4 Key Considerations When Selecting an Elder Care Lawyer in Florida
Are you looking for helpful tips to make sure your elderly loved ones get the right legal help in Florida? Elder law can be tricky, so it's important to find a lawyer who can protect your family and their rights. Here are four important things to think about when picking an elder care attorney Florida:
Specialization and Experience:
Look for a lawyer who specializes in elder law and has a good track record. They should know about things like Medicaid planning, estate planning, guardianship, and long-term care. Experienced lawyers can give you the best advice for your family's needs.
Tumblr media
Reputation and Qualifications:
Check out what other people say about the lawyer and make sure they're qualified. You can ask past clients for feedback and see if the lawyer is a member of respected groups like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). Also, make sure they have a valid license in Florida and haven't gotten into any trouble.
Personalized Approach:
Find a lawyer who listens to you and treats you like an individual. They should understand what you need and explain things clearly. Look for someone who cares about your family's well-being and works with you to find the best solutions.
Availability and Communication:
Pick a lawyer who is easy to reach and keeps you updated on your case. You should feel comfortable asking questions and getting updates whenever you need them. Good communication helps build trust and makes sure everyone is on the same page.
Conclusion
By considering these four simple points, you can find a reliable elder care attorney Florida who will look after your family's best interests. Don't hesitate to get expert advice to make sure your loved ones are taken care of.

The F Word
I'm an elder millennial and I've been in LDS/Mormon online spaces since I was a teenager. Since 2007. Sixteen years. That's almost as long as some of you have been alive. And there's something I've never talked about before that I want to explain to those of you who need to hear it. And you need to stick around for THE WHOLE THING not to misunderstand what I'm going to say.
The vast majority of you end up okay. You'll make it. You'll figure out your happiness and embrace it fully, and it'll all work out. You'll be okay. I care about you all tremendously, but I've seen your stories play out enough times that I know how it ends. If we can keep you from yeeting off the mortal coil prematurely, you'll be just fine.
There is one group this isn't true for. They're the ones I worry about the most every time I see them: the trad wife cohort. The women who have already decided that their only plan for their future is to get married, have an undetermined number of children, and leave everything after that as a giant question mark, to be decided for them by other people's choices.
I'm the only LDS person in my family. I come from a family with three generations of divorced/separated women. To be financially independent enough to take care of myself was instilled in me from birth. Protect yourself and your financial freedom from abusive men, from men who do not have your best interest anywhere near their thoughts.
That's what I learned from watching my mother work herself to the bone to pay for my father's attorney from the constant legal trouble that alcoholism, drugs, and nonsense behavior from untreated mental illness brought upon us. There were times we didn't have food, but there was always a case of beer in the refrigerator. That's what I learned from my grandmother, who divorced her husband at a time when that was unheard of because he abused her. That was what I learned from not one, but two great-grandmothers who, as southern women with all of the cultural baggage it entailed, left their husbands and lived on their own rather than putting up with disrespectful behavior from the men they married. Women who believed that it is better to be alone than with any man who doesn't respect you.
This is my backstory, my lore, if you will. And I swore I would honor it by never putting myself anywhere near situations that looked like these. To be financially dependent on any man, no matter how kind and generous, was something I never wanted for myself. I wanted my own job, my own money, the ability to travel, to do as I pleased. I wanted financial freedom, the security of knowing I would always be able to take care of myself AND him AND our children if it ever came down to that.
That's not the life I have. In all but name only, I'm a trad wife. Chronic illness and disabilities have made it so I cannot work. I am fully financially dependent on my husband, and every effort I have made to change my situation has come at great financial expense, as well as compromising my physical and mental health. I've had to let go of the life I wanted for myself because I've never found any employer who was willing to give me the accommodations I need to accomplish even a fraction of my goals. And even if they did, it's impossible for me to work enough hours for me to ever achieve them.
I'm a trad wife, not by choice, but out of necessity. And it scares me every day.
If my husband dies in an accident, or a mass shooting? If he becomes disabled? If he ever becomes as sick as I am, or worse? What will we do? We have plans for this. We have multiple retirement accounts, including one in my own name, that he puts money into. He sees my situation, understands it, and prioritizes it in how he manages our finances. But if it were to happen today, tomorrow, any time before we both can retire, we're screwed. Shit Creek, no paddle.
