McLaren form new driver development programme led by ex-driver Emanuele Pirro
McLaren have formed a new junior driver programme to be led by former McLaren F1 test driver, Benetton and Scuderia Italia F1 driver and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Emanuele Pirro. The illustrious Formula 1 team's new Driver Development programme includes IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward, McLaren F1 reserve driver Alex Palou – both of whom have tested and practised for the F1 team in the past – and highly-rated American-born youngster Ugo Ugochukwu. 2023 F1 Academy grid: Introducing the drivers and teams for the all-female series’ inaugural season McLaren will develop drivers from karting to professional series with a view to promote them to F1. The team say that their new programme creates the potential for IndyCar or Formula E drivers to test for the F1 team and gain experience, or even contend for a race seat at the F1 team. Italian driver Pirro, who tested for McLaren for three seasons from 1988 – the season in which the Honda-powered MP4/4 took all but one victory at the hands of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost – leads the new McLaren Programme. 2021 IndyCar champion Alex Palou turned laps for McLaren in first practice for the 2022 United States Grand Prix in his F1 weekend debut “I am thrilled by this assignment for several reasons," said Pirro, who thanked Team Principal Andrea Stella and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. "McLaren played a crucial role in my career by giving me the opportunity to earn an F1 drive and to elevate myself to a higher level by working alongside Senna, Prost and [Gerhard] Berger. “Together with my team, my role will assist in creating a state-of-the-art programme, selecting the best possible drivers and providing them with all the tools they need to make the best use of their talent. Furthermore, embed them in the McLaren mission, vision and values and hopefully, have one of them progress to the F1 team. “An important asset for us are the IndyCar and Formula E teams, which will give extra opportunities for a professional career to our McLaren Driver Development members. I love working with young drivers and helping them grow and improve. Every time I did it in the past has been an enriching experience and I look forward to doing it again," said the Italian veteran. READ MORE: Alpine aiming to take the fight to Mercedes with Baku and Miami upgrades Pato O'Ward has taken four wins and 15 podiums in the IndyCar series, and made his F1 free practice debut at Abu Dhabi last year McLaren Racing CEO Brown added: “McLaren has a long history of developing emerging talent into top-level racing drivers and I’m proud that will continue long into the future. We have an experienced team here at McLaren, who will be ably led by Emanuele, that are capable of providing the support and resources required to develop raw young talent into highly competitive professional racing drivers. READ MORE: Wolff says W14 pace is 'only the tip of the iceberg' as Mercedes upgrades imminent “With McLaren’s wide racing portfolio across Formula 1, IndyCar and Formula E, we’re well placed to help develop young talent from the very start of their careers all the way through to full-time racing or test and development roles. We already have an exciting stable of talent, featuring Pato, Alex and Ugo, and I’m excited to continue supporting their development as we start to build the McLaren Driver Development programme.” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Miami seems to have changed something in the way a lot of people are talking about Max, has anyone else noticed? Where before it was mainly about how is super-talented he is, Miami seems to have caused a next step in the conversation. Most notably for me, former f1 drivers and team bosses are talking about him now becoming/being part of the GOAT conversation as if it is all of a sudden normal for people from the F1 world. A few examples I have come across:
I raced against Schumacher, when he used to win everything for Ferrari , and I don't think there has been anyone as strong as Micheal in managing the race. He remains number one to this day. But if we talk about driving talent, Max Verstappen is at the same level. He was devastating in the Miami weekend [...]If we talk about precocity, considering his age and what he has already done, he is even ahead of the greats of the past who preceded him. ".
Giancarlo Fisichella (x)
"I'm sorry that a lot of the debate now is about the show, the unpredictability of the races, overtaking, when instead we should all realize that we are witnessing the exaltation of a champion".
Emanuelle Pirro (x)
"The 2021 battle against Lewis Hamilton made him grow. Now he no longer makes mistakes. He is the strongest driver of this era just like the greats of previous generations were Senna drove with one hand and shifted gears with the other.
Giancarlo Minardi (x)

what has been happening in the world of motorsports?
there is a massive list under the cut, so although i already deleted a lot of it which was not that relevant or important, open on your own risk (key topic of each is in bold)
Guenther Steiner became the official F1 Ambassador of Miami GP this year
Silverstone GP announced their line up for the music show during the race weekend (truthfully i only heard about Olly Murs), Miami GP did the same btw with Ed Sheeran headlining the show (or at least being the only one I know)
Williams repaired the chassis (that can add up to 7 kgs) and managed to fit on Logan's car being only 100 grams heavier. They don’t expect to have a new chassis ready till Miami.
