Method of Killing: The Eye Collector is a very methodical 'killer'. She will first begin by studying the victim, stalking and learning their routine, and when they're vulnerable. Then, when the time is right, she will 'politely remove' them from their premises to an isolated location either through drugging the victim or paying off people to bring them to her. She will then tie them down and depending on their behavior either sedate them and carefully or forcibly remove their eye(s) before abandoning them in another isolated location where the victim may or may not have a chance of finding society again. The Eye Collector will never directly kill someone, but if they bleed out in the location or die from the process, then she will simply discard them.

Brief Background: The Eye Collector, previously known as Myrrha Wilson, was a non-human adopted into a human family and society. Labeled as a special needs child, Myrrha lived a very coddled and downright unfulfilling life, keenly aware she didn't belong but with nowhere else to go, she was forced to stay with her only solace being books on ophthalmology, the study of eyes. Developing a fascination at a young age due to the fact human eyes were incredibly different from hers and her peoples', Myrrha would use this as a grounding force, reading and studying constantly while struggling with urges to hurt, be it herself or others. This would come to a head when she was 15 wherein Myrrha would take up self-harming and struggling with the fact she was 'playing a role' she would develop aggression that would translate as delusion or psychosis to the humans around her. This would lead her to go to therapy and be heavily medicated to the point her non-human abilities were inhibited and she'd be labeled as 'normal' by human society standards. It worked as a double edged sword however, because whilst her abilities were inhibited she would be able to be "normal enough" to get into university and devote herself to becoming an eye doctor until her parents insisted she get a boyfriend. This would be in the form of Jason Mathers.

Forcing this on her, Myrrha's 'normal façade' would begin to crack and it was exacerbated when, in the six months they were together, she discovered he was abusive and tied into sex trafficking, being used as 'the face' for the underhanded business of luring rich girls to sell across the sea. And on one fateful night when she was drugged and taken to the forest, the process of selling her would begin.

However, this was not to be because of her non-human biology, the drugs did not affect her and taking an opportunity, she would run and hide from him and his gang, finally using her non-human abilities to hunt down and steal the eyes, finally feeling something until she killed Jason last. With them all dead and their eyes harvested, Myrrha would mull over her life, realizing that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't really fit into the mold this world had of her. She only felt alive hurting humans and taking their eyes, and with that, she would decide to begin her life as a collector going under the name Eye Collector from now on.

Demeanor: The Eye Collector can be described as either very silent and irritable or cordial and nonchalant. She is generally a very stoic individual who enjoys reading and will make no move to really draw attention to herself. Generally, she appears very introverted and quiet.

 However, the Eye Collector's species goes into heat after their first intercourse. Due to this, once a month, there will be a week where she is actually very sporadic and acts drastically different, being much more talkative, impatient, irritable/aggressive, and just in general her behavior is completely unpredictable. Sometimes she may also make noises that are used to attract Males of her species and sometimes, she is most dangerous and reckless here as any victims are walking on thin ice with her during this time and she isn't hesitant to get physical with them if need be.

Traits: In general, Eye Collector is a very calm and quiet individual, she prefers to stay in the shadows and observe what's going on instead of directly handling it head on. While she is in general a very silent individual, she will actually communicate and talk with her victims before performing enucleation and depending on their response either mercilessly and sadistically take their eyes or sedate them and perform an enucleation as painless and intricately as possible. However, Eye Collector's kindness will only extend to this much; She still will discard her victims in isolated locations and abandon them, seeing them as commodities that have served their use. Not only that, but the Eye Collector is heavily fixated on completing her collection to a point she may obsessively go after a specific eye color because its needed for her quota. The Eye Collector can also be classified as a misanthrope and because of this, prefers to work alone as she sees other species, such as humans, below her or animals. All in all, she's a very independent and apathetic individual.

Extra Story Notes:

While the Eye Collector has been diagnosed with mental disorders, it should be emphasized that she is not human. She can see other planes of existence/dimensions, and the medication she takes only muddles her abilities but can't fix her.

The Eye Collector is almost always moving around and never in the same place. If seen twice in a location, it'd due to her finding another person she thinks she can take down quickly

The Eye Collector almost always wears layers- from gloves to even wiping down whatever she uses, she will never leave a trace of her around if she can help it. The Eye Collector's real last name is a Mystery; while many know her as a Wilson, no one except her kind knows her for her true surname.