If he leaves me? If I ever have to leave him? How will I support myself? Honestly, I don't know. I don't have an answer to that question. It scares me more than I can articulate. I hope I never have to find out because I'm too disabled to take care of myself. That's the only thing I know.
There are too many women who are far too eager to put themselves into this place of financial insecurity and precarity. They don't even realize how dangerous that path is, for them and for their children, to have nothing that truly belongs to you. Not really. Not if the money that paid for it wasn't yours. Not when everything you treasure and recognize as the life you want has his name on it.
Being a trad wife is built on an agreement of mutual exploitation. In exchange for providing unpaid, undocumented labor, your spouse has agreed to pay all of your expenses indefinitely into the future. If this were a job, you would never agree to those terms. Trad wives don't understand that when it comes to marriage, however, they're jumping into that exact situation head first.
All of this to say: I'm not morally or ideologically opposed to anyone being a house wife or SAHM. I understand EXACTLY what happens to women to make that a necessity. I don't judge anyone who ends up in that position, either by choice or by force. But I'm not going to let anyone go into or remain in that situation blindly, having never once thought about how to finance the life they're dreaming about. I'm not going to let anyone walk through life somehow thinking that everything is supposed to magically work out for them like some sort of fairy tale. That's not how the world works. That not how life works. And I hate the thought that the first time all of this occurs to someone is when their life comes crashing down around them.
If "feminism" is the dirtiest word you know, you're not in any kind of position to advocate for yourself. If you don't see yourself as your husband's equal (which is what feminism, by definition, HAS to mean), how could you even begin to negotiate for yourself in a divorce, a job interview after being out of the workplace for 10+ years, or to family who you'll be reliant upon to get you back on your feet? If you don't even have the courage to say you deserve to be treated like an equal in society when everything is going to plan, how would you do it from the floor with the wind knocked out of you?
Not as long as "feminism" is the dirtiest word they know.
I'm not here to argue about the superiority of trad wives OR working wives. I'm not here to fight for anything but UBI so we can all exist in a more secure financial state, independent of individual circumstances. And I'm definitely not here to scare you.
I'm simply here as the person you will inevitably be turning to in that moment of crisis, where faith and devotion fall short of giving you everything you wanted in life. I'll be the one with the bottle of water and saying "You are brilliant and strong. You can figure this out." I'll also be the one nodding in agreement that your husband took for granted all the love and labor you gave to him, purely because he was socialized to think he has a right to do that to you. No, I don't think you're crazy. No, I don't think you're asking too much. YES, YOU NEED A LAWYER FOR YOUR CHILD SUPPORT CASE. I'll be there for all of it, to say all of the things to you that you can't imagine ever needing when you say "all I want is to be a trad wife."
How do I know? Because I've been doing it for sixteen years now with people who sounded just like you do now. In person and online. In public and in private. With friends and strangers. I've never had the luxury of being anything but a feminist, an advocate for women they don't even realize they need, that they don't (and won't!) have the vocabulary to ask for.

Raising my hand for a smutty version of "summer storms", with whichever ship you like. Surprise me.
Summer Stories
AN: Hope you like the surprise - I enjoyed writing this a lot!
Prompt: Summer storms | Manwë x Eönwë (Lords of Ilmarin) Synopsis: Eönwë takes care of himself during a summer storm. Manwë decides to help. Warnings: Smut
A storm is approaching.
Eönwë's wings twitch in anticipation as he removes his robes and makes himself comfortable on his bed. The wind is slowly picking up speed, cooling and caressing his naked skin, still sweaty from another day of training in the summer heat.
He loves storms. The sound of rain, the lightning and thunder, the scent of petrichor, the way his lord's usually gentle element shows its true might. It calms and excites him at the same time, like a power greater than himself tugging on invisible strings attached to his very ëala, drawing him in.