Alpine and RB are other two teams confirmed not to have spare chassis (Bruno Famin said it during the team principals’ press conference and Mekies said they need to see if Daniel is doing bad or if there is something wrong with the car, so they will wait till China for a new chassis and give it to Daniel first).
the problem that Max experienced in Australia was not directly related to BREMS brake system aka the same brand that already started an investigation to Charles' brake issue in Bahrain, our comm the gossiper he is, said that this one is on the Red Bull crew and the way they assembled the right rear brake duct
There have been some rumours coming from New Zealand media that Daniel Ricciardo has been given an ultimatum to start performing in next two races otherwise he could get replaced by Liam Lawson, looks like that was either started by a source close to Liam to put pressure on Daniel or it has been an incorrect translation/misinterpretation of what Helmut Marko said
Marko confirmed that Ayumu Iwasa will be replacing Daniel in FP1 in Japan (Ayumu is a Japanese driver in Red Bull junior academy who drove in F2 last year and changed over to Super Formula this year), Yuki also hinted at this in the post race interview in Australia but then stopped himself, saying he is not allowed to share that yet
But concerning Daniel, while Marko demented the quote about two races left to prove himself, he didn't rule out the possibility of Daniel being replaced mid-season
Honda opened up a new base for their engines in the UK
Toto Wolff told Fox News Australia more details of how Lewis announced his move to Ferrari to him over a coffee and how he warned Lewis to look closely at Mercedes rear wing because that's a perspective he will have starting with the new season
David Sanchez hired for McLaren at the end of last season from Ferrari has been fired (or “leaves the team after mutual agreement from both sides about his misalignment”). They didn't agree on his job position, so he leaves after 3 months. Emanuele Pirro also left McLaren from the role of head of McLaren’s junior academy (there was no apparent reason for this stated, like in David’s case) after one year only.
It seems like Charles will be opening an ice cream parlour LEC in Milan. Press con / grand opening is supposed to be around 10th/11th April, so that’s when we will learn more pieces of information, probably. So far we know it will be with Federico Grom and Guido Martinetti, who founded an ice cream shop chain in Italy.
Max’s chief mechanic Lee Stephenson will be working for Sauber from now on as he ended his journey with Red Bull after Australia.
Toto Wolff spoke again about the replacement of Lewis in Mercedes in 2025 and mentioned he wants to get it sorted around the summer and reminded that Max is on his shortlist. There are rumours about most of Mercedes employees being interested in getting Max in the team and into the ambassador role for them. Also, a side note: Toto originally wasn’t meant to be at this GP but changed plans last minute for unknown reasons.
Liberty Media bought MotoGP commercial rights (for a similar amount as they did with F1: 4,2 billion Euro). The championship is in a similar position where F1 was, and they want to try to put more spotlight on it and bring the fans like they did with F1.
Honda is opening a new engine factory in the UK in preparation for the Aston Martin partnership starting with 2026.
A Japanese billionaire built a private circuit for 180 mil Euro, and it was Herman Tilke’s team who designed it (it is only available for teams of prestigious Magarigawa club).
There was a rumour in the media a few days ago that Aston Martin approached Adrian Newey with a huge financial offer in Jeddah and are just waiting for the answer, however Mike Krack said to media in Suzuka that is not the case and they are happy with their team so they didn’t even need to make any offers in the first place. (Although the rumour has been reported by pretty reliable sources that said it was Lawrence Stroll himself who approached him.)
There was a slight change in the rules concerning tyres for this year and that caused the lack of running in FP2. There was a rule that if Friday sessions are declared as wet, the teams have a selection of 5 intermediate tyre sets and 2 wet ones. However, there used to be a rule of additional intermediate set of tyres being available for Friday if it rained, which would then have to be given back to Pirelli, but that rule isn’t applied this year. This is why teams decided to save tyres for Sunday, in case they are needed (and they will be according to some weather predictions).
Australian GP saw the most fans over the weekend in their history, the official numbers state 452 thousand of fans.
in Australia: Checo had a tear off stuck in his car, Lewis’ issue was reliability concern and the damage to the engine was terminal so he had to take a new one, Fernando was handed an after race 20s penalty for the incident with George, Este was another one with a tear off issue
After Ben Sulayem was cleared of the allegations of trying to mess up with the race results or the accreditation of individual circuits, he came out to say they are despicable moves against him, just trying to discredit him. In support, the US group of FIA club members wrote an open letter than they stand behind him, that he has their support in the decisions and also that they suggest to take legal action against people who were the ones to complain to the ethic committee.