The Eye Collector's species is able to camouflage into human society very easily. Because of this, while she isn't human, she can blend into human society quite easily with the most common look for her being her black hair and hazel or golden brown eyes.

This can be determined by the fact that when Eye Collector behaves more human or pretends to be human her body instinctually changes to suit this, whilst if she embraces her non-human aspects or mixes it, she can appear as a creature or a hybrid. It is not a deliberate choice.

However, it is sort of her physiology's way of protecting her since her body has a 'hunted' and 'hunter' mode.

As a non-human, the eye collector's body down to her fingerprints is entirely a mystery. Especially in taking account that the Eye Collector tries to never leave a trace, any trace of her more often than not leads to bizarre and confusing results 

The Eye Collector's blood is a dark blue and has an ink like texture to it. If ingested it, much like her organs and skin, is said to cause a slew of issues akin to overdosing on LSD and horrific visions that last for hours

Despite being drugged herself before, the Eye Collector has no qualms drugging her victims with the express intent of kidnapping them. However it's JUST kidnapping; the thought of anything else makes her severely uncomfortable so she will never put that on her victims unless during surgery they ask to be drugged for it (And that's only if they've been well behaved)

And on that note Myrrha will never target children and has a special hatred for slavers. She doesn't particularly like children, but her instincts sort of tell her they're non-threatening, and given her experience with Jason, she will brutalize and murder any traffickers without a second thought.

When it comes to her victims, the Eye Collector behaves differently depending on them. If they're calm and converse with her when she inquires, she is much more cordial and rational to them whilst if they're emotional, loud, or generally aggressive, she is much more aggressive and may indulge her more sadistic tastes instead. A well-behaved victim get's sedation, drugs, and their right eye. An ill mannered one does not.   

The Eye Collector will never kill her victims directly. She only wants their eyes and afterward has no problem letting them live despite what she put them through. Even if they really irritate her, she will never go out of her way to kill them directly by her hands unless it's a "Either you die or I die" situation or it's a "No loose ends" situation. A "no loose ends" situation is if they see her without her mask or she leaves SOME type of DNA on her victims.  

Though evidence points to the contrary, the Eye Collector will never take responsibility for her victims' death: No matter how she treated them or where she left them, she will always keep them alive until abandoning them and blame them for not being 'driven enough' to save themselves or get out of where she left them. Be it they died in the wilds or bled to death, she will always blame the victim for this. "Maybe living didn't matter to you as much as you kept saying."

The Eye Collector categorizes her eyes by color and places them in specific ornate boxes or jars so they are maintained. She usually has them locked away and only prefers human eyes above any other creatures.

The Eye Collector is very Xenophobic. Because of this, she has a very low opinion on humans and generally doesn't see them as her equal. In fact at most, she sees them like a pet animal and at the very least sees them as smelly vermin she needs to dispose of

The Eye Collector will never see a human the way she sees her people or see a human for their worth. A human could save her life.

They could prove they are stronger than her, but the Eye Collector will never see them as her equal or respect them.

However, the relationship between her parents and Madge is different and complicated; She is inclined to protect them and doesn't take kindly to people insulting them but she doesn't see them as her equal herself so it's quite complicated.

As well if a human managed to protect and save her people/Phoebe her feelings for that human will also become complicated because she is inclined to appreciate them or take this action into consideration but at the same time they're disgusting to her so it's the quickest way to confuse her because she has no idea what the thought process behind a human doing this is.

Extra Details/Fun Facts:

The Eye Collector actually was on the loose for 6 years, starting at 18, then allowing herself to be captured at 24, she vanished completely and returned like nothing happened.

When she mysteriously returns differently, she is often vague on the details of what happened, but her main answer is she was just "tired of it all." and that she's, in a sense, "retired" or "took a break". 

Due to this, there are times when the Eye Collector is off the radar completely vanishing, and other times, she returns as if she wasn't gone despite the fact that time changed or something

As well, though she is currently still about; She is not immortal. Eventually, when she retires, someone will take up her mantle and don the mask when the time has come. 

The Eye Collector is what you can call a "Neutral Party" or "Outside Party". Her loyalties are ONLY to her people, and she will do anything for their agendas before anyone/thing else. This may translate to her being seen as a proxy to her People's Leader, but the details are vague due to her people's presence being a rarity unless called upon.

As well, The Eye Collector doesn't see herself as a Proxy; She sees herself as the protector and ambassador of her people and serves to find others of her kind as they are the only group of people she is interested in caring for.

