Historical cdrama recommendations
Though absolutely no one asked for this, here are a list of some of my personal favorite historical cdramas. These dramas may not be to everyone’s liking as I am not the greatest fan of wuxia (no offense; I am just kind of slow on picking up details). The dramas that make up this list are mostly female-centric but not all of them revolve around harem politics. Most of the dramas take place during the Qing dynasty so I apologize if you aren’t a huge fan of Manchu hairstyles. They aren’t ranked in no particular order but these are my favorite amongst tons of period dramas.
So here goes:
1. Ruyi’s Royal Love In The Palace: I absolutely adore this drama; not because this was my first cdrama, but because the story and the cast are simply magnificent. This show introduced me to the Qing dynasty and motivated my fascination about this time period. It revolves around Ula-Nara Qingying (later Ruyi), a lady of Manchu nobility, who eventually becomes one of the most infamous Qing dynasty Empresses. It’s a tale of a woman whose only desire was to stay true to her love and how life in the palace makes that utterly impossible. You’ll grow to admire the acting skills of Zhou Xun and just the writing of this show. Warning: Physical abuse and bloody scenes are present
2. Story of Minglan: Though this show revolves around fictional figures, it is set amongst historical events and characters. I promise you that despite the slow beginning and the lack of romance till ep 40~ish, it is totally worth it. The story is about Sheng Minglan, an unfavored illegitimate daughter during the Song Dynasty, who learns to hide her talent and skills while choosing to act quiet and timid. The story however doesn’t glorify our protagonist and doesn’t only revolve around her but takes time to make keen observations of society and human behaviour during this time period, which you will grow to enjoy.
3. Story of Yanxi Palace: This is one of those dramas you could watch a million times but there are some scenes that crack you up no matter what. The story is the rise of one of two Han consorts to be posthumously conferred as Empresses during the Qing dynasty; Empress Xiaoyichun named Wei Yingluo. Starting off as an Embroidery maid, she braves major battles in the inner court to find true love and avenge her sister who died unfairly. There are some plot holes but you could make do with them after you fall in love with each character. If you’re a Charmaine Sheh fan, do not miss this show.
4. Empress of the Ming: This isn’t your typical harem drama; it is the rise of a former rebel to the position of one of the most influential Empress Dowagers during the Ming Dynasty. It is a lot more political but the OTP is amazing and you’ll grow to fall in love with out protagonist Sun Ruowei, who tells the Emperor (her husband) that she enjoyed being a rebel lot more than being an Empress (female lead goals). If you’re looking for romance this may not really satisfy you and though there is a decent amount of creative liberty taken here, it is a decent watch.
5. Legend of Xiaozhuang: This is an older drama so it will be harder to find episodes for this which is why I’ll leave the link underneath this paragraph. It is the story of a Mongolian princess, Dayu’er, who rises to be one of the most respected Empress Dowagers both in Qing and Chinese history. There is an epic love triangle and you’ll stay hooked purely due to our protagonist. It is only about 35 episodes so you won’t get bored or get the feeling that it is too slow. You also get to learn a lot about the early Qing dynasty which isn’t that well known.
http://xiaozhuangepic.blogspot.com/
6. Empresses In The Palace: It’s so hard to describe this show in a few words which says a lot. The story is about Zhen Huan and her tribulations in the imperial harem during the Qing dynasty. You will meet so many characters in this show that you’ll grow to love and sympathize with in this drama; not the most historically accurate so maybe not believe it too much. Around 30 episodes are subbed on youtube however subs for the rest on other websites isn’t that great. I wouldn’t recommend the condensed version (because I’ve seen both).
7. Scarlet Heart: The pioneer of time travel in historical cdramas which revolves around a fictional character Zhang Xiao, who travels back to the Qing Dynasty and becomes Maertai Ruoxi the daughter of a general, who becomes involved in the succession battles between princes during the Kangxi Era. Maertai Ruoxi will begin to grow on you for she is a loyal friend and an amazing woman. The romance is to die for and our lead couple are married in real life (yay!)
Other dramas to check out: Nirvana in fire, Succession War, Yanxi Palace Princess Adventures, Legend of Haolan, Goodbye my princess, Legend of Miyue
The only drama I do not recommend: Serenade of Peaceful Joy
I mean if you’re fond of misogyny and women being raped by their husbands glorified by all means go ahead and watch Serenade of Peaceful Joy.

Initial thoughts after the end of Ming Dynasty (2019 cdrama)
Tumblr media
First off, super credits to William Chang, the costume designer, who made Ming dynasty costuming look fantastic.
The cast did very well. There is an effort to portray the imperial family (in Ming, the Zhu family) as more human, and not in the usual ways of “they had kids and had parental emotion” or love and hate or typical “respect parents” kind. There is a lot of yelling fights, snide remarks, back smack talking, and general disrespect.
There is a scene where the Yongle emperor’s three sons are departing their father’s palace. Halfway through the yard (and it is an enormous yard), Zhu Gaoxi (2nd son) drops his act and starts bickering with Zhu Gaosui (3rd son). Their older brother, Zhu Gaochi, shushes Gaoxi and tells him their father can still see them. Gaoxi scoffs, but Gaochi says their dad got some badass new telescope so he can definitely spy on them from inside. So the three brothers throw their arms around each others’ shoulders and pretend to be cool buddies until they get out the gate.
Basically, the sense that you want to yell at your siblings, but you don’t want your parents to know you’re fighting. That sort of layered instance occurs a lot in the series, exaggerated to extremes because this family is an Imperial one, and that means even minor fights between family members is possibly life-threatening or a national problem.
And that sort of portrayal is what makes the actors and cast feel so strong, because all the chemistry of a messed up family is there.
The story overall, however, is a tragedy, even though the early parts are comedic, full of dark humor. The family can be close but the individual members have ambitions and desires that destroy each other. It is adapted from a novel, The Chronicle of Six Eras, by Lianjing Zhuyi, and those six eras speak of how in just 40-something years there were 'six’ emperors.
Although, from the name and synopsis of the original novel, the story was much more centered on the female protagonist Sun Ruowei. The production probably intended for the drama to be more in the vein of the “Big Female Protagonist” series like Empress of China and Legend of Miyue. I think the final product as it is now, as an ensemble show, is more unique.
If there is something I feel plagues the drama and makes it less that what it could have been, it’s that the pacing is awkward and poor. I think there are some long scenes that could have used brevity; the spacing of the story suffers also from the usual “the first half is 10 years and the second half is 40″. The first ‘era’ as told in the story is that of the twilight years of Yongle’s reign, but it took him essentially half of the episode count (30-something out of 65 episodes) to die. Historically, the Hongxi Emperor that followed reigned for only 8 months, but his son the Xuande Emperor reigned for 10 years, but they got gone in just about 10 episodes, where almost everything in the first half was closed up and neatly shelved. Yet even with new cast added for the last 25 episodes, their development is somewhat dragged out.
The show has its problems, but I think it’s worth watching.

I sincerely wish historical drama producers would stop hiring Zhang Shuping/William Chang as costume designer, because the leads’ weird hairdos and costumes usually stick out like a sore-thumb (The Rise of Phoenixes is probably the best of the lot).
