My partner did finances, and even though this time of year is usually really expensive (Christmas, her birthday, my birthday, Valentine's Day, various one-time end-of-year/beginning-of-year fees), with the amount of money that I'm now earning, we still managed a four-figure surplus. So, I went online and bought the very last Emerson String Quartet CD that I didn't already own, as a treat!

Emerson String Quartet plays George Walker's "Lyric for Strings"

George Walker (June 27, 1922 – August 23, 2018) was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, in 1996.

I first heard this piece when the Emerson String Quartet performed it on the Tiny Desk concert celebrating their retirement after almost 50 (!) years of playing together.

Tiny desk concerts are always thrilling for me to watch. The small space, the way the sound works through the room, and the intimacy in which it provides. This one with the Emerson String Quartet is remarkable.

Since I'm still without any work from the two firms that I'm a contractor for, I'm listening to one of the albums that I got for Christmas last year, this two-CD set featuring the Emerson String Quartet, who retired a couple years ago, and my favorite living pianist, Evgeny Kissin, performing piano quartet and quintet pieces by Mozart, Fauré, and Dvorak (with a little bit of Shostakovich, as a treat). The recordings are from a concert at Carnegie Hall back in 2018, and I gotta hand it to the Deutsche Grammophon engineering team--I'm not hearing any coughing or other intrusive crowd noise. Just nice musical goodness by these world-class musicians.
