Today was something getting to play at the @findlaymarket in Cincinnati. The place was pretty amazing and they were having a festival today so people were there from all over. I spoke with some from L.A. to Chicago and who knows where else. London-based Nigerian graphic designer and artist Kingsley Nebechi took a leap from work as creative director to focus on his own work, landing an impressive list of clients of name brand clients. For the 2022 edition of @BlinkCincinnati Festival this Nebechi design was painted near the Pleasant St entrance to @FindlayMarket by local artist Javarri Lewis. Much of Lewis's personal work centers around Black art and the Black family and he says he's also interested in "creating positive things people can see on a daily basis"—interests which come together perfectly in this homage to Black women painted in a bustling part of Cincinnati with a rich and diverse history.

Findlay Market utilizes many of Whyte’s criteria of human scale including sitting spaces. Whyte advocates for the use of moveable chairs. Findlay Market has an outdoor area with moveable chairs and tables. This is great for people to gather and socialize in groups. People can use this area for eating, playing games, or just to hang out. Using moveable chairs provides flexibility for seating because people can choose where they want to sit. This could especially be nice on sunny days so people can decide whether they want to sit out in the sun or under shade. Findlay Market as a whole, and especially this seating area, is very welcoming and encourages people to spend time there, socialize, and try local foods.

Findlay Market also provides good examples of Whyte’s idea of triangulation. The theory is that by creating a positive stimulating environment, human interaction will be encouraged. Findlay Market’s most prominent example is the central bell tower. This structure sits in the center of Findlay Market and has a dominating presence over the area. This centerpiece is aesthetically pleasing and could lead to conversations regarding the charm of the area.

One of Whyte’s 7 principles about a working plaza mentions that it is important for a space to have a physical and visual relation to the street. Findlay Market is a good example of this because of its easy accessibility to surrounding streets. Findlay Market is surrounded by lots of neighborhoods and Downtown Cincinnati. People have easy access to Findlay Market from these surrounding areas by using the “Connector” (Cincinnati Streetcar). The Connector is free for anyone who needs it.

There are 18 different stations for the Connector throughout Cincinnati. This street car goes through a 3.6 mile loop that connects a lot of major areas within Cincinnati, including Findlay Market. 

Another essential principle of the human scale is that food kiosks and vendors attract people and that compressed tables produce serendipitous encounters. The Findlay market fits this criteria extremely well as there is an abundance of food kiosks within the main building, as well as several stores, restaurants, produce stands and coffee shops immediately surrounding the main building. In addition, there are many local restaurants nearby where people can visit. All of this combined with the previously mentioned movable seating all contribute to the social aspect this principle creates.

The third principle of Whyte’s human scale is light. Findlay Market is a primarily outdoor venue; therefore there is natural light that radiates throughout the plaza each day. The bright colors and similar sizes of the buildings allow the light to reflect off of each other and allow the environment to feel more open and alive. While the sun can make a hot, summer day feel even hotter, the market has tents set up throughout the area to allow for shaded areas and to keep the sun exposure at a minimum on those days.

According to Whyte, trees and plants are an important part of creating spaces comfortable and human scale. Whyte speaks to the psychological benefit that plants, trees, and green space of all sorts have on those living in urban communities, offering a reprieve from the concrete jungle. Findlay Market places ample plants and trees around the exterior of the market and dining areas, as well as surrounding the adjacent parking lot. Findlay Markets makes a priority to provide splashes of nature in a sea of metal and concrete.

I took this at Findlay Market in downtown Cincinnati while I was picking up my roommate. I'm still trying to get the hang of proper long exposure. A car stopped long enough to make an imprint for a few seconds. This one turned out better because I was able to dial back the exposure a bit and keep more highlight and Shadow detail.
