hiii! firstly, i just wanna say i live for your work and think that you are a reincarnation of a ancient greek poet(think like sappho of lesbos)! i am a new user to tumblr, but ive always been an avid writer and was wondering how you got your start on regularly writing and posting on tumblr without getting embarrassed or discouraged. i will be waiting on the edge of my seat for a response.
(ps- thank you for being you🩵)
😳
Okay, i am ACCEPTING that very big and beautiful compliment of you, likening me, to some greek poet who may or may not have existed at some point in time. I'm definitely no sappho or lesbos! But in the slightest chance that I was at least once, some greek poet, then that's a win baby!!! Thank you 💌!
I got my start on writing in school, because I was on the Humanities and Social Sciences track ~ and I had 2.5 hours of creative writing classes every other day plus a very invested professor who wanted us to love writing (and whom I wanted to impress).
On regularly writing... OOF. I... Don't :( You found me on a writing high, but before March this year, this account was left to marinate for 6-7 months (maybe more), with the occasional reblog. This account was dead silent before then. I write when I can and I write when I want to, badly enough.
What helps me write as regularly as I can manage is finding inspiration from quotes, short reels, other people's writing, and... 💃 SPITE 💃. Oohhhhhh. Yeah, I'm a spiteful writer. I have something to say that's usually in response to what I see within the fandom (which is why this blog tends to get whiny). I say find one emotion you can really milk. Draw on that and let a few ideas come to you.
On getting discouraged, I... Hehe. A good part of the discouragement is dealt with by spite 🥹 (I'M SORRY). This blog was made out of frustration and I think it shows 😭😭😭. I write to deal with my frustration and I write so I don't end up fighting with people on the internet, like a random dude who gets into fights at rundown parking lots at 3am. While I do, also, want to bond with people over writing and my love for Regulus, I didn't come here wanting people to like what I write or expect people to admire my writing. I WAS ANGRY 😭😭😭😭. I wanted to litter the Regulus Black tags and the Black Brothers tag with as many "contrary" pieces and meta because I was so tired of the shit I was seeing!
I still am 😠. My attitude towards writing is that if I have to see other people's bs then they're dealing with my shit too ❣️. People directly hating on Regulus? Deliberately misunderstanding his character? HAHA, well it's time to get typing 💅. People wanting to shit on Sirius and Reg's brotherhood? Well, here's twenty different ways, they will literally die for each other ✨ xoxo 💋
I guess sometimes the numbers do sway me, and on the occasion that it does happen, I'm grateful that I don't write things I don't genuinely like. I mean yeah, it's kinda sad (like how little love my Black Sisters piece got when I know for sure, that if it had been between Sirius and Reg it would've gotten the usual number of notes similar pieces tend to get) but if you loved what you've written before you hit the post button, rereading the pieces that don't do well will always hit you with that warm feeling, of being proud of what you've made :)
(it also helps that I'm such a small account)
Also FIND FRIENDS TO BRAINROT WITH.
The common people might not enjoy such cultured writing but folks with similar disease, will. And you'll find, that most of the time, that's all you need. (Source: ME, BITCH.)
On embarrassment, well, you gotta own your platform. This is YOUR HOUSE. Would you get embarrassed walking naked in your own home? No 💖. There will always be people as messed up as you are or WORSE. So be the freaky freak that you are. Take no shit. It's your blog!!!! No matter how many people follow you, it's still!!! Your blog!!!
Just be reasonable about the tags you use. Don't put hate on character tags, use #anti [character name] instead. Don't cross tag!
Find something (an emotion, a really good idea you want to bring to life, friends you want to write for) that can eclipse your need to hold back. Most people won't care :)
I hope you find what makes your writer brain do the happy dance :)

Day 467, 468, 469 and 470
Firstly sorry for the big blog, but I really wanted this weekend to be a relaxing one! So here we go!
Thursday 13th May 2021
Firstly, happiest of birthdays to my lovely Cathy. So blessed to have you in my life, you are constantly there for me, no matter where we are and I am so thankful for your friendship. Missing you millions.
Today it was a public holiday in Belgium, Joelle and Paul headed off to Stavelot for the weekend and Benoit and I had the house to ourselves for the next four days. Although unfortunately for me, Benoit is working Friday- Saturday. But today was magical and we really made the most of it. Since we have gotten into the rhythm of getting up early, we did that. We spent the morning being active. All Benoits idea, which was neat because usually I have to force him to work out with me! So we got up early and went for a 10km run, we were both feeling really good and the run was lovely. Spring time really is a wonderful time of year, and with the sun out, it was a good way to start the morning. When we got back, Benoit was keen to keep up the motivation so we did a body combat and our climbing hangs before washing up. After lunch, we walked down to the Elfique brewery, it is only a few kms from our house and since the weather was nice, we decided that it would be nice to walk there. We broke our alcohol free month for the occasion too! They have produced a summer IPA so we decided to make the most of it, support the locals and try it! It was fun to have a little date afternoon, although the walk back up the hill to our house wasn’t the easiest! Once we got home, we relaxed for a bit before starting on dinner – a Jamie oliver recipe, British meatballs and sweet potato mash. They were pretty damn good! Since we were tired and hungry, we ate dinner rather early. Since we had the time, we made a sticky date pudding for dessert. It was a treat! (and even better, now we have dessert for the rest of the weekend too!)
