Yesterday the annual meeting for the finest drawing artists in Paris opened to their doors: @drawingnowartfair has actually a very interesting selection this year with a lot of beautiful discoveries like the wonderfully talented @irenegonzalez who works on supernatural portraits. I also absolutely loved the three dimensional work of French artist @anaislelievreanais who's work seems to draw us into a void. There were, of course, absolute darlings like the great @barthelemy_toguo at @galerielelongparis or @juergenklauke at @galerie_suzanne_tarasieve. A very special mention to @guillaumedege with a very delicate work beautifully curated at @galeriesemiose and @pabloarrazolaart with his delicate and poignant drawings about childhood. FR - ESTHETIQUE DU CHAOS

Gabriel Folli pousse l'hybridation des procédés et des images au point de produire les dessins les plus composites qui soient.

Sa série Amo Bishop Roden (2022), dont le titre est celui d'une chanson de Boards of Canada écoutée en boucle au cours de son élaboration, comprend six dessins qui agrègent photocopies de photographies, Polaroids, un ancien dessin au fusain collés sur des pages d'un vieux carnet et complétés d'interventions au graphite, crayon de couleur, marqueur, encre de chine. Parmi ces dernières, certaines interprètent des images trouvées comme dans ce dessin qui associe une image de ruine de la guerre d'Espagne à des portraits d'enfants espagnols issus de photographies de la même période et dessinés au revers de la page.

Cette "esthétique du chaos", selon les termes de l'artiste, s'appuie sur le rebut et le remploi mais aussi sur un archivage visuel tous azimuts. Multipliant les passages entre le passé et le présent, mise en abîme par les Polaroids de vues depuis l'atelier ou du travail en cours, elle sert l'enquête de l'artiste sur les violences de nos sociétés.

​EN - AESTHETIC OF CHAOS

​Gabriel Folli pushes the hybridisation of processes and images to the point of producing the most composite drawings possible.

His series Amo Bishop Roden (2022) , whose title is that of a Boards of Canada song which he listened to on a loop as he was making it, includes six drawings which combines photocopies of photographs, Polaroids, an old charcoal drawing pasted on pages of an old notebook and completed by interventions in graphite, crayon, marker and Indian ink. Some of these interpret found images, as in a drawing which associates an image of the ruins of the Spanish war with portraits of Spanish children taken from photographs from the same period and drawn on the back of the page.

This "aesthetic of chaos", to use the artist’s words, is based on wasted and re-use, but also on a full-scale process of visual archiving.

Multiplying the journeys between the past and the present, with a mise en abyme created by the Polaroids of views from the studio of the work in progress, this contributes to the artist’s investigation into the violence of our societies.
