What are the top 5 most middle class things that have ever happened to you?
Ooooooh good question... now I'm going to do the most British thing ever and preface it with a short essay providing half my life story, out of a sense of denial.
Both sides of my family are staunchly working class, as far back as I can find records. They were farm labourers and dock workers and hopped in and out of workhouses. My mum worked housekeeping and cleaning jobs, and my Dad managed to snag a white collar job in a factory out of school (because he's really clever).
But then two complications -
My Dad became a clergyman. This meant that we got to live in nice houses owned by the church he worked for, sometimes in quite affluent areas. We didn't have much money, but still.
2. I managed to get into Oxford University with a gazillion bursaries tied to my parent's low income. I then used the bursary money to fund doing a master's degree, and now I work in academia.
So, am I middle class? I'm begrudgingly realising that I might be? Except if I am I feel like middle class people shouldn't be constantly worrying that their now-retired parents can't afford to switch the heating on, or whether they'll ever live in their own home. And it's alienated me from my extended family, who have jumped to the conclusion that I think I'm better than them.
Anyway, the top 5 most middle class things that have ever happened to me.
One
Last year I got invited to an anniversary meal at my Oxford college, called a gaudy. I nearly didn't go because my time at uni was not very happy and I don't remember some of my contemporaries fondly, but then I figured that if I go, next time I read Dorthy L Sayers excellent book "Gaudy Night," I will have better brain-pictures. So, the setting, for your own brain-pictures:
Tumblr media
Latin grace was sung before the meal, which comprised of salmon confit, followed by venison, followed by black forest gateau, followed by fruit and chocolates and port.
I was sat next to a nice middle aged man with an OBE. When he asked me "So, what do you do?" I decided not to say the job which *actually* pays my bills, but to reply with my evening job: that I make comics. I felt like this was a fun thing to say in a room full of people who Work In The City etc etc.
Except it turned out that he runs one of the UK's biggest comic arts festivals. He offered me free tickets. He offered to put me in touch with publishers. He offered to introduce me to significant people.
And I was like.... oh. Is this how it happens? Like, you're in an Oxford college and you just RUN INTO a posh bloke who Knows People and that's how you finally get a book deal???
Anyway I went to the festival. They had a panel on a yacht. And talked to people, or rather had people talk over me. So many times they'd ask me a question, and then interrupt before I'd given my answer. And I dislike schmoozing SO MUCH.
So uh, yeah, no book deal ;D YET
Two
One time I was wearing my college scarf while I was walking around Durham, and I ended up meeting a very cute elderly couple who went to the same college forty-five years earlier (well, the husband did, the wife wouldn't have been allowed.) They invited my to a dinner party at their house, which turned out to be a very cute little town-house by the river with five stories.
At the time I was doing my Master's degree, and they became kind of surrogate parents who I could call in on for a free hot meal and good conversation. But it was entirely sparked by "going to the same college at Oxford" which is very ew.
Three
Idk there was just this one time I was coming home on the train from having seen the Royal Shakespeare Company's latest production of Much Ado About Nothing and I stopped off somewhere to get sushi and I spent the whole time staring at a wall thinking "What have I become?"
Getting tickets to the ballet from a colleague slots into this catagory, I think.
Four
One time I was asked to open a village fete because the local lady of the manor couldn't make it.
Why me? Apparently "local clergyman's daughter" and "went to Oxford" and "draws silly pictures sometimes" was enough to make me a local celebrity.
I got to give a little speech and judge some cakes and everything.
Five
One time I got invited to a dinner party at CS Lewis' house, the Kilns, and I met his lovely secretary Walter Hooper. I remember being shown around and having a deep impulse to check the backs of all the wardrobes.
When I first went in it was through a door that led straight into his bedroom, and I was told that I could take my coat off and just toss it on the bed. No sooner had I done so than my guide mused, "CS Lewis died in that bed."
