The Indian Real Estate Sector: Opportunities and Challenges in a Transformational Era
The Indian real estate sector is undergoing significant transformation driven by urbanization, a growing middle class, and economic progress in Tier II cities. This evolution presents developers with both opportunities and challenges. The upcoming 2024 Union Budget is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the industry's future, as developers eagerly anticipate government measures to fuel growth.
Budget Expectations
The real estate sector's growth heavily depends on government policies and allocations. Developers and investors are optimistic about key reforms in the upcoming budget:
GST Concessions: Reducing input taxes can lessen developers' tax burdens, potentially lowering property prices and attracting more buyers.
Rationalized Taxation: New provisions for tax and interest rate deductions can make projects more viable amid rising construction costs.
Demand Trends and Price Expectations
The sector continues to see robust demand, particularly in Tier I and Tier II cities. Developers predict sustained growth in property demand, with a potential increase in prices. Reports indicate a 10% price hike in early 2024, following a 9% rise in 2023.
Tier II Cities as Growth Drivers
Tier II cities are increasingly becoming attractive destinations for residential and commercial development. Factors driving this growth include:
Infrastructure Advancements: Improved connectivity, healthcare, and education facilities enhance the appeal of these cities.
Affordability: With lower living costs than Tier I cities, they attract middle-class families and young professionals.
Economic Growth: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and industries are thriving in Tier II cities, creating job opportunities and boosting local economies.
Rising Interest from NRIs
The growing interest of non-resident Indians (NRIs) is reshaping the real estate market. Factors such as streamlined property registration processes, economic stability in India, and emotional ties to the country are encouraging NRIs to invest in residential and commercial properties.
Sustainability as a Priority
Sustainability has emerged as a critical focus area for real estate. Eco-friendly projects are gaining popularity due to their lifestyle and health benefits, as well as lower operational costs. Developers and the government are increasingly promoting green building practices to align with global sustainability goals.
Coping with Rising Costs
Rising construction costs have pressured developers to adopt alternative strategies:
Branded Residences: Partnering with hospitality brands to offer premium living experiences.
Plot Selling: Providing land for buyers to build their homes, reducing upfront construction costs and offering flexibility.
Tech-Driven Marketing Strategies
Developers are leveraging advanced technologies to enhance buyer experiences and streamline processes:
Building Information Modeling (BIM): A 3D modeling tool for better project planning and cost management.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): Enabling virtual property tours for remote buyers.
PropTech Platforms: Facilitating online real estate transactions with transparency and convenience.
Conclusion
The Indian real estate development sector stands at a critical juncture. While developers face challenges like rising costs and market uncertainties, the growing demand in Tier II cities and increasing interest from NRIs provide significant opportunities. By adopting innovative strategies and embracing technology, the industry can navigate complexities and cater to a diverse range of buyers. Collaboration between the government and developers will be essential in driving sustainable growth and ensuring the sector's long-term success.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur or investor, Rwanda offers exciting opportunities in tourism and beyond. Here’s why now is the perfect time to tap into Rwanda’s growth story.
1. Rapid Economic Growth Drives Tourism Opportunities
Rwanda’s economy has been expanding at an average of 8.2% in recent years, with further growth expected. Tourism is a key driver, contributing significantly to GDP. Post-pandemic recovery efforts, including investments in hospitality and adventure tourism, are putting Rwanda back on the travel map. Emerging sectors like agro-tourism and community-based tourism are also gaining traction, offering fresh investment avenues
2. Political Stability Ensures a Safe Travel Environment
Peace and political stability are essential for tourism, and Rwanda excels in both. Since 1994, the nation has undergone a remarkable transformation. With peaceful elections and robust governance, the country offers a secure environment for visitors and businesses alike. A stable political climate attracts tourists and gives investors the confidence to develop long-term tourism projects.
3. Strategic Location in East Africa
Rwanda is located in the heart of East Africa, making it an ideal travel hub. Its proximity to major tourist destinations such as Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania offers opportunities for cross-border tourism packages. 4. Business-Friendly Environment for Tourism Investors
Rwanda ranks highly for ease of doing business, making it a prime location for tourism investors. Setting up a business is straightforward, with tourism-related businesses benefiting from incentives like tax holidays and duty-free import of equipment. The government’s proactive approach ensures that tourism startups can hit the ground running without bureaucratic delays.
5. A Skilled Workforce with Tourism Expertise
Tourism in Rwanda benefits from a young and educated workforce trained in hospitality management and eco-tourism. Programs emphasizing vocational training and language skills ensure that visitors experience world-class service. This workforce not only enriches the tourism experience but also reduces operating costs for businesses.
6. Technological Advancements Boost Smart Tourism

Visitors can explore national parks with tech-enabled guides and book travel services seamlessly through online platforms. These advancements make it easier for tourists to plan their trips and for businesses to manage operations efficiently.
7. Tourism Potential Beyond Wildlife Safaris
When people think of Rwanda tourism, they often think of mountain gorillas. But the country offers so much more—think lake adventures at Lake Kivu, cultural tours, and birdwatching in Nyungwe Forest. Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable tourism is evident in its eco-lodges and community tourism initiatives, ensuring travelers leave a positive impact.
8. Green Economy Initiatives Align with Eco-Tourism
Sustainability is at the heart of Rwanda’s tourism strategy. The government has implemented green initiatives like banning single-use plastics and promoting renewable energy. Eco-tourism investments are encouraged, with several lodges and safari operators committed to conservation and community engagement. These initiatives align with the global trend towards responsible travel.
9. Infrastructure Development Supports Tourism Growth

Your Guide to Canadian Immigration Changes in 2024
What to Expect for Canadian Immigration in 2024?
Canada has one of the lowest birth rates in the world along with one of the oldest populations worldwide. Fiscal and economic pressures result from this. Canada’s natural population growth rate is modest, which translates into low rates of labor force expansion and economic growth. Canada finds it challenging to raise the taxes required to fund social expenditure on services like health care, education, and other vital sectors that contribute to the high standard of living in the nation. This is because the country is experiencing low economic growth.
Because of this, Canada has been boosting immigration since the late 1980s to accelerate economic, labor force, and population growth. Most of Canada’s population increase, labor force expansion, and economic growth in recent years have been largely attributed to immigration. Just think about it like by 2030, 9 million baby boomers in Canada will be old enough to retire at age 65. This implies that while Canada’s social spending on health care is expected to increase, the country will have fewer workers. For more than 30 years, Canada has taken the initiative to address this issue by progressively increasing its immigration targets.
Canada inviting in 2024-2026:-
Canada will likely keep raising immigration levels gradually for the foreseeable future, given its immigration trends and demographic realities. Immigration will continue to be essential to the nation’s fiscal stability and robust economy. Between 2024 and 2026, Canada expects to receive approximately 1.5 million new immigrants, a major increase over previous years.
