The North Star - Part Seven: The Heist - Terry Bruno x Reader (Feat Mike Duarte)
Tumblr media
Welcome to mine and @the-hinky-panda The Bronx universe featuring our favs Terry Bruno & Mike Duarte.
This story takes place several years after 'Blood Out'. Terry still lives in the Bronx and works in Manhatten SVU.
Following on from @the-hinky-panda story 'The Dog' Mike has retired from the NYPD on medical grounds due to seizures causes by the attack. He has a therapy dog called Bono and lives with @the-hinky-panda character Meredith.

Part One: Moments
It was three quarters of the way through your appraisal of the room that you spotted him. That familiar dark hair neatly slicked back from his grizzled features, a black waistcoat over white shirt and black trousers. He was dressed like one of the caterers, a large silver whipped cream canister tucked under his arm as he pulled aside a discreet black velvet curtain at the back of the room and slipped behind it.
Are you fucking kidding me? You thought exasperated. Every time you thought this case couldn’t get any more complicated; something threw a spanner in the works.
A Degas and now a Duarte. Christ, Terry was going to get a kick out of this.
Paul was still occupied on the opposite side of the gallery, his head bent low as he talked with Arthur Munson, the fence and host for the evening. You followed Mike’s footsteps, disappearing behind the curtain before anyone could realise that you were missing.
It took you a second to realise that the room was set up for the auction later tonight. Over a dozen chairs facing a stage that included a podium and a gavel. It was old school, compared to the way it was done these days with computers and electronics. Paul had mentioned that Arthur Munson was a traditionalist. The walls were littered with artwork, a blatant display of the man’s proclivities. You didn’t recognise any of the pieces, but you assumed they were each worth a small fortune. This event tonight was an opportunity to show off, to fortify his reputation as a collector and procurer. A decadent marketing campaign that put his competition to shame.
At the end of the front row, near the stage stood Mike Duarte, his scarred hands covered with black latex gloves as he clasped the frame in front of him and tried to pull it from the wall. It stuck fast, unrelenting as he yanked at it again before huffing with irritation.
“Mike.” You hissed as your gaze came to land on him. “Tell me you aren’t trying to steal that painting.”
“I’m not trying.” He snorted, inclining his head towards you for a moment before turning his attention back to the task at hand. “And I consider it a liberation.”
You stepped up to the painting as he withdrew a scalpel from his waistcoat pocket. It glinted wickedly in the dim light above.
“Is that…” You trailed off as you studied the painting in front of you.
The photographs you’d viewed on Meredith’s coffee table didn’t do it justice. It was vibrant and evocative, all plush greens and vivid blues. A sprawling hillside near Medellin, Colombia, a miniscule white picnic blanket had been added in such beautiful, perfect detail, you could see the tiny red poppies embroidered into the fabric. There was life in this work, it emitted through the thin layer of canvas vibrating through your bones as you stood entranced.
“Carrillo’s work is stunning. Nobody knew he painted, only that he put the fear of God into Escobar.” Mike informed you as he took a second to survey it.
“Mike, I can’t let you...”
“Yes you can.” He said firmly, turning to face you. His eyes fixated on yours, you saw the ferocity in his gaze, the ire and the passion. “His family deserve to have this back; it’s not meant for anybody else’s eyes. He painted it for his wife, to remind her of what they were fighting for before the Narcos killed her. That man sacrificed everything for what he believed in and I’ll be damned if I let this sit in some cartel shithead’s mansion like a fucking trophy.”
There was a viciousness in his voice, an undercurrent of anguish and understanding because Mike had done something similar. He had given everything for the neighbourhood, his heart, his soul and almost his life. He’d lived a lonely existence before Meredith had come along, he had told you one night in front of the fireplace, sharing a bottle of 19 Crimes. Meredith’s head had been resting on a cushion in his lap where she’d fallen asleep, his fingertips were brushing through her hair tenderly.  You discussed his life prior to the attack, how isolated he had become, how he had simply been surviving instead of living. It had been years since he’d actually been able to breath, and with Meredith he thought he’d found a home, someone to love, someone who loved him in return. He couldn’t believe it most days, sometimes he thought he was dreaming, that he’d wake up and the bubble would burst but then Bono would greet him with a cold enquiring nose, Shasta would lick his face and Meredith would laugh and his heart felt like it would explode in his chest.
You recognised that feeling, the one where you were waiting for the other shoe to drop. You had it in the dead of night while Terry slept beside you, his face buried in the curve of your throat, his soft breath ghosting over your skin. There was nothing quite as perfect as being wrapped up in his arms, feeling his heartbeat steadily against yours.
