Black Mount Rise - Sundown Boulevard - Review

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Vier Jahre lang war es mehr oder weniger ruhig um Black Mount Rise. Von der damaligen Besetzung ist gerade noch Mastermind und Cheflenker Yannick Schmidt übriggeblieben. Mit seinen neuen Mitmusikern hat er sich nun also an den Nachfolger von “Curtains Falling” gemacht und zeigt, dass der Vorhang noch lange nicht gefallen ist. Bleischwer eröffnet ein Riff den Einsteiger “We Are Sinking” und es geht gleich richtig ans Gemüt. Leichte Kost waren sie noch nie die Songs von Black Mount Rise, hier geht es aber schon ganz schön düster ans Eingemachte. Gleich beim ersten Song ist mir klar, diese Klangwelten muss man sich mehr als einmal reinziehen. Nach mehrmaligem Hören eröffnen sich aber musikalische Dimensionen, die ich mittlerweile nur noch mit geschlossenen Augen durchlebe. Das Gefühl dabei kommt noch um einiges intensiver daher und berührt mich als Hörer ganz tief im Innern. Bereits der zweite Song “Silence & Disarray “wirkt dann aber schon um einiges zerbrechlicher, was vor allem der Stimme zuzuschreiben ist. In der Bridge, so knapp nach einer Minute Spielzeit, erinnert es mich schon fast ein wenig an Dave Gahan von Depeche Mode. Dann im Refrain merkt man dann förmlich, wie es Yannick beim Einsingen der Silben schon fast zerreisst, hier werden Gefühle transportiert, die ganz schon tief gehen, wenn man sich der Musik von Black Mount Rise öffnet.

Zum nächsten Song “Sundown Boulevard” drehte die Band in Eigenregie einen Videoclip und er wurde bereits als erste Single veröffentlicht. Der Song selbst repräsentiert die Band ganz gut. Ein richtig geiles hartes Riff und ein recht eingängiger Refrain. Bei “Beautiful Mistake” schlägt das Gefühlsbarometer wieder um. Akustische Gitarren begleiten die weinerliche Stimme, welche auf der Suche ist zu bleiben. Auch für diesen Song wurde ein Videoclip gedreht und ist ein ganz schönes Kontrastprogramm zur ersten Auskopplung. Gegen Ende gewinnt “Beautiful Mistake” dann an Intensität und Kraft, ohne an der Wirkung zu verlieren.

Das Wechselbad der Gefühle geht bei allen Songs so weiter, dabei haben sie die Reihenfolge für die Songs auf dem Longplay richtig gut hingekriegt, so dass nie Langeweile aufkommt. Ich finde dies bei diesem tonnenschweren Album auch recht wichtig, es würde einem sonst erschlagen. Dass in der Mitte platzierte “All This Time” ist dann wieder ein kleiner Juwel an Musikalität. Hier greifen die Vier Musiker ganz tief in die Stilkiste und bedienen sich kunterbunt. Dank Yannick’s Stimme ist es aber immer noch unverkennbar Black Mount Rise.

Auch Gitarren müssen nicht immer die Spielmacher sein. Bei “In That Respect” bekommen Bass und Schlagzeug enorm viel Platz während den Strophen, füllen diesen jedoch nur soweit nötig aus, songdienlich sag ich dem, und verleitet zum Träumen bevor die Gitarren mich aufwecken. Das Album geht spannend weiter und bietet mit insgesamt dreizehn Songs einiges an Material bis dann mit “Bristol Paper Town” erneut ein ruhiger Höhepunkt aus den Boxen erklingt. Wunderschöne Harmonien lassen die Schwere der vorangegangenen Songs ein wenig verdauen und verschnaufen.

Wie bereits beim Vorgänger haben Black Mount Rise auch dem aktuellen Album einen Gast eingeladen. Produzent Eike Freese, selber Musiker, kam beim Song “We Might Be Wrong” zu Ehren. “Indifference” markiert den Rausschmeisser, ein Song der mich gegen den Schluss auch ein wenig an Led Zeppelin erinnert. In der Summe ist “Sundown Boulevard” ein richtig gutes Album geworden. Hart und düster zugleich mit genügend Ausflügen zu emotional zerbrechlichen Songkonstrukten. Es ist bestimmt kein Album um es mal so ganz nebenbei zu konsumieren. Damit würde man Black Mount Rise Unrecht tun. Bei diesem Album braucht es Zeit um es auf sich wirken zu lassen. Wer sich diese Zeit jedoch nimmt, bekommt ein Album, bei welchem man anmerkt wieviel Zeit in die Songs investiert wurde. Deshalb vor allem meinen Dank an Black Mount Rise, sie haben mir das Album bereits anfangs Januar zukommen lassen, so konnte ich meine Zeit auf dem Sundown Boulevard verbringen, ohne der Schwere zu erliegen. Aktuell ist die Band an der Tourvorbereitung, sobald ich die Daten vorliegen habe, werden diese natürlich auch in den Konzertkalender aufgenommen. Album of the day: XXX-Three Decades in Metal, the first "project" album by Kai Hansen, one of the most influential guitarists and singers to emerge from Germany during the first part of the 80s; first with ground-breaking band HELLOWEEN (of which Hansen is one of the founding members) and later with GAMMA RAY, one of the bands that contributed to define the genre power metal, bringing it to generation of devoted fans worldwide since its first album. Endseeker detail new album The Harvest, premiere video for "Spiritual Euphoria"