Friday 14th May
Benoit had work this morning and I needed to head to the supermarket to pick up some supplies for the pizzas tonight, I decided to ask Benoit to drop me off and I would walk home, that way I only had to walk one way. Benoit dropped me off just before the supermarket opened and I found myself waiting in line for it to open will all the oldies. Made me laugh a bit! Once I had done my shopping and walked back home, I decided to make the most of the sunshine, put the hammock out and read for a few hours. Honestly, it was bliss, felt like I was back in the days of when I wasn’t working here, moved between little tasks and relaxing, it was a good feeling! Oh the good old days! When the sun went behind the clouds and the rain came back, I decided to try my luck at doing my tax return, it was a bit complicated so I sent an SOS off to mum, and made lunch. After a break, I decided, although my legs were sore from yesterdays crazy amount of sport, I would go for a short run to warm up all the muscles before stretching, it was a good way to end the afternoon. Then onto bread making and pizza prep, by the time Benoit got home from work, it was 6.30, the bread had been baked and the pizzas were ready to be topped and thrown in the oven. Tonight they were delicious, we made a bacon and chevre one and wow, delicious! Then of course, topped up our full tummys with dessert! So far this weekend has been a delicious one.
Saturday 15th May
Once again, Benoit got up early for work, but today even earlier as he had to go get his second shot before work. Seeing as he was up, I decided to get up too and siese the day. I started messaging Mum and Jamie and ended up having a pretty good catch up with them. It was neat to be able to talk for the morning. Just as Mum and Dad were getting ready for dinner, we managed to get Grantie on the phone, so afterwards Grant and I had a good catch up. It has been way to long, and although my English really wasn’t up to deep discussions with Grant, I did my best and it was just like the good old days! Since I have been doing a lot of reading and listening to podcasts on quite a few things recently I was much better prepared for the usual attack on the braincells! Since I had been sitting still most of the morning, I got active and did a workout before lunch. Then as inspired by dad, I got the watercolours out and tried to get back into my creative groove. It has been a while, I decided to not set myself any hard ideas, just put the brush to paper and see where it goes. It was nice to spend the afternoon being creative – and all the while listening to podcasts of course. This time one on ‘the end of the world’, guess who told me about it. When Benoit got home, I was knowledged out and he was feeling a bit tired after his big day. We made wegdes, heated up the rest of the meatballs from Thursday and had a nice easy dinner before watching Sense and Sensibility (my love of Pride and Prejudice made me want to watch it). It was a nice little relaxing evening. And for all those worried, Benoit has had no side affects to the vaccine, so lucky him!
Sunday 16th May
A lazy Sunday for Benoit and I! We spent the morning researching investment opportunities which was rather informative. As you all know benoit and I a really keen on our TinyHouse, and although I have finished drawing it, we are still thinking about it and trying to make that a reality as quickly as possible, hence thinking about investments. So a bit morning of reading up on everything. The weather was once again rather average, the sunshine wants to shine through but unfortunately, as will the last three days, the rain clouds are never far away. Never the less, after a good few hours behind our screens, we decided to go out for a walk anyway. Benoit sold it as a little walk before lunch, but it turned out being a 2.5 hour walk, but a nice one. The weather was average, but we had our raincoats and it was good to get outside for a bit! Although at the end of our two hour walk, we did get a bit wet and were keen to get home! Then a late lunch, a bit of Italian for me. At 5pm we had a smoothie for our last meal and then started our fast! Initially everyone was keen to do the fast with us, but schedules got busy and it was just Benoit and I left, we decided to do it anyway. So much free time in the evenings when you dont eat haha! We had a much needed early night, so not ready for work tomorrow!
Love Kate xxxxx
One: Sunshine when I saw it, and having time to relax Two: Trying new recipes. When we have the time, Jamie Olivers comfort food is our new go to book (although they take longer) they are so good! Three: Time with Benoit, bliss

Interviewing Gnarstalgia Creator and Skateboarder, Brian Denison.
Brian and I both grew up in the Dallas area and around similar crowds/parks, however we’ve only skated together a handful of times. Despite this, we’ve always kept in touch. About 6 months ago, we got on a call together after speaking online since he has since moved to Colorado, (I’m envious, btw) and we talked about skateboarding and current projects. We quickly realized that our interests in creating something out of all our past skate stories, old footage, and current skills were very much aligned.
Among other projects and ideas, Brian went on to tell me about his new website Gnarstalgia which came with the tagline, “20 years. 80 tapes. 160 hours of stoke.” This, of course, references the 160 hours of skateboarding he has transferred from VHS-C, Hi-8, and Digi-8 tapes into organized and edited videos. After checking it out, I was amazed how much work he put into his edits and the website as a whole. I became super excited about the possibilities of this, (until now) lost footage. We decided to collaborate on a bunch of future skateboarding-inspired projects including my Lost Skate Spots series, some upcoming documentaries & videos, as well as this interview which will focus on his website and Brian himself. Enjoy.
First things first, tell me a little about how you got into skateboarding?
"Haha, yeah, I started skating in early 1999 after playing the snowboarding game Cool Boarders 3 on the first Playstation. I was pretty good at it and was sure I would be good in real life too if I could only get the chance to ride one, but I lived in Corpus Christi, TX, which is about as far from snow as you can get. So my mom told me if I learned to skateboard first, she’d take me snowboarding. I busted out an old Nash I had gotten when I was six and literally rode it till the wheels fell off. I remember one, along with its individual ball bearings rolling down the driveway, but from there, I was hooked. Soon after I started, we moved up to Dallas and I would go ride out in front of my house and at the local school. By then, THPS had just come out and the popularity was exploding. We had a whole grip of kids, like 15-20 that would skate with us. Around that same time I started going to Eisenbergs, and that’s really where I started to meet all the homies. I was there almost every day, and skating solidified into pretty much the only thing I cared about."  -- BD
What's your involvement/history with Dallas Skate Crew?