“It’s getting shipped out tomorrow.” Mike told you; he lifted the scalpel to the painting before sucking in a breath and hesitating. “That fucking asshole Munson wanted everyone to get one good look before it disappeared. It’s meant to be his piece de la resistance, proof he can get absolutely anything.” He paused, the scalpel wavering as he tried to select the right place to cut. “Go back to the party, I’ll be gone before you make your bust.”
You reached for the scalpel instead, your fingers wrapping around the handle and removing it from his grasp. Mike let you, your hands were steadier than his, these days. He moved to allow you more space to work.
“We can use the scalpel to break the frame instead.” You informed him, driving the slender blade between a minuscule space in the corner of the wooden panel before leveraging it from side to side. “That way you won’t be compromising the painting.”
Mike cleared his throat as a low crack resounded through the air, the lacquered wood beginning to separate at the joint.
“Meredith’s dad used to do carpentry.” You explained, hooking your finger under the lip of the frame and gently working it away from the painting. “It’s why I like upcycling so much. Do you have something to put the painting in once I’m done?”
Mike picked up the metal whipped cream cannister from the seat where it resided before unscrewing the top and revealing an empty vessel.
“Should I be concerned about how good you are this?” You asked him as you pulled away the side panel of the frame and set it down upon the floor. Mike picked removed a folded handkerchief from his pocket and wiped down the glossy surface as you tactfully slid canvas from its prison.
“I should be asking you the same thing Sergeant.” He said as he took the artwork from your hands with the utmost care before rolling it up gently and placing it inside the container. You took the handkerchief from his outstretched hand and wiped down the rest of the frame before depositing it and the scalpel into your clutch. “How long do I have?”
You removed your phone from your purse, your thumb flicking over the unlock screen.
“I’m about to call in the FBI.” You told him, your thumb hoovering over your text chain with Sinclair. “So, I’d get out of here as soon as possible.”
Mike rose an eyebrow.
“There’s a Degas out there.”
A smile twitched at his lips, and you found yourself returning it, a burst of laughter beginning to bubble in your chest as the sheer ridiculousness of this situation. You had to look away because you knew that it would erupt from your mouth if you held his gaze any longer.
“Bruno is gonna love this.”  He said, tucking the cannister back under his arm.
“I think he’s gonna ban me from watching Ocean’s Eight after this.” You told him, typing out your message to Sinclair.
‘There’s a fucking Degas.’ with three head exploding emojis. ‘Five Dancing Women (Ballerinas)’
He’d know what to do, Sinclair had been your right-hand man ever since you’d made Sergeant and transferred into the Bronx Homicide Unit. He was the one you trusted the most out of all the detectives you supervised.
“You probably have ten minutes after I send this message.” You informed Mike as the two of you strode back towards the black velvet curtain obscuring the doorway. “Head out the service exit. I’ve got Sinclair covering the back and he knows your face.”
Mike nodded his head, before straightening his shoulders and schooling his features into polite boredom before stepping out from behind the curtain and back into the main gallery.  You hit the send button on your message as the curtain closed behind him.

Solar Energy in Colombia: Myths and Realities of Solar Panels
Paneles solares colombia is rapidly gaining popularity in Colombia as more people become aware of the environmental and financial benefits it offers. However, despite its growing acceptance, there are still many myths and misconceptions surrounding solar panels that can cause hesitation or confusion among potential users. This article aims to debunk some of the most common myths and present the realities of solar energy in Colombia.
Myth 1: Solar Panels Are Too Expensive for the Average Household
Reality: While the initial investment in solar panels can be high, the long-term savings they offer make them an economically viable option. In Colombia, the costs of solar panel systems have decreased significantly in recent years due to advancements in technology and increased market competition. Moreover, the Colombian government has introduced several incentives, such as tax exemptions and financing options, to make solar energy more accessible to the average household. Over time, the savings on electricity bills can offset the initial installation costs, making solar panels an affordable choice.
Myth 2: Colombia’s Climate Isn’t Suitable for Solar Energy
Reality: Colombia has an ideal climate for solar energy production, with many regions receiving abundant sunlight throughout the year. Even in areas with frequent cloud cover, modern solar panels are designed to capture both direct and diffuse sunlight, ensuring efficient energy production. Cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali receive enough solar radiation to make solar panels an effective energy source. Additionally, Colombia's location near the equator provides a consistent level of sunlight year-round, further enhancing the potential for solar power generation.
Myth 3: Solar Panels Require Constant Maintenance
Reality: Solar panels are remarkably low-maintenance. Most panels only require periodic cleaning to remove dust, leaves, or debris that might reduce their efficiency. In fact, many solar panels come with warranties of 20 to 25 years, during which they require minimal upkeep. In Colombia, where rain is frequent in many areas, natural rainfall often helps keep panels clean. Professional maintenance services are also available and can help ensure optimal performance with minimal effort from the owner.
