I'm gonna try out posting my ~monthly devlog roundup here as well. These suckers are glorified changelogs with anecdotes and gifs galore. Let me know if this is something you like seeing show up on your dash?

Map Editor

Got units able to be placed/deleted/moved in the mission editor

Can paint/remove command zones in the editor

Can paint minecraft-like terrain blocks in the editor

Can paint/rotate multi-tile props in the editor

Can edit unit character sheets and portrait via the editor

3D maps

Did a bunch of art tests with 3D mech models, provided by GeneralChaos, which we ended up deciding not to go with to keep things simple.

To avoid the can of worms that is animation, we'd have to lean into a static "tabletop minatures" aesthetic which we decided is not a style we want to be stuck with. By sticking with 2D sprites, we avoid falling into a sort of uncanny valley; it's easier to get away with not animating a 2D sprite than it is for a 3D model.

 We also experimented with 3D terrain. We decided to make a rule that the visual style for a piece of terrain should match its mechanical effect: obstructing terrain that you can't move through, such as rocks or buildings, will be in 3D, while non-obstructing terrain like trees will stick with 2D sprites.

Hooking up the 3D camera to follow events like movement and attacks did a LOT for making it starting to feel like it's cohering into an Actual Game™

Implemented cover! And an attack preview! Cover works by aiming a ray from the target to the originator (technically to and from each voxel of each, respectively, to handle size 2s shooting above size 1 cover) and tracking all the terrain blocks it hits (how we'll handle non-terrain hard cover TBD). I think I have it working according to Perijove's cover rules manual, but I'm sure there'll be edge cases to work out. This is a case where things are significantly simplified by working in squares instead of hexes; hexes have a lot more possible weird angles you have to deal with.

Re-added what I'm stubbornly calling Combat Popcorn; little bits of text that pop out when you use abilities and attacks.

UI & game screens

Added ability for the engine to show UI that's anchored to the game world via a little word bubble line but also stay on screen as the camera moves around.

Got word bubbles working; you can now write dialogue in the mission editor, hit playtest, and see it work in a mission! (it does actually translate correctly now; this gif is just from a bug I thought was funny)

Got ability effects mostly behaving appropriately again, including muzzle flashes. The easiest way to handle them ended up being NOT billboarding them so they always face the camera (like all other 2D sprites in the game); instead, I put them on a plane parallel with the ground and just spin them around the unit to point at wherever their target is.

Did some work ironing out our tooltip system. The standard in CRPGs these days is this kind of nested labyrinth of tooltops that you see in Baldur's Gate 3:

I Did Not Want to try and figure out how to wrangle that much UI, so we're instead opting to cap the nested tooltips at the second layer. You can lock a general tooltip for e.g. an action and then mouseover various items within that tooltip to get glossary definitions...

...and then instead of having those glossary tips be lockable/mouse-overable themselves, I collect all related terms to that glossary definition and let you tab through them.

Added skin overlay functionality to the portrait maker, enabling textures like scars, tattoos, stubble, and vitiligo to be applied to just the skin and not extend off into space.

Midway through writing this update, Carpenter sent me this gif of the randomization button working! There's a still a bunch of skintones/assets missing and a few are a bit janky, but it was exciting to start seeing the range of these lil freaks (affectionate) that this editor can create.

Mourning cloak license!

This is the one I'm probably most excited about: I did a bit of a content dive and implemented a basic character sheet + all Mourning Cloak traits and equipment. They don't have fancy graphics yet, but the weapons and systems can be added via the character sheet and used in-game.

It took a little under a day, including adding soon-to-be common mechanisms like bonus damage. This is great news in that it means the engine we've been building for so long in the abstract seems to do a great job in handling comprehensive actual game content, and that it looks like we've set ourselves up for success when it comes time to buckle down on churning that out.

I'm sure other licenses will come with unique difficulties (I fear the day it comes time to do the Mule Harness // Goblin CP) but I'm feeling good about it!

Vertical slice?

Taking a step back, the pressing question on my mind has been "when will we have a playable early access build?"

I was originally hoping for Feb/March, but what we've internally been referring to as the "3D cataclysm" has pushed everything back by at least three months, so the target for the first alpha build is now in May. So, ah, thanks for your patience! Seeing things come together, I've become more and more convinced that moving to 3D was the right call.

