I don't know whether it says something more about me or about the potential within Osmosians that they are the only species I work with in any capacity that I do not have a set '100% this' for the sexes situation. Are they a case of '100% damming individuals'? Are they a case of 'serial dichogamous species divided into anything from 2 to 5 sexes depending on how you class shit'? It depends on the story, it depends on the version I'm working with, it depends on my mood. There's my 'official version' but even then I am never completely happy with anything I do there.
Like aside from 'fuckers don't work like humans' nothing is ever entirely set in stone within everything on this front.
Just, the sort of thing you occasionally walk around kicking the tires about.
#edited to remove a term it turns out science is attempting to move away from and replace with a better one#not the one suggested purely because it seemed to be describing a specific form of being that doesn't quite apply here#and so i'm co-opting and modifying a term from botany that fits better

A Dark Game
Prince Prompto and Assassin Prince Noctis
Prompto Week Day 4 (10/22): Alternate Universe
Mildly went overboard on today’s prompt. Kind of has a plot, but is also kind of wordy. Just to let you know. Didn’t have time to edit this one as much as I wanted, but I didn’t want to fall behind on days. I cut it really close though. Warning the POV kind of alternates.
Summary: Prompto is the Prince of Niflheim. Once, he was a beacon of hope to the people of Niflheim for a brighter future. Unfortunately, things change. Everything in his daily life is now dictated by the emperor and has been for the past five years. He has no freedom, and as much as he wants to be the person who inspired hope in the people again, he doesn’t dare to. Enter Noctis. Prince of Assassins and heir to the now non-existent Insomnian throne. Sent on an assassination mission to take out the Prince of Niflheim by a twist of fate, he’s not expecting to find someone who ALSO wants the emperor dead.
~~~~
When Noctis was selected for this, he had been proud.
Being fresh out of his training and chosen for such a high-grade mission was an honor. The king himself had picked him in a blind selection, not aware he’d chosen his own son. So, yes, the fact that his skills were substantial enough to be recognized by his father was the best thing that had happened to him in a while.
Though, killing the Niflheim prince didn’t sit right with him.
It was supposed to be a blow to their morale. He was the only heir to the throne, which since the Emperor was a bit older than his own dad, there wasn’t likely to have another. So, if he died, and when the Emperor died, the political environment might be destabilized. He was also the easiest to target, with little to no guards. Not to mention, like Noctis, he was beloved by his people. Supposedly.
From where Noct was sitting, that didn’t look like it was true.
The Nif prince sat in a chair by the window with a blank expression. Sometimes, he was reading. Other times, like now, he had nothing to do but stare outside. It wasn’t much of a view, but Noctis figured he’d managed to find something to watch. And he wouldn’t move for hours. Not until someone came and told him to get up and get ready for bed, or training, or any other thing they needed him for. If it wasn’t time for bed, then he was returned to his chair. Like a doll almost.
It gave him the chills honestly.
Everything about this prince screamed being controlled. Noctis almost felt like he was doing him a favor. And soon, it would be his time to strike. He dropped down from the tree he was hiding in, and threw a knife up toward the Prince’s window as he fell. Soon enough, he warped after it, hanging off the handle before swinging up and grabbing the window seal. He closed his eyes to wait for his signal. The Prince had just gone to bed, so it would be soon.
~
There was a knock on the door and one of his attendants stepped into his room. “It’s time for bed your highness.”
The Prince rose from his chair, his face neutral. “Alright.”
He followed his attendant over to his closet and allowed him to undress and redress him into his night clothes. The attendant then helped him into bed and brought the covers up to his chin. Every movement was mechanical and well-practiced. It only took three minutes.
“That will be all your highness.” The attendants voice was about as dull as Prompto felt.
“Of course,” He closed his eyes. “Good night.”
With that small exchange, the man left without replying and Prompto was left alone in his bed. As soon as the door was closed his eyes opened and he stared up at the ceiling. Like most nights, he began to regulate his breathing as much as he could. He’d found that if he held still and breathed steadily, he could fall asleep in about 15 minutes. He had it down to a science almost, considering sleep was the only place he wasn’t so tightly controlled.
It wasn’t always like this.
Prompto remembered before, when he was younger. He had been the one to dictate his schedule mostly. He still had to be tutored and learn the politics of the empire. Combat training as well. But he’d had freedom. He could stroll among the garden, or play in the unused wings of their home. If he truly wished to, he could stay up all night reading.
But then he got older, and he had been allowed to go out among the people to talk to them. To bring their complaints to the emperor as their prince. He hadn’t realized that his father hadn’t really wanted to hear their complaints, but had only sent him out to placate them. So, when he had gotten a chance to speak with his father at one of their rare dinners and brought it up, it hadn’t ended well.
No, his father had essentially ordered him to shut his mouth, in which Prompto had retaliated by shouting at him and standing up. Standing before the emperor had stood, what had he been thinking? A display of disobedience and major disrespect. One his father had not tolerated.
He had worked quickly. Dizzyingly so. One moment Prompto had been standing before his father. The next he had been dragged back to his quarters, and locked in for the night, with a promise of him not being allowed to leave his room for a week. But that hadn’t stopped Prompto.