So I guess I own a coat that has been on the bed where CS Lewis died, is that middle class?!! Idk

A different construction of history.
Tumblr media
Leila Aboulela, Sudanese-Egyptian economist and statistician turned fiction writer.
Last year, the Macondo Literary Festival embarked on a mission to curate and represent various aspects of the African journey through literature by featuring such writers as Abdulai Silá of Guinea Bissau, Patrice Nganang of Cameroon who doubles as a human rights activist, British writer Hafsa Zayyan, not to mention 2021 Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah.
This year, the Macondo Festival is whetting literary appetites with the promise of hosting none other than acclaimed Sudanese-Egyptian writer Leila Aboulela. What's more, Aboulela will be discussing her latest book "River Spirit." Published in March this year, "River Spirit" has been described as a coming of age novel. And in it, Aboulela parallels the life and vicissitudes of the novel's main protagonist with Sudan's 19th century struggle for self determination.
The physical and emotional displacements of Akuany, a Southern Sudanese girl who's been uprooted from her village in Malakal are used as the backdrop against which Aboulela trots out at least four main characters across the turbulent but rich tapestry of Sudanese history.
And make no mistake, modern Sudanese history has seen it all— from Turco-Egyptian occupation, to the Madhists uprising, to French incursion, to British occupation, to independence from the British, and most recently the partitioning of Sudan into Arab North and Christian or Animist South.
Suffice it to say that Aboulela has always had a penchant for delving into the depths of African history. She has previously teased out the theme of displacement as a result of colonialism, an effort that won her the 2000 Caine Prize for African writing.
Indeed, Aboulela’s Caine Prize winning short story "The Museum" uses the displacement of inanimate artifacts from their original cultural environment, and juxtaposes that displacement with the displacement of peoples from their physical environment or their cultural milieu. Seen behind a museum case, artifacts are labelled in the dominant voice of the colonizer, similar to an African history that's largely been chronicled in the colonizer's voice.
For those who'll be lucky enough to meet her at the Macondo lit fest, here's a snippet of what to expect. Aboulela recently sat down for an interview with Pan-African magazine 'African Arguments,' and shed more light on her quest to recast African history through her novel that's set against the 1884 siege of Khartoum.
________________
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: First, warm congratulations on yet another literary milestone. We would love to know how you came to write this book. Could you tell us about its genesis?
LEILA ABOULELA: I grew up in Khartoum. Our house was about 4km away from the palace on the Blue Nile where, in 1884, an embattled General Charles Gordon used to stand on the roof, looking out with his telescope, desperate for the arrival of the British relief expedition. Khartoum was under siege by the armies of the Mahdi and that thrilling story with its tragic ending is something that has always enthralled me. Knowing the location well and studying the history in school and university, made it a familiar backdrop against which I could set my novel. The very initial idea for River Spirit was of a young man from Edinburgh who becomes fascinated by the vernacular architecture of colonial Sudan. He paints the Nile and starts to dress like a native. When he sketches the wife of a tribal chief and the drawing is discovered, his career and safety are in jeopardy. I ended up deviating quite far from this original idea. As I was writing, the woman in the drawing/ painting took centre stage, and the artist no longer became the main character.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: The book centres on Akuany, an orphaned girl who is sold into slavery. Where did your inspiration for her character come from?
ABOULELA: In the Sudan Archives at Durham university, I found a bill of sale for a woman called Zamzam. I was shocked by this discovery. I knew that slavery existed in nineteenth century Sudan, but to hold in my hand a bill of sale, with an actual monetary figure and the names of the people involved, was quite startling. I also found a petition detailing the case of an enslaved woman who had escaped with a stolen item of clothing from her mistress. She had gone back to her former master, and it was against him that the petition was raised. I found this situation intriguing and complex enough for me to want to fill in the gaps with fiction. I started researching East African slavery, the extent of it, how it differed from the transatlantic West Coast slavery and how nineteenth century Sudan was a gateway to the lucrative markets of Cairo and Istanbul.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: Akuany isn’t the book’s only female voice – other characters include Fatimah, Yaseen’s mother, and his wife, Salha. It’s refreshing to have so many female voices on a period that we usually only hear through the voices of men. Could you talk a little about this?