When Rezet´s most recent album Truth in Between effectively turned out to be a commercial nonstarter due to a certain virus, northern Germany´s finest in thrash quickly had to separate the wheat from the chaff… albeit not so much voluntarily as out of necessity. After amicably separating from guitarist Heiko Musolf and bass player Bjarne Otto, main composer, guitarist and singer Ricky Wagner shortly wondered whether he should put the band to rest but then decided differently. Contrarily, he set out to leave nothing to coincidence anymore, opting for a “no compromise” and do-it-yourself approach by continuing Rezet without label-support for the time being. This resolve triggered a burst of creativity, resulting in New World Murder, a four-track EP both revisiting the group´s roots as well as hinting towards a brighter future. Wagner and drummer Bastian “attt” Santen recruited four-stringer Lorenz Kandolf and second guitarist Jan-Erik Fischer to self-record three new songs as well as a flamboyant cover of Deep Purple´s proto metal classic ´Fireball´.

The material was then mixed and mastered by the band´s trusted sound engineer Eike Freese (amongst others Heaven Shall Burn, Helloween and, indeed, Deep Purple), with ´The Devil´s Bride´ being a perfect opener, blending acute Motörhead vibes with Ricky´s charismatic snarl and an almost Annihilator-esque playfulness, highlight the razor-sharp precision of Rezet´s new line-up. The rhythmically diverse, subtly melodic ´Dead End Walking´ is barbed with one of the catchiest riffs you may hear in 2022 and topped of by an atmospheric instrumental bridge whereas staccato earworm ´Alien Noises´ – featuring guest vocals by none other than German thrash pioneers Destruction´s front man Schmier – hits home even faster and will grace the soundtrack of the movie “Total Thrash”.

So there you have it: four smashers that sounds unpredictable and familiar alike, reflecting Ricky´s hands-on attitude. “In a way,” he concludes, “I see New World Murder in the spirit of Metallica, who also keep setting new goals for themselves, shedding their skin on a constant basis. Eventually, we reclaimed our joy in what we do simply by doing what we love without fulfilling expectations.” Old is the new New – so watch out and perk your ears for “The Great Rezet”!

Black Mount Rise meldet sich zurück

Nach langem turbulentem Werdegang zum zweiten Album meldet sich Black Mount Rise zurück. Ihr Debüt Album Curtains Falls sorgte vor knapp vier Jahren bei mir für einiges an Aufregung. Da hatte sich doch tatsächlich eine Schweizer Band die Dienste von Anette Olzon gesichert und mit ihr den Song Apart & Astray eingespielt. Als grosser Nightwish und Anette Fan,  durfte ich mir diesen Song nicht entgehen lassen und entdeckte so ganz nebenbei eine neue grossartige Band.

Wie eingangs geschrieben, war in den letzten Jahren mächtig was los im Lager von Black Mount Rise. So ist von der damaligen Besetzung nur noch Gründer und Kopf der Band, Yannick Schmidt übrig geblieben. Neu in der Band sind an der Gitarre Sandro Schmutz (Six Pack), am Bass Sven Cotting (Five Past Eight) und am Schlagzeug Adrian Mahler (Perspective Shifts). Seit Ende 2018 wurde am Nachfolgealbum gewerkelt, welches am 28.02.2020 seinen Release feiern wird im Nouveau Monde in Fribourg. Für die Aufnahmen griff man auf altbewährtes zurück und ging erneut nach Hamburg zu Eike Freese, selber Sänger und Gitarrist bei der zur Zeit im Winterschlaf liegenden Dark Age (hat übrigens auch auf Kai Hansens XXX-Three Decades in Metal Gitarre gespielt).

Wie Black Mount Rise in der Konzertankündigung zum Release schreiben, präsentieren sie mit ihrer neuen Scheibe ein Orchester an Alternative Rock, mitreissend wie kontrastreich, nackenschmerzend wie melancholisch. Über elysische Höhenflüge hinweg in die Tiefen dunkler Wogen nimmt einen das Quartett auf eine verzerrt vertonte Odyssee der Nostalgie mit und zeigt, wie Alternative Rock wirklich zu klingen hat. Krachende und schnittige Riffs verschmelzen mit hymnenartigem Gesang zu einem hochprozentigen und dynamischen Rockgemisch, das so schnell keiner vergisst. Mit ihrem neuen Album ist Black Mount Rise zurück und dies hungriger denn je.