Originally, he had only paced around the room, broke things, and shouted out the windows. Then, he started to escape his rooms and went back among the people, helping as much as he could where he could before the MTs found him and dragged him back. It was on these outings that he’d learned all his father had hid from him. The war on Insomnia being unjustified. Whole villages disappearing. The experimentation on humans. Infants even.
Then, one night, there was a small uprising. It hadn’t been huge, only a few brave souls really. Rallying behind him of all things. They’d claimed he’d be a better ruler than his father, and wanted his father removed so he could take his throne early. Prompto had been dragged out to the throne room when they had been caught and watched them die, one by one. But not before they had been tortured for their information. Like why they had done it. If there were more of them. And who their families were.
His father made him watch and the memory haunted him to this day.
But that wasn’t the worst part. His father brought the families in next. Twisted the children into Daemons to serve in his experiments. Killed the remaining adults in vicious ways.
“Let them serve as a lesson.” He had said. “You are just as expendable as them. Never forget that.”
Then he had been punished for inspiring them. He still couldn’t remember that part. And the thought of remembering made him sick with fear.
After all that, his father had staged a public appearance. They had never fought they told the media. Prompto would rule in his own time. He had to state that he never supported the rebel’s efforts, and that they had been misguided. They’d be rehabilitated and then returned to the public. He had to lie to his people. Put on a good show. Make them believe that the royal family was united and that they’d heard the people’s complaints and were working on fixing them. There was no need to worry, and that Prompto was now going to be focusing on learning how to rule effectively by observing his father.
He would no longer be among them. And that was supposed to satisfy their people.
It had worked was the sad part.
That was when he’d been locked away. Strict rules put in place. He wasn’t allowed to so much as move without someone telling him to. He slept when he was told to. Only spoke when allowed, and even then, it was only small phrases. Sometimes there were public appearances, with written speeches and cues for his emotions. He no longer belonged to himself. And if he stepped out of line he’d be killed. His father had let him know that in no uncertain terms.
It was hell to be so controlled, but soon enough five years had passed. Five years of being an emotionless puppet. Of unwavering obedience. Of being locked in his own mind.
Of the punishments that occurred when he couldn’t play the part.
But it was paying off finally. Slowly, his father had been letting him resume his combat lessons. If he was especially good, and did well in training, he was allowed on 5 minute walks in the garden. (Supervised of course, but just being outside was nice.) And soon, if he was excelling at an acceptable rate, his father hinted at eating dinner together again. With these small allowances, he was waking up after a five-year stupor. He began to pay attention to his surroundings again. After not being present in his own body for so long, it was somewhat maddening. He wanted his freedom back.
But…he knew that getting it back might be harder than he’d expected. Lately, he’d heard the servants whispering. The emperor was getting more ruthless. And he was worried that this change was a result of that. Which meant his father had something planned. So, he needed to play along a little longer. A little longer and he’d…
Well, he hadn’t quite decided if he was going to try and escape (to Altissia maybe?) or to attempt to finish what those rebels started. But that was a worry for another day. He could feel his eyes begin to drift close and nearly dropped off to sleep.
Thump.
His eyes slowly opened again, this time he was listening intently. That was out of place. His cycle of breathing was broken and he was immediately awake again. He listened for a little longer and upon hearing nothing, mentally settled.
But then the alarms went off in the distance. It sounded like it was somewhere outside his window…Which honestly could be any of the western sector of the fortress. But it was enough to warrant turning his head. Once he did he quickly closed his eyes and started to regulate his breathing as much as he could.
He had caught a glimpse of someone coming in the window. Which was pretty horrifying in any situation. But his mind was racing. The alarms going off were clearly a distraction. His mind immediately jumped to his father staging an attempt. Which meant he needed to make his move now. Leave. Something! But first the matter of the intruder. He had hoped he was just passing through, but nope. He was coming right over to the bed. Prompto counted his footsteps as he moved, and listened to how close he was.
There was an odd crystalline sound and a flash of blue above him. He heard the person’s clothes shift, and opened his eyes.
His eyes met surprised ones and he launched out of bed at him, tackling the man in a tangle of blankets, wrapping his arms around his chest at they hit the floor. He was fully aware that the man could still stab his back, but he was hoping that he’d be too off guard to realize it for the moment. But it was better than he hoped, as he heard the blade fall on the floor somewhere to the left of them.
This was probably not going according to plan for him.
Prompto grunted as the man started grappling with him. He was a little surprised that he didn’t try to hurt him. He didn’t even try punching him. He was just currently trying to pry him off. But Prompto had the upper hand, by way of being on top of him. But then as he was getting up to try and run for the window he felt the man hit his inner arm, which caused him to collapse back on top of him. The man then rolled them over, probably to pin him.
But like HELL was Prompto going to just let him.
They eventually ended up wrestling on the floor like two school kids. It would have been fun if it wasn’t for that fact that this man had just literally tried to kill him. Speaking of which, if this was an assassination attempt, this man was doing a poor job of it.
“Will- you- just- STOP.” The man said in Lucian accent.