When unmasked and looking close enough, you can see Eye Collector's 'true pupils'. It's very faint and hard to see, but because of this, she will never make eye contact with people directly. She may stare into their eyes if they're not focusing on her, but she will never hold a stare if someone's focus is on her.

And on this note there are certain tells to figuring out you're speaking to a human looking Eye Collector

Firstly, the eyes; As said, her true pupils are at the center of the human pupil, so if looking close enough, you can see it.

Next, the feet: They will either be too small or too… Long. The Eye Collector's people's feet are made for light stepping and speed, so that would be a tell as well as them not wearing tight shoes.

  Next is the fingers; They will be unusually thin and slightly longer than a human's, even if her people are on the heavier side, they will be thinner than a human's and the palms will be slightly longer.

Next is the ears; They will be sort of weirdly shaped and it's distinct to the point hair has to cover it

Next is the back mark; Though the transformation to human seems seamless, the back mark will still show and be incredibly sensitive    

And lastly, it's the blood; While they look human in this form, the Eye Collector's peoples' bloods are various colors and though it'll come out crimson first the blood will slowly turn blue instead much like ink mixing. 

When it comes to the Eye Collector's missing eye it is highly dangerous; When pulled out, it sort of develops a mind of its own and if left to its own devices it will forcibly crawl into other peoples' eye sockets. Even if there's an eye, it will tear it out and force itself in.

However, because the Eye Collector is a different species, the eye will actually flash the victims' senses with so many visions, sensations, and shock the individuals' sense so intensely it'll cause a mass Hemorrhage in their brain killing the victim in the most brutal way possible before crawling around for another victim.

Because of this, the Eye Collector keeps it locked in a sack since it does not discriminate. It will kill anyone who tries to take it, and she's the only one who can handle it. On another note, whilst the eye has visible cracks it still can see and is quite perceptive; The cracks are there because when her people undergo heavy amounts of trauma it manifests as a crack on their glass panel eyes

The Eye Collector will never reveal why she has "4D" on her body. If prompted, it's the quickest way to get her irritated instead.

There are moments when the Eye Collector will stare off to the distance and cannot be shaken out of the trance

When this happens, it's mainly because she's seeing into another reality and not really invested in the happenings of where she is currently, so she's pretty much watching something else go on. She will only do this alone when she's trying to be calm, but it's why she won't react to things  like surprises at times.

Despite being sadistic, The Eye Collector actually loathes violent torture or bloodshed. She sees aggression or blood thirsty killers as dogs that need to be put down immediately. The Eye Collector's people can potentially go through their whole life, unable to feel emotions or lack the ability to reflect or think back on their actions.

They are creatures that are sure of themselves and always move forward. Because of this, while therapy showed her how to 'feel' about past actions (or at least fake it)

The Eye Collector doesn't regret her past and is very nonchalant about people questioning her actions. No matter which way you slice it, it should be noted that the Eye Collector sees her life as a killer as a CHOICE not something forced upon her; She sort of sees it as a career path not really traversed on often and one she doesn't mind because in her head it's the first choice she actually made for herself instead of what was expected of her.

Eye Collector enjoys cinnamon apple pie and mint tea. Those things keep her calm and she will often eat those in order to not give in to her animalistic habits 

And on that note, despite her people being fairly humane, the Eye Collector will sometimes engage in these animalistic behaviors such as licking her wounds, her ears twitching to sound, or instinctual breeding behavior during Heat.

Her people are also naturally observers; They will watch but quickly avoid anyone who approaches them, which the Eye Collector will do often if she's not want to talk to anyone. Much like deer, they will ditch a scenario unless they feel inclined to stay.

The Eye Collector's Bunny is named "Bun Bon" Since the Eye Collector's senses are very sensitive she may hold the bunny as a sort of calming or texture soothing when she feels nervous or particularly skittish 

The Eye Collector's Species is able to breed with any humanoid species and values genetics above all else. Due to this and given where she resides, the Eye Collector has incredibly particular tastes that almost are impossible to meet since most humans' color genetics are unattractive to her.

The Eye Collector is bisexual and as she's Xenophobic, it will only date Non Humans. She prefers females more than males but can go either way if they 'prove' they're worth her time. On this note, it is next to impossible to impregnate her and just like others of her kind she is attracted to primary colored people (People with red/blue/yellow eyes and hair) 

The Eye Collector is very much a "Commit to the Bitter End" type of person; What this means is if she has a score to settle, she will settle it and if something is worth her time, she will see it through no matter what.

