Celebrating International Women's Day, 2025
International Women's Day has come back round, so once again I'm celebrating some more of the women I've been admiring of late, as well as some more of those I've been a fan of for a good while already. Here's to some more incredible women!
Tumblr media
DOLLY PARTON. First up needs NO introduction, she's an absolute bloody ICON and one of the hardest working famous women in the world! Not to menton one of the sweetest and most adorably self-deprecating.
Tumblr media
THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT. AKA the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, this incredible 855-strong all-black battalion of the US Women's Army Corps revolutionaised the hopelessly crippled army postal system during World War II, battling racial prejudice and institutonalised misogyny to help win the War through restoring flagging morale from American forces who hadn't heard from their families in YEARS ...
Tumblr media
IDINA MENZEL & KRISTIN CHENOWETH. Yeah, they're both best known for originating the roles of Elphaba, the "Wicked" Witch of the West, and Galinda, the "Good" Witch of the East, in the stage musical of Wicked, the reinvention of The Wizard of Oz, but these two incredible actresses have both played some other pretty iconic roles over the years, both on stage and on big and small screens. Menzel, of course, is also rightly beloved as the voice of Elsa in the Frozen movies, while I first came across Chenoweth through her truly adorable role as Annabeth Schott in The West Wing.
Tumblr media
MARJANE SATRAPI, the incredibly talented French-Iranian graphic novelist, writer-director and children's author. Most people (rightly) know her best through her breakthrough work Persepolis, an autobiographical account of her experiences growing up as a young woman in Iran after the Islamic Revolution (which she subsequently turned into a FUCKING AMAZING animated feature), but she's also responsible for one of the weirdest and most wonderfully baffling Ryan Reynolds film's I've ever seen, The Voices ...
Tumblr media
AVA DUVERNAY, the rightly critically acclaimed writer-director of incredibly important films like Selma, Origin and the documentary feature 13th. Okay, so she also made the decidedly meh adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time, but we can't have everything ...
Tumblr media
CHAPPELL ROAN. Hot damn, what an incredible few years this incredible former up-and-coming, now very much BREAKOUT young musical STAR has had. The massive success of her debut album The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess, followed by her runaway MEGAHIT single Good Luck Babe have really put this genuine LGBT+ ICON on the map in a MAJOR WAY, and I foresee great things in her future.
Tumblr media
ELLEN MacARTHUR, the powerfully inspiring English yachtswoman who won the hearts of entire nations when she broke the World Speed Record for circumnavigating the globe when she sailed solo around the world at just 29 years old.
Tumblr media
BECKETT MARINER & D'VANA TENDI, voiced by Tawny Newsome and Noël Wells in Paramount's best "new" Star Trek series Lower Decks. Gods, I love these two. They're among my absolute favourit Trek characters, like, EVER, and they're both such wonderfully positive role models for nerdy girls of all kinds the world over.
Tumblr media
NICHELLE NICHOLS. Speaking of Trek, how can we forget the women who not only started it all, but also went so far in making a black women appearing on screen in a STARRING ROLE where she's regarded as an EQUAL not only to men but WHITE MEN something that could actually be SO NORMAL. Okay, so there was a still a long road ahead (one wh haven't REALLY seen the end of quite yet), but she really made one hell of a start. Rest in Power, queen. You're sorely missed ...
Tumblr media
RHEA RIPLEY, essentially THE most well known and most incredibly iconic female wrestler of the WWE, if not the entire SPORT. I simply ADORE her take-no-shit attitude, her truly BADASS none-more-GOTH sense of style and her seriously intimidating but also absolutely BEAUTIFUL muscles. She's amazing.
Tumblr media
SALT-N-PEPA. Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa) and Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella) are, quite simply, THE MOST IMPORTANT female hip hop group of all time. Their runaway hit Push It is simply the pinnacle of their massive platinum selling, era defining musical career.
Tumblr media
CASSANDRA PETERSON, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the actress, comedian and bona fide horror icon who pretty much DEFINED the 80s. That being said, she's STILL going strong, and she's just as awesome now as she ever was ...
Tumblr media
VIVIENNE MEDRANO aka VIVZIEPOP, the YouTuber, animator, writer-director, producer AND voice actress responsible for creating not one but TWO of my current favourite animated shows, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Not only is she an incredibly talented creative person, but she's also a total sweeheart, and a true LGBT+ ICON.
Tumblr media
... and last, but by no means least ... TINA TURNER, quite simply one of the most important and amazing singer-songwriters of all time. Even more famous for the hardships she endured and the incredible comeback she achieved than her awesome music, she became a powerful inspiration for survivors of spousal and domestic abuse the world over. She was, quite simply, The Best.