Eönwë lies on his back and waits. He will rest well tonight, he already knows, once he falls asleep in the storm's wild embrace. But it's too early for that still; like the heavy clouds swirling around Taniquetil's peak, he too feels pressure building up inside him and needs relief. His right hand instinctively reaches between his legs and finds his cock hardening in anticipation, demanding attention. Sometimes he forgets how long it has been since he's enjoyed the touch of a lover or even his own, he thinks – and not for the first time.
He won't rush it today, Eönwë decides, he'll simply indulge – the storm outside the palace, the warmth within his fána, the electrifying sensation coursing through him just as he hears the first thunder. His eyes close, and his lips part to release a soft noise of pleasure.
Before he can even begin to conjure up the fantasy of a lover tending to him instead, he feels a rush of wind, then a warm embrace. Manwë pulls him onto his lap with ease, watching as his legs fall open, and places his hand on top of his.
"I see you enjoy my storms," he says and nuzzles the Maia's neck. "As do I."
"My lord..." Despite being naked and touching himself in front of the Elder King, Eönwë can't bring himself to feel shame, especially not while Manwë is holding him like this. Perhaps he'll even receive another reward for his loyal service.
"Please," he begs quietly, hips bucking into his hand for emphasis.
Manwë gently guides it away from his cock to wrap his own around it. "Of course, my pretty little bird. You know I love taking care of you."
And he does. Eönwë keeps his eyes closed and lies still, happy to relinquish control and let his lord toy with his fána as he pleases. Manwë takes his time while they listen to the storm outside, stroking his cock and caressing his sensitive wings; his ëala sings in delight upon witnessing his proud herald surrendering to him so faithfully.
Eönwë feels his fána tensing when he nears his peak and opens his mouth to beg, but all he manages are small moans and whines. Yet Manwë knows he's close and resumes pleasuring him with calm persistence, not slowing down until his back arches and white liquid spills all over his hand.
"Well done," he praises and moves it to the Maia's lips. Obeying his lord's silent order without hesitation, Eönwë diligently begins to lick him clean.
"Should I serve you now?" he asks, opening his eyes to look up at the Vala. Tasting his own release was strangely arousing, but he knows it could never compare to being filled with the Elder King's glory - in whichever way he's allowed to receive it.
"Not yet." Manwë leans down to kiss his brow. "For now, let us rest and enjoy the storm together."

What is the difference between a will and a trust? A will and a trust are both estate planning tools, but they serve different purposes. A will is a legal document that outlines how your assets will be distributed after your death. It becomes effective only upon your death and goes through the probate process. On the other hand, a trust is a legal arrangement that can be used to manage your assets while you're still alive and after your death. Trusts can help you avoid the probate process and provide greater control over how your assets are distributed. 2. Do I need to hire an attorney for estate planning? Additionally, without an estate plan, the probate process can be more complicated and expensive for your loved ones. 4. How often should I update my estate plan? It's recommended to review and update your estate plan every three to five years, or whenever you experience a major life event such as marriage, divorce, birth, or death of a family member. This will ensure that your estate plan remains up-to-date and reflects your current wishes. 5. What is the probate process? The probate process is the legal process by which a person's assets are distributed after their death. If you have a will, it will go through probate to ensure that it is legally binding and that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. If you don't have a will, your assets will be distributed according to the laws of your state. Probate can be a lengthy and expensive process, which is why many people choose to use trusts to avoid it. Read the full article

youngest  daughter  born  to  the  sayid  family,  a  powerhouse  of  politicians.  her  mother  is  a  current  sitting  senator  for  new  york  and  her  father  is  the  current  deputy  prime  minister  of  malaysia.  they  met  years  prior,  during  her  mother’s  first  term  meanwhile  her  father  was  the  former  attorney  general  for  malaysia,  at  a  un  gala.  as  much  as  they  both  were  passionate  and  concerned  about  their  work,  love  never  had  a  timing  and  they  were  married  the  following  year.  all  the  siblings  have  relatively  normal  age  gaps  (  the  most  being  4  )  but  freyja  was  a  bit  of  a  surprise,  and  the  only  sibling  in  her  early  twenties.  the  rest  are  in  their  thirties,  with  her  eldest  sister  nearing  forty  soon.  that,  paired  with  the  fact  freyja  showed  zero  interest  in  politics,  allowed  them  to  have  a  rather  hollow  and  strained  relationship.  she  has  a  somewhat  stable  and  semi-consistent  relationship  with  her  older  sister,  the  second  youngest,  but  they  don’t  meet  very  often  due  to  work.  they  often  treated  her  like  the  ultimate  downfall  of  the  sayid  family.
