Royal Canadian Air Force celebrates its first Centenary
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/01/2024 - 23:07in Military
The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has reached the 100-year mark today. The beginning of the celebrations of the first centenary was marked with a ceremony in Edmonton.
As the Royal Canadian Air Force celebrates its 100º anniversary, Edmonton became the host of a moving recognition of its unwavering service to Canada. A historic air passage was carried out by the Tactical Helicopter Squadron "Goose" 408, adorning the skies above the legislative grounds of Alberta and marking the beginning of a six-month commemoration period throughout the country.

The squadron's overflight was led by the veteran pilot and current deputy commander, Major Geoff Martin. With more than a decade of experience at RCAF and a personal connection with the service arising from childhood memories of admiring aircraft with his grandfather, Martin embodies the passion and dedication that have been the hallmark of the service in the last century.
The RCAF turns 100 today! ?
Today, we celebrate a century of excellence, courage, and innovation in the RCAF. As we mark this milestone, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the incredible individuals past and present who have played a part in shaping #YourAirForce. #RCAF100pic.twitter.com/9pcNaZcGlB
— Royal Canadian Air Force (@RCAF_ARC) April 1, 2024
The long-standing mission of the RCAF: to provide air defense, search and rescue and to assist in disaster relief, remains unchanged. An example of this dedication to domestic and international aid is Martin's deployment to Iraq, where he contributed significantly to Canadian operations.
Highlighting the festivities, Lieutenant-Gov. Salma Lakhani addressed the assembly and paid tribute to the noble history of the RCAF. The day was also marked by the elevation of the Elifer of the Royal Canadian Air Force within the legislative grounds and, later, the eminent structures of Edmonton, the High Level Bridge and the Jubilee Auditoriums, were illuminated in blue to signify the celebrations of the centenary of the RCAF.
In honour of the 100th anniversary of the @RCAF_ARC, buildings around the world are illuminated with blue lights, including the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in #France. ??

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Thomas Sand, who dedicated 35 years to the RCAF, highlighted the incredible experiences he accumulated during his administration, such as tracking submarines and traveling the world, but emphasized that the most beloved aspect of the service is the unity and respect promoted among its members.
As the country continues to honor the 100-year history of the RCAF, it is evident that the spirit of duty to the nation and humanity that once formed the backbone of the Royal Canadian Air Force remains as strong today as ever.
Happy 100th birthday to @RCAF_ARC! Thank you for 100 years of air support! sic itur ad astra ('Such is the pathway to the stars') The #RoyalCanadianAirForce's incredible history:https://t.co/00V93ycniM #RCAF100 #WeTheNavypic.twitter.com/ijSp63bAxh
— Royal Canadian Navy (@RoyalCanNavy) April 1, 2024
Since its creation on April 1, 1924, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has played a key role in the history of Canada, contributing to the defense of the nation and participating in international operations. Its emergence faced significant challenges, evolving through technological advances and adapting to the changing nature of air warfare and peacekeeping.
Throughout World War II, Korea and NATO's Cold War missions, the RCAF grew in capacity and size. The integration of women and various multicultural groups in the service over time has also shaped the dynamics of the organization. Today, it operates a fleet of several aircraft, from fighters such as the CF-18 Hornet to transport aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and maritime patrol aircraft such as the CP-140 Aurora.
Happy Centennial, Royal Canadian Air Force! ???
As we celebrate 100 years of soaring through the skies, the Canadian Armed Forces extends warmest congratulations to the@RCAF_ARC on this historic milestone. #RCAF100pic.twitter.com/7yAwvhR1qy
— Canadian Armed Forces (@CanadianForces) April 1, 2024
The aerospace industry has been a critical aspect of Canada's economy, contributing significantly to research and development, production and employment. Canada's Defense Policy, "Strong, Safe, Involved", describes significant investments aimed at improving the capabilities of the RCAF. This is expected to include the acquisition of 88 advanced F-35 fighter aircraft to replace the current CF-18 fleet, increasing the country's sovereignty and NORAD's obligations. These acquisitions and technological upgrades of current assets offer indications of potential market growth in the defense aerospace sector in Canada and around the world.
Attracting skilled labor remains a challenge in the aerospace industry, with demographic aging and competition from other sectors. In a broader scope, issues such as climate change and the need for sustainable development have pressured defense organizations to consider environmental impacts on their operations and innovations. In addition, cybersecurity and the emergence of space as a contested domain indicate that the RCAF, like its allies, must evolve to face new threats that go beyond the traditional roles of aerial superiority.
100 years for the @RCAF_ARC! It has been a privilege to serve our country with amazing Canadians. I want to honor those who have served and who continue to serve in Canada and around the world over the past century. #RCAF100 pic.twitter.com/g5SUXBX78D
— Joshua Kutryk (@Astro_Kutryk) April 1, 2024
The celebrations of the centenary of the RCAF not only define a historic milestone, but also stimulate reflection on its future path in the midst of a constantly evolving industry, with new challenges and opportunities. It serves as a reminder of the commitment and sacrifice of the men and women who have served and continue to serve under its flag - a commitment that remains an integral part of Canada's security and its global partnerships.