Despite her antisocial nature, the Eye Collector has managed to form connections, but it's more often than not with only her people. 

The Eye Collector has a massive alcohol tolerance. Because of her people's body systems, she can down many drinks before even getting tipsy

While the Eye Collector doesn't like to talk about it, she's actually been in love and still yearns for a woman of her species, Phoebe.

They both liked each other since childhood, and while they tried to have a relationship when reunited, the Eye Collector left her because she realized A. Their relationship was based on idealized perceptions of each other that neither could ever live up to, and B. With everything that's wrong with her, especially in light of the fact Phoebe would have wanted to marry her also, she wasn't a good person to be with.

However, there are times Eye Collector will fondly speak of Phoebe or find herself wanting to go back to her, and in those moments, she is her most vulnerable and depressed due to still pining for her.

On that note, Phoebe is the only humanoid who truly owns the Eye Collector's hearts; When Phoebe is around, the Eye Collector is actually much kinder, obedient, and submissive to her than with anyone else. She could find someone else, she could take another to bed, but no one has the effect on her that Phoebe does.

Ohhh, "praying straight to good that maybe you'll come back around"??

This one is still ridiculously short (I have no one keeping me accountable for updates)!! The title comes from the song ‘A House in Nebraska’ by Ethel Cain and the story is very loosely based on an interpretation of the song - outside of canon Ethel Cain lore. Either way I would heavily recommend listening to the song (not even just for this extract I genuinely just think its a great song)

I started this ~ 2 months ago (when I got concert tickets for EC) and it follows CJ and her ex-girlfriend (to be named) who died. They met in high school (“And I found photographs of our school, on the day we met”). From what I’ve planned it’s set probably around season 1 or 2, but heavily focuses on flashbacks.

I don’t really have a plan for where it’s gonna go? I just write it when I have free time (which is not a lot right now).

Any reference to “her ex” will eventually be replaced with a name (I just don’t have one right now)!

CJ steadied her shaking hands on the sink. One breath in. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Breathe out. Her knuckles were a pale white; matching her face. She whispered the mantra which she had adopted over the past years as Press Secretary:

“It wasn’t her.”

One of the reporters shared an eerie resemblance to her ex. CJ knew it wasn’t her - but couldn’t escape the flashbacks that drowned her when she saw the reporter.

As her breathing slowed, and the nausea died down, CJ slowly stepped back from the sink. Taking a final deep breath, she prepared to face the world again. Sadly, her job wasn’t one where she could seek solace in the bathroom for longer than a few minutes.

As CJ returned to her office, she pulled out a ragged photograph from her desk. The photo of her ex. It was taken on their first day of their senior year.

Holy shit, you were not kidding. Aerith really did throw a fucking temper tantrum. She's horrified that her 8th birthday party has to be postponed, not even caring that Meguro just had a heart attack. Her birthday party wasn't even cancelled, it was merely postponed, and yet she's horrified about that instead of Meguro having a heart attack. She calls her 8th birthday a "special day" while everyone else is rightfully panicking that Meguro literally almost died. She holes herself up in her room "for long stretches of time" and cries over her birthday party getting postponed. She says that she was "overcome with anger at Meguro and his stupid heart attack" — what the actual fuck?! On her actual 8th birthday, she refuses to eat anything, not even Elmyra's breakfast, when she discovers that Elmyra had left to speak with Meguro. And finally, later that same day, on her actual 8th birthday, when some kids in Sector 5 tried to get her to come out and play with them, she fucking ignored them.

Meanwhile, in stark comparison, when Tifa was 8 years old, she lost her mother Thea to an illness and she literally almost died herself afterwards, ending up in a week-long coma and having no memory of her accident for 6 months afterwards (as confirmed by @/cloti_ct on Twitter). Oh and despite the entire village of Nibelheim blaming Cloud for her accident, Tifa herself never blamed him.

Aerith's enthusiasm about turning eight years old withered away, and as the adults rushed to and fro sorting out their grown-up concerns, she took to closing herself up in her room for long stretches of time, much of which was spent in tears. One moment, she'd find herself overcome with anger at Meguro and his stupid heart attack, and the next, she’d be paralyzed with guilt.