WHIPLASH — LOOK BACK

work is horrifying. men are horrifying. the whole world is horrifying, and horribly against her. she tries not to let her structure crumble — but there are limits to everything.

002. that's the industry, baby! / masterlist / 004. distractor

"I hate him," she mutters under her breath. It's barely a whisper beneath the noise around them, but the anger laced in it is pungent. He watches her take one, two, three sips from her drink before slinking down onto the wooden counter.

"You still haven't told me why."

Her head slowly rotates, shifting around in the nook she's created with her folded arms, to face him in all his midnight glory. The music is nothing but white noise, and all she can hear is the subtle thumping of her heart against her ribs.

(She doesn't really remember how he looked that night. All she recalls is his signature hat and the pretty jewelry he wore.)

There's only a string of restraint left in her. Her rationale — fine-tuned and perfectly curated after just a few years of surviving through this industry — tells her to keep quiet; that any details about her irritation and regret, no matter how long they may fester in the pools of her stomach, cannot slip out. But when he lays down to match her position and whispers a question, one she barely misses, the little string snaps.

"I'll just listen, if you want. No advice. No input. Just an ear."

(What happens between that and the moment they find themselves outside is a blur.)

It all spills out, the reservoir that she's been carefully maintaining up until then bursting at the seams. She rambles on about shitty coworkers, who can't seem to stop relying on her, shitty editors, who don't have any sense of proper management, and a shitty ex, who used all of it to get his way. All of her — the people pleasing, the work obsession, the ease in which she let things happen under the guise that something good would come out of it all. She tells him about it all in chronological order (because it's the only way she seems to remember things these days), from the opportunities he'd stolen from her grasp and the arguments and the pure, bubbling humiliation she feels just from thinking about it.

And he listens. Like he'd promised.

A part of her finds solitude in the knowledge that her chances of seeing him again are slim to none. Another part longs to see him again — how can she resist when he looks at her like she'd hung up the stars over their heads?

(The rest of the night is gone to time. She can't recall anything — she actively tries not to, a subconscious decision made the day after. What she does know is that she regrets it — regrets baring her soul, wide open, for someone gone so quickly.

It's a necessary evil. She knows she can't grow attached. But part of her wishes he'd stayed, just for another hour.)

2024 in writing

Another rotation in the books, somehow! From a publishing perspective, I didn't have the most interesting year--but as I look back on 2024, I'm finding I did have an interesting year in writing.

For one thing, I took two workshops with Lindsay Merbaum, an author I admire and an excellent workshop facilitator. I recommend checking out the Study Coven for some truly cool themed classes coming up; the syllabi for Smutty Study and Witches III were full of fun and provocative reading, and the work itself yielded two short stories, plus multiple poems and journal entries. I put together a collection of weird short stories and did intensive research on spots to submit it, a project that's still ongoing and will get fresh attention in the new year.

I also drafted a novella that's "in-universe" to Little Nothing, the first brand-new long-form project I'd completed in years. It's true what they say: every book is a different writing experience. Every book teaches you how to write all over again. More news on this front to come, I hope!

In 2024, I prioritized listening to the muse, whether it drew me to trying out new poetic forms, writing fanfic of my own work, or keeping myself to clipped word counts. As autumn ended, I found that this follow-your-bliss practice had made me energized to take up a more disciplined practice of write-and-submit. As we approach the darkest parts of the year, I'm excited to write to intriguing prompts and not overthink things before submitting... and start work on a shelved manuscript.

Throughout the year, I did put published work into the world. I continued to write for horror media website DIS/MEMBER, revisiting the Exorcist TV series, interviewing cool authors, and reviewing a few movies. In 2025 I'll take on the role of Lit Editor for DIS/MEMBER, and we've got some cool new stuff lined up (think cover reveals, indie publisher spotlights, and more). I also published the third volume of what's become my Halloween tradition, a zine with a weird theme; this year, hallowzine vol. 3 was all about the hybrid and alien femininities of Ex Machina, Blade Runner 2049, Annihilation, and Under the Skin.