Thanks for participating! [ Check out the results here. ]

What is this blog?
This is an ask blog for personifications of Canadian cities Edmonton and Calgary as well as a handful of their friends around the province. See brief bios below!
Please check the desktop/browser version of this blog for a more detailed vision, FAQ, and Story links among others. You're welcome to use my characters in your own works, please tag me so I can see!
My main blog is @allbeendonebefore. I go by Hapo (she/they) and I am running this blog primarily from Treaty 6 Territory (Edmonton). My background is primarily in classics, information and museum studies; I am not a historian, but I do have historical training and interest.
Ask Status: Open!
There is currently (July 2024) a backlog of 8 asks, please be patient for answers :) Sometimes I will answer an ask right away or sit on it for months, I don’t necessarily answer them in the order I receive them.
Asks without a recipient will generally be directed towards Ed and/or Cal; you can also ask me directly! Please be respectful when asking questions, especially around politically or historically sensitive issues. I will occasionally answer asks on current events, but they may already be old news by the time I get to them!
Asks are open again for the first time in over six months :)

Characters below!
Main Characters
Edmonton | Edward Murphy Masterpost | Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes Begrudging capital of the province and self-proclaimed black sheep, Ed represents an eclectic mix of blue collar oil culture and government service. When he’s not trying to escape the gravitational pull of 1980′s nostalgia for Gretzky and The Mall or snarking his way through question period at the legislature, Ed enjoys partying hard at festivals and long bike rides in the river valley.
Calgary | Calvin McCall Masterpost | Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes Largest city in the province and fourth nationally, Calvin’s youthful energy and optimism is tempered by a conservative streak and a preoccupation with being taken seriously as a major city at home and abroad. He is most famous for his annual Stampede celebrating the romantic wild west... contrary to his actual upbringing in the mild west!
Red Deer | Elaine Hartley Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes The city halfway between the provincial powerhouses, Red is either fuelling up vehicles, people, or both at once in Gasoline Alley. Maybe if people stuck around after emptying their bladders or filling their stomachs, they’d discover she has more to offer than her delicious home cooking!
Lethbridge | Lilith Sheran Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes The former financial hub of the province and former American whisky fort, Lilith has transitioned from a gritty coal mining past to the laid back lifestyle of a university city. Although she is one of Canada’s windiest cities, she rarely has a hair out of place.
Fort McMurray | Reginald “Mac” Buffalo Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes An isolated hamlet at the heart of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Athabasca tar sands, Mac is a tough, working class rig pig. Behind his massive pick up truck, corded muscles and defensive nature is a shy guy (and a big fluffy Newfoundland/husky mix dog, Patches).
Medicine Hat | Madeline Hargrave Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes A sleepy retirement community and overall ray of sunshine, Madeline usually takes a back seat in the provincial conversations and prefers to work on her own projects. Famously referred to as having “all hell for a basement”, Madeline’s wealth in natural gas and electricity continues to light her way.
Grande Prairie | Josephine Cardinal Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes A fast growing industrial city, Josephine’s hot temper and no-nonsense attitude occasionally conflicts with her romantic perception of herself. She is very proud of being a northern city with a surprising number of amenities and is more than happy to share with her neighbours.
Banff | Eleanor Crandell Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes An internationally famous mountain resort town, Eleanor is usually busy hosting and entertaining visitors from abroad (as well as Calvin every weekend). When not attending to guests, she is as down for skiing and wilderness hikes as she is for the buzzing shopping and nightlife scene.
Jasper | Jasper Swift Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes A former fur trading post turned heart of a national park, Jas tends to be a little more laid back than their counterpart in Banff but no less popular. A little quieter and wilder, Jasper’s claim to fame is their cozy cabin culture and annual Dark Sky festival.
Other Municipalities
Strathcona | Edith Garneau: Former municipality representing Edmonton’s south side and the University of Alberta campus, Edith is typically found inhaling copious amounts of cuisine on Whyte Ave or rehearsing for Fringe Fest when not plotting the downfall of the government.