Prompto froze for a moment, which obviously surprised the man as well considering they both froze. He was sitting on the man’s legs, one of his attacker’s wrists in his hand while the other was pushing on his face. There was a buzzing in Prompto’s ears. He had spoken like a Lucian. A LUCIAN. Not a Gralean. This wasn’t an attempt by his father. Which was both a relief and a disappointment. He couldn’t figure out why it was a disappointment, so he wasn’t going to think about it.
“Holy shit you’re from Insomnia.” He said breathlessly. Both their eyes were wide as they stared at each other.
But then Prompto heard heavy footsteps coming down the hall and immediately became panicked.
“Sorry.” He hissed, and used his free hand the punch the man as hard as he could.
Now. It was by no means hard-enough to knock him out, but it damn well stunned him. And while he was stunned Prompto used the grip he had on the man’s wrist to pull him up into a sitting position. After which he hurriedly dove behind him and hooked his arms under his shoulders and practically dragged him across the room. The man then realized that the blonde had him in a hold and was clearly taking him somewhere so he started kicking his legs.
“Let go! What do you think you’re doing?” He began to call out.
“If you don’t shut up we’ll both be killed.” Prompto muttered into his ear.
That shocked the man into silence, which Prompto used to his advantage by heaving him into the closet and shutting the door. He looked on the floor for the blade the man had, and thanked his lucky stars that it wasn’t very far. He darted over and back before the man had gotten back to his feet inside the closet and stabbed the knife into the bottom of the door seal, effectively preventing the man from opening the door.
“Just shut up and be quiet please.” Prompto begged through the door. “They’re coming.”
With that, Prompto scooped the blankets off the floor and jumped back into bed. Thankfully, he managed to arrange himself as he normally lay before the door to his room opened, and he closed his eyes, pretending to sleep.
“Your highness, wake up.”
It was easy to slip back into the calm and controlled personal he used to deal with this man. His eyes fluttered open in a perfect pantomime of his usual wake up routine.
“There was an attack in the western hall, where the researchers are stationed. Was there anything of note here?”
Prompto shook his head and dared a glance at the man. “No. Everything is fine.”
The man glanced around the room while Prompto was thanking the six that it was so dark by the closet. When he saw nothing out of place, he nodded his head in approval.
“Alright Highness. Please return to sleep.”
“Of course. Good night.” He said, and the attendant left.
He waited until his foot-steps faded from the hall and then leapt back out of bed and crossed the room to his closet. Now that he was at this point, he wasn’t quite sure what to do. So, he decided to go with what he’d been good at before being isolated.
Talking.
With a timid knock on the closet door he asked, “If I let you out of there would you try to kill me again?”
There was a pause, and he could hear the man shifting around in his closet, most likely to face to door.
“Well…I mean, that’s kind of the only reason I’m here?”
Prompto bit his lip thinking, “O-oh…that’s…”
“Yeah.” The man sounded like he settled against the doors. “Sorry.”
He in turn also settled against the closet. “Guess…I can’t let you out yet then.”
“I guess.” They sat in silence for a moment before the man spoke again. “Earlier you said…they’d kill us both if they found me. Was that true?”
He nodded his head though the man couldn’t see it. “Yeah. They’d do it in a heartbeat.”
“That’s…wrong. On so many levels. They’d kill you because an assassin came through your window?” The man sounded shocked. Good. Prompto could work with shocked.
“Again, yes.”
“But why? Not that I’m eager to die or anything, but why wouldn’t they just save you?”
Prompto leaned his head back against the wood of the door. “What do you know of me?”
“Uh…how is that…?” The mans sounded a bit confused, so there must not be much out there about him.
Pity.
“Just answer the question.” A deep sigh left him.
The man was silent for a few moments, and Prompto wondered if he was going to ignore him. But then he spoke. “Well…From our intel, you’re beloved by your people.”
The surprised him enough to say, “Still?”
“Should you not be?” The man’s voice turned slightly confrontational, as if daring him to tell him why he shouldn’t be loved.
They didn’t have time for all that.
“Depends on who you’re asking.” He left it at that and said nothing more.
The man then changed the topic slightly. “…If you don’t mind me asking…Why would they kill their prince?”
“I think…dad’s been looking for an excuse to…get rid of me lately.” He inhaled slowly and then exhaled at the same rate. “Anything out of the ordinary would be enough. Including an assassin coming in the window. Easy to make it look like you did your job before they could save me.”
Now that he was talking with someone, it was easier to put together. Obvious almost. The temptation of freedom by allowing him to walk in the gardens. Learning how to fight again. Tastes of the life he used to have. Either he was trying to provoke Prompto into running away, effectively removing him as his heir, or he wanted Prompto to snap and attack him. Which would also remove him as heir because he’d be dead. He could also be trying to frame him later. Honestly, there were many things his father could be planning.
“Get rid of you?”
“Kill. You know. One shot to the head. Or a dagger to the heart... I originally thought you were one of his honestly.” Prompto said with just a hint of bitterness.
“If it’s so bad, why didn’t you run?” The man spoke softly, as if he feared Prompto stopping. But that only served to exasperate him.