Myth 4: Solar Panels Are Not Durable
Reality: Solar panels are built to withstand a wide range of weather conditions, including rain, wind, and even hail. In Colombia, solar panels are specifically designed and tested to endure the country’s diverse climatic conditions, from the high-altitude cold of the Andes to the tropical heat of the Caribbean coast. Most manufacturers offer warranties that cover damage and guarantee performance, which speaks to the durability and reliability of the panels over many years.
Myth 5: Solar Energy Is Only for the Rich or Environmentally Conscious
Reality: Solar energy is not just for the wealthy or those who are deeply committed to environmental causes. In Colombia, solar panels are increasingly being adopted by middle-income families and small businesses as a practical solution to rising energy costs. Beyond the financial benefits, using solar power reduces the carbon footprint of a household or business, contributing to a cleaner environment. The widespread availability of financing options, government incentives, and falling costs are making solar energy accessible to a wider audience.
Myth 6: Solar Panels Can Only Power Small Devices
Reality: Modern solar panels are powerful enough to meet the energy needs of an entire household or business. From running appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners to powering lights and electronic devices, solar panels can handle a substantial load. With the use of energy storage solutions like batteries, solar systems can even provide power during the night or on cloudy days, ensuring a continuous supply of energy.
Myth 7: Solar Energy Is Not Reliable
Reality: Solar energy is one of the most reliable forms of renewable energy available. While solar panels do depend on sunlight, technological advancements have made them highly efficient even in less-than-ideal conditions. In addition, energy storage solutions such as batteries can store excess energy generated during sunny periods for use during nighttime or cloudy days, providing a stable and consistent energy supply.
The Realities of Solar Energy in Colombia
Government Support and Incentives: The Colombian government is actively promoting solar energy through various incentives and policies. These include tax exemptions, reduced tariffs, and net metering policies that allow solar panel users to sell excess electricity back to the grid, further enhancing the economic appeal of solar energy.
Growing Solar Industry: Colombia's solar industry is expanding rapidly, with new companies offering competitive prices, high-quality products, and installation services. This growth is driving down costs and increasing the availability of solar energy options for consumers across the country.
Environmental Benefits: Solar energy is a clean, renewable source of power that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. In Colombia, where hydropower is the primary source of electricity, solar energy provides an important complementary option, especially in areas affected by droughts or changes in water availability.
Conclusion
Paneles solares colombia is surrounded by myths that often deter people from exploring this sustainable and cost-effective option. However, the realities of solar power present a compelling case for its adoption, especially as the technology becomes more affordable, reliable, and accessible. With the support of government policies and a growing market, solar panels are becoming an increasingly practical choice for households and businesses across Colombia, offering both economic and environmental benefits.

Schools are using surveillance tech to catch students vaping (AP) When Aaliyah Iglesias was caught vaping at a Texas high school, she didn’t realize how much could be taken from her. Suddenly, the rest of her high school experience was threatened: being student council president, her role as debate team captain and walking at graduation. Even her college scholarships were at risk. She was sent to the district’s alternative school for 30 days and told she could have faced criminal charges. Like thousands of other students around the country, she was caught by surveillance equipment that schools have installed to crack down on electronic cigarettes, often without informing students. Schools nationwide have invested millions of dollars in the monitoring technology, including federal COVID-19 emergency relief money meant to help schools through the pandemic and aid students’ academic recovery.
U.S. signals it is open to withdrawing some troops from Iraq (Washington Post) Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin left the door open Thursday to reducing the U.S. military presence in Iraq, saying that meetings set to begin soon between officials from the two countries will enable a “transition to an enduring bilateral security partnership” that builds on years of joint operations against the Islamic State. Many Iraqi officials have called for the ouster of U.S. forces after a months-long cycle of violence, inflamed by the Israel-Gaza war, between Iranian-backed militias and U.S. forces. U.S. military positions in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 153 times since October by militant groups trained and supplied by Iran, including incidents Thursday in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil and at Ain al-Asad Air Base in the western part of the country. Iraqi officials have increasingly responded with anger when the United States has retaliated with airstrikes. The militias have tied their attacks to the war in Gaza and to U.S. support for Israel’s campaign against Hamas.
Colombia declares a disaster because of wildfires (AP) Colombia’s government declared a disaster Thursday and asked for international help to combat raging wildfires that are expected to worsen in coming days due to warm, dry conditions associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon. Officials raised the number of fires from 25 to 31, and said nine of them were under control. They did not order mandatory evacuations despite some fires burning in the mountains that surround some municipalities. President Gustavo Petro said Chile, the United States, Peru and Canada have already responded to the call for help, without specifying when the assistance will arrive to the South American country.
