ducked back in to look for the necessary equipment.

That was Leo: real shy, but good with cars.

After work Max peeled off his grimy coveralls, replacing them with his usual washed out denim jeans and a black leather jacket. It was approaching Summer, and the warm sun beat down on the cracked pavement. Still, a cool spring breeze necessitated extra layers. Especially with his ride…

He rounded the corner toward where he’d left her, and he smiled as she came into view; his beloved Harley Davidson. Her glossy red paint was unmistakable, metal exhaust pipes gleaming in the sunlight.

He felt no shame in admitting she was his pride and joy; he had fixed her up himself, and she’d been with him for years now. Feeling the wind whip past him as he went 20 over the speed limit on the back of her was exhilarating beyond all words could express.

Max jogged over and fished his keys out of his pocket, resting his palm on the black leathered handlebar. A dark-visored helmet rested on the seat. Snatching it up, he shook his hair out of his ponytail, his tousled blond curls still damp from sweat.

He kicked his leg over to start the girl up, and soon the fierce growl of her engine reverberated through his bones. She purred mightily, spitting fumes all the way down the road as he headed back home.

As he came up to his house Max was pleasantly surprised to see Jack’s rusty blue pickup truck parked in the driveway. He definitely hadn’t been expecting him. Of course, Jack wasn’t the type to give prior notice before he called in, (Maybe that would dampen his mysterious appeal) so Max just gave him his own key so he could come and go as he pleased. Now he was used to receiving random visits from the elder lycan.

Max could see the dim light of his television through the window as he parked beside Jack’s truck, so he hurried to unlock the door and catch up with him.

“Hey, Jack!” He called out cheerfully as he hung up his jacket. There was no answer from the taciturn Jack. Max was used to that too.

Entering the kitchen, he saw the silver-haired man standing in the doorway to his living room. He was watching Judge Judy with a beer in his hand, technicolour light reflecting off his wolfish golden eyes.

“How are ya?” He tried again.

No response. Jack kept his eyes on the TV as he took a swig of the bottle.

Max shrugged and opened the door to his mini fridge, pulling out a cold beer of his own. A sharp hiss cut through the air as he pried off the bottle cap. He tried to ignore the tension in the air as he gulped down a mouthful. It tasted less refreshing than it should have.

Jack swivelled his head around, slowly, to look at him from out of the corner of his eye. There was an old scar on his face, one he never spoke about.

“Heard what ya did on the news…” He finally said.

Max froze. He felt his whole body tense up instinctively before he forced himself to relax. Jack knew. Jack understood; he wrestled with the same urges. All lycanthropes did. Still, they’d had a silent agreement never to speak of what he did.

“...Yeah?” His voice came out quietly, treading carefully.

Jack turned his attention back to the TV again, leaving him to stare down at the floor

Max resisted the urge to sigh. This is what he hated the most: the long, drawn out scoldings.

“… I don’t disagree with the choice you made. If anything, that man probably had it comin.’” That made Max look back up again, hopefully.

“But kiddo, there are consequences to livin’ like we do. Don’t forget that.”

Jack sent a pointed look his way, “Jus’ don’t get caught… Keep your nose clean, ya hear me?” He reached out a rough, calloused hand to pat Max on the shoulder. A little harder than necessary, perhaps for emphasis.

Max nodded obediently, swallowing the lump of beer in his throat. He supposed that wasn’t so much of a scolding as it was advice. Jack seemed to feel some responsibility for any mistakes Max made. Compared to him, he was only a pup, after all. And he had lived a long life, longer than any human could hope to live.

The rest of the night there was no more talk of the killings, which Max was grateful for. He offered to cook dinner for the two of them, and they ended up reminiscing again about the silly things he used to do when Jack first met him. Max grew lively again, recounting older stories from his childhood when he was even more of an idiot. This amused Jack greatly, even drawing out a rare chuckle from the older man.

Later he watched Jack’s truck kick dirt up on its way out of his driveway and down the road, waving goodbye as his words from earlier echoed in his mind.

Keep your nose clean, he’d said. He knew that he was just trying to tell him to be careful, and not attract too much attention with his meals.

He knew he wouldn’t stop doing it. He couldn’t. The world would be better off in the end, he convinced himself. But it was his accursed hunger that really controlled him in the end. He decided he’d continue to kill and feast on assholes like Mark, but after that he’d lick his chops and leave no evidence; otherwise his peaceful life in Downings would be over. Just like before.

Max wasn’t given to brooding over his problems either way, so he resolved to think no more of it for now. Instead he set himself about a far more appealing pastime: setting up his new campaign for Saturday…

I miss doing longform project writeups here; it's been a while! I recently replaced the old stock stereo in my 2009 car with a modern system (nothing fancy, just a super basic bluetooth stereo because I was tired of not having the AUX cable adapter for my phone since phone manufacturers decided to hamstring the world's phone users by removing AUX jacks).

