“Dear Bob Newby, Hawkins superhero.”

You were already getting choked up, but knew you had to push through.

“It’s only been two months since everything happened. Since Will’s episodes, they stopped by the way. Since you were at the lab, since the demo dogs, Dustin named them, since those creatures invaded the lab. Two months since you… anyway. Um… I’m still working at Radio Shack even though every day I step through those doors, I want to run back home. It doesn’t feel the same with you gone, besides I don’t have as much knowledge as you did.”

Your thumbs swiped over the black ink scrawled on the lined paper.

“Well, um in other news, Jonathan and I both have relationships. I’m not gonna go into it, but just wanted to let you know, we’re doing okay. But uh, mom, she’s uh… she says she’s fine, but I know she’s lying a bit. I hear her weeping at night, times when nightmares won’t get off my back and I head to the backyard for fresh air, I pass her room and faintly I hear the sniffles and occasional wet hiccup. It breaks my heart, ‘cause she deserved happiness, and you gave her that peace. I know she seemed hesitant at times, but she did love you, she loved the comfort you brought to our home. It was a nice change for once, no screaming or crying out of fear, but laughter and warmth. And I know Jonathan kinda seemed… guarded or just- what I’m saying is he’s just not used to trusting male figures, he’s- we’re all protective of our mom.”

You thought back to this morning, telling her you were gonna visit the cemetery. Asking if she would want to come with, seeing the hesitation in her eyes and body, how she stuttered out an excuse. She’s probably at work or just at home, sitting in the living room or laying in bed.

“I know you would want her to be happy though, want all of us to be happy. I hope she’ll get to be happy again, she was sad for too long and I don’t want to see her go through that again.”

The wind whistled through the trees, leaves waving in the background.

“I should… I should head back. I’ll try and see if she can come next time.”

You picked up your paper and tightened your scarf along your next, the bruising completely gone now. Loose strands of hair were played with the wind as you stood, taking a quick look around the quiet grounds.

With a hand placed atop the hard stone, a quiet “happy new year” goodbye, you left the ghostly grounds.

A nightmare.

A nightmare where Steve died at the hands of Billy. Every time you tried to intervene some force would hold you back, making you watch with leaking eyes and snot leaving your nostrils. And just before Billy makes his final blow, Steve would look your way, battered and bloodied face, but you can still make out his loving gaze and the faint hint of a smile on his lips. Then you just stared as the light left his eyes, then Billy would make his way to you, and you awoke before it got any further, but you got the gist.

Steve didn’t spend the night that day, so you weren’t saved by his warmth and comfort or an arm thrown over your waist as you buried your face into his neck. You were only greeted by the dark and coldness of your quiet room, shadows making you jumpy. 

So you felt the shrinking room behind, wanting to call Steve, but you didn’t want to bother him especially since your relationship was still known. So instead of calling Steve you’ll just head outside and smoke something, hoping that will quell the nerves firing from your brain.

As you made your way down the dark hallway, you heard it again.

You heard the quiet sniffles, the moans of pain. She was crying again. And you hesitated outside her door, wondering if you should enter, but you both need comfort tonight if no one else can give it to you.

With a slow turning of the silver knob you pushed the wood door inch by inch, trying to stop the creaking from growing too loud. Her room was dark except for a small lamp on her bedside table, only shining Joyce in the yellow glow.

“Mom,” you whispered into the quiet night.

You saw as she tried to fix her appearance, wiping away any traces of tears, running a tissue under her nose, tucking her bangs behind her ears even though they slipped back into place. You took a step at a time, door closing behind you and leaving the both of you in a moment of privacy.

“Hi honey. Are you okay?” You could hear the rough edge in her voice.

You knew she would push you away if you mentioned anything about her, it’s something almost everyone in the Byers picked up from her, always putting others before yourself. So instead of coming to her as a friend, a shoulder to cry on, you went to her as a daughter, someone in need of comforting.

“I… I had a nightmare… about Steve, but I don’t want to bother him.” You wrung your hands together.

She held her arms out and open, “come here, baby.” And you walked to her bed before crawling into her arms and resting your head against her chest, her arms wrapping around your shoulders in a firm hold.

