“Um.. Sir Dheginsea? Could we maybe talk?”
With a pensive expression not befitting the normally cheerful bard, Nils lightly tapped the black dragon on the shoulder after spotting him in the crowd.
He’s been holding this off for some time now, but it felt wrong to not resolve things after how messy their previous encounter was. Their relationship had been only positive up until that point and though Nils realized he was just emotionally overwhelmed at that time, that didn’t make it right.
“I’d like to say I’m sorry, first of all. From running away from our conversation like that. I just panicked and, I…” The boy trailed off. He knew he had to say it, but that didn’t make it any easier. So he took a deep breath to try and relax. His gaze remained on the ground, pale hands trembling slightly.
Sighing, he finally spoke after a beat of silence. “I’d like to tell you what you wanted to know. …if that’s still alright with you, sir.”
Dheginsea had not expected for Nils to ever approach him again after he had stormed off from their previous conversation. He had wanted to press the issue then, gone as far as to attempt to follow Nils after his outburst. But, in the end, after having failed to locate the boy, Dheginsea had left the issue as it was. Thinking it best that he not try to push it further if Nils was willing to hide from him.
So the old dragon is more than a little surprised to find him as he turned around. For the boy to have sought him, to have tapped him on the shoulder and be willing to talk to him again.
Rather than potentially risk saying the wrong thing and set the boy off again, Dheginsea patiently waited. Listened as Nils sheepishly apologized, staying quiet as he once again couldn’t help but think that there was something wrong with Nils. For him to have panicked and admit so. For Nils to be nervous even as he wished to tell him now his answer. It concerned Dheginsea slightly as to what that answer might be..
After a few moments of silence, Dheginsea gave a slight nod. And though Nils avoided looking up at him, Dheginsea kept his face neutral, so as to not frighten the boy again should he meet his gaze at any point. “I’m listening...”

mouse's attempted B;APO timeline
aka i was writing an irrelevant detail in a silly little fic and it occurred to me that oh wait i could actually think about this!!
credit where credit's due - i am using this timeline right here (from @hearmyvoicee) as a base, but i have some particular thoughts/interpretations of my own + felt like using 2001 dates! (bc why not, ya know? keep it basically of the time it opened) so this whole thing is mostly for my own reference, but if it makes sense to any of y'all as well? great <;3 [keeping it under the cut for my own sanity + yours]
.✨.
Sunday, January 7 [the feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th, or the closest Sunday to that date - in the case of 2001, that's the 7th]
Epiphany
Monday - Friday, January 8 - 12 [ i swear on my life someone mentioned to me once that it's generally accepted that You & I spans several days?? i cannot find who or where but someone tell me i'm not going insane ]
You & I
Friday, January 12 [the friday is entirely arbitrary, just seems the type of day you'd hold auditions - give it a week to stir interest, cast on friday, start up your rehearsals from the next monday onwards] [i have never been in theater though, so don't hold me to that]
Role Of A Lifetime
Auditions
Plain Jane Fatass
Thursday, February 22 [to me the phrase "we'll meet in Tanya's room on Friday night" implies that it's not yet Friday + in theory the song takes place during study hall, so an actual weekday? so to that end it could be any day monday-thursday, the specifics not mattering in particular, but i arbitrarily went with thursday so that Ivy’s birthday lines up right]
Wonderland
Friday, February 23
A Quiet Night At Home
Rolling
Best Kept Secret
Wednesday, February 28 [borrowing from the previous timeline for this one - the Lent + Ash Wednesday significance makes sense] [to that end, Ash Wednesday 2001 was in fact February 28th]
Confession
Portrait Of A Girl
Thursday, March 1 [in Wonderland they reference the fact that "Ivy's birthday's in a week", ergo wonderland date + 1 week]
Birthday, Bitch!
One Kiss
Are You There?
911! Emergency!
