Emergent trust and responsibility: three examples
Deschooling and youth liberation
A third convivial current is deschooling and youth liberation, and the proliferation of alternatives to schooling that are led by kids and youth, including those who are in school. The Purple Thistle, co-created with youth in Vancouver, Canada, has been a vibrant example of this: it nurtured a space for youth not only to hang out, but to experiment and learn together without being controlled and supervised, to take collective responsibility for running the space, and to build strong bonds with each other.
The youth-run projects included a community garden, screenprinting, photography, graffiti, zine publishing, discussion groups, filmmaking, animation, film nights, a radical library, sound and music recording, graphic design, fiber and textile arts, and more. These initiatives were emergent, based on people’s desires and priorities. carla was the “director” of the Thistle from 2009 until it closed in spring 2015, but her job was basically to do the bulk of the paper work, support and mentor when asked, and to work as kind of matchmaker connecting youth to mentors and apprenticeships both formal and informal. Overall, carla’s role as director was to function as an anchor to support the fluid and flexible relationships at the heart of the Thistle. Other adults also supported the Thistle as anchors, co-directors, and mentors, but all day-to-day decisions were made by the youth-run collective and the various pods that sprang from it. As Matt Hern, Thistle co-founder and director before carla, said of the project,
I like to think of the Thistle as being really easy in the way that school is hard and really hard in the way that school is easy. So, you go to school for example, or you go to a workplace, or you go to many institutions, you know exactly what you have to do, you know what’s expected of you, you don’t really have to think a whole lot. And that’s nice sometimes; you just walk through it: essentially just follow orders and do what you’re told and you’ll be fine. So it’s really easy in lots of ways. It’s also very difficult because that’s really hard for most people, and because you fight against it and you resist, but the Thistle turns that on its ass in lots of ways. So it’s really easy because no one is telling you what to do, you can do whatever you like, you can come and go as you like, you can figure out how you can access it. So it’s very easy but it’s also very difficult, ‘cause that’s a tremendous kind of responsibility.
The Thistle can be understood as a counter-institution, a flexible container where the participants themselves shaped roles and responsibilities in an open, experimental way. Such counter-institutions can prefigure trust and conviviality, creating space where these ways of relating can be tried out, become patterns and habits, and eventually take hold in new communities and projects.
Many of these relationships ran outside the walls of the Thistle, but were nevertheless vital for creating webs of care and mutual aid. For example, when individuals or groups found themselves in dicey or difficult situations, folks could lean on each other rather than call the cops. Often this meant supporting someone to get the care they actually needed instead of being thrown into the criminal system. Other times it meant creating space for accountability to take hold. These forms of trust and responsibility never crystallized into a public website, handbook, or formal organization; they were relational and ad hoc. We think that people are doing this all the time. In fact, in order to keep it safer for many to engage in these ways, and to hold onto these values as common notions, institutionalization or publicity is often avoided.

Winter of Discontent
by Ancient Clay
Tumblr media
Robert Ryman, Untitled, c. 1963, Oil on stretched sized linen canvas, 77 3/4 x 77 1/2 inches (197.5 x 196.8 cm)
In contemplating the exhibition ‘Manet/Degas,' I find a particular fondness for the distinctive purple walls employed, an appreciation further heightened by the nuanced array of tonal purples. My predilection for colored walls over the conventional white canvas for artistic presentations is grounded in a belief that while certain works may necessitate a white backdrop, the broader spectrum of art benefits from a colorful setting. Implicit biases have historically shaped art display norms, with affluent white patrons in Europe and America dictating the prevalence of white walls. The assertion that colored walls distract from the artwork is, in my view, a questionable rationale, suggesting that if a monochromatic backdrop proves distracting, perhaps the work itself lacks intrinsic engagement.
Black and white photography, I argue, flourishes against a backdrop of grey walls, surpassing the traditional white canvas. Notably, Black artists and curators often integrate colored or decorated walls into their exhibitions, a departure from the practices of their white counterparts. The resistance to colored walls in non-Black exhibitions seems rooted in the conservatism of a predominantly white demographic. While an exception can be made for certain exhibitions, such as those featuring Robert Ryman or achromes by Manzoni, the resistance to colored walls may also stem from a lack of familiarity and vision on the part of non-Black curators.
Addressing this lacuna, the incorporation of more Black curators, possessing a discerning eye and visionary acumen, could potentially alleviate the perceived challenges in selecting appropriate shades, tints, and tones for colored walls. It is noteworthy that resistance to this trend often emanates from the entrenched preferences of majority white individuals, whereas Black artists consistently demonstrate a superior grasp of color dynamics within their works.
This discourse prompts reflection on the misconception surrounding Greco-Roman statues, falsely presumed to be inherently marble-white rather than originally painted with vibrant hues that have since faded. Additionally, it underscores the divergence between artists who must consciously study color theory and those who organically navigate the realm of color within their cultural milieu.
Transitioning to the broader context of art criticism, I lament the current state of art writing, perceiving a decline marked by the marginalization of genuine whistleblowers and trailblazers. The resistance to embracing critical perspectives, particularly those espoused by Black individuals, is emblematic of a systemic bias. The art world, predominantly dominated by white cis men, remains resistant to Black criticality that seeks to propel discourse forward, often diluting its fervor when institutionalized.
Amidst a world grappling with interconnected genocides, I find myself positioned as a perceived "problem" within the art community for addressing anti-Blackness at its root rather than on a superficial level. The conversation is now being co-opted by those who, having weathered minimal losses, opportunistically seek to redirect the discourse while erasing the most vocal advocates between 2014-2023. This insidious shift, coupled with the selective memory of those who decry the absence of action, raises questions about the authenticity of their newfound concern.