Seb has been vocal over the last days to promote a new drink Perple (but he spoke about a lot of current f1 topics). Speaking of potential comeback, Porsche apparently postponed the announcement of their Le Mans lineup (was meant to be on 28th March) and he named the car he tested with, so there is a high possibility of him driving. He covered 118 laps, and I didn’t find any times comparison but there is a report that they were impressive.
FIA Prize Giving for 2024 will be held in Kigali in Rwanda on 13th December this season – first time ever for this country.
Pierre started a new line of his own merch with his own face on it from karting days and there has been quite some talk about that move copying Lewis’ significant merch (I like to shit on Pierre but personal opinion: this is really NOT that deep and Lewis doesn’t actually have a trademark for this kind of merch). Yuki is releasing new line too and there is a lot of blue color which I appreciate. Guyanu made a partnership line with Lululemon. Lewis was a face of latest issue of GQ and ate that photoshoot.
Valtteri mentioned he is in talks with Audi for a contract beyond this season and more importantly he spoke about the pit stop issues and warned fans they will struggle with this issue for a while still, because they need both time and funds to fix it so expect multiple other races like this.
BBC spoke to close victim of Horner case. She can't speak about it during the investigation, is angry and scared and feels silenced. Multiple sources approached her to see if she would like to sell her story and make money on it, but she refused because she doesn’t want fame, just justice. She will also go to the employment tribunal.
Kimi Antonelli will be testing W12 on 16th April (and later test W13 to get a feeling of the "good" car first).
Daily Mail reports Mercedes will be partnering with Adidas (instead of Puma and Tommy Hilfiger) to design their merch and race wear.
F1 now has a multiyear partnership with Playseat to provide official racing simulators
Charles made a new road safety campaign
It’s Oscar’s birthday today!
The Las Vegas GP report showed its economic influence etc. but also weak spots like infrastructure
Logan Sargeant’s docu named Racing the Odds came out on ESPN
Teams are being restricted from how much behind-the-scenes content they can show and it’s all related to Liberty Media and Drive to Survive, because Netflix wants a monopole over the exclusive content.
I saw a lot of talk after Australia about team orders with the main point about McLaren’s ones that they ordered Lando to be let in front, because he was on fresher tyres and could catch up with Charles. McLaren’s TP Andrea Stella came out and said it is not the case and they wanted to avoid the drivers crashing into each other and losing the valuable double points and podium
Lando Norris was on Chicken Shop Date. I don’t understand the significance of it but a lot of news sites I like to check reported it, so I figured out it may be a big deal in the world of people who have social media outside of Tumblr?
We have a few returning faces: Masi was in the Australian GP paddock and Binotto is rumored to visit the paddock for Japanese GP and Felipe Massa was at an FE race while suing F1 which seems a bit strange.

La 24 ore di Le Mans 2023
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Happy Birthday Scottish Race Car driver Dario Franchitti.
Franchitti was born and raised in Bathgate, West Lothian, he attended Stewart’s Melville in Edinburgh
Dario started off racing carts - and at 11 years old, he won the Scottish Junior Championship. He followed that up with a British Junior Championship in 1985 and 1986. In 1988 won the Scottish Senior Title. From there, he moved on to formula car racing in 1992, where he joined Paul Stewart Racing. That year he was named the McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year. After winning the championship in 1993, Dario moved up and won the British Formula Three Championship in 1994. Dario continued to race in Europe until 1996, where he was sponsored by AMG Racing and drove a Mercedes.
In 1996, Dario progressed to Champ Car racing in the US. After starting off with Hogan Racing, he switched to Team KOOL Green in 1998. In two seasons with Team KOOL Green, he won six races and seven poles. A crash during a practice run limited Dario’s progress for the next two years, only winning one race in 2001. Dario joined the Andretti Green team in the IndyCar Series in 2003. While his first few years were hindered by injury, he still was able to capture a couple of victories in 2004. In May 2007, Dario’s career reached an all-time high as he took home the Indianapolis 500! He also won his first career championship title in a final-race title decider with Scott Dixon. At the end of the season, Franchitti was named as BBC Scotland’s Sports Personality of the Year. First Look: The Lamborghini Essenza SCV12
Automobili Lamborghini presents the Essenza SCV12, the track-only hypercar in a limited edition of 40 units, developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corse and designed by Lamborghini Centro Stile. The direct descendant of cars such as the Miura Jota and Diablo GTR, the Essenza SCV12 is fitted with the most powerful V12 naturally aspirated engine ever developed by Lamborghini, combined with aerodynamics inspired by racing prototypes and new technical solutions designed for the ultimate driving experience.