Das Album wird wie erwähnt Ende Februar erscheinen als kleiner Vorgeschmack hat die Band aber vor Wochenfrist bereits die erste Single mit zugehörendem Video zum Song Sundown Boulevard veröffentlicht. Nach Durchhören des Songs freu ich mich jetzt schon auf das Album. Black Mount Rise haben sich wirklich rund erneuert und kommen mit neuer Härte zurück und präsentieren hier schon mal ein messerscharfes Riffmonster.

Ünnep vagyon… Nem, nem a Szent Kereszt megtalálására gondoltam (bár arra is nyugodtan gondolhattam volna, és gondoltam is – nesze neked, szekularizált Európa!), hanem az új Myrath lemez megjelenésére hosszú, három éves várakozás után. Ezt a tunéziai proggerek jól elhúzták, az ígéretekhez híven minimum fél évet csúszott a kiadás, de egyáltalán nem bánom, mert az eredmény nem más, mint karrierjük legjobban megdörrenő, hangzásban csúcskategóriás albuma. A fölvételeket három helyen (Németország, Tunézia és Franciaország) és három producer-hangmérnökkel (Kévin Codfert, Eike Freese, Jens Bogren) végezték.

A tavalyi pozsonyi koncerten már volt alkalmunk meghallgatni pár új nótát, és bevallom, akkor nem fogtam padlót. Volt bennem némi félsz, hogy tovább poposodik az együttes eredendően innovatív, progos muzsikája. Szerencsére a “Shehili” nem ennek a lenyomata, jóllehet a bivaly erős kezdés után a lemez második fele kicsit megtorpanni látszik. Látszik, mondom, mert valójában egy-két kivétellel ezek a lassabb és szellősebb tételek a lemez leginvenciózusabb dalai. De erre majd visszatérünk!

Nem titok, hogy régi kedvencemmel és blogunk alapihletével, a Myrath-tal szemben az utóbbi években voltak bennem ellenérzések. Az ellenérzés talán túl erős kifejezés, inkább tartózkodó voltam, mert nem tudtam 100%-ig azonosulni a sajátos stílusuk egyébként teljesen érthető és szerves fejlődésének irányával. Egyre kevesebb lett a progresszivitás és egyre több a szinte mindent uraló vonós háttér. Ez lényegében most sem változott, de Malek Ben Arbia gitáros riffjei még sohasem haraptak ennyire és szólóban is érezhetően bátrabb. Egyedül Elyes Bouchoucha billentyűs szürke eminenciás szerepbe szorulását nem sikerült visszafordítani. Számomra érthetetlen, hogy miért nem használják ki, hogy neki is bazi jó hangja van; Zaher Zorgati ugyan világklasszis, de sokat dobna a dinamikán egy kis “adok-kapok”. A billentyűk –  főleg a szinte folyamatos vonós háttér miatt –  gyakorlatilag minimális szerepet kapnak (az akkord-kíséreten túl), pedig a lemez legnagyobb dalában, a “Darkness Arise”-ban olyan jól esik az a nyúlfarknyi Hammond-szóló! Az olasz DGM-ből ismert Mularoni-Casali-féle duettek összességében szerintem jótékonyan hatnának a Myrath muzsikájára.

Az mindenképpen újdonság, hogy ha rövid időre is, de a “Monster In My Closet”-ben Ben Arbia megvillant egy kis dzsentes reszelést, sőt a lemezen akad egy feldolgozás is: a marokkói Les Frères Mégri egy 1972-es slágere (Lili Twil). Ezen a ponton talán túlságosan összetorlódnak a merengősebb dalok, s ezen nem segít az én ízlésemnek túlságosan lineáris, popos “No Holding Back”, ami számomra egyértelműen a leggyöngébb láncszem az albumon. Szerencsére nem kis vigasztalást nyújt a már említett “Darkness Arise”, ami végre egyértelmű visszautalás az első lemez elsöprő, SymphonyX-szerű vérbőségéhez. Alighanem az év dala!

Azt kell mondjam, hogy a “Shehili” a Myrath eddigi karrierjének legjobb albuma, még úgy is, hogy a mai napig elfogult vagyok a debütációval szemben. Nekem úgy tűnik, hogy ezzel az anyaggal fölértek a csúcsra: a részletgazdagság, a hangzás, a produkció, az összeért keleti ízek, a zenészek közötti összhang és egyensúly, a kompozíciós képességek… gyakorlatilag minden passzol. Gyanús, hogy az év végi toplistán ott lesz az első három között!