Friday, March 2 [peter mentions 911! Emergency as being "last night"]
Reputation Stain'd
Ever After
Saturday, March 10 [generally, the Spring Break week is from March 11 to March 17, so in my head it makes sense for them to be leaving for their spring break the day beforehand - ergo, March 10th]
Spring
One
✨ spring break / intermission ✨
Sunday, March 17 [the sunday makes sense in my head to mirror Epiphany]
Wedding Bells
Monday, March 19
In The Hallway
Monday, March 26 [ as claire says - "gone a week, i miss you already". so if classes started again on the 19th + 1 week is the 26th ]
Touch My Soul
See Me
Warning
[sidenote, easter 2001 was sunday april 15. to that end, to account for the Easter Monday holiday, likely they had the 16th off also]
Friday, May 18 [okay listen!! i know it crowds A LOT of act 2 together but!! the way sister chantelle says here "if you decide you want to get together one more time" implies to me that they aren't going to be having more Official rehearsal time before the play actually gets performed] [it all has to occur between monday may 14 & sunday may 20 for jason's "graduate next sunday" line to be technically correct] [rory's decided that they'll "meet back here. seven o'clock" - which i was always under the impression is the supposed to be rehearsal that sets up Promise] [Nadia's "call me tonight, or tomorrow, or whenever" to me implies that she won't see him tomorrow? so probably they don't have any classes or rehearsal the next day]["i know it's late" in Cross is such a little detail, but to me it just ties it all up]
Pilgrim's Hands
God Don't Make No Trash
All Grown Up
Promise
Once Upon A Time
Cross
Saturday, May 19 [saturday night seems a reasonable time to put on the show, right? like in order to make it accessible to family + friends outside of the school?]
Two Households
Bare
Queen Mab
A Glooming Peace
Tuesday, May 22 [a {catholic} person is buried between 2 and 7 days after their death, typically around 3. i always got the vibes that Absolution was supposed to take place on/around jason's funeral, ergo the play + 3 days]
Absolution
Sunday, May 27 [going with the assumption that they graduate on the last sunday in may, in 2001 that date was the 27th]
No Voice
.✨.
wanna make it super clear that i a) am australian and b) am not catholic and c) have never been to boarding school or in theater so a lot of dates were found via google search, and/or arbitrarily assigned weekdays
also also at the end of the day i'm not sure the specifics of the timeline super duper matter, it was mostly just for fun - but like. feel free to share ur thoughts!

Grateful Dead Monthly: Shea’s Theater – Buffalo, NY 1/20/79
On Saturday, January 20, 1979, the Grateful Dead played a show at Shea’s Theater in Buffalo, New York.
Shea’s Buffalo, as it was known (it’s now Shea’s Performing Arts Center), was a jazz-age movie palace that opened in 1926. The theater was designed by Rapp & Rapp, the architect firm that designed many similar theaters in Chicago, including the shuttered Uptown, which hosted the Dead eighteen times between 1978 and 1981. According to Wikipedia, Shea’s interior was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the furnishings and fixtures, including the Czech crystal chandeliers, were supplied by Marshall Field. The interior contained over an acre of seating, and the cost of the project was nearly $2 million.
Shea’s fell into disrepair in the 1960s and 1970s and eventually closed. A judge blocked then-owner Lowes Corporation from removing the fixtures, while a group called Friends of Buffalo finalized a restoration plan. The theater reopened in in the late-70s, shortly before the Dead arrived.
In 1978, the band was in disarray. Dennis McNally, in his essential A Long Strange Trip, mentioned “emotional problems” at that time, among which was the deteriorating relationship between Keith and Donna Godchaux and their relationship with their bandmates. Substance abuse was a factor, and spousal abuse (by both parties) was, as well. The problems continued into the next year. On the night of the Buffalo show, Donna left the band. Keith stayed on. According to McNally, the Godchauxs and the Dead officially parted ways in February.
LMA reviewer johnmm1959 disputes that, and offers some insight into Donna’s absence:
“This was quite a show in quite a place. Uncharacteristically, they started about an hour late. I was getting concerned because I was really taking flight when the thought occured to me that there might be a problem, like in New Haven the previous November. I found out later through a reliable source that Jerry had the job of telling Donna and Keith that they were done. Contrary to what was written in ‘Long Strange Trip,’ Donna headed home, and Keith hung on for the remaining shows. Jerry was found meandering the hotel lobby minutes before the show was to begin. (A combination of being upset and under the infulence of his choice at the time.) It took the band a few songs to find their stride and the show provided enough ‘moments’ to be considered a keeper.”