The call for riots, emanating from quarters insulated from the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities, is met with skepticism. The inability to crowdfund material support for Black individuals and the absence of sustained systems for striking and material aid render such calls impractical. The historical success of movements like the Montgomery bus boycott, characterized by robust support systems, stands in stark contrast to contemporary slogans lacking substantive actions.
Moreover, the art world's apathy towards cancelations of exhibitions that address anti-Blackness and settler colonial violence underscores the industry's inertia in effecting meaningful change. The myopic focus on petit bourgeoisie and bourgeois strikers, at the expense of those on the margins, perpetuates a skewed narrative that fails to address the root issues. As I finish my applications for the year and day job responsibilities persist, I am compelled to navigate this landscape with a critical eye, ever mindful of the pressing global issues that demand our collective attention.

Book Blurb: When Sam is stuck sharing the streets for Chicago’s summer festivals with a man she can’t stand, she’ll find it’s often a bumpy road that leads to love…. As office manager of the city’s leading luxury boudoir and pinup photography studio, lovable grump Samantha Sawyer has everything under control. With an eventful summer season on the horizon, Sam is balancing a hectic workload while preparing the Buxom Boudoir “Photobus,” a vintage coach bus converted into a mobile photobooth and meeting space, to make the rounds at Chicago’s bustling summer street festival roster. Sam’s busy schedule makes avoiding the difficult parts of her life much easier, but there’s one person who can see right through her to-do lists and icy façade, really see her. A lot has changed in the last year for Russell Montgomery. Years of odd jobs and couch surfing around the country had left him scrambling, but after reconnecting with his brother, Reid (and coming as close to settling down as he’s ever been), Russ now works at a hot local restaurant. Russ has been welcomed into his newly engaged brother’s circle of friends—all except a close friend and coworker of Reid’s fiancée, an intriguingly stormy woman named Sam. Luckily, Sam is certain that the chaos of her calendar will ensure their distance, and she won’t have to deal with Russ or his irritating, handsome smile. But when Russ is charged with the launch of a restaurant food truck for the festival circuit, the sizzling Chicago heat is no match for the fire between them….
Review:
A grumpy office manager at a luxury boudoir and pinup photography studio has finally meet her match in the handsome but sweet wanderlust bartender, but what was only suppose to be a summer fling soon starts to feel like something more. Samantha Sawyer is an office manager at the city’s leading luxury boudoir and pinup photography studio. She’s lovable but grumpy and has a constant need to have everything under control and consistent in her life, and especially after her parent’s own relationship. Sam is busy working at the studio and preparing to work at the city’s summer street festival, but there’s one person that manages to distract her and that comes in the form of a man named Russell Montgomery, a super sweet and handsome guy who has been in love with Sam since he met her. Russell has spent most of his life wanderlust, surfing from country to country, never really settling down anywhere. Russell has reconnected with his brother and started working at the hot local restaurant, and when he decides to finally pursue his future and go to culinary school he knows that means he only has this summer left to spend with Sam... if she would ever agree to go on a date with him. Russell has been asking Sam out for a wile but she always turns him down... except this time she doesn’t. Sam can’t help but feel that maybe she is finally succumbing to Russell’s charm, but the fact that he is leaving at the end of the summer means that they only have this summer to work out what’s between them. With a busy festival that they’re both working, their own past traumas and issues, the will they won’t they is very much happening, but can they work out what they want from each other by the end of the summer or was this relationship over before it ever begun. This one was a friends to lovers, will they won’t they story that felt so repetitive, and honestly I got bored with it. Sam is dealing with the issues from not only her recent surgery but the fact that her parents had a rough marriage, she doesn’t want someone who will choose work over her, she wants someone that will be there for her. Russell’s mother has left him and his brother when they were kids, he sends her emails but she never responds, he becomes just as wanderlust as her and he is afraid to settle down and commit to one place. The story felt like it was repeating itself over and over and honestly, it really could have been cut down to avoid that. Otherwise, if you are looking for a will they wont they, give this one a go.
*Thanks Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

harry styles !  |    look at the credits to find bodie montgomery ( he/him ) ! the twenty five year old camera operator is known for their work on the hit show: ftlog. their fellow crew members see them as being dependable and humorous, however they are actually very blunt and cynical. seeing them always reminds me of countless empty cup of noodles, a queue of buzzfeed unsolved autoplaying on youtube, sleeping til 4pm & staying up til 6am.
hello everyone !! it’s caro here back with another annoying boy. i also play my big dummy percy, but i really wanted to bring someone not famous into the mix. this is my smol bean bodie!! just so you know under the cut is a tw for cancer, & mentions of death
my little camera man bodie – also goes by bo or bode, around set a lot of crew members call him by a shorter form of his last name, monty
growing up was quite uneventful in the best of ways. bodie had a pretty pleasant childhood. loving parents and a relatively healthy, happy family. his father is a big hollywood plastic surgeon and mother an architect. they are both extremely hard working and made it a priority to teach him the importance of discipline and responsibility at a young age. they set their expectations for the boy high.
often in his teen years he took care of his two younger sisters, as his parents both work full time. they had a nanny to help, so he didn’t have to, but his sisters always came first to him and being the oldest he is definitely a protective older brother
cancer & death mention tw :  when he was fifteen, his youngest sister, at six, was diagnosed with leukemia. for 2 years his life revolved around her. bodie was never extremely social to begin with, but in high school he was always invited to the parties & the tailgates. it wasn’t a very hard decision, but the boy chose to stay home with his sisters pretty much every weekend.