There was great discussion over the lack of an increase between 2025 and 2026 when Canada Immigration Minister Marc Miller recently unveiled his Immigration Levels Plan. Nonetheless, the rate of immigration to Canada is going to be high, with 500,000 newcomers anticipated in each of those two years. It anticipates its third consecutive record year for new permanent residency visas in 2023, with 465,000 new arrivals, according to the Immigration Levels Plan, which was unveiled in the fall.
Although official figures are not yet available, the nation is expected to surpass those figures in terms of actual new arrivals. Of the 485,000 newcomers this year, more than 281,000, or 58%, are economic immigrants. This makes it quite evident what Canada’s immigration priorities are.

Examination of the Projections for 2024:-
Under the economic class, about 281,135 immigrants will be welcomed to Canada, making up 58% of the yearly objective. Analyzing this number further, we see that the Express Entry goal for 2024 is 110,700 admissions of permanent residents. As a result, Express Entry is set to take back its place as Canada’s main route for admitting applicants of the economic class.
Eleven thousand immigrants, or twenty-four percent of all admissions, are expected to be part of the family class. In particular, 82,000 admissions are targeted for spouse, partner, and child sponsorship in 2024, compared to 32,000 admissions for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The goal for humanitarian admissions is set at 89,865 immigrants, or around 19% of total admissions. This includes those who are admitted for humanitarian, compassionate, or other reasons, as well as refugees and protected persons.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
The next few days went as before, Solstice sitting in her dark, hot room, only coming out when she was sure no one was home to get what food was around the house. Luckily for her Sweet Pea hardly spent any time in the house other than to sleep and FP was never there, probably trying to stay away from his problematic daughter.
Solstices head was spinning, she didn't know if was dehydration or the fact she had not one but two siblings that she had never met. Solstice had always wanted siblings and at the academy, she somewhat found that. The first day she started at the academy Solstice was appointed to the orphanage sector even after constantly repeating that she "wasn't, in fact, an orphan" and her parents "would be coming for her any day now". Her parents never came and after a while, she stopped crying herself to sleep. Solstice soon realised that if her family wasn't going to come and save her then she was going to create a family with the only three girls that were in the same situation as her. Of course, Solstice knew other children at the academy that were there to get an education but only four; herself, Prudence, Agatha and Dorcas, lived there all year round.
This caused them to become inseparable and soon enough their little group caught the name 'The Weird Sisters", a name Solstice despised with a passion. These girls looked out for Solstice and eventually they became a force to be reckoned with. Together they caused mischief and often got in trouble for causing general havoc and widespread destruction. But when together no punishment truly felt like discipline and instead, they were some of Solstices fondest memories. Such as when they were caught mixing herbs and such into different glasses and jars, they were forced to clean the entirety of the girl's dorms, and with one quick glamour spell, they were done.
These actions lead to the weird sisters to become some of the most powerful witches at the academy, often being submitted into the advanced classes years ahead of them. But what else can you expect if they live at the school while the rest of their classmates went home off term spending time with their families, being loved and cherished. After a couple of long years like this Solstice finally came to terms with this life and stopped fighting her old ideals. She soon forgot about her life in Riverdale and the torture her parents allowed to endure in the Sisters of Quite Mercy.
When she ran away from the academy there was nothing left for her there. Her sisters were gone, her real family was gone and solstice was truly heartbroken. She didn't have real time to grieve because she was terrified that whatever hurt her loved ones like that may still be looking for her. It was a complete coincidence that she stumbled into Riverdale after all of these years. Her bus broke down shortly after taking off, her intended destination being anywhere as far away from Greendale as she could possibly get. Solstice surprised herself when her feet began to walk the long trek from the main road all the way through the northside right down to the southside and to her childhood home. She tried her hardest to not get her hopes up. Of course, her old family wouldn't still be they because if they were, they just didn't want her instead of not being able to find her. She was wrong.
Solstice was physically shaken out of her deep dark thoughts when an enormous round of rattling knocks came from the weak wood of the bedroom door. Solstice didn't get out of her bed but instead just sat up against the black metal headboard. After a few more seconds of silence and door creaked open to reveal an already dressed and ready-to-go Sweet Pea who instantly rolled his eyes when he saw her lack of effort to pretend to be ready.
"We had to leave like 10 minutes ago" he muttered looking, less than impressed look grazing over his flawless features. "Just hurry up so we can leave"
For a moment Solstice was baffled with what he could be going on about when she remembered that it was her first day of southside high today. Absolutely fucking perfect. She really could not be bothered but when she turned her head to complain to the tall boy, he was already gone with the door shut behind him. Solstice sighed dramatically loud and peeled herself from her duvet and stretched upwards when she leapt from the bed. Solstice walked over to the vanity that was door the inspect the damage she had done to herself after being a hermit for almost a week.
To put it plainly it was horrific, her normally blonde, wavy shoulder-length hair was almost a dark brunette due to the amount of sweat and grease that had layered it. Even worse than that was the dark circles that clung to her eyes for dear life. She still had a small amount of makeup that was left over from the night she arrived. Solstice turned to the alarm clock that was behind her on the bedside table and groaned when she saw that she only had 15 minutes until she assumed that school started. A simple glamour probably wouldn't be able to hide the truly impressive state she was in at the moment, however, there was only thing that would help. She turned to find her bag that was laying at the foot of the bed a pulled her grimoire which was bound in black cloth instead of the traditional leather. Skimming through the various pages she came to the one she was looking for. Appearance revival. She looked briefly over the instructions and grabbed and lit the large pillar candle the was also in her duffle bag. After reciting the added incantation, she turned back to the mirror and smiled at the result.
Her skin was her usual perfect porcelain complexion with a few blonde freckles scattered over the whole of her face. Her blue eyes gleamed as if they had never shed a single tear and her hair was back its old healthy ways, blonde waves wreaking havoc around her head. Now all she had to do was get dressed into her black dress, put her doc martin boots and she was done. After doing this Solstice blew out the candle and placed it in the wardrobe along with her book and picked up her shoulder bag and rushed down the stairs with 9 minutes to spare. As Solstice descended, she saw sweet pea standing next to the front door, looking impatiently down at his wrist.
He huffed still looking down, "Solstice, if you don't hurry up, I swear I'm gonna- "
"You're gonna do what Sweet Pea? I'm truly terrified" Solstice quipped tilting her head to the side and raising her eyebrows.
Sweet Pea sharply looked up and was slightly startled that she was stood in front of him. He was even more confused by the fact that she was completely ready to go even after he had just seen her sitting in bed looking like actual death. There was no way that this could have been possible and sweet peas open jaw only made Solstices smirk wider.
"Cat got your tongue? And here I was thinking we were going to be late..." She stated as she settled the straps of her bag back onto her shoulder when they became a little loose.