"I knew a lot of the dudes from skating at Eisenbergs. Mostly Juan, Anthony, Murph, and folks like that. But I really spent most of my time hanging out with Sturgeon, Severs, Kyle, James, Shawn, and Jojo. There were a bunch of smaller, random skate crews back then, and they all had different names. Even though I lived in Plano (ugh, I know), I spent most of my time in Garland and Rowlett. I remember Corey Rosales was all about “RSC” - Rowlett Skate Crew. So a lot of us repped that for a while. But as I got older, I was spending more time with the DSC dudes, especially Darby and David Pool. By then it seemed like a lot of the crews were all homies anyway, and DSC was definitely the main one. I had gotten into graffiti and learned how to draw DSC in like a thousand different ways on all my school notebooks. Like a nerdy little kid, I’m pretty sure I asked Anthony or Juan or somebody if it was cool if I rep DSC too, and they were like “Yeah man of course!” So I was stoked, haha. Pretty funny in retrospect, but from my perspective we were all just one big ass group of friends and it was fun to have something like that that held the crew together. I remember Anthony had written a small bit about the history of DSC on this super old website too. Probably super long defunct now. But it was about how the whole thing got started when they were young too. OG shit. It’s rad to be a part of it all, and much respect to all the homies."  -- BD
What was one of your favorite skating memories from filming?
"Dude, I’ve got so many! But the best one probably has to do with when Kyle Estes ollied the old 16 stair at Richardson High School. I think it’s a 20 now, but in the same spot. I remember Kyle was only 12 at the time, so the set was literally 4 more stairs than he was old. Insane! He was obsessed with Baker back then, and we all were like oh shit! This is definitely gonna get you on the team! He repped Baker hard, and had also just done a PERFECT backside flip down the Garland 9, so dude was on fire. I think it was Kyle, Sturgeon, Shawn, Jojo and me there that day. After like 10 slams, he ended up getting the rollaway (check out the footage below!). But a few months after that, another local, Tyler Maguffee, told me he wanted to fs board it. Tyler, Jojo and me went to go check it out and ended up bondo-ing the crack in front of the rail so he could hit it. But as luck would have it, we got caught. We tried to play it off, like we were students there who had tripped and fallen on the stairs and wanted to fix the crack. Security did NOT fall for it though, haha. The next time we went back, they had skate-stopped it. SHIT! Sad to say it, but don’t think it ever got skated again. Fast forward a decade or so, and I’m working on Gnarstalgia, but one of the only tapes I can’t find is the one with Kyle’s 16 stair ollie. So bummed. Then one day while I was hanging out with David Pool, I told him about the project I was working on, and how I wish I had that tape. By some magic of the universe he looked me dead in my eye and goes “Bro… I know where it is.” He then walked over to a safe, cracked it open, and inside was not just the “Kyle 16 Stair Ollie” tape, but also several of his own that he had filmed. What a lucky break! We took the photo below out of sheer disbelief. So huge shoutout to David for keeping that thing safe all these years."  -- BD
What skateboarders, pro or otherwise, inspire you most?
"My favorite skater right now is probably Robert Neal. Dude has the sickest style, and always looks like he’s having the best time on and off his board. But in general, I’m just glad to still get to skate as much as I do. And to still have plenty of other people to skate with who love it just as much as me. It’s those who never lost the love for it who I find most inspiring. "  -- BD
Tell me about your recently released project Gnarstalgia.com and how it came to be.