when she passed away, his family never seemed to get back on their feet. her room was left like a museum, tears and shouting resulting from his mother whenever anyone touched anything in there. once he turned eighteen, bodie moved out eagerly – nothing drastically far, still in the same city (he couldn’t leave his other sister behind!! los angeles born and raised!!! gimme childhood friends plots!!!!) bodie just moved to some shitty downtown LA apartment. being in his childhood home made him feel like he was drowning. tw donezo!
though his family is quite wealthy, his parents believe in bodie earning what he has, when he first moved out they only gave him some of an allowance every semester to help with his tuition. but he got a hold of his trust fund when he turned 21. he’s v frugal though and doesn’t flash his money at all, most people don’t even really know he has any money unless they knew him when he was younger.
SO bodie graduated with a bachelor of fine arts, concentrating in media arts. he hit the ground running as a production assistant in the cinematography department and that was really how he worked his way up to his position now. he aspires to continue to pursue a career as a cinematographer. the boy has a side hustle and shoots for aspiring instagram models lol, he also shoots special events upon request like weddings/bdays/parties
during his time at uni he met a beautiful gal that he fell In Love with. things moved so quickly between the two of them, they got engaged a year in. it was a romantic WHIRLWIND and a really exciting time of his life. but as they began planning their wedding, small arguments turned into full blown fights. they started spending less and less time together and going on less and less dates. they stopped talking about the wedding altogether, but still went through the motions of being together. he didn’t really know he had fallen out of love at first
this is probably his BIGGEST regret of his life – mainly because it fucked with his self perception and he started to let this define him. ALSO he had always prided himself in his ~goodness~ and didn’t really think he was capable of causing sUCH pain and being sO inconsiderate/selfish.. but he started sleeping with one of his close male friends while still engaged and in a relationship. because of that saying “once a cheater, always a cheater” he just can’t forgive himself and also doesn’t really trust himself. he was YOUNG and DUMB, but still wouldn’t ever use that as an excuse. bodie has definitely learned from his mistake.
OKAY jumping to present FINALLY!!
ftlog was not exactly the show he applied to the position for -- he has been with studio3 for a few years working on shows under other titles: production assistant, 1st/2nd assistant camera, he’s worked in the light department for a few smaller shows as well. bodie never really connected with ftlog, but it's his first gig as a camera operator, so he’s pretty excited to finally be the main guy behind the camera.
he’s basically a big fluff ball that has a past and is just trying his best to Be Happy
bodie is an irresponsible mess most of the time to anything non work related. he has to set a million alarms because more often than not, he sleeps through the first few – literally would wake up late in the afternoon every day if he could (HE LIVES FOR OVERNIGHT SHOOTS), he’s is constantly late to everything unless it’s work related. all his closest pals know if u want bodie to be On Time you have to tell him to get there at least a half hour before he really needs to be. he can only make it on time to set tbh. maybe u could see this coming, but he’s pretty much a night owl. he’ll stay up into the wee hours of the morn dickin around
says “oh baby!”, “nah” and “sick” way too much
overall pretty loud and outgoing once he feels comfy around you
is extremely flighty and unreliable when it comes to all things romantic
has 2 instagrams: 1 for business purposes that is solely his photography, and 1 for his artsy fartsy selfies lol and cryptic captions
CONNECTION IDEAS: a crew roommate(s)!! bodie doesn’t need a roommate for rent reasons, he just is definitely someone that likes the company of roommates. university pals!! maybe a star he shoots frequently on his side hustle, so they’ve developed a friendship. an ex!! bodie hates the spotlight though and actively works to keep himself as much of a fly on the wall as he can so if his ex was a star he’d literally combust the first time they got papped together. there’s a good chance bodie would break it off b4 it really got serious tho. this is all i have rn but i’m down to plot or go of chem!!! like this and i’ll come bug u!!!

ONE / name/alias: Kristin, K, Goose, Sissy, Punk, Lionblood.
TWO / birthday: March 11th.
THREE / zodiac sign: Pisces sun, Taurus moon, Sagittarius rising. The rest of my chart is a lot of Capricorn, and more Pisces and Taurus, because duh.
FOUR / height: 5′10.75″, which everyone thinks is actually 6″. thankfully it is not, as I already cannot find pants that fit me. WHY is everything ankle/cropped length these days? tell me.
FIVE / hobbies: Writing, embroidery, podcasts?? (literally my wife’s answer. but also mine), reading (either intensely, or not at all). This autumn I want to get back into the embroidery, and knitting. My most enjoyed pastime is walking and staring at the trees. I’d love to get back into photography, also. [I don’t really believe in hobbies. I just do things that keep me not insane.]
SIX / favourite colours: royal purple always and forever. That colour green. Rich blues, millennial pink, emerald green, deepest red. Pre-raphaelite colours plus rose quartz, basically (also courtesy of my wife. #wifemind)
SEVEN / favourite books:  Or books/stories that I love deeply. Are they the same thing? Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery; Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke; all the Wimseys by Dorothy L. Sayers; Hild by Nicola Griffith; Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (the audiobook is the best way to consume it); Harry Potter (mostly 3, 4, and 6) by that woman (ugh); An Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye; Beauty by Robin McKinley; The Outlaws of Sherwood, also by Robin McKinley; so many more that my brain cannot deal with this right now.
