You and Jay weren't really dating, not were you exclusive. But he always managed to give you butterflies, always making you feel that warm feeling everytime he smiled.
The term that suited you best was 'friends with benefits' and that too wasn't entirely right. Because Jay cared, he truly cared about you more than just sex.
But it seemed that tonight wasn't the night when Jay cared, when he softly asked you every step if it was alright, if you were okay. He was rough, his hands and touches were rough against you.
Unlike his normal self, he had failed to notice your slightly red nose and eyes, how you had stopped crying just 15 minutes before opening the door for him.
He had also failed to notice the way you weren't even reacting to his touches, the way you stood still till he was satisfied and moved you to the bed.
Then started the tears, you weren't sure why you were crying. You could tune out your thoughts and focus on him before, what was so different now? But you couldn't stop yourself, before you knew it you were hyperventilating, your breath coming out in small gasps and you choked on your sobs.
Jay has never seen you cry so much during sex, the cries didn't look like those of pleasure. Rather you looked distraught, your choked sobs pulling him out of his trance and quickly getting away from you. Had he hurt you? He felt lightheaded at the mere thought of hurting you.
You flinched when you felt two warm hands cradling your cheeks, "Hey, hey, calm down" he said, as if he wasn't the reason behind those tears.
Oh, but he didn't know. He didn't know how you felt so much for him, how you wanted him to see you more than a friend, more than someone he fucks once a while.
Noticing him not touching you anymore, you push him away. Turning on your side, you curled in on yourself, wrapping your arms around yourself. Rocking your form back and forth, you tried to calm yourself.
"Go, please." your voice came out weak, but you were surprised at how stable it sounded. You probably looked so crazy right now, Jay was going to laugh at you and never talk to you again. He would tell all his friends about how much of a crybaby you are and make fun of you. You probably weren't even going to be his friend anymore.
In the midst of your overthinking, you heard his soft voice, "B-but [name]," you didn't want to hear anymore. He probably hates you, God this must be so awkward for him.
"p-please." your voice now sounded far more worse, so weak.
Jay felt his stomach churn with how the night was playing out, he wasn't mad or disappointed. God no, he was far more concerned for you.
He felt hopeless. He's been there and comforted so many people, but never in his wildest nightmares did he think that he would be the reason for someone's tears. He didn't want to leave you like this, but at the same time he knew he couldn't push your limits.
He grabbed the shirt he flung off minutes ago and wore it. He thought to himself, what would have happened if he had just asked you about your day or made small talk instead of pushing you against your door before you could even realise that it was him.
He always hated seeing you cry, but the sight of you crying because of him was a sight he hated more than anything.
He knew, oh he knew how much you hated whenever he mentioned that this thing was ‘no strings attached’ and what not. But he didn't know what to feel when he went against his own words.
That he loved you, but he was scared. He was so scared that he would ruin this for both of you, so he stayed quite pushing his feelings down. But he ended up pushing you away.
He glanced at your hunched up form as you shook with the intensity of your tears. He swore he didn't care, that he didn't do feelings that he didn't feel about you in that way. But the sound of your sobs was searing through his heart like a knife laced with poison.
Turning his back to you, he stopped himself from running to you and pushing your head in his chest. He's done that numerous times, he's comforted you through heartbreaks so many times yet now he knew he couldn't.
So he did what he did best, he ran. He ran away from you and your shaking figure, from your apartment, away from your life. But most importantly, he was running away from his feelings.

author's note: So sorry for the delay, I'm still not done with volume two, and I wanted to have ready before publishing volume one, but I'm very impatient. The story is so long (it's 39k long at this point) that I had to divide it in two parts. I'm really anxious, because I don't know if this is good... but here you go. Also, the story is narrated mostly on the MCs views, not in first person, but mostly in the ambience that she is around.
Tumblr media
PROLOGUE; And for once, I don't care about what you want. As long as we keep talking
It wasn't that the hospital bed was uncomfortable. It's the ambience, the situation that you just got into that made you uncomfortable.
Jongseong wasn't showing any type of expression, he was just standing, staring at the floor, maybe at his feet. You swore that his soul was wandering somewhere around the room.
You should've ended things sooner.
Maybe it was your fault, somehow.
ACT ONE; I can't lie, it feels nice that you're calling. You sound sad and alone, and you're stalling
Ever since you had memory, Sunghoon has been your best friend. You were both polar opposites, but somehow you still got along perfectly. While Sunghoon was way more reserved, introverted and shy, you were outgoing, talkative and extroverted. Wherever Hoon went, you would follow him as well, as a baby chick following her mother.
And of course you weren't a stranger to Sunghoon's family. The Parks were very well-known around the continent, but it wasn't because of that. Your parents knew very well the five-membered family. As well, you were born in an old money family, from a very old business in the country. They had a very good friendship with The Parks, and that's how you met Sunghoon.
You would always visit the mansion with a huge smile on your face.
"Do you want more donuts, Bellie?" Hoonie asked, his cutesy twelve-year old face, stuffed with the strawberry jam-filled dessert. You held back a giggle, trying hard not to laugh. "Yes, obviously." Soon, you grabbed a donut from the counter. It had a delicious vanilla frosting, but on the inside it contained a nutella filling.
Bellie, Belle.
Those were the nicknames that the family gave you, well… Jay gave you that nickname. It started when you started dressing up as Belle from 'The Beauty and The Beast' every single halloween. Jay kept the name to joke around with you, but it soon became a way that they called you to express how dearly they loved you.
When you played around with dolls, it was a completely different story. With your friends, you used to play with baby dolls, pretending to be mother's taking care of their children.
But some of them didn't truly believe the name that you gave to your "baby".
"What's her name again?" The four year old in front of you asked. She didn't understand what you were saying.
While your friends gave their "babies" names like: Areum, Young-sun, and Lily. You, on the other hand, gave your "child" the following name…
"Noa, her name is Noa."
The kids looked at you weirdly, it wasn't a name that you usually heard, but you had always liked it.
Your parents had taken you on a business trip to Japan, alongside your older sister. They took you both to their offices in the country, where other kids would wait for their parents.
You were left alone, your sister leaving you behind to play with other children. You tried to play around with other kids, but they seemed to ignore, find you annoying, even, because of your chatty attitude.
The only kid who did not ignore you was a girl two years older than you, she was obviously smaller, but she was educated and sweet, and with the knowledge that she had, she held your hand taking you somewhere else to play.
"Play hide and seek?" Those were her first words towards you. "Of course!"
You were only happy that you got to play with somebody, that somebody was not ignoring. You just played around with her, both of your tiny legs looking for places to hide around the building.
And when the end of the day came, and you were being scolded by your mother to hurry up, you finally asked her:
"What's your name?" You said grabbing your glitter backpack.
"My name… is Noa."
The name sounded beautiful to you, something that you'd never heard before. And you remembered her, because she was the only kid who did not blatantly ignore you.
"Daddy, what does Noa mean?"
Your father had complete knowledge of that foreign language, within seconds he had answered your questions.
"It's a really nice name, it means 'from love' in japanese. Why do you ask?"
"I met a girl today, she was named that way, and I thought that the name was pretty."
That was the origin of that name that caused your friends to turn their heads, with time they got used to it, but they always found it curious.
As you were both enjoying your dessert, a presence came into the room. "I thought I told you to leave me one of those." You both turned around to see his older brother.
You were four years old when you first met Jay. Sunghoon had become your play partner and the rest of the kids were on a trip to the United States.
They had finally come back home and at first you weren't that interested, but when you first saw Jay coming through the entrance door, your heart gained experience for what a palpitation was, at least that's what your younger self thinks. For you, he was the most handsome boy you had ever seen, that childhood love that every girl would like to have for themselves.
"Sorry, they were way too delicious, they might have gone to waste." You said with a smirk on your lips. Nearly shoving the donut to his face.
Jay rolled his eyes, a small laugh coming out of his mouth.
"You are something else, if you continue like this you might as well just corrupt my brother with your silly personality."
"I'm sorry, but my personality is not silly." You got up from the seat, standing up in front of him.
For him, you could be a beautiful ray of sunshine one day, and the other you could be a huge gremlin, there was no in between.
"Sometimes it can be… you don't need to get so mad just because somebody finds you cute most of the time." "But I thought-"
He said lowering down his eyebrow, his hands laying on top of your shoulders. Jay sometimes made you feel things that you simply couldn't explain. You weren't in love with him, you just found him very attractive, and handsome…If someone would've told you would be feeling this way towards a boy, you were pretty sure that you wouldn't be friends with Sunghoon if it was because of that.
"When I say silly…I mean cute. Don't really want another cute person close to me, except you."
A sudden flush took over your cheeks, and till this day you are way too sure that something inside of him lighted up, right inside his soul.
But that wasn't the first close encounter you had with Jay.
Sometimes, things got way too intimate.
People knew you in high school as the witty, and silly girl, a ray of sunshine that illuminated the beautiful light blue sky. You made friends very easily, and were actually a good student.
You still hung out with Sunghoon during the school breaks, but because you were in different classes, you didn't see each other as much at school…but you did at home.
Still, the both of you tried your best to see each other at school.
It was one of those days where you waited for Sunghoon at lunch hour, the rest of the Parks were in the same class as Hoon. So, it wasn't a surprise for them that you were waiting for their youngest brother.
Even though you felt fazed at the moment, going back to what happened that morning. You had a small problem with one of your classes, chemistry to be exact.
It wasn't your forte, but you always gave your all, even though sometimes you felt a little bit lazy.
When your mother received your report card, a few days ago, she just focused on the B- that you had gotten in that class.
Among the various 'As' that you'd gotten, she only focused on that class. She scolded you, not only that… She yelled at you.
"Such a disappointment! How are you going to take care of a business with these horrible grades?!" She pressed her hand on your arm, as you looked at your sister, she gave you back a look of pity.
"Eunji, you don't have to be that way, it's just a grade, she does great in every single other class." "If you keep justifying her, she'll stay behind her sister and will continue to be a failure."
It wasn't like you weren't used to being called that way, it didn't bother you anymore, other than that it just made you realize that you would prove your mother wrong no matter what, you would be nothing like her.
"Hey, Sunghoon isn't done yet. You'll have to wait for a little while." Jay said getting close to you at the doorway
You still didn't understand why he never wore his uniform correctly. His school jacket was on, with the unbuttoned school shirt underneath.
And for some reason, he always wore a rock band t-shirt underneath his outfit.
By that time, Jay's hair was cut short. Bangs hanging on his forehead. Which was a problem, because for you… He looked hot. Jay was a good student, but with his image it didn't seem like it.
Girls were always trying to get his attention, as well as his brothers'. It was reasonable, they were incredibly handsome, but for you, Jay was something else.
"Yeah, I don't really mind." You responded, shrugging your shoulders
Jay examined you from head to toe. The way you looked down at your feet, the way your dark bangs covered your face, the way your skin glistened close to the sun and how your pink tinted lips would perfectly fit on his.
He also noticed your scent, a scent of cinnamon and vanilla glaze. It just made him more attracted to you.
Jongseong let a finger get close to your face, he then used three of his digits to move a piece of hair from your face placing it behind your ear. It felt like a light brush against your skin.
"You had a hair sticking out." The boy said with confidence. Your scent makes its way into his nostrils, as if you were tempting him into kissing you. He wondered what your lips tasted like? Did they taste exactly how you smelled like? Sweet and yummy?
On the other hand, your heart was beating irrationally, and soon you felt like your stomach was pressing against your ribs. Why was Jay making you feel such things?
"I can take you somewhere else, that way you won't miss your lunch." Jongseong's voice took you out of your trance in a complete surprise.
"And where would you take me?" You asked suddenly, gaining confidence.
"I know a place." He said getting closer to your body. You felt yourself heat up on the inside. "What about Sunghoon?" You came up with an excuse.
Jay looked back into the classroom. A focused Sunghoon getting in his view, still invested in his notebook.
"He won't mind." The boy said looking back at you, a smirk adorning his lips. "But-"
"Trust me, Y/N. Let's go." He held a grip on your arm, carefully guiding you to wherever he was taking you.
He somehow managed to take you to a place outside of the school territory. It was a burger place, decorated with hanging plants, cacti on the floor and white long couches that sat around the restaurant.
Jay guided you towards one of the couches, a table in front of you.
You both proceeded to order from the menu. Shy to order anything without having your wallet in hand, just having a few dollars in your pockets, Jay said the following. "Don't worry, order anything you want. Lunch is on me."
You nervously shook your head. "No, no. I'll pay for my own food." "It's alright, I'll pay for you. I don't mind." He smiled.
In the end, both of you ordered what caught your interest from the menu. And when it arrived, you were ready to devour. You know those delicious hamburgers with a juicy patty and that magnificent melted cheese? Well, that's what you were devouring, including those delicious cheese balls that you always liked.
"Can I have some?" Jay asked, pointing at the basket full of the delightful appetizers.
"Well… Let me think about it." You said while grabbing a cheese ball. A hum escaped your lips as you pretended to think about giving him the snack. "Ok, you can have it."
Jay happily grabbed the cheese ball from your hand, and just as he cheerily ate the snack you giggled underneath your breath. For you, he looked cute. And you continue to enjoy your lunch together, sometimes the silence that you would be in after a conversation, would be comfortable and warming.
Sometimes you didn't notice how he would stare at you in awe, as if he was seeing a hidden wonder from the world.
And then you asked him something, "Have you thought about what your grandfather told Sunghoon?" The inquiry you made had caused Jay to get out of his trance. He looked at you with strange eyes, as if he was thinking about what he wanted to answer.
His grandfather had always been skeptical, also a little bit stressful. When the boys were just little kids, he kept talking about how they had to continue the family business. They were just five at the moment, and they didn't understand what he meant. But as they grew older they soon got a hold of the situation.
'Park Enterprises' has been a family business since 1962, exactly founded by Mr. Park, it started as a small office, a business to start technological advancements. Soon, the company grew to be huge, having three different branches in South Korea.
SPE, or The Southern Branch, is the one in charge of the Nanotechnological Advancements. NPE, also called The Northern Branch, is the one who takes care of the Communicative Technological Advancements. Meanwhile WPE, or The Western Branch, is the one in charge of Healthcare Technological Advancements.
The enterprise had become an empire that had spread around the world. With different sucursals in Italy, U.S, even some countries of Latin America. It was clear that it was a very successful business, a well known name that was stuck to the public's mouth.
No matter what happened, the brothers saw this business as their future responsibility. They wanted to make their family proud, and they were ready for whatever they had to do for the family business, even if it was not what they wanted.
"If my family thinks that it's for the best, then I'll do whatever they want me to do." You looked at him, raising your eyebrows with curiosity and surprise. You always say Jay as a man that was stubborn and obstinate, if he didn't like something he would say it, and he wasn't someone to give in easily.
So, you scoffed. "That sounds so weird coming from you." He raised his head looking at you. Jay knew that somehow you were right. He didn't want to be brainwashed by his family, but that business was his family's pride and joy. He wasn't ready to let them down.
"What do you mean?" Jongseong pretended to be clueless. A sigh escaped your lips.
"Jay, you can't have kids when you are just 17." You stated calmly. "You also can't get married at your age, you are too young."
It wasn't that you were saying it just because of Jay. You were saying that to yourself too. The reason why you had met 'The Park Family' in the first place was because you came from an old money family.
Your family owned a business, 'Baezen Corp'. An investment company that has been led by your family from various decades and generations. Your older sister was the first in line to take charge of the president position in the company, meanwhile your family still analyzed what position you would have under the business (if that's what you wanted), as you were still young and they still wanted to check if you were perfect for the family business… and with the way that your mother saw you, you found it a little far away.
"They didn't say when they plan to engage me with someone." He muttered under his breath.
You slightly shook your head in disappointment, trying your best to alleviate the bad energy that you had just provoked.
"Also, do you even have an idea of who you want to marry? What exactly do you look for in a girl?"
Jay, then raised his head to look at you. He parted his lips getting ready to start talking, as if he already planned what to say even before you asked the question.
"I'm looking for a girl that is sweet, a girl that looks like an exact representation of the moon, but that her personality is just like the very rays of the sun falling into the ocean waves." He proceeded to stare at you, looking deeply into your eyes, as if he could read your soul. Jay's cat eyes shone from enchantment, anticipation, almost as if he was under a spell.
A spell that you might have put on him, his gaze was enough to make your heart race, and to make your fingers tingle from excitement.
"I want a girl who is intelligent and has a passion for learning. A girl that smells like cinnamon spice and vanilla. I'm looking for a girl whose lips will taste just like an exquisite dessert. And lastly, her eyes have to shine like the moon reflects itself on the water when she looks at what she loves and desires… Just like you, right now."
His last words made you blink in shock, you hadn't noticed how hard you were staring at him. But it seemed that at some point you might have been under the spell that he had been just a few seconds before.
"Sorry, it's just that your description sounded so poetic, I didn't know you could be so romantic." "There are some things that you don't know about me." He smiled.
You cleared your throat before proceeding. "Where have you seen a girl like that, anyway?"
You saw the boy get closer to you, moving his seat right beside you. Then, he moved his hand close to your locks, moving them away from your face.
"It might surprise you, but I'm staring at her right now."
That was the moment that your breath got stuck somewhere around your respiratory system. As if you had forgotten all of a sudden how to breathe.
You had expected Jay to tell you all those things. Yes, he was a tease sometimes, but never intimate with his words.
"Jay."
For a second your lips parted, and you felt that you were getting closer to each other, as if your lips were to touch at any time. The boy creeped a hand down to your neck, causing small tickles on your skin. His eyes were now dazed, left with nothing but a small glimmer.
And then the phone rang, Jay's phone to be exact.
You both backed away quickly, and you nervously passed your hands on your skirt, as if you were trying to keep it clean.
"I-It's Sunghoon, we better hurry. Class is about to start." This time he didn't look at you. It was like he was ashamed or was simply just shying away from you.
"Yeah, you are right."
It wasn't a few hours later, when you were at their house that things got intense. You had asked Hoon to help you with some homework, but he told you something that you weren't expecting.
"I don't really remember any of this, but you can ask Jay for some help."
And that's how you ended up at their study room, with Jay right beside you, giving a quick eye to your chemistry book, before turning to the next page.
How was it that he smelled so good? Just like amber and citrus, a small touch of wood but also warm.
How was it that he caused you to want to crawl out of your skin? The fact that he wasn't bothered to help even though he had better things to do, was causing a small race in your heart.
"It isn't that hard, it's actually quite easy. You just have to identify the components and use the formula. The formula is not that hard either- Bae, are you listening?" He waved his hand in front of you, causing you to wake up from your trance.
"I thought I lost you there." You looked directly at his lips, the mark at the middle of the skin calling your attention. It was as if they were calling you, calling your lips. You wanted to kiss him.
You inhaled deeply, getting ready for what you were going to say.
"Can you finish what you started?" Jay looked at you confused. "What do you mean?"
It was now you, who got close to him. Your hand making itself comfortable at his cheeks, the naughty of your thumb rubbing the end of his sharp jaw.
"Can you finish what you started? Please." You said with a little plea in your voice, like your body was desperate for his lips.
Jay looked hesitant, but he didn't waste a second to pull the same move that he did at the restaurant. His fingers guiding themselves to your hair, and softly caressing it in a comforting way.