“And leave my people without a ruler when my dad passes?” Prompto glanced at the doors of the closet in irritation. “Never.”
The man remained silent, so Prompto, after curling his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms around himself, continued.
“…My father is not a kind person. I’ve seen what he does to those beneath him.” A shiver ran down his spine as he added on in a whisper, “I’ve experienced it.”
“I can’t allow him to continue,” he said a bit firmer, “but the only hope I have of stopping him is to outlive him.”
“You want to stop him?” The surprise in his voice only drew Prompto into speaking more.
“I’d give anything to.” He said softly.
“Let me explain,” He then began, “When…When I was younger, I used to go outside the fortress. Among the people we’re supposed to serve. And the people told me of his deeds. Of people disappearing into the night. The unjust war against your people.” He took a steadying breath. “Of experiments that shouldn’t see the light of day. Upon our own people. Children even.”
“That…Lead to a small uprising of people. In my name. They wanted me to rule. But it failed. And I’ve been locked away ever since.” Prompto buried his head in his knees.
“We’ve…Never heard of this. The people were willing to fight behind you?” The man sounded like he was getting to his feet, so Prompto did the same, leaning against the doors to reinforce them in case he was trying to get out.
“They were. It’s been five years since then. I... I doubt they’d do it now. I’ve been nothing more than my father’s puppet for the same length of time.” A bit of panic entered his voice as he felt the man push against the doors. “Please don’t break the doors, someone might come!”
“I’m not.” The man said, “Just let me out, I swear on the six I’m not going to attack you.”
He continued leaning against the door, “Sorry to say buddy, but swears don’t mean much around here in case you haven’t noticed.”
But the man kept pressing outward, so with a groan, Prompto stepped out of the way and jerked out the dagger. Once it was gone, the doors burst open and the man tumbled to the floor. While he was getting up Prompto leveled the dagger at him, even though his hands shook.
“Please, I don’t want to fight.”
“Then don’t.” The man stood up and removed the mask he was wearing, revealing someone around the same age as him. “I’m not going to try anything. If I was, you’d already be dead.”
At that, Prompto snorted. “No offense, but you kind of botched your first go at me. What’s to stop you from messing up the second?”
The man glowered at him. “Shut it.”
When the man stayed true to his word and made no move to attack, Prompto lowered the dagger and then went back to sit on his bed. Wordlessly, the man went over to the chair Prompto spent most of his day in, and sat down as well.
“So…how are you going to get out? I’m assuming you can’t leave unless you…well, you know.” Prompto once again curled up, hugging himself.
“No, I’m not supposed to. But I mean… What you’ve told me changes things in my opinion. So killing you isn’t an option.” The man shrugged, at loss for what he should do. The right thing, though it didn’t feel like the right thing, would to be kill the prince and get back to Insomnia without looking back.
But then the prince spoke again. “My death wouldn’t hurt anything, as I’ve said, you’d be doing my dad a favor… And he’s planning something. I know it. Things are changing around here after years of being the same… I want to stop him. It. Whatever he’s doing.”
Prompto suddenly came to a decision, and got up from his chair before he could talk himself out of it.
The man glanced out the window, the rendezvous signal catching his eye. But then he turned his attention back to the prince, who to his surprise was approaching him. There was determination and desperation in his eyes in equal measure. And normally, he’d have panicked seeing someone walking toward him with a dagger in hand. But he didn’t feel like he was going to be attacked.
True to his intuition, the prince pointed the dagger at him, handle first. “You’re an assassin, right? Then teach me. You can’t get near the emperor. But I can.”
“You want to kill your father?” The man’s jaw dropped. This was… a lot. Too much. The mission has changed too much. The prince himself was offering to commit regicide. He needed to report in. NOW.
“He has to die. And soon.” Then one of the saddest face the man had ever seen crossed the prince’s face. “I don’t want to, but it must be done. Look how many people have died because of him. Yours and mine.”
“I’ll…see what I can do.” The man took the blade back from him, holding it with the blade pointed downward, and not at the prince. “I have to go for now. But I will come back. I promise.”
The prince laughed as he stood and went to the window. “Even if you don’t, thank you. For my life.”
He then gave a small bow to the man in gratitude. Considering he was a royal, it was one of the highest honors he could give just as himself. And upon straightening, the man’s face had softened.
“Prince Prompto?” He said, making a choice.
“Yes?”
“My name is Noctis.”
Before Prompto could ask anything about his name, which might have clued him in to just who he was, Noctis disappeared in a flash of light after throwing the dagger he’d given back to him.
Lessons Learned from My Journey as a Self-Taught Developer
The path of the self-taught developer is tough and filled with uncertainty. There is no straight line from newbie to career programmer. Because of this, I believe all self-taught developers have a unique story to tell.
In this article, I’ve shared a few stories and lessons I've learned from my time teaching myself programming. Hopefully reading about my experiences will help you reflect on your past and motivate you moving forward.
Focus on the process
When I first started learning to program, I never had the intention of making a career out of it. I just wanted to make a specific app.
