How is it that Hiro Mashima’s female characters are well written despite being the poster children for the male gaze?

I recently found this video critique MHA's female cast: “Is My Hero Academia Sexist?”

Now Fairy Tail's babes are unapologetically bodacious and horny as hell but rarely are they ever sidelined. Even Erza when Natsu tapped in to fight Jellal was ultimately the one to end the Tower of Heaven arc with her might've-been sacrifice. The Phantom Lord arc only ends because Lucy went to have words with her father. Wendy channels the Dragon Slayers' powers into Natsu, something he couldn't do alone.

Hell, there's never just one fight for them and then it's all testoterone driving the main fights. Even Lucy's the one to save everyone when Tartaros traps everyone in the Alegria, overtaxing herself with a triple summoning along with giving the Celestial Spirit King a chance to get in on the action.

It's bizarre how so many clown on Fairy Tail for "doing Shonen wrong" yet the one thing so many other titles drop the ball on is where Fairy Tail shines through the smut. When this is where the bar is set, what excuse is there?

Hiro Mashima's Farmagia Character Trailer Quick Thoughts

Farmagia brought to you by Hiro Mashima as the lead character designer with Marvelous is a little over a few weeks away from dropping on PS5 and Nintendo Switch on November 1 2024. Recently, we have been given a short character trailer that captures what the main protagonist Ten and the main heroine Arche along with their best friends Leii and Chica sound like complimented by brief gameplay footage. So I wanted to give my quick thoughts on the trailer and sharing my excitement for this upcoming game!

Probably not what you were expecting, huh? Speaking as Luna, I think a little self-indulgence never hurt anyone, and with this CharacTourney here, I'm going all the way! I've played and watched a lot of things over my 22 years on this planet, and I've gotten to know many characters, some of whom would shape my identity, some of whom radiate the energy I strive for, and some of whom I just plain like a lot. All of these characters come together to form one principle idea: the essence of Lunacore!

While the characters on display are objectively all over the place, know that they all have a place in my heart and soul. And if they have a place in yours too, may your votes carry them to victory!

I can’t help but feel like the final Edens Zero chapter was a slap in the face to Shicca fans. Like, the relationship exists solely to drive Pino’s revival and isn’t about Shiki or Rebecca at all. It reminds me of all the NaLu fanservice over the years, very little of which I’ve felt furthers NaLu as a romance. But then again, I’m probably not the guy to listen to, because I’ve always felt that for NaLu to happen, NaLi needs to happen first. Lucy needs that kick in the pants that Natsu is indeed interested in romance, and I dunno what other trigger is needed than him getting with Lisanna. He just saw their Edolas selves with a daughter, and barely an arc later, Lucy’s NOT the only snow doll Hakune’s spell creates?!? Yeah, that romance ain’t happenin’ without a MAJOR kick in the proverbial nads to Lucy.

I truly think NaLu will probably get Shicca'd (like just throw a baby at them) but with no meaningful development in the last 100+ chapters so using Lisanna wouldn't be enough. (Also i feel Lisanna needs to do more than a background ship tease). Lucy and Natsu simply need a conversation. A unision raid is my wish, they can't sync their power cause they aren't on the same page. Just something beautiful and symbolic of them being united on what their relationship is. Platonic or not.

Princess and Prince (100 quest spoilers, I believe)

The Princess and Prince of Edolas.

Princess Irene De Edolas is the only daughter of Mystogan and Erza Knightwalker. She is also Irene Belserion (Is that her surname?) but is living in her new life. While young, Irene is enjoying her new life but can remember everything from her previous life. She is happy to finally have a relationship with her daughter.... but it's her daughter's counterpart. Now she lives in a world where her daughter is now her mother and she lives in a paraell world.

Prince James De Edolas is the youngest son of Mystogan and Erza Knightwalker. He is inspired from Justice from Eden Zero. He is going to be a future Knight Captain in the Royal Army. As the youngest child, he is not trained to be the next ruler, Kaito and Irene are.