When the morning of her birthday did arrive, she went downstairs to find that Elmyra wasn't even at home. There was only a very plain breakfast on the table, along with a note explaining that her mother had left early to speak with Meguro.

Custom Toonami Block Week 152 Rundown

Spy X Family: After the foreshadowing last week we introduce Fiona properly and the r34 kinda spoiled this one for me because the joke is supposed to be that she wants in on the big operation and she’s seen as a glory hound but it’s really that she likes Loid and is pissy about not being picked to be his wife the one time he needs a fake marriage. I don’t know if I’d have figured it out before the punchline but it’s still pretty funny to watch Anya read her mind and hear here thoughts SCREAM about how much she loves him while she’s wearing a stoic face. She picks at Yor’s insecurities about her home ec skills and tries to not so subtly talk to Loid in code about how Yor isn’t a good fit for the mission despite everyone telling her him suddenly getting a new wife out of nowhere would be massively sus, like we just saw Fiona vent. Also Anya gets some really good moments of propping Yor up and affirming her love for her when she finds out Fiona wants to go Tiger Mom on her and I really wish Anya got more of this instead of ‘she’s bad at everything but it’s okay because she’s cute’ like it’s way more interesting to see her leverage her unique advantage from mind-reading in her own limited way than just kinda bungle through things. Still the episode does a good job of making Fiona’s feelings sympathetic without putting her in the right, like it’d be a problem if we thought she was a heartless witch or if she really was better than Yor for the mission but neither of those happen and she’s able to see Loid has genuine affection for his new family and for now is willing to step back a bit, though she decides on the new mission she has with Loid that she’ll try again. Also the whole ass end credits play before the B-plot kicks in so idk but it’s a cute little vignette about Bond ripping up Anya’s stuffed animal and them making up after a spat, it’s pretty cute and shit.

Inuyasha: More Kohaku action this time and he is forced to kill all the castle guards and steal The Baby back before Sango comes by and is like ‘shit, not again bro’ and he’s conscious for it the whole time and actively crying about it. Meanwhile Abi’s fighting Inuyasha still and is just like ‘oh shit guess it was a normal human castle, oh well god my blood, gonna peace out’. Kohaku suddenly remembers that Sango is his sister and that he killed his parents, getting over the memory block he’s had for half the series and getting past his grief by deciding to take his chance to try and kill Naraku to atone. Sango’s back to mulling over her options because even if she gets Kohaku back there’s no telling if Naraku will still be able to control him or if he’ll even want to live (spoiler, rn he doesn’t) so she decides agaian to try and kill him herself despite deciding that was a bad idea the past few times at the last second but she runs into some of the villagers Kohaku saved and takes solace in the fact there’s still some good in his heart. Both Inuyasha and Kagura’s group come to the same conclusion around the same time that the Baby is Naraku’s heart that was split from Hakudoshi. Miroku and Sango have a nice wholesome moment where he deliberately doesn’t undercut it with a fondling joke Naraku also dispels the barrier around Abi’s nest which Abi didn’t even know was there until her mom pointed it out but yeah now Inuyasha will be able to sniff her out and come get her but Kikyo sends her little cherubs out to warn him it’s probably a trap.

