Road to Power Struggle 2019 Night 10 - 10/28/2019; Lion’s Break: Project 2 At CharaExpo 2019, Some Talents Announced; Liger, Tenzan in Dradition 10/25/2019 for Hiro Saito 40th Anniversary Match
Tumblr media
The tour continued today, with another full block of Super Jr. Tag League matches on offer. You can watch them now on NJPWWorld.
- 10/28/2019, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Karl Fredericks d. Yota Tsuji (Elevated Half-Crab, 7:12)
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Taichi, Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr. & DOUKI [SZKG] (Naito > DOUKI, Destino, 16:04)
Jay White, KENTA, Yujiro Takahashi & Gedo [Bullet Club] d. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS], Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS], Tomoaki Honma & Toa Henare (White > Henare, Blade Runner, 9:54)
Super Jr. Tag League 2019: El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Tiger Mask IV & Yuya Uemura (Desperado > Uemura, Numero Dos, 14:55)
Super Jr. Tag League 2019: Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. TJP [FREE] & Clark Connors (Phantasmo > Connors, Flying Squirrel, 11:13)
Super Jr. Tag League 2019: SHO & YOH [CHAOS] d. Volador Jr. & Titan [CMLL] (YOH > Titan, Dragon Suplex Hold, 16:25)
Super Jr. Tag League 2019: Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] d. Ryusuke Taguchi & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Ospreay > Romero, Stormbreaker, 22:13)
With these results, the current reigning junior tag champions are now solo at the top of the standings, but RPG3K still have a match in hand here, which will be this Wednesday. Backstage post-show, BUSHI challenged Will Ospreay to defend the IWGP Juniorheavyweight title against him, probably at Power Struggle?, so that gives that result away, as Ospreay probably won’t wrestle twice. On the other hand they could save it for the World Tag League Final. I don’t know. Probably Power Struggle, if I had to guess, so they can begin a big reveal to lead to WK14, maybe. Ahem.  Current standings:
Ishimori/Phantasmo: 10pts (5W 0D 1L) Taguchi/Romero: 8pts (4W 0D 2L) Desperado/Kanemaru: 8pts (4W 0D 2L) Birds Of Prey: 8pts (4W 0D 2L) RPG3K: 6pts (3W 0D 2L) Volador/Titan: 6pts (3W 0D 3L) Tiger/Uemura: 0pts (0W 0D 5L) TJP/Connors: 0pts (0W 0D 6L)

Contrary to what I’d written in the STARDOM acquisition blog post a week and a half ago, it appears that Bushiroad’s CharaExpo convention on 12/7 and 12/8/2019 in Anaheim, CA, will in fact hold Lion’s Break: Project 2, along with the STARDOM exhibition card. The graphic above heavily implies Katsuyori Shibata will be on the show, however his graphic is the only one which does not have the Lion’s Break logo on it, so hopefully they are wisely not having him wrestle on this, and he is merely a featured guest. The announced wrestling talents so far are: Ryusuke Taguchi, Rocky Romero, El Desperado, Taiji Ishimori, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and LA Dojo Young Lions Clark Connors, Alex Coughlin and Karl Fredericks. No matches have been announced for this yet, and only the one for the STARDOM exhibition, which hasn’t been added to the official CharaExpo program as yet from what I see.
The tickets for CharaExpo are on sale, but nothing about separate ticketing for Lion’s Break, or STARDOM. If I had to guess, it will be like last year’s, where anyone could get in for standing room (but buy for seating), but either way, you need to already have a badge for CharaExpo. That’d be my guess, anyway. More details as they come.

Jushin Thunder Liger and Hiroyoshi Tenzan took a detour into Tatsumi Fujinami’s Dradition promotion on Friday 10/25/2019 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall, all to celebrate the 40th Anniversary in wrestling of former NJPW star Hiro Saito. Liger teamed with Fujinami & Shiro Koshinaka in a special 6-man match for the occasion, with the other side being another nWo Japan reunion as Saito teamed with Tenzan and Keiji Muto. Masahiro Chono acted as a guest referee, wearing a black suit and shades because of course he would.