Sweets pea closed his mouth and angrily opened the front door and walked out, "try not to melt" he cast the comment over his shoulder obviously irritated with her.
Solstice closed the door behind her, "No promises".
She followed a few steps behind sweet pea as his long legs lead them down the streets of the southside until they reached a rusty baby blue pick up truck and he swung his bag into the bed of it and turned to open the door. He jumped into the driver side and started it after it refused to the first couple of times. Solstice waited patiently for him to unlock the passenger side door. Solstice was starting to grow impatient and looked and the boy sat behind the wheel, Sweet Pea was smiling wickedly and indicated to her with his hand motions that he had indeed unlocked it. Sol knew he hadn't, call it witchy intuition if you will. But choosing to humour him she placed her hand onto the handle and pulled, the door still not budging. She could see that the door was still locked from the inside because the little pull/push lever was still pushed down. Solstice could so easily open the door if she willed it but that would risk Sweet Pea finding out what she was. She could hardly care less about Sweet Pea himself but she couldn't be held responsible for another witch trails, that guilt would cause some serious wrinkles. So instead she gave the boy a devilish glare and turned her back to him and looked down the street to see a gaggle of youths making they way in her direction. When she looked back to look at Sweet Pea, he was already looking at the same group through the small window behind his head. He let out an annoyed sigh as he leaned over the passenger seat and popped the door open for Solstice and almost dragged her in and slammed the door shut the door behind her.
As the group passed without incident Sweet pea let out a breath of relief, as if he was expecting them to notice him.
"Not friends of yours I'm taking it, "Solstice said still looking at the small silhouettes of the teens in the distance.
Sweet pea didn't say anything as he finally started the truck and began to drive the short distance to the school. There wasn't much in the way of scenery as it mainly consisted of a rundown concrete wasteland with an occasional tree or shrub, but even then, they were either destroyed or had some sort of deformity. Greendale was nothing like this. It was full of lush mint fields and upper-class houses with an immense forest that backed up on to the academy's property. Solstice loved those woods more than anything, especially straight after it had rained. They was nothing quite like it in this world.
Shorty after Sweet Pea pulled up into a free parking space and the truck and came to a stop. The space he had chosen was smack bang in the middle of at least 30 motorbikes. Weird choice, solstice thought. When they jumped out of the car she turned to see that space was marked by dark green spray paint in the shape of the box. That's odd. Why would there be a makeshift parking space right in the middle of the motorbike area? Solstice twisted her head to the right and saw a group of teenagers all wearing leather jackets with that same serpent as what her dad and Sweet Pea had on their back. It was also the same as the tattoo and Sweet Pea had on his neck.
Solstice turned back around to see Sweet Pea stretching over the bed of his truck and grab his worn-down black backpack and threw it into the front of the truck, under the bench seat and out of view.
Solstice furrowed her eyebrows in confusion." Won't you need that?" she asked fiddling with the lace fringing of her dress, not really out of nervousness but more out of habit and that moment in time.
Sweet Pea looked over at her and shook his head, "you're not gonna need a bag, trust me." He said and walked the rest of the way to her. "and you're not really dressed either" What the actual fuck?
"What are you ta- "She started when he began to shrug off his many layers until he handed her his red, blue and black checker flannel.
"What do you what me to do with this?" she asked sort of handing back it back to him. Still very baffled.
"You're dressed to..." he seemed to think for a moment trying to think of the best word as he started putting back his denim vest and leather jacket back on. "Fancy." He cringed slightly. "Only northsiders dress like you and if they-" he pointed to the school, "-think you're from the northside you're better than dead, so would you please just put it on" he exhaled.
Solstice rolled her eyes and forcibly shoved her bag into Sweet Pea's arms so that it wouldn't have to touch the muddy gravel below her and stretched the loose material over her body. Looking into the window of the truck Solstice saw that her lace collar or fringing didn't go with her whole ensemble. She grabbed and torn the lace which came off quite easily as it was only held down with buttons. Without the lace, Solstice looked a lot more casual. She sighed turning her nose up at it. Now she just looked ridiculous, she thought.
She turned back to Sweet Pea who took his time looking at her, he handed her her bag. "I suppose that will do," he said and began to walk towards the school entrance where there were a few students still filtering in. Again, walking behind Sweet Pea they entered the school and the air was nearly knocked out of her. It took her a moment to realise that someone was touching her, someone had thrown their long, heavy arm straight over her shoulders, she snapped her head, hoping, praying that it would be SP because at least he was a familiar face. It wasn't, instead, it was another boy, maybe an inch taller than Solstice. He was grinning down at her with an evil smirk. With was also wearing a leather jacket but this one was studded with various pieces of metal.
Panic started to bubble up in her throat and could hear the fizzing in her ears her eyes darted around until she saw that Sweet Pea was being held up against a wall by at least 4 guys who were all barely just able to keep him put. He was thrashing about uncontrollably, rage filling his entire being.
"You're new here, aren't you?" the boy who had his arm over her shoulder, a smile filling his features. Solstice was stunned. He was talking to her like they're not beating to the person she came in with to a bloody pulp.
She ignored him, swiftly pushing him off of her and began to approach SP until he made eye contact with her and shook his head. She didn't know what she was supposed to do, she had never dealt with something like this. Gang warfare was something the Academy didn't usually deal with.
Suddenly she felt a harsh grip on the upper portion of her arm and was spun around to face the same boy as before. "I believe I asked you a question, Babe," he said and grabbed her chin and forced her to look up at him. Solstice didn't realize how angry she was becoming. Who in holy hell did he think he was?
"Yes, I suppose you did, didn't you" she snarled and tried to rip her face out of his grasp but his grip only became stronger. She knew what she had to do. She was taught what to do in her self-defence classes.
Solstice closed her eyes and tried to find any part of her that was calm, it would only work if she concentrated. She found it in the deep regions of her stomach, somewhere where there weren't any anxious butterflies, and in the space, she found her strength. She looked up him with pitch black eyes, almost like her iris's had swallowed the rest of her eyes. She let the witch within her take over and she began muttering words that she had never even heard before.
"Nos relinquere solus" she whispered into his ear and almost instantly he let go of her and started barking orders to the others who were still holding Sweep Pea up while others took turns punching. They stopped almost as quickly as he did and he swiftly started to speed walk down the now quiet halls of the school. Turning his head over his shoulder with a look of terror in his wide eyes.
Solstice waited for a few seconds before turning and walking over to Sweet Pea who was slightly hunched over, leaning against the wall. He was breathing slowly, his arms wrapped around his torso. He looked like he was trying to hype himself up to be fine. Painfully slowly he straightens his back until he was stood upright. He was obvious that he was hurt but he tried his best to hide it. Solstice walked the short distance to him and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Shit, are you alright?" She asked as he winced in pain, shrugging off her hand and began walking down the long hallway.