Bowness | Caroline Cochrane: Former municipality representing Calgary’s northwest, Caroline represents what used to be a popular recreational spot for day-tripping Calgarians during the early 20th century. These days, she is usually trying to organize community fundraisers with themes beyond “western”.
---
St. Paul | Paula: Small town originally founded as a Metis settlement, Paula’s current major attraction is the centennial UFO landing pad (with accompanying UFO Hotline, naturally.)
Vulcan | ? : Small town originally named for the Roman god of the forge, now capitalizing on their reputation as Star Trek Capital of Canada for obvious reasons.
Drumheller | ? : Small town in the Alberta badlands famous the world over for fantastic fossil finds, many of which are housed at the nearby Royal Tyrell Museum.
Cardston | Orson Card: Small town founded around one of the most northern locations of Mormon Temples in North America. Orson is a polite and sincere (if unsettlingly so) fellow who helped build southern Alberta’s irrigation system.
Sherwood Park | Marion Clover: A bedroom community east of Edmonton and one of the largest population centres in the province despite technically being a hamlet. Marion is a refined lady (pun intended) that supervises one of Western Canada’s biggest industrial zones.
---
Missing a character? While my goal is not to personify every municipality in the province, I will occasionally reference others. Keep your eyes peeled!

All this positive energy inspired us to write new music quickly, and here is the first song of the new music waiting for you! We hope you enjoy it! Thank you so much for your support! In memory of Jina Mahsa Amini and for all the brave people everywhere else in the world who fight for human rights. Human rights are universal. But they are not respected everywhere, and where they are, they can be taken away again. That means that we all need to be constantly defending them, and we need to be standing together with all people in the world for that. Goldie Returns Triumphant with 'The Actress' EP: A Journey of Strength and Authenticity
Tumblr media
“This song marks my triumphant return,” Goldie declares. “I’ve grown, conquered my demons, and now I stand with confidence. It’s a bold statement to men and anyone who thinks they can control me. I used to say I was a great actress because I spent my life pretending. Now, I’m in charge. I am The Actress, and everyone else is just an extra in my movie.” Raised on the music of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, Goldie’s first performance was at age five, using her family’s junkyard business as a rehearsal space. She signed her first record deal with Interscope Records at 21. After a series of label changes and aliases, Goldie returned to her roots in Nova Scotia, re-establishing herself as an alt-country star with a flair for 1950s and 1960s Americana. Starting with just her name and her stories, she gained over 11 million streams in two years as an independent artist. Her new music era has received praise from Zane Lowe and Elton John, leading to bookings at iconic festivals like Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. She was also hand-picked by Orville Peck for an opening slot on his North American tour this year. Her EPs, "The Cowboy Gangster Politician" (2022) and "Emerald Year" (2023), reflect her small-town upbringing on Cape Breton Island and her genuine experiences as a young star in Hollywood. Her upcoming EP, "The Actress," promises to be her best release yet. The writing process has taken her on a journey of integrity, purity, vulnerability, and a healing return to herself. These are Goldie Boutilier’s true stories of power struggles, career control, exploitation by the industry, sacrifices for her dreams, and finding the strength to persevere. Catch Goldie live this summer supporting Orville Peck on his Stampede Tour, as well as at Lollapalooza, Sommo, Ohana Festival, and Austin City Limits. More dates will be added, and more music from "The Actress" EP will follow soon.   GOLDIE:  SUMMER 2024 TOUR DATES June 29 - Asbury Park, NJ * @ Stone Pony Summer Stage June 30 - Washington, DC * @ Anthem July 1 - Lewiston, NY * @ ARTPARK July 3 - Toronto, ON * @ Budweiser Stage July 7 - Victoria, BC @ Phillips Backyard Music Festival July 8 - Vancouver, BC * @ Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre July 10 - Edmonton, AB * @ Midway Music Hall July 11 - Edmonton, AB * @ Midway Music Hall July 12 - Calgary, AB @ Calgary Stampede Park Aug 1 - Chicago, IL – Lollapalooza @ Grant Park Aug 2 - Chicago, IL – House of Blues (Official Lollapalooza Aftershow) Aug 24 - Nashville, TN – Orville Peck’s Rodeo Sep 13 - Cavendish, PEI - Sommo Festival Sep 28 - Dana Point, CA - Ohana Festival Oct 5, 12 - Austin, TX - Austin City Limits * with Orville Peck on his Stampede Tour Read the full article