Most significantly, the two pieces of fiction I published were with magazines local to me and available only in print. Castle Jackal Magazine is full of horror art and writing, while Paper Moon's editions so far have focused on poetry and short fiction. I've always prioritized magazines with digital distribution, in order to theoretically reach the most readers. But in recent years I've begun to think that maybe what I really want is to reach the right readers. Hyper-local zines, music, and art are thick on the ground in my area, and I'm lucky to be connected with people making cool stuff. One of my favorite writing-related instances in 2024 was a zinefest at which I sold almost everything I brought, from print copies of my DIY zines and collections to Little Nothing, embroidered patches, and my partner's block prints. Speaking of Little Nothing, my publisher also made public a previously-subscribers-only Patreon post with a little dip into the world of limerunners and antebellum Florida!

Also in the hyper-local realm, I joined an in-person writing group. This is a new experience for me, and it's been a great one. Each of the participating writers is at a different point in their writing practice, has different goals for writing and publishing, and writes different in genres and formats. Yet what I value is that everyone seems to approach the group with the same level of seriousness. I've enjoyed engaging with the short fiction, poetry, and memoir pieces these writers bring, and practicing paying true attention to others' work. I also get to facilitate a teen writing club for my work; seeing the joy the teens take in their projects, and the skill they've already developed, is a real delight in my life.

Finally, in 2025 I'm venturing back into the world of newsletters. I'm growing weary (and wary) of my reliance on social media, when those platforms are increasingly unstable and untrustworthy. In order to cultivate engagement, stretch my essay muscles, and deliver news outside Meta's scope, I'll be trying out bimonthly letters--you can sign up now! That’s a loaded one! NGL you’re not getting a straight answer here bc there’s just too much.

This last update to Housefire /REALLY/ crossed a hurdle for me obviously. The story gets to lighten up and I’m going to be pretty soon wrapping up the main plot and getting to go back to just playing with the characters and the universe as I’ve changed everything which is super exciting. The next installment of course is already in the works, and I know it’s going to be one everyone enjoys.

And not EXACTLY a WIP, YET but I’ve quite solidly decided we’re going to have to pay Nimbus a visit real soon and I’m really looking forward to that.

I am ready to put some attention back on Things Found. That story is still resolving in my head, and I actually have chunks of it well down the line written out, and am rotating the upcoming events of Timur and Felwinter’s journey in my head. It’s been kind of set aside so that I could pour the steam into Housefire and get over that Syzygy hump but I think I can relax again on that soon.

I also have 6 more requests from January to fill that I HAVE NOT forgotten. I want to get those done so I can do that kind of thing again (probably with some rules/limits this time. Most of what’s left is naughty stuff which is FUN but smut is just too hard to write in a timely manner since most of my writing I do at WORK where I must keep things ahem, worksafe, and when I am at home I am tired or busy doing home things and I don’t get much progress made. 😩)

As an aside, I did some fast and dirty math after posting Syzygy the other day, and between Housefire, Things Found, and the various drabbles/1-shots I’ve posted, I’ve contributed close to 170,000 words to the Destiny fandom on the last 11 months 🤣😅

So when you ask me what I’m most excited about, sort of realistically, the answer is, “yes” lmao

Hi Hi! So, I have a nice long letter at the very beginning of the fic for folks who want a little bit of the backstory of how this came to be. But, I'm hella knew to this fandom because I got sucked into it by my two year old. Then, I became more into it than the two year old because sometimes that's how things done, do work in the world. I posted the first 2 chapters + the opening letter because I'll be gone for the weekend. But, expect things to move kinda slow. I'm a perpetual over-editor and I have a tiny human. So, bear with me. Basically though, I'm writing a story with Cedric as the centerpiece and the rest of the cast rotating around him. All of the characters are featured relatively prominently. But, he is the focus. I've been lurking and looking at a lot of the beautiful art. Laughing at a lot of the jokes. (Y'all are funny people.) Pre Production: Week 2 Blog 5;

Exploring Relevant Practices, pt 1

While researching for more topology methods, I stumbled upon this video titled "20 Years of Maya 3D Modeling Secrets in 20 Minutes!" by JL Mussi. This video dives into some of the essential Maya tips and tricks that I believe can highly optimise my modeling process.