"Yes, I'm great" he muttered as he grabbed her hand and lead her towards the desk with an old receptionist, a tired look on her face. When she looked up to see Sweet Pea stood there with a black and bloody face, she rolled her eyes, not one ounce of concern crossed over her.
"Another detention Sweet Pea? It's only ten past nine on a Monday morning, that has to be a new record." She noted as she collected the documents, she thought she would need sweet pea to sign for the day he was able to do the detention.
"um no Gladis, not today," he said flashing a smile to the older woman, "Actually it's her first day, Solstice Jones..." he said and slightly pushed Solstice to the desk. Solstice lightly coughed and tried to smile sincerely, which she found incredibly difficult because she didn't want to be there and she was just harassed in the hallway when Sweet Pea was literally being used as a human punching bag.
Gladis rolled her eyes and turned to a computer that was just out of view from the teens and started to slowly types on the thick keyboard which no longer had some of the lettered stickers and had yellowed with age. Solstice was certain that that keyboard was defiantly older that she was and maybe even older than FP. Solstice guessed that Gladis may be a bit of a negative mood as all of the other students had already made it to their classroom and if they weren't late, she would be having her free time around about now.
Gladis looked up and raked her eyes over Solstices form for a little longer than what was considered normal, "Jones, you said?" she questioned, craning her neck towards sweet pea and completely ignoring the look Solstice gave her. Sweet Pea nodded.
Gladis looked back to the computer a cruel smile filling her features, "I thought the serpent king only had two children, an older boy and a young girl, Jughead and Jelly Bean was it?"
Even their fucking names matched.
Bitch. Solstice smiled brightly, trying not to let it get to her. "Yup the very same. I'm the oldest, nice to meet you" she heard from the side of her sweet pea snorting and her fake demeanour.
Gladis ignored her and walked over to the printer. Solstice turned to face Sweet Pea and rolled her eyes at his smirk. Gladis walked back and placed a couple of sheets of black and white paper which had her class schedule on it. Before solstice could even have a look, Sweet Pea whipped it out of her hands and began inspecting it. He had a neutral look on his face until he frowned. He turned back to the receptionist.
"thanks" he muttered and grabbed Solstices hand again and started to pull her down the dark hall. To be honest she was starting to get incredibly frustrated with being lead places with no explanation. Solstice slid her hand out of SP's and slowed down to a halt.
"Do you mind telling me where we are going"
Sweet pea stopped a few feet ahead of her, his patience growing thin. "Where would we be going?" he spat with more venom than he had intended but he really wasn't in the mood to be dealing this. At that moment in time, he hurt all over. He desperately wanted to sit down and with every question, this girl was asking she was preventing him from doing so. "We are in a school, I'm taking you to your classroom so I don't have to babysit you anymore"
Babysit? What did this asshole mean by that?
"Fuck you," she said with the same amount of harshness. "if I'm really that much of a bother I suggest you make yourself scarce then" And with that solstice barged past him connecting with his shoulder. Sweet Pea didn't follow her but she didn't want him to. To be honest he was starting to get on her nerves anyway. She continued to walk around the school until she found that one of the classrooms of her left was completely empty, she threw herself into it and slammed the door behind her.
She didn't care if another person saw her as a burden, she should be used to it by now, right? Hot tears threatened to escape her if she didn't pull her shit together. She had no right to be upset because she barely knew Sweet Pea. Still, that fucking hurts.
Solstice sat at one of the desks and pulled her phone from out of her bag. She scrolled through her contacts until she found what she was looking for. The group chat that belonged to her and her sisters. Still nothing, but that's what she was expecting. She knew it would sting when she saw that there were no new messages asking her when she thought she would arrive home, or how her trip was going. She just wished everything could go back to the old ways, she just wanted to go home.
"fuck" she cried out loudly even though she tried to muffle it with her hand. Waves of emotion washed over her.
"Princessa, are you okay?" she suddenly heard a voice say from the corner of the room, she snapped her head in that direction as see a bulky, very good-looking tanned boy stood next to a girl with impeccable fashion sense and bright pink highlight in her caramel hair.
"of course, she's not, idiot," the girl said as she walked over to Solstice and sat down next to her. "you're Solstice, right?" she asked and tilted her head to the side.
Solstice wiped her tears from her cheeks after her moment of weakness and nodded, "um yeah, sure" she said. "how did you know that?"
"Sweet Pea sent us to do damage control," the boy said who was now leaning against the desk in front of the girls,
"Fangs shut the fuck up, he did not!" the girl snapped at him, causing Solstice to smile lightly, they reminded her of her sisters.
Fangs tilted his head to the side," Nah, Toni, I'm pretty sure he did because when we heard the shouting and then sweets walked into the room looking very angry you said and I quote "Waddup asshole" and he just glared and you, but it wasn't his usual 'shut up Toni' glare it was more of 'I'm not in the fucking mood' glare and then you asked if it was something to do with the new serpent girl he was supposed to be watching, and he kinda looked like he wanted to throttle you and then he told you to Solstice walked in this direction and here we are so-"
"Fangs, babe?" Toni smiled up at him, "shut up!" she stated and a rose tint filled his cheeks. Solstice laughed at their interaction and placed her phone face down onto the desk. "he means well I swear" Toni said side eyeing fangs, "Sweet Pea, on the other hand, is a bit... prickly" she pulled a face at her chose of words but to be honest that was the perfect way to describe him.
"Yeh, no it's fine I was upset about something else." Solstice said her hands fiddling with the sleeves of the flannel. Toni and fangs noticed this and looked at each other.
"So, I hope u don't find me rude but I didn't know that FP had another kid, and you're the oldest right," Toni asked pushing her long hair over her shoulder.
"I mean I guess so, I haven't met the others, Jughead and jellybean, right?" Solstice asked already kinda knowing the answer.
"You haven't met your brother and sister, dude that's messed up "fangs butted in earning a glare from Toni
"Yeh I've not lived with dad since I was six "Solstice said.
"No shit, so how old are you then?" Toni asked
"Just turned 17"
Just as she spoke a bell rang through the room causing Fangs and Toni to jump to their feet and began to walk to the door. When the noticed that Solstice didn't move, they turned to look at her.
"Aren't you coming?" Fangs asked looking a little offended.
Solstice thought she was on an alien planet where to didn't know the language anyone was speaking or knew any of their customs.
"um where? "she asked grabbing her bag and phone. Toni linked arms with her and they walked out of the classroom.
"Lunch," she said smiling.

As a result, it is suggested that if women candidates are not available for the Driver job, males of the same caste replace the female Driver category openings rather than dragging forward these backlog postings for years at a time. The board gave its consent, and the board resolutions were conveyed to the TR&B Department to let them know.

