DRUMMERS...Be Honest!! I’ve been running through the @drumeoofficial course created by @jaredfalkdrummer called “The Fastest Way to Get Faster”. Over the last few days, I’ve had some thoughts on the way we practice. In this course, there are three modules with 5 exercises in each. Each exercise is to be done for 5 minutes at the fastest speed you can perform it. Jared brings up a very good point during the introduction that I wanted to reiterate with you all today. • In this clip, I’m going through one of the exercises at 195 bpm. I could play it faster, but not for 5 minutes straight without making a mistake. So rather than lie to myself, I brought the tempo down to a speed where I could actually complete the exercise error free. • I see so much about “Focused Practice”. While I totally agree with it, I think it’s important to also have honest practice. There’s no point in cheating yourself. I’ve been guilty of this before and I have been making a conscious effort to really be honest with myself if something wasn’t as good as it could have been. Sorry for the long rant but hopefully this will inspire you to take your practice more seriously! Otherwise, it’s really just a huge waste of time! Thoughts?? Try splitting up your paradiddle between the hihat, ride, and snare. Inside of 16th notes, land your backbeat on the snare for beats 2 + 4. Cool little lick I use quite a bit to get different voicings! Last week, every student in my roster got the same exact Drum Lesson. I taught everyone how to utilize the Garage Band App during your practice! I mainly focused on the “Live Loops” section where you can build your own songs. Not only can you create your own musical piece, but you can set the tempo of the piece. One thing I see a lot with my students is that when they try to play something that is fast, they run out of steam a 1/4 of the way through the song. This is why practicing technique, and training your body to relax is so important. It may look like alot of work to play this track, but it’s really quite easy! I’m not working hard at all!!