As terror grips the streets of Ecuador, even the armed forces live in fear (CNN) In the aftermath of gang attacks on January 9, President Daniel Noboa took an unprecedented step. He declared an “internal armed conflict” in the country and ordered Ecuador’s armed forces to “neutralize” the members of more than 20 gangs, which he labeled as terror groups. Since then, Ecuador’s national police and armed forces have been carrying out raids of homes of those with suspected ties to terror groups. Fear has permeated the ranks; even in Guayaquil’s 90-degree heat and humidity, under layers of tactical gear, they insist on putting on a ski mask before being filmed. On the front lines, while there is determination, there is also hesitation. Among the police and military tasked with conducting raids and preemptive strikes, some fear what will happen to them or their families if terrorists link them to the crackdown efforts. The crisis could drive more Ecuadorians to emigrate. Locals are tired of living in fear and being extorted for protection money, says Carlos Jimenez, an urban planner who studied in the US and is now living in his native Ecuador. “These people are in the middle of gunfights in their neighborhoods, what would you do? You’re not going to want to stay there.”
Britain says it has no plans for conscription, after top general says the UK may need a citizen army (AP) On Wednesday, Gen. Patrick Saunders, the head of the British Army, said that a British “citizen army” would be needed in a potential land war with a country like Russia. Saunders stated that, if the conflict expands, “within the next three years, it must be credible to talk of a British Army of 120,000.” He also praised countries close to Russia for preparing for such a war and “prudently laying the foundations for national mobilization.” The U.K. government immediately walked back Saunders’ talking points that same day, declaring that the country had no plans to expand its armed forces past the 74,000 full-time troops it currently supports. In a statement about Saunders’ preparation plans, Max Blain, a spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, said that “engaging in hypothetical wars” was “not helpful.”
French Farmer Protests (1440) French farmers continued protesting yesterday, blocking roads and dumping imported produce across the country, demanding government action to address numerous grievances. The protests, now in their second week, are moving toward Paris after breaking out in the southwest agricultural region. At least two people have died during the protests. France has roughly 456,000 farms and is among the EU’s highest-producing countries, with an output of over $79B. The FNSEA farming union, which is leading the protest, is demanding better protection against cheaper foreign competition, continued diesel tax breaks, immediate EU agricultural subsidy payments, guarantees on health and climate insurance payouts, and aid for winemakers and organic farmers.
The Most Important Company in the World? (NYT/Opinion) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or T.S.M.C., is the only corporation I can think of in history that could cause a global depression if it were forced to halt production. These days it seems impossible to have a conversation about geopolitics or economics without coming back to T.S.M.C., which makes about 90 percent of the world’s most advanced chips. If the lights went out here in Hsinchu, in the company’s ultraclean and ultrasecure buildings, you might not be able to buy a new phone, car or watch. Armies could run out of precision-guided missiles and hospitals could struggle to replace advanced X-ray and M.R.I. machines. It might be like the Covid-19 supply chain chip disruption—times 10—and T.S.M.C., unfortunately, is situated in a region where war is possible and could threaten production. “Taiwan Semiconductor is one of the best-managed companies and important companies in the world,” Warren Buffett said last year. But he sold his $4 billion stake in T.S.M.C. because, he said, “I don’t like its location.”
Australians protest British colonization on a national holiday some mark as ‘Invasion Day’ (AP) Thousands of Australians protested the anniversary of British colonization of their country with large crowds Friday urging for Australia Day to be moved and for a day of mourning on the holiday some call “Invasion Day.” The holiday marks the arrival of 11 British ships carrying convicts at Port Jackson in present-day Sydney on Jan. 26, 1788. For many activists, the day marked the beginning of a sustained period of discrimination and expulsion of Indigenous people from their land without a treaty.
Top UN court orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza but stops short of ordering cease-fire (AP) The United Nations’ top court on Friday ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza, but the panel stopped short of ordering Jerusalem to end the military offensive that has laid waste to the Palestinian enclave. In a ruling that will keep Israel under the legal lens for years to come, the court offered little other comfort to Israeli leaders in a genocide case brought by South Africa that goes to the core of one of the world’s most intractable conflicts. The court’s half-dozen orders will be difficult to achieve without some sort of cease-fire or pause in the fighting. The ruling amounted to an overwhelming rebuke of Israel’s wartime conduct and added to mounting international pressure to halt the nearly 4-month-old offensive, which has killed more than 26,000 Palestinians, decimated vast swaths of Gaza and driven nearly 85% of its 2.3 million people from their homes. Allowing the accusations to stand stung the government of Israel, which was founded as a Jewish state after the Nazi slaughter of 6 million Jews during World War II.