Chono’s antics as referee were heavily weighted towards his old nWo teammates, as he refused to give the babyfaces an even break, not even counting a submission when Saito tapped to a Fujinami Dragon Sleeper. Eventually, after a Shining Wizard from Muto joined with a Shining Black from Chono, Saito hit a senton on Fujinami, which Chono counted for three. Afterwards, Fujinami called out Riki Choshu from the back, but rather than continuing the melee, everyone involved said some nice words about Saito. Sounds like a fun one.
The tour takes a break tomorrow, then returns Wednesday, with Roppongi 3K’s Tag League match in hand.
- 10/30/2019, Shizuoka Twin Messe
Tomoaki Honma & Yota Tsuji v. TJP [FREE] & Karl Fredericks
Volador Jr. & Titan [CMLL] v. El Desperado & DOUKI [SZKG]
Jushin Thunder Liger & Clark Connors v. Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club]
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] v. Taichi, Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr. & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG]
Hirooki Goto [CHAOS], Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] & Toa Henare v. Jay White, KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
Super Jr. Tag League 2019: Tiger Mask IV & Yuya Uemura v. SHO & YOH [CHAOS]

Growing from the origins of Armerican wrestling, Puroresu (Professional Wrestling) has become rather big in Japan. Forming it’s own style, more based on “Fighting Spirit” and the wrestlers are know for their full contact strikes and less theatrics. This also makes for much more professional medical assistance next to the ring.
The first ever person to involve himself in wrestling was the former sumo wrestler Sorakichi Matsuda (born 1859), he became a feature attraction in America but failed to bring the sport to Japan. It wasn’t until 1951 that Japanese Korean Rikidōzan became the ‘Father of Wrestling’ in Japan. Rikidōzan bought nightclubs, hotels, condo’s and boxing promotions and started the very first professional wrestling promotion ‘Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance (JWA)’ in 1953. His death came early in 1963 at age 39 after he got in an altercation with a Yakuza member, who stabbed him. Rikidōzan could have survived if he had followed the doctors orders after surgery. Drinking and eating rapidly made him ill and he developed an inflammation of his abdomen which took his life. After his death many more wrestlers joined the scene and the matches have always been televised greatly in Japan.

  Puroresu
Of course there are a variety of rules within the puroresu, which varies in each country though there is a general standard to avoid confusion.
Matches are held between two or more sides (“corners”). Each corner may consist of one wrestler, or a team of two or more. Most team matches are governed by tag team rules (see below).
The match is won by scoring a “fall”, which is generally consistent with standard professional wrestling:
Pinning an opponent’s shoulders to the mat for the referee’s count of three.
Submission victory, which sees the wrestler either tap out or verbally submit to their opponent.
Knockout, the failure to regain composure at the referee’s command
Countout, the failure of a party to return to the ring at the referee’s command, which is determined by a count of twenty (some federations use ten, but in Japanese wrestling they use twenty).
Disqualification, the act of one wrestler breaking the rules.
Additional rules govern how the outcome of the match is to take place. One such example would be the Japanese Universal Wrestling Federation, as it does not allow pinfall victories in favor of submissions and knockouts; this is seen as an early influence of mixed martial arts, as some wrestlers broke away from traditional wrestling endings to matches in favor of legitimate outcomes. Another example is that most promotions disallow punches so a lot of wrestlers utilize open handed strikes and stiff forearms.
Besides these rules there are different types of wrestling,  Shootstyle (Full contact), Lucha Libre (Mexican form of freestyle wrestling with colorful masks) and Hardcore (Most rules don’t apply to hardcore wrestling, often taking place in unusual enviroments and ‘weapons’ such as tables, hammers, glass and other items are allowed.) are the main divisions withing the promotions.

NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022: Loads of Legends Appear For Celebratory Extravaganza; Kota Ibushi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan Out of Anniversary and New Japan Cup
Tumblr media
New Japan Pro Wrestling
Today was the 50th Anniversary event for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Although the actual date of the debut show was 3/6/1972, it’s not always strictly observed on that day. Nevertheless, it’s a long time for a pro wrestling company to be around (and it won’t be the only Japanese company observing that milestone, as All Japan Pro Wrestling is 50 this year as well). Through three ownerships and countless changing winds for the business, NJPW has weathered the storms, even during periods where it did not look like they would. Congratulations to them.