"So I spent a ton of time filming in the early 2000s. I would capture my footage each week, and edit all kinds of montages and sponsor-me tapes for the homies. I was on pace to release a video around ‘03 or ‘04. But this was during the time peer-to-peer sharing sites like Limewire and Kazaa were super popular. So in addition to logging multiple gigs of footage onto my poor little 56k computer, I was also downloading tons of other shit that was riddling my computer with viruses. And of course, I was not smart enough to back up my work on an external hard drive. The computer crashed and I lost practically all of it. The only things that were salvaged were the original tapes and any edits I had transferred over to them. I then spent the next year re-uploading everything and backing it up on external hard drives, completely determined to still release the video. But of course, I didn’t learn my lesson about Limewire and Kazaa, and kept downloading shit. Before long, the computer AND the external hard drives were also destroyed by viruses and I lost it all again. That pretty much killed any fire I had left in me, and I just gave up on filming and editing for a long, long time. It wouldn’t be till college that I started to dabble again. But in all the years since I lost the edits, I knew I wanted to make a video using the old shoeboxes full of VHS-C, Hi-8, and Digi-8 tapes I had sitting in the closet. I knew it would be a years-long endeavor, so I kept putting it off. Around 2018 though, I realized I was coming up on 20 years of skating, and releasing a video with all that long-lost footage seemed the perfect way to celebrate. By then, I had lost touch with a lot of the main people in the video. I’m sure they never expected to see that footage again. Out of nowhere, the name Gnarstalgia just popped in my head and the thought of surprising everyone with it got me super amped to get started. But it took a full year to make it through all 80 tapes, capturing each fun clip and trick. From there, I had to start editing. I barely knew how to use Premiere, so I spent tons of time watching tutorials on YouTube to learn how to use overlays, mattes, color correction, logo animations, and troubleshoot countless problems that popped up. I really enjoyed it too. I was having a blast! But after the pandemic began, I decided to double down. This was the perfect time to dive in and really finish the whole thing. Finally, 2.5 years after I started the project, the whole thing was done. Two trailers, a 20-year recap, Eisenbergs Edit, Street Edit, Park Edit and Demo Edit. Plus a website featuring tons of long-lost montages and video parts from some of Dallas’ most well-known skaters. And all starting with some of their earliest footage. I think the name Gnarstalgia really does capture it. It truly is 20 years. 80 tapes. 160 hours of stoke."  -- BD
Where can people connect with you online and check out your stuff? [LINKS BELOW]
"You can find all 55+ videos on gnarstalgia.com, as well as the Gnarstalgia YouTube. Follow @gnarstalgia_video on Instagram for highlights, unused clips, and tons of other old footage submitted from all your favorite Dallas skaters and filmers. P.S. Huge shoutout to Jon Snyder (@Mini_Ramp), Mo Duncan Jr (@ModuncanJr), David Pool (@Timothy_Leary), Darby (@Darby_McVay), and everyone else for contributing old Dallas footage as well. And to Eric Kuhns for all the killer stuff he’s been putting out the last few years as well. You guys have made the project even more rewarding and enjoyable than I ever could have expected. Cheers! And keep skating 🤙 "  -- BD
Final Thoughts:
I’d like to thank Brian for taking the time to do this interview and I can’t recommend his website enough. Dallas has produced so many shredders and Gnarstalgia.com shows off so much of what has made the skateboarding scene here so amazing. I’d also like to add that this was one of my favorite interviews I’ve ever done and I can’t wait to create and collab more with Brian.
Additionally, check out the latest Lost Skate Spots episode where I discuss the now shutdown, Freestyle Skatepark. We hear Brian tell us a story from back in the day as well as share some footage for an edit he filmed that includes Bam Margera, Ed Templeton, Billy Marks, tons of locals, and more.

Day 3 (so far, on time)
Wellll it’s officially Thursday now... so. uhh.. I guess if you take Hawaii’s time? It’d still be Wednesday. Whatever. After the stint last night with reading and what not, I was pretty productive, surprisingly. After I had a leisurely breakfast, involving basically all carbs, I decided to screw around in my room for a little bit. It was really bright and nice out, but I didn’t feel like going outside just then, so I opened up my window in my room, removed the tape from the water bottle I painted, and continued painting sea creatures on the wall opposite from the window and adjacent to the long edge of my bed. I managed to almost complete the nautilus, and I also eyed the flying fish sketch pensively, because I have no clue how to theme it with the emojis “peach, banana, ok hand sign,” and keep it pure as well. I guess there’s always going down the gutter minded path, since my entire room will be knocked down during the future renovation of my/our house, but again, it. Would. Be. In. My. Room.
After getting bored of that, I decided to clean the two bathrooms in our house again, since my brother does shit in terms of chores. I also did the dishes again, and proceeded to generate more dishes by blending a smoothie. Boredom eating is just killing me during this coronacation, haha. I run every other day, so maybe? It’ll be ok? Heh. After lunch, which was basically around 2:30, which was only 2 hours after breakfast, and 3.5 hours after I got up, I also vacuumed the entire house, which someone usually has to drag me into doing. I think it was so that I didn’t feel entirely useless for constantly creating art and not doing things academic. RIP ECs for college hahahahhah (*silent screaming underneath*). When that was finished, I retreated to my room again, and decided to continue painting. The one thing that triggers me oh-so-much in traditional art, especially with painting mediums, is having to remix colors-- and they don’t turn out right. At all. It’s difficult and makes the piece look mismatched, but then again, I don’t want to mix an entire batch of one color, and then let it dry out later. That’d be really wasteful, and right now, I’m low on black, white, and blue acrylics, and no craft stores are open, since they aren’t “essential.” When my dad came back from work, I decided to yeet out of the house because I didn’t want to be told to go weed the yard in order to absorb more vitamin D. I grabbed my bike, and attempted to head the opposite direction my brother had went on his bike. He headed east-ish, so I headed south-west. Sorta. Just into down town Los Gatos, and into the trails down that way. There were quite a lot of people out and about on the trails, so a lot of it was some half-assed social distancing, but whatever. There was a man running in front of me, and I was on bike, so I was impressed, and even more so because the guy was on the older end of the spectrum. It also made me feel super inadequate, but hey, cross country season’s around the bend, so that’ll give me an ego boost later hah. I got home and binged more starch and stuff, so yay. I went back to my room to draw, but couldn’t focus, so I spent some time browsing Instagram (read: 2.5 hours), until dinner was ready. I probably should have helped out, but I felt super apathetic, especially after having done my share of chores, plus some more, for the day. After dinner, I did the dishes again, and showered. From washing the rice this morning, my mom handed me some rice water and told me to wash my face. This part is a little suss to me, because that water ain’t clean. It’s not gonna whiten my face, just ‘cuz rice is white. Yeah. And, I just darken easily. There’s nothing to be done about it. Sunblock helps, but ehhhhh. After all this went down, I spent more time painting and detailing the nautilus.
