Recent data shows that the global wine market closely tracks changes in interest rates, with investors responding quickly and without delay. This suggests a heightened sensitivity to economic conditions in the past four years. With central banks expected to lower interest rates soon, we anticipate that any rate cuts could boost returns in the wine market. We’ve already seen signs of this positive trend, both globally and in our recent auction results, particularly with multi-bottle lots..

  In August, we hosted a Live Auction followed by its Buy Now auction and then a special single vendor auction Cellar of a Surgeon. Here below are some highlights from our August auctions.

  Bordeaux once again led the show. 2008 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Classe sold for $963.50, 1996 Chateau Haut Brion 1er Cru Classe followed at $940, and 1998 Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classe sold for $470, both 2010 Chateau Pontet-Canet 5eme Cru Classe and 2010 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe sold for $376 while 2008 Vieux Chateau Certan reached $352.50.

  Italy, another star region with steady rewarding ROI(return on investment). We had both 2019 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia and 2019 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia sold for $411.25, and 2017 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT reached $235. Many of our Italian collection came in multi-bottle lots, 4-bottle-lot of 2016 Conterno Fantino Sori Ginestra scored $658, and 3-bottle-lot of 2015 Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena sold for $528.75.

  An icon from Spain, 2012 Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva sold for $587.50 and 2016 Vega Sicilia Tinto Valbuena 5 magnum followed at $517.

  From Antipodes, 2004 Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna sold for $705, while 2002 Penfolds Bin 707 sold for $329. 2015 Te Mata Estate Coleraine Scored $246.75, 2013 Te Mata Estate Coleraine magnum reached $364.25, while 2011 Craggy Range Sophia magnum sold for $235. Both 2013 Villa Maria Ngakirikiri and 2014 Esk Valley The Terraces sold for $141.

  Some other bubbly highlights include,  2012 Dom Perignon Vintage Brut scored $399.50, 2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveaux 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes reached $376 while 2010 Domaine Francois Lamarche Echezeaux Grand Cru sold for $352.50, 2022 Kweichow Moutai Baijiu scored $423, great buys!

Địa hình vùng trồng nho ở Vosne Romanee Wine

Các vườn nho có xu hướng mở rộng ra theo mọi hướng, có độ cao từ 235 đến 350 mét so với mực nước biển. Những công nhân ở đây chọn những sườn dốc có nhiều ánh sáng mặt trời nhất cho những cây nho của họ.

Gần về phía đáy, phần đất của các con dốc này càng mỏng và không thể tăng thêm bất kì sự hữu ích nào cho cây nho. Trên phía cao hơn, đất dày lên và có khí hậu lạnh có nhiều khả năng cản trở độ chín của nho. Vùng chính giữa của con dốc được coi như phù hợp nhất cho những cây nho ngon nhất.

Các loại đất sét, đất đá vôi mỏng thoát nước tốt và phía trên cùng là lớp đá cuội, tất cả những loại đất đó có mặt trên những vườn nho của Vosne Romanee Wine.

6 vườn nho Grand Cru Vosne Romanee Wine Vùng diện tích trồng nho rộng khoảng 27 héc ta, nơi này được chia thành 6 khu vực nhỏ hơn và riêng biệt như: La Grand Rue, La Tache, Richebourg, La Romanee, Romanee Saint Vivant và nổi bật nhất là Romanee Conti. Tuy diện tích nơi đây khá nhỏ nhưng rượu vang cấp độ Grand Cru nơi này lại được đánh giá cao và giá thành tương đối đắt.

Ngoài 6 vườn nho Grand Cru này, Vosne Romanee Wine còn có 15 vườn nho Premier Cru ở cả 2 xã Vosne Romanee và Flagey Echezeaux. Giống nho Pinot Noir là giống nho chính trong hầu hết tất cả các vườn nho Grand Cru và Premier Cru.

Louis Jadot Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 2005

Louis Jadot Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is a red Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits. The Vosne Romanée region is situated just to the north of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The two greatest vineyards of Vosne and Flagey-Echezeaux, are entitled to use the Vosne-Romanée appellation. The Vosne Romanée appellation covers a 105 ha surface, 13 ha at Flagey Echezeaux.