Since 2015, the name ENDSEEKER has stood for the finest Swedish-styled death metal from Hamburg, Germany. It's hard as a fist and uncompromising — like binge drinking on St. Pauli — but with a big chunk of heart and soul to it. Metal Blade and ENDSEEKER are both excited to announce the signing of a multiple album deal. Am 16. April werden Endseeker ihr neues Album Mount Carcass via Metal Blade Records veröffentlichen. Einen ersten Eindruck vom Album könnt ihr durch das Video zur ersten Single “Unholy Rites” (Regie führte hierbei Endseeker-Gitarrist Ben Liepelt) gewinnen: metalblade.com/endseeker – dort kann Mount Carcass in den nachstehenden Formaten vorbestellt werden:

Endseeker dazu: “Wir haben all den Frust und die Verzweiflung über die abgesagten Shows und die ganze Misere, die Covid über uns alle gebracht hat, genommen und in einen Haufen geradliniger, kraftvoller Songs geschmiedet, die uns durch das Jahr 2020 begleitet haben und die wir nun mit dem Rest der Welt teilen werden. ‘Mount Carcass’ ist unsere fokussierteste und auf gewisse Art und Weise auch aggressivste Platte, die wir bislang aufgenommen haben. Dabei ist ‚Unholy Rites’ mit seinem Zombie-Vibe der perfekte Opener für dieses neue Kapitel in der Geschichte Endseekers! Natürlich würden wir dieses Kapitel gerne mit unseren Fans angehen, aber leider wird es diesmal keine ausverkaufte Releseashow geben, so wie noch letztes mal. Trotzdem werden wir uns in das Knust begeben, um am 18. April einen speziellen Livestream-Event (weitere Details dazu in Kürze) mit euch zumindest virtuell zu feiern. Kommt und feiert mit uns!”

Endseeker, die nicht nur zu einer der führenden deutschen Death-Metal-Bands geworden sind, sondern sich auch auf das gesamte Genre bezogen rasch nach vorne gekämpft haben, stürmen mit Mount Carcass zurück in die Schlacht. Nach Flesh Hammer Prophecy (2017) und dem atemberaubenden The Harvest (2019) stand die Band vor der schwierigen Aufgabe, noch einen drauf zu setzen, doch es ist ihr gelungen, einen optimierten, leistungsstarken Nachfolger vorzulegen, der die Messlatte noch höher anlegt.

Wie seine beiden Vorgänger wurde Mount Carcass von Eike Freese in den Chameleon Studios in Hamburg aufgenommen, produziert, gemischt und gemastert. “Die Produktion eines Albums mit Eike fühlt sich immer wie zuhause an und es war wieder eine Freude, mit ihm zusammenzuarbeiten. Eike hat den Geist der Platte voll und ganz gespürt und das Material dergestalt lebendig gemacht, dass wir glauben, dass dies unsere beste Produktion bisher ist. Es war eine schwierige Aufgabe, alles in Hinblick auf die Pandemie-Einschränkungen zu planen und durchzuziehen, aber wir haben es geschafft und alle Fristen eingehalten. Wir könnten mit dem Ergebnis kaum zufriedener sein.”

Durch diesen Prozess wurde klar, dass sie recht simple Songs wollten, quasi sogar mit einem “Punk/Crust-Feeling. Die Stücke sind ziemlich auf den Kern reduziert und von allem Ballast befreit. Jeder Part und jedes Riff hat eine Bedeutung, statt das Ganze unnötig auszudehnen. Das Album klingt aber auch sehr melodisch. Es gibt eine Reihe sehr starker Gitarren- und Gesangs-Hooks, die dir echt tagelang nicht aus dem Kopf gehen. Es ist viel einfacher und wahrscheinlich leichter zu hören als The Harvest oder Flesh Hammer Prophecy, hat aber gleichzeitig eine sehr spontane, lebhafte Aura und wirkt viel persönlicher.” Insgesamt haben Endseeker ein halbes Jahr damit verbracht, das Album fertigzustellen – ein sehr unterhaltsamer Prozess, bei dem alle Beteiligten mehr als je zuvor in alle Aspekte der Songs involviert waren. Um das Genre im Jahr 2021 frisch zu halten, konzentrierten sie sich auf die Produktion, hatten nur einen Hauch von Old-School-Vibe, um ihren Wurzeln treu zu bleiben, und versteiften sich nicht zu sehr auf Songwriting nach dem Muster des schwedischen Death Metal, das sie zuvor gewählt hatten. Stattdessen ließ man auch andere Einflüsse zu. “Man kann alle möglichen Sachen hören, die von Bands wie Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, Slayer, Dissection, Gorefest usw. inspiriert sind. Wir stehen auf so viele verschiedene Bands, und irgendwie trägt ein bisschen von all dem immer wieder zu unserer Musik bei.”