9 tips for getting a job after graduating with a BBA
Tumblr media
Bachelor of Business Administration, or BBA, is a widely popular graduating programme among today's youth. It teaches business management, organisation, strategy, and how to start a new company. The most popular degree courses are BBA programmes in UAE. This is entirely due to the three-year professional undergraduate course's broad scope and high availability. This programme requires a minimum of 55 percent aggregate grades from a 10+2 education. A BBA graduate's beginning pay is substantial, which explains the great demand for an attractive environment of BBA degree programmes given by leading academic institutions.
It is critical for BBA degree holders to have the necessary preparation and abilities in order to be recruited after completing the programme.
The following are the top 9 tips for getting a job after graduating with a BBA:
Never stop learning
There are instances when a large number of students graduate with a degree in management but lack knowledge of business-related topics and news. This is due to their failure to keep current with latest breakthroughs in the sector. The first and most important piece of advice for BBA students is to subscribe to a business magazine or newspaper and read it on a regular basis. It is critical to broaden your knowledge in order to appreciate and gain an advantage over other candidates. You can also join an online debate club to learn more about themes pertaining to your career from other people.
Take advantage of online certification classes
Students can take other BBA-related courses in addition to the professional BBA programme to gain extra skills and knowledge. The ideal method to do so is to enrol in online short certification courses from the convenience of your own home. They assist you in both learning and developing a stronger portfolio. Introduction to Human Resource Management, Certificate in Business & Management Studies, Project Management Principles and Practices, and more online courses for BBA students are available on a variety of platforms. Common courses such as Management Information Systems (MIS) or MS Excel software training can also add value to your portfolio.
Brush up on abilities that aren't taught in school
Basic talents will never be surpassed by esoteric terminology. You must also brush up on your talents in order to demonstrate them. Great oratory or interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and managerial skills are all essential for BBA students. Employers hunt for effective communicators because poor communication may lose a company millions of dollars. Similarly, the Group Discussion sessions held during the employment process are intended to assess the same abilities. As a result, people who can hone these skills will have an advantage during the selection process. Practice speaking clearly, listening, managing your thoughts in your head, and projecting pertinent ideas with your peers. To enhance your leadership skills, participate in little projects and group activities.
Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses
If the key strategies are clear in a fresher's mind, he or she can land any employment. This method entails gaining a better understanding of oneself. Understanding your skills and shortcomings is the greatest way to be recruited. You can easily comprehend business if you understand your drivers and passions, which is critical for BBA degree holders. The many stages of the placement process provide you with a wealth of information about your skill sets and competences. A good manager is one who is clear about his vision and potential roadblocks in order to be more prepared. This comprehension can be strengthened by citing relevant examples from work or even little projects.
Make a LinkedIn account
When it comes to job hunting, making relationships pays rewards. LinkedIn is the most popular professional networking site, and it will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Employers will not check for you on Facebook or Instagram if you construct a LinkedIn profile as soon as feasible and maintain it up to date. You might include a review of your talents, educational background, accolades, accomplishments, job experience, and a statement of the type of career that interests you. There are well-known companies and celebrities with whom you can make contacts and catch an employer's attention.  HP, ICICI Bank , McKinsey & Compan, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Deloitte are the top BBA hiring firms.
Look for internship opportunities
It is never too early or too late to begin your internship search. Internships are an important element of learning and gaining experience in the workplace. You can find part-time or full-time internships for one to three months after completing a BBA course, or even during the three-year course. BBA students can gain a practical understanding of the in-depth process of business management while also improving their knowledge and abilities. Internships are available in finance, retail, banking, human resources, marketing, sales, information technology, and other areas of the BBA programme.
Your resume serves as your identity
According to a survey, recruiters only spend about six seconds on average evaluating a résumé. A relevant resume is the decisive element for employers when shortlisting individuals, making it quite important. Remember that including all of your personal details and omitting crucial information about the post are both incorrect. In-depth qualifications and experience credentials should be mentioned first, with the most recent first. Never intentionally mislead employers by claiming abilities that they aren't seeking for just to fill up space on your resume. Make an impression by presenting knowledge as peer relevance, and you'll stand out from the crowd.
Perfect application creates a great first impression.
Who hasn't heard the phrase "first impressions are lasting impressions"? It is critical for us to make the best first impression possible when applying for a job in order to deliver our best effort. This can be accomplished by proposing a compelling application. Many people do not put up any effort prior to being shortlisted; therefore, a candidate who makes an effort when applying for a job has an advantage over others. Before mailing your application, write a cover letter and proofread it. To go forward in the proper direction, put useful, error-free information in the right place.
Research about  the industry thoroughly
It is critical for BBA students to demonstrate managerial ability. As a result, it is extremely important for a job applicant to conduct research about the company for which they are applying. Aspects such as the company's history, organisational principles, mission, and vision, among others, should be investigated. To impress employers, you might also link your abilities with the company's research. It displays your willingness and desire to pursue professional goals as well as your capacity to handle duties. Examine the organization's requirements as well as the project's efficiency.

The US stock market selling was largely algo-driven as the market dropped through technically important levels, triggering more selling. Bloomberg says traders weren’t panicked while a Wall Street Journal headline blared the reverse, so you can decide which version of yesterday you like better.
Regardless, some automated services did better than others. Business Insider reports that two of the biggest roboadvisers, Uses of Betterment and Wealthfront, had their sites go down during the market swoon.
The bigger question is what if anything this means. The simplest version is the markets had gotten way too frothy (even sober types like Mohamed El-Erain had been pretty alarmed for months) and the nature of lots of algo in the market means that downturns are more likely to be violent than in the past.
But another way to read it is that this particular downdraft is a symptom of how much owners of securities think that what is good for workers is bad for them. This is a reversal of the old post-war economic model, in which policy-makers focused above all on rising wage rates as the driver of prosperity. That went out the window with the 1970s inflation. The Fed, starting with Volcker, has made curbing inflation a bigger target than fostering growth, and has become more and more eager to create more unemployment in order to curb wage growth, which they see as the driver of inflation. That is a pretty dated view of the economy, since in the 1970s, not only did labor have more bargaining power, but many companies had formal or informal policies to increase wages in response to inflation, which had the potential to create accelerating inflation. Not only does that practice no longer exist outside the executive suite, where pay consultants seem expert at creating excuses to increase CEO pay vastly faster than inflation or performance would warrant, but much of what looks like inflation occurs in selected sectors (health care, broadband prices, higher education) as a result of aggressive use of pricing power.
More specifically, the most common explanation for the market swoon is that jobs reports on Friday that showed what were interpreted as strong wage gains would lead the Fed to decide it was behind the curve and at least stick to its three planned rate increases this year, and potentially make them a bit sooner than expected. And these rate increases come with a backdrop of adequate to pretty good (by “new normal”) standards around the world, so no other major central bank is expected to be easing this year and therefore provide something of a buffer to the Fed’s tightening.