growing  up,  money  and  the  likes  clearly  weren’t  a  problem.  as   a  child,  she’d  tag  along  often  with  her  mom  or  dad  (  rarely  ever  both  )  and  occasionally  with  a  sibling,  and  hated  anything  that  wasn’t  sweet,  glittery,  or  one  of  a  kind.  helping  with  campaigns were  boring  in  freyja’s  eyes  and  she’d  often  sneak  away  to  go  doodle  in  the  bathroom  walls  or  play  on  her  blinged  out,  pink  nintendo  ds.  needless  to  say,  this  was  never  going  to  be  her  jam.  her  parents  role  in  her  life  was  rather  inconsistent,  but  not  on  purpose.  it  was  mainly  work-related,  so  she  was  taken  care  by  a  few  trusted  nannies  and  butlers.  her  siblings  all  moved  out  by  the  time  freyja  was  finishing  up  elementary  school,  she  was  used  to  being  alone.
not  much  else  is  known  of  freyja  (  everything  was  p  chill  )  until  she  enters  high  school.  she  enrolls  into  a private  and  elite  boarding  school  in  europe  and  instantly  becomes  a  hybrid  ;  both  the  social  butterfly  and  the  queen  bee.  the  sudden  attention  she  receives  and  the  feeling  of  having  people  under  her  thumb sets  her  heart  on  fire.  she  adores  this,  loves  it  even.  she  gets  what  she  wants  with  a  bat  of  her  bambi  eyes  or  a  little  whine,  but  no  one  really  can  say  no  to  her.  beauty  and  power  go  hand  in  hand,  and  freyja  sayid  masters  it  by  age  fifteen.  while  it  was  a  boarding  school,  her  parents  purchased  an  estate  for  freyja  to  stay  at  instead  nearby  with  her  nannies  and  butlers  and  security.  what  that  meant  to  freyja  ?  throw  the  sickest  summer  parties  before  school  started  and  the  best  holiday  get  togethers  the  first  week  of  winter  break  (  before  she  inevitably  flies  off  in  a  private  jet  with  her  friends  to  a  sayid  family  owned  villa  near  the  alps )  and  she  began  drinking  /  smoking  early  on.  the  world  was  this  giant  oyster  and  freyja  the  pearl.  graduated  with  honors  as  valedictorian  and  prom  queen,  voted  ‘  most  likely  to  rule  the  world  ‘  and oh,  how  she  is  coming  so  close.
after  graduating,  she  spent  a  few  years  travelling  and  partying  with  friends.  she  spent  less  and  less  time  with  family,  only  for  formal  events  or  re-elections  or  other  boring  shit  she  didn’t  give  two  cents  about.  most  of  the  time  she  showed  up  stoned  to  pass  the  time  away.  most  of  her  antics  were  able  to  be  paid  off  by  her  family  to  save  themselves  some  embarrassment,  but  sometimes  (  notably  about  a  rumored  new  beau  or  leaving  the  club  at  ungodly  hours  )  would  slip  onto  tabloids.  and  yes,  her  pr  manager  is  100%  always  stressing  out  over  freyja.