Robots on farms,/small farming future
There are already robot dairies and lots of agricultural machinery companies are investing huge sums into the R and D of automated crop care machinery. This is of course partially fueled by the race to improve the bottom line but also reduce inputs to farms in the way of herbicides and pesticides.
While this is an admirable step forward from the big players in the farming it is clear that this is only part of the picture of any farming future.
For those interested in debating the future of eco friendly farming there has been two distinct schools of thought for a long time.
On the one hand we have Allan savoury and the school of thought which talks of animal agriculture and holistic planned grazing being essential to mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change while still putting the land to good use.
On the other hand you have George Monbiot and his vegan utopia/dystopia with rewinding on much of the now productive land and protein grown in vats.
The illogical nature of this vision of the future and the energy required to create it never seems to interfere with the carbon footprint data from its militant advocates.
For some time those with sense have longed for the publication of a rational argument which would silence and hold to check the insistence of the Monbiot world view that "organic farming won't work at scale". Well now thanks to this automation perhaps they are wrong but further to that a third voice has entered the conversation with the claim that we don't need organics at scale. There is a real small farm future if we want it.
When reading, listening and processing the work of Chris Smaje, author of Small Farms Future I am made to think of Dame Ellen MacArthur and her circular economy platform which is reshaping the fashion world making it more sustainable both ecologically and economically. A task so huge it would scare the hell out of anyone else. Ellen is adept at shattering obstacles most people would never dare to put themselves against.
Smaje claims that if the agricultural work force were to grow to 15% of the population there would be enough hands to make a small scale, ecologically diverse, organic farm feed the nation whilst maintaining current import and export targets. Personally I don't have the skill or resources to check his figures but when I consider that 9.5milliin tones of food is wasted each year in the UK it is easy to see that we don't have a food production problem currently but a food logistics problem.
If we bolt on the ever changing face of technology to this world vision as presented by Christ Smaje then perhaps this becomes even more believable.
If job losses are going to be as large as those in AI development and automation r and d claim then we will certainly have that workforce waiting for employment.
Further to this with cheap accounting software available with AI integrated learning models it will be much easier for small farms to work together to offer large crops to those with large contracts like Tesco. Lest we forget that it is the supermarkets who have bastardised our once small farm nation into the humongous farm industries it is today.
This hybrid of technological equipped small diverse farming future might stave off the horrors reaped on the world by the energy sector as it struggles to transform into something more sustainable.
And fingers crossed it really does leave us all better off and not in a matrix or terminator infused future.
You never know, one day Chris Smaje may be given an award like many farmers before for being out standing in his field.