However, over at Bonddad, New Deal democrat parses the data and takes issue with the conventional reading of the Friday jobs report. His take is that most workers didn’t get much in the way of pay increases, that the gains were mainly in the supervisory classes. From his post:
I wanted to follow up on why I dissented Friday from the near-consensus take that workers finally got a nice raise, with many citing hikes in the minimum wage. As you may recall, the YoY% change in the average hourly earnings of all employees rose 2.9% as of January.
That was the story in, for example, Marketwatch:
Average hourly wages jumped 9 cents, or 0.3%, to $26.74, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means wages have increased 2.9% over the last year — the biggest gain since the end of the Great Recession in June 2009.The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and hasn’t increased since 2009. But many states and municipalities enacted laws to raise the wage this year….
The reason I dissented is that the YoY% increase for nonsupervisory workers was only 2.4% — right in the range it has been for over a year. As Jared Bernstein, who called the number “A Nice Wage Pop,”  pointed out:
There were some weak spots in the report. Wage growth for the lower-paid 80% of the workforce that have production or non-managerial jobs was up only 2.4%, implying that faster wage growth last month mostly benefited higher-paid workers.
Both types of workers are literally from the same survey — i.e., the one measure is a subset of participants in the whole survey.  So if minimum wage hikes were responsible for the big YoY increase, we should see it in their hourly wages.
In January’s case, we don’t.
Since nonsupervisory workers account for about 80% of all workers (h/t Bill McBride), we can back them out of the total figure, and calculate the YoY% increase in wages for managers…
While regular workers saw nominal wages go up a little under 0.2% per hour, their bosses saw wages go up 0.8% per hour!
So this is pretty rich. The Fed and the investor classes are getting worried that the labor markets might be getting too tight, as shown in the wage data…when properly disaggregated, it shows instead that what is going on is ho-hum increases for the masses, and more transfers from them to the managerial classes.
Now in terms of the bigger picture, so far, even though the stock market has looked very much ahead of itself, and could well have some more air taken out of it before it settles down (and that could be an intermittently very bumpy ride that takes some time to play out), there aren’t any signs of blowback to credit markets or lending institutions. Even very big stock market busts with no meaningful debt market involvement, like the dot-bomb era, have only limited real economy impact....
But as the discussion above suggests, the real danger is that the neoliberal model is increasingly under stress, as the consequences of rising inequality and unheard-of low levels of the benefits of growth going to laborers undermines the legitimacy of the system and is producing bad outcomes ranging from political fracture to falling life expectancy and an opioid crisis that is in large measure the result of the collapse of typically rural communities. The last thing the US needed was more transfers to the rich in the form of the Trump tax bill. So while Mr. Market may recover his sunny mood, the foundations of the economy continue to rot.

Work Futures Daily - A Barrage of Reports on the Future of Work
Looks like the future is about 15 minutes away, or less.
2018-04-09 Beacon NY - In just the past few days, I've come across no less that three new reports on the future of work. They are coming from all points of the compass, and I haven't had a chance to read them in detail, but the first order takeaway is that the domain of discourse we call 'the future of work' is now ground zero for a broad spectrum of policy, economic, and sociological debates.

Comments from Readers
Phil Wolff (self-styled 'GDPR wonk and wearer of appropriately industrial chic in the Pacific Northwest') chimes in on dress codes:
I like the "dress appropriately" dress code. It decentralizes responsibility and authority. It puts the folks who know context best (which is rarely HR) in charge. They'll balance safety, formality, utility, and enterprise values as needed instead of a priori from a distance. It also makes sense as organizational boundaries blur, more people work offsite and with control over their workplaces, and more of the workforce are free agents. If HR was in charge would you ever have been able to do a year of swag t-shirts?
Phil is referring to the time I auctioned off my body-as-billboard for 220 days, agreeing to wear sponsors' t-shirts. I had to use a spreadsheet since I randomized which days they got.
...
Jim Meredith goes along with commentary from Peggy Noonan about Zuck's dress in If Adults Won't Grow Up, Nobody Will:
I have spent the past few days watching old videos of the civil-rights era, the King era, and there is something unexpectedly poignant in them. When you see those involved in that momentous time, you notice: They dressed as adults, with dignity. They presented themselves with self-respect. Those who moved against segregation and racial indignity went forward in adult attire—suits, dresses, coats, ties, hats—as if adulthood were something to which to aspire. As if a claiming of just rights required a showing of gravity. Look at the pictures of Martin Luther King Jr. speaking, the pictures of those marching across the Edmund Pettus bridge, of those in attendance that day when George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door and then stepped aside to the force of the federal government, and suddenly the University of Alabama was integrated. Even the first students who went in, all young, acted and presented themselves as adults. Of course they won. Who could stop such people?
I miss their style and seriousness. What we’re stuck with now is Mark Zuckerberg’s .
Facebook ’s failings are now famous and so far include but are perhaps not limited to misusing, sharing and scraping of private user data, selling space to Russian propagandists in the 2016 campaign, playing games with political content, starving journalism of ad revenues, increasing polarization, and turning eager users into the unknowing product. The signal fact of Mr. Zuckerberg is that he is supremely gifted in one area—monetizing technical expertise by marrying it to a canny sense of human weakness. Beyond that, what a shallow and banal figure. He too appears to have difficulties coming to terms with who he is. Perhaps he hopes to keep you, too, from coming to terms with it, by literally dressing as a child, in T-shirts, hoodies and jeans—soft clothes, the kind 5-year-olds favor. In interviews he presents an oddly blank look, as if perhaps his audiences will take blankness for innocence. As has been said here, he is like one of those hollow-eyed busts of forgotten Caesars you see in museums.
But he is no child; he is a giant bestride the age, a titan, one of the richest men not only in the world but in the history of the world. His power is awesome.
I am not really down with Noonan's perspective. I don't buy the notion that t-shirt, jeans, hoodie is the dress of children: it was originally clothing of the working class, later adopted by left-leaning artists and the counter-culture, and now the de facto mass, informal clothing style, and still, the clothing of the working class, too.
Still and again, clothing styles change. A hundred years ago, today's formal business suit would have been too informal for questioning in Congress. So-called morning dress would have been required: morning coat, waistcoat, striped trousers, and hat. Indicating seriousness by wearing ritually prescribed clothing is timeless, but the cut of the clothes is constantly shifting, constantly modernizing. In ten years the requirement for the tie may be old-fashioned, but men will still be wearing long pants in Congress.
On Automation
Barclays has released Robots at the Gate, where the investment bank jumps into the debate about the impact of AI-driven automation on work. The report's authors, Ajay Rajadhyaksha and Aroop Chatterjee, work in Barclay's Macro Research group, and come down squarely on the side of Anotherism, as in AI is 'just another labor-saving technology'. They employ many of the common arguments — ATMs did not end bank teller jobs, '40% of the population used to work on farms and now only 2% do but they are employed', and they even have a section entitled 'This time is no different' — but have fairly chilling data when they zoom down to specific sectors or classes of work.
