Started this cover up this afternoon. Covering an old, dark traditional dagger and flower, David was intent on a tiger. With realism in black and grey not going to do the job, we went with this neotrad head. Hey /r/cats, this is going to be a long post because I want to give as much information about the kitty and her living situation as possible. Feel free to skim or read the TL;DR at the end if you have any advice but don't feel like reading all the details. I also put key info in italics throughout the post.Medical History/About the CatMy husband and I adopted a female, five-year-old cat ten days ago. All four of her paws were declawed by her previous owner, but there was no other medical history about her. Previous owner told the shelter that they were leaving her there because they "didn't have time for her." She had mild symptoms of a URI when we adopted her, but the vet at the shelter gave her clearance to leave under the assumption that it was a reaction to the vaccine she received. We named her Pickles, and she's the sweetest girl ever.We took her to the vet earlier this week for a general exam and to make sure the URI was not bacterial since her symptoms had worsened. She was also throwing up frequently, but the vet determined that was due to transitioning her food a bit too quickly after checking her for signs of abnormalities in her abdomen. The vet said she seemed to be recovering well from the URI, and otherwise she seemed perfectly healthy. We switched up the ratio of old food to new food, and her digestive issues have subsided.In general, Pickles is fairly shy. She has adored my husband and I since day one, but she is still a bit spooked by other members of the household (my mom and her boyfriend, a tiny miniature pinscher, and an elderly chihuahua). She was noticeably anxious for the first couple days at home, but we were sure to provide her with a cozy place to hide and give her affection when she felt like interacting with us. She appears to have grown more accustomed to her new life. We have tried using a variety of toys to play with her, but she does not seem interested in playing.The ProblemAs the title suggests, Pickles has been having some problems with consistently using the litter box. She peed on our bed yesterday, and a few hours before we took her to the vet, I found a small bit of thin, yellow liquid that could have been urine. At the time, I assumed it was bile because she was throwing up right before I found it, and it wasn't an amount that would lead me to believe she urinated. She had vomited up bile the day before. I'm not entirely sure what it was because I was asleep until she started throwing up, and I wasn't about to stick my face in it to smell it. We plan to get an enzyme-based cleaner sometime later today to remove the urine smell from the bed. We can't smell it, but Pickles probably can.The Litter BoxWe have a large, covered litter box for her in our bedroom. Since the accident yesterday, I have removed the cover from the litter box in case it was discouraging her from using it. The litter box is designed to fit in a corner (shaped like a triangle with one rounded side), but it is definitely large enough for her to fit her whole body and have room. She is petite, and the box is large even compared to most rectangle-shaped litter boxes.I initially placed the litter box in a corner across from our bed and next to a dresser, but perhaps that location coupled with the cover on the box was making her feel uncomfortably trapped whenever she had to use it. In addition to removing the cover, I have also relocated the litter box to the other side of the dresser, so it's now next to the bedroom door instead of next to the wall. We only close the door when we go to bed because everyone in the house gets up at different times of the morning. We plan to get another litter box for her to use when she feels comfortable exploring the rest of the house, but for now, she doesn't seem to want to leave the general area around our bedroom.The LitterSince she is declawed, I made sure to get a soft litter for her although she doesn't show signs of having sensitivity or pain in her paws. The litter is not perfumed, but it claims to have an herbal mixture that attracts cats. It's made of ground walnut shells and doesn't have a lot of dust in it. It is clumping litter, but it doesn't turn liquid into rock-hard clumps. I clean the litter every time I notice there's something in the box, so it stays pretty damn clean since I'm home all day looking for a job. Like Pickles, we just moved here too. The litter does not smell like waste to me, but it might smell bad to her.Her Current Living Situation/TerritoryOur household is typically quiet. We put a gate at the end of the hallway that leads to our bedroom and bathroom to give her a safe space away from the dogs. She will not jump over the gate, but she has jumped up to and down from much higher surfaces. The house has a pet door for the dogs, so we don't feel comfortable removing the gate at this point in time if she won't jump over it herself. The pet door leads to a fenced-in yard, but even the dogs manage to escape on rare occasions. We definitely don't want to risk her getting hurt in an effort to explore the neighborhood. My mom, understandably, will not restrict her dogs to just the yard and the room with the pet door to allow Pickles to roam the whole house. As soon as we can, we'll be getting one of those fancy, electronic pet doors that only open for pets wearing a key.Recent ChangesOther than the obvious "moving to a completely new environment" change, Pickles has enjoyed ten days of stability. The only thing I could think of that might be bothering her is that my husband has found a job and started going to work a couple days ago, but it's not like he was constantly spending time with her before.TL;DRPickles: five-year-old, female, declawed feline with no other medical records, adopted ten days ago.Problem: not always using the litter box to pee, always uses it to poop.Litter box: large, previously covered and next to wall, now uncovered and next to open door.Litter: soft, walnut-based, unscented, supposedly contains cat attracting herbs.Living situation: quiet household, stays in gated territory despite seeming to be able to leave if desired.Recent changes: husband has started going to work, but that's about it.QuestionsHave you had this problem with your cat?