ABOULELA: Unfortunately, women are merely footnotes in the historical records. I had to dig and pick up threads here and there. Certainly, I never found a first-person account from a woman’s perspective. Throughout the Mahdist wars, women accompanied the army. They cooked, nursed and set up market stalls every step of the way. They also played a part in espionage, gathering data and passing it on – this inspired the role played by Yaseen’s mother in the novel. I was also excited to discover that the Mahdi had sent a woman ambassador to the Khartoum palace. I also used that in the novel.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: As popular interest in the historical novel in Africa grows, what are your thoughts on its future in African fiction?
ABOULELA: Mainstream history has been written by the coloniser. This is their truth. It is time for us to tell ours. When Africans write history, we are not necessarily saying something about the world today. Much of the motivation comes from wanting to tell our side of the story. I am more excited by African historical novels than by any other genre. At the moment, Africa’s encounter with Europe is the focus of much historical fiction. Perhaps in the future, writers will move away from this and delve into the even deeper past before European colonialism. There is a rich, fascinating history that needs to be told.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: Could you please share your experience of researching and writing this novel? While a number of the central characters were actual historical figures, were the other major characters purely invented, are they composites of individuals you encountered during your research, or are they stand-in figures perhaps for individuals you did not want to name?
ABOULELA: None are stand-in individuals. The actual historical figures were the Mahdi, Gordon, Sheikh Amin Al-Darir and Rabiha. Much has been written about the Mahdi and even more about Gordon and there were his journals too. So apart from conjuring up Gordon’s voice, there was a large amount of material to work with – and that posed a challenge too because I had to be selective. On the contrary, there was very little on Al-Darir, head of the Khartoum ulema, so I depended on my imagination. Rabiha appears in the historical records as a footnote – the woman who overheard a conversation as she was herding her goats and then ran through the night to warn the revolutionaries about the government’s intended attack. She is mentioned time and again in every record but with little detail. I enjoyed fleshing her out and elevating her position through my imagination.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: Could you tell us more about the concept of the ‘Mahdi’ in Islam?
ABOULELA: The Mahdi is not mentioned in the Qur’an. He is, though, described in great detail in many of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, the Hadith. He is described as the Expected Redeemer, the Rightly Guided One, who would, close to the end of Time, bring justice and prosperity after years of earthquakes, tyranny and oppression. His name would be Muhammed Abdullah, he would rule for seven or eight prosperous years and during these years many of the imminent signs that herald the end of the world will take place. Throughout the history of Islam, around thirty men claimed to be the Expected Mahdi.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: You speak of having grown up 4km from Gordon’s Palace. Are there any other elements of your family’s history in the novel?
ABOULELA: My great grandfather was an immigrant from the south of Egypt, and he was an employee in the colonial government. He was staunchly opposed to the Mahdi in every possible way. When the Mahdi and his army entered Omdurman, my great grandfather dug a pit in his yard and hid his five daughters there because he was afraid they would be raped. I used the idea of the pit in the novel but to hide a man rather than young girls!
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: Given your reliance on the colonial archive, do you believe it is important to widen access especially to Western archives for writers who do not have access to records of their own history? We ask this in the light of the current artefacts restitution campaign. While its target is looted African artefacts, the bulk of the colonial documentary archive was carted off to imperial capitals at the end of the colonial era and remains largely inaccessible to Africans on the continent. Is there a need for a similar restitutive campaign targeting the colonial archive?