Stefano Domenicali, CEO and Chairman of Automobili Lamborghini, commented: “Essenza SCV12 represents the purest track driving experience that our brand can offer, an engineering feat that highlights the inextricable link between our cars and the asphalt of the track. Lamborghini is a brand constantly looking to the future and searching for new challenges, but we never forget our roots and who we are: Essenza SCV12 is the perfect combination of our unconventional spirit as a super sports car manufacturer and our true passion for motorsport.”
Born for the track
The Essenza SCV12 was created for exclusive track use, with engineering solutions derived from racing. The V12 engine is able to deliver over 830 hp, with a significant power uplift from the RAM effect at high speeds. The exhaust pipes were designed by Capristo to reduce the back pressure, improving performance and emphasizing the unique sound of the engine. The power is handled by a new X-trac sequential six-speed gearbox as a structural element within the chassis, combined with rear-wheel drive to ensure compactness, structural continuity, and greater torsional stiffness.
The Essenza SCV12 features an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 1.66 hp/kg thanks to the new-generation carbon fiber monocoque chassis without internal roll cage. The Essenza SCV12 is also the first GT car developed to respect FIA prototype safety rules.
To ensure maximum agility and stability on even the most demanding tracks, kinematic solutions inspired by racing prototypes have been adopted, such as the push-rod rear suspension installed directly on the gearbox. The panorama is completed by specific slick Pirelli tires mounted on magnesium rims (19” front, 20” rear), which frame the brake discs and calipers developed by Brembo Motorsport.
Aerodynamics
The aerodynamics benefit from Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s GT racing experience to ensure a level of efficiency and higher downforce levels than a GT3 car, with a value of 1,200 kg at 250 km/h.
The front hood has a double air intake with a central rib, typical of the Huracán racing cars, which separates the hot airflow coming from the radiator and conveys the cold air to the airscoop located on the roof. The front features a splitter and two lateral elements; on the sides, the flows for engine and gearbox cooling have been optimized through the use of vertical fins situated on the side sills. The aerodynamic package is completed by the large adjustable double-profile rear wing.
Design
The design of the Essenza SCV12 is the result of the creative work by Lamborghini Centro Stile, which has designed all racing cars produced by Lamborghini since Squadra Corse was established. The essential nature of the car is underscored by the structure of the bodywork, formed by only three elements to enable quick replacement when necessary during pit stops. The exclusive Verde Silvans, Grigio Linx, Nero Aldebaran Gloss and Arancio California launch livery displays the trademark logos of long-standing Lamborghini Squadra Corse partners, Pertamina, Pirelli and Roger Dubuis.
The sleek yet taut and dynamic lines combine the appeal of 1970s prototypes and elements typical of Lamborghini’s DNA, like the hexagonal geometry that characterizes the front headlights, and the roof airscoop and air vents that frame the steering wheel. There is also the unmistakable “Y”, the stylistic feature repeated on the livery and in the cockpit, where each element represents the best compromise between lightweight, functionality and design. In fact, the instrument panel and dashboard are supported by an asymmetrical carbon “Y”, a load-bearing and stylistic element that frames the cockpit, designed to put the driver at the center of an absolute driving experience.
The design of the multi-function steering wheel with display was inspired by F1 single-seater steering wheels to offer the best ergonomics and a perfect feel, without the driver needing remove their hands from the rim with its futuristic yet rational design. The specific FIA homologated OMP seat with carbon shell embraces the driver to ensure comfort, safety and stability.
Driving experience
Essenza SCV12 customers will become part of an exclusive club that will give them access to special programs to drive their hypercar on the most prestigious circuits in the world. The program includes storage service in a new hangar built in Sant’Agata Bolognese for the Essenza SCV12 club. Each car will have a personalized garage and dedicated services, including webcams to allow customers to monitor their cars 24 hours a day using an app. The facility also houses the “Lamborghini Squadra Corse Drivers Lab” by Tecnobody to offer athletic training programs similar to those followed by the official Lamborghini racing drivers.
The track calendar will start in 2021 with “arrive and drive” events held at numerous FIA Grade 1 homologated circuits. Assistance will be provided by the Squadra Corse technical staff with the support of Emanuele Pirro, five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and an excellent tutor for the customer-drivers; and Marco Mapelli, Lamborghini Squadra Corse Factory Driver.