2024 Reading Wrap-Up
In 2024, I read 43 books for fun! (My previous record was 34 in 2023.) This year, I finally got around to reading many books that I'd wanted to read for a decade or more.
30 were nonfiction, 13 were fiction.
23 were by a woman or women (previous record was 11 in 2023), 18 were by a man or men, and 2 were written under collective pseudonyms making the actual authors unknown. I achieved my goal of half or more books read this year being by women.
30 books were by American authors, the rest by non-American authors. (Of those, 4 were by Brits and 3 were by Australians.)
Oldest: The "Mary Celeste" and Other Strange Tales of the Sea, J.G. Lockhart (1952)
Newest: Murder at Beacon Rock, by Alyssa Maxwell (2022)
4 were from the National Geographic Explorer Academy series.
Best: The Wave, in Pursuit of the Rogues, Giants, and Freaks of the Ocean, by Susan Casey (2010) I read the first two chapters in my High School library shortly after this book came out, and I bought my current copy at @strandbooks in 2015, but this one was absolutely worth the wait. It deserves every accolade it got when it came out.
Other Favorites:
At Sea in the City: New York from the Water's Edge, by William Kornblum (2002)
The Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, by Alfred Lansing (1956)
No Horizon Is So Far: Two Women and Their Historic Journey across Antarctica, by Liv Arnesen, Ann Bancroft, and Cheryl Dahle (2003)
The Orbital Perspective: Lessons on Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles, by Ron Garan (2015)
The Planets, by Dava Sobel (2005)
Seeing in the Dark: How Amateur Astronomers are Discovering the Wonders of the Universe, by Timothy Ferris (2002)
Starlight and Storm: The Conquest of the Great North Faces of the Alps, by Gaston Rébuffat (1954)
Taking on the World: A Sailor's Extraordinary Solo Race Around the Globe, by Ellen MacArthur (2003)
Taking the Helm: One of America's Top Sailors Tells Her Story, by Dawn Riley (1995) (Ms. Riley signed my copy when we met back in April! I interviewed her here!)
Worst: The "Mary Celeste" and Other Strange Tales of the Sea, J.G. Lockhart. The title of this book made me expect some fun nautical ghost stories, of variable truth, but really only four of the stories told could be considered "mysterious". Most of them are just "brutish-and-dimwitted mutineers of heavily-emphasized ethnicity speaking broken English as they kill their captains and then wreck the ship because they can't navigate" stories that become kind of uncomfortable in aggregate. (As a Greek-American, it struck me that every Greek seaman described in the book is one of these "shifty mutinous brutes".) Eeeesssh.

Sustainable Fashion: Re-dressing the Future
A multimedia blog series in five parts
WHY THIS MATTERS
Tumblr media
92 million tonnes of textile waste are generated annually — equivalent to a garbage truck full of clothes every single second. Since 2000, the average lifespan of a garment has dropped by 36% while production has doubled. Today, laundry microfibres are the number one source of microplastics found in urban waterways.
Key terms Sustainable fashion = design and production systems that keep materials in circulation at their highest value, all while protecting both people and the planet. Circularity = eliminate waste, maintain continuous product cycles, and restore nature (as outlined in the Ellen MacArthur framework).
MATERIAL REVOLUTIONS
Mycelium Leather
Tumblr media
Cultivated in just 10 days, this alternative leather emits over 90% less CO₂ than traditional bovine leather. It’s naturally antimicrobial and entirely compostable.
Algae-Powered Textiles
Tumblr media
These algae-based yarns absorb CO₂ during growth. Additionally, their waterless dyeing process reduces chemical runoff to nearly zero.
Interactive idea: Create “material cards” comparing water usage, carbon footprint (CO₂e), and end-of-life outcomes for each innovative textile.
DESIGNERS DRIVING CHANGE
Designer Signature Move Impact Snapshot Gabriela Hearst Plastic-free shows; deadstock cashmere First luxury runway to be carbon-neutral (NYFW SS20) Marine Serre 50–60% of each collection upcycled Paris flagship made from reclaimed timber Stella McCartney Mycelium-based bags; bio-rubber soles Led LVMH’s introduction of an internal carbon price
CLOSING THE LOOP
Chemical recycling facilities now have the ability to transform up to 100,000 tonnes of polyester annually back into virgin-quality fiber. In the U.S., states like New York and California are evaluating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws to shift waste disposal costs onto brands. Meanwhile, the 2024 #PowerOfRepair campaign hosted free mending pop-ups in 12 cities.