ABOULELA: Because I am bilingual, I did not need to rely solely on the archives found in Britain. Half of my research was dependent on Arabic records. Even though some of these primary sources had been translated into English and I read English faster, I read them in the original Arabic. They are brilliant because they expose ordinary people’s day to day lives during these wars. Through them I was able to learn about the texture of life at the time, how people ate, travelled, communicated, their expectations and anxieties. In answer to your question, I believe it is important to widen access and a restitutive campaign is justified. I would also stress the issue of records written in mother tongues and translations because it is within these local languages that the primary African perspective resides. It is shocking for example that one of my most valued primary sources, The Memoirs of Babiker Badri (born in 1861), written in Arabic and widely published in Sudan, is out of print in its English translation. And even that translation, carried out in the early 1960s can do with some freshening up. This is a vital African text and yet it is not widely accessible due to the issue of translation. I am sure there are other texts too, written in African languages, that need to be translated and published.
AFRICAN ARGUMENTS: Finally, we are eager to hear more about your research into slavery in the old Ottoman Empire that tyrannised much of East Africa and the Horn. What is its enduring legacy in the region, its hinterlands and diasporas?
ABOULELA: To my surprise, I did not find abundant resources on East Coast Slavery. It is definitely an area that needs to be further researched. Ironically after decades of active engagement in the trans-Atlantic slavery, Britain launched a passionate attack on the Ottoman/Arab/Egyptian slave trade. Suppressing it became a reason for British expansion and the subsequent colonisation of Sudan. As a result, much that was written about the Ottoman slave trade is laden with a righteous European indignation that was intent on justifying the need for colonial expansion in order to suppress the brutal East Coast slave trade. When people think of slavery, they are likely to think of the long Atlantic passage and the plantation culture accompanied by deep systematic racism. The East Coast slave experience was different. Capitalism was not the driving force of the Arabs and Ottomans. Instead, they mostly enslaved men for military service and women for domestic labour. You ask about the legacy. When I read about the Sudanese child soldiers recruited by Saudi Arabia for their war in Yemen, and the Ethiopian maids abused in Lebanon, my blood runs cold.

Honeysuckle Tea House Wedding in Chapel Hill, NC
~Rustic Fall Wedding at the Honeysuckle Tea House in Chapel Hill, NC~
Tumblr media
Just outside the heart of Chapel Hill, at the enchanting Honeysuckle Tea House, Criss and Emily were joined by their friends and family in celebrating their wedding day. They began with a private first look at their home in Durham, joined by their dog, Wellie, before meeting up with their loved ones during the ceremony.
Tumblr media
Honeysuckle Tea House
Honeysuckle Tea House is a wedding and event venue located just 15 minutes outside of the heart of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The venue is hosted on a 30-acre farm full of gorgeous and sustainable greenery. The venue’s team describes it as “a hidden gem just 15 minutes away from Chapel Hill…your destination for majestic nature, rustic charm, and unforgettable events.” The venue focuses on sustainability in all its practices and is even constructed out of shipping containers and other repurposed materials. I absolutely love this venue as it offers stunning views with cute quirks around every corner. This venue is just as beautiful in the spring, as the flowers bloom, as it is in the fall when the leaves start to change colors. The Honeysuckle Tea House is especially gorgeous at night. The venue has multiple indoor and outdoor seating areas, a hammock circle, and a large tent outdoors all decorated in lights. This ambient lighting allows for the perfect mood to get the dance floor going. At Criss and Emily’s wedding, their guests absolutely tore it up on the dance floor and had a blast. I absolutely adored being able to capture some special moments from their dance party. Another great bonus of the Honeysuckle Tea House is that they offer their own signature products! From tea blends to farm products and mead, trying some of their products is an absolute must. At this time the Honeysuckle Tea House is available for booking special events, retreats & weddings. They also host special events and festivals for the general public. Feel free to check them out, I highly recommend them!