"If we kiss then, I don't think I will be able to stop." "Then don't, just stop until you've finished what you provoked in me."
And that's when it happened, when the soft flesh touched yours, how you felt them pressing against your upper lip. He then moved them trying to start a monotonous movement. You felt his hands then at the bottom of your hips, your skirt being the only thing that stopped them from touching your skin.
You both felt as if you were running out of air, so you slowly disconnected your lips from the other.
Your hand was still stuck to his jaw, and you stayed like that until you came out from your dazy phase.
"I-I have to go back home." You stood up from the sofa, grabbing your stuff and letting your feet lead you to the door.
A while after that, both you and Jay pretended that nothing ever happened, and getting close to each other caused certain things on your skin, you were way too nervous to be around each other.
The Park Brothers graduated high school and that just meant that they were a step closer to getting what their family wanted.
You followed their steps two years later, and even though they were occupied with college, they still had some time to enjoy with you. It wasn't the same as it was before, but it was still fun and joyful.
But, it wasn't until you were twenty-one that something happened. It wasn't disheartening, it was just weird and obviously unexpected. You knew that you had feelings for Jay, you couldn't deny it. It was the butterflies and pixie dust that you felt every time you were with him.
"Unnie? Is something going on?" You asked as you walked into the backyard. Your parents were sitting across the huge table that decorated the garden. Your sister, Juni stayed at a distance, like she was trying to keep the situation from getting more awkward. She wanted to be there, but not didn't really want to invade your space.
"Mom and Dad have something to tell you. We thought that it would be better if we stayed here so you could take fresh air." Juni softly grabbed your arm guiding you towards a chair that was just in front of your parents seat.
You adjusted the skirt of your dress, and then noticed the serious expression on their faces. Mr. Bae and Mrs. Gwan, two successful business leaders that were well respected by the public. These were their faces when they had a critical meeting, when they needed to be direct and strict towards some clients.
"Is something wrong?"
And that was the same expression that they taught you just by doing it themselves. Something that no client wanted to see, neither any single worker and worse, their own daughters.
"Dear, you know how important Baezen Corp is to us. It's been an essential part of our family for a long time, and the thing is that joining our hands with other companies wouldn't be a bad idea, especially if it means for the future of the business."
You frowned at your father's words. Not because you found it weird, but because you already knew all those things.
"I know, father. You've been telling me that ever since I have memory, but it terrifies me what you want to tell me."
Your parents glanced at each other. Getting ready to tell you the news.
"Darling, your sister is soon becoming the president of Baezen Corp. and that means that she is going to need a vice-president by her side to help her manage the company. And you've proven to us that you deserve that spot." Your jaw fell in surprise, you never thought that you would be vice-president for Baezen Corp. You thought that you weren't good enough, but your parents have now proved you wrong.
"Is it really? I can't believe this. Thank you so much, I promise that I won't fail you." You stood up from happiness, but your sister put her hands on your shoulders for you to sit back down.
"That's not all we have to say, dear. There's more to communicate, and we don't know how you'll react." The smile from your face fell.
"How I'll react? How I'll react to what?"
Juni gave them a short glance before they continued speaking.
Your mother cleared her throat. "Y/N, we've been talking a lot with The Park Family, about how we want our business to grow and how we want it to last for many years."
"And we thought that it would be better if we join our businesses to make a new branch, where the next generation of our family will be in charge. So, not only are our companies joining together, but also our families."
This was the moment where you knew what they were talking about, this wasn't about you taking the position of Baezen's future vice-president. This was about your family making sure that you kept on for various generations. That was when your father spoke up again.
"Dear, you are getting married to Park Jongseong."
There was a huge fog that fulfilled your mind, and it felt like the world was moving all of the sudden. You weren't ready to get married, and it wasn't because of Jay, it was just that you wanted to get married in your own will, with somebody you loved and that loved you back.
Your body went numb and you felt your legs shutting their nerves down, as if you had gone paralyzed by the shock.
"Y/N, you got to understand that it's all for a major good." The voice of your mother sounded so distant and incoherent, as if you were underneath the water. You could feel your sister's hand across your shoulders, soothing you into a state that was supposed to be calm, but instead you just felt confused and lost.
You didn't want to get married.
You could not get married.
Because…
Jay didn't love you.
At least, that's what you feared...
ACT TWO; And whether we're free-willed or predestined, clearly I've not learned my lesson, even now. Hope he doesn't strike me down.
For the following week, you were dazed, nervous and stressed. Your special task was to maintain a peace of mind that you simply didn't have at that moment.
It was as if your brain was on fire, you were full of a million questions that weren't being answered for you.
Did Jay know any of this?
Was he in the same state as you were?
Did he approve any of it?
Did he hate you?
The less that you wanted was Jay to hate you, you wanted the exact opposite. But you didn't want to force him to love you.
At the moment, you were at one of the tables from a luxurious hotel. It was a company party… Park Enterprises' party, to be exact.
You felt embarrassed to be there, but your mom's tightening grip kept you in that place, her fingers hurting the delicate skin of your arm.
How red would it be after that…
Your entire family was there, not only because they were friends, but because your engagement had a lot to do with it.
Hands went to a glass of wine that had been given to you by one of the waiters, you drank a few sips, enjoying the taste of grapefruit and kiwi that the alcoholic drink contained.
The clinking of a spoon against a wine glass was heard across the room. The Parks had rented the whole building just for this event, and even though it didn't seem pleasing for the management, it was beneficial for the hotel owners.
"Dear guests, I hope you are having a pleasing evening. Thanks for coming to the celebration of Park Enterprises' 60th anniversary." Mrs. Park wore a long black dress, it had small pieces of diamonds decorating the torso of the clothing, she wore long sleeves and her jet black hair was down.
She looked so young and happy, like she had just found a lucky charm for a special collection. She looked… Proud.
"But, we are not only here for that. We are here also, to celebrate something really important."
"Soon next year, our son, Park Jongseong will become the chief executive officer of Park Enterprises' Southern Branch." Those sudden words made your heart leap up to your throat. Jay was finally taking his family's footsteps and for some reason that got you scared. That could mean that you both wouldn't spend as much time together as a couple. You would be vice-president of Baezen Corp. and Jay would lead the Southern Branch as its CEO.
People clapped from joy, or maybe compromise, you could care less, but being at the party just made you wish for some fresh air.
Maybe it was because you couldn't keep your eyes away from Jay, he looked so elegant with his tux, not only that, but he also looked hot.
You walked away from the room, going towards the pool area, the water being an artificial blue, looking just like a blue flame. The area was big and nice, with a clear view towards the city lights of Seoul and its buildings. There were various pool beds, big and round with white sheets, but gray borders. You sat on one of them, right below a louvered roof that was connected to a wall.
The thought of Jay being your soon-to-be- husband was terrifying, not because you were marrying him, but because the thought of him hating you because of it was eating you alive.
But there was another thought on your mind. Your first kiss. It was with Jay, he was your first kiss, and for you, the fire that was coming up inside your body that day was coming back the moment you saw him with that tux, he looked so professional and mysterious, as if his aura was different.
Jay had always been confident, but this time it was different, he looked… powerful. Ready for everything and anything.
You caressed your exposed leg, eyeing the soft fabric of your white, short dress. You kicked off your heels, feeling them press against your ankle.
The water from the pool was moving, but in a calm way, you tried concentrating on it, trying to forget about everything that was going on. For one night you just wanted to relax and forget.
A shriek escaped your lips when you felt contact within your skin. It was a hand, and when you turned around, you fell deeply into that familiar and deep gaze.
"Why aren't you at the party?" You brushed Jay's hand off from your shoulder. "I needed some fresh air, it was a little bit suffocating in there."
Jongseong passed a hand through his hair, keeping it away from his face. "Are you okay? Be honest with me, Y/N."
No, you weren't okay, there was something strange building up inside you, the fingerprints of your hands wanted to touch him so bad, it was a necessity at that point.
"I'm okay, it's just… you know, things have been weird recently and it can be kinda overwhelming."
Jay knew that there was something that you weren't telling him, you were hiding something, and deep inside him, he wanted to uncover it and at the same time he wanted to kiss you so profoundly that you would both forget your names.
"You are lying, baby." He grabbed your chin, making you look at him. Jay needed you so bad, he was done hard for you, head over heels.
You inhaled before answering again. "I don't want to be your wife if you don't love me."
"This isn't about love, Y/N. This is about our families… but that doesn't mean that I don't feel something for you right now." Jay looked at your lips, they were glossy and red.
Beautiful, he thought.
"Do you love me, Ms. Bae?" You feared what would happen if you answered that question truthfully, and Jay did too.
"I don't, Mr. Park." You lied with an awkward smirk, you shamelessly lied, and somewhere inside him, Jay knew that you were lying.
And Jay swore that his heart shattered when he heard those words come out of your mouth. So, he came up with the next question.
"Do you lust for me, Ms. Bae?" His eyes turned dark with curiosity.
"I do, Mr. Park." You whispered underneath your breath. Your face being inches from touching. "Do you lust for me, Mr. Park?" You said feeling his lips almost brush yours.
"You already know the answer to that." And with that, he kissed you. And he did roughly, it was so rough that you grabbed his hair as your lips crashed against each other.
His hands moved towards your hips as they did the first time. He didn't want to ruin this, you didn't want to ruin this.
You loved each other and you knew it, but your biggest fear, for the both of you, was that your arranged marriage would kill off that passionate love that you felt ever since you were teens.
You both knew you lied, but it was better to know that lie than knowing the truth and then it being shattered.
And when he laid you on that bed, you both knew that this was the start of something new.
A beautiful and lustful lie.
ACT THREE; After everything you put me through, I somehow still believe in you.
Your heart was about to break through your chest, all because what was happening at the moment was completely unbelievable. When you were little, you always had this fantasy that you would get married to Jay, your parents always said it as a joke and to play around with you, but you never thought that it would actually become a real thing.
Because right now, you had Jay dressed up as a groom in front of you, his hair back, only a few strands in front of his face.
The way his warm hands held your cold ones, and the way you felt your heart fluttering because he was right there, in just a few minutes Jay was going to be all yours, your husband.
It was just the way that you felt your feet go numb by knowing that he was about to say his vows to you.
He looked so unreal and so elegant, but if you could be inside his mind in that instant you would've been overwhelmed by how overestimated Jay's brain was at the moment.
Jongseong thought you looked so beautiful, and the way you pressed your lips in nervousness was heartwarming. He knew that at heart he wanted to be with you, so bad. He'd never had such strong feelings for anyone before, in his entire life.
Seeing you right now, Jay realized how bad he wanted things to work out, how bad he wanted you to be his wife. But he was afraid, he was afraid to grow attached to you, because he was afraid that after this you would both end up heartbroken.
"I, Jay, take you, Y/N, for my lawful wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life." He meant that last part, with his whole heart he meant it, how could he not love you.
But how can you love someone and also be afraid of loving them?
"I, Y/N, take you, Jay, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life."
Your parents were watching, both of your families were watching how their kids were fearful to love somebody with such passion. How could you be able to survive something like this? Pretend you both didn't love each other just for the mere fact of fear.
The ring exchange was just around the corner and everything just felt more surreal, as if you were stuck in a dream, a dream that was magical, but also painful.
The rings were presented to you, Jay grabbing yours, a beautiful ring with a shining heart-shaped diamond on its center.
You swore you saw his hand change, but he was shaking in anticipation, in amusement. Jay held back a chuckle, trying to keep it cool, but he gave a quick glance to you with a nervous smile, lips sealed together.
"With this ring I, Jay, take you, Y/N, to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, and trusting what I do not yet know, I will respect your integrity and have faith in your abiding love for me, through all our years, and in all that life may bring us." Jongseong slides the ring on your finger, feeling the cold sensation of the sacred ring in your digit.
You gave him a warm smile, a smile that he dearly loved ever since he was a kid.
"With this ring I, Y/N, take you, Jay, to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, and trusting what I do not yet know, I will respect your integrity and have faith in your abiding love for me, through all our years, and in all that life may bring us." Now the both of you had a ring in your fingers that joined you together, you were now one and only one.
You could daydream a life with Jay, but you couldn't envision it in your day to day life. Not because you didn't desire it, because it all felt so unreal.
You were now getting married to somebody whom you were afraid to admit that you loved. And he was feeling exactly the same.
The both gave each other a glance, your eyes connected, not being able to pull them apart from the other.
"By the power vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now seal your union and the promises you've made to each other this day with a kiss."
You looked at each other for a moment, this was it, you were now sealed by sacred union.
"May I?" Jay whispered.
You nodded your head with a shy smile on your lips. "You may"
The feeling of Jay's soft lips on top of yours was warm, candid, and sweet. Cheers from people could be heard from behind you…
From now on, you were husband and wife.
"This place is really nice, it's really pretty."
You had arrived at a hotel in Bali, something that your parents had planned, which was not a surprise. The flight was quiet and peaceful, Jay fell asleep on your shoulder, which caused your stomach to do weird tricks in you, you were more than nervous.
"I want to get to the pool first." Jay said placing your bags at a corner of a room. You felt his presence coming closer to you, his warmth betrayed him completely.
"So, can I call you Mrs. Park now? It has a nice ring to it." He placed his head near the crook of your neck, causing your skin to go ticklish that it made you shrugged. "Somebody's sensitive." Jay got away from your neck, but before getting away could do that, he placed a quick peck on your skin, which caused your cheeks to redden.
"And also shy."
He propped himself on the bed, his back resting against the bed frame. Jay took off his black leather jacket, letting it fall beside him.
You walked up to him, setting yourself on the large queen bed, sitting right beside him. "Can't believe I'm married to you." Jay murmured.
"Is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing?" You asked him with curiosity, he could feel your gaze on him. "I don't know, you'll have to figure it out." He turned his to the side to look at you, raised eyebrows, cocky expression. "You are such a tease." You whispered.
Something overpowered you, as you let your legs guide you to where your soul wanted to go. You found yourself resting on top of Jay, on his lap, your eyes looking at his lips and then looking at his sharp cat eyes.
You felt his hands naughtly making themselves comfortable on your hips, the right one rubbing your lower back, he roughly pulled you closer to him and you grabbed his shoulders adjusting your body to his figure.
"I want you to kiss me right now." His smirk was such a provocative point and the way he missed the taste of your lips made him want you closer to him. "I was already thinking about that."
He pulled you closer to him, your lips sealed against the other as he tasted your lips and the vanilla flavor they had. He continued to caress your hips in a caring manner and you finished the night with the both of you feeling the warmth of each other's skin as you hugged the other.
The sun fell through the window as you blinked trying to keep the sleep away, you got up to the bathroom just to wash your face and do your skin care before finally washing your teeth.
You heard the water running and knew that Jay was getting ready for work.
"Good morning!" You said with your mouth full of toothpaste foam. "Good Morning!" Jay responded as he washed away his soap.
You continued with your routine as the morning went on, you cooked breakfast and prepared Jay's lunch bag.
"Belle I'm leaving!" You heard his voice soon, noticing that he was already by the exit. "Wait, your lunch bag." You sprinted towards him.
"Thanks." You saw his sweet smile, being completely grateful for your efforts and your food.
He loved when you did that, when you cooked for him, but he preferred when he cooked for you, he loved doing things for you and it was slowly becoming a habit of his.
"See you at night." Jay pulled you closer to give you a quick peck in your lips, before caressing your cheek.
You saw him go away and you stayed at the frame of the door as you heard the engine go off and him driving away.
With that, you got ready yourself and packed your stuff to get ready to work. That was the way that you started your day ever since you got married, and you definitely liked it.
"Thanks as always, Heeseung."
You had gotten off from your car, whose driver was your secretary, Heeseung. He was new to the business, but he was organized and really respectful. He parked your car at the covered parking lot of the company.
The small sound of your sneakers pierced through the walls of the underground lot. You had Heeseung behind you, who wore a dark suit with a blue-patterned tie.
You walked right through the glass double doors that guided to the building offices, you checked yourself through the glass, making sure that your outfit was well arranged.
A satin primrose dress was adjusted to your body, but it kept itself away from your shoulders, a similar colored belt defined your waist, a pair of beige shorts hugged your thighs and a pair of platform sneakers covered your feet.
"Heeseung, please contact President Bae. We have a meeting with the council, do you think you can remind her of it?" The young man agreed, quickly taking out his phone to contact your sister.
"Good Morning, Mrs. Bae!"
"Good morning, Mrs." A pair of coworkers greeted you after they heard you walk through the doors.
You greeted back with a warm smile as you led yourself to your office. Heeseung opened the other set of glass doors for you, and then you left your bag on the desk to sit on the soft white leather chair.
It annoyed you that your mother had called just to tell you that she thought that your work could be better, that she was disappointed with your levels of work. Even though you slept late most of the time to make up for what your sister missed, and taking care of the arrivals of new clients.
Throughout the rest of your day, you checked the work of the staff and completed the work that your sister couldn't do at the time, you scheduled some meetings and at some point of the day you received a visit from a dear friend of yours.
"How's my Bellie doing?" Hoon was always occupied, ever since he took charge of The Northern Branch he was always taking care of something in the company building, not only that but, also overseas, it was like he lived farther away than before. He was always somewhere far, like the U.S, Europe, even other countries of Asia.
"Sunghoon, it's good to see you." You got up from your desk to hug him. He'd recently been in Los Angeles, to make a deal with a communication company for a further partnership. "I was just walking around the area, decided to pay you a visit." He ruffled your hair making it a small mess
You both sat down at one of the tables in your office, you offered an ice coffee with a dessert.
"I thought you would have a girlfriend already, you know, have settled down." "You know that I don't really want a relationship right now." Sunghoon had always been like that, he had always thought that he needed some time for himself before getting into a relationship. He felt bad for rejecting various girls, he wasn't capable of breaking their heart, but he wasn't gonna force himself into a partnership either.
"How's married life going?"
He bit down the glazed donut with strawberry jam filling, it reminded him of his childhood years and how much fun he had during those.
"Everything is going great, though I believe that we can improve some things."
You remembered how things were a few months ago, and how you had been feeling since.
The fact that your parents planned a honeymoon after your wedding was just perfect for you.
Jay was excited that day and you were more than him. After all, you were finally married, which sounded so weird to say out loud.
You spent a lot of time together, but back at home it wasn't any different. You stuck to each other for everything. If Jay was cooking, you were there, if you were working at the home office, he was there.
And the intimacy… was the way to compensate for the words that you feared to say.
But, you sometimes doubted if what you felt was lust, or if it was love. You knew there was love, but there was always some fear to express it. And that wasn't really healthy.
You thought that if you just kept it there, you would both be perfect as it was. You didn't want to ruin anything, because then…there was no turning back, there was no fixing anything.
And you didn't want to lose Jay, and he didn't want to lose you.
So, if that meant being inside each other's backburner, then you would do anything to keep him.
Sometimes it was sad, you wanted to hear Jay saying "I love you." You wanted to scream those words out loud.
A time later after having a conversation with Sunghoon, he left.
You got out of work, bring various documents with you. Waving goodbye to your co-workers, you got your phone out to contact Heeseung.
Your white nails clicked against the back of your cellphone. The fake gems in your fingernails shined because of the sun reflecting on them.
The phone rang a few times, but then it sent you to voicemail. You rang it a few more times, waiting for Heeseung to pick up, but he never did. So you called Haewon instead.
"Hey, Haewonie! Have you seen Heeseung? He isn't picking up my calls."
"Sorry dear, I haven't. He went out in a hurry a few hours ago, so I haven't seen him since." You then thanked her and hung up quickly.
A thought came into your mind.
Jay has picked you up before, but you didn't wanna bother him. It was wednesday, so I went out of work early that day.
You gave it a second thought before finally calling him.
You waited a few rings, before you finally heard his voice. "Hello?"
A sigh from relief came out of your throat. "Hey! How's everything going?" You asked, trying to be polite.
"I'm good, a little bit tired, but I'm heading back home. Are you there already?" A finger unconsciously rolled one of your locks, you continued playing with your hair as you enjoyed the sound of your husband's voice.
"About that… You think you can pick me up from the office? I don't know where Heeseung is, so I was wondering if-"
"I'll be there in a minute."
He interrupted you all of the sudden, making you smile warmly.
You waited a few minutes outside of the building, before seeing the characteristic car that was always parked in your house's driveway.
The windows lowered down, showing a Jay that was adjusting his blazer, unbuttoning his piece of clothing revealing his white shirt.
In your eyes, he looked handsome, like always, and you kept on wondering, how was it that you got married to such an attractive man. You forced yourself to get out of your mind maze, and then let your feet guide you to the car, straight up opening the door.
"Thanks for picking me up. Don't know what happened to Heeseung, he was supposed to be here." You murmured looking at your phone. "You don't need to thank me, I'm your husband after all, I'm supposed to take care of you." You shook your head in negation.
"You can't be taking care of me all the time. I can take care of myself." Jay squeezed your thigh and then proceeded to rub his hand against it, but you put your small hand on top of his and he took it as an opportunity to grab it and rub his thumb on the skin.
"I ordered some burgers, they come with cheeseballs if you were going to ask." He looks at you for a quick second before turning back to the street.
When you reached home, you got some comfy clothing and quickly sprinted into the kitchen to hunt down your food.
It wasn't surprising that Jay was there, he was taking out the plates from the pantry and he placed them on the aisle of the kitchen. You then sat on top of it, which was a common occurrence.
Jay turned back to the aisle to see you sitting on it. He liked the view, you were wearing his oversized t-shirt with a pair of shorts, it made you look cute, but he always thought you looked cute, he always thought you were beautiful.
"Alright, there's your food, young lady." He pointed at the plate. "Cheeseburger with extra cheese, french fries and with your favorite, cheeseballs."
"Thank you, young man." You bowed how you could with your position, but you then grabbed his hands and put them around your waist. "I should give you a kiss to repay you." You softly place your lips below his, all with the usual sweetness that you carried around with you.
"You should be careful, miss, or I will die from how cute you are." You felt your heart beat stronger than before, leaving a little blush in your cheeks. You turned away trying not to get disheartened.
Don't get too attached!
And when you and Jay acted as a couple, sometimes you wished that was your normal.
With that, the weeks passed and even though it seemed like you were newlywed, you soon turned one year of marriage, and obviously, Jay's family was already asking for a grandchild, his grandfather to be exact.
You visit often, with Jay or without him. You saw him as your own grandfather, he could be grumpy sometimes, but you quickly got why Jay was so sweet and caring towards you.
His grandfather was exactly the same.
You knew where he got it from.
"Shouldn't you be resting, papa?" You played your hands on his shoulders. "I have way too much energy to be in bed, darling."
"Shouldn't your husband be here with you, instead of you being here following me around." Jay chuckled, coming right to your side. "It's just that Y/N sneaks away from me, it doesn't mean that I don't want to be with her." Jay's fingers softly traced your neck, causing a shiver to run down your spine.
"She's so sneaky that she's cute at this point." You could feel his breath right at your neck, tingles spreading through your body. "So cute that you seem heavenly to me." A blush went across your cheeks and your ears. You looked at him right in the eyes, his gaze was penetrative but it shone when he saw you, like little sparkles that flew around his orbs.
"When are you two planning on giving me a grandchild?"
You felt a shock of electricity attack your heart, it hit so hard that it made your heart beat like crazy, and for Jay it wasn't any different.
"We are still not thinking about that, we are trying to enjoy what we have right now."
"Then enjoy it quickly, I'm pretty sure that you two will have a little one running around our family house in no time."
And with that, things became a little bit uncomfortable on the way back home, you both stayed quiet for a while.
That was until…
"Do you wish to have children, Belle?" The question took you out of your thoughts, but it didn't surprise you after what had happened but at the family house.
"I-I mean, if you don't want to have children it's fine, I'll be fine with whatever you want."
His words stroke your heart, he wasn't forcing you to have kids just for his family's sake. He was dealing to go with whatever you wanted to go with.
And that's what moved your heart.
"Jay… I do want children, it's just- we just got married, we just turned a year and maybe we just need more time just for us."
Jongseong nodded at your words, and his hand stroked your naked thigh, sometimes reaching the fabric of your dress, but with your finger you tickled his knuckles causing him to chuckle.
He pulled the car towards the sideway, the tigles that he provoked on your thighs were starting to go through your body, his hands moved from your thigh to the flesh of your neck, he softly shifted you towards him, being careful with your spine.
Jay's breath could be felt on top of your lips, he leaned closer finally closing the space between you, he moved his lips with a soft pace, until you fought with his to make the movement rougher and passionate. The butterflies that were accumulating inside your stomach were too much to bear, so parted your lips from his, just to move your legs in a way that you would be on top of him, both legs on his side.
After that, you kissed him again, your tasty lips being his temptation and his sweet dream. Jay's hand caressed your waist, making you fully sit down on top of him.
And with that you both started that night with a passionate fire.
Maybe something within you made things uncomfortable between the two of you, because after that, Jay started to realize that maybe you would never have a normal marriage, you both knew about it, but throughout this time, he just became more subconscious about the topic.
Your footsteps could be heard from downstairs, even though you were barefooted. A black blazer staring at you from the living room, resting at the sofa… Beside it were a few oversized sweatshirts that you wore all the time.
The smell of sweet honey and orange juice could be smelled around the house. Jay likes that smell, it was his second favorite, right after your scent and the taste of your lips, that cinnamon scent.
Even though he could feel the smell of his breakfast go through his nostrils, he was actually in a hurry, he'd actually been in a hurry since a month ago. You hadn't had the time to speak to him a lot like before and that saddened you, really deeply.
You heard the sound of his shoes through the stairs as you packed his lunch bag. It contained pancakes covered in honey and caramel, and his lunch, which was pasta salad.
Jay was already near the exit, with his bag already packed, so you sprinted with his lunch bag in your hands.
"Jay, here's your food." You said with a smile, but his face didn't express the same, it was as if he was bored, mad to say the least.
"Yeah, thanks." He grabbed the bag and opened the door in a hurry. "I'll see you at night." And with that, he left. You heard the sound of the car engine turning on, and then it drove through the streets.
"See you at night."
You whisper sounds depressive, it even caused you to feel dizzy.
He didn't even say goodbye, he didn't kiss your cheek as he always did… That's how it had been a few weeks ago.
And you wondered why you expected it to be different. You thought about that moment in the morning the whole day, even in the office, you couldn't stop thinking about it.
"Has Jay not answered your calls?" Your friend, Haewon was right behind you as you dialed your husband's number for the fourth time.
"No, he's being really busy these days." You rubbed your forehead in a little bit of stress. Recently, you felt really tired, dizzy, nauseous even. You knew that an upcoming deal with a foreign company was coming up, and you were stressed out, so that could be provoking your symptoms. "You've been busy and you still bother to call, you should talk to him. Didn't you say that he was really distant recently."
Actually, you were both distant, work had a lot to do, but also the fact that you couldn't take it anymore. Even when you acted like a couple, not being able to express the love you had for each other was a real deal breaker.
The days that you felt like telling him how much you missed him, you stayed away. The days he felt like telling you how beautiful you were, he looked away. The days where you felt like finally telling each other how much you loved the other, you both parted away.
You weren't ready to be fond of him, yet. Even though you already had strong feelings for him. What if something happened and you ended up heartbroken? You weren't a conventional couple, you were arranged married, and your fears were so big that you were incapable of getting too comfortable with him.
The sound of the telephone hanging was just the thing you needed. The way your mom called once again was not a surprise to you, but it was still tiring.
"How can you be so incompetent, so stupid?!"
"You are such a failure, I don't know how you still work here?"
"Such a high position in the company and you're still a fucking idiot!"
"You look really pale, Y/N. Do you need me to bring you something to eat, drink?" "Do you think you can bring me a peppermint lemonade, Haewonie?" She nodded as you muttered a 'thank you'.
The sound of your fingers touching the keyboard was enough to cause you a big headache. You knew you could continue at home, but things were too tense there for you to peacefully work at any space of the house.
"Here's your lemonade." "Thanks, Haewon." Your hand grabbed the lemonade, taking a quick sip, enjoying the flavor of sweet peppermint, but sour lemons.
"With Hanni and Isa we are going to a brand new restaurant that they opened last week. We heard that they have great caviar and side dishes. You should come with us, have a girl's night, get your mind free from work and from everything going on at home."
You thought about it, and it sounded really fun, but the least that you wanted was to go out and then remember that you had a lot of work to do.
"I would love to, but I have a lot of papers to check on, and I need to get everything ready for the next meeting. You know that I would go if I could." "Yeah, don't worry about it. I'll make sure that next time you are completely free so we can all be together."
You nodded, thanking her for being understanding.
By the end of the day, you drove your car towards your home, with eyes heavy and a tremendous nausea that was also brought to you with dizziness.
You pulled the car away from the road as you felt a curious vile rise up your throat wanting to escape your mouth.
The car door was flung open with desperation, your feet touched the grass as you felt the vile free itself out of your mouth and go straight into the natural floor.
You gagged as you felt how the remains of your food choked you. You felt as if the air was being cut out for you and that you would stop breathing at any moment.
As you finished, you let out a sharp breath and wiped your mouth with the end of your sleeve.
A few tears fell down your cheeks and blurred your view. The thought of sitting right beside your car became true, you let your legs rest on the ground and the back of your head felt the cold material of the vehicle.
It was such a weird feeling, you'd never thrown up before ever since you were eight years old. You started to analyze how your health had deteriorated a few weeks ago, you thought it was just a bug, or maybe it was just the huge amount of work that was causing problems on your body.
You kept on saying that you needed to rest and that you would do it, but that never happened and you always postponed it.
With the little strength that you had, you managed to get to your car and let your head fall against the driver seat. You felt a little bit relieved as you felt the nausea wave get out of your body.
It took you about fifteen minutes to take a turn back home. You drove back slowly, trying your best to prevent your stomach from getting upset.
When you reached home, you noticed that Jay's car wasn't there yet, which meant that he wasn't back home.
You felt your muscles relaxed as you felt the water coming from the shower fall into your shoulders. You got into a comfy pink sweater and a pair of shorts that made your skin fuzzy. And you combed your wet hair feeling a sudden pressure at the side of your head.
The fingertips of your hands applied some weight into your head trying to stop the possible migraine that was bothering your tired body.
You went through the night trying to distract yourself from the discomfort that you felt the whole day. Even let your phone ring a few times trying to call Jay, but he never actually answered.
You didn't feel that much appetite, so you avoided making dinner for yourself and just focused on your husband's.
But you waited for him to get home, and even though the time passed he still wasn't there with you. And that was maddening, because the only thing that you wanted was him to be there.
The clock was pointing at 11:46, and just by then Jongseong was arriving. The sound of the door closing woke you up, you had fallen asleep on the couch.
At least my headache's gone.
Jay noticed that the lights were on, he knew that you were waiting for him. He didn't want you to do that, you had enough at work and you needed to rest. At least, one of you had to be well-rested.
You rubbed your eyes in an attempt to draw the sleepiness away from your body. The numb feeling, soon running away from your limbs.
He reached the living room, the first thing he saw was your exhausted figure. Jay wondered why you were still awake… Did you wait for him?
"Hey, why are you still up?" Jay put his bag down beside one of the sofas.
Even the question was maddening. He was back at home so late and you waited for him even though you had been so distant.
"I was waiting for you to arrive."
Jay sighed with disappointment. "You shouldn't be waiting for me." He blurted out, which kind of confused you. "Why?"
He smirked in annoyance, he wasn't annoyed at you, or maybe he was.
Jay wanted you to admit that you loved him, just as much as you wanted him to do the same for you. He wanted to break the cycle of lies, he wanted to stop pretending that he didn't love you. Why did you both have to lie to each other?
Because it was so obvious that you couldn't tolerate it anymore.
"Y/N, why are you acting like you actually care about me?"
You furrowed your brows in confusion, also in annoyance… How could he say that? And why would he believe that?
Hadn't you shown how much you cared for him?! Wasn't all you had done for him enough?
You couldn't believe what he was saying.
"What are you saying? Have I actually not shown how much I care about you?!" You kept your voice at a normal level, you tried not to raise your voice, you tried your best to take the situation away from the worst. "Stop lying, Belle! We know that we are both liars in this situation!"
"And that's what maddens me, because we fake every single thing as if our marriage came out of a normal situation."
Your breath shrieked in despair, as your heart continued to crumble as if it was a piece of paper that you could ruin. Why are you doing this to me? That was the only thought that could go through your mind.
Tears threatened to escape your eyes, you looked to the side trying to prevent them from going any further.
Jay just stepped up closer to you, his own heart breaking as well, just as it was beating against his chest.
He was nervous...
He was scared.
All because he felt that things were falling apart.
"You said that you didn't want to get married to me if I didn't love you… But you are still here."
Jay's hand was placed on your chin, his whispers were enough to break you, to tear you apart in a million pieces.
"I asked you if you loved me… you said no, but you never asked if I loved you." You tried to hold in your sobs, but your shaky breaths betrayed you.
Something inside you was falling apart in rage. Where was all of this coming from?
Why was he telling you all of this? Why now?
"You've already proven me why I shouldn't have asked…" You spat your words in fury. "You are asking me if I actually care about you, but…"
"Have you ever actually cared about me?"
You grabbed his hand and slowly got it away from your chin. If you ever feared about being heartbroken, now you are more afraid about what would happen next instead of what would happen in the moment.
"Y/N." Just hearing your name slip out of his tongue shattered your heart into pieces. He was heartbroken as well, he was hurt and he was more than afraid, he was terrified.
He was disappointed with himself.
"Get your shit together, Jay."
The remainder of the night was tense, it was quiet and a little bit disturbing. Jay couldn't sleep, he knew that he'd messed up and he fully understood why you were mad at the moment.
He completely let himself go because of the hardship that he was feeling. Jay hated it, he despised that he knew that you loved him, but you wouldn't say, and he also despised the fact that he knew how much he loved you but he wouldn't say anything.
Was this how it was going to be forever?
Pretending that you didn't have feelings for the other just because you didn't want to get hurt. For some reason, that decision was the best that you could ever take, at least that's what you both thought.
Nobody will get hurt if something happens.
That's just bullshit!
As he wrecked his head with thoughts, you laid on the sofa, with a navy blue blanket covering your body. The least that you wanted was to sleep in the same bed as Jay, you didn't need that at the moment.
Throughout the night, you thought about your relationship with Jay. You've known each other ever since you were kids, and you love him with your whole heart, he made you feel things that you never thought that you could feel, the thought of marrying him was far from your mind, but when your families engaged you, something inside of you thought that you could make things work, you wanted a future with him, but at the same time you feared that loving him would break you at some point, all because it wasn't at your own will and it wasn't that you married at each other because of love.
The problem was, that if you kept up pretending you didn't love him, you would just hurt each other, and it was already happening.
You didn't notice at what time the morning came, your body shut down the moment that those thoughts hit your head. The sound of the air conditioner going off got to your senses, you pulled the blanket off your body, and your neck was stiffened from the uncomfortable position that you slept on.
The cold floor sent shivers down your spine as your feet made contact with the tiles, you got up, walking immediately towards the bathroom near the living room. You walked quickly trying your best to avoid Jay, but also trying your best to keep the vile that was rising up your throat.
You reached the bathroom, hitting your knees with the cold tiles as you threw up inside the bowl, something that you found impossible because your stomach was empty.
A huff escaped your mouth, you cleaned your lips with the back of your forearm, getting up with weak legs to walk towards the sink. A sudden but quick ring consumed your ears, and it left as fast as it came, your senses were altered, almost distressed.
You didn't understand a single thing of what was happening with your body, but your mind always came up with the same answer.
It's just stress, you thought, you brushed your teeth. Your limbs were wobbly, almost numb… But you still made your way to the kitchen after you finished washing your mouth.
The feeling that somebody was close to you, came in. Your heart leaped when you saw Jay in the kitchen, his almost tan skin came across your mind, he always had that scent every time he was close.
He always smelled elegant, luxurious, even mysterious sometimes.
It felt like a temptation being so close to him. And the way you sat on the counter chair was not helping, you bounced your barefoot leg as you looked at the material of the kitchen aisle, not wanting to look at him.
But still, you could feel the heat of his skin near you.
"Drink some water, you need to stay hydrated if you are losing fluids." He left a glass of water beside your arm, on the counter. You didn't even dare to look at him, but by the sound of the furniture moving, you could see what he was going to do. "Do you have a stomach bug or something? Have you gotten that chec-"
"I don't know why you're asking me this? I thought you didn't care." You raised your head to look at him, his sharp eyes looking into yours, making you want to look away.
"Y/N, I didn't mean to make you feel that way. You know that I do care about you." He said trying to get a hold of your arm, but you pulled away from him.
Deep down you knew that he did, he cared and he cared more than what he showed you, but you couldn't be like this anymore, continuing a lie that would only hurt the both of you.
"Something inside of me tells me that you do. But you are so distant, and we keep on lying to each other as if that is going to solve anything, and we both know that isn't doing anything anymore." Jay sat straight after hearing your words.
"Jay… I, Why do I keep feeling like this isn't working out?." Jay stood up from his seat, he was impressed with your words, words that he didn't want to hear. "W-What do you mean?"
"We are hurting each other and that's the least that I want, and I know you feel the same… But we are so blinded by each others' company that we haven't noticed that we truly aren't doing anything for our relationship, and that says a lot." "I thought that maybe we could make it work, but I feel like I'm in the wrong, here."
Were you saying that you wanted to be away from him? Was he truly hurting you that bad?
Jay's mind was completely wrecked, he clenched his jaw trying to keep away his tears, just as you… he wanted to make things work, because he truly did see a future by your side.
You were all he wanted.
He was all you wanted.
But if that was what you wished, then he wasn't going to say otherwise, because that's how much he loved you.
"Maybe you are right, maybe this isn't working out, because I really don't wanna hurt you and I know that you don't want to hurt me."
Your heart broke, because you truly weren't expecting him to agree with you, you wanted him to fight for you and finally tell you how much he loved you, but your mind knew that he was going to agree with you.
"Being together just feels wrong at this point."
"But what if we make it work out." He said hopeful. "I don't know, Jay."
Your heart hit your chest with intensity, you were still hoping that things would get better, but at that point it just felt something completely impossible.
To be clear, you had to continue with your day as if nothing happened, pretending that your relationship wasn't crumbling down and your heart wasn't shattered into a million pieces.
Heeseung kept looking at your saddened expression, knowing that you were down, and he kept an eye on you throughout the ride to the office.
He asked a few times if you were okay, but you always responded with a smile, repeating that you were fine.
Even Juni noticed your state, you felt numb and confused, if you truly loved someone how could you suggest such thing. Maybe it was because you simply couldn't tolerate the fact that you were being lied to.
In comparison to you, Jay was stressed. He didn't want things to go this way, you were everything that he dreamed of, and ever since he was a kid, he imagined a future with you. Yes, he was in a relationship with you, but it wasn't what he had always wished for.
He wanted to be one of the reasons you smiled, not one of the reasons why you hurt. Jay couldn't concentrate on his work, and he couldn't stop thinking about how hungry he was. Shit, he truly did miss your cooking!
You placed a foot on your doorstep and you felt the need to throw up, it was becoming a normal occurrence, it had happened twice at work, and that was the second time you did it at home ever since the morning.
The sink water was heavy for your stomach, but really cool and nice for your face, you washed it a few times, before finally heading out of the bathroom and getting into some comfier clothes.
It felt so nice when you got off your pleaded skirt and your white shirt, your tennis shoes were also a little bit tight, but you didn't pay that much attention to it.
Just when you were rising up your shorts, the bedroom door opened, revealing a tired Jay, trying to take off his tie. He turned his head to the right out of impression, feeling a little bit nervous .
Embarrassed, you quickly pulled your shorts up, lowering your head in a timid manner, before heading towards the door. "Sorry, I shouldn't even be ashamed, but this is very uncomfortable."
"Don't be sorry, I should've knocked." You brushed his fingers in reassurance. "None of us should be sorry, we've seen each other naked, anyways." You mentioned the last thing, in an attempt to make things better.
Jay looked in your way, just as you started to let go of your shyness. You noticed how his tie was hanging lower, and some of the buttons of his shirt were open, showing a little bit of his chest and the marks of his clavicles. He saw your black hair covering some parts of your arms, tank top that showed a slight part of your abdomen, and the cotton gray shorts that covered your thighs.
His skin looked beautiful with the dim warm light of your bedroom, and his fingers slightly brushed with your skin. You didn't notice that you were so close to him, how his gaze softened when he looked into your eyes and you noticed the little line at the middle of his lower lip, you always liked it, he had it since he was in high school.
Jay felt the blood rushed through his veins as he felt you closer to him. You could only think that if those were going to be the last days that you spent together as a "normal" couple, you should at least be able to feel his skin a few more times.
"Why do I keep feeling that this is wrong?" He murmured, as you got so close that you could feel his warmth breath. "At least, if I'm going to hurt while we are together, I wanna do it right." You whispered in his ear, looking at him once again. "I don't want you to hurt, Belle." His hand caressed your cheek, pretty fingers lingering on your skin. "But I want you to love my body, as if you just hurt me."
There had always been a difference between lust and love, even though you both didn't express the love for the other, you always felt a feeling of lust towards him, just like he did for you.
Maybe your relationship wasn't working out, but you felt a magnetic reaction towards him, something that made you look his way even if things were going wrong.
That was the lustful feeling that consumed your body.
"...At least just tonight, Jay." You whispered, knowing deep down that if you had sex with him that night, it would become a cycle until you finally came to a conclusion of what you wanted to do with your relationship. Your breath was hitched, as the air going through your lungs was heavy and slow. "You sure that's what you want?"
You felt his lips brush against your forehead, his palm making contact with your wrist.
"Yes."
His lips kissed your forehead, just for him to go down and focus on your neck, he gave tender kisses on that area of your skin, sometimes he sucked the points that he knew were sensitive.
You could only grab the ends of his hair as you felt those nice sensations, and how some of your senses started to blur a little.
Sometimes, your tummy felt butterflies flying around as he kept a hand on your neck, now paying full attention to the soft flesh of your lips, kissing them hard, leaving them red and kinda swollen.
You leaned on a wall, letting all of the feelings come to you, his kisses, how his hand was grabbing your neck, while the other kept itself on your waist.
Your tricky hands grabbed his tie, looking into his eyes knowing very well that his heart had just skipped a beat just like yours already did. You somehow undid his tie, throwing it to the side, and then proceeded to unbutton the rest of his shirt, leaving the top of his chest uncovered, his pretty skin glowing because of the beads of sweat.
"You are going to be the end of me, Belle." Jay whispered, kissing you once again, keeping his hand in your neck, as you placed yours on his shoulders, slowly taking his blazer off, letting it fall on the floor.
That night, you knew that this was going to be a common occurrence until one of you had to break off the relationship.
Because the morning after that, Jay offered to take you to your office, just for you to hook up in the car before he finally drove you off to your workplace.
When you arrived back home, you would both make out as if it was the last time that you would see the other.
You hurt most of the time, feeling that this was the most that you could have with, sexual intimacy just to compensate for the hurt that you felt, and the sadness that would consume you.
For the next few weeks, this was your new normal, you would both have a few words before you finally had intimacy. And clearly, to be honest, Jay's heart ached with sorrow, but also passion.
How was it that you could make your intimacy work, but not your relationship?
That's what he always wondered for the past few weeks.
A few days before your family reunion, you arrived home late, and you noticed that Jay was there already, his car parked on the sideway.
When you entered the house, you took off your shoes at the entrance. You brushed your hands with your skirt, because of how could it was outside, you threw up on your way back to your house, so the air had definitely affected a little bit of your body
Then, you heard it.
"I really don't want to get a divorce, but I feel like this isn't working out."
Jay wanted to say how much it hurt him that he could feel your body with every single touch, but not your heart.
"Y/N said she knew things weren't working out, and I know she's hurting because of me, and that's the opposite that I want for her."
"I want her to be happy and to not stick to a relationship that will only burn us down."
You didn't know what was worse, the fact that your relationship was now based on just sex, because you wanted a part of him to be with you, or was it the fact that Jay wanted you away from his life completely.
What hurt more was the fact that he mostly was doing it because of you, and you weren't going to beg for him to stay, because you knew that you needed to be apart.
"You want a divorce?"
Jay heard your fragile voice coming from the living room, he knew there was no turning back now.
He hung up the phone, surprised by you and your sorrowful expression.
"Y/N…"
"You don't have to say anything, I understand." You would be lying if you said that your heart wasn't shattered, and that there weren't tears slipping down your cheeks.
Until then, you would love your bodies, as if you had just hurt the other.
That's what you thought it would be.
Because you both just did.

synopsis / jay always said he'd marry you one day, until suddenly he breaks it off claiming he 'found someone else'. months later, on the day of his wedding, you find a letter slipped under the door of your apartment from none other than the groom to be himself.
author's note / dedicated to my jay obsessed best friend!
Tumblr media
“I’m going to marry you one day,” your boyfriend, Jay, said softly with a smile on his face as he shifted in his position lying down together with you on his bed to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear.
You and Jay have been together for almost two years, and it’s been nothing short of pure bliss. Sure, like any other couple, you two would have the occasional arguments — but rest assured Jay would come knocking on your door with a bouquet and stuffed toy in hand while he asks for your forgiveness.
You let out a light laugh before pressing your lips into a tight smile. “As if your parents would allow that,” you told him as-a-matter-of-factly.
Jay was rich, to put it short. His parents were CEOs of different companies that their parents before them passed down for multiple generations. You, on the other hand, lived a normal and comfortable life. But apparently, it didn’t seem to be enough.
After you met his parents, Jay assured you that they just put up a cold front. Both of you knew he was lying through his teeth.
Jay shook his head. “I don’t care about them. I only want you,” he said before pressing a kiss to your forehead.
A tear rolled down your face as you recalled this memory. It’s only been a year since that sweet exchange of words that you thought secured your relationship for good. You hate how you were wrong.
You let out a dry laugh. “I— I don’t get what you’re talking about. Was it something I did? Come on, Jay. We can talk this out,” you sounded desperate as you shook your head, tears threatening to fall down.
Jay shook his head silently. You thought you almost saw tears pooling around his eyes as well. But to even think that seemed delusional. He seemed so deadset.
“I told you, we just can’t be together anymore,” he still wouldn’t look up to meet your eyes.
“I know, you told me that. But why?”
“It’s not you, it’s me,”
“Don’t give me that bullshit, Jay,”
“We just can’t,”
“A reason. You owe me that much—”
“I found someone else,” he said with a tone so final, though the crack in his voice almost made him sound hesitant.
A silence filled the air.
You knew nothing lasted forever. A part of you knew that what you and Jay had going might have shattered one day.
But he always sounded so sure that you two were something permanent. Something written in the stars. So you pushed that part of pessimism in you to the back of your mind.
Now here he was, taking everything he said, the promises he made, the sweet nothings you shared, and twisting it all around. The part of you, the ugly voice that didn’t believe in the timelessness of the love you and Jay shared mocked you as it boomed with laughter and insults.
“Oh,” you breathed out.
A man in a black suit approached your table in the privately booked restaurant and tapped Jay’s shoulder.
“Sir, it’s time to go. You’re going to be late for your meeting with your parents,” the man hesitated as his stoic face held a hint of sympathy when he glanced at you.
“I’ll be right there,” Jay replied as he picked up the coat from behind his chair.
For the first time in this meeting you two had, he managed to look you in the eye before turning his gaze back downwards.
As he turned around and walked away, you mucked up the courage to ask him a question.
“Do you love her?” You asked, suddenly standing up.
Jay turned around and met your hurt gaze. His stone-cold expression melted slightly at this. He paused for a while taking in your presence with a look that almost seemed pained.
He nodded once his eyes traveled back to meet yours once more. “Yeah,” he breathed. “More than I can say,” he paused before turning back around and leaving.
It’s been five months since you and Jay broke up, and you’ve managed to stop breaking into tears at every reminder of him after the first three.
There was no contact between you two. And it was easier to keep him out of your thoughts that way. But that didn’t mean you stopped thinking about him. It was hard to do so.
You were scrolling through social media on your phone as you rode the elevator going up to your apartment. You exited the lift and got your keys ready with one hand while you kept your phone in the other.
You stopped in your tracks after seeing a headline on twitter.
‘Heir of Park Enterprises, Park Jongseong and daughter of the CEO of Hwang & Yoon Law Firm, Yoon Jiwon: Everyone’s Favorite Newlyweds!’
You took in a sharp breath. You’ve managed to steer clear of any news and media about the couple for a while until today. You pressed the power on your phone to turn it off before making your way to open your apartment door.
As you shut the door behind you, you noticed a cream colored envelope facing downwards with your name and address written on it.
You placed your work bag down before picking up what seemed to be a letter, sitting down on your couch and opening it.
As you unfolded the crisp paper, your eyes landed on the first few words. And you immediately knew who wrote it. The handwriting was one that you could recognize as easily as your own.
Y/n,
I’m writing this the night before my wedding. And you’re all that my thoughts consume. The day we fell in love, a part of me knew that you were the girl of my dreams. The girl I wanted to see once I walked up the stairs to an altar. And tomorrow, that girl isn’t you. I’ve thought about how we broke up, how I left you, every day since it happened five months and fourteen days ago. I never wanted to leave you. But when my parents first gave me the instruction to do so for them to be able to set me up with someone else, I showed apparent impertinence by not following their words, and they were angry with me. They told me that you were a bad influence. That the reason I kept disobeying them was you. So they told me that if I refused their instructions once more, they would’ve done something terrible to you and your family. I couldn’t risk it. I couldn’t hurt you like that, yet I still ended up causing you pain. I thought that if I said I found someone else and treated it like a normal falling out of love instead of saying the contents of the previous paragraphs, the hurt would last shorter. I proved myself wrong with that. It pained me either way. I hope you move on from me. You deserve better. You deserve someone who would protect you and your loved ones instead of giving up. I’m sorry I couldn’t be just that, and I should’ve. I question myself everyday why I wasn’t. As for me, I know I will never find someone as good as you. Everyone else will always fall short. A part of me has loved you since I first met you, and since then I’ve only fallen in deeper. You’ve consumed my heart and my soul. I love you, Y/n L/n. And I don’t think I’ll ever stop. By the time you read this, the ring meant to be yours settles on the hand of another. But it will never be truly hers. One day, I hope you can find it in you to forgive me for the hurt I’ve caused. Maybe in some other universe, I never would’ve had to leave.
Yours, Jay
You finished the letter with a hand clasped to your mouth in a failed attempt at stopping yourself from crying.
You thought the wound was just starting to scab only for it to turn raw once more.
Jay was right. Maybe in another universe.

genre: secretagents!au, lovers to strangers(?), suggestive, slight angst // warning: mentions of gunshots, blood, violence // wc: ~1.3k
summary: you were tasked to eliminate a target, which should be just another day in your life, but what were you supposed to do when said target was your ex-husband whom you had left months ago?
author’s note: I don't know if I should call this a drabble or a one-shot, but for now let's call it a short one-shot...
I know I did a poll and that I should be releasing bodyguard!jay first but Lord help me this particular scene just played in my mind and if I didn't get it out of my system I would be haunted by it in my dreams... which would be exhausting.
anyways if you have watched Salt before then you might notice some similarities. except I do like to think this one has an implied happy ending.
no song for inspiration for this one! I just hope you like it.

The sounds of gunshots and explosions were deafening to your ears, and the amount of dust and debris floating almost impaired your sight, but you pushed through, as you always do. You had one mission—to eliminate the target, so you slowly but steadily made your way up the crumbling apartment, hoping to locate your man soon.
You heard static in your ear, and you nudged the piece back in place, quickly putting your hand back on your gun. Your footsteps were silent, and the area soon quieted down too. You were slightly worried that the murmur of the radio would be noticeable, so you turned down the volume as you closed in.
With a slight tap, you pushed the front door slightly open, and you kept your movements to a minimum as you carefully entered the room. You heard the sound of clinking and rustling, like someone was in a rush to pack their stuff, so with a firm step you slammed the bedroom door open and pointed your gun to the source of the sound.
The man froze, letting go of his tools that were halfway on their way into his bag. At the sight of you, his hands fell to his side, and it bothered you how his face showed no fear. It was almost like he was glad to see you.
“Y/N,” he called you by your first name.
You frowned and strengthened the grip on your gun. He flinched slightly and raised his hands, only up to his chest. You did not know how long you both stared at each other until his eyes moved to your waist and widened at the sight.
“You’re bleeding,” he muttered.
You heard your handler’s voice calling for you through your earpiece, and you squinted your eyes at his demand. He was ordering you to retreat as soon as you killed the doctor in front of you, and you were seriously considering it for a second. But then you started to feel your blood seeping through your top, and you were getting a little lightheaded—maybe from your wound, from the intense running, or from running into your ex-husband.
“One second,” you whispered.
Jay wasn’t sure if you were talking to him or the earpiece. You shifted your aim only slightly to the right before firing your gun, missing Jay’s ear by several inches and hitting the wall behind him. Jay barely flinched, he only blinked as he felt the short gush of wind go past his face.
You collapsed to the floor as you pulled your earpiece off, kneeling on the ground and smashing the device with your fist to effectively destroy it. Your gun slid off your hands and at that exact moment, Jay rushed to his feet to catch you in his arms.
“Y/N…”
Your vision became blurry as you tried your best to muster the last words coming out of your mouth before you lost consciousness.
“Don’t call me that.”
---
You woke up in a room that was lit with a warm shade of light, its walls painted dark green and the furniture in it a complementary shade of copper. You moved your right arm and immediately winced, feeling a sharp sting on your waist. When you looked down, you found yourself bandaged and your top had changed into a loose shirt.
The door swung open and Jay entered, holding your sling but without your gun in it.
“I found this,” he said, showing you the tracker on the wider side of the strap. “What do you want me to do with it?”
You felt like he already knew what your answer would be, but you replied anyway.
“Get rid of it,” you breathed. Jay calmly ripped the tracker off and crushed it with the heaviest book on his shelf before chucking it in the trash.
“Why didn’t you kill me?”
You frowned at the sudden question. You always knew that Jay was straightforward, but you didn’t expect him to directly ask you about your business, especially when you were clearly still in pain.
“That was what you came for, right?” Jay asked again. “I was the only doctor in the building. They want me gone. Am I wrong?”
“Stop,” you whispered, bringing your hand up to your temple. For some reason, you were starting to get a headache. “Not now.”
“Then when?” Jay stepped away from the desk, initially having his back towards you. He was now looking at you and standing by the side of the bed. The bed that you used to share.
“I just said not now,” you repeated yourself.
“It has to be now,” Jay continued. “Because if I wait until you get better, you will leave. Again.”
You were quick enough to turn your head away to not let Jay see the single tear trickling down your face. You took a deep breath and licked your lips before you spoke.
“It’s nothing personal, Jay. It’s just work.”
Jay scoffed and stepped away, walking towards the windows to make sure the blinds were closed. He had disabled your tracker long before you told him to destroy it, so he didn’t have to worry about being spotted by whoever was hiring you to do your job. Regardless, he had to ensure that nobody was around and that you were completely safe.
He wanted you to be. He couldn’t care less about his own safety.
“They told me not to fall in love.”
Jay turned his head towards you at the sound of your voice. “Pardon?”
“When they briefed me,” you continued. “I remember when they gave me your file. And when I reported back to them months later.”
Jay stood in silence as he listened to you.
“‘You were supposed to recruit him, not fall in love,’ they said,” you spoke in a hushed voice. You looked up at him and your eyes met.
“But how could I not?”
Your lips trembled as you tried to hold back your tears, and what Jay did next just made you fall apart.
He cradled your face in his chest, pulling your body only slightly towards him as he tried to comfort you. You grabbed his arm as you sobbed, tears staining his button-down. He gently placed his hand over your covered wound, making sure you weren’t putting unnecessary pressure on it, and it made you cry even more.
“It’s okay,” Jay muttered. “You’re safe here with me.”
You shook your head, still pressed towards his chest. “I might be, but you’re not.”
“Enough with the excuses, Y/N.” Jay pulled back, bringing one hand to cup your face. “I’ve told you I’ll go wherever you will go. Be it safe or not.”
“That’s a dumb decision,” you replied. Jay chuckled softly.
“People make dumb decisions when they’re in love,” Jay stated. He swiped his thumb across your cheek in an attempt to dry your tears.
“It’s not going to be easy,” you said in between your sobs. “We will have to relocate every month. There has to be surveillance at all times.”
“I’ll take it.”
“I will be a burden to you, Jay.”
Jay shook his head, clasping his hands over yours and bringing it to his mouth. He kissed your knuckles before shaking his head again, tears also threatening to fall down his face.
“You were never a burden to me,” he spoke against your skin. “You never will be.”
You started sobbing again and Jay made shushing noises as he pressed his forehead against yours. He began stroking your hair steadily, alternating between caressing your face and your shoulders too, and once he noticed that your breathing had leveled, he placed a finger under your chin.
“I belong to you, no matter what,” he said before kissing your lips.
When you felt the heat rush against your lips, you were reminded of how it was easy to be with him, how passionate it was to make love to him, and how regretful you felt on the day you decided to leave him. For loving Jay was like flying through a free fall—thrilling, fast, and intoxicating—and you could only pray that you’ll land safely, hopefully in his arms.

jay was never the type for birthdays. his excitement dwindled down for each year that swung on by. usually, he’d just buy himself a mini cake or a dozen donuts from krispy kreme as a minor celebration but with you around this time, it seems his plans of another uneventful birthday had gone down the shitter.
since the first day of april, it was the nonstop tormenting of asking what he’d like to do for his birthday, what did he like to eat? did he want any gifts? you were so curious to know but was left with witty responses, simply shrugging off the idea of a plan.
but today was the day. his birthday. waking up this morning, jay expected an empty bedside. you had work and jay demanded various times for you not to take the day off. his eyes are barely open, sighing as he pats all around his bed, searching for his phone in hopes of sending you a good morning text.
however, though it’s never a major occurrence, there are a few things that jay didn’t expect this morning. one: to be burned by a liquid sitting on his vanity that causes him to seethe, “fuck,” he whispers to himself, sitting up from bed rather quickly. two: to see a note in your handwriting, ‘for when you wake up <3 let’s enjoy your day.’ three: a tray filled with breakfast items that were still suspiciously warm.
and last but certainly not least, four: you slipping in the bedroom, with a cake in hand.
he’s truly attempting to collect his thoughts, even blinking to make sure he wasn’t seeing things, “what’re you doing here?”
“it’s your birthday…?” you scoff, tilting your head as if the answer was obvious, “why else would i be here?”
he scratches his scalp, brain still foggy from the early morning, “what happened to work?”
“i requested the day off.”
“…i thought i told you not to do that.”
you roll your eyes, hoping for him to be better spirited rather than acting like the grinch. you ignore his statement, standing closer to the edge of the bed, “make a wish and blow out your candles.”
“i’m not five,” his face scrunches.
“do it.”
“you can’t be serious…”
you look at him, furrowing your brows as you hold the cake up. oh my god, you’re being serious. he huffs, succumbing to your command. aiding in holding the dessert up, his lips form into an ‘o’ but you cover his mouth.
“make a wish first.” why? he almost dares to ask but sees the threatening look in your eyes, giving up in retaliation.
“oh my god, i hate you,” he closes his eyes for a few seconds, making a wish just like you asked.
“now blow.”
and he does, earning a light ‘yay’ from you.
“good boy,” you grin, squeezing his cheek, ignoring the fact he pushes your hand away, “see? that wasn’t so hard. what’d you wish for?” you set the cake beside the tray, crawling over him to lay on your side of the bed.
“for you to kiss my ass,” he answers swiftly.
he was hopeless but you stuck by his side nevertheless. rolling your eyes, you point at the food tray, “eat your food.”
“are you my mom?”
you pinch his thigh, ignoring the hiss he makes, “i made it for you! eat it.”
“jesus christ,” he pulls the tray from the vanity, settling it over his lap.
the first item he reached for was the bacon. with one delicious bite, leads to multiple, jay silently eating the entirety of the dish you make.
he may complain about your actions and what you say but moments like these where he basks in what you’ve done for him, he understands why he wants to be with you.
“good?” you tilt your head, eyes focusing on him drinking the coffee.
jay hums, setting the tray back on the vanity. he turns, hand cupping your cheek, thumb pacing back and forth on the skin, “thank you,” he mouths, initially settling for a small peck but couldn’t help the movement his lips made against yours.
it’s warm and smooth — just like the coffee you made. it’s difficult to not smile against his scarred lip, straddling his lap when he pulls you closer to him. it’s unfortunate, but jay takes a breath, bowing his head to rest it against your chest. you coarse your fingers through his hair, kissing the middle of his scalp, “happy birthday, jay.”
“thank you, sweetheart… i mean it.”

7 years old
As a child your imagination always got the better of you. One day you were a pirate sailing the seas hunting for treasure and the next you were a race car driver with millions of fans. You were never at it alone though. You always had him by your side no matter what the adventure was. "Jay!" You yelled knocking on the front door of his house.
For a 7-year-old you sure had a loud voice. When the door opened you smiled looking up at the older woman. Ms. Lee the woman who claimed you as her daughter and who knew you well enough to know you had something up your sleeve, especially for a beautiful day like this.
You saluted the woman before speaking in a military voice. "Good Morning Ms. Lee Space Cadet Y/N reporting for duty!" You saluted to the older woman who chuckled at you. You giggled before trying to peer around her to see if you could see Jay but sadly you couldn't.
You looked up at Ms. Lee and smiled. "Can Jay come out and play?" You asked with your best smile. She smiled nodding as she called Jay's name telling him you were outside waiting for him. He appeared a second later rushing outside to greet you.
You pulled the boy into a hug as he hugged you back. "Are you ready for our space adventure!" You yelled handing him his walkie-talkie as he nodded. Off the two of you went into the great unknown or the neighborhood to be precise. Though it didn't matter if you two were exploring the cosmos, climbing Mount Everest, or deep diving into the ocean as long as you were together that's all that mattered.
12 years old
You were devastated when you heard the news that you couldn't go outside and hang out with the other kids. You didn't like that you were stuck inside because inside meant time away from doing what you loved and the people you loved to hang out with. You also didn't like the pain settling in the lower part of your abdomen. The pain came and went.
The pain started early in the morning which led to a dark red spot being discovered in your bed. Your mom was right by your side telling you that it was normal for girls your age to go through something like this which scared you. You weren't prepared for what your mom called a period.
Though your mom tried to help you better understand what was going on with your body you didn't want to hear any of it. The pains were unbearable. How could anyone put so much misery onto a 12-year-old?! You lay in bed holding your stomach.
You didn't bother to wrap your ponytail up with a scarf as you suffered. A cup of water and an empty package of ibuprofen lay on your side table. You couldn't help as the tears fell. The pain felt like it was getting worse with each passing second.
You wondered how your mom and all the women in your life with through this each month. The ibuprofen had yet to kick in as you continued to cry softly through it. The sound of your mom calling your name makes you sniffle and turn to face the door as it opened. Instead of your mom, it was Jay who wore a sad smile on his face as he held a bag which you could only presume was snacks.
He sat down beside you and handed you the bag which was filled with your favorites as you gave him a small smile before hugging him tightly. "My mom helped me pick out things that would make you feel better. Or at least make you happy." He said watching as you pulled out your favorite candy and a bear with the words get better written on its stomach.
That's when your tears started up again as you clutched the bear to your chest. Jay had a scared look on his face thinking he did something to upset you. You pulled him into another hug as you thanked him not only for being here with you but for making you feel a little less alone during the whole thing. "You're the bestest friend ever." You spoke into his neck as his cheeks burned a bright pink color as he hugged you back just as tightly.
14 years old
No one told you your teenage years would be filled with nothing but stress and anxiety. No one believed that you were going through something even as you wore that all-too-familiar smile on your face. No one saw the actual frown behind the smile. People thought you were perfectly fine and happy as you should be. No one bothered to look for the real emotions. It seemed now that you were a teenager you and your parent's relationship just wasn't the same.
To them, it seemed lately like you weren't doing what they asked of you even though you were. They would chastise you for every little thing you did. Not washing the dishes, not cleaning your room, not waking up early for school.
It was the little things like that that caused you so much stress and made you want to leave the place you called home. But where could you go? Sure the neighborhood you lived in was small and everyone knew everyone but you knew no one you could fully just go to and stay with unless you wanted your parents called.
That night you and your mom had gotten into an argument about your grades slipping. Words were tossed and not meant to be said. You sat in your room with nothing but silence in the air as you contemplated. That's the moment you knew you couldn't stay here at least not for the night. You grabbed your bag and exited through your window making sure to close it behind you as you went.
The soft taps against the window woke the boy who had been asleep in his bed. He didn't hesitate to peer out the side of the curtain trying to catch a glance at who it was. He only sighed in relief when he saw it was you. But he kind of felt his heartbreak when he noticed that you were crying.
He didn't hesitate to let you in. You sat on his bed with your knees tucked under your chin as you sighed peering around the dark room before at him. He sat up against the headboard waiting for you to explain what happened. "I just needed to get out of there. You know I'm just sick of the arguments over little things." You spoke as he listened.
He couldn't understand what you were going through but he knew all too well that you being here meant that it happened way too often. He sighed scooting next to you and pulling you into his side as you laid your head on his shoulder.
"C-can I stay here....just for the night?" You asked as he nodded. No words were said as you lay beside each other taking in the silence. The next morning his mom wasn't surprised to find you two snuggling in his bed after learning that you had run away from home. Your mom was called and you were taken back home. Before you left you hugged Jay. "Thank you." You whispered pressing a kiss to his cheek.
16 years old
High school was a new path for you and what some people called the big leagues. You never could understand what they meant by that until you got there. High school was filled with differences and changes. You had grown into your new body quite well so to say which of course attracted the attention of the male audience.
And you made friends with a lot of different people. You could say you were popular or well-liked but that's the one thing you didn't understand. Why were you so liked? Was it because of the way you carried yourself, how you looked, or just because of what you had? You never understood it nor did you care about it.
High school was also the time when past relationships had started to somewhat diminish. You never did spend as much time with your old friends as you did with your new friends not that you noticed. You were a teen who was just doing what normal teens do hanging out, getting into trouble, the normal teen things. But it wasn't just you who was distancing themselves and becoming a different person.
While you were making friends, partying, and doing bad things your best friend was doing the same it was just normal teen things but it was different especially when you guys weren't doing it together.
You guys weren't your seven-year-old selves who stuck together through thick and thin anymore. You guys were 16 years old and have different crowds and cliques that you were in and sometimes that just meant that separation would be involved. You know the saying old friends come and go.
In high school, it was also the start of your dating which was quite new to you. Though you did get the male audience's attention very easily it was kind of hard to find the right person because most of the time they only wanted you because of what you had. So when you were asked on a date by this junior you didn't hesitate to agree. This junior carried himself well, had good grades, was a gentleman, and was an athlete, anything that was near close to perfection was something that interested you.
But sometimes the perfect image can be blurred. Was it your fault that he didn't show up? You felt like it was. What did you do to make him not show up? You dressed up pretty. You were dressed in a black and blue overall dress with your white air forces. Your hair flowing down your back. The wind blowing past you makes you shiver. Peering down at your feet you could feel the tears start to well up in your eyes.
The whole thing left a sour taste in your mouth. You stood outside your house feeling like such a loser. The date was a waste of your energy and your mom wasn't even awake to help you through it.
You peered across the street at the house adjacent to yours before sighing. The knocks against the window tore the boy's gaze from the textbook in front of him. He looked confusingly before peering out the window and seeing you with almost bloodshot eyes.
He opened the window helping you through. He only noticed your attire when you were standing by his desk arms wrapped around yourself. He had wondered what you were doing out so late. "I-i-." You couldn't even finish your sentence before you broke down in tears.
Jay didn't wait a single moment before pulling you into his embrace. You cried on his shoulder as he held you. Though he didn't know what had happened he knew one thing and that was to make sure you were ok before you told him anything. He held as you cried and even as your sobs turned to soft whimpers.
"D-dating sucks." You mumbled as he chuckled still rubbing your back. "Maybe you're right but you can't let one date mess that up for you." He stated as you sighed looking over at him and his adorable smile. Maybe he was right? From the smile on his face, you knew he knew that he was right.
"You are a dork, you know that right?" You ask as he smiled nodding. "Well, this dork is your best friend." He replied pulling you into a tight hug as you laughed.
18 years old
Your senior year in high school was nothing like you imagined it to be. The past three years at this high school were filled with fun times, new friends, old friends, stress, and anxiety but those years don't compare to the one now. The last year of high school before you become an adult.
An adult who has struggles upon struggles with work, paying bills, and doing things that most people aren't too thrilled about doing. You weren't gonna pretend like people didn't tell you that adult life was going to be hard, especially for someone who just got out from being a teenager in high school and fully stepping into adulthood.
But for right now you were just content living your best remaining high school life. Everyone around you was buzzing about prom and graduation. You were so focused on trying to get your grades up to be able to graduate that you forgot all about prom.
Prom a time where all the cares in the world were taken away. A night where you got to spend time with your friends laughing, drinking, partying, and doing whatever it is you do after-prom. Though you don't know much about what you were going to do about prom especially since you spent all your time focused on just getting out of the place that had caused you so much suffering and anxiety.
You listened to your friends talk, talk, and talk about prom and what they will be wearing and who they would be going with while you just sat there silent. What could you say?! You didn't have anything prepared for prom which was five days from now. Maybe you just wouldn't go.
But you knew everyone would want you to go especially since you skipped out on the one in junior year. Maybe disappointing them would be OK? Who are you kidding they were your friends and you knew they would be upset if you didn't show up. You sighed questioning how are you supposed to find a dress, get your hair and nails done, and find a date within five days.
With a huff, you sat on the couch of your living room opening your textbook. Jay sat beside his glasses on and eyes peering at you. "What's wrong with you?" He asked as you sent him a glare. Why did he think something was wrong with you just because you huffed and groaned? Ok, maybe something was wrong with you? "Are you going to prom?" You ask as he gave you a confused look before shrugging.
You turned your body to face him. "Because if you aren't maybe we can go watch a movie or hang out." You spoke. He shrugged yet again before raising his eyebrow in somewhat amusement and confusion. "Wait you don't want to go to prom?" He asked somewhat surprised. Like he couldn't believe that you out of everyone didn't want to go.
"I mean it's already too late to get everything ready for it. Like I have only 4 days to get my hair and nails done, find a dress, and don't get me started on a date." You groaned slouching in your seat. He just shook his head and rolled his eyes. He thought you were blowing the whole thing out of proportion. It was just a dance.
"Look if you don't find a date within the next 4 days then I'll go with you and we can embarrass ourselves to meet's end, ok?" He spoke as you turned to look at him. Was he agreeing to be your +1 if you didn't find a date? You found it cute as you hugged him as he tried his best to get away from your grasp.
At school, everyone went about their usual routines as did yourself. Well, some did. You stood at your locker in surprise as the words 'Will you go to prom with me?" were glued to it. You looked around trying to spot the person who did it only to stop looking when a boy you had only seen a few times around school stood in front of you with a bouquet of roses. Your mouth agape as your hands clenched your textbooks tight to your chest.
Maybe it was the fact that he asked you the question in front of what seemed to be the whole school that caused you nervousness. As gently as you could you let him down. You could see the sadness make his way up on his face as he was comforted by what you could only presume were his friends.
What had caused you to reject his offer? Maybe it was the fact that you didn't know him that well or the fact that you wanted to go to prom with Jay? You didn't know. Your friends came up to ask questions which you tried your best to answer and not let them know too much.
For the remainder of the day, you tried avoiding anyone you knew had a crush on you or tried to ask you out before because you knew that they would at least try to ask you to prom which you would reject. Prom was still approaching fast and you still had things to be done like finding a dress and getting your hair done.
Your nails were finished and ready to go. To say your mom was more excited than you for prom would be an understatement because it was clear she was thrilled about it. It was like she didn't go to her prom. She wanted to be a big help so she scheduled you a hair appointment with her friend which you were thankful for.
At the end of the appointment, you stood staring at yourself in the mirror. Your hair was a 26-inch body wave in the color black. You were now one step closer before your whole prom situation would be settled.
Dress shopping wasn't something you thought would be hard. But boy were you wrong. You and your mom have been in the dress shop for quite some time approximately three hours to be exact and yet you still haven't found the dress. Just when you thought everything was going well there was a problem. There wasn't a dress that you knew you would like to wear to prom.
Maybe you should've done your shopping and prepared for prom earlier because maybe you would've had your dress by now? Just as you were about to give up your mom came around the corner with the silk blue bodycon mermaid dress.
To you the dress was perfect. You didn't need a really big puffy dress to live your best life at prom. You just needed something you would look good in and feel comfortable in. The day had arrived prom was here and you were nervous. Why were you nervous oh because you didn't think you would look good.
But the moment you opened the door Jay's mouth dropped. What could he say? That you looked beautiful but that would be an overstatement because you looked beautiful every day. But at this moment and point in time, you looked gorgeous to him. You smiled at him taking in his appearance. You thought he looked handsome in a tuxedo.
Though the moment was short-lived as your guy's parents wanted to take photos of you two. After what seemed like an eternity of taking pictures you guys finally went off to prom. As you guys entered the building everything was in full swing already. People were laughing and drinking. You both excused yourselves to go talk amongst your friend group.
Your friends were so happy to see you there as they complimented you for how you looked and also scolded you for not telling them that you were coming with Jay out of everyone. For about an hour or so you stuck with your friend group chatting and dancing on the dance floor. When a slow song started to play you were about to exit the dance floor when your friends pushed you toward where Jay stood.
You glared at them before walking over to the boy. You nudged his shoulder with yours before grabbing his hand and pulling him onto the dance floor with you. His arms looped around your waist as you rest your arms over his shoulders. It was silent and awkward between you two as you danced.
"Thanks for coming with me. I would've been at home watching movies if it weren't for you." You spoke as he chuckled making you look up at him. "Watching movies probably not but making sure you graduate I could see." He spoke chuckling as you laughed alongside him.
You shook your head just staring at him. At times like this, you were glad to have someone like him in your life. You sighed laying your head on his chest as he continued to dance with you. The night soon came to an end and Jay had driven you home. He walked with you to the front door probably just trying to be a gentleman and wait for you to get into the house safe and sound.
You turned to face him as he wrapped his arms around you and hugged you. You sighed hugging the boy back. You pulled back kissing his cheek softly before entering the house and shutting the door behind you. Jay stood on the other side smiling and holding his cheek before returning to his home.
Prom was a success and now all you had to do was graduate. Graduation had come faster than anyone could ever imagine. You're about to walk across the stage and become a full-fledged adult. What was waiting on the other side of the stage for you was something you never imagined. The moment your name was called you felt like you had achieved your life goal. You have never felt happier in your life. You knew once your name was called you were officially not a high school student anymore. You couldn't believe it.
As you walked across the stage you can hear the cheers from your family members and friends. They were proud of you. Most importantly you were proud of yourself for making it as far as you did to be able to graduate. You received your high school diploma with the biggest smile on your face as your family took photos to celebrate and remember the biggest moment in your life.
You shook hands with your teachers who taught you so much in the past four years of your life. You knew you had made them proud. When you stepped off that stage you felt it. You were an adult now. Though the responsibilities could wait a little while longer.
Once everyone's names were called everyone threw their caps in celebration as they had finally made it out of high school. Your family was the first to congratulate you and greet you. You smiled at them thanking them for being here with you and encouraging you to keep going.
The moment you saw Jay you rushed into his arms hugging him tightly. You both did it. You graduated. Both of you went from kids who knew nothing about the big wide world to adults who would do great things in the world. Pulling back from the hug you wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed him.
The boy who was with you through everything from childhood to teenager and now to adulthood. He pulled back from the kiss and smiled as you did the same. You knew he was the one you wanted to experience every little thing with. You were his and he was your everything.

Lift up your head, what is this makeup? Put down your hand, did you cry again? How many times do I have to tell you, he’s not the one
It took several knocks for you to finally open the door. Jay noticed the strands of hair covering your face, and in an instant, he knew you must have been crying again. Before entering the house, he scraped his feet on the mat and pushed the door shut.
“What happened?”
There were books all over the place. Fallen stuff, a messy bed. Even the dog food was spilled. The most clueless person would know that a fight had happened there.
You sat down on the floor, leaning your back on your bed. You looked like you felt awful. Jay knew better than to just ask you a series of questions, so he walked up to you, sat down, and rested his head on your shoulder. It seemed that you got irritated with the sound of his breath because you started chuckling and then covering his mouth before ruffling his head.
If I could give her a tighter hug, I would, Jay thought to himself.
---
After you started dating him, have you ever thought you were happy? How special does he treat you? You are only a decoration to him He doesn’t even care about your feelings, your scars and your dreams
When you started tidying up, Jay decided to get out of your way. It had been a habit, almost. Ever since you started being roommates, he noticed that cleaning and tidying were activities that were somewhat therapeutic for you. Watching you walk from one edge of the room to another, picking up stuff, Jay walked towards the kitchen.
“Hey, feeling better?” Jay asked as you finally appeared.
You gave him a warm smile and then a hug. Jay hoped it would make you feel as good as he did.
“I’m sorry for ignoring you. You must be hungry.”
You reached onto the top counter and Jay just sat there, observing. You were not the best cook, but you knew how to make a decent meal. While you were preparing the ingredients, Jay purposefully knocked over stuff and made a huge mess, so that you would pay attention to him. It sounded a little pathetic, but he really needed to see another smile on your face.
“Oops,” Jay said under his breath, as he knocked down a box of cherry tomatoes.
You looked over and frowned. Before you could pick the tomatoes up, he nudged you and you both got into a friendly wrestle. You were laughing and at times Jay couldn’t stop making funny noises either.
Jay sat by the counter as you looked him in the eyes, again ruffling his head. You didn’t say anything, but your eyes sparkled with gratitude. You planted a kiss on his forehead.
---
You’re too good for a guy like that You’re too beautiful to be crying every day You need to be loved, you have that right A guy who’ll treat you special, he’s here right now
Jay was sitting by the nook when Heeseung came in, calling for you. Jay didn’t turn around, but he heard your steps walking to the door and when he did look in your direction, you were wrapped in Heeseung’s embrace. He had no chance to look away because Heeseung’s eyes caught his.
“Hey, man, how are you doing?”
Heeseung walked up to Jay and raised his hand up for a high five. Jay was already filled with loathe, knowing what the man in front of him had done to you, so he didn’t respond. Heeseung immediately took offense.
“The hell is your problem?” He raised his voice and you came rushing towards the two of them.
“Heeseung, leave him alone,” you said calmly, dragging Heeseung away from Jay.
As you both left the house, Jay sat back on the nook, with a fidget toy in his hand, staring outside the window.
---
Even though you’re hurting, you keep going back to the first place You’re not a fool, so it makes me mad If he makes you cry one more time I don’t know what I will do, I won’t hold back
Having to juggle two part time jobs at once made the house very quiet. Usually, you and Jay would spend time together watching movies, or cooking in the kitchen, basically just fooling around, but lately you had been very busy.
The sound of the front door opening woke Jay up from his nap. He was at the other side of the room. He took a few steps forward to check if it was you, but as he predicted, it was Heeseung. He would usually let himself in whenever you are not around, and just wait here until you come home.
Tonight, however, was different.
Jay had no intention of getting into a fight, and he couldn’t see clearly, but there was another girl with him. He knew it wasn’t you.
This was when the dilemma kicked in. On one hand, Jay felt like he was obligated to let you know. But how? How can he possibly tell you? While contemplating on what to do, the front door opened again. Heeseung and the other girl were making out on the couch when you walked in on them. At least this way, Jay didn’t have to figure out how to let you down easy.
The other girl quickly left, and you and Heeseung started screaming words at each other. It was killing Jay not to show up and just teach that asshole a lesson. After hearing a glass shatter, the front door slammed shut.
Jay walked out of the other room and saw you on the floor, sobbing. It had happened way too many times by now, that the sight of it doesn’t confuse him anymore. But it hurts the same.
“Y/N,” Jay whispered as he walked towards you. He stopped by your side but didn’t touch you.
Jay looked around and noticed his fidget toy sitting on the end table. You had your head on your knees, legs pulled close to your chest, and your fingers were trembling. Jay sat next to you, put the fidget toy in your hand, and let you cry.
As soon as you felt the warmth of Jay’s body beside you, you reached out and hugged him. Jay let himself get soaked with the tears of the only girl he loved.
---
You’re pretty enough You’re too beautiful to be getting hurt and crying I’ll help you escape from him I’ll make those tears dry from your beautiful eyes
You fell asleep on the floor, and you didn’t even bother to get up and get proper rest. Jay did not have the heart to leave you there, but he couldn’t just pick you up, so he stayed by your side.
As morning came, you woke up with a blanket covering her, and you noticed Jay already awake, sitting in front of her.
“You need some fresh air,” said Jay.
You did not reply. You sat up and picked up the blanket. Jay reached towards your coat that was hanging on the chair behind him, and he brought it over to her.
“Let’s go. Walk with me?”
You took a deep breath as you let Jay help you stand up. You both walked past the huge standing mirror.
You stopped to put on your coat and fix your hair, and Jay stood beside you, looking at his reflection in the mirror.
His wagging tail.
His droopy ears.
His golden fur.
“You’re such a good boy,” you finally spoke, reaching down towards your dog and giving him a kiss on his head. “Let’s go, Jay.”

Pairing : FWB!Park Jongseong x F!Reader ft. Sim JaeyunTW : asshole Jay ; fighting ; angst ; fluff ; Jake is here too ; Word Count : 3.3k
The sun had just barely risen, the top not yet even fully peaking over the top of the buildings that you could see from your bedroom window. It was rare for you to be awake at this time, and you had wanted nothing more than to sleep for a few more hours, to bask in the warmth and softness of your bed.
Nothing ever quite went as planned though, and the shifting of your bed and the soft grunt coming from beside you had stirred you out of your very peaceful and much needed slumber. “You’re leaving already?” You murmured tiredly, rolling over to watch him as he pulled his shirt on, his hair unruly and sticking up in all places as he stood up. “It’s Saturday, you don’t have to leave early…”
He always left, and you tried to tell yourself that you were okay with it, but you found it harder and harder to keep going along with how things were. “I don’t want anyone to see me leaving.” He whispered, seemingly not even wanting to risk your neighbors simply hearing that he was there. “I’ll text you later.” Is what he said, what he always said on his way out, although later usually meant when he just wanted to hook up again.
“Yeah… Alright…” You breathed out the words, not wanting him to hear that you were upset, but you knew that even if he did hear it in your voice, he wouldn’t care. You were simply there for his amusement, a toy to be played with and shoved aside when he got bored, and you had allowed yourself to be that for him. “Can you at least lock the door when you leave, I’m going back to bed…”
He nodded quickly, and you stayed awake long enough to watch him leave, listening for the latch of the lock that never came, forcing you to roll out of bed yourself and hurry to the front door. He didn’t lock it, because just as you already knew, he didn’t care enough to lock it. He didn’t care about you.
It was pretty pathetic, even you could admit it to yourself at this point, how much you waited around for him. You didn’t go out with friends, you didn’t really do much of anything other than working, always waiting and hoping that a call or a text would come in from him saying that he wanted to meet up. What was even more pathetic was how infatuated you were with him, knowing that it was a one way road and you were the only one going down it.
You were well aware that he didn’t want a relationship, but the foolish part of you held out hope that one day he’d realize that he loved you as much as you loved him. It wouldn’t be entirely unlikely, you had known a lot of people that were in relationships that started out the same way you and Jay were right now. Maybe he was just taking a little longer…
So you waited, and you waited… And that text that he said he’d send you later never came. He never called and he never showed up, and while you wanted to text him to make sure he was okay, you were well aware that he was just fine, he had posted pictures on Instagram and uploaded stories, he just didn’t want to talk to you. It hurt, but it wasn’t unexpected, it wasn’t the first time he had done this to you, it was just the last time you’d sit around and wait for him.
It was the weekend, and most of the time you’d spend your Saturdays and Sundays waiting for him, all done up and pretty sitting on your couch only for an outfit and more makeup to go to waste as you stripped it all off at the end of the night. Not tonight though, you were getting done up, you looked amazing, but it wasn’t for him, it wasn’t going to waste, you were going out. You always saw posts about the club that your friends frequented on the weekends, and they used to invite you out to go with them, but after a while of you blowing them off, they had stopped asking. Maybe they’d be surprised to see you there, maybe you’d find someone to help take your mind off of Jay… Maybe you’d actually enjoy the weekend without him.
And you did, you had met up with your friends, you had taken in one too many shots, and you had drunkenly found someone on the dance floor who seemed genuinely interested in you, at least for the night. You didn’t even know the guy's name, but in a drunken, lust filled frenzy, he had somehow ended up in your bed that night as well. It was the perfect way to forget about Jay for the moment.
You woke up the next morning, your mind still hazy from the drinks you had the night before. There was a warmth beside you that you were unfamiliar with, not used to feeling when the sun's rays were beating clearly in through the window. It was too late in the morning for it to be Jay, so you reluctantly rolled over, your eyes met with an unfamiliar wavy black mop of hair on the pillow beside you.
For a moment you panicked, and by a moment, it was about a good five minutes, your heart racing as you continued to stare at the back of the guy's head. “Oh shit…” You muttered, but when you shifted to get out of bed, you felt something even more unfamiliar… Your pants were still on… Something that usually never occurred the morning after a night with Jay.
“Huh?” The man grumbled, shifting slightly before rolling over to face you, his eyes shooting open before he sat up in your bed. “So sorry! Hi! I’m-”
“Who are you?!” You shouted, scooting as far away from him as you could without falling off the edge of the bed. His hands were held up in front of him defensively, but his eyes, his face, everything about him seemed so sincere. He was still fully dressed as well, as you could see the top of his own jeans underneath the blankets that he had abruptly attempted to kick off of himself in the process.
“I was getting to that…” He chuckled nervously, clearly still disoriented from being startled from his slumber. “I’m Jake… We uh… We met at the club kind of.” Your eyes narrowed at the vagueness of the statement, and he quickly continued. “I’m best friends with one of your friends boyfriends… They wanted me to make sure you got home safely and… Once I got you home you went right to your room and started crying about some dude… He sounds like a real asshole by the way. But I didn’t really know if I should leave… I couldn’t lock your door from the outside and I just didn’t think it would be safe to leave the door unlocked when you were so drunk… I’m really sorry… I should have slept on the couch… But you were talking about the guy and we both ended up passing out.”
“So… we didn’t…” You questioned, and as if he already knew how the question would be finished, his head quickly shook, his hands shaking as well. “Thank god…” And now he looked slightly offended, taken aback by your words of relief, and it was your turn to defend yourself. “Not because like… I just didn’t want to be like… I didn’t want people to think that… You know…”
“I get it…” He smiled kindly, his hand ruffling through his hair before stretching, a loud yawn leaving his mouth. “So, are you hungry? I mean, the least I can do is get you breakfast since I scared the hell out of you this morning. I’m really sorry about that by the way… I probably should have slept on the couch or something.”
It was crazy how this guy who knew nothing about you, had gotten nothing from you, wanted to get you breakfast just because he had startled you this morning. You were so used to being left before the sun was even in the sky, you weren’t accustomed to sharing breakfast with anyone, let alone having it offered to you, and even more, you surely weren’t used to it being offered by a man that you had shared your bed with. Is this how things were supposed to be? “N-No… It’s fine… I uhm… You don’t have to keep apologizing. Not a lot of people would be so kind… especially to a stranger.” You sighed softly, your previous statement an insult in a way to the man that had lacked in the kindness department, the man that held a firm grasp onto your heart for some reason.
“So I can get you breakfast?” He posed, leaning forward slightly on the bed, his smile precious paired with his still sleep filled eyes. You tiredly nodded your head, letting out a yawn of your own before getting up. “I’m not really great at cooking so… I was thinking Macas drive thru? I can try making pancakes but I feel like your apartment will burn down and… I just don’t think your neighbors would appreciate that.”
A stranger, you didn’t know him at all, all you really did know was that he was your friend's boyfriend's friend, and while you had seen him occasionally show up in pictures that your friends would upload, you have never met him yourself. That was the craziest part, the fact that even with all of the unknown, you felt so comfortable around him, and he seemed to feel comfortable around you. His jokes had you giggling to yourself, sometimes even going into full fits of laughter that would have his eyes lighting up as the biggest, most beautiful smile you had ever seen graced his features. He was perfect, which in itself seemed like a strange fate type thing, you had gone to the club to forget about Jay for the evening, and now here you were, your mind completely cleared of the first man only to have it taken over completely by Jake.
Jake, who had become such a key part of your life, proving to you that you didn’t have to give up any part of yourself for him to stick around, he simply wanted a bit of your time because he enjoyed spending his with you. Days turned to weeks, weeks to months and he continued to be there, and at some point, he had asked you if you wanted to be his girlfriend. There wasn’t even a single second of hesitation before you had joyously agreed, and that was the first time you had even kissed him. Being with Jake was simple, it was like spending time with your best friend, he was your best friend, but he was also your boyfriend and you got to love him and kiss him, and he shared the same thoughts.
All thoughts of Jay were gone, it was like he never even existed in your life once Jake had come into it. His number had been muted and you couldn’t be bothered to check his messages even when you saw that new ones had come in. Jay was a piece of your past that you were more than happy to leave behind, wanting nothing more than to move forward in the happiness and love filled future that you had with Jake.
“Oh! I think that’s the popcorn machine!” You cheered when you heard the heavy rapping of a knock at your door, and Jakes eyes sparkled as he looked at you. “Did I forget to tell you that I got it? Well… I did! Movie nights are going to be so much fun!” You clapped your hands together before running over to the door, Jake tagging along behind you, his arms wrapping around you from behind as he waited for you to open the door.
All excitement vanished, completely faded when you looked at the man that was standing in your doorway, his eyes narrowed as he clearly looked at Jake behind you, who’s arms seemed to tighten around your waist. “So this is what you’ve been doing…” Jay muttered, his hand running through his hair as he shook his head. “Didn’t even think to shoot me a text to let me know that you found another one, huh?”
“I’m gonna guess that this is the guy you were telling me about before?” Jake murmured, although it seemed like he wasn’t really trying to be quiet, almost like he wanted Jay to hear him. And he did, he heard him clearly, Jays eyes narrowed at the man behind you, the irritation palpable as it radiated off of him. “Do you want me to leave you alone to talk to him or-“
You quickly shook your head, your hands moving up to hold Jake close to you, your actions only irritating Jay more. “Oh that’s really nice, Y/N. You can talk about me but you can’t talk to me. I’d love to know just what you said though, please tell me.” His arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the doorframe, making sure you couldn’t close the door on him. “Oh come on, you clearly had so much to say about me. What’s wrong? Can’t say it to my face?”
Jake was shaking, you could feel his entire body trembling behind you as he tried to retain his own anger. “She told me you’re an asshole, and she clearly wasn’t wrong.” He retorted, venom lacing his words as he spat them in Jays direction. “It takes a real piece of shit to ghost someone for three months after getting what you want from them and then try to show up on their doorstep after they finally ghosted your ass trying to make them seem like the bad person.”
Jays jaw was set, clenched tightly as his cheeks slightly hollowed, a true expression of anger that you were familiar with seeing on his face. “No need to act like a boyfriend, buddy. It’s just sex, she’s fine with you leaving. You’re being extra for what?” Even with being as pissed off as he was, he found a way to be the typical cocky, snarky asshole that he always was.
“I am her boyfriend.” Jake quickly corrected him, nuzzling his face into your neck just for added measure, the public display of affection in front of the man that you used to sleep with had your body burning up, but it also had butterflies swarming in your stomach, knowing that Jake loved you enough to be so open, to proudly show Jay that you were way more to him than just a booty call. “And unlike you, I’ll never hurt her. You don’t deserve someone as amazing as Y/N anyway.”
His eyes darted between you and Jake before his eyes shut, his head hanging low. “I never wanted to hurt her…” His voice was solemn and kind of sad, something that you had never heard when it came to him. “I just wasn’t ready for a relationship… But I wanted to have her… I wanted her to be mine.” His bottom lip was tucked between his teeth as he looked up at you through his lashes. “How could you leave me like this… and not even tell me?”
For a moment your heart panged with your own sadness, maybe even a little bit of guilt for not informing him… “We weren’t together.” You whispered, licking your lips that had gone dry in the time that Jake and Jay had been bickering back and forth. “I didn’t leave you… I… I just stopped being your convenient hookup for when you got bored.” Your voice was becoming shaky, hating the fact that this conversation was happening in front of Jake, the man that you loved so much, you didn’t want him to have to deal with this. “I don’t want to talk about this… It’s done… I’m done with that…”
“Why?” The question was unexpected, you didn’t think he’d actually question the reason for the ending of the beneficial agreement, you thought he’d just… naturally understand considering Jake was literally right there. It was clear that he wasn’t going to let this go, not unless he was winning. “For him? How could you just move on like that? I mean… You’d say every single time we got together that you loved me… You can’t just… Stop that feeling.”
It seemed like he was trying to piss you off, or piss Jake off… Or maybe the both of you. Whatever or whoever his target was, it was working. “I can stop that feeling, and I did. It was actually easy when it came to you because being with Jake made it really clear for me that the only thing you ever wanted from me was sex. I didn’t want to be that forever, and you made it pretty damn obvious that you never wanted anything but that with me. You never loved me, you only loved what I could give you. The only reason you’re even here right now is because you were scared that you lost it, and you know what, you were right.”
His tongue clicked against the roof of his mouth as his head slowly nodded, and the look of sadness was replaced with that cocky look once again. “Jake could never give you what I gave you. Don’t come crawling back to me when you realize that loser can’t please you the way I can. You’re replaceable… I’m not. I’ll already have someone else.”
The words that were meant to hurt you or upset you only made you feel disgusted, not just with him, but with yourself for feeling anything but disgust at him. Love is so blinding that it made you look past all of the features of him that made you so sick to your stomach now. All you wanted to do was slam the door in his face, but he wasn’t going to let that happen, he still stood against the frame, trying to be intimidating but all he was was annoying.
“Look bud…” Jake said, and you could tell that he was trying his best to be calm, his fingers gripping into your shirt as a means to keep his composure. “You said what you felt you had to say, it’s over now. And in regards to her pleasure… I’m pleasing her just fine. It’s not all about sex, it’s about how happy she is, and I make sure she’s happy every single day. This is the only time since I’ve been with her that she hasn’t been happy, and that’s because of you… So could you just do everyone a favor and leave?”
Jay scoffed as he threw his arms up in the air, slowly backing away from the door. “He can have you! You weren’t that good anyway! You were just easy!” He called out, making a scene, his voice growing louder as if he wanted the neighbors to hear, he wanted you to be humiliated, but Jake was quick to shut the door, locking it before turning to face you with a smile.
“So…” He started, and your stomach sank as you worried about what he’d say, if he’d want to leave you after what Jay said. “That guy is an asshole. Can we get back to our movie now? I think we left off at the part where we were cuddling and really comfy under our blanket. Let’s go.” His arm draped over your shoulder, leading you back to the couch and pulling you down beside him. You were happy, and the kind of pleasure that you got from Jake was a kind that Jay could never give you. All hearts break at least once, but there was always someone, there was always a Jake who would be there to mend them when you least expect it, and now… Now you couldn’t even remember the feeling of heartbreak, only the fullness and warmth of being loved unconditionally by someone.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All Jongseong could think about right now was how much of an idiot he is. He should've noticed earlier.
He should've noticed you flinching at sudden sounds. How you were scared to be close to him earlier in your relationship. How despite everything you still gave people a chance.
He should've noticed that you were still hurt. Even though you continuously reassured your friends that you had moved on from the past. He should've known you were still hurting.
He has always known about your past abusive household. How you cowered away when someone just looked at you in an angry way.
He felt his chest hurt at the thought of being mad at you, let alone raise his hand on you.
And he was so patient with you. Never pushing you to find solace in him or making you tell him what had happened.
Maybe that's why you wanted to run far away from him, because he made you feel so safe. It was a foreign feeling for you and it truly scared you.
Maybe that was why you currently locked yourself in the bathroom, while Jongseong pleaded you to open the door.
At some point your mind blanked, you couldn't even remember what had happened, all you could muster out were sobs.
Unknowingly, you craved his presence. You wanted nothing more than his holding you.
So you opened the bathroom door just enough for him to see your face.
Jongseong felt relieved the moment his eyes laid on your form.
And then he felt guilty, he shouldn't have left you alone. He shouldn't have let you go to the convenience store nearby.
But then again, he had no clue that you would 'accidentally' run into him, the man you were running away from for so long.
He waited till you walked closer to him, he didn't want to scare you. When you were close enough, he slowly lifted his hand, silently asking for permission.
Everyday you wondered what had you done to deserve a boyfriend like him, throughout your relationship he had shown nothing but compassion.
That's why you felt safe enough to wrap your hands around him and take in his warmth.
It would take you some time to stop running away from your demons and face them.
But for now his arms around you as he muttered sweet nothings in your ear is all you need.

Tumblr media
Turning up at your college friend’s wedding reception was one of the unexpected things you did tonight. You were drowning in paperwork lately, and you just wanted it all to be finished by the following day.
But here you were in a body-tight, velvety black dress, champagne glass in hand, and a throbbing heart with a mind full of what-ifs. You impulsively thought of the things that could go unplanned tonight. What could go wrong, right?
The colorful lights glimmered across the hall as the disco ball gradually turned itself around. You weren’t sure why you came at first, but now that you were feeling the vibe, it made you want to go back to the graduation ball of ‘95 when you spent it with your best friend turned lover for the night turned best friend again in his flat after a few wine and chaste kisses.
It’s been a while since you last saw Heeseung. A good seven years to be exact.
Unlike Ni-ki and Sunghoon, Heeseung sent you messages of comfort and even flirting at times, until he got himself a girlfriend in the same place he had been working at. You would find yourself smiling at random, thinking about him finally getting the love he deserves.
You walked further to where some of your old classmates were huddled at. A glint of happiness flashed upon your face when you saw Jungwon— a close friend of yours since college. He was always reserved and there were oftentimes when he just disappeared from your side and you would find him in the library the next instant.
You got used to it, after all, you were always assigned next to one another in seating arrangements for the whole course of your college years. You felt like you knew him pretty well.
He’s just… always there. But you’re not that comfy with each other compared to your best friends, the ones that left you. Jungwon’s got a squad of his own where people called them ‘nerds’ or ‘geeks’. Of course, at one time you were a part of it, but after the whole shenanigans with Jay during your sophomore year, people started looking at you like a different person.
To them, it was a good thing, but to you and Jay, it never was.
But Jungwon’s another story for another time.
“Hey, there cutie!” You gently nudged him on the side.
“Y/n— h… hi,”
“Not gonna lie, you look way more handsome without the glasses. Dude, when did you get rid of them?” Jungwon ran a hand across his nape as he smiled sheepishly at your compliment. “I thought maybe getting rid of it would help me from being too dependent on them. I guess it worked.” He shrugs.
In the midst of your catching up, a slow, romantic song played through the speakers hanging against every corner of the hall. You hang your lips on the brim of your wine glass as you look around, slowly feeling the awkwardness between you and your friend. You were never this loud and chatty with him.
The things you would often talk about were mostly centered around your course— mainly the subjects you’re taking and the advanced classes he took.
“Y/n?” You quickly shot him a look of surprise when you felt the warmth of his breath against the back of your shoulder blades. “Do you… can you… would you like to dance with me?” You always find it cute when he nibbles the inside of his lower lip and he knits his eyebrows together in contemplation.
A habit of his when he stutters and finds it hard to rephrase his words. “I would love to.”
He gently grabbed your hand when you locked your fingers with him, guiding you to the center of the hall together with a few other couples slowly swaying their bodies to the ballad. You thought it was very manly of him to dominantly put your hands on the back of his neck and gently pull you closer to him, giving you two a fair distance as he rested his gaze upon your lips.
But far from the slow dancers and the gradual turn of the disco lights, stood another man with a hand tucked in his pocket and the other slowly swirling a wine glass, carefully squinting his eyes in observance at an oddly friendly pair.
With Jay's mouth agape and eyes opened wide, he knew he must keep himself very still while he waited for a chance to longingly look at that familiar face for utter proof. But there was no use in waiting when your name bounced off the room in repeated cheers and awe.
He walked towards the direction of where you and Jungwon were with a plan in mind until your dance partner twirled you around, making Jay stop in his tracks and look at how genuine your smile was with another guy. Everyone cooed and whistled at Jungwon's little stunt, but the latter wasn’t one to let his guard down.
Jay walked further to where you were and knowingly cleared his throat just for everyone to look at him in awkward silence. “Can I have my girl back, Jungwon?”
You stood there for a long while until you leaned in closer to Jungwon's ear for a whisper that made him walk away from you with a forced smile etched on his face.
Everyone then went back to what they were doing, and you walked closer to where your former rival was. “Nice way to steal everyone’s attention.” Your fingers brushed against his dashing tux with a smirk plastered on your face.
“There’s an art to getting your way and twirling you around like that isn’t one of them.” You could only blush at him with the thought that he still knows you so well. As the slow, sweet song continued to play, he took the chance to slowly pull you closer to him as he rested his hand on the small of your back with his cheek leaning against your temple.
“I’ve been checking you out.” He whispered with a deep voice that made your heart throb faster than before.
“Let’s see, you slightly embarrassed me this evening by telling everyone I’m your girl, only to tell your old foe you’ve been checking her out.” You say to his face as you click your tongue. “The way you flirt, Jay, is so shameful. You haven’t changed at all, have you?” He could only chuckle. “But it’s okay. I mean, I told Jungwon you were my date tonight so,”
“Oh yeah? You really told him that, didn’t you? Wow, Y/n. You never changed.” You felt proud of yourself for a little while before Jay slowly pulled you into a tight hug and hid his face in the crook of your neck. You recognized this little trick of his as it’s his favorite among his many ones because he can easily put you at ease with just one snuggle.
And you did. You felt so good and relaxed in this state that you almost, almost whispered an 'I love you’. But you gulped down the deafening thought thinking he’d never look at you the same way.
You two have always drawn a solid line between romantic attachments and fooling around. Impulsively telling him your feelings would only make things worse, you thought.
You were holding Jay very close, close enough that you can smell his hair. You sniffed on it and whispered, lips too close you’re both almost an inch away from a peck. “I don’t like your new shampoo.”
“Still not over my sage-scented one, huh?”
The memories were still vivid up to now; of how you two used to screw each other a lot but at the same time, kept the rival reputation stable in the public eye.
Jay would never admit it, but he genuinely loved spending time with you, especially without the screwing part. There was just something about you that made him feel so safe and still is.
“Do you hate me, Y/n?” Jay mumbled under his breath, but audible enough for you to hear.
“I could never.” He only sighed in relief with that pretty smile on his face.
“Why? Do you hate me or something?” Jay moved away from the comfort of your neck and turned to look at you. He moved a few strands away from your face to put them behind your ear and slowly brushed his thumb against your rosy cheek. With an intense gaze shooting straight through your hazel orbs, he replied.
“Or something,” he chuckled. “I’m actually quite in love with you, really.”
And that’s when you realized that Park Jongseong had been knowingly walking the faint line in balance all along, just waiting for the finest moment to finally declare his almost a decade-worth of adoration for you.
You suddenly closed the gap between you two by smashing your lips against his. And for the first time, your kisses weren’t rough and sloppy, but slow and passionate as he took his time to explore your lips and their every curve like how an adventurer would familiarize himself with a map.
Your hands slowly crawled from his nape to his hair as you gently tugged it on impulse. Jay just let out a breathy chuckle under your lips before diving in for another one.
“Funny, I used to be very in love with you too.” You whispered under breathy exhales.
“Used to?” he chuckled. “What went wrong?”
“Everything.” His eyes stared up from your lips to your sincere eyes.
“To be very honest, you gave me a really great time, Jay.  Screwing or not, you were my favorite person at one point. I could still remember the mornings when my head didn’t hurt from crying too much the night before, and you were there to hold me so close because I was losing my shit. I will always thank you for those times, the most.”
“Why do I feel so nervous about what comes after that statement?” You softly chuckled, and it felt relieving to hear him return the favor.
“What we had was mainly temporary, we both knew that too well. Things were never gonna end with us, Jay. You and I screwing with each other was just for the fleeting pleasures and satisfactions. Love is far too different from lust, I’m afraid.”
“I know. But at some point, I was really in love with you. I got it bad and until now, you still brought a fire in my heart like it was just yesterday.” Jay found some loose strands almost covering your other eye so he slowly tucked them at the back of your ear while taking the time to run his fingers against your scalp. You sharply inhaled at his slightest touch.
“It was really comforting to see you again. I kinda missed our little yesterdays, but I don’t want to think that sleeping with each other would be the sole reason that could lead us to what could have been if we tried harder.”
“You will always be my favorite muse.” Jay planted a soft kiss on your forehead and remained there for a whole minute until the song ended. It would be wiser, you thought, if you finally gave each other the needed closure.
He was a playboy after all and up until now, you still think he is. Jay covering his traces of broken hearts with new tattoos was utter proof. You remembered finding your overused line on his shoulder blade that says ‘temporary’.
And you knew that if the both of you happened, you’re only going to break his heart, over and over again, and he will too because that’s something you both have in common; something that ignited the weary fires in your hearts when you both agreed to something that night, something you never expected to last longer than your other friendships.
With Jay, it will always be fairy lights on dim nights, chasing stars, and dancing silhouettes on white walls. Just when he thought he was getting closer to knowing where he belonged,
you break his heart for one, final time. —

Hwang Y/N was 21 years old when she woke up from a coma that lasted for three years. Her fingers twitched, and her eyes slowly scanned her surroundings, indicating that she was, indeed, alive and out of her vegetated state. Her wandering eyes met with those of a middle-aged woman whose features were similar to her own. A cold hand caressed her face, and watery eyes looked at her. Similarly, a middle-aged man stood behind the woman with the same glossy eyes.
"Who are you?" slipped out of Y/N's mouth. This was enough to make tears spill out of the eyes of the two adults standing by her hospital bed. The woman muffled her quiet sobs and was gently pushed to the side by the man standing behind her. In a shaky voice and through a sad smile, he spoke, "We're your parents. This is your mother, and I'm your father."
Shocked and frightened by her inability to recognize her parents, Y/N felt tears well up in her eyes, yet they would not spill. Wiping his own away, her father reached for Y/N's eyes and swiped her tears with his thumb. "Don't cry," he would say. "Here, drink some water." He unscrewed the bottle and held out the bottle for Y/N to sip from. The room temperature liquid slid down her throat, as she tried to calm herself down.
She didn't know why, but the water suddenly reminded her of her family's house near a lake that would become crowded during fishing season. There, she would recall herself and two adults (presumably her parents) on their way to said lake with fishing gear. The first fish she ever caught was the first memory to come back to her.
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🥐
The first day after awakening, Y/N munched on a crunchy curry bun that came from a food stall residing in the park near the hospital. Her father bought her a dozen buns, "in case you get hungry later on" he would explain. The savory, spicy filling full of potatoes, carrots and minced meat filled Y/N's mouth, and the scent of it wafted in the air, causing her dad to steal a bun for himself.
The flavorful bun brought back memories of her first physical fight.
[Y/N's arm stung from being punched by a boy much older and taller than her. There was definitely going to be a bruise later. The male's large figure didn't intimidate her, however, as she persisted and swung her arms with all her might and kicked him wherever she found an open spot.
Behind her was a boy whose name or face she could not recall with two patrol guards following him. He was the whole reason why she was involved in this fight anyways. The boy had been shoved into a wall next to the entrance of the convenience store. Y/N assumed that it was a mutual fight between guys, as the boy she had been protecting looked like a typical tough, bad boy. She thought wrong.
Y/N stepped in when she witnessed the boy getting his wallet snagged off of him and getting punched to the ground. With her fastest speed, Y/N ran towards the thief and his victim with her school bag above her head. As she approached closer and closer, and as the thief looked back in surprise, Y/N flung her bag at his face, causing the wallet to drop. She picked it up and threw it towards its owner before being shoved by the thief.
"You have no idea who you're messing with!" A big fist stretched outwards. Y/N was moments away from being punched in the face. Unbeknownst to him, she had seven years of taekwondo experience tucked into her belt. Unluckily for her, her reflexes were not as great as her kicking strength. Although she took a great blow to the face, she countered his offense with multiple kicks. Y/N silently thanked her mom for signing her up for taekwondo. As she combatted the bulky teen, the other boy had brought two patrolling police officers with him to stop the fight and take away the man who attempted to rob him, which brings them to the current situation.
Y/N was pried off of the man as the two officers arrived in the midst of a hair-pulling competition. Her kicks deemed to be not as effective as she wanted them to be since her opponent sure knew how to block. Therefore, she resorted to the next best thing: pulling his hair until it comes out.
Once the two combatants were separated, the two officers held the thief by his arms, and the boy who Y/N had saved came up to her with a worried look on his face. "Are you okay?"
"I think I might have dislocated a shoulder, but I'm all good!" Y/N laughs heartily in response. Once she did not receive a laugh in return, she was quick to apologize. The boy noticed a bruise beginning to form on her cheek, so he commanded her to stay put as he ran into the convenience store. She picked up her bag and sat on the bench outside of the store.
The boy came back out with a small pack of frozen fruit and a plastic bag with two buns inside. Once he caught sight of her, he rushed over and held the frozen package of fruit up to her cheek where she had been punched.
"Woah, that's cold!"
"Sorry..." The boy apologized. He then pulled a bun outside of the plastic bag and handed it to her. "Here, this is a token of my appreciation for saving me."
"Looks delicious, so I won't say no!" Y/N took a big chomp from her bun filled with curry and melted into the bench. She looked at the boy and thanked him with a smile on her face, cheeks full of bread and curry.]

Later in the evening, Y/N sat mindlessly on her hospital bed while sucking on her teeth to get a piece of meat out from between. Her father's sudden appearance that came with the loud slam of her sliding door startled her and led to the girl biting on her tongue.
The metallic taste of blood brought back memories of an annoyingly painful paper cut she got in high school.
["Ah!" Y/N held her finger up with her other hand when she felt a stinging sensation spread across the pad of her index finger. A red horizontal line appeared, and more red seemed to peep out from the cut.
"Y/N! Are you okay?!" Y/N sucked on her index finger to get rid of the blood but quickly pulled it out once she felt the terribly painful sting on her finger.
"Just got a paper cut."
"Wait, I think I have a bandaid." Y/N watched the boy in front of her rummage through his backpack for his first aid kit. She watched as his hands pulled out a small plastic container labeled "first aid", and she watched as his hands gently took her own in his. He gently dabbed gauze on her finger before blowing on the cut. He then carefully wrapped a Pokémon bandaid around her finger. Y/N giggled upon the sight of Charmander.
"Thank you, $_>#%|."]
Huh, that was weird. She couldn't recall his name.
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🍨
The second day after awakening, Y/N was greeted in the morning by her father with a fruit parfait in one hand and another in his other hand (probably for himself). He told the girl about the scolding he received from her mother about how unhealthy it was to be eating a parfait with that much whipped cream and sugar in the morning, but "YOLO" as he likes to say.
Y/N laughed and took the first bite out of her parfait. The perfect balance of bitter flavor from the matcha and the sweetness from the fruits and whipped cream danced in her mouth.
The harmonious teamwork of the parfait's ingredients brought back memories of her first date.
[Y/N played with the outside of her parfait's cup; the beads of water on the outside of the glass kissed her fingertips. Her eyes remained on the whipped cream of her parfait and would once in awhile glance at her Charmander bandaid or outside of the shop in search for her date.
Her head perked up when she heard the shop's entrance bell jingle. A unison chorus of "welcome!"s from the staff were heard. A body in a school uniform matching her own made it's way towards the table she sat at.
"Sorry I'm late! I was waiting for the florist to finish my order." The boy pulled out a small bouquet of her favorite flowers and offered it for the girl to take. The scent immediately entered her nose and caused a warm, fuzzy feeling to arise in her chest. She smiled sweetly at the boy before handing him a spoon and pushing the parfait in the middle of the table.
"Cheers." she prompted. The flavor of matcha, cream and fruits engulfed them in a state of happiness... that, and their presence in each other's eyes.]
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🫕
Upon her third day of awakening, her mother was the one to visit this time. Y/N's morning began with the scent of fresh congee with green onions in front of her along with her mother sharing her story about nagging her husband to bring the girl a more nutritional breakfast the next time he were to visit.
"This is going to be your last breakfast in the hospital, dear. You're getting discharged tomorrow." Y/N's mother soothingly stroked the girl's head. "The doctor said you surprised her with your physical therapy results! She said you were able to stand and walk for a long period of time. That's impressive considering you've been asleep for three years."
"Kids in my class would have called that 'sleeper build'."
"You kids and your weird slang will never cease to confuse me."
Y/N laughed before taking a spoonful of congee into her mouth only to instantly regret it afterwards. Her mom scolded her for not blowing on it properly. The surface of her tongue burned with the piping hot congee being swished around, but it's homemade flavor was amazing nonetheless.
The warmness and subtle flavor of congee brought back memories of catching a fever and being unable to attend her school's function.
[Y/N turned her head in refusal to the spoonful of congee that her friend pushed towards her mouth. The boy sighed and put the spoon back into the bowl. He picked up the packet full of notes and assignments the girl had missed due to being sick and placed them on her vanity table. He sat down at the foot of her bed and sighed, still holding the bowl of congee.
"I know you're bummed about not being able to go to the dance, but you won't be able to go to any dances at all if you don't get better soon." Y/N childishly kicked the boy even though she knew it was true. The boy yelped and scooted further away from her. He placed the bowl of congee on top of the school packet. He stood up as an idea arose in his mind and pulled his phone out of his jacket's pocket.
With a curious look on her face, Y/N tried to peek at the boy's screen. He was quick to notice her snooping and turned his back to her before turning back around once a slow song filled the silence of the room. He placed his phone on the chair in front of the vanity table and held his hand out to the girl.
Although her heart was fluttering, Y/N held the blanket up closer to her face and scooted further back into a corner of her bed.
"You might get sick."
"Oh, I'm bound to get sick because of how many times I've been in here already during your fever." He walked closer to her. "A little dance won't hurt, will it?"
Persuaded by his handsome face and the slight teasing tone in his voice, Y/N rose from her bed and took his hand. He pulled her closer to him and placed his chin on top of her head. The two teenagers slowly swayed to the soft melody coming out of his phone. This was far from the glamorous night Y/N thought she would have, but it was far more perfect than anything she could have imagined.]
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🌭
Upon her fourth day after awakening, Y/N was freed from the hospital. With a slight limp, Y/N walked down the sidewalk from the hospital and browsed the various food shops that lined the streets. Her giant black boot that the doctor said would help her walk was starting to get annoying; however, her hunger was greater than her annoyance. She wanted those cheesy, meaty sticks of heaven with potatoes on the outside layer. She walked as fast as she could towards a Korean corn dog shop with her mother quickening her own pace to catch up.
Nearing the entrance, Y/N reached out to pull the door's handle, but the door had already opened and collided with her forehead. She yelped and stumbled backwards from the sudden impact.
"Woah! Be careful, there!" A firm and sturdy arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her in to keep her from falling onto the ground. Y/N looked up and met a handsome face staring at her with concern. It felt like a sweet, long eternity being held in the arms of the man. His eyes seemed to widen for a split second once scanning the features of the girl's face, but maybe she was just imagining it. Ah, she must be in heaven. "Are you alright?" the man spoke. Nope, she was still on Earth.
"Oh, yes," Y/N regained her footing with the help of her savior and dusted off the imaginary dirt on her pants. "Sorry about that."
"No, it's not your fault! I should have checked if there was anyone outside before opening the door so hastily." The way he spoke reminded her of the boy in her memories. All she could recall were his mannerisms, the way he sounded and his height. His face and his identity couldn't be found anywhere in her jumbled brain. "Anyways, were you about to go inside?" Only then did she realize the man in front of her was an employee; the small cartoon corn dog on the breast pocket of his shirt gave it away.
"Uh, are you guys still open?" She pointed to the shop behind him.
"We were actually just about to close, but I can make you something before we do!"
"Oh no, I wouldn't want to keep you behind."
"I insist. Think of it as an apology for earlier." The man glanced at her medical boot and held his arm out, indicating that he would let her use it as walking support.
"Well then, thank you." Y/N smiled sweetly. Her first encounter with someone outside of the hospital was a disaster, but at least it led her to meet the handsome boy—who she learned was named Park Jongseong, or Jay as he liked his friends to call him—and to one of the most delicious cheesy potato corn dogs she's had in awhile (likely in over three years). She paid no mind to the private conversation between her mother and Jay, thinking that they were discussing the payment for the corn dogs, and she continued to idly sit at her table and munch on her food. She swung her good leg in delight.
The crunchy, sugary exterior and long strings of mozzarella cheese reminded her of the boy once again—this time of the beginning of their romantic relationship.
[The humidity of the air made their school uniforms stick to their bodies. Their sweat acted as the glue between their skin and the fabric of their shirts. Despite the blazing hot sun's angry presence, the boy walked a good twenty minutes from their high school to this corn dog shop with the girl. No shaded area shielded them from the wrath of the sun, but the journey was worth every step.
The corn dogs were as tasty as they looked. The excitement that took over the girl's body controlled her to order one corn dog in each flavor for herself while the boy had only ordered two. Appreciative of him walking through what seemed like hell to get here, Y/N gratefully paid for his food.
The girl happily swung her legs under the table as she finished off her first corn dog—the one with crushed dried noodles on the outside. Moving onto the second corn dog, she took a big bite and watched the cheese from the inside extend. The string of cheese stretched longer and longer until Y/N could not tilt her head back any further. The boy watched her with amusement as she tilted her head back once again to snap the cheese, but to no avail, the cheese only persisted. His adoration for her hearty appetite and her determination for any task given to her, both mundane and extraordinary, were only a few of the things he loved about her. It would take a long time to list everything he adored—maybe even longer than it would take for Y/N to finally break the never-ending string of cheese that seemed to stretch for eternity.
Chewing on the glob of stringy cheese she pulled out from the corn dog, Y/N nodded in victory and delight. She had transcended to her own world.
"Just watching you eat makes me full," he smiled while reaching his thumb out to wipe away the bits of sugar that clung to the corner of her mouth. "I feel like I could watch you eat forever." She only laughed and kicked him under the table.
"You better eat yours too! Before I gobble them up," she threatened. He laughed and picked up a corn dog. Without carrying out his primary intention of taking the first bite of his untouched corn dog, he held onto the stick of it and continued to watch her joyfully eat her third one. He knew how much she loved potatoes, so this one definitely had to be her favorite. He also knew how much he loved her and how she was definitely his favorite. Without much thinking, and due to his infatuation with the girl, he blurted out what he had hoped to confess for years.
"I like you." His confession was followed by a choked cough and Y/N hitting her chest to clear her airway.
"What was that?" she asked with a mouth full of cheese, potatoes and breading.
"I like you." Without a flinch, he confessed once again and moved onto taking a bite out of his corn dog.
"Then let's date." It was his turn to choke on his food.
"What?"
"I like you too, #%<^_."]
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🍛
Upon her seventh day of awakening, and her third day after meeting Jay, Y/N shakily did her makeup in the mirror of her bedroom's bathroom. Her own reflection stared back at her with clumpy mascara and sloppy eyeshadow.
"Yeah, let's maybe not wear makeup today." Y/N threw away her mascara, concluding that it was expired and way overdue its time. The posters of all of the boy bands and shows she adored from high school decorated her bedroom. Besides the neatly fixed bed, it was as though she hadn't been in here for three years.
After wiping the makeup off of her eyes, Y/N waddled out of the room and grabbed her bag on the way out. She slowly descended the stairs and announced that she was going to a curry restaurant to her parents.
"Do you have your boot?"
"Yes, Mom!"
"Don't take it off yet! You almost fell the last time you tried!"
"I hear you!" Y/N slipped through the house's entranceway and met the cool winter breeze outside. This was her first time going out without her parents after waking up from her coma, but luckily she wouldn't be completely alone today. A black car stopped in front of her gates, and the tinted window of the driver's seat rolled down to reveal Jay with a hand on the steering wheel. He caught sight of her and waved.
"Ready to go?"
"Yup! I'm super excited to try that place." She excitedly waddled to the passenger's seat of his car.
Maybe she was a bit too excited and not because of the curry. Seated at one of the tables in the curry house Jay drove them to, she nervously flipped through the menu while continuously stealing glances at Jay. Distracted and clammy, Y/N ordered whatever her finger landed on in the menu, and the waiter paid no mind to her behavior. Instant regret washed over her as soon as she took the first bite.
The overwhelming amount of onions and spices burned her mouth and violated not only her throat once she swallowed, but also her nostrils as it was filled with the scent of onions. She was experiencing a heavy sense of deja vu.
"Wow, you're brave for ordering the spiciest thing here. Even their regular curry makes my mouth burn."
The extremely spicy curry that brought tears to her eyes and made her stomach cry for help allowed Y/N to recall her second date with the boy in her memories.
[Y/N coughed and spluttered as she swallowed her first spoonful of curry. To no surprise, it was extremely spicy just as its name, "Super Duper Spicy Eye-Watering Curry", implies.
"You okay? Is it too spicy?" He filled her glass with water. Y/N only shook her head and said she was fine despite how fried her voice sounded. This is the consequence of her own action, as she paid no attention when ordering and let fate decide what she were to eat that day. Despite her boldly asking the boy to date her, she was feeling shy on their date; this was only the second time they had been out together, but the first time as lovers. Her infatuation with the boy led her to eat the restaurant's spiciest curry available. She was surprised nobody had died from eating this.
"Here, I think you'll like this one." The boy took both of their plates in his hands and switched them. He didn't wait for the girl to say anything before chowing down on the gut-destroying curry in front of him. Tears really were brought to his eyes.
"Wait! You don't have to eat it for me!"
"I don't mind. Your stomach is gonna hurt later if you keep eating this."
"So is yours, silly."
"At least the restaurant won't be held accountable for false advertising. This really is bringing tears to my eyes, haha!"]
(^o^)/ <(밥 먹자!) 🍝
"What do you mean by that?" Y/N clutched the strap of her bag.
"Sweetheart, she didn't mean it like that–"
"No no, I'm not offended. I'm just confused why Mom is so against me going over to Jay's house for dinner. We're making spaghetti and watching a movie. Is there anything wrong with that?"
"I didn't say there was anything wrong with the spaghetti or watching a movie; I'm just saying that I'm not comfortable letting you be with him."
"Mom, I promise nothing is going to happen. Jay is a good guy, and you've met him already. At the corn dog shop, remember?" Frustrated and trying to contain her temper, Y/N's mother stayed silent and waved her off.
"Just don't stay out too long," she finally says before Y/N leaves through the door with a small "I love you" and "I'll be back soon".
Once their daughter leaves through the door, Mrs. Hwang looks at her husband and sighs.
"Why didn't you stop her?" Mr. Hwang gently strokes the side of his wife's face.
"I know it's painful, but we have to let her do this. She's been recovering her memories bit by bit, so who are we to get in the way?" He embraces her and feels the warm tears falling from her eyes getting caught on his sweatshirt. "I know, I know." He comfortingly strokes her head. "Let her find out herself, okay? We'll be there for her every step of the way. We can't keep one of the most important aspects of her life a secret from her forever."
A few hours after Y/N's arrival, the two sat on Jay's grey twill couch and chowed down on their spaghetti. Lady and the Tramp played on his wide flat-screen TV, and Jay watched as the girl intently paid attention to the movie in front of her.
"You know, I don't think I've watched this movie before. I can't remember if I have."
"Oh, is that so?" Y/N turned her head to look at Jay.
The reason remained unknown as to why her heart fluttered as much as it did in that moment she tore her eyes away from the screen and made eye contact with the boy who did most of the work when preparing their dinner.
The savory and slightly sour tomato sauce with minced meat paired with the bouncy pasta cooked to perfection brought back memories of her first kiss.
["?=*~\, can we please recreate this scene?" Y/N begged the boy as she showed him a clip of the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp.
"I've never even watched the movie."
"You don't have to when I'm showing you all the reference you need." He sighed as Y/N tugged his arm to get him out of his chair.
"You're helping me cook the spaghetti."
And so she did. Well, tried to at least. Her sloppy meatballs did no justice to the perfectly presented and appetizing pasta sitting atop two ceramic plates.
"We don't need this one." Y/N pushed one plate to the side. The boy sighed for the second time and pulled out two forks from his cutlery drawer.
It took at least ten minutes for the two to give up on "coincidentally" picking the same strand of spaghetti and for Y/N to manually pick one out and give the other end of it to her partner.
Their faces inched closer and closer with every small bite of spaghetti. Y/N's face felt hot, and so did his, yet he would never let it show that this flustered him. Their lips were a centimeter apart at this point. Y/N stopped biting and hesitated to make the last move. Thankfully for her, she had a boyfriend that was willing to do it for her. Their lips met for a brief moment before they pulled apart. The tension that they shared through their gazes directed into the other's eyes entranced them to collide their lips back together for a longer, sweeter kiss than what was shared in Lady and the Tramp. He thought they were a cuter couple than those two dogs, anyway.]

Her heart pounded as much as her feet ached. She rested her back against the ice rink's outer barrier that was outside of the rink itself. The ice skating shoes she wore felt a size smaller than the size written on it should have felt. She didn't complain, though; after being in a medical boot for almost a month, Y/N felt free to finally stand on her own two feet, and taking a blogger's advice to go ice skating for leg-strength training was a great decision since she found an excuse to ask Jay to spend the day with her. Her hands were at a higher temperature than the rest of her body due to the warm cup of hot chocolate Jay bought for her. In his own hands was a takeout coffee cup in the same size, but it contained a white chocolate mocha latte inside instead of hot chocolate.
Y/N took the first sip of her drink, but she did not dwell on her recollection of the first time the boy in her memories said "I love you" to her after drinking hot chocolate on a cold night like this.
The brief "I love you" that had sent her teenage self into a spiral for weeks earned back its spot in her memory archive, but she did not recall anything else the boy had said that night. Instead of trying to remember, Y/N turned her head to look at Jay who stood to the left of her.
"This reminds me of my first boyfriend."
"The ice rink?" Jay responded.
"No, the hot chocolate. He said 'I love you' to me for the first time when we were out together on a cold night."
"Oh yeah? Must've been quite special." She smiled at him; its warm effect on his insides did a better job than the coffee he was drinking.
Y/N didn't know why she suddenly spewed out what she said to him, but she felt like it was something worth sharing. She considered the possibility that Jay might've not cared, but it didn't matter to her. She wanted Jay to know everything about her just as she was rediscovering everything about herself. It was a journey she wanted both of them to take even if she thinks that her travel buddy may not care in the slightest.

Despite the grumpy expression on her mom's face, Y/N watched as Mrs. Hwang took the box of cookies out of Jay's hands before thanking him and shutting the door in his face. In that same moment, she received a text message from him: 'I just dropped off cookies at your house. I gotta get to work, so I couldn't stay for long, haha. I hope you like them!'
She wanted to call him a liar because she clearly saw her mom deny his entry into their home, but she decided not to and thanked him for the cookies instead.
Determined to know what happens in the next episode of the drama she was watching, Y/N sprinted downstairs and snatched a few cookies from the box before going back upstairs. Paranoid about her daughter's leg not being fully healed, Mrs. Hwang yelled out for her to be careful or else "the boot goes back on!".
The cookies in her hands were still warm, and it left a good impression on her when she finally shoved one into her mouth. The sweet, chewy disc of goodness spread its flavor throughout her tastebuds. She couldn't help but roll her eyes and slouch in delight.
The very familiar recipe, however, struck a core memory that had been trapped away.
Jay's red velvet cookies surfaced Y/N's memories of a lovely picnic date turned sour.
["I can't believe we're graduating in a few weeks! Isn't that crazy?" The boy laughed in contentment as he stared up at the blue sky with clouds drifting by. He was met with silence from the girl laying down next to him on their shared picnic blanket.
"Hey, Y/N, are you okay?" The girl turned her body to one side and didn't bother responding. The boy placed his hand on her bare arm, and the warmth from it transferred to her cold skin.]
Y/N shuddered as a fragment of the memory came back to her. She took a bite from her second cookie.
["Baby, talk to me. Are you okay? Are you feeling cold? Is the food making your stomach hurt?" Annoyed by his questions, the girl pulled her arm away from his grip, and her skin was already missing the warmth of his. "Did I... did I do something wrong?"
"You're leaving me."]
Bite.
["Leaving you? What do you mean leaving you?"
"You're leaving me!" She sat up from her position.
"Why would I ever leave you? You know how much I love you!"]
Bite.
["You're leaving me to go back to Seattle aren't you? For that stupid culinary school!" She stood up.
"Y/N, I've been dreaming of going to that school since I was a kid! It's been my dream to open up a restaurant." He stood up from the picnic blanket.
"But what about me? What about us? What if you go off with some other girl while you're in America and forget all about me? Why am I the only one trying to keep our relationship standing?!"
"Will you just stop?! Did I get mad at you when you told me that you were planning to study in Japan? No! What makes it any different that I want to study abroad too?!"
"But the school I want isn't across the freaking ocean!"
"You're being irrational if you think I'm going to choose between you or that culinary school."]
Bite.
Roll. Drip. Drop.
A tear fell from Y/N's eye.
["Then go!"
"Y/N, that's not what I meant–"
"Just go to your stupid school already, Jay!"]
Jay?
With every tear that dropped from her eyes, the mess of scribbles that covered the face of the boy in her memories were washed away. His face was that same handsome face she encountered in front of the corn dog shop. At that curry restaurant. At his house, on his couch eating spaghetti with him. At the ice rink. At the front step of her house just minutes earlier.
An immense amount of guilt washed over her. All of those moments spent with the boy she dated and tried to hold back from chasing after his dreams made her feel nauseous and stuffy. Does Jay remember her? Does he remember her as the girl he used to date? As the girl who got mad at him for wanting to pursue his passion?
She couldn't handle this. She needed to destress and sort out her emotions in some way. What better way than to get something from the convenience store? Yes, she was a stress eater.

Y/N hugged herself to gather warmth that would defend her against her hometown's cold winter temperature. Despite freezing her legs off from going out in shorts and a thin jacket, Y/N bought an ice cream cone. Eating ice cream in cold weather was a pleasurable feeling whose cause is unknown to the universe.
It became less pleasurable and rather miserable when yet another memory resurfaced after taking the first bite of her ice cream.
The soft serve vanilla ice cream reminded her of the event leading to her near-death experience.
["Was I too harsh on him?" she mumbled to herself and took another bite out of her vanilla soft serve. The argument with her boyfriend caused the couple to ignore each other for the last two full weeks of school before their graduation day. It made the girl feel awful, but she couldn't imagine how much pain she must have inflicted on her lover.
Deciding to apologize to him and encourage her boyfriend to follow his culinary dreams, Y/N nodded to herself and stood up. It was an hour until Jay's apartment complex closed its gates to visitors, so she decided to run as fast as she could.
Oncoming lights from cyclists alerted Y/N to move out of the way for them to pass on the sidewalk. It was dark outside, and it was colder than the past few days. With a red nose, aching feet and a heart that felt like it was going to burst, Y/N ran and ran and ran. There were only a few more blocks until she would be able to see her lover and apologize face-to-face and tell him how much she loved and supported him. The finish line was right there, but the universe must have wanted to take revenge on her for her nasty attitude towards the person who only wished her the best and cared for her the most.
Just as Y/N sprinted across the crosswalk, a motorcycle headed her way at full speed. Not only did it jam into her side and break her ribs, but it continued to run towards her body that flew a couple of tens of feet away and ran over her back. Without looking back, the motorcyclist continued to ride down the road. Fortunately, he was convicted of third-degree murder.
On the other hand, Y/N was laying face down on the cement of the road with her breathing becoming pattered and inconsistent. Her bones were shattered, and her organs were punctured, but nothing hurt more than hearing the terrified scream and call for help from Jay who had found her on his nightly run.]
Y/N dropped her ice cream cone and felt like throwing up. The horrifying memory sent her into a panic as she clutched her head with her hands. She felt like screaming and crying, but she desperately tried to contain herself. Her breathing became quick and short. She could feel herself shaking.
"Y/N?" A masculine voice immediately brought comfort to her, but at the same time, it released the tears welling up in her eyes. With a choked sob, Y/N stood up and rushed to hug Jay.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." she repeated into his shoulder. She cried her heart out and stained his jacket with her tears.
"I'm guessing you remember me now?" Jay lightly joked. He pulled her in closer to him and tucked her head into his neck with his hand on the back of her head. "I'm so sorry for all the pain I caused you." He kissed the top of her head. "I'm so sorry." His voice gradually turned into a whisper. Jay could feel his own eyes watering until the hot streams of liquid fell down his cold cheeks. He kissed her head over and over until it caused her to look up at him.
With tear stained faces, they looked into each others eyes and cried. She was in the arms of her first love, and he held the person he loved the most close to him. As if it were an instinct, the two leaned in and softly pushed their lips together. All of the memories came flooding back to her. All of the memories of her dates with Jay, all of the times he came to her house to sing her to sleep, all of the times he would cook and bake for her, and all of the times he would tell her that he loved her. They were finally back to their respective safe spaces.
Hwang Y/N was 21 years old when she fell in love with Park Jongseong for the second time.