Israel is building a buffer zone along the Gaza border, risking a new rift with the U.S. (WSJ) To Israeli officials, the 1-kilometer-wide area is a critical security measure in their plan to demilitarize Gaza and assure Israelis that they can return safely to the border communities that were evacuated after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. It would create a clear field of fire so Israeli troops can see and stop anyone approaching the frontier. The U.S. warns that turning the border along the 25-mile-long Gaza Strip into a no man’s land would deepen Palestinian fears that Israel intends to occupy all or part of the crowded enclave and would make it harder to persuade Arab governments to help rebuild a postwar Gaza. Meanwhile, Washington is pressing for a deal for the 100-plus hostages Hamas is holding in Gaza, as Israel and Qatar, one of the main Middle East mediators, spar.
Gaza’s daily struggle for food (Washington Post) The Washington Post spoke to six families across Gaza about their daily struggle for food. Ninety-three percent of people there face “crisis levels of hunger,” according to a U.N.-backed international consortium. Each day, for four days, Mohammad waited in line for a few pounds of flour. Returning home empty-handed to his five children, pained by hunger and humiliation, he ground up animal feed to bake over a makeshift stove. “We don’t know how dangerous eating animal feed is to our health, but we have no other options,” the 40-year-old said by phone from Gaza’s north.
Who bombed us today? (Daraj/Lebanon) Syria was already a nation torn apart by conflict, foreign and domestic. But lately, it appears more and more like a country that everyone feels at liberty to bomb—with different pretexts and for different reasons. Military bases in Syria that house U.S. forces were repeatedly attacked by explosives-laden drones and with missiles by Iran-backed militias. The U.S. military has responded with strikes on militias in both Syria and neighboring Iraq. Turkey, meanwhile, has continued to launch attacks on Kurdish-held areas in northeastern Syria, and has hit areas controlled by the Syrian regime in and around the city of Qamishli on January 14. Israel and the U.S. have repeatedly bombed sites and targets linked to Iran, Hezbollah and the Syrian regime. Jordan has become the latest to launch strikes on targets inside Syria, because the pace of drug smuggling from Syria to Jordan has increased. The strikes are part of multiple wars being waged on Syrian territories, involving many state and non-state actors. These wars have made Syria a country whose sovereignty is violated by many countries, with no end to such violations in sight.
Nones (Pew Research Center) When Americans are asked to check a box indicating their religious affiliation, 28% now check ‘none.’ A new study from Pew Research finds that the religiously unaffiliated—a group comprised of atheists, agnostic and those who say their religion is “nothing in particular”—is now the largest cohort in the U.S. They’re more prevalent among American adults than Catholics (23%) or evangelical Protestants (24%). Back in 2007, Nones made up just 16% of Americans, but Pew’s new survey of more than 3,300 U.S. adults shows that number has now risen dramatically. Researchers refer to this group as the “Nones.”

Jewellery Shop India The Best Emerald Stone
Introduction:
Emerald is a precious gemstone that belongs to the beryl mineral family, along with other popular gemstones such as aquamarine and morganite. Its vivid green color is caused by the presence of chromium and vanadium in its crystal structure. The emerald is one of the most valued gemstones in the world, and its popularity dates back to ancient times. This article will discuss the history, properties, and uses of emerald.
History:
Emerald has a long and fascinating history, with the earliest known emerald mines located in Egypt, near the Red Sea. The ancient Egyptians believed that the emerald represented fertility and rebirth and was a symbol of eternal life. They often buried emeralds with their dead and placed them in jewelry worn by high-ranking officials.
The Greeks and Romans also highly valued emerald, and it was often associated with the goddess Venus, who represented love and beauty. Roman emperor Nero was known to watch gladiator fights through a large emerald, which he believed would soothe his eyes.
Tumblr media
During the middle Ages, emerald continued to be highly valued and was often used in ecclesiastical jewelry. The Spanish conquistadors discovered large emerald deposits in Colombia in the 16th century, which led to an influx of emeralds in Europe. This period is often referred to as the "Emerald Age," with emerald jewelry being highly prized by European royalty.
Properties:
Emeralds are part of the beryl mineral family and are made up of aluminum, beryllium, silicon, and oxygen. Its vivid green color is caused by the presence of chromium and vanadium in its crystal structure. The color can range from a pale green to a deep, rich green. Emeralds with a darker, more intense green color are typically more valuable.
The clarity of emeralds can vary, with inclusions and fractures often present in the gemstone. However, these inclusions can also enhance the beauty of the stone, creating a unique look that is highly prized by some collectors. The Mohs hardness scale rates the emerald at 7.5 to 8, making it a relatively hard gemstone that can withstand daily wear.
Tumblr media
Uses:
Emeralds are most commonly used in jewelry, with rings, necklaces, and earrings being popular choices. The vivid green color of the emerald makes it a popular gemstone for statement pieces, with larger emeralds often used in high-end jewelry.
Emeralds are also believed to have healing properties, with some people using them in alternative medicine practices. It is believed that emeralds can help soothe the mind and promote emotional balance, making it a popular choice for meditation and spiritual practices.