Consider this example:
Tumblr media
And their commentary:
Self-driving vehicles have the potential to have a large effect not only on the transportation sector, but also on other industries that rely on driving to a high degree.[^34] Roughly 3.9 million workers in the US directly operate motor vehicles, including 1.7 million truck drivers. A further 11.9 million workers deliver services that require vehicles. Together, these represent roughly 11% of the total workforce (Figure 9). From a capital stock perspective, motor vehicles represent roughly 12% of the total stock of equipment across all business sectors (based on Bureau of Economic Analysis data). Business investment in motor vehicles ($335bn per year) represents a little over half of the total final domestic sales.
Autonomous vehicles’ impact depends on whether it is labour saving or productivity enhancing. For the direct motor vehicle operators, it is likely largely to have labour-saving effects. Motor vehicle operators tend to score lower on knowledge outside of their narrow field, have limited cross-functional skills, have lower education levels and so on, and automation is likely to increase unemployment levels among these workers.
For sectors of the economy that employ individuals who use motor vehicles to deliver other services (e.g., security, electricians, mechanics of all sorts), autonomous vehicles are likely to benefit by providing greater productivity, such as the ability to focus.
So, autonomous vehicles will have an enormous impact on a long list of industries, decreasing the hours of work by people dedicated to driving. Barclay's concedes that for many drivers, automation is likely to increase unemployment levels. And Barclay's is making the argument in the other cases that the increased productivity coming from other classes of workers who will need to spend less time driving won't be immediately translated into working fewers hours allocated to those workers. What is stopping their employers from simply pocketing the savings, however?
Still, the raw data is worth looking at, even if the conclusions could be reversed if an Otherist had been writing the prose.
US Policy Direction and The Future of Work
A much more helpful report, The Work Ahead, has been released by a Council on Foreign Relations' Independent Task Force, headed by Penny Prizker and John Engler, and written by Edward Alden and Laura Taylor-Kale.
I will share the findings and recommendations from the report's executive summary, here:
The seven major findings of the Task Force are:
Accelerating technological change will alter or eliminate many human jobs. Although many new jobs will be created, the higher-paying ones will require greater levels of education and training. In the absence of mitigating policies, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) are likely to exacerbate inequality and leave more Americans behind.
Embracing technological innovation and speeding adoption are critical for U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. Openness to trade and immigration are also vital for maintaining U.S. technological leadership.
Strong economic growth that leads to full employment has been the most consistently successful approach for raising the wages of Americans.
The lack of accessible educational opportunities that are clearly and transparently linked to the changing demands of the job market is a significant obstacle to improving work outcomes for Americans.
U.S. efforts to help displaced workers are inadequate. Unemployment insurance is too rigid and covers too few workers, and retraining programs are not based on the best global models.
Too many jobs are going unfilled because of restrictions related to credentialing, mobility, and hiring practices. More could also be done to create new opportunities in higher-unemployment regions.
Current workplace benefits—from sick leave to retirement plans—are too often available only to full-time employees, and are not adapted to the emerging world in which more workers are part-time, contract, or gig workers.
[...]
The seven major recommendations of the Task Force are:
Governments should adopt an explicit goal of creating better jobs and career paths for Americans. Initiatives should aim especially at attracting investment and revitalizing entrepreneurship.
The United States needs to remain a world leader in technology and innovation. This should be supported by increased public and private research and development (R&D), support for commercialization of new research, and an open door to highly skilled immigrants.
Governments should implement policies aimed at maintaining strong growth and demand for labor. Employers should commit themselves to a “high-road workplace” that offers employees decent pay, training, scheduling, and benefits. Special measures are needed for communities struggling to attract investment and jobs.
The United States should set and meet a goal of bringing postsecondary education within the reach of all Americans and linking education more closely to employment outcomes.
Unemployment insurance should be overhauled to reflect the realities of the current economy, and mid-career retraining programs should adopt the best features of the European “flexicurity” models.
Governments and employers should work to reduce barriers to labor mobility for Americans, including high housing costs, occupational licensing restrictions, and inflexible hiring practices.
The United States should create portable systems of employment benefits tied to individual employees rather than to jobs themselves. Employers should also help fill the gap by expanding benefits for their part-time and contingent workers.
Finally, the Task Force recommends that the president and the nation’s governors create a national commission on the U.S. workforce to carry out research, share best practices, and conduct public outreach on workforce challenges. This should be the start of an urgent effort to put workforce issues at the center of the national agenda.
At the turn of the twentieth century, when the United States was unsettled by similarly rapid technological change, the high school movement produced a boost in educational attainment that was critical to U.S. economic success and to the country’s rise to global leadership. Success in the twenty-first century will require the same type of bottom-up, cross-generational effort, with Americans demanding that governors, local leaders, businesses, and educational institutions rise to meet these challenges. There should be vigorous competition among states to pioneer new models and lead by example. The federal government needs to encourage, support, share, and build on such efforts. With such a broad-based movement, the United States can build a more productive, inclusive, and resilient economy for all Americans—becoming once again a model for the world.
Hear, hear!
I hope to have a more in detail analysis soon. [Subscribers reviewing the online version of the report will be able to see my commentary via Highly in the Work Futures Slack community's #research channel].

UNC Chapel Hill Reports 2 COVID-19 Clusters
Aug. 14, 4:32 p.m. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill informed students, faculty and staff members this afternoon that it has identified two clusters of COVID-19 cases at student housing complexes.
A cluster is five or more cases in close proximity within a single residential hall or dwelling.  Those in the clusters “are isolating and receiving medical monitoring,” according to an alert issued this afternoon. Local health officials have been notified, and efforts are under way to identify others who could have been exposed.
“All residents in these living spaces have been provided additional information about these clusters and next steps,” the alert said. “Contact tracing has been initiated with direct communication to anyone determined to have been a close contact with a positive individual. A close contact is defined as someone who has been within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes when either person has not been wearing a face covering. Those identified as a close contact will be notified directly and provided with further guidance.”
The clusters are at the Ehringhaus Community and Granville Towers. Ehringhaus has four-bedroom suites and is heavily skewed toward first-year student residents. Granville Towers are privately managed.
Chapel Hill’s COID-19 dashboard shows main campus housing occupancy at 60.7 percent as of Monday and Granville Towers occupancy at 76.6 percent.
The university cited the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act when issuing the alert. That act set requirements for disseminating health and safety information on campus. But Chapel Hill does not plan to provide details about individual positive cases, citing privacy considerations and laws.
Chapel Hill held its first day of classes Monday.

Twenty-Eight COVID-19 Cases at the U. of Tennessee, Knoxville
Aug. 13, 5:30 p.m. The University of Tennessee at Knoxville reported that 20 students and 8 staff members have COVID-19, WATE News reported today. Due to potential exposure, 155 people are self-isolating, officials said. Students started moving into residence halls at the university on Aug. 9.