It came out surprisingly affordable to upgrade, at $62 total! After-tax cost breakdowns:

Bluetooth stereo: $23

DIN dash trim (Metra brand): $20

Radio wiring harness (also Metra): $10

Antenna wiring harness (optional): $9

Replacing an older stereo is theoretically straightforward, but annoying in practice because you have no idea what you need until you actually open up the car and realize you were supposed to buy another simple part they didn't tell you about. I got mad and wrote this post up because I had already yanked the old stereo out of my car before realizing I was supposed to buy a wiring harness, and then my car dash had a big hole in it for a few days while I waited for it to ship.

What you need to wire up an aftermarket stereo:

The stereo kit, which should come with plugs that are compatible with the stereo itself

"Dash trim kit": the molded plastic piece on your dashboard that components are mounted into. It should be made for your particular car. This is only necessary if your new stereo mount is different from your old stereo mount.

"Radio wiring harness" (connects stereo to power & speakers) and "antenna wiring harness" (if you also want radio reception). These are sockets matching the proprietary connectors for the wires coming out of your car.I had to buy mine online because my car is 14 years old. If your car is newer then you may be able to find the parts at a local auto store.

Either soldering equipment (soldering iron, solder, electrical tape, wire stripper, and "helping hands"), or you pay someone else to install it for you, in which case you probably aren't reading this post lol

(My new stereo conforms to the "single DIN" dimension standard. DIN sizing is blessedly standardized across cars. Single DIN is the smaller size that lets you install a little snack compartment or drawer beneath your stereo, and double DIN is the bigger size that's usually used for a touchscreen.)

You probably can't just buy a single cable that will connect your new stereo directly into your car, for many reasons. Car manufacturers are based all over the world, and cars in general are extremely non-standardized. Different cars and stereos all use different plugs, and it would be too difficult for each stereo manufacturer to provide a different wiring harness for every possible car model out there.

Also, it is beneficial for every electrical connector in your dash region to be shaped differently, so that you can't accidentally plug it into the wrong socket. At first I was annoyed to see five totally different proprietary connectors when I opened up the dash, but after failing to label three of them, I was very glad that they were all different shapes.

So unless you wanna sit in your car soldering your stereo directly to your car with no takebacks, you probably want to make yourself that custom stereo<>car cable by getting the radio wiring harness & antenna wiring harness that fit your car model, then soldering them to the cable that came with your stereo kit. Thankfully my cables seemed to come with a standardized coloring scheme for the wires, so it was easy to match them up.

Tools you need to replace your old dash & stereo (I winged it with whatever was in my toolbox...but most people have fewer tools than me)

Either an auto trim remover kit, OR two small pry bars, a flathead screwdriver, and something long and flat such as a butter knife for leverage

Philips screwdriver -- a ratcheting one is helpful, but not required

Any additional tools as recommended by your car's service manual (or friendly local Youtube). For example, my car's service manual called for an 8mm socket wrench with a 6" extender to remove a bolt securing the stock radio.

Having two mini pry bars was helpful for taking off the retaining clips without breaking them. They are very fiddly.

Also, my stereo felt slightly wobbly in its thin sheet metal mount. So I stuffed a bit of cardboard between the stereo and the snack compartment as a makeshift shim, and am just crossing my fingers that something so close to the back of the engine won't catch on fire. Maybe the proximity to the AC helps.

Dinner Reservation

It was a quiet night at the mortuary, as Clara looked over some files, double-checking all the information before filing it away.

In another room, she could hear her coworker’s radio playing, providing background noise, as he worked on the bodies in the back.

With a sigh, Clara stood, stretching out her back and groaning as her spine popped. She yawned, stacking the files on her desk, before going down the hallway that led to the embalming room.

“Hey, Marcus,” Clara called, knocking on the door and opening it, so she didn’t startle him “I’m thinking of ordering some food, you want anything?”

Marcus looked up from where he was inspecting a cadaver’s hand, making a quick note, before replying “Yeah, sure, I can eat; what did you have in mind?”

“Pizza?”

“Sounds good; let me know when it’s here and I can give Mr. Anderson a break.”

Clara snorted, going back to the front.

A few minutes later, the order was placed and she was back to sorting her paperwork.

The phone suddenly ringing made her jump, dropping the papers in her hand.

“What the fuck, it’s three in the morning,” she muttered, holding one hand to her heart, the other reaching for the phone “Thank you for calling Evergreen Mortuary, how may I assist you?”

There was silence on the other end, but Clara could swear she heard shaky breathing and...was the other person crying?

“Hello?” she prompted “This is Clara from Evergreen Mortuary; how may I assist you?”