The lighting is awful and yellow, because I only have a smol lamp as a light source in one corner of the room, yay.
Tumblr media
By that time, it was probably around 11:30, so I went to Instagram to chat with friends. Many expressed sentiments concerning the absolute and brain-cell-killing boredom we were experiencing from this new reality, but there isn’t much we can do for one another, especially with social distancing. I borrowed another ebook, titled Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest, by Cheryl Strayed. It seems like a book that’s going to be narrative styled, even as an autobiography, which I can appreciate. Recently, I’ve been on a realistic fiction/nonfiction narrative streak, so maybe it’s a phase? I go through a lot of phases for book reading lol.
Tumblr media
Another curious incident which happened on Instagram, today, was some discussions with my brother’s friends. At this point, they’re sort of in limbo between well known acquaintances to loose friends, in my book. Interestingly, I get along, most likely due to a mix of common interests, thick skin, ability to shit on them as much as they shit on me, joke around, use rude humor, and self deprecate. Not all of which I am proud of, but it’s like the other side of me that I bring out with my cousins and whatnot. Social dynamics are weird like that. Anyhow, I got into a semi-deep and partial joking conversation with one of the boys, concerning the future of us, and how living fast just. might. be. it. The image in question will be reposted above this one.
Any how, this essentially wraps up my day. There was a lot of news on tonight, about COVID19, no surprise, but also about how Bernie Sanders dropped out of the presidential race. Guess America isn’t ready for democratic socialism yet. I don’t have any clue how it would effect the more established generations, like boomers (lol) or Gen Xers, but I guess we really won’t see anymore. I was also tensed and ready to kill tumblr, because I couldn’t figure out the posting on different pages/page links/tags thing, but it worked out in the end, ‘coz, apparently I was overthinking it. Typical.

Day 5 with Atticus
We had a weirdly scheduled day and I guess this is gonna be our Wednesday routine from now on. I had a meeting at 9am so we had to leave by 8:30am to go by my shelter and get my client files so I could review their progress with the director for possible extensions. So I was up by 7, getting dressed at 7:30, took him out at 8, quickly packed his food and stuff, and we were off.
I strictly feed him at 9am and give him 30-45 minutes to eat for regulation and thankfully my boss was cool with me feeding him in her office. Her dog, Hank, was there too and he’s such a good old boy. He was actually present during my job interview and I firmly believe his presence helped me get my job ☺️
Everything was going well until Atticus decided to pee in her office 😂 I brought my enzyme spray so it was a super easy cleanup and thankfully my boss/director laughed about it. I was in the meeting for 2-2.5 hours or so before he and I headed to my shelter.
Today was almost as busy as yesterday. I spent the first hour or two organizing client files, creating goal lists for the remainder of the week, printing out important documents, relaying info to my coworkers about what we have to do in only a few days by working together, and taking hotlines. We had a house meeting to remind them about what communal living entails, quiet hours, chore lists, action plans that need to be done with me, watching your own kid(s), and picking up after yourself. The dynamic in the shelter is really good right now for the most part and everyone seemed really receptive.
Untilllll my lower functioning teenager had a meltdown on his mother. I sent her away so I could help him decompress. I ended up being at work for almost 2 hours longer than I needed to be because of this. The trade off is that I’m hopefully gonna get off work early Friday. Fuckin’ mint. 🤙🏻
We left as soon as I talked to his mother for a while and asked how she was. Gave her a few affirmations for standing her ground and such. Told her about how he deescalated when we began to talk about Minecraft, Megaman, and Mario (ha, three M’s). Encouraged her to take him to the library tomorrow and use their WiFi so he could download some Skyrim skins in Minecraft and show me. I also ended up drawing and coloring with him and this ABSOLUTELY adorable 3 year-old I got in shelter yesterday. He’s a fuckin’ cutie omg.
Attaboy and I went home together. Took him to the backyard to play for a while. Then I pissed him off by having to crate him for a while so I could build and install a baby gate to my home office door so he can’t get in but Ivy can still access her food and stuff.
After that I made some amazing sweet chili-glazed chicken over rice with roasted carrots on the side using some Hello Fresh sorta-like service my mom wanted me to try. It turned out amazing and I’m so full from it 😋❤️ Attaboy fell asleep next to my shoes while I was cooking because of course he did lol
After I ate I took him outside and we played HARD for 20-25 minutes. We ran around together and then played with a pull-rope inside before I put him to bed. He only whined for about 10 minutes and is currently OUT. This kid can sleep all day when not finding something random to try to chew on, receiving lovins’ from others or myself, and attacking piles of leaves outside.
He did so well today. He adapted to the odd schedule super well, did great on the car ride home (to work, not so much), played rough, and I STILL have yet to clean up dog shit. This little boy already knows not to do it inside of buildings and I’m seriously so fucking happy about it hahaha
Things are getting better and I’m giving him just a bit more freedom every day. He’s still not great with his harness and tries to bite it, loves to try to bite his leash, is NOT good when I have to crate him to do something for myself or for his own safety, and I’m still struggling to have him eat more than 1/2 cup of food at a time. He fell asleep in my arms during our house meeting today and I love how normal it is for us to be seen together now to my clients. “Micah and Atticus are in the office.” “Micah and Atticus are outside.” It’s so cute to me haha
Overall, today was a super super productive day! Now to get Ivy to understand that she has to jump over the baby gate and she can’t go under it or whatever. She’ll get it eventually. Just not tonight I guess, heh.