My journey started when I was a senior in college. I just finished Richard Branson’s biography and I was probably reading too much TechCrunch. I was pumped full of entrepreneurial energy.
I was constantly reading about how college kids were receiving massive amounts of investment for their mobile app ideas. I thought I could be one of those college kids.
One day, while walking in-between classes, an app idea hit me. I quickly became convinced that I’d found the next big thing.
I was consumed by the idea and stopped paying attention to lectures. My excitement for the app idea quickly grew to the point where I felt I needed to take action.
There was one big problem. My idea was a mobile app and I didn’t know anyone who could build mobile apps.
So I thought, "what the hell, how hard could programming be?" I was losing interest in my major and I was spending a lot of time playing Xbox. I could put some of my free time towards building out my mobile app idea.
Sometimes being naive helps you take action when you normally wouldn’t.
I was a college student with no programming, business, or design experience trying to learn Android so I could build a complex mobile app. I guess that’s what you get when you mix a big idea with the Silicon Valley hype machine.
I wish I could tell you things went well from here.
I bought a few books on Android development and spent countless hours in my room trying to duct-tape my app together. I didn’t care how the app worked, I just wanted a finished product.
Time went on and the app turned into a Frankenstein of copy and pasted code. The app didn’t have many features and it barely ran without crashing.
It wasn’t until I accidentally got into a Computer Science class that I realized that I should focus more on actually trying to learn software development.
My inability to program lead me to abandon my initial app idea. I'd come to the realization that I wasn’t going to make the next big thing, at least not yet.
Over time I corrected my behavior and took learning more seriously. I started to enjoy programming and eventually started a career as a software developer.
Take Away
My big app idea consumed me for a long time. It put my focus on the end result rather than the process of getting there.
When you get too focused on the end result, you start taking shortcuts. Shortcuts might lead some short-term progress but in the long run, your lack of knowledge will always catch up to you.
It’s important to remember that learning anything big, like programming, requires many small steps. Each step will need to be treated with care.
Learning new things is like building a house. You start with the foundation and build up. If the foundation is faulty the whole thing will crumble down sooner or later.
Sometimes building a strong foundation requires you to slow down. There’s no shame in going slow. The people who understand the basics the first time will end up getting ahead of the people who have to go back and relearn them.
There’s an old Chinese proverb that goes:
It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward.
It's not how fast you can do something, it's how slowly you can do it correctly.
I was a perfect example. From the outside, it might’ve looked like I was a programming whiz kid. In reality, I couldn’t build an app to save my life.
Focus on the process and you will surprise yourself with how much progress you make each day.
Stack Overflow is awesome (and dangerous)
As I was building my killer app, Stack Overflow became my best friend.
Anytime I got stuck I would try to craft together a perfect question to ask the Stack Overflow community. I averaged a few questions a day.
Not only would I post questions, but I would also treat the answers on Stack Overflow as Gospel. I would spend a crazy amount of time scouring the site to try to find an exact chunk of code that would fix my problem.
When I found a suitable answer, I would copy and paste it right into my codebase and try to make it work with my existing code. I spent little time trying to understand the code I was adding.
I made brute-force trial and error a new art form.
This process went on for a while until eventually, I wised up and realized the flaws of my approach.
Take Away
Stack Overflow is a blessing and a curse. It’s great at helping you solve problems; however, if you aren’t careful, you can quickly become dependent on the website.
Sometimes the website is too good at solving problems. It creates a false sense of confidence that can lead to more headaches down the road.
Stack Overflow shows you how to get something to work but it doesn't usually explicitly tell you why it works.
Understanding the how is important. Bugs need to be fixed and code needs to run.
However, understanding why something works is what's going to help you apply the knowledge again in the future.
It's like the quote...
"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
Copy and pasting code from Stack Overflow is like giving a man a fish. Understanding why a snippet of code works is like teaching a man to fish.
There's nothing wrong with copying and pasting code. We all do it. It's only a problem when it becomes a crutch and stunts our growth as a developer.
The thing I had to learn the hard way was that it's impossible to learn anything if the answers are constantly given to you. There are no short-cuts in the learning process.
When you're stuck, attempt to solve your coding problem at least a few times before going to Google.
When you find yourself copying and pasting code, spend a little time trying to understand the code snippet before moving on.
Find experienced help
The first thing I did after I decided I wanted to learn programming was buy two Android development books.
At the start, I followed the exercises in the books closely and worked through the example projects. However, I quickly got frustrated with the progress I was making following the book and decided to go off and figure out how to program on my own.
As you’ve read above, that slowly resulted in disaster.
I spent countless hours isolated in my room trying to figure out simple programming problems. I was getting stuck on every new line of code and it didn't feel like I was making much progress.
I was helplessly stuck and my life was a cocktail of doubt, frustration, and an overwhelming feeling of being lost.
To make matters worse, I had the bright idea to start using a massive C library called FFMPEG. My app needed to edit videos, so I thought it was a good idea to utilize the library’s robust functionality.
It wasn’t my smartest move, considering at the time, I could barely get my Android app working.
