I loooove the jp fandom's headcanon that geeta and larry are childhood friends who met during their time in the academy and, sometime in the future, geeta personally recruited larry to work for the paldean pokemon league, as she must be one of the first people who knew of his prowess in pokemon battling! Like yeah, the whole geeta being a "strict boss who is frustrated by larry's stubborn insistence to be an average worker that she has to assign him different workloads just to broaden his horizon" idea is intriguing, but stepping it up a notch by making geeta be the "best friend a.k.a the only one who has seen larry at his very best and his very worst, and knows for a fact that he could excel at anything he put his mind into if he steps out of his comfort zone, so she doesn't particularly drag him out of said zone, but pushes him out of it each time she can because she can't bear to see her best friend be unaware of the good chances and positive things that awaits him out there, not if she has a (small) say in it" is also downright hilarious 😭🤚

just thinking about how it’ll cause a rift in their relationship. he feels so inferior to his lover. to watch someone else (who might not even be trying to pursue knowledge) gain acknowledgment from nous, when all of his life he’s been vying for a place in the genius society, makes him feel so conflicted.

he loves them dearly, but he can’t help what he’s feeling. it’s soul-crushing, and he can no longer look at them the same way. their words of comfort are lost on him when he knows that they’ve got potential to join the genius society.

ooh but what could impact him even more is the fact that his lover refuses. they don’t want to take a part in the genius society. 2 ways:

rejecting because they really aren’t bothered about the pursuit of knowledge, nor are they bothered about nous’ acknowledgment. this infuriates ratio further — they had a chance to meet nous, ask a question, be part of the elites — and yet they refused? he’s baffled, irritated and just heavily conflicted on how to feel about you.

rejecting because they feel it’s unfair to ratio, but perhaps to make a point? they explain to ratio that value in oneself doesn’t need to proved to another, that his knowledge is very much enough and maybe comfort him — show that his achievements have merit, tell him that they don’t care about anyone else’s acknowledgement but his. very fluffy. he can react in either way — touched that his lover would refuse something so great, just for him, or be infuriated and baffled like the idea above.

maybe an argument ensues. and again, that argument could end in two ways, depending if you want it to be angsty or not hehe— dr. ratio is angry at first, but melts into your arms, so surprisingly vulnerable as he tells you of his sorrows and insecurities of not being able to join the society. OR it’s a REALLY big argument… and angst ensues….

Yeees Ratio will have mixed emotions after this incident. What do you mean they don't want to join the genius society? This is a unique opportunity that only an idiot would refuse. It seems to me that he really believed then that the genius Society was something wonderful that only the best deserved.

The moment Ratio learns of [name]'s decision to refuse the invitation, he becomes even more disappointed. Even words of love will not calm him down. And because of the accumulated disappointment, he will flare up and a quarrel will begin, several offensive words will fly towards his lover, and before he realizes what he said, [name] leaves him alone. This will increase the distance between them. But Veritas will remain a stubborn jerk who will never be the first to apologize. In the end, everything could turn into a breakup, because [name] will no longer be able to tolerate Ratio’s behavior, which at that moment resembled an offended child.

Or things could end more smoothly. Ratio decides to give in to his feelings, he sees that [name] sincerely loves him, an understanding comes to him, biggest loss for him is not the rejection of the genius society and not how Nous ignores him, but his beloved, who always supported and inspired him. And when Ratio hears that [name] refused his invitation, he will not be able to contain his emotions, leading to a touching moment between the two of them. However, he will be left with a little disappointment and self-doubt, but at least the [name] is there to help him deal with it.

When Lan Huan invites him to their “grand occasions” date spot, Meng Yao knows what to expect. This was their first date restaurant, a place expensive enough that Meng Yao had been on pins and needles the whole time - yet casual enough that Lan Huan had worn just jeans, a T-shirt and a fancy leather wrap bracelet, distracting enough in itself to get Meng Yao through dinner without panicking. 