EIGHT / last song i listened to: If she wants me, by Belle & Sebastian.
NINE / last film i watched: The new Downtown Abbey movie. I was not thrilled but was not displeased. I missed Rose. But there were a lot of nice moments.
TEN / inspiration for muse: the weather, the sky, the trees, the wind; the scent of freshly-mown grass, and of crisp apples; any and all water; the moon; goddesses and witches; my grandmother; my now-dead cat, which is killing me; my wife @junomarlowe; Florence Welch; the Pre-Raphaelites, who also drive me insane; female warriors; JOAN OF ARC; George Eliot; Jane Austen; folk music, folk-art, folk-everything; Botticelli paintings; Egyptian religion; graveyards.
ELEVEN / dream job: bestselling author/happy gardener. more realistically, employed by some sort of community-based or at least -focused art gallery of middling size, with enjoyable colleagues and enough but not too much pressure from the outside world, wherein I get to design exhibits and also engage in public programming.
TWELVE / meaning behind your url: Ten years ago (which is impossible to comprehend) I fell into a bog while on a photoshoot with @partybasilisk, one of my dearest friends in the world. She started calling me a bog-nymph; I had short hair and was much thinner then, and seemed to fit the role. I’ve always been fascinated by bog bodies and bogs in general. I’m very Scottish, so it’s probably something in my blood.
THIRTEEN / top 3 ships: public shipping makes me faintly uncomfortable, but just assume I wish everything was 200% more canonically romantic and gay (@junomarlowe is just writing these for me now. it’s not plagiarism if it’s your spouse, right? Let’s just say that the ineffable husbands are ineffable).
FOURTEEN / lipstick or chapstick: Burt’s Bees chapstick. even tho they were bought by clorox, which is evil. I’ve been addicted for over 15 years now, and there are worse vices in this world. I hope.
FIFTEEN / currently reading: Listening to Over the Top by Jonathan Van Ness. Do yourself a favor and read this, or, better yet, give it a listen. It’s always amazing to have an author narrate their own work, to read their words in the cadence they imagined. I feel so SEEN by this fellow queer person. Beginning to read both The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, which I’ve meant to read since it came out 1,000 years ago, and The Confession by Jessie Burton, who is a gem of a human being and an incomparable writer.
I tag @oftwodarkmoons, @partybasilisk, @yearofthetrialsizedovebar, @bienenkiste. You’re my most active mutuals, two of you are some of my best friends in real life, and I’d love to know more about you!

ShotByZach
Monica Bowden
Jim Leyden
Writing Workshop
Shot by Zach
Zach Miscavage is Philadelphia based portrait and fashion photographer who had an unconventional way of finding his path. His love for photography became more of a passion after his original career path failed. Zach has grown a lot since he has started photography and plans on taking over the city of Philadelphia with his collaborative approach of working with other local creatives.
Before he got started with photography, Zach’s main interest was graphic design. His pursuance began in high school when he enrolled in an intro graphic design course as an elective with his best friend, Jordan Marcus. He had no real interest in graphic design at the time, being that he only enrolled to hangout with Jordan in class. Yet Zach learned a lot as the course progressed, and found he had a gift in design. A realization occured that he should pursue this more seriously, especially when people started noticing his talent. He talked to his guidance counselor and expressed how much he loved it and how he wanted to go to technical school to further his education in graphic design.
Zach knew he made the right decision when he arrived at his technical school. He reached the top of the class by having the highest grades and the best work. He quickly progressed to become the president of his class, and then eventually president of the whole school. While attending tech school, he started his first internship: Barb Print, a screenprinting shop in Norristown. He designed logos and graphics for shirts. He learned more about the business behind art and how to the handle the clientele, being any of the small businesses in the area. “I was happy with where my future was leading” said Zach with a smile. He created professional social media accounts for his graphics on Facebook and Instagram. Zach’s main focus was freelance graphic design, photography was just a hobby. He only had a small following on his social media at the time so it was hard to get established. His hopes for a future in graphic design started to dwindle when he wasn’t getting noticed. Zach described the feeling of going unnoticed as “discouraging… you spend hours conceptualizing a design and creating it just to get a couple likes on Instagram. It was like working for less than minimum wage in terms of recognition” He learned the importance of marketing, how to brand himself better, and present himself to capture people’s attention. He carried those lessons with him throughout the rest of his creative career.
In spite of this discouragement, Zach decided to attend Montgomery County Community College to continue his education in graphic design. His plan at community college was to get his general education classes out of the way then transfer to Parsons School of Design. At MCCC, he was so advanced that his professors had him aid other students that were not up to par. He felt as though he could not excel at the college- that it is was only holding him back, and it was wasting a lot of money. He knew he wanted something else for his future and he ended up dropping out before the first semester ended.
After MCCC, Zach started bringing his camera everywhere, taking photos of anything that caught his eye. Zach believed he would become better with more and more practice. His friends were really into cars at the same time, so he would take photos of their cars and post them to the same professional social media accounts. Car photography became a huge interest for Zach and he really wanted to build on it. With a friend, he created Grey Nation, a social media brand that takes professional photos of cars, attends car related events (car shows, meetups, dealership events), and sells custom merchandise. Grey Nation soon grew to over 3K followers and they got featured on accounts that were even more popular. This was when Zach’s photography started getting noticed.