It was announced yesterday that neither Kota Ibushi nor Hiroyoshi Tenzan would be on this show, or in the New Japan Cup after all. Tenzan’s knee injury is still bothering him so that will pull him out. With that, the winner of Toru Yano v. Taichi will get a bye into the third round on forfeit. With Ibushi, it seemed like he was going to make it, but ultimately it was determined he would not be as fit as he should be given the nature of his injury. Ibushi is 39, he is not getting any younger. We may be seeing a decline in his ability to wrestle regularly at this stage, however as this show will prove, there are those far older who are still giving it a go. Great O-Khan now gets a forfeit win into the 2nd round, to face Taiji Ishimori. The fourth match on this show was changed as well, with Young Lions Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita stepping in.
Prior to the opening match, long time veteran NJPW ring announcer Hidekazu “Kero” Tanaka brought out a Who’s Who of former NJPW stars and legends. Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono, Tatsumi Fujinami, Seiji Sakaguchi, Norio Honaga (who would be a special referee during the 6th match), Akira Maeda (!!!), Jushin Thunder Liger, Kuniaki Kobayashi, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Kazuo Yamazaki, Wataru Inoue, Tiger Hattori, Shiro Koshinaka, Kengo Kimura, Riki Choshu, Milano Collection AT, Minoru Tanaka, Masahito Kakihara and Motoyuki Kitazawa were all in the ring, along with Kazuchika Okada. The original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama, gave a video message as he is not in good health to be appearing live (and neither is NJPW’s founder Antonio Inoki). Seiji Sakaguchi and Kazuchika Okada then gave short little statements, with Okada saying how nervous he was to be part of this historic event.
NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan (NJPWWorld)
EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi & SHO [Bullet Club] d. Tiger Mask IV, YOH [CHAOS] & Ryohei Oiwa (Yujiro > Oiwa, Pimp Juice, 6:35)
Bad Luck Fale, Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. Taichi [SZKG], TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] & Minoru Tanaka [GLEAT] (ELP > TAKA, Thunderkiss ‘86, 9:50)
CIMA, El Lindaman & T-Hawk [#STRONGHEARTS] d. El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI [SZKG] (CIMA > DOUKI, Meteora, 9:22)
Will Ospreay, Great O-Khan, Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare [United Empire] d. Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita (O-Khan > Fujita, Eliminator, 9:20)
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS], Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Shiro Koshinaka [FREE] (Shingo > Honma, Last Of The Dragon, 12:38)
Champion v. Champion Tag Match: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato (Goto > Taguchi, Shoto, 15:04)
NJPW 50th Anniversary Match: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS], Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tatsumi Fujinami [Dradition] d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG], Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] (Okada > Suzuki, Rainmaker, 18:12)
The babyfaces win the main, with Fujinami closing out the show with an “Ichi, Ni, San, DAAAA!” in tribute to Inoki. Okada and Tanahashi gave their own tributes to Inoki and the future of NJPW as well. Fujiwara and Suzuki kinda got each others’ goat through the match as well, with Fujiwara still trying to act as Suzuki’s trainer. Bishomon defeat Team Six or Nine in the annual Heavy v. Junior match, and it was a fun match, showing the triumph of four guys on the roster who’ve been seen as chronic underachievers or joke wrestlers.
GLEAT and #STRONGHEARTS showed out big on this show, with a tease of a singles match between Els Desperado and Lindaman, both champions in their companies.
Overall this was what the Anniversary show is supposed to do, make you feel good about NJPW and pro wrestling, with a lot of teases coming for the New Japan Cup 2022 tournament that starts tomorrow. I won’t be posting about it until Thursday, mind, but I think we’ll all be OK for it.
Tomorrow’s card:
New Japan Cup 2022
All shows on NJPWWorld
- 3/2/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: CIMA [#STRONGHEARTS] v. TAKA Michinoku [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tomoaki Honma v. YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Yuji Nagata v. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Togi Makabe v. Jeff Cobb [United Empire]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Toru Yano [CHAOS] v. Taichi [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Hiroshi Tanahashi v. YOH [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] v. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] v. El Desperado [SZKG]
While we are celebrating anniversaries, it’s also the 19th anniversary of Kenta Kobashi defeating Mitsuharu Misawa, at last, for a title, which was the beginning of one of the greatest title runs ever, Kobashi’s lone, 13-defense reign of the GHC Heavyweight title. Next year is the 20th anniversary for that; I will mark my calendar now to do a longer-form piece about it at some point.