It has been seven months since then and they’ve been going steady, but Meng Yao knew it in his bones that it couldn’t last. Experience tells him all good things come to an end, and this has been the best thing to happen to him yet, so it stands to reason that Lan Huan took him here for one last bout of nostalgia. One last expensive dinner bestowed on the food stamps kid, before he likely tells him they simply aren’t going to work out. The thought infuriates him, even though he knows Lan Huan likely sees it as a kindness. No text breakups for Lan Huan, he is too pleasant and tactful for that level of disrespect.

Meng Yao isn’t being paranoid. He has irrefutable evidence that the Lan family, as a whole, detests him. He has met Lan Huan’s uncle and guardian exactly once, and the man obstinately refused to even look at him. Lan Huan’s brother is worse, somehow, because he stares at him intensely every time they cross paths and couldn’t even muster paltry pleasantries when Lan Huan introduced them.

It is hard not to draw a logical connection between their different lots in life and the Lan family's stubborn cold shoulder towards Meng Yao. It is entirely unsurprising that old money elite like the Lans would turn up their nose when Meng Yao started skulking around their heir - who wouldn’t be suspicious? Except it had been Lan Huan who sought him out, Lan Huan who asked him out, Lan Huan who seemed trepidant that he would be turned down, absurdly.

So even though his family obviously disapproves, Meng Yao had to conclude that Lan Huan himself genuinely liked him. He doesn’t think himself particularly lovable, but he can tell Huan-ge is not the type to fuck someone he does not genuinely care for. Small mercies.

It had been nice while it lasted, but the signs are now clear - halfway through the date Lan Huan started minutely fidgeting with his watch, looking down at his lap rather than holding prolonged eye contact as he usually does. Meng Yao eats his fancy dinner in bitter silence.

“A-Yao…” Lan Huan finally says over the organic tiramisu they’ve been picking at. “You have probably already guessed I have something to say.”

Meng Yao takes a deep breath and holds it in his lungs, a buoy to keep himself afloat. “Go on, Huan-ge.”

Lan Huan shakes his head for a moment, then takes out a little box and slides it gently across the table. Meng Yao stares at it blankly. 

“I had a speech,” Lan Huan begins, “but I don’t really think it was good enough for this. So I will just come out and say it. A-Yao, would you… consider marrying me?”

Meng Yao can count on one hand the times in his life he’d been utterly poleaxed, and this one firmly tops them.

“You… want to get married?” he blurts out, forgetting all about composure. “There is absolutely no way your uncle will approve.”

Lan Huan’s brow crumples elegantly and he looks down, his fingers tracing the little velvet box almost stubbornly. “It’s 2023, A-Yao. I do not need anyone’s permission to get married.” 

“But… but your family hates me,” Meng Yao stammers, brain trying to recalibrate itself too quickly. He’d been steeling himself to smile in the face of a breakup, and the face-turn is making his head spin.

“Why would you think so?” Lan Huan asks, in his gentle but diplomatic voice that means Meng Yao is right on the money.

“Huan-ge,” Meng Yao huffs. “Your uncle pretends I do not exist and your brother looks cross every time he is reminded that I do. I am pretty sure he had someone run a background check. It is very obvious that they have something against me.”

Lan Huan’s handsome face twists into a rare expression of discomfort. It would be fascinating, if it weren’t for the fact that Meng Yao hates to make Huan-ge unhappy for any reason.

“Is there… something you think they should hold against you?” Lan Huan finally asks, delicately but intently. He lets the question hang for much longer than it would normally be polite, looking half hopeful and half terrified.

Meng Yao can't help a frown. Other than being born poor, what crime has he ever committed? In another situation he’d pout to get Huan-ge to fuss over him, but this time his confusion is entirely genuine. ”Well. I didn’t go to Harvard, for one,” he tries to joke. “I assume your uncle wanted you to date among peers.”

“A-Yao’s academic and professional results speak for themselves. But,” Lan Huan sighs thoughtfully, “I am aware that people will often look at labels and no further. I promise you, Uncle is not such a person. He will come around once he realizes how much you have achieved on your strength alone. Don’t let anyone’s expectations get in the way of your ambition.”