Global Fashion’s Dirty Secret: How Fast Fashion Exploits Cultures and Communities
In an era where fashion trends change overnight and clothes can be ordered with a few taps, fast fashion seems like a dream. Cheap, accessible, and always "on trend" — what’s not to love? But beneath the racks of affordable clothes lies a harsh reality: fast fashion thrives on cultural exploitation and systemic inequality. Behind each patterned top or tribal-print skirt is often a story of stolen culture, underpaid labor, and environmental destruction.
Fast fashion brands frequently draw "inspiration" from traditional clothing around the world — without credit, compensation, or context. Indigenous beadwork, African prints, South Asian embroidery, and Native American headdresses are often reproduced in mass quantities for profit. These items are stripped of their cultural significance and marketed as exotic trends. For instance, in 2021, Urban Outfitters faced backlash for selling items labeled as "Navajo" without permission from the Navajo Nation. The company was sued for trademark infringement, a rare case where legal action highlighted the deep-rooted issues of cultural exploitation in fashion (Jones, 2021). Similarly, luxury and fast fashion brands alike have mimicked traditional Mexican textiles and patterns, often sidelining the artisans who created them. Cultural elements are not “aesthetic.” They are part of identity, history, and resistance. When large corporations profit from them without acknowledgment or collaboration, it perpetuates a system that benefits the powerful while silencing the marginalized.
Fast fashion’s production pipeline is also built on the backs of vulnerable workers, most of them women in developing countries. Countries like Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, and Cambodia are popular manufacturing hubs due to their cheap labor and minimal regulations. Workers in these countries are often paid far below living wages, work in unsafe conditions, and lack basic labor rights. A tragic example is the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, which killed over 1,100 garment workers in Bangladesh. The factory was producing clothes for major global brands, highlighting the direct connection between Western demand for cheap clothing and unsafe labor practices abroad (International Labor Rights Forum, 2022). While some companies promised reforms after the tragedy, progress has been slow and inconsistent. Despite contributing billions to the global economy, garment workers in the Global South remain impoverished. According to the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (2023), many workers in fast fashion supply chains earn only 20–30% of what they need to support a family. This economic disparity is a form of modern-day colonialism — Western countries continue to benefit from the cheap labor of the Global South without sharing the profits or improving working conditions.
Fast fashion not only harms people during production — it also impacts communities through waste. Every year, 92 million tons of textile waste are generated globally (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2020). While Western consumers discard clothing quickly, many of these garments end up in landfills or are dumped in African and Asian countries, where they clog ecosystems and harm local economies. In Ghana’s capital, Accra, over 15 million used garments arrive weekly, mostly from the Global North. Many are of such poor quality that they’re thrown away immediately, creating mountains of textile waste that pollute waterways and communities (OR Foundation, 2023). This "waste colonialism" forces developing countries to deal with the consequences of overconsumption they did not create.
What can be done to combat the exploitation within the fast fashion industry? First, supporting ethical brands is key. Shop from brands that are transparent about their sourcing, pay fair wages, and collaborate with artisans respectfully. Platforms like Good On You and Fashion Revolution offer helpful guides and brand ratings. Second, respect cultural boundaries by avoiding the use of sacred symbols (like bindis or headdresses) as fashion statements and instead buying directly from creators or businesses run by people from those cultures. Ethical consumerism is about asking the question: Am I honoring or appropriating? Third, embracing slow fashion is crucial. Buy less and wear more — slow fashion values quality over quantity. Thrift, repair, and rewear. Each garment reused is a blow against the fast fashion machine. Finally, advocate for policy change by supporting legislation that enforces fair labor practices, protects Indigenous intellectual property, and penalizes environmental violations.
Fast fashion isn’t just a personal choice — it’s a global issue. It reflects systems of power, inequality, and exploitation that stretch from factory floors in Dhaka to storefronts in New York. To be a responsible global citizen, we must look beyond price tags and trends and recognize the true cost of the clothes we wear. Fashion can be beautiful, but only if it’s rooted in respect — for people, cultures, and the planet.