Private First Look
Criss and Emily began their special day with a private and intimate first look at their home in Durham, North Carolina. They were joined by their lovely dog, Wellie, who was a great addition to this moment. Criss initially stood with his back facing Emily before the final reveal. This made for some adorable shots where you can feel the anticipation from the couple. After the initial reveal, we captured some shots on a bench in their backyard. There were actually some cute yellow flowers that paired perfectly with Emily’s yellow dress which I made sure to get in the shot as they sat on the bench. Eventually, Wellie could no longer contain his excitement and joined his parents by the bench for a few photos. We continued to capture some different poses before moving to the front yard. Their wedding was actually right before Halloween and their front yard was decorated perfectly for the occasion. From pumpkins to spooky Halloween decorations, we were able to get some pretty fun and creative photos that capture Criss and Emily’s personality as well as the fall weather. I love when couples can have fun in front of the camera and just let loose. I think that often makes for the most memorable photos and I think Criss and Emily were able to do just that. It seemed like they had a lot of fun messing around with the decorations and posing for the camera. After the first look at their home, there were a few hours before the ceremony began at the Honeysuckle Tea House.

Rustic Fall Ceremony
Criss & Emily’s Ceremony took place at the Honeysuckle Tea House in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The venue was perfectly decorated with lights and fall décor which fit the overall atmosphere. At the end of the aisle, under the white arch, were multiple pumpkins which paired perfectly with the yellows and oranges of the surrounding foliage and with Emily’s stunning yellow dress. Criss and Emily shared beautiful vows that captured many inside jokes and displayed their deep love for one another. Many of their vows centered around moss, as Emily is very fond of moss. Emily happens to be so fascinated by moss that they even had mini terrariums as wedding favors for their guests! The ceremony was full of laughs, tears, and smiles. After Criss and Emily shared their first kiss and walked down the aisle, we took some portraits in the farm area of the venue. These colors were absolutely stunning and fit the desired fall aesthetic perfectly. Wellie even joined the newlyweds during this section to get some more photos together.

Furry Friends
One of my favorite things to see at weddings is the inclusion of a couple’s pets! Having your pet as part of your special day can be so much fun and make for some amazing memories. It can be difficult to think about all the added elements that come along with having your pet as part of your wedding day. Couples will often have a trusted friend or family member responsible for taking care of the animal on the day of or even hiring a third-party service that takes care of your pet for the day. These services will even bring your fur baby to the venue, ensure they are getting the best of care, and allow your guests to not have to worry. When it comes to photos with your furry friend, it's important to just have fun! You know more than anyone how to make sure your animal has fun and what will make them smile for the camera. Criss and Emily seemed to have so much fun with their dog Willie. He was absolutely adorable and was one of the highlights of the night.

On St Ninian’s Beach
26th June 2023
I had booked the most basic accommodation on the overnight boat from Kirkwall to Lerwick, a reclining seat. But I had hoped not to use it, preferring the illegal option of staying in my van bed. I had researched on the internet and read that it was something truckers did do. An article from an incident in January of 2006 was easily found, when in stormy conditions three trucks had toppled over during the crossing. On arrival in Lerwick it was found 6 drivers had stayed in their cabs, one stuck there until he was rescued.
Northlink stresses how dangerous it is, yet they are quite happy to let my dog stay there.. do they value his life any less than mine? By circumstance rather than choice, I boarded last, and had to reverse on with the studious attention of all the boarding crew. At the appropriate moment I disappeared behind the curtain. They either didn’t see, or weren’t bothered. Before the boat sailed I was in bed, waking at 7:15 am as drivers returned to their vehicles. The coach driver next to me gave me a knowing nod. It was clear he had done the same.
By 8 am I was at St Ninian’s Beach, about a half hour drive away, in heavy rain and just 9C. Roja and I had breakfast, and I read while Roja dozed and the rain eased, and by mid-morning the cloud cleared and the sun emerged.
This is my second visit of the year to the Wild Atlantic coast, the first being the Costa del Morte in Galicia in February, equally impressive.