Zach was also working retail at the time at Urban Outfitters. During a discussion with coworker Khayir Lewis, he realized they both enjoyed photography. Khayir was also working outside of retail, as a freelance model. Zach liked being behind the camera- Khayir liked being in front of it. Khayir told Zach about Urban’s extracurricular opportunities. It was not paid, but they got to engage with the company more by checking out clothing, shooting it, then returning it afterwards. Urban Outfitters looked at it as a way to connect the associates with the brand more. “It gave their social media a more relaxed presence. [Zach could] shoot a dress on a girl [he] knew, instead of how other companies only show their pieces on supermodels.” It was a way to create a bridge between a large company and their customers. Zach took out multiple outfits from the store and he had his first photo shoot with a model ever. “The photoshoot was set in an abandoned building and it turned out great. Three photos got posted on the Urban Outfitters Men’s page, and one got used for an email campaign. I gained about 70 new followers just from those few photos”. Zach and Khayir worked extremely well together and decided to shoot more often.
Their duo eventually turned into a larger team which consisted of Zach, the lead photographer; Khayir, the lead model; plus a stylist and a second photographer. They worked on a few projects and thought they were a good team. All three of them tried becoming more official and wanted Zach to sign a contract, stating they would take 40% of his revenue. It was never made clear what they were putting his revenue towards, so Zach rejected the offer. They resentfully told him they “just had creative differences and that [he] would never make it in Philadelphia without them.” That team fell apart.
But Zach kept shooting. He was able to build a good following off Urban Outfitters because they would post his photos to their social media and he became associated with the Philadelphia based stores (King Of Prussia, Walnut Street, Ardmore, University of Pennsylvania). Zach enjoyed the road it was taking him down. He loved how the photos turned out and Urban Outfitters really pushed his aesthetic- close up portraits with high exposures and bright colors. Zach was having consistent photo shoots with different people all over the city, and even reaching out to West Chester, Pennsylvania too. Zach was happy to be working for Urban and decided to apply for a summer internship at the home office, but he did not get hired. This rejection sparked a major change in him.
Zach no longer wanted to follow the original aesthetic that he had developed for Urban Outfitters. So he changed up his style. For Urban, he had based his aesthetic off the great responses he was receiving from social media, management, and even headquarters, but never had the chance to find his own personal style. Not only did Zach’s photos change, but he also quit Urban Outfitters due to personal interests. He felt he simply outgrew the company and it’s “look” and wanted a more mature, high fashion, look. He still kept contact with the social media managers after he left.
With the change in jobs, his outlook on art changed too. There were many influences in Zach’s life, but the one that stood out the most to him was Maria Svarbova. He loved her minimalistic style and her use of colors that make her images pop. Her photos rely on her locations almost more than they rely on the models, which is something he wanted to do in his photos. Zach compared his short term career goals to Brendan Lowry. Some of Lowry’s projects that Zach highlighted were his Trashcan Takeover and Track Takeover. These takeovers are small art installations that can be found throughout Philadelphia’s streets and public transportation. The Barbera Autoland trash cans and similar ads at the Walnut-Locust stop on the Broad Street Line were turned into canvases for Philadelphia creatives.
Zach began working with awesome companies in the city such as My Coral Home, Wolven Threads, and other boutiques in Philadelphia. On top of that, he started his first ongoing project where he would rent out unique Airbnbs in the city for a weekend and use them as studio space. He was able to focus on refining his work to an editorial style and learning how to incorporate architecture into his photos better. Renting out these Airbnbs inspired Zach to seek his own studio space. The Airbnbs gave him an indoor space to shoot which was hard for him to find regularly, but he wanted a space that allowed him to expand his resources and invest more into his work.
Since he found his true style- cleaner, more editorial, and higher fashion, he decided the next phase in his career would be owning a studio and learning what goes into that type of work. He took on a four month lease at the James Oliver Gallery located in Center City so he could get used to shooting in that environment. But Zach has to walk through the art gallery, a shared kitchen, a handful of other personal studios, and up two flights of steps until he gets to his own studio, so he wants something more accessible to him.
Photography has taught Zach many lessons- the most important lesson being proper micromanagement. “Being a freelance photographer really puts you in control of the final outcome” said Zach. There are a more variables being introduced such as finding locations, conceptualizing the shoots, organizing schedules, coordinating which models would look best in which outfit, or which poses would show off the details of an outfit the best. Micromanagement taught him how to focus on multiple sides of the photoshoot at once. Zach believes he has this ability under his belt, so what is next?
A large motivation for Zach has been collaboration because his overall goal in life is to have a production company. Zach says “It’s all about building a team and collaborating. It’s more rewarding because you only have to focus on one aspect. That aspect can have all of your attention; rather than be spread out by having to style, come up with props, do hair and makeup, this and that. It will also allow better opportunity for commercial work and paid work because of networking.” He is currently working toward that goal by having a small team of creatives on hand that will make his start up easier. Zach has been working with a stylist, a hair and makeup artist, an industrial engineer from Temple University to create props in his studio, and even letting his photographer friends use his studio space for their personal work, which all can allow him to get more involved in producing and directing projects.
Zach also wants to build on his studio space so he can bring more collaborative work into it. He compares his ideal studio to “REC-Philly, which would be having a room for editing, music, writing, and even engineering. That way, there are more assets available to people and make it a great collab space.” By having this, Zach can potentially change the idea that Philadelphia is only a small pond of creative opportunity and can rule out the idea of relocating to New York City. Once Zach gains the right reputation, he knows brands and publishing companies from more cities will begin reaching out to him. Ideally he will have the ability to pitch ideas to brands he wants to work with specifically, rather than taking whatever paid work he can find.
