I know a sort of common opinion is that Ephraim taking down Renvall with just a couple of dudes is criticized as bad writing or him being a Gary Stu or whatever; I used to have that opinion when I was younger, in fact.

Nowadays, not only do I think it's cool as fuck, but it's also just a testament to how much of a force Ephraim is. He's significantly intelligent and has tremendous martial prowess. His fatal flaw is his singlemindedness, mostly in regards to how he's extremely unaware how his actions can affect how people feel about him or trust his leadership. But when used in a positive manner, it manifests as unlimited willpower and determination. For example, Ephraim gets the upper hand on Valter because he recognizes that Valter is used to people worrying about having to avoid his pursuits. But sadistic madness doesn't do anything to a guy who plain just doesn't give a fuck.

Ephraim's game is that he plays on the limits of most regular people's intelligence, and outsmarts and overcomes them because he backs up incredibly risky plays with his immense skill and unfettered confidence. That's why he succeeds in his battles, yet also why he comes up short when dealing with matters of diplomacy, royal obligation, and emotional matters. You can't gambit or bravado your way out of your people starting to resent your tendencies to slip away and play merc or when your best friend is lashing out his feelings of inadequacy due to being influenced by darkness.