How social media create the over-consumption trend in fashion
Week 6: Digital Citizenship Case Study: Social Media Influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement
Ever opened your closet, seen it stuffed with clothes, and still thought, “I have nothing to wear!”? You’re not alone. That urge to buy more - new trends, endless options, the “perfect” wardrobe - is universal. But what fuels it, and why does it matter?
Tumblr media
Overconsumption (aka buying way more than you need) is rampant in fashion. It’s not about buying things you love or need - it’s about hoarding both pricey and cheap, trendy pieces you’ll barely wear. Think: impulse-buying 10 nearly identical tank tops just because they’re $5 each (and trendy). Fast fashion brands like Shein, Zara, and H&M thrive on this. They mass-produce ultra-affordable, hyper-trendy clothes, luring us into endless “hauls” and guilt-free splurges (Rosely & Ali, 2023). But here’s the kicker: this cycle isn’t just draining your wallet - it’s wrecking the planet. The cost? Exploited workers, rivers polluted by dyes, landfills overflowing with barely-worn clothes, and a culture where “new” trumps “usable” (Vasquez, 2022). Fast fashion’s “wear-it-once” mindset means we’re trapped in a loop: buy, toss, repeat.
I fully blame social media for having profoundly reshaped consumer behavior in the fashion industry, driving overconsumption through psychological and social mechanisms. Below, I explore three key factors - the "influencers effect," the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) phenomenon, and the pursuit of validation - supported by academic research.
The "Influencers Effect": Promoting aesthetic ideals and fast fashion
Social media influencers cultivate aspirational lifestyles characterized by curated aesthetics, health, and productivity. Instagram influencers significantly impact purchase intentions by encouraging parasocial relationships, where followers perceive influencers as relatable "friends" whose recommendations they trust. This dynamic drives impulsive buying, particularly among young audiences (Djafarova & Bowes 2021). Moreover, by showcasing frequent outfit changes and partnerships with fast-fashion brands, they normalize constant consumption. Followers are encouraged to emulate these ideals, often purchasing inexpensive, trend-driven items in bulk. This cycle fuels overproduction and waste, as fast fashion relies on rapid turnover of low-quality garments.
Tumblr media
(Video source: https://www.tiktok.com/@llindseycooper/video/7412710548095225130)
The FOMO Effect: Trend chasing and disposable fashion
Baltezarevic (2024) linked FOMO to impulsive buying behaviors, noting that social media users fear judgment for not adhering to trends, leading to short-term purchases with little practical use. FOMO exacerbates overconsumption as users, especially teenagers, rush to acquire trending items (e.g., "babyt tees") to avoid social exclusion. These purchases often lack sentimental value, unlike curated collections, and are quickly discarded when trends shift. The result is a "buy-and-dispose" culture, contributing to textile waste - a problem highlighted by the 92 million tons of annual fashion waste reported by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Tumblr media
Seeking validation: Erosion of independent thought
Social media platforms prioritize validation metrics (likes, shares), conditioning users to equate self-worth with external approval. Vogel et al. (2017) demonstrated that social comparison on platforms like Instagram lowers self-esteem, prompting users to seek validation through material acquisition. Teens, whose identities are still developing, may internalize influencers’ opinions, stifling critical thinking. This creates a cycle where individuals consume to gain acceptance, perpetuating overconsumption and reducing the capacity for autonomous decision-making.