The other person let out a harsh breath, sniffling and breaking Clara’s heart in the process; she had a feeling Marcus would be getting an extra body to work on tonight.

“I...I n-need to,” the man on the other end coughed to clear his throat, though his voice was still a little rough “I need to make a dinner reservation.”

Clara blinked, perplexed; who calls a mortuary for a din....dinner reservation.

She drew a deep breath, sitting up straighter “Just a moment, sir.”

The phone was set down, Clara opening a drawer at her desk and pressing down on the false bottom, revealing a set of old-fashioned keys. Snatching them up, she made her way to a closet behind her desk.

A few minutes later, she returned, shoving her previous work to the side and laying out the new file and papers.

Pen poised in her right hand, Clara picked the phone back up “How many in the party?”

“One.”

“Name?”

“Mic-Michelangelo Hamato.”

Clara paused, something about the name sending a shudder of dread down her spine “Age?”

The man on the other end let out a laugh that quickly became a sob “Thir... Thirteen, as of three hours ago.”

‘Just a kid,’ Clara thought, taking a calming breath and continuing to fill out the paperwork for the next couple of minutes.

Marcus came out of the backroom, just as Clara was wrapping up the call “We’ll be there in thirty minutes, Mr. Hamato; is there anything else I can help you with?”

The click of the phone hanging up was the only answer Clara got, making her blink, startled, before she hung her own phone up.

“What was that about?” Marcus asked, going to grab some coffee “...Did you say Hamato?”

“Yeah,” Clara muttered, pulling out a cell phone and shooting off a few texts “dinner reservation.”

Marcus clicked his tongue, stirring some sugar into his coffee and pouring a second cup “That ain’t good.”

“No,” Clara accepted the cup that was handed to her, reading the texts she received “Especially since it’s for the younger one.”

“Oh, somebody fucked up.”

“Hey, I haven’t been in this business for long,” Clara looked up at her coworker, pulling out some creamer to put into her coffee “but ‘Hamato’ sounds familiar.”

“It should,” Marcus said, taking a drink “That was a name to fear, five years ago, before they retired.”

“They?”

“Three of ‘em,” Marcus turned when there was a knock at the front, going to open the door, while Clara dug out some cash “brothers. Hey, man, how’s it goin’?”

“Eh, could be better, could be worse,” the delivery man said, handing the pizza boxes over “nice night, not too much goin’ on, so on and so forth.”

“Awesome,” Marcus took the boxes, stepping to the side, so Clara could hand over the tip “wish we could say the same; just got a call that another body is comin’ in.”

“I could not work in a place like this,” the delivery man said, shivering “I don’t like seein’ fake dead bodies, never mind real ones.”

Marcus and Clara both laughed, bidding the delivery man goodnight and closing the door behind him.

“So, there’s three Hamato brothers?”

“Ah, yeah, so...”

So, this is really just me practicing with two of my OCs, but also a scene that had been in my mind for my John Wick au and it needed to be written.

Because, unlike Daisy, Mikey is not a pet that you can just bury in your yard after they die; he’s a person, a kid; Donnie, Raph, and Leo’s little brother.

Therefore, I had to come up with some way for Mikey’s body to be taken care of and I figured something similar to Charlie’s cleanup crew, but geared more toward funerary services. A mortuary seemed like the most appropriate setting for underworld services.

Alternate plan: simplify a normal wiring harness by simply not having 174 computers and an ipad built into the car. Decades of development and yet nobody has really created a better center console since the ‘80s. No known purpose for cars to have radar emitters and proximity alarms, just look around. I should really brush up on photoshop and make this meme. (I really like preaching to the choir haha)

I get where you're coming from but you have no clue what you're talking about. There is one "computer" if you'd like to call it that (it's really just a very sophisticated spreadsheet at it's core), and lots of sensors. Technically two if you count the TCM which is purely concerned with the automatic transmission.

Frankly there aren't even that many sensors, maybe a dozen or so which isn't a whole lot really. Cam, Crank, Knock, O2s, Oil Pressure, Coolant Temp, IAT, MAP/MAF, pedal position sensors, throttle position sensor, ABS, speed sensor sometimes, A/C sensors if you have A/C, and a few less common ones I probably forgot. And even all of these may not be in a certain vehicle.

Far more wires are used to run switches and controls than sensors to the ECM; like your lights, wipers, some climate controls, your cluster and all the lights in it, window switches, lock switches, power mirrors etc. This one varies way more dependent on the vehicle, some signal to the ECM and some might not and it changes from model to model.

Anyways, the typical wiring harness is already as simplified as it can be without affecting performance, reliability, safety, or all three. There isn't a whole lot more you can really do to trim down on the wires without deleting something actually worthwhile putting aside optionals like TPMS or collision detection stuff. The iDash usually isn't taking up more harness real estate that a console radio used to use to be fair, especially chonky double din radios.