her  influence  over  value  was  noticed  by  brands  by  age  19,  when  something  she  wore  was  sold  out  as  soon  as  the  pictures  of  her  in  it  went  viral.  by  20,  she  was  soon  modelling  for  major  brands  and  received  early  invitations  to  attend  fashion  week  for  brands  like  gucci,  saint  laurent,  and  chanel.  dubbed  ‘  human  gucci  ‘  and  ‘  human  chanel  ‘  due  to  her  fashion  sense.   hairpins  that  she  sported  one  spring  went  viral  and  were  soon  known  as  ‘  freyja’s  hairpins  ‘  ,  a  huge  tell  tale  sign  of  her  powerful  influence  over  value  and  selling  power.  had  modelled  for  magazines  such  as  vogue  (  internationally,  too )  /  harper’s bazaar /  marie  claire  /  elle  /  high  cut  /  w  /  cosmopolitan  /  and  billboard.  currently,  the  face  of  ‘  hera  ‘,  a  south  korean  luxury  brand,  the  house  ambassador  for  chanel,  collabed  with  samsung  to  release  a  limited  edition  version  of  a  phone  with  her  signature  color  ;  red,  known  as  ‘  freyja’s  red  ‘.  recently,  she  has  worked  as  an  editor  for  her  latest  magazine  release  (  feb’  21  for  vogue  )  and  last  year,  released  a  collaboration  with  ‘  gentle  monster  ‘  ,  a  south  korean  luxury  eyewear  brand,  and  was  just  named  as  the  face  for  a  popular  liquor  brand  in  sweden.  she  is  taking  a  small  break  until  summer  to  give  her  some  time  to  breath  with  a  hectic  life  before  she  goes  back  into  working.  basically,  her  face  is  like  everywhere.
a  jealous,  vindictive  sort  of  bitch.  wants  what  other  people  has  because  she  wants  to  see  how  far  the  world  will  bend  for  her  and  because  she  knows   she  can  have  it.  has  cheated  with  partners  before,  though  it  has  toned  down  a  bit  now.  will  flirt  and  mess  with  someone,  not  caring  if  they  are  in  a  relationship  or  talking  to  someone.  often  goes  viral  for  ‘  sitting  pretty  ‘  and  really  loves  being  at  the  dead  center  of  the  spotlight.  at  the  same  time,  the  void  of  being  ‘  abandoned  ‘  by  family  makes  her  extremely  loyal  to  friends  (  yes,  she  picks  sides  after  friendship  and  romantic  breakups  )  and  her  chosen  family.  will  go  to  the  end  of  the  world  for  them,  often  spoils  them  with  matching  jewelry  or  shirts  to  go  on  cute  dates  together.  bad  day  ?  she’ll  get  a  lift  over,  make  you  pack,  and  head  to  the  sayid  family  jet  to  go  wherever  you  want  to  go.  a  good  ally  to  have,  a  terrifying  enemy  to  have.

the ticking of the clock seems slower & slower
January 7, 2020; King’s Landing
Just after 4 o’clock in the morning, a shriek is heard from the portrait gallery, causing detectives and guests alike to scurry toward the commotion. No one is certain of what they will find, but they are surprised at what they do.
Set up on a pedestal, neatly arranged to look like an art installation, complete with fiberglass cube overtop of it, is Balon Greyjoy’s heart.
A note accompanies the discovery, taped to marble pillar with shocking precision, the ink so red one of the detectives is overheard asking whether or not it is actually written in the man’s own blood. Though the contents of the note are not publicly released, the witness who found the heart repeats it to anyone who asks.
Your heart can rest in a morgue, dissected so much that it will never return to the salt from which it came.
The note displays a shocking knowledge of information regarding historical Ironborn funeral rituals, though it goes over the heads of most. [ In the War of the Dragons, many Ironborn had died on the seas and shores away from the Iron Islands. While the bodies were often given to the Drowned God of the Sea, their hearts were always sent home for burial on the island they had come from. This practice is woefully outdated and history books only mention this in the most obscure sense. It is a fact that only the most learned in the Drowned God would know. ]
Many attendees are filled with revulsion and some even faint. After this discovery, it is incredibly difficult for the staff and the detectives to keep order. Most guests are questioned a second time, the detectives wanting to be seen as doing something. After his second interrogation, GENDRY BARATHEON is arrested and brought into custody, though the exact charges are unclear as he was never seen anywhere near the family wing of the house. ROBERT BARATHEON, his father, in a shocking display of paternal care that he has never before displayed, argues with a detective until he is blue in the face and the detective is lying on the ground with a broken jaw. Father and son are handcuffed at the same time and led out of 14 Valyrian Way a little after 5 o’clock in the morning.
More interviews continue, with an emphasis placed on those closest to the BARATHEONS. At 5:30 in the morning, EDDARD STARK is arrested alongside JON ARRYN, both men looking resigned yet confused at this strange turn of events.