Sometimes Lan Huan seems wise beyond his years - Meng Yao initially wrote it off as a by-product of his being obscenely educated, but on occasion his observations hit too close to home in a very personal way. It is almost unnerving. 

“If you know my ambitions, you know that I do not want to marry rich,” Meng Yao murmurs, reaching out for the velvet case. He does not dare open it.

“I know,” Lan Huan promptly replies. “My proposal is entirely selfish. I would be the one with the most to gain if you said yes.”

Meng Yao chuckles sadly. “You are such a charmer, Huan-ge. There is no need to flirt at this point.”

“It’s no flirting, A-Yao,” Lan Huan says, staring at him with that deep-water gaze that occasionally seems to see beyond Meng Yao. “I am certain that I do not wish to live a life without you. If… If you also want me.”

Meng Yao has goosebumps, and he is not certain if it is because of Lan Huan’s unusual intensity or the enormity of the commitment he is considering. But that glimmer of uncertainty on his boyfriend’s gentle features is unacceptable, so he has to reach across the table to peck a kiss on his lips. 

When he sits back down he opens the little box, almost fearful of finding a diamond too big to wear in public. He needn't have worried - Lan Huan, while a romantic, is never a show off. His sentiment is shown through care rather than big displays. The engagement ring sitting in the little velvet case is a gold band with a bluish-green inlay, rather masculine and simple in design. 

“Jade?”

“Jade,” Lan Huan smiles, though Meng Yao has never seen him so nervous. “Do you like it?”

The ring fits perfectly, of course. Magically so. “Yes.”

He’d say he must have done something right in his past life to get a man like this if he believed in that stuff. But the point remains that Lan Huan is offering his heart in a little velvet case, and he simply cannot imagine not taking it. The thought of anyone else ever making Lan Huan squirm like this, care like this, plead like this, fills Meng Yao with turbid jealousy, immediately replaced with the taste of triumph. His answer was a rather foregone conclusion, he supposes.

“Alright.”

“Is that a…”

“Yes.”

His fiance rises to hug him tight, making him sputter through laughter as a glass is upturned in the process. He hugs back, and squeezes his eyes shut. His vision is swimming, for some reason.

When he finally releases him, Lan Huan’s eyes are red but he is grinning widely, nearly looking half his age from sheer joy. “Go on,” he says, “call your mother. I’ll go get the check so you can tell her about how I almost utterly fumbled this.”

Meng Yao pretends to be scandalized for a moment, then waves him off with a laugh and takes a picture of his ring finger to text to his mama. 

After dinner they have excellent celebratory sex at Meng Yao’s apartment - it gets so enthusiastic that Lan Huan even forgets that weird foreplay of his, the “kissing-Meng-Yao’s-heart-until-it tickles” thing. Meng Yao enjoys his oddities, truth be told, but today he’s too well fucked to notice that Lan Huan forgot about his routine until the third round. Perhaps engagement sex just hits differently. 

“Need to buy a desk and an easel,” Lan Huan murmurs against his nape in the sleepy, sweaty afterglow. 

“What?” Meng Yao garbles back, ready to drop off at a moment’s notice.

“For me. Moving in. I assume A-Yao doesn’t want to move into the Lan’s family home with uncle.”

Meng Yao giggles hysterically, then reaches back to stroke Lan Huan’s hair approvingly. “Tomorrow, then.”

Irrational, caliginous thoughts crowd his half-asleep self, even as he drifts off into warmth. Sometimes he wonders if Lan Huan knows him better than he knows himself. Foresight is the only explanation for these occasional strokes of genius that manage to put even him on the backfoot. 

But that can’t be right… if he did, he’d know better.

He tries to reason with his unconscious, but the darkest part of his dormant mind worries that Lan Huan wouldn’t have approached him all those months ago if he truly, truly knew him. 

If he truly knew all about him, Er-ge would know to stay away.

It’s a good thing Huan-ge doesn't know, then.

I'm loving your Wilmon fic so very very much! I was feeling mostly done with YR and all related media and ready to let it go - in a happy, pleased-with-season-3, it's all wrapped up and my hectic job is demanding my attention way - and then it was like your fic just broke through my walls and reminded me why I fell in love with the show and its characters. Your Wille and Simon are so good to each other. Their anticipation and nerves and exhilaration as they begin to reconnect - it's everything.