At some point, Zach sees himself outgrowing photography after having a production team. Though it will be hard for him to move past, he wants to “go down every avenue of photography before [he] outgrows it”. He still sees room for improvement in his studio work, and wants to explore other lanes, such as working in videography, set design, and construction. He wants his work “to build on more of a scene that can tell a story instead of just having a set of photos that focuses on aesthetic. I want to pick locations based on the story they tell then work the model and styling in based on that.”
Even after being told he was “never going to make it”, Zach Miscavage has proven to be successful in his field. He has made countless connections and continues to work with notable companies such as Kodak. Recently he shot his first magazine cover for Drexel University, as well as his first wedding. With more experience, he will have more opportunities to get his name out there and become a more renown photographer. He has come a long way since his graphic design days, and looks forward to learning more.

2021.
This year feels like a never-ending filler episode of some show - it’s there because plot development is needed to jump from one point to the next, but overall feels like kind of a waste of time. It’s been trying, it’s been exhausting, it’s been stressful as all hell. It’s been hail and snow and tornado warnings and having to purchase fence posts to burn to try and keep warm when we lost power. But it’s also been dogs and vaccines and more activities to fill our time than 2020. It’s reaffirmed that Texas is definitely not the place for us, and I’m very much looking forward to returning to Vegas next year.
2021 Highlights:
Dexter. I always thought one of the first things I was going to do after moving out on my own was adopt a dog. It didn’t quite happen that way, but Chris and I made a couple humane society visits in early January and immediately knew this guy (formerly known as Mitch) was the one we were going to take home.
Vegas Birthday Engagement. I keep telling Chris I’m glad he didn’t propose on Christmas, because it seems so overplayed to me. But my birthday? Yes, please. We were back in Vegas for the weekend, the temps were 100+, we drank Dutch Bros and played pinball and had BBQ at his dad’s restaurant, and then came an engagement overlooking the Strip before we (finally!) went to go see Piff at the Flamingo.
Fancy yarns. I’ve never been more of a hermit than I’ve become since the start of this year, but 2021 also finally brought me into the world of fancy, hand-dyed yarns and patterns beyond scarves and blankets. About the only money I spend on non-essentials now is on a growing collection of beautiful yarns I haven’t yet decided what to do with.
Texas Explorations. As much as I’ve really come to despise this state (sorry, not sorry), we’ve also very much used the time to explore. We’ve visited friends outside of Houston and Austin (including a weekend trip for me to visit one of my best friends and float the river for a bit!), visited the Wienermobile in Denton, and even made it down to San Antonio in early December for my first race since South Carolina last February. Also, let’s talk about the insanity that is the Texas State Fair (We came, we didn’t quite conquer, we never need to repeat that experience again).
Outlaw Soaps. Just a quick shoutout for some contract photography work I did at the start of the year and all the delicious smelling products that came out of it. The Outlaw crew is a good one and I always appreciate finding companies whose vibes match up with mine.
Books read this year: 125
‘21 playlist (in no particular order): Moana Soundtrack - “How Far I’ll Go” Andy Grammer - “Fine By Me” Zac Brown Band - “From Now On” Old Man Markley - “Song Songs” Thomas Benjamin Wild - “No More Fucks To Give” Reel Big Fish - “Another F.U. Song” Alan Jackson (ft. Jimmy Buffett) - “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” John Michael Montgomery - “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” Andy Grammer - “Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah)” Bo Burnham - “White Woman’s Instagram”

Environmental Portrait- Editorial Research
Editorial 1:

Photographer: Philip Montgomery
Tumblr media
Kathy Ryan, director of photography: “For this week’s cover, we wanted a dynamic, kinetic photo to accompany our article about the modern reimagining of ‘West Side Story.’ Cast members came to a photo studio on a Sunday, their only day off, and danced for hours as the photographer Philip Montgomery captured the passion and beauty of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography, newly conceived for this Broadway revival. The resulting photos are graceful but athletic, much like the show’s performers, 33 of whom are making their Broadway debuts.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like how dynamic this shoot is and how the photographer has captured the subjects movement in their work. The text used on the cover is angular and flows through as though an extension of the dancers limbs. It is small so that it fits into the negative space created without obscuring the performers. This is particularly apparent in the way the name of the publication is layered behind the performers. The article didn’t have any images in it with the exception of the header image. The rest of these images came from the photographic reel that was posted alongside the editorial cover of the magazine.
Editorial 2:
Source: Beauty Papers Issue 9#Fight
Photographer: Harley Weir
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With only a simple logotype anchored to the center of the cover, the photography featured in the magazine is allowed to speak for itself dictating a powerful tone-of-voice for the publication. The shoot featuring British artist Maggi Hambling offer an private insight into her studio environment and creative space. The images allow you to create an idea of the sense of person before at the end of the publication where you are able to read a write up of an interview with her, This is an interesting approach as the carefully curated images build a preconceived idea of what the subject is like prior to reading about her.
Editorial 3:

Photographer: Adama Jalloh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This editorial shoot from Dazed&Confused explores what a decolonised future for the arts look like. Black Blossoms School of Art and Culture founder Bolanle Tajudeen connects with artists, curators and educators to imagine new Black feminist ways of seeing. The type face is small and sectioned off from the images and therefore doesn’t impose on the photos. Each image introduces you to a new subjects perspective on the issue and is used to lead the reader through the course of the article. This creates a nice flow to the piece which is highly effective and keeps the reader engaged with the article.