1. Selection Constraints: Save Time with Border Edge Selections

While modeling, selecting borders on a model manually can be one of the most annoying thing out there. And this video showed me a more faster way of tacking that which is "The Selection Constraints" feature, which basically allows you to quickly select border edges without the hassle of manually clicking each one.

2. Reset to World Orientation: Keep Your Models Aligned

While working on projects, I often break my global rotation orientation. And I didn't know how to tackle that so my go-to response to a broken pivot used to be just eyeballing through it. But this can be particularly problematic in various different scenarios, like when working with blueprints, rigging, or preparing models for 3D printing.

The solution to this problem is that we can create a cube aligned with world space, then we can quickly snap the face of our object to the cube and then reset its orientation, and that's it!

3. Selective History Deletion: Clean Up Your Model’s History Stack

This is something that I didn't even realize was possible, but apparently, when Maya's history stack gets really messy, for example, when you're doing multiple modeling operations like extruding, beveling, or adding edge loops. We can actually delete specific parts of your history without messing with the whole model. For instance, if you extruded a face and beveled an edge, but you only want to remove the extrude and keep the bevel, you can just target and delete that extrude node in the history stack. You can do this through the Node Editor, and it helps keep your history cleaner without undoing everything you've done.

4. Redo Last Command: Speed Up Your Workflow with Menu Redo

One of Maya’s hidden gems that I discovered through this video is the Redo Last Command feature, which allows you to quickly redo any action you’ve performed in a specific menu. This differs from the usual G key for repeating the last tool you used.

To use this, simply middle-click on the menu where the last action was performed (e.g., Mesh, Edit Mesh, Shading), and it will instantly redo that action. And this is one of those things that you wouldn't know that you need until you do.

5. Continuous Edge Selection: Select Interrupted Edges

When selecting edges in Maya, one of the most annoying parts is that when I encounter poles or other disruptions, it breaks up the edge loop. But, instead of manually selecting each segment, I realised that, you can use the Select Continuous Edges feature to select a continuous range of edges in one click, bypassing poles and irregularities in the topology.

6. Vertex Face: Troubleshoot Your Models Quickly

I honestly didn’t realize how much I needed this until now, but the Vertex Face display mode in Maya is a game-changer for troubleshooting mesh issues like pinching or weird deformations. It basically breaks down your components visually while still keeping everything connected in the model. Switching to this mode helps you quickly spot problems, like misaligned faces or stray vertices, which makes fixing things like uneven extrudes so much easier. Definitely something I didn’t know would save me so much time during the debugging process!

Rigging Preparation:

Before Rigging:

Clean up the model (retopology).

Check scale & units to avoid joint placement issues.

Ensure the model faces X-axis.

Complete UV unwrapping before skinning.

Freeze transformations and ensure the mesh is at world origin.

Constraints vs. Parenting:

Parent Constraint: Acts like parenting but doesn’t change hierarchy (affects movement & rotation, but not scaling).

Maintain Offset: Keeps object positions when constraining.

Pivot Adjustments & Drawing Overrides

Move Pivot: Press D to adjust.

Customize Controller Color:

Right-click NURBS curve > Control Vertex > Adjust shape.

In Attribute Editor, enable Drawing Overrides and change color.

Set Driven Key (SDK):

Used to automate control movements (e.g., a gate opening with a slider).

Process:

Select the controller → Animation → Set Driven Key.

Define Driver (controller attribute) and Driven (affected object).

Load them into SDK, set keyframes for attribute values.

Bouncing Ball Rig:

Create NURBS controllers (one for base, one for sphere).

Parent middle controller to base controller.

Squash Deformer:

Select sphere → Deform > Nonlinear > Squash.

Adjust Low Bound (0) and High Bound if needed.

Use Set Driven Key to connect squash factor to Translate Y.

Hierarchy:

Squash handle & squash controller → Main controller → Root.

Graph Editor: Adjust keyframe tangents to linear.

Leg Rig Setup;

Create joints:

Use Skeleton > Create Joints.

Name joints (hip_JNT, knee_JNT, ankle_JNT).

Resize joints if needed (Display > Animation > Joint Size).