The final arrest comes just before anyone is allowed to leave, with VISERYS TARGARYEN being led out of the ballroom in handcuffs. Angry and thirsty for revenge, THEON GREYJOY punches him just once before the prince is led out into a waiting car.
For the remaining attendees, there is little left to do but speculate, since it is quite clear that there is little possibility that all of these men worked together to kill the Prime Minister.
No, some whisper, Military Intelligence is simply grasping at straws and hoping something will stick.
The remaining guests are finally allowed to leave around 6 o’clock in the morning, just as the first hints of dawn arrive, the red sky ominously reflecting on the snowfall that had accumulated on the cobblestones during the night. Though the detectives have no desire to allow anyone to leave, they cannot hold hundreds of guests without probable cause - especially not now that their lawyers are awake and already threatening legal action against Military Intelligence.
After the guests have left, detectives comb through the house once more looking for any clues they may have missed. It is during the sweep of the third floor that they find the body of GREATJON UMBER, a well-known proponent of Northern independence and a former professional boxer from the North. Further inspection shows that he fought off his attacker as best he could and the detectives are flummoxed that one person could overpower two strong men with none being any the wiser.
JON UMBER’S death is kept from the press at this point in time, though it does not take long for the rumors to circulate. It appears that anyone who was able to leave the Prime Minister’s Residence was, in fact, quite lucky.
the aftermath
Upon arrival at Military Intelligence Offices, EDDARD STARK confers with his attorney and is visited by the newly abdicated RHAEGAR TARGARYEN. He is released before ever being booked, though the papers question his honor at every turn, convinced that he has something to hide.
ROBERT BARATHEON is released from jail on JANUARY 8. His assault of the detective is swept under the rug thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous party. His son, GENDRY, is released on JANUARY 9, on a hefty bond and has his passport taken from him. Baratheon money, the papers note, can cleanse even the evilest person of all manner of sins.
VISERYS TARGARYEN, it turns out, remains a diplomat and as such has diplomatic immunity. He is held for the maximum period of time [ three days ] before being released into the custody of his elder brother.
JON ARRYN, however, remains in jail on trumped-up charges of murder that make sense to no one. The people of the VALE begin to riot in THE EYRIE and there are several demonstrations planned for KING’S LANDING in the coming weeks.

WWNRD?  Or, What Would Nurse Ratched Do?  Ft. Nurse Ratched
Cannabis Refugee, Esq. Advertising / Media / Cultural Conversation, Alternative Treatment, Capitalistic Patriarchal Medicine, Family / Friends, Marijuana / Cannabis, Other Autoimmune Diseases, Radical Feminism
October 31, 2019
Nurse Ratched was a sadistic, evil bitch at the time and would be that and a dangerously out of touch political dinosaur now.  Please do not do what she would do.  If anything, ask yourself WWNRD and then do the opposite.
Speaking with my mother recently made me sympathize with young smartasses and activists who are just waiting for the elder generation — the out of touch Baby Boomers and the Baby Boomers’ parents and kids by this point — to give up the ghost and die.  A “dinosaur” or political dinosaur is someone whose philosophy and worldview are obsolete and rooted in problematic values and circumstances of the distant past.  For example, as a young activist in my teens and 20s I remember thinking and saying that the world would be a better place once those who grew up with unregulated environmental pollution and legal institutionalized racism, sexism etc. died off because their environmental unconcern, racism and sexism were so entrenched that they either didn’t realize, agree or care what they were doing and being was wrong.
Welp.  After being sick my entire fucking life with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease, and going on 8 years with a diagnosed one, I am having these same thoughts now about the older generation of Western medical practitioners and others who were born, grew up and/or progenated in a low-population, relatively unpolluted pre-nuclear world where lifelong serious, untreatable, incurable and progressive disease existed only in very small numbers and therefore where older people seem to believe and act as if chronic illness did not and does not exist at all.
