Seven Books In Seven Days: Traitor of Redwinter by Ed Mcdonald
Tumblr media
tagged by e-b-reads to post the cover of a book you love and tag someone else to do the same every day for a week!
I haven't actually read this one yet, since it doesn't come out until later this year. But I was so struck by this cover when I saw the reveal on tordotcom that I had to immediately check out book 1 from the library. highly effective cover action, very cool art. (as per google the artist is Galen Dara. You can see the rest of her portfolio here)

Finished: Daughter Of Redwinter by Ed McDonald.
This is an epic fantasy with an intricate, well defined magic system and history and you get to jump straight in. I got frustrated with the main character often (because I got way too involved and disagreed with their decisions) but the story itself is compelling and pulls no punches. I couldn't put it down. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Book Review: Blackwing by Ed McDonald
Blackwing by Ed McDonald is a story set in a wasteland, where war has been waged for lifetimes between magical beings who live longer than can be imagined. Humans are their pawns, used and discarded in a long-game plan, known only to them.   The Cover: I love this cover and it’ simplicity. The version I have has the image of a black raven on a greyish-white background. The title is in big, bold…

A Gentleman and a Scholar's Short List of Books I Hope To Read Before Year's End
Hullo, hi, Filip here. I take this valuable reading time to notify you that I have a few too many books I’d like to read before the year comes to an end, and I’m, frankly, drowning under the sheer weight of paper stock. Prepare yourselves! Starling House by Alix E. Harrow The new Harrow novel is ace, and I’ll probably burn through it over the rest of the night because I am a maniac who cannot…

Life is as always very busy, and what’s the best thing to do when you’re busy? Add in something new to work on. With that in mind, I decided to change things up from my normal routine and conduct an interview with an author whose work I admire. This will be the first interview I’ve done on my blog, and I’m happy with how it turned out. For the first interview, I reached out to author Ed McDonald…

December Book Reviews: Daughter of Redwinter by Ed Mcdonald
Tumblr media
I have to admit I picked this one up due to a post by @torbooks (it was just the cover. Look, I'm very easily swayed by pretty covers.) Raine has the gift of seeing the dead-- which is unfortunate, because in her culture, anyone suspected of necromancy is sentenced to death. When her entire traveling band is slaughtered in an incident involving a dead warrior ghost, a cursed page, and a rival lord, Raine is taken in by warrior monks. Raine is eager to learn the powers that they hold-- and finally find a place after a life of wandering and rejection-- but she must hide her secret talent or die.
Overall, this was a surprisingly good book. Raine's choices aren't always good, but they make sense for the immensely traumatized person she is. I'm not sure I entirely buy some of the political ethics of the book-- the monks of Redwinter have a "for the greater good" ethic that seems to encompass a wide array of atrocities and grant them enormous privileges. I'm not sure I buy the way this is sometimes excused by the narrative, but this is filtered through Raine's perspective, and she's desperate for acceptance. I was also pleasantly surprised by a minor sapphic plotline (Raine is bi).
I'll definitely keep an eye out for book 2, which is due to be published sometime this year. An interesting and worthwhile fantasy read.

The Daughter of Redwinter Review - Teens, Trust, and Trances
The Daughter of Redwinter Review - Teens, Trust, and Trances
Tumblr media
A teenager discovers they have magic abilities and joins a group with the same abilities hoping to learn from them. Sound familiar? Yet, The Daughter of Redwinter by Ed McDonald is anything but that simple. It is a story with those elements, but so is it a tale of the class divide, finding a place …
