i finished reading dragomir mrsic's biography, där jag kommer ifrån (which to my knowledge has not been translated, but the title translates to "where i come from")

it's a deep, intriguing, sometimes funny book. mrsic tells us of his turbulent childhood: how he would get favored treatment by his parents who otherwise neglected his siblings, and how his two older siblings struggled with drug addiction. he talks about what it was like to grow up as a young immigrant boy of "the first generation of immigrants" in a swedish suburb; what it was like to be one of the troublemakers in school, but then finding ones place in training taekwondo and becoming a skilled and disciplined sportsman. mrsic also explains his way into a criminal lifestyle, how he became a career criminal for a good while despite the promising skills in taekwondo, and how he eventually would leave this destructive path and happened to get involved in acting, starting to make his earnings through honest work as an actor and a taekwondo teacher. throughout the book mrsic relates experiences in young adulthood and adulthood back to early memories from, and folklore in, yugoslavia: how his parents and "village priests" thought him to be a gifted child with a special purpose.

mrsic's biography was an interesting read and i might rate it a 7/10. the more interesting parts in my opinion would be the ones dealing with his teen years and young adulthood, describing robberies he comitted and how he lived whilst on the run from authorities and police, trying to dodge the consequences of such robberies. ✨️

Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and directed by Doug Liman, will be released on Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital on July 5th, it was announced today by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Edge of Tomorrow stars Oscar nominee Tom Cruise (the Mission Impossible films, Top Gun: Maverick) and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, The Adjustment Bureau).

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow was directed by Liman from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and based on the novel entitled “All You Need is Kill” by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Edge of Tomorrow was the first motion picture to be shot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Edge of Tomorrow was produced by Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, Jeffrey Silver, Gregory Jacobs and Jason Hoffs, alongside executive producers Doug Liman, David Bartis, Joby Harold, Hidemi Fukuhara and Bruce Berman, with Tim Lewis and Kim Winther serving as co-producers.

Major Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and dropped into combat. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an alpha alien down with him. He awakens back at the beginning of the same day and is forced to fight and die again… and again – as physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop.

It doesn’t happen very often that I’m in the mood the watch either a Tom Cruise film in specific or a blockbuster film in general. The premise for Edge Of Tomorrow though intrigued me nonetheless (somebody explained it to me once as being Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers meets World War III) so I decided to give it a go anyway, and I have to say I’m not disappointed.

This movie, as directed by Doug Liman and as based on the 2004 Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, is about Major William Cage (Cruise), a public affairs officer with no combat experience, who is ordered to cover the next day’s assault on the beach of France, to combat extraterrestrial Mimics that have taken over Europe. Cage doesn’t want to go, but is arrested and forced to do so anyway. Next thing he knows he wakes up on London Heathrow Airport, getting ready to join J Squad and to fight these crazy aliens. Cage is not a very good soldier though, and dies covered in Mimic blood. Cage then wakes up to live the same day again, starting on the same airport, and has to do the whole thing over again, until he finally manages to save the world.

Since this movie is directed by Doug Liman of Jason Bourne fame (who (executive) produced most of them and directed the first one), we are presented with the kind of let-as-much-happen-as-possible-so-the-audience-doesn’t-care-what’s-happening-because-it-looks-CoOl-action. It makes one wonder what a movie like this would be like if it was directed by someone among the lines of Steven Soderbergh. Fair enough, it goes with the video game aesthetics of this film, which are indeed very cool to see. Basically, Cage is quickloading everytime he dies, with the save point being right before battle.

Pacing is great, and though it doesn’t always make sense (why would Cage go to the same place over and over again if will knows that something bad will happen there) - alas, that’s the state of blockbuster movies - Edge Of Tomorrow entertained me throughout. It’s dumb fun, and there’s not much with that every now and again.
