In the 1980s, Northern Canada had many pockets of Stationary stores that seemed like thriving eco-systems with young journalers, crafters, writers and calligraphers. There was plenty of scratch pads, smelly markers, typewriters, and recipe cards.
Once in Northern parts of Ontario, one could see enthusiastic letter writers seeking companionship with calligraphers and dactylographes (French typewriter enthusiasts.)
These pockets of retail in rural Canada were visited by different types of creators and consumers especially in late August and early September when the youngest members of their packs would need erasable pens, Laurentien pencil crayons in clear foldable containers, 64 crayons stacked elegantly in a box with a sharpener that will not sharpen, elaborate 3 ring binders with velcro front closures that did not fit in their backpacks without a lot of shouting and dancing and possibly a new combination lock for their locker.
These havens of stationary were teeming with teenage calligraphers who would write their names all over the white notepads, on the side of the pen wall and doodle further down the aisle. Some would become graffiti artists or scribblers - sometimes in a book, sometimes in journal and sometimes in newspapers. There were file folders and an aisle with grey file cabinets with Accountants, teachers and organizers grazing nearby. There were maps, stickers and giant corkboards that were consumed by teen fauna that would create spaces that were inviting to their pack. During this time, smelly, puffy, squishy and holographic stickers seem to attract young fauna to these spaces with older pack members hesitantly appearing to purchase single blue bic pens.
We've all heard about the slow destruction of the Stationary Store habitat. First, there was the early 90s migration to bigger retail stores or Office Supply stores. Then the typewriters became obsolete in the mid-90s. Dactylographes were harder to find. There were less and less in the stores. Many become gamers, coders and programmers migrating to more active and more electrical pastures.
The stationary store in Northern Canada started to disappear. There were less sighting of calligraphers signing their names on little note pads. There were less aisles of individual markers and pens for writers, creators, journalers, crafters and artists to test and enjoy. Typewriters stop being sold in-store. Many types of mega-fauna migrate to larger shopping spaces. Some to malls in larger communities or in more diverse ecosysystems like the office supply store or a giant big box retailer with both stationary as well as other essentials for creative fauna to exist happily.
The mass migration of fauna away from these tiny ecospaces coincided with their eventual disappearance in the North. While there are still spaces where Dads, Crafters, Lesbians, Lumberjacks, Goths, Journalers and more coexist (sometimes in harmony and sometimes with great unrest) the tiny retail space in the North that had aisles of individual pens, markers and highlighters in cups and bins no longer exists.
While there are migration patterns that suggest many of the fauna have travelled to online pen retailers or drove their trucks to big box stores, sightings of these eco-spaces that nurtured many fauna from youth to become the creators they will be one day are rare in the North. When I see Dads in Southern Ontario craft stores confidently helping the Lesbians in the fiber craft aisle or spot a lumberjack watching from their perch on the top shelf in between a 1000 piece puzzles and the overstock origami paper, I wish we still had tiny but might Northern Canadian stationary stores to hang out in.