Aug 25 - 2017 -- The countdown to leave is on
Aug 15 We have a couple days before our next guests check in, a couple from Holland, on the 17th in Horta. We decided to save a couple euros and head to Madalena for 2 days. I was tired and for a little while I didn't really want to go, but the cheap side of me said go, go, go. So we got the boat ready, let off of our mooring and sailed out of Horta in the early evening. We anchored in our spot near the fishing piers in order to avoid some of the swell that was surging into the harbour. We only used one anchor this time but had a good circle of space for swinging. The wind was fairly constant so we didn't move around too much. We had a good sleep and the next morning the ferry horn blowing and the construction guys working had us up around 8. We went ashore, and did some souvenir shopping for the first time. Mike got a few things for his kids and a couple more postcards. I bought a t shirt, but am going to pick up some more stuff to send home. I was hesitant to mail anything, to save on postage. But when Mike mailed a package to South Africa and it only cost €7 - well I figured we could spare a couple bucks. Postage in Canada is so much more expensive, and I just assumed it would be similar here. Definitely not. So I am picking up more postcards and will be hitting the post office in a couple days. Our two dollarama solar lights have died on us...too much salt spray I think. The wires have rusted out and now we do not have an anchor light. Well we do, at the top of the mast of course, but the bulb up there is an old halogen and it sucks power out of the battery like no tomorrow, so we were avoiding using it. And since the rule is "an all around white light" for an anchor light, the garden solar lights are an easy replacement. But now we need to do something else, so we went to the Chinese Store - pretty much a glorified dollar store and Mike picked up a whole bunch of different LED's for us to switch out our old bulbs with. The draw on the battery is ridiculously lower with LED's compared to the old ones. It's just awesome. We put some money on our phone here, which I can't believe how much Canadian cell phone bills are ripping people off. We have spent maybe €30 for the SIM card and all of our data since we got here which is 2.5 months already. We've even had to make 2 international calls and it's still less than one month of my MTS bill. Plus because it's EU, any phone plans work through all the countries of EU with no roaming or long distance or anything like that. Canadian cell phone plans are a joke. We hit the grocery store and unfortunately they were looking seriously low on stock. Probably awaiting a shipment, there was little fruit and veggies to choose from (no cucumbers 🥒 at all!). We picked up some rolls, a chicken and some beer. Haha. Then Mike cooked us a wonderful curry and salsa chicken dish. We had it with rice and it was delicious! We enjoyed a nice evening in Madalena and the next morning headed back to Horta relatively early (around 9 AM). The Horta office boys must be tired of seeing me. We have come and gone so many times. But I'm glad that we are still spending our days sailing. So many boats arrive and then just park...for however long...and then leave on another long voyage. I think I would start to dread sailing if the only time we went out was for a long trip. You don't get to enjoy the sunny days of going out for a few hours and then coming back for the evening. Have a beer and some lunch, swim and snorkel outside of a harbour, and then come back for a good rest. So many boats haven't moved, and there really isn't that much to see in Horta. Anyways that's just my thought. Aug 17 Our next guests checked in around 3 PM and they spent the evening going to the beach and checking out some of the cafes and places in Horta. They came back to the boat for dinner, which we made kebabs!! Ohhh they turned out delicious. Mike marinated a beef shank and we put red and green peppers and onion on the skewers. Then fired up the BBQ. I love that we can grill on the back of the boat! Such a luxury! Plus it's August and the Azores are HOT and HUMID! The mugginess was especially bad today, so we were glad we didn't have to cook down below. At least when we get too hot, we can just fall over the side of the boat and cool down. Our guests were only there for that evening and the next day, so they spent the whole next day on the island. They rented scooters and checked out about half the island, went to a museum and enjoyed dinner. Mike and I had a productive day on the boat while they were gone. I sewed a small patch closed on our genoa. This is the sail that I spent hours, pulling out stitches in the winter to get the old ripped sun covers off. After I had removed the sun covers, we had the sailmaker restitch the leech line, which I had to take apart in order to get the sun cover off. It needed some new thread anyways. But there was one triangle patch that on one side the stitches were off and never got resewn. So when we were sailing with it, we noticed it was cupping air and causing drag. We had taken this sail down and put up the working jib for our trip to Graciosa on Aug 7. But now that we were in for lighter winds, we wanted to put the big genny back up. So I spent the afternoon sewing it up in the cockpit. The sail is thick so it was a little tough to get the needle through each time and by the time I was done, my hands were feeling cramped. Oh well. It's done and it should hold well. It's nice to do work on the boat yourself, instead of shelling out a ton of money to someone else. It's one thing if you can't fix it yourself, or it is clearly a better idea to get an expert to do it (like sewing the entire leech line - the sailmakers definitely got that job). But you get a nice sense of gratification when you see the things you've done on your own boat. We headed over to the wifi area, which I was dreading because I needed to try and call my bank and get them to unlock my account. It got locked because we were trying to make our final payment on our self steering windvane (yes still dealing with this) through an app that does international transfers. Well my bank stopped it before it went through and I was informed that I needed to call and do the whole rigamaroll to get it unlocked. I explained through email that I was in Portugal and calling would cost me a fortune. I asked if there was anyway to make a call over wifi (what's app, Skype, FaceTime...anything) and skype was the answer. What a pain in the ass though. First you call a 1 800 number, then the number you are calling, then they have to accept the charges and then you can talk. Well the first couple