The first photo is of the ruin of St Ninians’s Chapel, which dates back to the 12th Century. Before that it was an Iron Age Burial Ground. It’s other claim to fame is that in 1958 a local schoolboy found a wooden box on the site, which contained 28 silver objects of Pictish treasure.
Tumblr media
St Ninian’s Isle is quite a spectacular sight from the car park, with its jagged rock cliffs, strikingly green pasture, and it’s shell-sand tombolo, the finest example of one in Western Europe. It is occasionally breached, in storms and at high tide, but today it was at its best, a superb wander though Roja chose not to use it and swim alongside for most of the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The perimeter of the Isle is about four and a half miles, but most who walk as far as the island, then choose shortcuts. As with most of the ocean facing coasts here, the south and west headlands are the wildest and most spectacular. There were a few other visitors. I met the couple in the other campervan at the carpark, from Durham, and prior to that at Dentdale, and we chatted for a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were back at the van for 2 pm, and spent the afternoon with the dramatic backdrop trying to concentrate enough to attend to a few business matters.
Last week here was the Shetland Noir Book Festival, attended by writers such as Martin Edwards, Val McDermid, Ann Cleeves and Elly Griffiths. They even had a session here at St Ninian’s Beach. Cleeves write the Shetland series, that has now been adapted for television. It strikes me that the literary body count here on the tranquil Shetland Islands is bigger than most places, with the possible exception of Midsomer.
Tumblr media
These rocky outcrops put me in mind of Chris Cameron, who is currently mid-way through his 60 day record attempt for the longest stay on a remote uninhabited North Atlantic rock, on Rockall, 200 miles west of St Kilda, and 300 miles from the mainland. It says a lot about the teaching profession that a guy has to go to such lengths to get a peaceful break. Maybe he won’t return to his post, and stay on Rockall.
Tumblr media
Roja seems unbothered by the various dive-bomb attacks from the sea birds he receives. They concern themselves with him rather than me thankfully. With my untrained eye, those who bombed him include, the Fulmar which comes off the cliffs and hovers in the wind, the territorial Curlew with its recognisable squeal and curved beak from the scrub land, and the much rarer Arctic Tern from its slumber in the grass.
And a ‘spot-the-van’ pic..

Recommended Books to Read during Lent 2023
Tumblr media
Before Easter festivities, the season of Lent is one of introspection and preparation. Christians are supposed to be prepared for the fullness of life that the resurrection promises by going through this renewal of life as a disciple of Jesus.
During Lent, we pray to the Lord by studying the Bible, serve others by giving alms, and develop self-control by fasting. Your Lenten days can be more meditative and meaningful if you engage in daily spiritual readings.
We’ve selected a few Recommended Books to Read during Lent 2023. Let's have a look.
Lent with Evelyn Underhill
Evelyn Underhill died more than 50 years ago. Still, her devotional writings continue to guide people interested in learning more about the "inner life" of the mystical Christian tradition. These readings are intended to enhance Lenten observance by allowing the reader to follow Underhill's mental process.
While he was still a freshman at General Theological Seminary, the editor's encounter with Underhill's writings inspired him to pursue a thorough understanding of her works. As a result, he has expertly selected readings from these that are suitable for every day of Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Eve, and that largely adhere to liturgical themes. Now again available in print, these selections were made to enhance Lenten devotion by enabling the reader to follow Underhill's thoughts from Ash Wednesday's spiritual inventory topic through Easter Saturday's joyful anticipation of God's final Gift.
Lent for Everyone: Mark Year B
N. T. Wright, a well-known biblical scholar and author, offers his translation of the Bible, a brief meditation, and a prayer for each day of the season to encourage readers to consider how the book relates to their lives today.
This third volume of a three-volume series that covers the three years of the Revised Common Lectionary is a Lent lectionary resource using Tom Wright's For Everyone Bible translation. The reading from the Gospel for the year and a reflection by Tom Wright are assigned for each day of Lent. Matthew Year A (the second volume) was a significant component of The Big Read 2011, and the book grew out of an effort to promote Lent reading in the diocese of Durham.