In addition to jewelry and alternative medicine practices, emeralds are also used in industrial applications. Its hardness and durability make it a popular choice for abrasive materials, and it is also used in electronic components due to its high dielectric constant.
Value:
The value of an emerald is determined by several factors, including color, clarity, and size. Emeralds with a deep, rich green color are typically more valuable than those with a paler color. The clarity of the emerald is also an important factor, with fewer inclusions and fractures increasing the value of the gemstone. Larger emeralds are also typically more valuable than smaller ones.
In addition to these factors, the origin of the emerald can also impact its value. Colombian emeralds are highly prized due to their deep green color and high clarity, while emeralds from Zambia are known for their lighter, bluish-green color.
Conclusion:
Emeralds are a precious gemstone that has been highly valued throughout history. Its vivid green color and unique properties have made it a popular choice for jewelry, alternative.

Twenty Years Ago...
It was my the second day of my senior year of high school. I had just returned from visiting a bunch of colleges in Washington, DC. I was wearing a black/silver shirt from the Hard Rock Cafe in DC. It was a gorgeous day; perfect blue sky and only a few small, fluffy clouds. I was in AP Spanish class when two of my classmates got called out of class. This was not unusual because they ran the school news station and knew how to work all of the electronic equipment in the school.
Suddenly, we were told to turn on the tvs. Our principal came on and told us that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I remember being a little bit puzzled as to why he would tell us this, but I do live relatively close to NYC. We were allowed to keep the televisions on and it was switched to the news. A few minutes later, we watched the second plane hit the second tower. That was when we knew something was very much wrong and out of the ordinary. A little while later, the towers collapsed. I think that was one of the most gut wrenching, horrifying moments for me; I knew that all the people in the towers were gone and none of this was an accident. I remember our teacher, who was from Colombia, showing us pictures of soldiers stationed around public and government buildings. It was absolutely not what we wanted to see or talk about, but he was absolutely correct that more security and war were in our future.
I remember coming home from school that day and my mother was trying to contact friends in NYC. One of her friends is a doctor. Another is an author. They were both okay physically, but mentally and emotionally shaken to the core. In February 2002, I attended a conference for high school students in DC (Presidential Classroom). Someone involved in the conference had connections at the Pentagon. I was on the second tour of the Pentagon since that September; the group ahead of us was the first and were interviewed by the local news. It was a very quick tour; we had soldiers in front and in back of us; they kept our IDs until we left. There were some memorials in the halls; cards and pictures mostly. The hole in the wall looked like a regular construction site from the outside; you couldn't even tell from the inside.
Years later, we met the brother of one man who died in one of the towers. He holds a lot of anger and bitterness stemming from his sudden, unjust, tragic loss. At first it surprised me, but I realized that if anyone so much as looks at my little sister the wrong way, they will hear about it from me; I cannot imagine losing her in such a barbaric way. If you are religious, please pray for the families; it is always hard, but I imagine milestone anniversaries are worse.
The war in Afghanistan ended last month after twenty long years. I can only offer my apologies and condolences to the Afghan people; war has ravaged your country and I fear that your immediate future is bleak. I don't know what the answers are, but I do know that the country and its people deserve better than endless wars and brutal terrorist regimes.
I must also mention the American military personnel and our trusted allies from around the world. I know that you followed orders and did your best to fulfill the mission. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be to see all your hard work undone. Let's hope that this is not the end for Afghanistan; thank you for your service. I do believe that you made a positive impact; I think of the generation of girls who went to school and respite from the terrorist regime that you gave the country. Hopefully, we can all learn from this, defeat the terrorists, and somehow rebuild the country in a way that will last.
On this solemn anniversary, I hope that we can come together and remember the sense of true patriotism, the deep compassion, and the overwhelming kindness we felt towards one another and our nation. If we can stand strong in our hearts and minds, then the terrorists have lost; let us be defined not by the smoke from the New York towers or the Pennsylvanian field or the Pentagon, but by the love in our hearts that lead to countless kind deeds that day. "It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in us."--Senator John Kerry "If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate."--Sandy Dahl, widow of Jason, the co-pilot of flight 93

About that New Project (UPDATED)
EDIT: I updated and I added MORE CHARACTERS (something felt imbalanced still and I couldn’t stop lol) and I actually did general descriptions for all of them... They’re not extensive and may change, however.
———
The thing I was talking about in my Soune Taya post...
The Mega Project?
Well... it was going to be a visual novel concept.
But since I have no skill in making a VN, I’m just going to write a story. Like the anime that will be based off the VN. Like Clannad’s anime or something.
It’s going to be long since I have (ahem) FOURTY-SIX (46) WHOLE CHARACTERS WITH ROUTES THAT I’M GOING TO INCORPORATE.