Yu Yu Hakusho: This one’s all about Hiei’s backstory, in a nutshell Hiei’s tribe are like the Gerudo and he’s the Ganondorf of the bunch except instead of making him king they murder him as a baby and slutshame his mom. Apparently Hiei’s just that badass that he was born with full consciousness like Ray from Promised Neverland and he grew up wanting to burn down his hometown which is hard because they’re a bunch of floating ice nomads but both Yukina and his mom’s friend Rui are on board for Plan Hiei Revenge Genocide Mk3 because throwing anyone with testicles off a cliff is not exactly a stable form of government. Hiei’s also looking for his birthright, the jewel of his mother’s tear from when he was born and now carries the same from Yukina, this is a lot of sidequests for Hiei in the last like ten episodes but we’ve got some character building to do I guess. Meanwhile Mukuro has set 500 A-class demons on Hiei and considering Hiei himself is supposed to be an A-class at this point I’m really starting to think the letters don’t mean a damn thing or every time they throw them around to sound important they really mean ‘bottom of this class so we can kinda sound tough’ like theoretically every demon on that list should be stronger than Toguro and somehow I’m not seeing ‘lizard guy with a mace’ as beating Toguro. Either way it’s been six months of Hiei carving his way through nominally strong guys and getting about as much sleep as I did in college and Mukuro’s like ‘okay for real this time just one more strong dude and we’re done and you can be in my inner circle’. Turns out it’s the doctor that gave Hiei the Jigan eye because that’s the only other thing we’ve fleshed out about him at this point and he needs to be haunted by all his demons at once damnit. Shizuka finds the bucket list and surprisingly Akira’s boss is willing to let her and Tencho go while gaslighting Akira into staying which is actually more decent than I thought he’d be like given he’s basically eyehumping Shizuka I thought for sure he’d be like ‘nah everyone stays’ given there’s no logic to his leadership anyway and if this was the Walking Dead this guy would have a broken bottle in his neck like a week ago. But yeah Shizuka gives Akira back the list and inspires him to be like ‘yeah thanks for everything but we’re going now and if that’s not good enough for you kindly fuck off, thanks.’ And of course as a climax the truck stop gets a zombie outbreak that Akira gets to sort out and save his boss’s life while demolishing any respect anyone had for his leadership ability and everyone gets to get the fuck out of dodge while Shizuka gets to give a good speech about enjoying the moment to show off her character development so that’s cool. I think her switch happened a little fast but I also kinda like that the way they pull her out of her mindset is by watching someone else make the same mistakes since you’re more likely to give someone else good advice than take it from yourself because psychology is a bitch.

Everyone’s kind of nervous but Bojji FUCKING OWNS Bosse!Daida, bro can’t even TOUCH Bojji as he’s Attack on Titaning around and busting up his weapon and disabling his body he doesn’t even land a fucking hit on Bojji bro, eventually Bosse has to admit defeat and tries to smash Miranjo but Bojji’s able to stop him so they can reflect on what has to be done properly. Apparently the only way to get Daida back is to kill Miranjo which I don’t really understand since the Dad Shake she had Daida drink didn’t really have any direct link to her but I guess it’s more dramatic. Also there’s a plot about the demon also having the key to fixing Ouken but we don’t get any more on that just yet. But yeah, Bojji promises to save Miranjo from the demon and breaks her mirror, sending her and Bosse’s souls free but her’s is dragged into the demon’s stomach to be tortured by the demon’s stomach demons for all eternity.

Vinland Saga: We find out that Leif’s been making as much money as he can to buy and liberate as many slaves as possible but given that slaves are really expensive and all you have to do to get one is capture some dude he’s not really making a dent. Meanwhile he’s in York while Canute is making his entrance for the big meeting he’s gonna have with King Daddy when he gets shot. But aha! Askeladd’s pulled a beginning of Attack of the Clones on everyone and instead of effeminate Canute it’s slightly more effeminate big titty female slave Canute that took the crossbow arrow. Meanwhile Thorfinn tracks down the assassin and murders him in front of Leif with all the chance meeting grace of a high schooler falling on a titty. He begs Thorfinn to come back and see his dying mother but Thorfinn’s just like ‘yeah how’s that fairy tale world you told me about doin’ huh?’ still Leif says he’ll stay in town if he reconsiders. Now we get the full extent of Askeladd’s plan which is like five layers of ‘but he knows what I know that he knows what I know that he knows’ and essentially they wrapped up the king in the Chains of Commanding and make sleighting Canute a bad look while making Canute seem important and feeding his spy info that will make him complacent and put up a false sense of security. Now for the final scene we have a pretty cool deal of Thorfinn getting his duel with Askeladd again but meanwhile Thorfinn still has a broken fucking arm, now I have two theories as to why Thorfinn’s pushing for the fight right now (aside from just wanting to get it done because he’s a revenge-driven murder monkey). 1. But either way Askeladd has some other shit to do first and Bjorn’s off his deathbad long enough to be killed by Askeladd’s hand, saying all he wanted was to be Askeladd’s friend even if it was a lie in the end. He did it not because he wanted to go to Valhalla because I’m pretty sure Valhalla still counts as long as you got the wound in battle even if you die days later, but because Askeladd was the ideal man to him and that’s how he wanted to die. Askeladd admits Bjorn was his only true friend, maybe sincerely, maybe just to put him at peace before he dies, but he puts his second in command to rest either way. Then he fucking turns to Thorfinn and basically goes ‘okay I got my adulting done, guess I have to deal with your petty childish bullshit now huh?’.