Editorial 4:
Source: The New York Times, 28/03/2018
Photographer: Mark Peterson/Redux
Tumblr media
Behind the Cover Jake Silverstein, editor in chief: “Defense Secretary Jim Mattis declined to sit for a formal portrait, so Mark Peterson followed him around and tried to get a cover-worthy shot during public appearances. We thought this one admirably captured some of the militaristic themes of Robert F. Worth’s story, as well as the sense of foreboding.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like how the text on the editorial cover is off center so it doesn't subtract from the focal point of the image which is the defense secretary, the white text is easy to read on the monochromatic background and jumps out without distracting from the shot. This use of monochrome carries on throughout the article in reverse with black text being used on a white background under each of the following photos. This allows the photos to stand out more as on a black background they would be lost. The monochromatic theme adds to the serious nature of the publication.

What To Wear For Your Engagement Session
Tumblr media
So it’s engagement photography Montgomery session season and I know our calendar is filling up with folks who want to get some good Save The Date cards sent out. Probably the most common question my couples ask me is what should they wear for their engagement photos. Here are the five simple tips I share with them.
Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Like You
If you guys are jeans and t-shirts folks do that. If you are business casual or super dressy do that. Be who you are in your photos. Too often couples want to get very dressy when the occasion doesn’t have to call for it. Nothing makes a photo shine more than authenticity.
Heck in a few months I’m going to take hundreds of photos of you guys dressed to the nines so my advice is to use your engagement session to celebrate your everyday.
Complimenting Works Better Than Matching
You don’t have to match each other, and in fact, that makes your photo slightly flatter. Complimenting color schemes add visual interest and make your photos pop more. It also gives each of you a little more room for individual expression. Work together for a cohesive look rather than being exactly the same.
Think About Accessories
Our engagement sessions allow you any number of outfit changes in your session, however, you don’t want to spend most of your session time fussing through outfits. You also don’t want a whole session based on one look. That’s where accessories can help.
Accessories can really add a visual punch to an outfit and easily increase the number of looks you can quickly get to. A nice chunky necklace, a beautiful colorful scarf or even a broach can just add so much visual interest, And they aren’t just for women, an ornate belt buckle, a cowboy hat, or favorite cap or even your splashy watch can really help the guys pop.
Opt for Classic Rather Than Trendy Looks
You want your engagement photos to be forever photos so while you may love that lime green maxi dress right now, maybe you don’t want to look back in a few years and wonder why you were dressed as a margarita. Express yourself with pieces you like that are classics and you’ll love your engagement pictures forever.

RIBA International Awards 2021 Longlist
2021 RIBA International Award, Winning Buildings, Best Architecture in World, Global Design Projects
RIBA International Awards 2021
Royal Institute of British Architects Prize Longlist News – winning buildings and designers
22 July 2021
RIBA International Awards 2021 Winners
RIBA announces 16 exceptional new building projects from around the world – RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021
Winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021. The full list of buildings is available below.
● The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announces the winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence, the pre-eminent international awards for architecture
● The 16 winning projects have been selected from entries to the world’s most prestigious award for architecture, the RIBA International Prize
● Each project is subject to a rigorous judging process by a diverse panel of local ambassadors who visit each building
● The winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 will be announced in November
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has today revealed the 16 winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021. The Awards, which take place every two years, recognise the most significant and inspirational projects around the world.
The RIBA International awards are open to any qualified architect for spaces anywhere in the world (excluding the UK – as this is determined by the RIBA Stirling Prize). Projects need to exemplify design excellence and architectural ambition and deliver meaningful social impact.
The sixteen award-winning buildings are spread across 11 countries. Each project has been subject to a rigorous judging process with all buildings being visited in person by a local ambassador appointed by the RIBA.
This year’s projects range from significant cultural destinations such as Modern Art Museum and its Walkways in Shanghai to new city infrastructure such as the elegant Lille Langebro pedestrian and cycle bridge in the heart of Copenhagen; from a beautiful artists’ home in Sri Lanka to a new hospital building in Bogotá that connects patients with nature.
Key trends illustrated by the International Awards for Excellence winners include:
● Buildings with multiple functions to benefit local communities
Examples include a modern family home, expanded to include an outreach and gathering space for the surrounding village, supporting both domestic and community use (Renovation of the Captain’s House, Fujian Province, China) and a village community centre situated between the new and old village to encourage local interaction and provide space for public activities (Dongziguan Villagers’ Activity Center, Hangzhou, China).
● Buildings which find solutions to pre-existing environmental issues
Examples include a community hospital in Bengal which features a series of courtyards to bring in light and cross ventilation with a ‘canal’ feature traversing the site to collect usable rainwater and help micro-climatic cooling (Friendship Hospital, Satkhira, Bangladesh) and an art gallery raised more than a metre above ground level to allow for rising sea levels (The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver, Canada).
● Buildings that are sensitive to historical context
Examples include America’s first memorial to the victims of racial terror lynchings (The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Alabama, USA), designed to honour, document and transform conversations around racial justice in the country and a new entrance building and visitor centre for the Unesco World Heritage Site of Museum Island in Berlin which engages honestly and directly with sensitive architectural and political territory (James-Simon-Galerie, Berlin, Germany).
RIBA President Alan Jones said: “The 2021 RIBA International Awards for Excellence are presented to an ambitious and diverse range of projects from a wide range of established and upcoming architects’ practices. It is particularly important to be considering excellence in architecture at this time – in this fast-changing world, where governments, clients and society need the skills and insight of architects.