LMA reviewer jsunsh adds, “I was there and the vibe was strange – an hour late in starting – no Donna – and no idea of the tension in the band.”
That tension showed in the music. At least at first. ECM’s take? “1st Set = Unspectacular. 2nd Set = Unspectacular until Estimated, then full psychedelic Other One > Drums > Other One > Dark Star. Sick, sick, sick.”
This Dark Star was only one of two in ’79 (1/10 featured Donna), and then it was shelved for two years. LMA reviewer jjjbaggins calls this show “an important artifact” because of the late second set DS: “Only two Dark Stars all year, … and this one, while short, is thoughtful and deep. It comes out of a beautiful post-drums noodle … and climbs into a rockin’ NFA (although it seems Jerry wanted to explore it further).”
LMA reviewer Brownie1960, in a long, rambling post about his psychedelic experience, talks about being the guy screaming before Estimated Prophet:
“Let me add some context. I didn’t know a lot about the GD at the time, and the first set had already been a life changing experience for me. I was three or four rows back from the column of speakers on the right hand side of the stage. I was hanging on to the seat in front of me for dear life during Sugaree. It felt as if all the water from all the rivers on earth were washing through me all at once. If I would have let go, I don’t know where I would have ended up…. I remember nothing about intermission or Miracle Bertha Good Lovin’. Loser started all the water from all the rivers of the earth running through me again. During the interval between that and Estimated Prophet, I had a pretty lucid moment. I kept hearing all of these people calling out song names…. So after I heard a person call out a song title, I screamed at the top of my lungs, ‘ANYTHING BUT THAT,’ like it would somehow harm me if the band actually played that song. I also remember screaming for them to ‘PLAY SOMETHING WEIRD,’ but I don’t think it made any of the tapes. I do remember it was kind of like white light from the sun when Dark Star started. I was sure there were streamers released from the ceiling during this, but nobody else saw them. I sort of went back to my normal life after this, although it never was the same again.”
That brings us to ECM’s friend Rick Koh. If you’re a regular here, and read the Cornell post, you might remember that Rick attended 5/8/77. He quipped, “How could it be the best show ever if they didn’t play Dark Star?” Rick was also at 9/3/77 and 1/20/79. In an email to Ed, Rick rated the latter, this show, as the best of those three: “I know it is not a renowned show but it stands (out in my memory) as a one of my favorite shows [I] ever attended – maybe because Donna wasn’t there, or because it was full of friends, as I was attending University of Buffalo at the time.” And he told a story about “calling” Dark Star, by, basically, yelling at bassist Phil Lesh. As Rick recalled in that email, he got “to the second row aisle where I had an epiphany that Phil wanted me to call him to play Dark Star … and they did. My yelling is confirmed on some aud tapes.”
Last week, I heard the story from the man himself. What a treat. At the end of a long and fun convo, he labeled this one, “just a great show.” Listen for yourself (and let me know if you can hear him) …
Transport to the Charlie Miller remaster of the Jerry Moore audience recording HERE.
And here‘s a post about this show from Grateful Dead of the Day.
Thanks, Rick. And thanks, as always, Ed.
More soon.

“ yo! big mustache man! over here! ”
fogado waves before running over to the huge figure nearby, keeping something close to him by his side. since returning from the city, he’s been thinking about how best to distribute spoils—griss had taken a lot of the good stuff, so all he’s got are things he might use and things he can’t use. not a good spread.
he has seen this huge man walking around on occasion, however, and his figure gives him the striking feeling that he could punch really well if he thought about it.
so.
“ hey! you punch things? ” great opener. fogado looks at his hands and is surprised at how worn down they look. “ whuf! nevermind, don’t answer that. here, lemme get you some bandages and stuff… ooh, actually, wait, hang on— ”
the thing he’s been hiding turns out to be a pair of gauntlets, but inside of those gauntlets? a nail care kit. whoever owned these last used them as an ironic storage receptacle, apparently. fogado pulls out clippers and a file. “ howzabout i fix those puppies up, huh? ”
A brow of his arched up at the way the young man had approached him. Though certainly..odd, Dheginsea wasn’t about to object to Star-eyes offer, not when any regular aid or healing would do little to bring the sharpness of his claws back.
Besides, from the absurd case the nail care kit was housed in, to, stranger still, the faint draconic power he could sense imbued within the tools. This was the least strangest thing Dheginsea had encountered so far since the fall of Garreg Mach.
And though not his name, ‘Big Moustache Man’ was better than ‘Baldy’, for a start.
“I would not be opposed.” Dheginsea extends one of his hands out, ready for this young man to begin fixing them. “However, might I keep it after you’re done?” He asked. “I’m afraid what you do as I am now, will only fix so much.” The rest would need to be done once transformed for his claws to be properly brought back to fighting shape, and this bunker… it isn’t nearly spacious enough.

“. . .” If Dheginsea could be frank for a moment, he had expected something more.. dramatic. Extreme and.. profane. Regardless, it is his mistake for thinking the boys magic were not of his own powers
He should have known better, as every dragon clan was proficient at different things. Red, White, Black, and those that were lost to the flood. It’s what makes them unique as a greater dragon tribe. Their culture vibrant.
Then again, such efficient use of their magic outside of their other form and with such power… it was something he could not have predicted to be.. natural.
But, Dragon stones… Why... Why was that necessarily?
Dragon stones, a prototype of what had started to be developed then abandoned, are crystals which were meant to prolong the transformation of a dragon. A means to store spare energy that could then be used to keep them at a near invincible state. To reduce losses should the war have reached their boarder…
Not make a thing to make them dependant on…
Closing his eyes for a moment, Dheginsea folded his arms over his chest. His brows pinched, forming a deep line between them.
Dheginsea couldn’t ever imagine tying his own powers into a crystal that can so easily be lost or destroyed. But for such a thing to be possible. To pour what makes someone a Laguz into a crystal..
To tie that into their survival. . .
Dheginsea wanted to know more
“Nils... Allow me apologize for assuming the magic that you wielded was not your own..” Dheginsea began with, for he’s not blind to see that what the boy had told him was painful, and a part of him wanted to make it less so but-
“However, Why? Why do dragons were your from need to crystallize their powers into a stone to survive?” Dheginsea spoke next with all the seriousness a commander would their soldier, his eyes fierce. The lines on his face sharp and rigid.

“I see... There's no need to apologize. Had I known…” Dheginsea stopped, then looked away from the boy. Had he known.. much too late for that now. His heart goes out to Nils, to what he has lost and experienced. But, there were some things that he found easier to believe than others.
Hate, war, the demonization and sought after destruction and total annihilation of other people.. These are unfortunately not new things to Dheginsea. Worst yet, he’s not surprised by them either during the boy's tale. Having observed from afar what had occurred not 70 years after the founding of the Kingdom of Begnion took place.. and what had followed…  What had become of the lie they had spread to keep the peace at the time. A lie he had stubbornly stuck to.. and others paid gravelly for…
But for Dragons to the target.. Dheginsea couldn't help but think that Elibe served as an ironic mirror of what could have gone wrong had he not gathered what remained of the dragon tribes, and isolated his nation from the world.
Silently, Dheginsea moved next to Nils, to join him by the wall. Though, instead of sitting down, he merely leaned his back against it, his arms still crossed.
When he had first met Nils, there had been a small part of him that had hoped that things were different. Better than they were in Tellius. Having thought of him as a Branded at that party, when he had not met others of the Parentless at the time, Dheginsea had wondered then if, perhaps, there could had been another way if people had known.. should they have told the truth…
But now he knows. Elibe is worse than Tellius. Not just for those of his tribe, but no doubt for the branded as well.
“I do not say this to discredit what you have told me," Dheginsea started with, for though he believed in those painful part of the boy's story, he has a difficult time.. accepting others. Notably- "However, you cannot be more than three hundred and forty six years old, at most…”
“Um.. Sir Dheginsea? Could we maybe talk?”
