I don't know if it's ever acknowledged just how gross it is that Karrin's ex, Richard Boughton pursued her sister (19 at the time they started) Lisa in Blood Rites. They seemed to be moving fast in their relationship with them already engaged after one year or less. And yes, I think Dick is the one who pushed the engagement.

There are already clear issues dating and marrying the sister of your ex-wife, but Harry also notes how much Lisa looks like Karrin which adds another uncomfortable layer to it. According to Mama Murphy who herself admits she doesn't entirely approve:

“He is,” Mama Murphy said. “Lisa went down for Mardi Gras. Apparently he had to arrest her.”

Basically, when they reunited he was already in a position of power over her as the arresting officer. He likely got her off, scoring points with her.

It's a guy in his mid-30s pursuing a teenager, which is a huge gap in experience and maturity between the two people, especially since Lisa didn't come off as especially mature for her age. He's already been married and has a job while Lisa as far as we know is unemployed and still hasn't finished college assuming she went. She had graduated high school likely the year before by that point.

I think that's a plus in his book. Take into account Karrin mentioning that he tried to pressure her into quitting her job to be a housewife, and we see with Lisa being younger, more inexperienced and vulnerable, she was easier to convince on that front. He wants to be the one who wears the proverbial pants in the relationship.

That's not even taking into account that assuming Karrin and Dick divorced the year before Stormfront at the latest, do the math and that would mean up to their reunion, the last time he would have seen Lisa she would still have been in middle school. By then he had known her for years as her brother-in-law, but given the age gap, he would have felt more like an uncle figure. Take into account she largely grew up without a father figure.

Or basically, a middle-aged man looked at someone who's barely an adult whom he watched grow up, giving him an already existing level of trust she had in him, and pursued her. He saw her as Karrin 2.0.

I think that's part of how Harry stands out compared to Karrin's exes. He had every opportunity to do so with Molly, a teen he arrested as Warden and had a preexisting relationship with as an uncle figure that started when she was in middle school, but he always refused to cross that line to the point that when Other Harry suggests it, he is clearly uncomfortable with the idea and refuses.

Harry is someone who will never trade Karrin for a younger model.

People keep asking me about my opinion on Murphy from the Dresden Files, so let me sum it up with a compilation of her iconic dialogue and descriptions of about 7 books:

It genuinely sticks with me in Battle Ground, that Harry “Refused a Red Court Ceasefire Because He Learned They Exploited Kids” Dresden, when he realises the Paranet rumours that Winter Fae are yanking kids is true and Molly is complicit in it? Molly who is cackling in absolute manic delight as she commands those kids into the shitshow that was the Chicago battleground?

He directly implies those abductions may not be a bad thing after all. That’s all he says, to the effect of huh those rumours were right and that works out well for us here.

Harry who has also heard from Fix, Meryl, Lilly, Ace what the Winter Court does to changelings they lay claim too through heritage (it taking the Summer Knight’s direct protection to free them).

Like?? Maybe it could be partly excused during the battle, he’s dipping very deep into the Knight mantle and doesn’t react to several things as he should there. Enough so I do think that’s a deliberate element of the mantle influencing Harry’s character.

But if this doesn’t get addressed at all henceforth, at least some sort of objection to Molly even or bringing it up at least on does she use kids like that more often?? Then that is a very frightening moral decay in him to not only genuinely not care but say it may not be a bad thing.

If it has already been I can’t remember it.

And I DESPERATELY need art of Murphy and Dresden reuniting at the end of the book. Both with their injuries and pointing at each other like the Spider-Man meme going. “What the fuck happened to you”

One thing I'd note about Karrin is that she's one of the toughest people Harry knows, and he'd say as much given he learned the hard way of crossing her when she chipped one of his teeth. Yet, she is a not wizard or warlock with spell slots like Harry, she cannot transform into a wolf or any animal like the Alphas, does not have a demon to give her enhanced physical abilities like Thomas or Susan or a superpowered Mantle like Molly's, nor does she even so much as have a magic sword like Michael, Butters and Sanya (I know about Fidelacchius but she was never a Knight).

She is a vanilla mortal with no magic whatsoever and combined with her petite appearance (and being a women as she learned in the CPD), most supernatural creatures and people would overlook her. But she manages to hold her own against magically powerful creatures from ghouls and vampires to giants and fae. Her skills are more practical in being a black belt martial artist who broke an einharjar's fingers in a spar, and a markswoman who managed to hit a moving target from a hundred yards away on motorcycle. She also has a good head on her shoulders in assessing situations and coming up with plans with as shown in "Aftermath" with the way she handled the Fomor. She demonstrates a mental toughness and strong will in being able to throw off mental attacks from whampires, Fomor and even the Red King and Lords of Outer Night despite having no training in psychic defense.

She is the only mortal besides Harry in the series to kill a faerie queen, and despite having a broken leg in a cast, she managed to fell a Jotun in a single blow (from a bazooka) that gave Winter Knight Harry a run for his money.

She also has demonstrated leadership abilities with The Society of Friends being her idea, and was key in Chicago's defense against the Fomor. She managed to hold the city together while Harry was gone.

If anything, she demonstrates deep down why ones in the supernatural community actually fear mortals in spite of looking down on them. Harry always respected her since the beginning for her strength, courage, integrity and intelligence, with her being the first person he would go to if he needed help.

If she does come back as a Valkyrie, Vadderung should double his fees.

The Dresden Files

I went a little crazy with this one!

It's only because my mutuals brought this to my attention that I ever found out about the Dresden Files comic, but now they have and now I have the time I felt it was suitable to rant on it, specifically the design choices made in this panel.

Gang, I love graphic novels and comic books, they're one of my favorite storytelling mediums, which is why I feel strongly about it. And how I feel about this. Is that it's Disappointing with a big fat D.

NUMBER ONE. Thomas. They de-twinkified my slender son. Why is he uber-ripped?? I know White Court vampires are supernaturally strong, but does that mean they're all built like linebackers??? When I picture Thomas I think slender and muscular like a panther is, not golf ball sized biceps throbbing out of his meat casings holy shit.

Next we need to talk about Murphy. I know I know I KNOW that superhero comic artists draw women like this a lot but it feels particularly frustrating when it's Murphy, all this leading up to my question of : why is she arching? Why is her ass sticking out when she's readying her weapon? This is the only real complaint I have on Murph's appearance in this panel, at the very least, but book Murphy would never be caught in that position.

Number three. Harry. My sweet sweet man. Maybe it's just this angle, but his face looks like that of a gym bro. A roblox character. Someone who's been mogging for decades. I don't even have any specific criticism to give for him in panel except that it just doesn't feel like him??? The face is too chiseled and I feel like it's just a watered down version of every other superhero comic main character face.

Maybe I'm just a whiner though, the artist did a great job on backgrounds and don't get me wrong I can respect someone in the art profession. But I'm a picky fannnnn what can I sayyyyyy