I wasted a lot of time trying to read the C code and figuring out how I could use it in my app. I struggled to even get the library imported into my Android project. The Android code and C code didn't want to play nice.
After many hours of getting nowhere, I eventually became frustrated and abandoned the library.
Around the same time as the FFMPEG debacle, I signed up for an Object Oriented Programming class. I'm honestly not sure how I got in. I later found out that I was the only non-Computer Science major in the class. I think there was a bug in the enrollment software.
The first assignment was to build a Blackjack program. I’d been teaching myself programming for 5-6 months at this point, and I felt somewhat confident with my skills.
I finished the assignment and felt good about my work.
It didn't take long for that feeling to fade.
My whole program was written in one huge method. Just about everyone else in the class was able to pick up on the fact that the program needed to be separated into classes.
Not good.
Take Away
Luckily, the classwork and guidance from the teacher allowed me to take a step back from my Android app and reflect on my programming abilities. I started to value learning and reigned back my desires to make a completed app.
I've now come to realize that if I would've spoken to just one experienced developer in those early days, they would’ve seen what I was doing, set my priorities straight, and talked some sense into me. They would’ve helped me correct my path when I was going down useless dead ends (like trying to work with FFMPEG).
Instead, I isolated myself from the world partially because I felt like there wasn’t anyone who could help me.
Isolation is a double-edged sword. On one side, it helps you focus on the task at hand. On the flip side, it removes you from the world starving you of crucial feedback.
There were a lot of ways I could’ve found help. I could’ve tried to find a professor/student at the university with Android experience or looked to the local community for help. I also could’ve tried finding an online Android community.
Experienced developers are like a compass. They won’t get you to your destination but they will make sure you are pointed in the right direction. Their help can often be the difference between success and failure.
Make sure you seek out guidance wherever you can find it. It will save you time and frustration down the road.
Craft your environment
This might be the only thing I felt like I did right when I was teaching myself programming.
Throughout my life, I’ve been really bad at studying for tests or doing my homework at home. There are just too many distractions at any given moment. I would often try to find refuge in libraries or coffee shops.
Luckily I applied this rule when I was teaching myself programming.
I ended up becoming a regular at a few local coffee shops. I preferred coffee shops over other study locations because they provided some variety and it’s easy to hide (easy access to caffeine doesn’t hurt either).
If I was studying at home, I made sure my door was shut and my roommates knew not to disturb me for a certain period of time.
Regardless of where I was, I would make sure my music was loud enough so I couldn’t hear what was going on around me.
I can’t say I was perfect at finding a distraction-free work environment but I was able to succeed a majority of the time.
Take Away
Having the right work environment is often an overlooked part of learning.
Focus is a foundational component of memory and skill acquisition. When you try to learn something new, the strength of the learning is directly linked to the intensity of your focus. When your focus is weak, new information will be less sticky which will result in slower learning and more time studying.
Your work environment should be distraction-free and should allow for long uninterrupted stretches of focus. Even with COVID-19 making it difficult to work remotely, there are still actions you can take to design your learning environment.
Here are a few things you can do:
Find a location where people won’t interrupt you
Put your phone in airplane mode
Use some sort of timed website blocker for social media and news sites
Wear headphones and listen to non-distracting music (preferably a long playlist so you don’t have to constantly switch songs)
Avoid TV or other highly stimulating surroundings
Have a notebook nearby to write down any tasks or ideas that pop into your head
Make it known to the people around you that you don't want to be disturbed
Only you can decide where and how to craft your environment. But make sure you do, because it’s worth it.
Get out into the world and meet people
Landing my first programming job was sort of a random occurrence.
I just moved to Omaha, Nebraska and I had around a year of self-taught development under my belt.
I knew very few people in Omaha, so I searched Meetup.com to try and find other people interested in Android development. I found a Meetup focused on mobile development which covered both iOS and Android development and I decided to go.
Going to that first meeting was nerve-racking. I spent around 10 minutes in my car at the venue deciding if I should go in or drive off.
I was intimidated. I wasn’t confident of my programming skills and I knew everyone at the Meetup had much more experience than I did.
I finally said, screw it and went inside.
I’m glad I did.
I started to attend regularly and during one Meetup, not too long after I moved to Omaha, I met a recruiter who was looking for an Android contractor. We talked for a while and I got an interview for the job later that week.
Before the interview, I felt confident. During the interview, I was a deer in the headlights.
The interviewer was talking about the project I’d be working on and it all went right over my head. I tried to stay engaged but they could tell it was out of my range.
After the interview, they asked me to hang-out for an hour so I could talk to someone else. Knowing I blew it, I walked around downtown trying to clear my head.
I ended up interviewing with someone else at the company, and shortly after, they offered me an internship.
I was so shocked that after I signed all the paperwork and got my work laptop running, I went over to the CEO and asked if it was a paid internship or not.
The internship turned into a full-time job and I started my career as a software developer.
Take Away
When you are self-taught, people are not going to come and seek you out. You will need to find opportunities for yourself.
Graduates of four-year universities and code schools have the advantage of leveraging their school's network when finding a job. Self-taught developers don’t have this luxury.