Controllers:

Create NURBS curves for each joint, rename (hip_CTRL, knee_CTRL, etc.).

Freeze transformations.

Parent controllers to groups (hip_GRP, knee_GRP, etc.).

Align Pivots:

Select group → Move to joint center using V (snap to point).

Constrain Controllers to Joints:

Use Parent Constraint (Maintain Offset ON).

Binding the Rig to the Mesh

Select all joints & mesh.

Skin > Bind Skin:

Bind to: Selected joints.

Max Influence: 3.

Apply.

Weight Painting: Adjust how much each joint affects the mesh.

Advanced Skeleton Plugin (For Biped Rigs):

Install Advanced Skeleton plugin.

Load Female GEO file.

Fit Joints to Character: Scale and align joints correctly.

Click Build Advanced Skeleton.

Adjust deformation settings if needed.

Final Steps

Check weight painting.

Publish rig and save separately.

Ready for animation!

PRO TIPS:

Important concepts of rig :-

Joints

Bones - when 2 joints combine

Joint chains - collective heightchy of bones from head to tail. Controls everything after the other

skinning and weight painting

forward Kinematics - Move everything forward

Inverese Kinematics - Move everything backwards

Joint orientation - Bones can have wrong rotations if this isn't done correctly.

Parenting - form of heichy connection. You assign parent object to child object.

Constrains - parent (doesn't change heirachy - translation and rotation ) , scale, point , orientation, Aim, Pole vector , Geometric

before rigging....

clean up model - don't keep in any deform

scale and unit - proper scale

model should face the right axis model (x)

UV unwrap should be complete

transformation must be frozen - zero out with freeze

Mesh should be on the world origin

Better to reference the mesh

select . freeze transformations. set 1 name as parent_cube and parent_sphere. the other should be saved as constrain_ .....

parent 2 objects - named as parent and child, child object will move with the parent, child can move individually aswell.

first select the child, press shift and hold the parent object, press p , a heirachy of the parent and child can be seen in the outliner.

A child can have 1 parent, but a parent can have more children

Light and Shadows

(Development Project 1)

For my “Light and Shadows” project, I envisioned a stormy night scene featuring a lighthouse illuminating its surroundings. I wanted to explore the dynamic interplay of light and shadows to create a dramatic and atmospheric environment.

Firstly I modelled and textured the Lighthouse and the house in Blender. I tried keeping it simple yet realistic. However, the transition from Blender to Unreal Engine proved to be far from smooth. Importing the textures of the models I created was not quite straightforward. I had to manually recreate and reassign all the textures within Unreal. While tedious, this step helped me better understand Unreal’s material editor and texture workflows.

With the lighthouse and house imported, I moved on to building the environment. Using Unreal’s landscape sculpting tools, I created a rugged, coastal terrain, adding cliffs, grass, and rocks to complete the scene and place the Foliage. Placing the lighthouse at the highest point of the scene felt symbolic, standing as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos of the storm. Once the environment was shaped, I began adding atmospheric effects like rain, clouds, and thunderclaps to bring the stormy night to life using a plugin- Dynamic weather.

A significant part of the project revolved around the lighthouse light. My original idea was to have the light rotate and illuminate the stormy surroundings as a beacon of hope. However, the lighthouse’s rotating light proved to be a major hurdle. Despite hours of tweaking, I couldn’t achieve the intensity and sweeping effect I had envisioned. On top of that, I encountered multiple rendering issues. When attempting to render cinematic clips, the meshes displayed blocky artifacts, similar to Minecraft. Other technical errors also surfaced, and I couldn’t resolve them in time. As a result, I had to screen record the scene instead of rendering it properly and it thus resulted like this.

Although I had to wrap up the project earlier than I hoped, I plan to revisit it in the future. I want to figure out the lighting issues, address rendering errors, and refine the cinematic sequences. This project showed me how much patience and persistence are needed in game design, especially when working with complex environments. Despite the setbacks, I was happy with how the environment came together. The stormy shadows, rain effects, and the stationary lighthouse glow captured the moody atmosphere I had aimed for. This experience reinforced the importance of troubleshooting and creative problem-solving in building immersive worlds.