Our global awards show how well-considered, well-delivered and well-performing architecture has the immense potential to improve lives and communities. We are very pleased to be able to celebrate some of the most innovative, ingenious and impactful architecture in the world – designed by some of the most talented architects of our time.”
Amongst the 16 winning projects announced today, four projects will be shortlisted for this year’s prize and announced in September. The winner of the RIBA International Emerging Architect Prize and the RIBA International Prize 2021 will be selected by a Grand Jury, chaired by French architect Odile Decq and revealed in November 2021.
The inaugural RIBA International Prize in 2016 was awarded to Grafton Architects for their university building, UTEC (Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología) in Lima, Peru. In 2018, the prize was awarded to Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum, for their inspiring new school complex on the edge of the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil, Children Village.

Top 7 eCommerce Web Design Trends You Must Be Aware Of
What is the trending trend to evolve with time? It is rightly said, "Change is the only constant". Hence web design trends are constantly changing and evolving with time.
Tumblr media
Web designs for eCommerce sites are set in such a way that they extract more clients and study deeply about the client pattern and online shopping habits. It has become easy for people to get their needs fulfilled on their fingertips.
Every business should invest in making its business digital which can cater to the right target audience.
Due to massive digitalization, eCommerce sites have to be competent enough to sustain.
The latest eCommerce development has lead edge technology like the latest GUI, chatbots, micro-interactions, web animations, and a strong security system. Web designers really need to put in a lot of effort to make good shopping experience for the clients in this competitive world. Statistics show that global sales are expected to cross $3.9 trillion USD in 2020. There are a lot of eCommerce web design companies in Delhi which have set a trend for others to follow. What we all want to know is the latest trends, be it in any aspect.
1. Dynamic Animated Shopping Strategy and Video Content Every year we see new trends being showcased. The eCommerce website is designed in a very interactive way. The static images are outdated. Animations, dynamic pictures, GIFS are new trendsetters. As an eCommerce web designer, our main goal should be to drag the user's attention towards some good style buttons, animated loading options, and much more. Ecommerce websites tend to have more interactive elements these days.
We can also see more of:
Cinemagraph, images with small and repeating animations, they are a more subtle form of GIFS.
Video is also one of the most powerful tools in the world full of Youtube and Instagram lovers. According to a survey, people are more inclined towards watching videos and creating a great impact on the viewer's mind, which is more beneficial for people who are practicing video as a part of their eCommerce website. You can promote any product by adding an interactive full-screen video on your website.
2. Let the Story of Your Brand Speak for Itself You can connect to your customer by telling them the real story about your brand. It adds to the sentimental value of the client. Your story can bring connection, credibility, and trust from the consumers.
It's being rightly said, "There is no greater power on this earth than a story". A good story can always add some light into darkness, it can add life to a lifeless brand. It is important to highlight the beginning of your brand. Your passion would reap good fruits for the product you want to sell. The solution to the client's problem should be your goal.
3. Mobile-Friendly Web Designing Approach Every individual is more comfortable to use mobile phones for each and everything. As technology is evolving so are the choices of the people. Customers are happy to shop for things at their fingertips. Hence for the eCommerce web development , our designer focuses on designing web pages for mobiles also. A huge percentage of people are inclined towards using phones/tablets/IPADS for shopping. The main focus is being shifted to gain more profits. The results were very evident that designers focused on making eCommerce websites for mobiles first and the same was being adapted on a large screen.
Even if people like to shop using their desktops, they find mobile features more interactive.
4. Micro-Interactions Micro-interactions are a series of events that are present all over your device and in a lot of mobile applications. The main purpose is to create an engaging and welcoming moment for a person making it easier for a user to interact with your website or application. More eCommerce websites are designing and updating their website with micro-interactions. Micro-interactions would help the retailer to reward its client on the basis of reviewing a product, adding a product to a shopping cart, or subscription to the newsletter. It is basically used to engage users and create habit loops. Micro-interactions turn out to be a powerful trendsetter.
5. Voice Search With Google voice search and Siri in Apple, people have shown great interest in the voice search features. Many eCommerce websites are making a unique and easy way for clients to search and explore products and information. Adding a voice search would not only be time-saving but also easy for the user to search for their desired product without entering into a long list of items. It would definitely shoot up the sales due to ease of choice for customers. This latest feature shopping feature should be incorporated for a great shopping experience.
6. Chatbots and Striking Colors A chatbot is basically an artificial intelligence software that helps in a conversation with a use/customer in a normal language through the application, message application, website, etc.
This feature is helpful not only for answering a query but also offering discount codes, helping in customers' decision making, delivery options, etc.
Striking colors for a website are in fashion. People tend to love the eye-catchy websites with bold colors and a colorful homepage. Bright colors are a sign of positivity. Colors help in connecting with customers., conveying messages, and bringing positivity in shopping.
7. Grid Layout and Original Photography The eCommerce websites are adopting grids as they turn out to be a very effective form of design. They utilize space effectively. They are easy to navigate. It creates a good user interface and improves the website overall.
Its rightly said "A picture speaks for itself "
Applying this logic to your website would bring great profits. It would definitely be a win-win situation. It would make your website attractive. Original, high quality of pictures should be used to do justice to your brand. This helps a shopper to understand the product clearly and leads to more sales and helps in gaining the trust of your customers.
Bottom Line There are a lot of eCommerce website development companies in Delhi who have evolved themselves using these trends and many companies turn out to be the trendsetter. If you have created a very attractive, color-oriented, interactive website, there is no limit to your success.