This is why I said I will never ever finish it, even if I devote my entire life to it.
But it won’t feel right without all these characters. I WANT to have all these characters. I’m a “go big or go home” person. I’m too ambitious and I know that.
So.
Here are the characters.
Haku, Neru, Miku, Luka, Teto, Gumi, Meiko, Lapis, Merli, Lily, IA, Yukari, Uta, Zatsune, Rin, Len, Kaito, Akaito, Dell, Gakupo, Yuuma, Piko, Mizuki, Nigaito, Dex, Daina, Ruby, Taya, Longya, Ling, Momo, SeeU, Ruko, Ritsu, Miki, Aku, Bruno, Clara, Iroha, Yuu, Wil, Kyo, Akari, Qingxian, Anon, Kanon In the story adaption, Uta Utane (Defoko) will take the role as the player/main character, and learns everyone’s backstories. She will be the one with the (gigantic) “harem” around her. Think, Tomoya from Clannad. But IF there’s ever an actual game, I’ll plan on Uta being one of the date-able characters. She’ll be your childhood friend.
The characters are all college students here. They are all college-age, roughly between 18-26, depending on which character. I may give them specific ages eventually.
Here are descriptions I thought of already. For some of these Loids, this is my first time EVER writing or portraying them. Ever.
(Full names are listed in Western order. This is partly due to the story taking place in the USA, in a “Japantown” sort of place to explain the prominent Japanese population.)
——————————————————
Haku Yowane- A shy, gloomy girl who is looking to join in the school’s choir... However, the choir doesn’t have enough members. And it’s not like Haku is a good enough singer to singlehandedly bring it back to life... or confident to work up the courage to even audition. Haku seems to depend on Neru, her only friend, to comfort her when she gets down. Haku is the cousin of the popular Miku Hatsune, the most popular girl in the school and star singer in the choir. Neru Akita- A tomboy with a hot temper. But inside, she hides delicate feelings. She seems to always be with Haku, cheering her up when she gets down. The two seem to only have each other. Miku Hatsune- A very popular girl and star singer in the choir. A bubbly, cheerful sweetheart. Has lots of friends and is always smiling. Idealistic and doesn’t believe in impossible. Miku dreams big, but apparently she gets very depressed when her dreams are crushed. Luckily that never seems to happen... for now. Luka Megurine- A polite and elegant woman. She can appear aloof and intimidating at first, but is actually just shy. She is half Japanese, a quarter French, and a quarter German. Teto Kasane- A bubbly girl who can be childish. Is playful, weird, and a bit demanding. Very clumsy. Gumi- A girl who can be a bit shy, but once you get past that, Gumi is unique, free-spirited, and chill. She likes art and reading books. She keeps a sketchbook with her at all times. Meiko Sakine- The confident, mature woman of the group. Energetic and loves to party. Still responsible. Like a mother or older sister. Has quite a temper, though she mostly uses it to defend others... Lapis Aoki- Merli’s stepsister, who seems to be the opposite of her. Bubbly and playful, and quite childish. Quite friendly. However, she can be a bit selfish at times. Lapis is Japanese, though her adoptive sister Merli is Indian. Merli Aoki- Lapis’ stepsister, who seems to be the opposite of her. She can seem cold and distant, even a bit harsh at first. But inside, she is very thoughtful and willing to help those important to her. Merli is Indian, though she was adopted into Lapis’ Japanese family after the death of her parents. Lily- The school’s toughest female delinquent. IA- An idolized girl in the school for her good looks and singing skills. However, she hides dark feelings? Yukari Yuzuki- Half sister to Akari Kizuna. Looks up to IA but also feels she will never be as good as her. Uta Utane- A rather plain, bluntly-spoken person who doesn’t see much in life. Usually bored, silent, and rather deadpan. Once a bright girl with lots of dreams. Deep inside, she is passionate and caring, really... Can it be restored? She is non-binary, going mostly by she/her. Miku Zatsune- Edgy and hates Miku. She would rather be called Zatsune, because her first name happens to be Miku, like the person she despises so much... But could there be something deeper to her? Rin Kagamine- Rin is a bit chaotic. She is bold, brash, athletic, and charming. She is also just plain nuts. Len Kagamine- Len fries to be cool and hip, but he is just a big dork. He is quite the comedian however, sometimes unintentionally. Kaito Shion- Kaito is a silly boy. He loves ice cream, unicorns, rainbows, and anything fluffy. But he also has moments of seriousness where he says really deep, philosophical things. He is quite romantic. Akaito Shion- Akaito is a sarcastic and grumpy boy, but when it comes to romance, he gets quite passionate. He sometimes flirts around with girls, but when he finally finds a true love with a girl (or guy) who truly changes his life... well... it’s a bit different. Dell Honne- Dell is usually in a bad mood. He currently lives with a father who barely acknowledges him. He tends to