Self-taught developers will need to go out into the world and build their networks themselves.
Cold calling employers and sending out resumes can work. However, I've found people like hiring people who are close to them in their social network.
Websites like Meetup.com are great for finding monthly programming specific groups. Even in a pandemic, there are still many virtual Meetups that are very informative and beneficial.
There are also other Slack channels or Discord communities that you can leverage to make meaningful relationships. You can also try reaching out to various people in your area and ask to have a quick 15-minute virtual coffee with them.
Do what you can to build up the nerve to reach out and talk with people. Be friendly and talk to them about your experiences. Make sure people know of your long-term goal of finding a job.
Put yourself in situations where something positive might happen. You can’t win a raffle if you never buy a ticket.
Consider any opportunity that comes your way, because even if it looks like a dead-end, it has the potential to lead to something bigger.
My internship was a huge pay-cut to the other offers I had at the time. However, I knew if I worked hard it would be an opportunity for me to break into the tech industry.
The key is to think of job opportunities in the long-term. Internships or part-time jobs might not give you your desired salary upfront but they might open up doors in the future.
Conclusion
As you can see, I made a lot of mistakes in my journey of becoming a self-taught developer.
Teaching yourself to code is never a straight road. All our stories are unique.
The key is to keep going and to avoid getting discouraged when things aren't going your way.
I encourage other self-taught developers to share their stories. Not only will they provide valuable insights, but they will also help shine a light on the unique paths we’ve taken.
Hopefully, my story and the lessons I learned will help you moving forward.
If you want to hear about other insights I've learned along the way, follow my account Zero to Programmer on Twitter. The goal of the account is to help you learn programming more efficiently.
I watched a couple of movies! (April roundup)
I’m glad to announce that I finally found a way to rave about the movies I’ve watched without boring you all to death, driving myself to the brink of insanity, and damaging my eyesight even more. Instead of giving a comprehensive review on each one, I decided to give you my top picks for every month in an attempt to convince you to watch these life-changing pieces of cinema! Maybe someday I could include some of the worst I’ve seen as well because it's easier (and more fun) to point out the flaws I spot.
So without further ado, here are the creme of the crop for the month of April!
Philadelphia (1993, dir. Jonathan Demme) ★★★★★
This superbly crafted film was one of the first in Hollywood to tackle the issue of HIV/AIDS—and with the right amount of sensitivity—during a time when discrimination against victims was at its most rampant. That fact alone makes it deserving of the praise, recognition, and accolades it has collected over the years. Add to that the remarkable performance of Tom Hanks as Andy Beckett, the lawyer fired from the prestigious firm he works for who enlists the help of Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to take this matter to court. His dedication to the role is evident not only in his dramatic weight loss but the intensity of the emotions he brings to all of his scenes. Though I know a lot of audiences are concerned that the account is told mainly from Miller’s perspective, I found this aspect crucial to his growth as a character and the movie’s effectivity as a call to empathy and compassion.
Certified Copy (2010, dir. Abbas Kiarostami) ★★★★½
It's so difficult to review this without giving away what makes it different from anything that's ever been made, probably. But then again, even if I dive deep into the plot and provide my theories, I doubt it’ll make sense so I’ll say this. Certified Copy is a mind-bender of an arthouse film disguised as a love story of the Before Sunset variety. It’s a deceivingly linear tale of a French woman known only as “She” (Juliette Binoche) who goes to a book signing and offers to explore the city of Tuscany with the author (William Shimell). His work asserts that the reproduction of a certain thing possesses as much value as the original, so much so that it can even take its place. The extent to which this is true is shown in the many ways their relationship changes in the span of a single afternoon. It’s normal to be frustrated once you’ve finished it. I had a “What the hell?” moment myself and had to rewatch some parts a few more times. But once you realize that the plot is an artifice, like fiction and art itself, that’s when you come to terms with how real it actually is.
The Farewell (2019, dir. Lulu Wang) ★★★★★
This is practically Wang's two-hour thesis on why grandmothers are the best people on the planet and we don’t deserve them. It's not like I needed an external source to prove it was true but I adored it anyway. This Oscar snub is “based on a true lie”: Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen), the matriarch of a Chinese clan, is diagnosed with cancer, and her loved ones go to extreme lengths to keep it a secret from her. I appreciated the accurate depiction of the mess that is the Asian extended family: immigrant parents, their first-generation kids, and the relatives they left behind at the homeland under one roof can only mean endless bickering and picking at old wounds. But in all seriousness, its grasp of human emotions—as seen in the brilliant acting performances and authentic dialogue—reels you in instantly and keeps you emotionally invested and painfully waiting for the heartbreaking (?) conclusion.
Interstellar (2014, dir. Christopher Nolan) ★★★★★
In what is arguably Nolan’s most complex and ambitious work yet, we find Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) in what appears to be a shadow of the Earth we live in right now. After a fateful turn of events, he is tapped by NASA to carry out a mission in search of a habitable world for the human population. Rarely do we see a creative project that aspires to be everything at once and succeeds with flying colors. Interstellar is that gem for me. It pushes the limits of our imagination and tests the very boundaries of science and space while serving as a reminder of what it means to be human. It may clock in at 167 minutes but I think that if the run time had been cut down, it would be impossible to do justice to this multi-faceted story. In fact, with the emotionally resonant performances by the cast as well as the phenomenal score (Hans Zimmer, you are a god) and cinematography, I am honestly willing to see another three hours of extra footage.