Louis Jadot is one of the largest and most famous wine producers and negociants in the Burgundy wine-growing region. The origins of the company date back to 1859 when the business was fouded by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. Over time the company has acquired plots of vines is some of the most prestigious vineyards in the region including Beaune Clos des Ursules, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and many more. Louis Jadot owns or directly controls 120 ha in the Côte d’Or, including over 90 individual vineyard sites, 84ha in the Beaujolais Crus and 18ha in the Mâconnais primarily in Pouilly Fuissé (they own the fantastic Domaine Ferret). Today the business is headed by Pierre-Henry Gagey, son of André Gagey, who was entrusted with the management of Louis Jadot in 1962 by Madame Jadot following the tragic death of her son.

The Pinot Noir grapes for the Louis Jadot Vosne Romanée 1er Cru “Les Suchots” come from two continuous parcels between Romanée St Vivant and Richebourg on the South side, and “Les Echezeaux” on the North side. The grapes are hand harvested into small wooden crates to ensure that they arrive at the winery in best condition. The grapes are hand sorted and destemmed. The wine is fermented in open top wooden vats and/or stainless steel vats for 3-4 weeks with a twice daily “pigeage”, or punching down of the cap. The wine ithen aged or 18 months in wooden barrels (one third new) from Jadot’s own cooperage.

Wines from Domaines Albert Bichot with Delphine de la Fouchardière

Where: Alt Hotel East Village Calgary

At the invite of our new friend, Tara Zenon from Delf Wines, we braved the frigid cold to taste through 15 wines from Domaines Albert Bichot with export director Delphine de la Fouchardière.  The house of Bichot have been in the wine business since 1831 and as a negotiant and grower, have gone through a quality revolution starting in the early 1990′s.  The company’s vineyards now total 6 estates that cover Burgundy from north to south and we had a chance to taste through a selection of these wines from the 2015 to 2017 vintages.  

To preface, it is important to note the friendly and informative approach of Ms. de la Fourchardière. Managing pouring and providing information to an audience of wine professionals is a challenge but she was up to the task. With a smile and quick wit, she’d showcase vineyard locations and provide harvest details and perspectives helping make sense of this complex array of wines. 

Starting in Chablis, we assessed the 2017 Chablis Village and the 2015 Grand Cru Les Vaudésirs from Domaine Long~Depaquit. Both wines showcased beautiful purity of fruit and terroir where notes of lemon, slate with the grand cru granted added complexity with secondary notes of straw, white tea and flowers.  The warmth and ripeness of the 2015 vintage is on display here, no doubt. Expect pricing to be in the $41 retail range for the regular Chablis and about $110 for the Grand Cru.  

Moving to the southeast in Burgundy about 100km, we arrived at vineyards  for some expressions of Chardonnay.  With all wines from the 2016 vintage, we started with the Bourgogne Hautes - Côtes de Nuits ($36), that showed a nice level of drink-ability with a round ripeness carried by lemony citrus and a clean, acid kissed finish. The Clos De Mouches Beaune 1er Cru ($160) was wound up tight still but the foundation for this wine from the Vineyard of the Bees is sound.  Lemon, grapefruit with solid core of mineral tinged acid make this hard to resist now. Cellaring to 2025 is highly recommended.  We rounded out the whites with Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru ($255) and this is everything you’d expect and more from fruit sourced from these pedigreed vines. Beautiful aromatics of white flowers, butterscotch and lemon carried the same elegant characters on the palate that included notes of hazelnut. The finish is long, evolving with time in the cellar only enhancing the total experience. 

From the Grand and Premier Cru vineyards where Chardonnay shines, we moved to the Còte de Nuits with a comparison of vintage and vineyard leading with the 2015 Gevrey - Chambertin Les Evocelles ($110). This village wine showcased a beautiful perfume and palate with notes of red currant, earth framed by sandalwood and a roundness in the mouth accentuated by the vintages hot, dry summer.  We moved to the 1er cru naughty neighbor vineyard of Romanee-Conti in the 2016 Vosne - Romanee Les Malconsorts ($255).  2016 had a tall order in following the almost perfect conditions of 2015 but this vintage of Les Malconsort has fine floral notes alongside layers of dark cherry. The pedigree of the terroir shines here and likely this is the closest that most will get to the storied wines of Romanee Conti. Certainly not inexpensive but not out of the realm of splurge / cellar worthy should the occasion call. The tasting finished with a duo of Grand Cru expressions from the great 2015 vintage and while these were wound up tight, it is easy to see what investing in these will bring: massive enjoyment. In terms of early accessibility, the Echezeaux Grand Cru ($327) led as a monolith of red and black berry with notes of licorice, spice, cola and a finish that soared for minutes. The Clos de La Roche Grand Cru ($375) was more stately and quiet than its Echezeaux kin with red berry fruit, oak notes and light spice carrying the experience. This one is built for the long haul and should be revisited in 2025 and beyond. Last but not least was the 2016 Charmes - Chambertin Grand Cru ($312) whose palate and aroma were eclipsed by the Echezeaux only by virtue of the Charmes being slightly more closed down. The structure, fruit and terroir were all present and if the opportunity presents to reassess this alongside the other great Grand Cru wines from 2015 say in 10 years, I would imagine a different outcome.  

