Inform 7 Basics: repeating through #2

I thought we could talk about repeating through some more. Last time, we used it to apply a property, and then modified text output based on that property.

This time, we'll do something physical in the world. We'll be locking and unlocking doors. If you want to do stuff with locking and unlocking doors, you'll probably want to use an extension. The most recent version is installed with Inform 10.1.2, so it's easy to use. Just add this line to your project:

We can explore its functionality next time. For now, let's just make it part of the project.

Let's say we had a bunch of doors:

edoor is a locked door. it is east of lab and west of eastlab. wdoor is a locked door. it is west of lab and east of westlab. ndoor is a locked door. it is north of lab and south of northlab. sdoor is a locked door. it is south of lab and north of southlab.

Note that I say they are locked; Locksmith makes it very easy for us to manage locked doors.

Now, we could make keys for each door and have the player unlock them that way. But what's the fun in that? Let's use powerful magic to unlock them. First, we'll create an action:

unbolting is an action applying to nothing. understand "unbolt" as unbolting.

OK. Now we just need to do something with our new action. Like last time, we'll repeat through a kind:

As a reminder, "portal" is a term I chose. You can pick whatever you like. "Doors," on the other hand is a kind of thing. With this rule, Inform will walk through its internal list of things that are doors. Let's unlock every door in the game's world (note that we could check just a geographic region, or add other conditions):

Now, that'll do what we've asked, but it's kind of bare bones, isn't it? We should give the player some feedback. First of all, let's let them know if the action was successful:

say "[line break][tab][portal]: [if portal is unlocked]unlocked[otherwise if portal is locked]locked[end if].[no line break]";

Whew, that's a lot to take in! First of all, we want it to look decent. In lists, line breaks print better at the beginning of a line, rather than at the end of another. [portal] is a text substitution. It will print the name of whichever portal the "repeat through" operation is currently working on. Next, a conditional. Print "locked" if the door is "locked" and "unlocked" if it isn't.

Did you notice the [tab] substitution? That's there because I wanted to indent. I made the [tab] myself. Here's the substitution:

to say tab: say "[fixed letter spacing] [variable letter spacing]"

If you're going to print spaces, it's always better to switch to fixed letter spacing. That way, everything will look consistent.

Here's the whole thing:
