Founded more than a thousand years ago, it still draws pilgrims and tourists alike.

Engyoji Temple, situated in on Mt Shosa was used as a location for 'The Last Samurai'. I was privileged with the opportunity to try Japanese caligraphy & sutra writing, as well as visit sections of the temple normally off limits to the public. We visited after rainfall, which had dettered the crowds & brought the mist, adding to the magic of this place✨️

Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha (Hyogo, Japan) This temple is Tendai school. It’s very famous for beautiful moss and splendid colored maple leaves in autumn. But here is also famous as Tom Cruise "The Last Samurai"(2003) movie location. I should come back here again in autumn.

The same place where the film “The Last Samurai” took place where the characters, Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) and Katsumoto Moritsugu (Ken Watanabe) met to talk about current affairs of Japan and America.

My own rough, tentative translation follows:

Number Twenty-Seven: Shoshazan Engyōji Temple (Tendai School) in Shikama District, Harima Province

Mount Shosha, Shosha Neighborhood, Himeji City, Hyōgo Prefecture

A hymn for Nyoirin Kannon:

Reaching all the way To the peak of Mount Shosha, Winds blowing downwards Resounding through the pines are The sound of the blest Dharma

書写山 圓教寺に行ってきました。 ここは映画『ラストサムライ』や大河ドラマ等のロケ地でもあります。 実はこの一週間前、ロープウェイ手前であまりの混雑ぶりに目的地に着く前に挫折したのでした。今回はリベンジ。 一週間遅れで行ったがために紅葉はもう終わりかけでしたが、それでもまだどうにか楽しめました。