times I got no answer. Then I got through and the woman told me I had to call the fraud department directly. I explained the Portugal, phoning situation again and she said I could go through Skype the same way and they would accept the charges. Well...they didn't. And wouldn't. I tried probably about 10 times and they kept declining the call. So I tried calling the international call collect number again, and then they were declining the charges too. After an hour and a half or so, I was so fed up with it all. Mike handed me his cell phone and said just make the call and we will pay for it. So I called the fraud centre, explained quickly that this was costing a lot and the man said he would go as quickly as possible understanding my predicament. Then I got disconnected! I was losing my mind. So then I called again, told a different woman the same story. She powered through the security questions and asked about my tried transaction. I explained what is was and that we ended up using my credit card instead and she said ok, I will unlock your account. The entire call took 4 minutes which was awesome!!!! I thanked her very much for her timely help and finally had access to my account again. Good thing we weren't hurting for cash because it had been locked for almost a week. So the self steering. The unit we were supposed to have in March, waited as long as we could into June to get and still don't have. We have made some progress finally. First Mike and the owner of the business were negotiating the final price for a couple weeks or so. We ordered in advance and every month in advance equalled a 3% discount. But the shipping from Argentina to Canada was much cheaper than the shipping to the Azores so that had to be discussed and negotiated. Then there was talk about VAT and all these other figures. Finally we settled on the final bill and received it as an email attachment. Then we went to pay, but ran into issues due to the amount being over $1000 CAD, and Canadian regulations requiring a current bank statement. Well my bank account had just gotten locked so I couldn't get one. Mike's bank statements are in Gimli haha. Plus all this time we still had guests on and off and limited access to wifi. Finally, we were able to get back to wifi, not needing to worry about having guests, get Mike's sister to send us a picture of his statement, and the app we were using put the payment through and we received confirmation!!! Hallelujah! Now we wait for the actual shipment. I can't believe how long and drawn out this process has been. But we will finally have a self steering unit, that works on wind, no power and can really get into the cruising way of sailing. Back to our guests (Aug 18): They didn't come back to the boat until after 10PM. I was already drifting asleep, but Mike was awake and went and picked them up. We talked for a few minutes and then we called it a night. They were taking the 7AM ferry which meant a 6AM wake up. I heard them start packing their stuff around 5:30 and then at 6 I rowed them ashore. We said goodbyes and they said goodnight because they knew I was going back to sleep. Mike happily stayed sleeping in bed and didn't even notice they had left. I crawled back into bed and whispered to him...no getting up before 8. I think I ended up sleeping until almost 10 which was so lovely. Mike was sweet enough to make minimal noise until then. While I was sleeping, Mike ended up talking to the other Canadian boat anchored right beside us. She is from Montreal and we suspected she solo sailed here since we have only seen her onboard. Sure enough, she did. And, she only started sailing about 5 years ago. She's brave! She just had a sister here visiting and in a week or so she will be headed for Madeira and then the Canaries. We exchanged email addresses to keep in touch and I'm sure we will see her in the Canaries, since we are most likely going to go there now. We talked to customs about me getting an extension and he explained that it would be very easy and should be no problem since I'm Canadian. So now the Canaries are back on and Cape Verde will be a quick stop instead of a month long stay. When we were in Graciosa, we met a young 19 year old solo sailor from Germany and he said he absolutely loved the Canaries. And that La Gomera was absolutely beautiful and we should go there. So that's the plan!! It was another hot and muggy day. I enjoyed a swim to cool off and then spent a good chunk of the day reading and relaxing. Before going ashore, Mike and I decided to have another swim/snorkel since we were both feeling the sticky humidity. We rowed the dinghy over to another mooring, because the water beside our boat had some oil on top from the nearby fishing boats (ugh). We went in and right away I found a good sized purple octopus 🐙 hanging out in his home. I showed Mike where he was and when Mike went down, the octopus decided to make a run for it. He swam away shooting ink 3 times. I can't believe how thick the ink is. It made a thick black cloud that you couldn't see anything through. Then we saw the octopus go back to his home. Poor guy. We were just looking but he thought we were a threat. We left him alone and then headed back for the boat. It being Saturday I went and called mom at a more respectable hour - 10:30 AM for her, 3:30 PM for me. We chatted for 40 minutes and she told me she needed to get some yard work done. One of my old jobs. I miss being able to do those things around the house. I actually enjoyed doing the yard work and looking at the yard and hedge after it was looking all nice and trimmed. I headed to the bakery and the butcher, but the butcher was closed. No meat for tonight, oh well. Then sent a few voice messages to my dad, my sister and to Corey (best friend). If I had more time, I would have stayed to try to make calls to them but we were checking out and leaving for Madalena again. I love the voice messages you can send. It's a little more personal then just a text. I checked out with the office boys, paid our 12 euros and we set sail to Pico. We didn't use the engine at all, which I love doing, sailing out and drifting into Madalena. We had a great sail across, drinking a beer and reading a new Ian Rankin book I picked up from the book exchange in Horta. There are not many English books so when I saw this one, I grabbed it right away. My mom has read a lot of his stuff and really likes him, so I figured it would probably be a decent read. I read it aloud, so Mike and I can both get through the book together. Plus it makes it more of an activity for the both of us. Instead of me just sitting quietly reading. Before I knew it we were almost into harbour. We did our double anchor trick