This is eight years into the past compared to the actual date of the next generation in my universe.

Erza Scarlet and Elsie Crimson

A warning as always: This is going to mention scenes from chapters of the Edens Zero Manga as well as 100 Year Quest. If you are not caught up or have not read these, I highly recommend you do before continuing this post.

Erza Scarlet and Elsie Crimson have always been rather, vague in my heart. I don't mean like forgettable by any means. We all know how memorable Erza's scenes especially are. However, them as characters never quite sat right with me.

I know I'm about to piss off a lot of Erza fans... but I gotta say I don't like her. I mean I do, but she isn't even in my top five. I do have many moments that I enjoy of her and she is one of the funniest characters. I feel like her character has just been downgraded into something of comedic relief or destroy the enemy after some to little trouble. Especially in 100 Year Quest she doesn't have the feeling of the original Erza, though in many cases it is like that for all the characters.

There are moments I do enjoy of Erza. Her moments of seriousness when she takes the lead in team Natsu in plans are great, even when they go awry. Her fight against Minerva and Kagura is one of my favorites and can we just say how amazing Tower of Heaven and her backstory was when it was first presented. I feel though that many of these moments have been stripped away and given us nothing but moments of absolutely bodying an opponent for the sake of "badassery". I will die on the hill that Erza's battle with Irene was absolutely amazing until Wendy was no longer involved.

Then there is Elsie Crimson, oh boy. When she first came out I remember how crazy the fanbase went. Sure we had Plue return from Rave Master and Jellal had a similar person in Rave Master, but something felt... different. In the anime their voice actresses were the same. Their power was almost identical and... it was Erza. I passed Plue for just being a mascot and the same for Happy. But Elsie will always be.... Erza to me.

That isn't to say that there aren't good moments of Elsie. Her moments reminicing with Shiki about when she was taken in by Ziggy hurt my soul and her and Justice had great potential. But that was all it was, potential.

Erza and Jellal are still great in my opinion. Their dynamic is cute and embrace the friends to enemies to lovers that can't really be together. In a way I see it as Erza having honor to hold onto while Jellal has his own honor to find.

Elsie and Justice... I like them... but I can't help but to feel I like them because they are just... Erza and Jellal switched. They have a different backstory of course but its the same structure. To me it seemed like Mashima just used our heart strings tethered to Erza and Jellal to carry Elsie and Justice. Not to mention, while I enjoy Jellal as a character in his many moments, Justice is not a good character. But thats a discussion for another day. I will rant about him eventually. I feel like pieces of their characters work so well as they are, if only the other didn't exist. Elsie works to me because without Justice her scenes (other than that one allowing Ziggy to live) work so well for her. Her character being an unstoppable force high ranking in society that even Valkiyrie struggles against works because she isn't a main character. She doesn't swoop in to save their day unless Justice is involved or Ziggy. We couldn't pray for her return to defeat Drakken or Shura because...it was never going to happen. That is who Elsie is. So the moments where she one shots someone we know are deserved. The fights we see she struggles in we know that person is a force to be reckoned with.

Meanwhile, Erza works because she is like the big sister character, especially in the eyes of Wendy, Natsu, and Gray. She is there when you need to count on her. The reason her fights tire us out or seem unreasonable are because we see her as a main character. She just has main character syndrome attached to her.

If you could take Erza's relationships with people and her good bond with Jellal. It could be the story of Elsie and Justice or her original story and mesh it together with Elsie's perk of being a side character hardly seen I feel it could work wonderfully.

But I'm curious about what you all think about Erza and Elsie. If either got into a duel who would win? My bet is on Erza because the main character syndrome.

The idea that a god-like character with (supposedly) unlimited powers should snap their fingers at the end of a TV series and remove all pain and terrible things in the world so humans no longer had any suffering is the most BAFFLING thing I have ever heard.