keep it all inside, and he’s really just lonely and needs to find someone to vent to. He enjoys computer programming and composing electronic music. He is Haku’s half-brother, but they didn’t grow up together. Gakupo Kamui- Gakupo likes doing kendo and martial arts, and is generally athletic. He is a nice guy who also loves animals and history. He seems serious, but can be unexpectedly silly sometimes. He likes embracing his Japanese and Ainu heritage. Yuuma- Yuuma likes music and is quite popular. He may seem hard to approach, because sometimes he doesn’t know what to say. He is a little blunt at times, but has a good heart. He has a crush on Mizuki. Piko Utatane- Piko is a genius who loves astronomy and excels in mathematics and physics. He is a shy and compassionate person, but whenever he opens his mouth, he sounds very strict. He is bad at socializing and making friends, which leaves him quite lonely. On top of that, he is sickly and absent from school often. Piko wishes to make a friend. His first friend in the school is Lapis Aoki, who pretends to be a fairy to grant his wish. After a while, Lapis declares that she wants to be Piko’s friend. Mizuki- Mizuki is a singer who also plays the a Japanese harp (koto.) She is quite a charming person and seems to flirt with many people... even girls... but not Yuuma. Since Yuuma has a crush on Mizuki, this discourages him. Nigaito Shion- The youngest of the three Shion bothers. Nigaito’s nicknames are Nini and Nii. He is rather sickly, but remains to have a warm and pure heart. Dex- Daina’s childhood friend. Best friends, even though they are of completely different genders, and with very different personalities. Some people wonder how it works. Dex is silly, fun, a bit of a party animal, but he is still very caring and compassionate. He just needs a bit of help devoting himself to his studies. But he is quite intelligent when he is focused. He is Black, Creole, and is learning French. Daina- Dex’s childhood friend. Best friends, even though they are of completely different genders, and with very different personalities. Some people wonder how it works. Daina likes to study and learn, and doesn’t like atmospheres like parties so much. She prefers quiet, peaceful places. She may seem a bit distant on the outside, but she is just a little shy. She is White, with English and French heritage. Ruby- Ruby is rather confident, yet nice, and will always give people a helping hand. She is Black and Latina. Taya Soune- Taya is incredibly polite, bowing at many occasions and also offering to do favors a lot. He speaks very formally. He is non-binary, but go mostly by he/him. Longya Yuezheng- A quite serious man who is dutiful and studious. Protective over his younger sister, Ling, and monitors her safety constantly. This is due to Ling nearly getting into a tragic accident when they were younger, traumatizing Longya. He is Chinese. Ling Yuezheng- Ling is a hardworking student, however she has a playful side and she feels lonely that she doesn’t have many friends and is devoting her life to studying. Momo Momone- A peaceful, sleepy girl. Rather low-energy and tranquil. However, Momo has quite a temper when it comes to injustice. SeeU- A rather eccentric, bold and energetic girl with “the light of the stars in her eyes.” She is Korean. Ruko Yokune- Ruko is one of the most mature characters, having a lot of wisdom about life and many experiences. However, they still have moments where they need a helping hand. Ruko is non-binary, mostly going by she/her or they/them. Ritsu Namine- Ritsu is rather brash, but means well. He is non-binary and mostly go by he/him. Miki- Loves romance anime/manga and is obsessed with “cute couples.” A true fangirl. Acts cute and animated. Iroha’s best friend. Aku Yamine- Hates her name, because it’s pronounced the same as the word for “evil” in Japanese. Prefers to be called Akurin. Aku is a very nice and naive, somewhat clumsy girl with big dreams. Is half Black and half Japanese. Bruno- Black Latino, lived in the Dominican Republic. Polite and soft-spoken, but a talented guitarist. Clara- From Colombia, and is Latina. A rather doting girl who somehow feels like both a mother and a little sister. Iroha Nekomura- Loves cute things and stuffed animals. Is kind of insecure and doesn’t find herself very cute, though her best friend Miki constantly reassures her. Yuu- A sweet, cheerful guy who is always filled with energy. Half English, half Japanese. He is in a band with Wil and Kyo called ZOLA PROJECT. Wil- A sophisticated, fashionable guy who is quite outgoing. He is Black. He is in a band with Yuu and Kyo called ZOLA PROJECT. Kyo- A wild, energetic guy who is always raring to go. He is Japanese. He is in a band with Yuu and Wil called ZOLA PROJECT. Akari Kizuna- Yukari Yuzuki’s half-sister. Cheerful and sweet, and wants to make others smile... even though many heavy thoughts are hiding behind her own smile. Qingxian Mo- She seems very nice, but she’s actually a bit self-absorbed. Since her name is hard to pronounce for English-speakers, she insists on being called Qing (pronounced like Ching.)