Overall, this was an outstanding introduction to the wines of Albert Bichot and I am excited to see these wines in restaurants and fine wine markets across Alberta.  Thanks to Tara, Delphine from Albert Bichot and the staff from the venue Alt Hotel for the amazing tasting.

  We had a strong lineup of First Growth Bordeaux in this auction and quite few big lots with 12-bottle lot of 2003 Chateau Rothschild selling for $14100, followed by 12-bottle lot of 1995 Chateau Mouton Rothschild at $9165. 2008 Chateau Mouton Rothschild reached $963.5, while 2005 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion sold for $893, both 1994 Chateau Latour and 2005 Chateau Angelus sold for $846. 2003 Chateau Pavie scored $564, 2005 Chateau L’Evangile reached $470 while 2009 Chateau Pontet-Canet sold for $423; 2009 Chateau Lynch Bages sold for $305.5, from the same vintage, 2009 Chateau Haut-Bailly closely followed at $293.75.

Few other highlights of Bordeaux blends from home, 2013 Destiny Bay Magna Praemia scored $376 while its vintage 2010 Mystae sold for $258.5; both 1986 The Antipodean magnum and 2013 Church Road Tom sold for $235, while 2009 Church Road Tom sold for $188. 2010 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose sold for $211.5, and 2010 Puriri Hills Pope followed at $176.25.

Legendary “Lala’s” led the charge for Rhone, with 2003 E. Guigal La Mouline scoring $1010.5 followed by 2003 E. Guigal La Landonne at $987 and 2003 E. Guigal La Turque sold for $893. Syrah/Shiraz from the globe did equally well, 2008 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 reached $822.5, 2002 Clarendon Hills Astralis scored $470 and 1998 Jim Barry Armagh sold for $352.5; both 2008 and 2009 Craggy Range Le Sol reached $164.5, 2018 Te Mata Estate Bullnose Syrah sold for $94.

Burgundy and Pinots have been delivering very solid performance in past two years. 2001 Domaine Jean GrivotVosne Romanee Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru sold for $446.5, 2007 Domaine Anne Gros Echezeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru sold for $411.25, 2005 Domaine Robert Chevillon NuitsSt Georges Les St Georges 1er Cr sold for $376 while 2020 Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres 1er Cru reached $352.5.

Italy’s been showing the fastest growth among Country of Origins in past three years, making it one of the best regions to buy in for better return on investment. 2005 Masseto Tenuta dell’Ornellaia took the highest hammer win in this region at $1175, 2008 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia sold for $481.75 while 2006 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello sold for$293.75.

Some other highlights worth mentioning are, 1989 Chateau d’Yquem sold for $893; 1995 Dom Perignon Vintage Brut sold for $481.75 while 1983 Bollinger La Grande Annee Vintage Brut scored $376; 2021 Egon Muller ScharzhofbergerRiesling Spatlese sold for $411.25, and 2017 Felton Road Block 6 Chardonnay scored $152.75.

2013 Domaine Gerard Julien & Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru

OH YOU FANCY, HUH. This is a grand cru Echezeaux (prime Burgundy real estate for those in the know), y’alls. Very floral and perfumed on the nose with a bouquet of red flowers combined with an aroma of blackberries and enoki mushrooms. Tart cherries on the palate with lingonberries and even a whiff of charcuterie. Still very perfumed with a lingering finish. It’ll lighten your wallet, but you know what? You found an Echezeaux. You shouldn’t give a fox (hehe) about the price.