In this story there are three main characters who become connected through the world-famous Hotel Ritz after the Nazis occupied Paris in 1940. It is a multi-narrative story where readers can see events from several different views. Three women from different socio-economic backgrounds are thrust together. Vivian Miller, a glamorous American socialite widow is chosen by the SS officer Gunther Von Bauer to be his mistress. Both she and he are residing at the Ritz. She appears to be a Nazi sympathizer but is working behind the scenes to help French Jews escape.  Camille Lacroix, a chambermaid at the Ritz, becomes his household maid to support her family back home in Brittany, especially her sister Jacqueline who has emotional issues. Rachel Berman is Camille’s Jewish co-worker and needs her help to survive. Knowing that Vivian can help, Camille turns to her to help save Rachel and her mother. 

The plot is very powerful and moving.  There is suspense and tension as readers take the journeys with the characters.  Some of them are brave, resilient, courageous, while others are self-absorbed and cruel.  The twists and turns enhance this very captivating read.

Elise Cooper: Just as with the characters in this book many people, after October 7th, feel helpless, scared, and angry.  They can find solace in some of the characters’ quotes.  The first quote by the Jewish character, Rachel, “This enemy, these new Germans are hardened, angrier, and more ruthless. Hate lives in their heart.  Hate for people like us.”  Her father says, “We are French citizens.” Rachel responds “No papa. We are Jews.”

Renee Ryan: For me, that quote summed up the Holocaust with the evil of how people looked the other way and rationalized and pretended that nothing was happening. I thought when I wrote that quote about the 1940s, ‘what is wrong with these people. How are you missing this.’  Even though I am not Jewish I wondered why did so many just look away. Today it is happening all over again, where people just turn and look the other way. History is repeating itself.  People are saying it is a two-sided conversation and this is so untrue. It is a one-sided conversation. Everyone should be supporting our Jewish allies and our Jewish people in this country. We should not allow genocide to happen again. We should not be looking away.  It is about people who are our friends, colleagues, and I wonder why we are not standing next to them shoulder to shoulder.

EC:  Can you explain the other quote, people are “clinging to a lie and calling it hope.”?

RR:  I wanted to show in the book how people thought it will not happen to me.  It will only happen to those who are not French born, or it will only happen to the poor, not the wealthy, or it will only happen to people without connections, not us. The goalpost kept moving. Laws in France kept changing during the occupation. It was not the Germans, but the French that were doing the roundups of the Jews and passed the harsh laws towards them. 

EC:  Do you also agree that these quotes are very relevant today?

RR:  Yes.  I wrote this book a year ago. I thought I was writing these quotes about what happened fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty years ago during the Nazi reign. I cannot comprehend that these quotes can be applied to October 7th. It is so heartbreaking. Have we not learned anything. It is very similar to what happened. It is the same rhetoric, the exact same things said in the 1930s, 1940s.  It led to all the antisemitism and for people to look away. People do not want to educate themselves. They only listen to the propaganda about the Jews. I have a quote in the book, “Good people should stop looking the other way and stand up to evil.”  People should stand up with Israel.  Nothing can be justified.

EC:  Where did you get the idea for this story?

RR: There was a news article about Irene Gut.  She had a tragic life. She became a housekeeper for a Nazi official in Poland.  She hid nine Jews in his basement, and they all survived two years of hiding. This was the jumping off point. What would it be like for someone working in a home and hiding Jews right under the nose of someone trying to wipe them out. 

EC: How would you describe Camille?

RR:  Trustworthy, loyal, decent, guilty, and courageous.  She was relieved to be in Paris away from the stress of her family. She felt guilty of being relieved that she was not guilty. She struggled with it. She was conflicted and eventually decided to take a stand.

EC:  What was the role of Jacqueline, Camille’s sister?

RR: She represented the mentally ill. There is a scene in the book where Camille discovers the German euthanasia program with the mentally ill. It was refined and then applied to the Jews.  The sister represented that part of the German history.

EC:  How would you describe the Jewish character, Rachel?

RR:  Innocent, helpless, sweet, not a complainer, has a sense of powerlessness because she is scared and bitter. She also feels humiliated, angry, and is being persecuted. Her anger is her saving grace because without it she would not have survived.  The anger is what drove her. While she was fearful and felt helpless, she was also very angry that had her trying to figure out how to escape.

EC:  Was Vivian a complex character?

