Laura Dern, Isabella Rossellini, and Kyle MacLachlan in Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986)
Cast: Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern, Hope Lange, Dean Stockwell. Screenplay: David Lynch. Cinematography: Frederick Elmes. Production design: Patricia Norris. Film editing: Duwayne Dunham. Music: Angelo Badalamenti.
Would there have been a Quentin Tarantino if there hadn't been a David Lynch? Blue Velvet represents an opening up of mainstream moviemaking to the perverse underside of American experience. It had been approached before, in 1940s film noir, for example, but only by suggestion. In the era of the nascent Cold War, unusual sexual behavior was typically presented as the product of decadent cities like New York and Los Angeles. But in Lynch's film, made at the height of the Reagan era, it underlies the wholesome atmosphere of a small town where the fireman smiles and waves as he passes by. The film noir detective was usually repulsed by what he saw, not fascinated and drawn in the way Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) is. Jeffrey, barely out of adolescence, teams up to explore the mystery of Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) with a teenage girl, Sandy (Laura Dern), who is both disgusted and fascinated by what she learns. The use of songs like Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet" and Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" suggests the way American pop culture, aimed at the young, floats atop a sea of darkness that it only thinly hides. In the end, of course, everything is cleaned up: the vicious Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper) gets what's coming to him and Dorothy is reunited with her child. Even Jeffrey's father (Jack Harvey), incapacitated by a stroke while watering his lawn at the beginning of the film, is restored to health. Sandy has earlier told us about her nightmare in which the horrors will only disappear when the robins fly down and bring a "blinding light of love." So in the end a robin appears on the windowsill, with one of the disgusting insects we saw at the film's beginning under the grass of the Beaumonts' lawn in its mouth. But Lynch mocks the happy ending by clearly showing us that it's a fake, an animated stuffed robin.

BRT Stop! Findlay Market on Elm St!

ArcGIS mapping of the Over-The-Rhine area including Bus Routes, Stops, Building Footprints, and Sidewalks
ArcGIS mapping of a close-up shot of the bus stop and the route it takes along Elm St.

Bus stop and Findlay Market taken from google maps.

Directly across from the bus stop taken from google maps.
Google maps photos show the area is kept clean and has many shops, and places with seating around. Apart from Findlay Market which is the most popular part of this stop there are many shops as well. Located right in front of the stop is Deeper Roots (coffee shop), BanaSun Smoothie Bar, Rivertown (vintage-inspired clothing store), Cherbourg Cyprus (bakery), Pho Lang Thang (Vietnamese restaurant), Wuf Pet Spa, and Spruce Nail Spa. There is so much to do all within one street.
Findlay Market, located in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, is the oldest continuously operating public market in Ohio, dating back to 1855. Named after General James Findlay, a former Cincinnati mayor, the market was originally an open-air space before being enclosed in the early 20th century. Over the years, it has played a big role in the community, serving as a gathering place for political meetings, social events, and even emergency response efforts. It’s also been the starting point for Cincinnati’s Opening Day parade since 1920. In recent years, Findlay Market has undergone major redevelopment, with new businesses, office spaces, and residential units revitalizing the area. Since 2015, nearly 30 storefronts have been restored, bringing fresh energy to the neighborhood. Public transportation makes getting to Findlay Market pretty convenient, with multiple bus stops nearby on Race and Elm Streets. These routes connect visitors to different parts of the city, making the market an accessible and vibrant spot for locals and tourists alike.

Findlay Market is always buzzing with energy, from fresh produce stands and artisan shops to live music and street performances. The mix of sights, smells, and sounds makes it a unique and inviting place to explore.Right by the BRT stop, you’ll find a variety of shops, cafés, and restaurants that add to the market’s charm. Local favorites offer everything from handmade chocolates, artisan cheeses, and local family-owned restaurants, to international groceries and fresh-baked bread. With easy access to public transit, it’s the perfect place to shop, grab a bite, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Handmade ArcGIS map showing the building types surrounding the stop. CAGIS data and Google Maps Information.
When we visited our stop, we arrived when the automobile was pulling up to the stop. So, we got to see firsthand the efficiency and bustle of the public transportation system at the Findlay Market BRT Stop. There were a few others there, coming to and going from Findlay Market and surrounding businesses. We all thought it was a good place for a bus stop because it accommodates the amount of traffic that the commercial district brings. We noticed all different types of people utilizing the transit system which really allowed us to see how much the system can be developed for anyone; no matter age, disabilities, or income. It's a reliable system that the citizens of Cincinnati can trust to not only improve the environment but get them to their desired location.
The Findlay Market Area is a vibrant, lively place- There's something for everyone here. It's a perfect place to catch a bus, streetcar, or just stop and grab a fresh bagel on your way to your destination.

prequels tend to have a bad reputation just by their very concept - whenever one is announced i feel like general reactions are always in the vein of "we don't need this". while most of the time i get why additions to a franchise that clearly only exist to further capitalize on the brand name are considered pointless, i am a defender of the concept of prequels because when done right they can be really really good. unfortunately they are often not done well.
horror franchise prequels in particular often feel pointless because they aren't really interested in being prequels, or if they are they aren't allowed to be. if it's too different from what most movies in the franchise are like then it's assumed it will not be profitable, so it has to be forced into the same formula. if a movie is billed as THE BEGINNING or ORIGINS or THE FIRST MURDERS you can bet it's going to be indistinguishable from a generic slasher or whatever kind of movie the first one or most of the sequels are, with a new roster of generic characters to be killed off, except this one is taking place Before the events of the first movie. if it's billed as a villain origin story that's probably going to take up the first 15 minutes, max, of the movie before immediately switching to follow the newest crowd of victims. it probably won't even be able to go that far back into the past because then you're basically making a period piece and no one wants to watch that, right?
sometimes prequels fail because the origin story of the villain or the monster didn't need to be told and the original movie is better off without knowing much or anything at all about them, i grant that. but i also will fully admit i'm a big fan of delving into backstory and exploring what shaped a person or led to certain events happening and again it can be done very well. but the kinds of stories that would be most interesting to tell in a film aren't usually the ones that get told in big studio franchises that have to stick to a formula for every film instead of taking what would be seen as too big of a risk. i'm mostly thinking about slashers here because those are some of the most formulaic kinds of horror - prequels to films that don't have a set formula tend to be better executed. also if it's a franchise that doesn't have recurring characters (protagonists or villains) that audiences expect to see then they have a little more freedom.
the first omen was great - i definitely liked it better than the omen, but then again it had enough liberty to do its own thing while still being clearly tied to the original, and it was in the kind of genre that allows for different types of stories. prey was fantastic, and predator is a franchise that has that kind of freedom that comes from no real recurring characters aside from the alien species that serves as its antagonist. (it's also the only predator film i've seen, because you don't need to have seen the other films to understand one of them.) i absolutely loved pearl which IS a slasher prequel but it's to a film that didn't have a franchise built up and also has a director who's enough of an auteur that he could do what he wanted, including releasing both films as more companions than two entries in a series.
i just think prequels aren't an inherently bad idea when it comes to horror franchises. i'd watch a nightmare on elm street prequel about the parents of elm street trying to solve the disappearances of their children before it ends with the trial by mob of one fred krueger (i guess that would just be fritz lang's m but set in 70s-80s ohio. but i mean that could still be a good and interesting story.) i'd watch a friday the 13th prequel about pamela voorhees taking a job at a summer camp and then dealing with the unexpected death of her son, which ends with her deciding to murder the people she blames for it. (i do love a good character study of a murderer; see pearl, albeit a very different kind.) even though i hate the tcm remake i'd watch a full movie about the disenfranchisement of slaughterhouse workers in 1960s texas as seen through the eyes of the hewitt family, who eventually turn to cannibalism to survive. (despite this only being in the opening of the prequel to the remake, i actually think that it's a better movie than the remake itself, due to actually engaging with the themes of the original film and doing more with its specific period setting, and when it does introduce its own victim characters it seems more interested in them as people than its predecessor. don't ask me what leatherface 2017 was trying to do, though - while it definitely does something different it also seems to be actively trying not to be a texas chainsaw movie, which is kind of weird. whatever.)
not that i actively Want any of these films, because really i think most slasher franchises should probably just be left alone at this point. but you do have to appreciate when one actually does something different and interesting with a sequel or prequel that still fits into the franchise's continuity. a shame that those are often unlikely to happen.
(also when people say that a prequel is pointless because "we already know how this ends" or "we already know none of these characters are going to survive"...i just have to accept that they have different ways of engaging with fiction than me because if you genuinely believe that there's no point in watching or reading something if you already have even a vague idea of "how it ends" - i disagree. to each their own i guess.)
#my thoughts#horror movies#idk how to tag this#prequels#maybe i'm just not really a slasher fan but i do like some of them#and my favorite slasher sequels are usually the ones that diverge as far as possible from the Slasher Formula while still working as sequel#so take my opinions as you will