Mommy (2014, dir. Xavier Dolan) ★★★★½
This… was a lot. I remember watching this first thing in the morning a couple of weeks ago, and not being able to do anything of importance for the entire day since I was too busy wondering if I’ll ever be suitable for the lifelong commitment that is motherhood. This award-winning, affecting tale revolves around Die Despres (Anne Dorval), a struggling journalist and single mom to Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon), her hyperactive, abusive son diagnosed with ADHD. Although a law had been passed in Canada which lets cash-strapped parents place their troubled kids in hospitals, she refuses to give him up and takes him under her wing: after all, they’re best at loving even when it’s hard. What unfolds after makes it hard to tell how the whole thing ends, but it’s a visually arresting and thought-provoking experience anyway. Dolan also possesses a strong command of the language of filmmakers: critics agree that its most notable aspect is the fact that it was shot in a 1:1 aspect ratio, which allowed me to assume the position of a next-door neighbor peering through their living room window.
Frances Ha (2012, dir. Noah Baumbach) ★★★★★
Before Greta Gerwig was the director extraordinaire we know her to be, she was Frances Halladay, an aspiring dancer who moves to New York City with her best friend and comes face to face with several, consecutive life crises. Her reality couldn’t be any further removed from mine (as a 19-year-old student on the complete opposite side of the world), but it remains highly relatable. At their core, her problems are rooted in a fear of loneliness and failure—just like the rest of us! Come to think of it, maybe that’s why it’s in black-and-white: to give the movie a sense of timelessness since it tackles themes and issues that remain universal and prevalent across generations. I loved Frances as a protagonist, though she far from perfect: she’s immature and petty and quite frankly, she had no clue what she was doing until the last 15 minutes—just like me! And yet she powered through in the end, which gives me hope that I’ll be able to do the same.
Fight Club (1999, dir. David Fincher) ★★★★½
Believe it or not, despite its straightforward title and predominantly male fanbase, I was completely taken aback when the unnamed narrator (Edward Norton) and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) started beating each other up in the middle of a parking lot—the very event that led to the establishment of their underground fight club. What initially appears to be a man’s search for a way out of the boring humdrum of his everyday existence evolves into a structural analysis of consumer capitalism and critique of toxic masculinity. There’s a lot of gore and violence but I pulled through thanks to the stunning visuals, unpredictable plot, and Brad Pitt’s beautiful face. Although the twist towards the end wasn’t exactly revolutionary for me because it kind of resembled Primal Fear (1996), it was still a mind-blowing and fitting conclusion to this cult classic.
Pretty Woman (1990, dir. Garry Marshall) ★★★★★
This modern-day Cinderella story about a hooker who falls in love with a wealthy businessman has become problematic for my generation. There are a ton of essays on Letterboxd attempting to start discourse on its ethics, calling it out for its misogynistic undertones, and criticizing it for being unrealistic. I actually saw a review that said it indirectly promotes prostitution as a means to get ahead in life, which could wrongly influence teenage girls. (How stupid do you think we are?) At the end of the day, this is a romantic comedy—and an outstanding one, at that! This probably has the most equal distribution of swoon-worthy scenes and laugh-out-loud moments out of all the romcoms I’ve watched, and we have the lead actors’ insane chemistry and the consistently witty script to thank. Needless to say, Julia Roberts is an absolute delight as Vivian Ward and it’s only fitting that it was this particular role that catapulted her to superstardom. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna rewatch this then proceed to play It Must Have Been Love for another 70 times.
The Fundamentals of Caring (2016, dir. Rob Burnett) ★★★★★
I genuinely think that everything Paul Rudd touches turns to gold. Here, he plays Ben, caretaker to Trevor (Craig Roberts), a sarcastic teen suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Together, they make a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a cross-country road trip to see several roadside attractions and of course, come to terms with their own issues. I admit that my love for this comes with the acute awareness that if I had found it on Netflix at a different time, I wouldn’t have appreciated it as much. It’s fairly predictable, it doesn’t strive towards anything complex or require much reflection on our part but it ties together neatly and satisfyingly in the end—truly a perfect comfort film! The equivalent of the warm, 10-second-long, oxytocin-inducing hug that we all need and can't have right now, given the state of our world!
Edit (05/09/20): I’m currently binge-watching Timothee Chalamet interviews and he just told Stephen Colbert that he had auditioned for this but wasn’t accepted for the job. Imagine him and Paul Rudd together... the visual power that duo would hold... I would miss the point of the movie entirely.
So, that’s it for this month! I’ve actually been spending more time writing lately but I hope I can continue to squeeze in something to watch into my schedule so I can actually be consistent with this series. Till next time! Exciting things up ahead! Wishing you love and light always, and don’t forget to wash your hands, check your privilege and pray for our frontliners!