Medical Advisers to NCAA Discourage Fall Sports Competition
Aug. 13, 1:30 p.m. Several medical experts with key roles in advising the National Collegiate Athletic Association offered discouraging words about fall sports competition in a conference call with reporters Thursday, according to news reports.
“I feel like the Titanic. We have hit the iceberg, and we’re trying to make decisions of what time should we have the band play,” ESPN quoted Dr. Carlos Del Rio, executive associate dean at Emory University and a member of the NCAA’s COVID-19 advisory panel, as saying. “We need to focus on what’s important. What’s important right now is we need to control this virus. Not having fall sports this year, in controlling this virus, would be to me the No. 1 priority.”
Most college sports conferences have opted not to hold intercollegiate competition this fall, but several leagues that play high-profile (and high-dollar) football are planning to play on.
Dr. Colleen Kraft, an associate professor of infectious diseases at Emory and a member of the NCAA panel, said of the leagues planning to compete: “There will be transmissions [of COVID-19], and they will have to stop their games,” according to ESPN.
Officials at the Big Ten and the Pac-12, the two leagues in the Power Five football series that have opted not to play this fall, have especially cited concerns about apparently increased incidence of myocarditis, a potentially deadly heart condition, related to COVID-19. The NCAA’s chief medical officer, Dr. Brian Hainline, said on the conference call that between 1 and 2 percent of all athletes who’ve been tested by NCAA members have tested positive for the coronavirus, and that at least a dozen have myocarditis, ESPN reported.
Dr. Kraft said colleges were “playing with fire” regarding myocarditis.

Athletic Departments May Need ‘Extraordinary Support’ as Cancellations Hit Revenue
Aug. 13, 12:23 p.m. The recent spate of athletic conference decisions to postpone fall sports means substantial revenue shocks for college athletic departments, and cutting expenses will not always be enough to absorb the blow, according to a new report from Moody’s Investors Service.
Because sports are strategically important for universities, Moody’s expects universities to provide “extraordinary support” like internal loans in order to stay current on debt payments for athletic facilities. Colleges and universities may tap their financial reserves to close budget gaps tied to the pandemic, the ratings agency said in a report released Thursday morning.
“Athletic expenses have grown significantly in recent years, including certain fixed costs such as debt service, which will impact universities’ ability to adjust to the disruption,” said Dennis Gephardt, vice president at Moody’s, in a statement.
Fall sports cancellations reached a crescendo this week when two of the most important conferences for college football, the Big Ten and the Pac-12, joined many non-Power Five conferences and programs in pulling the plug on fall sports amid COVID-19 concerns. Although the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference and Big 12 were still hoping to play football, the ramifications of existing cancellations will be felt across higher education.
Football has been the biggest driver of athletic revenue in the sector. Football contributed $5.8 billion in 2018, a whopping 40 percent of the $14.6 billion in total athletic revenue counted by Moody’s. Growth in revenue has been driven by media rights like the payments television networks make for the right to broadcast games.
Disappearing ticket sales will also hit revenue. Although some donor support might be expected to offset losses, a significant portion of donor support comes from seating priority programs — donors buying the right to pick seats under certain conditions.
This situation is particularly important because the median athletic department broke even in 2018, meaning a significant number of departments lost money.
Moody’s called that year a relatively strong revenue year. Still, more than a third of Division I public universities, 37 percent, reported expenses exceeded revenue that year. The median operating deficit among that group was 3 percent.
Conferences that generate more athletic revenue generally reported better operating performance than others. The financial health of operations varies greatly across athletic conferences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Compensation for coaches as well as other athletic support and administrative expenses among NCAA Division I members make up the largest portion of the expense base for a combined 35 percent and will be a focus for expense management efforts in fiscal 2021,” Moody’s said in its note. “With games canceled, universities will save some money on game day operations and travel expenses.”
Athletics requires more capital than other arms of higher education. Median debt-to-operating-revenue was 58 percent for public higher education overall, compared to 66 percent for institutions competing in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Facility expenses and debt service at Division I public universities drove increases in debt between 2013 and 2018, with debt growing 54 percent in that period to a total of $2.3 billion.
“Given the revenue shocks, many athletic departments will not be able to cover debt service with net revenue from recurring operations, prompting the need to fill the gap from appropriate auxiliary and/or other reserves. In many cases, this is likely to take the form of internal loans that the athletic departments will need to repay the university over time,” the Moody’s report said.
All of this follows the cancellation of the NCAA basketball tournaments in the spring. Men’s basketball accounted for about 15 percent of 2018 athletic revenue across higher education. Women’s basketball was 7 percent.
Still to be determined is how the spread of COVID-19 affects sports scheduled for later in the year and how universities balance pressures on athletics against pressures to other parts of their operations.
“Budget difficulties at athletic departments will add to the financial strains facing universities, including a tuition revenue pinch, reduced state funding and incremental expenses to combat the coronavirus,” the Moody’s report said.
— Rick Seltzer
A survey by Pearson finds that 77 percent of Americans think that reopening colleges and universities is vital to a healthy economy. But 62 percent say colleges and universities are risking the lives of students by reopening in the fall.
–Scott Jaschik
Aug. 11, 4:40 p.m. The Pac-12, another “Power Five” conference, quickly followed the Big Ten Conference with a decision to postpone fall sports for the remainder of 2020 at its institutions on the West Coast. The postponement also includes winter sports, which are on hold for the remainder of the year, and the conference will consider playing all sports impacted by the decision in 2021, the Pac-12 said in a release about the decision.
Three Power Five conferences, the Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference, which include the nation’s top football programs and gain most from the sport’s financial benefits, have not yet announced postponement of the fall sports season and are moving forward with modified schedules as of Aug. 11.
Aug. 11, 3:32 p.m. The Big Ten Conference officially postponed its 2020-21 fall sports season, including football. The decision affects some of the top college football teams in the country and was discouraged by several federal lawmakers on Monday.
Kevin Warren, commissioner of the Big Ten, said in a news release that athletes’ mental and physical health was “at the center” of the decision and that the coronavirus posed too many potential medical risks for the season to proceed this fall. Spring competition for football and other fall sports, including cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball, will be considered, the Big Ten said in the statement.

Notre Dame President Apologizes for Photos
Aug. 11, 7:20 a.m. Rev. John I. Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame, has apologized for letting several students take photographs of him that were not safe.
“In a few instances, over recent days, I stopped for photos with some of you on the quad,” Father Jenkins wrote to students. “While all of the scientific evidence indicates that the risk of transmission is far lower outdoors than indoors, I want to remind you (and myself!) that we should stay at least six feet apart. I recognize that it’s not easy, particularly when we are reuniting with such great friends. I am sorry for my poor example, and I am recommitting to do my best. I am confident you will too.”