Tumblr media
To be clear, chronic illness obviously did exist in our recent and distant past, for example, natural uranium deposits are known to cause acute and chronic radiation sickness to those who spend time around it. And humans have likely always been struck down with genetic and congenital maladies that might not have outright killed them.  But old/er people seem to have lived their entire lives without chronic illness, including autoimmune and immune-mediated disease, front and center in their consciousness or as a part of their lived experience and this does make sense: before, say, the 1940s and 50s the worst industrial (man-made ionizing nuclear) pollutants had yet to be widely dispersed and contemporary Western medicine did not, because it could not, routinely pluck seriously ill and/or nonviable neonates, infants and others from the brink of merciful, natural deaths.  Today, seriously ill children and others are rather forced to live for years, decades and lifetimes with serious illnesses that do not outright kill them, because Western medicine will not allow it, but which Western medicine has yet to figure out how to treat, relieve, or cure.
Tumblr media
Having researched chronic illness, primarily autoimmune and immune-mediated disease for going on 8 years now, it seems to me that, in stark contrast to the life experience and worldview of older people, young people today generally are very aware that incurable and progressive chronic illness exists.  Over and over I see that young people today, at least young Western people, well understand and accept the reality of chronic illness much more freely than older people, and the implications of that are extremely dark.  From what I can discern, this difference in worldview likely exists because young people are increasingly becoming seriously chronically ill themselves.  Young people understand and accept the material reality of chronic illness because experiencing it personally as individuals and in their peer group they have no choice but to accept it.
Tumblr media
And over and over I see that older people are generally ignorant about issues of chronic illness and that they have not experienced it either individually or in their peer group.  Frighteningly, instead of recognizing their blessed ignorance and trying to remedy it, older people think that their personal opinion based on outdated and second- and third-hand pseudo-knowledge about chronic illness matters or affects the outcome.  It doesn’t, but unfortunately many medical professionals, healthcare policymakers, paid and unpaid caretakers and the like embrace an outdated worldview that no longer applies in our post-nuclear, Western world, and thus do not or cannot fully believe the self-reports of, or even contemporary peer-reviewed medical research addressing, the experiences and needs of seriously chronically ill.
Tumblr media
A few weeks ago, a day and a half into a migraine (I’m getting 4 day migraines now, yay!) I panicked over my migraine-related inability to work on my small business, pursue benefits, or do virtually anything as I was completely and totally incapacitated.  In what I can only describe as a misguided and ultimately futile cry for help, bedridden, I called my mother to update her about the situation, whereupon she made some statements of position that were so ignorant they verily shocked me.  Laying in the dark with a sleep mask over my eyes, and a puke bucket near my bed, what I heard uttered from my mother’s lips was so egregiously out of touch with accepted thinking that it frankly terrified me.
Attempting to explain to her how and why she was wrong exhausted me. Knowing that she was moved not an inch by my description of my plight — instead smugly maintaining her “position” throughout as if she were engaging in a political debate rather than considering an emergency communique — enraged me.
Tumblr media
For example, when I told my mom that I had a new diagnosis of High Functioning Autism, or HFA, she seemed unsurprised but said I wasn’t autistic as a child because I was always “bright.”  Okay.   In her mind, my HFA-consistent and completely obvious lifelong deficits in executive function — think literal and figurative “housekeeping” — and social competency (including feminine roleplaying which also includes both literal and figurative housekeeping, fuck me sideways) had nothing to do with autism and instead were just me being a lifelong asshole, lazy, and a bitch.  She always believed that about me and she never hesitated to tell me about it.  But at least I was bright.  But now, because I’m no longer a practicing attorney and a “success” and instead am struggling to maintain any quality of life as a seriously ill person with limitations, and I can’t maintain an illusion of physical health anymore if I ever could, I’m a lifelong lazy asshole bitch and a freshly minted unbright/retard on top of it.  Also, there is apparently such a thing as adult-onset autism. Because she says so.
Of course, my mother’s opinion about HFA is irrelevant and obsolete where HFA-literate people today know that high-functioning autism — the bright, non-retarded kind —  is a bona fide thing, that particularly HFA females are often not diagnosed until late/r in life, and that “brightness” or intelligence is often a symptom/feature of HFA and not the antithesis of it.       Autistic Tumblr — or any young autism or chronic illness related social media site — would tear that political dinosaur a new egg-hole if she dared say something so ignorant patently false about autistics on that platform.  And so they probably should if they wanted to expend the energy and if they thought it would help.
