Murray 'crowd-sourced' the entries by asking people worldwide to submit words for consideration including annotations.⁣ ⁣ In response, Dr William Chester Minor [Sean Penn], a surgeon & US Civil War Captain now incarcerated for murder at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, submitted over 10K words.⁣ ⁣ 😎: Murray's lack of formal education was of great concern to the Oxford Oversight Committee [OOC], but his understanding of multiple languages & their histories was unique. It wasn't until the 1st A-B volume was published that Murray was formally made a Professor.⁣ ⁣ Suffering from PTSD & intensely paranoid, Minor shot to death an innocent man in front of his kids & wife, Eliza Merrett [Natalie Dormer]. Struggling to support her family after her husband's death, Eliza tried prostitution until eventually accepting Minor's war pension as restitution.⁣ ⁣ A deep affection formed as Minor & Eliza spent time together at the asylum, but he couldn't cope with her forgiveness & brutally castrated himself. Minor later fell into a deep catatonic state after being 'tortured' by the asylum's psychiatrist, Dr. Richard Brayn [Stephen Dillane], to purge him of his mental illness.⁣ ⁣ Despite his own battles with the OOC who had discovered that Murray had credited a 'madman' for his help in compiling the dictionary, Minor's mental state only improved when Murray had him released from the asylum & deported back to the US.⁣ ⁣ 🎭🎭🎭 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝘀 & 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester
I just finished reading this non-fiction book. It’s about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The editor of the OED is Dr. Murray and he sends out an appeal for people to send in quotations for words found in literature. The whole process takes several decades to complete. Over a million quotations are used throughout the dictionary and many thousands of those were sent in by one man, Dr. Minor. He was a former Civil War army doctor who became mentally ill, was retired from the army, traveled to London, murdered a man, and was sentenced to life in an insane asylum. It’s definitely a very strange and melancholy story. Since he comes from a rather well off family and still received an income from the army, he was able to have two cells to himself at the asylum, one which he turned into a library. He has delusions of being persecuted, likely because he was exposed to the war and was required to brand an Irishman’s face who was being punished for desertion. However, he is still quite a scholarly man and when he happened upon Murray’s appeal for help with the dictionary it seemed to fill him with a purpose. He likely found the appeal from book packages that his victim’s widow, Eliza Merrett, brought to him at Broadmoor asylum. His method was to read a book (from the 16th/17th century), make an alphabetical list of all the interesting words and the page they were on and then go on to the next book. By doing so he was able to amass a lot of references for words and he would write to Dr. Murray asking what letter or word they were working on then he would send his quotations in. The two men worked together in this way for about twenty years. As he grew older though, Dr. Minor continued to suffer from mental illness and at one point he cuts off his own penis. His physical condition continues to deteriorate and eventually he is allowed to go back to the USA where he eventually dies.
This story was really intriguing because I didn’t know that the dictionary definition of words were created based on their use in literature. It really demonstrates the fluidity of language and how words can morph and take on new meanings dependent on contemporary society.
It was also interesting to think how a seemingly random chain of events could conspire to help create something so ubiquitous and commonplace as the dictionary.