The Rise of Slow Fashion, Thrifting, and the “Less is More” Mindset
Let’s be real: For years, fast fashion had us in a chokehold. We’ve all fallen for the dopamine hit of a $10 dress or a TikTok-viral “haul.” But lately, a quiet revolution is brewing - one that’s swapping mindless consumption for intentionality, and Shein hauls for thrifted treasures. Here’s how the slow fashion movement, thrifting culture, and the “underconsumption” trend are flipping the script.
The Anti-Shein Influencers: For every influencer hawking 50-piece fast fashion hauls, there’s another preaching the gospel of slow fashion. These creators are the cool aunts of Instagram and TikTok, showing off capsule wardrobes, styling the same blazer six ways, and turning old jeans into tote bags. Their mantra? Buy less, choose well, make it last.
Take @thanyaw_ on TikTok, for example, who challenges followers to rewear outfits without shame. Or @sophia.lynette, who teaches DIY clothing repairs to combat “throwaway culture.” By normalizing repeat wears and upcycling, they’re proving style isn’t about endless newness - it’s about creativity (and saving the planet while you’re at it).

Gen Z’s Thrifting Obsession: Sustainable and Budget-Friendly
Gen Z isn’t just thrifting for vintage band tees (though that’s part of it). They’re raiding Depop, Poshmark, and local thrift stores to score unique finds and reduce textile waste. Why? Because 60% of them say sustainability influences their purchases (Benissan 2023).
Thrifting isn’t just “cheap” - it’s a middle finger to fast fashion’s exploitation. Plus, there’s thrill in the hunt: Finding a Y2K-era Juicy Couture tracksuit or a perfectly broken-in leather jacket feels like a win for your closet and the environment.
Tumblr media
Picture from Macklemore's music video of "Thrift Shop" in 2012
Underconsumption: The “Boring” Lifestyle That’s Going Viral
Meet the underconsumers - people proudly sharing “boring” closets and rejecting the pressure to constantly buy. Think: “5-piece capsule wardrobe” tours or “No-Buy Year” vlogs. Their secret? Gratefulness for what they already own.
This trend isn’t about deprivation; it’s about freedom. By curating a small, loved wardrobe, they avoid decision fatigue, save money, and reduce clutter. As one Reddit user put it: “I stopped buying trendy crap and finally feel like myself.”
__________________________________________
The Bottom Line
Slow fashion, thrifting, and underconsumption aren’t just trends - they’re a cultural reset. They remind us that style isn’t about keeping up with micro-trends but embracing individuality, sustainability, and enoughness. So next time you’re tempted by a flash sale, ask: “Do I really need this—or can I thrift, rewear, or just… skip it?”
The planet (and your wallet) will thank you.

🌿 Order Fabric Online for a Greener Future: From Canvas Cotton to Circular Fashion with Suvetah
In today’s climate-conscious creative economy, sustainable textiles like canvas cotton are no longer niche—they’re essential. From artisan tote bags to durable homeware and ethical apparel, this versatile, organic fabric supports design that’s tough, timeless, and traceable.

🧵 Canvas Cotton: Durable, Biodegradable & Built for Design
Canvas cotton is a heavyweight weave made from organic or conventional cotton yarns, known for its high tensile strength, weather resistance, and easy dyeability. Suvetah’s organic canvas cotton fabric is:
🌿 100% natural and free of harmful synthetics
🧺 Machine-washable and breathable
🎨 Ideal for natural dyeing and screen printing
🔁 Perfect for long-life, multi-use products like reusable shopping bags, workwear, and eco interiors
Compared to synthetic canvas blends, Suvetah’s sustainable cotton canvas is fully biodegradable, free of microplastic pollution, and processed with low-impact, AZO-free dyes.
🔄 Circular Fashion in Action: Where Canvas Shines
Canvas cotton fits seamlessly into circular design principles. This fabric supports fashion systems where materials:
🔁 Stay in use longer through quality construction
♻️ Are reused, re-sewn, or re-dyed over time
🛠️ Can be repaired or upcycled into new pieces
🌿 Eventually return to nature without leaving toxins behind
Suvetah partners with Indian weaving clusters to supply circular-ready canvas textiles—ethically woven, naturally dyed, and packaged plastic-free.

Signy Mallory by Mercedes Lackey and Leslie Fish
Calypso by John Denver
Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac

Dana Katherine Scully by Tacocat