That’s really it for today. WAVE ran today as well. Tokyo Joshi held a show at a swimming pool with one match yesterday so I don’t think I really need to get into that one.
Be back Thursday, which promises a new unit reveal in Dragon Gate.

Masked Matches of May IV : Tatsumi Fujinami vs. El Solitario, WWF Junior Heavyweight Title Match, September 23rd 1981, NJPW
Video link to the match on YouTube : https://youtu.be/jRC9NuFQVPE
Cagematch page for this match(Some matches won’t have this because they aren’t listed on Cagematch)
Who’s Who?
Tatsumi Fujinami
Tatsumi Fujinami is considered by many to be one of the best Puro talents to every lace up boots. At this time he was still a Junior Heavyweight and positioned that way. By this point Fujinami had won the NWA World International Junior Heavyweight Champion and WWF Junior Heavyweight Champion twice and was still holding the WWF Junior title. Soon he would grow past the Junior Heavyweight Division in 1983 capturing his first Heavyweight Title the WWF International Heavyweight Champion and later the UWA Heavyweight and even later than that becoming one of the main names associated with the IWGP Heavyweight title once that was made and became the main belt of NJPW in 1987. The only man to hold the belt more times than Tatsumi Fujinami is the more contemporary name Hiroshi Tanahashi.
Tatsumi Fujinami has a career full of classics, but probably became most widely known to The United States fanbase in 1991 when at an event called 1991 Starrcade in the Tokyo Dome Fujinami beat Ric Flair in a match where Flair put up his NWA Heavyweight Championship vs Fujinami’s own IWGP Championship. Fujinami would then go to The States to drop it back in a rematch where both put up belts again, this time Flair had the WCW to Fujinami’s NWA at an event titled WCW SuperBrawl - “Return Of The Rising Sun”.
NJPW worked with lots of companies over Fujinami’s tenure which meant he worked in places most might not think. UWA, Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, Stampede, Championship Wrestling From Florida, WCWA, WWF and ECW. He was in NJPW until in 2007 he decided to found his own promotion Dradition Pro Wrestling which is a fairly small indie company in Japan which he still owns to this day. He has worked at least 1 match each year in that promotion since founding it, though he has yer to work there in 2018.
El Solitario
As of the time this match happened El Solitario was the most seasoned of the four and the most famous. Being a star in EMLL and debuting in 1960 while the rest of the field all made their debuts in the 1970′s. So Solitario is the relative veteran here. Being a Mexican superstar while the rest of these guys were just starting to make an impact. Much like Solar a bit of Solitario’s history is lost to the record books. Though magazines and other publications from the 60’s and 70s featured him and his many peers. By the time Solitario was in this match he had already had 4 three hundred plus day reigns with 4 different UWA or NWA branded belts.
Sadly, unlike the rest of the guys in this match El Solitario is no longer with us. In 1986 at the age of 39 he suffered an injury in the ring. Which ended up resulting in internal bleeding, he died on the operating table. At the time one of the biggest names in Lucha Libre. Although he may be gone, his son El Hijo del Solitario continues to carry his legacy. Mostly in the indies, though he was in major companies all of the 90′s and into the early 2000′s. His son currently being 46 and age that the original Solitario sadly never saw.
How is the match?
Very very good, I’d say the best match covered so far this month. Fujinami has some excellent headscissors takedown and nice suplexes, with Solitario trying to slow down the contest and keep Fujinami from working the pace he likes by keeping him grounded. By modern standards this probably won’t blow anyone away, but it is one of the oldest matches we will cover this week. This is a continuation of these two having a long rivalry. This was the 3rd and final time the two met for the a belt. First was the UWA World Light Heavyweight Title which Solitario retained, then WWF Junior Heavyweight which ended in a tie which allowed Fujinami to retain and then this match where Fujiwara finally slays the luchador who he couldn’t put away last time. This match is a little shorter than I’d like with 12 minutes of action, but there two icons do a fine job within that given time. I don’t know if I’d call it great, but more than worth a watch to see two of the biggest guys from Mexico/Japan clashing.