I was surprised to see it's your first YR fic! I'm curious about your story of finding the show - when did that happen for you, when did you first feel inspired to create this beautiful extension of the YR world?

I discovered YR literally on day one! Or even before day one, because I remember scrolling through Netflix’s coming soon page and watching the teaser. I remember thinking it looked like an Elite-type trashy teen show but that I would probably watch it because it’s Swedish (I love Nordic languages). Then on July 1, 2021, at like 10 pm, I was looking for something to numb my brain and YR popped up on the Netflix homepage and I thought, oh I think that's the Swedish show I said I’d watch, let’s give it a try. So I watched the first episode and needless to say it did not numb my brain, I was immediately hooked. But I decided to be responsible and go to bed, and I watched eps 2-4 the next day, and then the day after that was a Saturday and beautiful weather so I went on a hike, and all the time I was trudging up hills I kept thinking “omg omg Wilhelm and Simon are so cute and August is such an asshole omg omg what is going to happen I need them to live happily ever after”. So yeah, I’ve been obsessed from the start 😂

I was never inspired to write fic for it before because I tend to prefer canon to be complete before I write anything, but mostly because I have this weird mental block about reading/writing fic in a different language than the one I consumed the original in. It just doesn’t sound right! (I watch the show in Swedish with English subtitles, so I want fics to also be in Swedish with English subtitles. Yes I know it doesn’t make sense). I guess the inspiration for ‘maybe now’ was strong enough for me to overcome that but tbh it still doesn’t sound right and I have to do weird mental gymnastics to write it 😂

Inspiration for the fic struck very shortly after the show, this is a post I made on March 19:

Ok so who's writing a fic where Simon didn't notice Wille running after the car, or noticed him but couldn't bear to talk to him again, and they have no contact for a year until Wille's decision to give up the crown is made public on his 18th birthday, prompting Simon to reach out and tell him how proud and happy for him he is?

And then I guess I didn’t wait for an answer and wrote it myself!

The inspiration came from the fact that while I love the ending we got and I am so happy that we got it, I do agree with people who think that it was rushed. Given what the first 17 episodes were like, we got the best possible episode 18, but in an ideal world, I would have liked another season, or the three seasons to have more episodes, or the episodes that we got to have a different pacing so that there was more time between the breakup and them getting back together. This is what I wrote in a reaction post after the first five episodes:

If this weren't the last season, I think I'd want them to break up now, take some time apart and get back together after some separate personal growth. But there simply isn't time for that.

One thing about me is that I love it when characters go their separate ways, have some separate growth and find out that they can live without each other, but they just really don’t want to. So in a way it’s a kind of fix-it fic for me.

A book recommendation for Felice in Young Royals, that will make her feel seen and understood, is Young Adult novel, Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-íyímídé.

This Get Out meets Gossip Girl inspired thriller, is perfect for lovers of Dark Academia.

Set in an elite all white high school, where the only two Black kids, Devon and Chiamaka, start to feel that all is not right in their last year of school. Their dreams for their future, and their lives, are at risk from a mysterious entity called Aces.

Chiamaka is also the popular girl in her school and is mixed-race like Felice. This book was published the month before Young Royals season one came out, so I would totally recommend d it to be on Felice's tbr. It's also featured in Heartstopper Season one episode one - Isaac is reading it at Charlie's sleepover party.

The author Faridah, who is Black-British, queer and Muslim, was writing Ace of Spades during her first year at a Scottish university, aged 19. The book was part inspired by her experiences there.

About the teenage friendships in Ace of Spades, Faridah has said:

"Something that gets left out of t.v. shows and books often is how much friendship means a lot to teenagers. I think friendship breakups are more common and more hurtful than romantic ones when you're growing up, because those are your main relationships. I really wanted to highlight how toxic friendships and unhealthy relationships can look like. As well as ones that are good but flawed. I think it's really important to show teenagers that. When I was younger there were so many friendships I had that were definitely toxic but I had no words to articulate why they were because I guess everybody's desperate for friendship and nobody wants to be alone."

Mayfield's Magic: Buccaneers Stun Lions in 20-16 Thriller | NFL Week 2 Upset

This team is for real…

In a thrilling rematch of last season's playoff clash, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers exorcised their Detroit demons with a gutsy 20-16 victory over the Lions at Ford Field. This time, it was the Bucs who roared loudest in the Lions' den, led by the gritty determination of quarterback Baker Mayfield and a defense that refused to break despite missing key players.

From the opening whistle, it was clear this wasn't the same Buccaneers team that fell short in January. Mayfield, the newly minted leader of Tampa Bay's offense, orchestrated a masterful performance that blended poise with playmaking ability. His stats might not leap off the page – 12 completions for 185 yards and a touchdown – but Mayfield's timely scrambles and clutch throws kept the Bucs' offense moving against a relentless Detroit pass rush.

"We stick together," Mayfield declared after the game, his voice brimming with the confidence of a quarterback who's found his footing. "Building chemistry, building resiliency, the culture we want – this is a huge win for us."

Nowhere was Mayfield's impact more evident than on the game-winning drive in the third quarter. With the Lions having just taken their first lead, Mayfield responded like a seasoned veteran. He scrambled for a crucial first down, then followed it up with an 11-yard designed run that saw him break tackles en route to the end zone. It was a statement play that screamed, "This is my team now."

But Mayfield wasn't alone in his heroics. Chris Godwin, the versatile wide receiver, put on a clinic in the first half, hauling in seven catches for 117 yards and a spectacular 41-yard touchdown down the left sideline. Godwin's ability to find soft spots in the Lions' defense gave Mayfield a reliable target. It kept the Detroit secondary on their heels throughout the game.

Perhaps the most inspiring storyline, however, was Tampa Bay's defense's performance. Despite missing All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr., defensive lineman Calijah Kancey, and Vita Vea to a knee injury after halftime, the Bucs' defense bent but never broke against one of the NFL's most potent offenses.

Safeties Christian Izien and Jordan Whitehead stepped up in a big way, combining 20 tackles and making the game-saving stop on Jahmyr Gibbs on a critical fourth-down play late in the fourth quarter. Cornerback Zyon McCollum, coming off of concussion protocol, responded with a first-quarter interception and four passes defensed, including a clutch breakup in the game's final moments.

"We showed a lot of heart," Head Coach Todd Bowles said, pride evident in his voice. "That's a great team over there. We were a little undermanned, they were a little undermanned. It's a good win."

The victory pushed Tampa Bay to 2-0, matching their start from last season. But there's a different feeling around this team—a sense of resilience and unity that was palpable in the postgame locker room. Mayfield's leadership, combined with the defense's next-man-up mentality, has given the Buccaneers a newfound swagger.

As the team heads back to Tampa, they carry with them more than just a win. They've proven to themselves and the rest of the NFL that they can go toe-to-toe with the conference's elite, even when the odds are stacked against them. In the unpredictable world of the NFL, that belief can be the difference between a good team and a great one.

The road ahead is long, and as Coach Bowles reminded everyone, "We won the first two games last year and you see what happened after that." But for now, the Buccaneers can savor this victory – a testament to their quarterback's moxie, receiver's brilliance, and defense's heart. The Breakup

In the spacious apartment in the upper west side of the city, only the elite played their games here. The two men sat across from one another at the coffee table. Usually, they were chatting about their days and past times, but tonight wasn’t like their regular evenings. It was…tense to say the least. Neither male spoke a word, just stared into one another’s eyes. Zahar observed Vale with an accusatory look. His pink irises burned with a fury Vale just smirked at.

“You’re being dramatic again, dear.” Vale was the first to break the silence. 

“You’re being an asshole again.” Zahar was quick to retort. He folded his arms over his chest in a manner that said he wouldn’t back down from his point. Vale wasn’t quite sure what the point was, but that didn’t stop him from being unconcerned about tonight. 

“How often must we go through this, Zahar? You knew exactly what you were walking into when we started our relationship. You even enjoy the benefits from my work, might I remind you.” Vale haphazardly waved his hand around the spacious room the men sat in. The penthouse was far from what an average couple lived in. Zahar knew that better than anyone else. Zahar let out a huff. 

“I’m not ignorant, Vale. I know exactly what we have and why we have it. I’m just saying why do we need any more? Can’t we be happy with this?” Zahar leans forward on the loveseat he currently occupies. 

“Can’t we be happy without having you play bloody God?”

Vale’s eyes narrowed at his lover. “Dear. You know I can’t just stop what I do. It’s my life’s work. As much as you might hate it, I love it. I love the look on someone's face when they realise they’re about to meet their maker, if there is one. The power I have over people’s lives. It’s…exhilarating! Nothing beats that feeling.”

“Not even me?” 

Vale blinks blankly at Zahar before standing up and slowly approaching him. 

“Zahar, dear. You’re my world but there’s only so much you can give and I’d rather you not end up on the other side of me.” Vale sits beside Zahar, their thighs touching. Vale tries to reach for Zahar’s hand but it’s slapped away harshly. 

“I can only give so much?! I give you my everything and yet your job means more to you?! How could you fucking compare me to that!” Zahar stands up and in one quick movement before striding towards the door of their shared apartment. He quickly pulls on a jacket, one given to him by Vale, and the keys to his motorcycle. The helmet was discarded somewhere but at this moment, Zahar couldn’t care less about all the little details. 

“Dove, you know that’s not what I meant…” Vale tries to plead with his lover. He stood and reached out for Zahar once more. “I love you Zahar. I’ve killed for you. How else could I prove that I cherish you?” The tone of the pink haired male is soft, almost as if afraid to break glass. 

“Quit for me.”

All the air in the room seems to have been sucked out through some force. It’s icy and still. Vale looks at Zahar with pity in his eyes. Zahar had the keys in the front door’s lock before Vale answered. 

“If you truly love me, you’ll quit it. We don’t need any more money. We have enough split between your…work and mine as a designer. We could move across the world to somewhere beautiful. Somewhere we could spend the rest of our days. I could find some new inspiration and shower you the way you’ve showered me. Let ME take care of you for once. Please…if you don’t, then we’re done.”

Vale’s eyes widen slightly at the ultimatum he’s been given. Normally he’s never in this position and to finally be in it makes him more than angry. 

“Then we’re done, Zahar. You can leave now.” Vale turns his back to the taller, maroon haired male. Without another word, Zahar leaves the building with tears in his eyes, but not another word spoken.

We had the pleasure of interviewing BEGINNERS over Zoom video! Difficult times can make or break people. As a society, we've been going through doomsday fatigue, whether since the pandemic started, the Trump administration took office, or before that even. Some people have been struggling more than others for a long time. On top of it all, the rent is too damn high, our rights are falling away, the world is on fire (literally and figuratively), and it feels like everything is entirely out of control. The tiniest thing could be that last straw that separates any of us from our sanity. For BEGINNERS, the alt-pop project of L.A.-based Samantha Barbera, one way to deal with those feelings of despair made itself abundantly clear: say f*ck it. The extra indignant sting on top of everything inspired almost a superhero origin story, whether she's the hero or an agent of chaos to be seen. In addition to all that, Barbera went through a breakup during what felt like the implosion of the world we'd known while watching her rights as a queer woman shrink. Instead of imploding, she got into the studio. And that's how BEGINNERS' If the World Is Ending EP was conceived: as an explosion. Barbera is always writing songs, and putting this record together came after a steady stream of collaborations in studios all over the West Coast. The lead single, "I Hate That I Love Brooklyn," is a raucous anthem full of spikey punk rock guitar that represents the spikey feeling of a toxic relationship—with a person, with the news, with a whole damn city or country. The song started with a hat. No, literally. Producer/Artist and frequent collaborator Matias Mora (K. Flay, Broods, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,) had a blinged-out hat with the word Brooklyn on it and convinced everyone that it had to be where the song was set. For Barbera, collaboration is the key to success.