The Little Way of Lent: Meditations in the Spirit of St. Therese of Lisieux
Lent is not meant to foster morbid gloominess and debilitating self-loathing, but to thrust us into the heart of Divine love.—From the Introduction.
This book's daily Lenten meditations, which are all inspired by St. Thérèse's Little Way of Spiritual Childhood, will change you as well by assisting you in shifting your attention away from what you have done to displease God and towards what he has done to redeem you.
The Passion Readings for Three Voices: Jerusalem Bible Version
Presenting narratives of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, this work is arranged for reading by three voices according to the traditional method in the liturgy.
The Gospel texts included in this perennially popular book, which is currently in its 29th printing, are taken from the renowned Jerusalem Bible, one of the first Bibles to be published in understandable, modern English.
The JB was praised as a marvel of textual precision and contemporary style that adhered as closely as possible to the original meaning of the ancient texts it was translated from.
These are recommended books for children:
Celebrating Lent – Picture Book
Children can learn about the holy season of Lent and how it serves as a time of preparation for Jesus' Resurrection on Easter Sunday through this book by famous author Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM, Conv.
Colouring Book About Lent
An innovative and entertaining method for kids to learn about  Jesus' Resurrection. With lovely colouring pages for them to colour, this colouring book describes the Lenten season in language that kids can comprehend.Michael Goode wrote the text, and Margaret A. Buono did the artwork.
Hoping these books help you to start your journey together as a community and with Jesus during lent.

Authors can hear their characters speak?
Tumblr media
Some writers claim that they can hear their characters from their stories. For example, Enid Blyton said she could 'watch and hear everything they did' or Alice Walker who describes how her characters would 'come for a visit and talk'. A study was made on the topic and it turns out that the experience is very common, with 2/3 of authors claiming that they can hear their characters as they work.
Researchers from Durham University, along with the Guardian and the Edinburgh international book festival, made a survey for approximately 181 authors. 63% of authors they could hear the characters with a further 61% claiming that they could act independently.
“I hear them in my mind. They have distinct voice patterns and tones, and I can make them carry on conversations with each other in which I can always tell who is ‘talking’,” claimed anonymous writer. “They sometimes tell me that what I have in mind for them isn’t right – that they would never behave or speak that way. I don’t usually answer back,” said another anonymous writer.
56% of the writers also reported that they often had visual or other sensory experiences with their characters as they wrote and 1/5 of them even claiming that they could feel their characters were occupying the physical space around them. A further 15% percent said they could enter a dialogue (or conversation) with their characters.

Where can you buy the Basic Fun retro Twinkle Eye ponies?
Tumblr media
These are the stores I know about, if you know other places let me know!

All Time Toys
Cat ‘n Mouse Toys and Games
Tahoe Toys & Treasures
Tomfoolery Toys - Contact them via phone or email if you want specific ponies, or they’ll send you random ones. But this is the Twinkle Eye pony set, not the Rainbow pony set like the title says ;)
Wigwam’s Toys (UK store) - Not listed yet, but they’ve carried every previous Basic Fun line so they’re a good bet
Five Little Diamonds (UK store) - Listed but not in stock yet. However, they will let you reserve them in advance!
Toy Street (UK store) - Listed but not in stock yet. Note that they are listed as “Rainbow ponies Wave 4″. You can also search by them by individual pony name, like “pony Fizzy”.
Toy Masters (Manitoba, Canada)
Playful Mind Toys (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
Retro Festive (Oakville, Ontario, Canada)
The Rocking Horse (Kingston, Ontario, Canada)
Note that most of the online options are small, independent toy stores.  If there are small toy stores in your town, check them out!  The Twinkle Eye ponies could be closer than you think!
Also, your local small toy store might be willing to order the ponies for you if you ask nicely! :)