IIHF World Junior Championship 2022 to be played in August
After being postponed in December because of COVID-19 concerns, the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championships will be held this summer.
Tumblr media
“It will take place in the middle August in Alberta (Canada),” IIHF President Luc Tardif stated Thursday at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. “It will not be the same competition as in December, so we won’t know what happened.”
After four days of play, the tournament for players younger than 20 started in Edmonton and Red Deer (Alberta) on Dec 26th. However, it was cancelled after Russia, Czechia, and the United States each forfeited a preliminary round game after their players tested positive for COVID-19.
Tardif stated that the 2022 WJC could have the same rosters as December’s, regardless of whether the players turn 20 prior to the new tournament.
Tardif stated that they are in talks with all parties and are working out details. It will take place after the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. It will be a hockey festival, and the teams are eager to participate.“
The 2022 Hlinka Gruetzky Cup for players under 18 is set for the first week of August in Edmonton and Red Deer.
The top five NHL Draft picks in 2021 would be eligible to play if the rosters are unchanged. Owen Power, the No. 1 defenseman, was selected by the Buffalo Sabres. 1 by the Buffalo Sabres and forwards Mason McTavish selected No. 3 by the Anaheim Ducks and Kent Johnson, who were selected No. 5 were included by the Columbus Blue Jackets on the Canada roster at the beginning of the tournament in December.
Matty Beniers, forward, was the No. The Seattle Kraken selected Matty Beniers as the No. 2 pick, while Luke Hughes, the No. 3 pick, was chosen by the defenseman. 4 were selected by the New Jersey Devils and were placed on the United States roster.
Jake Sanderson, the No. 5 defenseman in the 2020 NHL Draft was selected. The Senators selected Jake Sanderson as No. 5 in the 2020 NHL Draft. He was the captain of the United States, which is trying to win back-to-back championships for the first-time. Canada was the last to achieve this feat, having won five consecutive titles in 2009.
The United States will play in the preliminary round of Group B along with Russia, Sweden and Slovakia. Canada will be playing preliminary games in Group B with Germany, Czechia and Austria.
The IIHF will reinstate the WJC relegation round. It was removed for the 2022 WJC. Belarus will replace the loser in the best-of-3 round of relegation at the 2023 tournament. It is scheduled for December 26 through January 5.
Belarus is promoted to the top tournament as the winner of the 2022 WJC Division I Group A tournament.
Because the 2021 tournament, also scheduled for Edmonton and Red Deer in 2021, was not in Edmonton, the 2022 tournament was held here.