RR: She is responsible, direct, lonely, and at an earlier age suffered mental and physical abuse. She was also confident and passionate yet could be very selfish and self-centered. In some ways she was the villain yet at the same time she was an anti-hero.  I would not call her a hero. She represents those people today who say if I do a little bit then I am still good. She justifies rotten behavior by a few good acts. She wanted to believe ‘if I do a few good things that erases all the bad.’  Although deep down she knows that is not true.  She also makes a really bad decision.  

EC: How would describe Nazi SS officer Von Bauer?

RR: He is controlling, an opportunist, ambitious, driven, and possessive.  Regarding Vivian he is obsessed with her, likes to steal her dignity, cruel, and demanding.  He represents the abusers of woman. He was to Vivian the ‘devil you know.’ At times she saw in him comfort and familiarity. He was bad because he was a Nazi.

EC:  Why did Vivian get the nickname The Snow Queen versus Von Bauer’s the Raven?

RR:  It comes from the Nordic folklore fairy tale.  They were always in battle.  I think it was a perfect metaphor for their relationship.  They were going to battle until one survived.  Both characters in the fairy tale are evil. Their relationship was based on a tug of war, like a weird chess game. 

EC:  Did the American government really freeze accounts of Americans overseas?

RR:  Yes. Laura Mae Corrigan was a real person they did it to.  It was very much justified. She was very much a Vivian type character, an ex-Patriot living in the Ritz. She left the Ritz because they took her money.  But Vivian stayed at the Ritz because she had a plan.  The Ritz was not shut down because they remained neutral. 

EC:  Was there an interconnection between the relationship of Vivian, Rachel, and Camille?

RR: The Ritz brought them together as three people trying to survive the war.  They are not really friends.  Rachel and Camille are more friendly. They need each other. Camille and Rachel see their families as number one, while Vivian has no family. Vivian is number one to herself. They help each other but always will consider their family first.

EC:  Next book?

RR: It is titled The Last Fashion House in Paris and will be out this time next year. The setting is occupied Paris.  The character from my first book, The Widows of Champagne, Paulette, has her story on what happened to her during the banishment to Paris, the final two years of WWII.  She must redeem herself.

100% agree. Before TSC (and the EC) I kinda thought Jean’s role in the Ravens was kinda like Kevin’s but without all the public glory and Riko’s fucked up exy brotherhood shit. Constantly abused by the Moriyamas but at least some solace in Exy and the team. I even thought he could have had a relationship with another raven like Kevin and Thea’s 🥲

But noooooooo Those 5 years were straight up horror for Jean! He was terrorized non stop day after day and night after night. SA, waterboarded, the box, the 500+ stitches, all those broken fingers, thrown down the stairs, head bashed open on the concrete and idk what else.

I think the most fucked up revelation of all though in TSC is that on top of the Moriyama’s abuse, all the other Ravens fucking hated him! Made fun of him and slut shamed him.

Ok all of AFTG is fucked up. But the sunshine court is the MOST fucked up. I fear the first three OG books combined do not have as much trauma and messed up shit in it that the sunshine court has in ONE BOOK. Poor Jean might just be the most traumatized😭 so much shit went down in that single book I had to put it down on multiple occasions. I’m sacred for the next book. If that’s what we learned from one book I’m am quite frankly shaking in my boots for the next one. Oral of the story the sunshine court is the most utterly messed up jaw dropping fucked up thing I’ve read😭

Hey I saw a thing about how the military uses fatalistic (or whatever the word is) humor. Does the EC do that too?

Hi! Sorry for the late answer and I had to look up the word.

As for if Scouts and Captains make fatalistic jokes, I would say perhaps. They would mostly be in a dark humor kind of way, like “we’re going to die at some point on a mission.” Something like that for those who’ve been around long enough.

Though I would doubt fatalistic jokes would work as heavily as Belos always “preaches” the Will of the Titan. If anything they wouldn’t find solace in making those jokes.

Belos: If the Titan’s will is that you will die, then you will die. You cannot argue with the Will of the Titan.

Coven Scouts: Yes, Emperor Belos.

I mostly think that their humor goes in the opposite of fatalistic as they are able to live past the event and live to fight another day. Some Captains joke in this as they find it amusing.

It isn’t until after those who leave the Emperor’s Coven along with Steve, do they realize that they can change destiny. Lilith choose against it, Steve pondered against it, so what is stopping them? They have to process what they’ve done of course as that is never easy and to make it up to the peers of the Boiling Isle.