Yes, I recently discovered the dark corner of the internet known as Autistic Tumblr: young people creating content, commentary and community from the shared perspective and lived experience that autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) including HFA is real and has real, material effects on people’s lives.  Often, those effects have nothing to do with being low-functioning, or unbright.  Which is not to say that I find Autistic or Chronic Illness Tumblr a particularly sane or comforting place to be.  As I recently learned myself, Autistic Tumblr is an upsetting, dystopian place where young autistics put great effort into and emphasis on “normalizing” and “validating” terrible things that rightfully should never exist at all: autistic and chronic illness related things like melting down, stimming and managing chronic fatigue, chronic pain, chronic gut issues and the like, because although most of them are much younger than me, due to their autism and (likely) related physical and mental issues they are extremely ill and can barely get through their day.
Tumblr media
In fact, upon hearing and considering these self-reports, one might even speculate that physical and mental pain is what likely drives autistics’ trademark weird, antisocial and self-absorbed behavior, where they are in fact “bright” enough to communicate online at the very least (and often have work, school and social commitments) but are exhausted from insomnia, chronic pain and ME/CFS; anorexic because they can’t eat anything; are having infantile hand-flapping meltdowns in public or breaking into inopportune episodes of “stimming” behavior to soothe themselves and they can’t deal with people giving them the side-eye at school and work on top of it.  Autistic young people are living in hell, utter hell, judging from their self-reports.  Considering that vast and increasing numbers of young people are autistic, it seems likely that extreme physical and mental distress is normal for many young people now.  Young people much more than old people seem to know this.  People who care to put in a modicum of research know this.
To further illustrate, when I was attempting to describe my current limitations to my mother she completely dismissed me and said that when it comes to disability, one is either totally disabled or not disabled at all.  Lest I misunderstand what she meant by that, she spontaneously clarified her statement to mean that if I have limitations I should be in a “home” and if I don’t need to be in a “home” then there is no reason I can’t act as if I’m not disabled at all.  In other words, despite being demonstrably, seriously ill, I “should” be able to act/function as if I’m perfectly fine.  Because she says so.
Tumblr media
Of course, as I understand it, invalid “homes” are largely a thing of the past, at least in this country, having literally gone the way of the dinosaur.  And many sick and injured people are, in fact, demonstrably partially disabled, where they are able to perform some activities of daily living and perhaps some higher level activities like bookkeeping and such but not all; accessing “services” to help partially and even very disabled people to live as independently as possible — and not institutionalized — is the way it works now.  Partially disabled does not equal totally disabled, you sadistic Nurse Ratched, you decrepit fossil, nor does partially disabled mean not disabled at all.  She then proceeded to disagree with me — and contemporary peer reviewed medical research corroborating thousands of years of human history and shared experience — that cannabis is an effective anti-inflammatory and is particularly useful in inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s.  According to her, and based on nothing, pot isn’t an effective or necessary medicine for any condition, and it’s “merely” an effective pain reliever (!) and therefore is not actually medicine at all.  Because she said so.
Tumblr media
This ignorant, sadistic ideological fossil maintains her nursing license and continues to “care for” actual patients including sick infants and children.   Whatever “caring” means to her, and people like her: assholes who rely on frighteningly outdated material on which to form and support their opinions on contemporary medical and social issues, including contemporary chronic illness that for whatever reason is increasing in incidence and prevalence.  And particularly in our post-nuclear, radioactively contaminated environment, including the toxic, autoimmune uterine environment in which many of us spend our first 3/4 of a year and which is known to cause autism.  While information on Crohn’s, HFA, medical marijuana etc. is easily Googleable, and appears to be widely known by young people, apparently my 67 year old nurse mother is waiting for the news to break via Teletype or otherwise didn’t get the memo.
Tumblr media
Of course, if I was a partially disabled man and had a wife (or mother) to perform all my executive function tasks (including bookkeeping services for my small business) for me, no one would even notice I was disabled.  If I were male instead of female perhaps my life wouldn’t be falling apart at all, and certainly the prospect of committing me to a nonexistent/extinct 1940s era invalid home because I can’t wait in line or consistently do my business and personal taxes anymore would have never been raised at all.