to keep us in the middle of the two piers, since there's a couple more big fishing boats that might need a bit more space to maneuver. Aug 20 It's Sunday so we are taking it easy. Today Mike and I got all of our trips around the Azores written down. When and where and who was onboard. I also added up all of our marina fees that we've paid and so far we are at about €200. Not terrible at all compared to the amount some of the other boats will be paying since they never go anywhere. We can cover that with one good full day of paid sailing so I think we are sitting pretty good. That also includes some showers and all the "free" water we have gotten since we arrived. It's been a good day of relaxing and paperwork so I'm content. Tomorrow we have a Belgian family of 4 checking in for one night. They have two young kids (4 and 6) so we will see how that goes. The youngest kids we've had so far were 10 and 11. So this is quite a bit different. Then we have two more bookings in Horta and we are done. So...3:15 right now on Aug 20, I suggested that I would go to the grocery store a couple hours ago. Mike was on the chart plotter getting distances for all the cities so we can add up all our mileage. He said he would come too. I thought for a second, it's really windy, we are double anchored, but maybe one of us should stay back. I didn't say it though. So we went ashore and I set the pace at a fast walk. I hate leaving the boat at anchor. So we got our groceries, and thank goodness the shipment had just come in because there was all kinds of fruit and veggies (including cucumber 🥒). We got back to the boat and she was just where we left her...all good. While I'm lying in bed and Mike is starting to get supper ready when I feel a knock. I said to Mike, it feels like we just tapped something, even though we didn't. Then we started swinging. Being doubled anchored means we don't swing...we got up on deck and our bow was swinging around. Mike grabbed the bow anchor rope and she came up with nothing on it. Chafed through. Shit. So I fired up the engine and put her in reverse to keep us away from any fishing boats. Mike pulled the other anchor up and we tied up to a concrete wall. There's a lot of surge here, so we don't normally try to tie up. We then went in the dinghy and Mike dived down for our lost anchor. He found it immediately and we hauled her back up. Geez! She chafed out on a rock...right after it turns to rope from chain, so at least we still have most of our line. Thank god we were in the boat when this happened. If we hadn't been....there would be damage for sure. And only to our boat...these big steel fishing boats wouldn't even feel us swinging into them. Anyways. Now we will re anchor and this time dive on it to make sure she isn't rubbing against a sharp rock. Moral of the story...always dive on your anchor to make sure she is set properly and your line is good...oh and more chain! We are definitely putting more chain on. We decided not to anchor near the fishing boats and head over near the swimming area. There's more room to anchor...but also a lot more rocks to go into if the wind swings and the anchor drags. But for tonight we would be fine. It's a nice sandy bottom and the wind isn't supposed to swing until tomorrow morning. Mike swam down to check on it and it was digging in nicely but still dragging a very small amount. While he was looking...he saw a rope down there. He pulled on it and sure enough he found a mooring! Awesome luck! So now we are tied onto a mooring with an anchor out just in case. It might be a little rocky, but we will endure and hopefully won't be moving around anymore. Aug 25 Our Belgian family was awesome. Super friendly, easy going family with two absolutely adorable kids. They loved the boat and even though we had bad weather almost the entire time, everyone still had a really good time. The little girl became my new best friend and it was nice to have kids around again. I miss working with all the kids back in Winnipeg so it was nice to tap into my younger self haha. The little boy, wanted to catch fish so bad, so his dad took him ashore and he caught 4 super tiny fish, like 4-5 cm long. They brought them back to the boat and his dad cleaned them and we cooked them up and the little boy was so happy he could eat the fish he caught. The next morning Mike and the dad went for a snorkel around the boat and Mike was able to find an octopus. He brought it up and put it on the boat for the kids to look at and they were so excited. The octopus made his way back to the water very quickly and the kids were loving it. Then we came back to Horta for the 23rd. Which was my moms birthday - Happy Birthday Mom! We had a Spanish couple spend two nights with us. We enjoyed LOTS of food together, BBQ and cooking away. The next day we sailed to a little anchorage on Faial, we snorkelled for an hour or so and I finally saw my first sting rays! Two or three of them. They are so cool, and when they find a spot they flip their fins and bury themselves under the sand. It was awesome. Then cooked up some big fat hamburgers with bacon 🥓, Canadian style haha. Just missing the cheddar cheese. We had a great lunch and another short swim before sailing back to Horta. We played cards and drank wine and brandy all evening and then this morning, they were off to catch their flight back home. Now we have one more booking, just one night and then we are done for the season here. It's been great! We've met some amazing people and had some awesome experiences. I have posted the Caribbean listing on Airbnb. I think I figured out why it kept disappearing - calendar settings - and now it should be there and easy to find. We are based out of St Maarten - and the title is S/V Athena - Caribbean Dream. We will mainly focus on sailing to Anguilla and St Bart's from St Maarten. *Airbnb has changed their rules and regulations and they now say that the boat must remain anchored/moored during the reservation. So we are still advertising accommodations on Airbnb but would prefer to take sailing charter bookings through Facebook in order to comply. We have paypal as a form of payment and although this change is a bit of a pain, we plan to keep doing what we're doing, just using 2 different platforms now. I'm sure the change is due to charter companies complaining to Airbnb or something like that. So in short, airbnb is for accommodation only - sleeping on an anchored boat and sail charters will go through Facebook/PayPal. Anyways that's it for now! Love and miss all of you. Come stay with us in the Caribbean. It's gonna be a blast I guarantee it!!! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ Coconut Seaways (#coconut_seaways).