“I’m here, baby. I’ll always be here for you.” A soothing stroke to your hair.

“I’ll always be here for you too, mommy.” You whispered into her clavicle.

Sodo on Duty

Why him, Sodo wondered? But he knew the answer. Because he was in charge when Papa and Aether were away. Because Swiss, Rain, and Petrichor were all conveniently missing. Because Mountain and the ghoulettes had already gone to sleep. He was the only ghoul for the job, but arguably the least suited for it. He certainly wasn't opposed to offering Ardis his companionship for the evening in Aether's absence, but he felt ill-equipped to do it. They were hardly close.

The phone call had come in just after 10pm. Papa and Aether's meeting with the audio engineer a few towns over had run much later than they expected, they told Sodo, and they wanted Ardis to know they'd be a while. They'd also asked Sodo to keep her company until they got back, if he wouldn't mind. He'd agreed, of course – he was a night owl, and planned on staying up for another few hours anyway – but now he felt a bit awkward. Thinking about it, he couldn't remember having ever spent time with her one-on-one before.

Sodo found the angel in the kitchen finishing off a glass of water. Not wanting to startle her, he knocked on the door frame before speaking. "Ardis?"

She turned to face him. "Oh, hi, Sodo," she greeted him politely. "What's up?"

"Papa called," he informed her as he stepped into the room. "They've been delayed. He and Aether won't be back for another two hours or so."

He watched her smile fade. "Ah, okay. Thanks for the heads up." She was always easy to read. It was no secret that she loved those men, and she clearly missed them even though they'd only left that afternoon.

"You're more than welcome to join me while you wait for them to return," he offered as he'd been instructed. "I'm just watching TV in the den."

Ardis smiled again. "That would be nice. Thank you." She followed him back to the den, grateful for the company. They entered the room and Sodo returned to his spot on the couch, motioning for Ardis to join him. The TV was still on from earlier. She took her seat and immediately snuggled into his side as if it were the most natural thing in the world. It startled Sodo for a moment, but he made himself relax and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. He'd forgotten how affectionate she was. It's not that he was opposed to it, but rather that he wasn't used to it. He rarely gave or received affection outside of what was choreographed on stage. Sure, he and Aether might share a spontaneous one-armed hug from time to time, but nothing like this.

"What are we watching?" she asked, looking up at him with a little smile on her face. She turned off her halo and wings so they wouldn't glow too brightly in the dim room.

"It's one of those American shows," he answered, having regained his composure. "Kitchen Nightmares – that, eh, Gordon Ramsay thing, with all the terrible restaurants. Have you ever seen it?"

"I don't think so," she answered as she turned her attention to the screen.

"I think you'll find it amusing," Sodo said with a smile. "He tries to come in and fix these failing businesses, but the owners are always incompetent."

They watched together in near silence, only occasionally laughing or murmuring in response to what happened in the show. Sodo's heart couldn't help but melt a bit every time she giggled. Occasionally she would let out a little yawn and nuzzle herself further into his side. She was so cute. He'd never realized it before, but he supposed she was rather fond of him. He'd been keeping a polite distance for the past few months – there was no reason to intrude on her time with Aether. However, she seemed to like and trust him just as much as any of the other ghouls.

A couple of episodes in, a dim glimmer of light beside him caught his attention. Glancing to the side, he caught Ardis's halo ever so slightly flickering back on before vanishing again. When he looked down at her, he saw why.

She'd fallen asleep.

Sodo felt his pulse quicken. What was he supposed to do? Wake her up? No, that seemed rude. It was best to let her sleep. She was clearly rather comfortable. How long had she been asleep? He would do his best to keep still so he wouldn't disturb her. She was using him as a pillow, after all. It was as if a kitten had dozed off in his lap. She was so small, even compared to him. He had a few inches and quite a few pounds on her. Why did he want to kiss her forehead? He wouldn't, of course – that might wake her up – but it alarmed him that he wanted to at all. He wasn't the cuddly, kissy, lovey-dovey type. That was Papa, Aether, Swiss, the ghoulettes... just about anyone other than him, actually. He was stoic. That was his thing.

His mind quickly cycled through various emotions – annoyance, confusion, anxiety – before eventually landing on adoration. This was incredibly sweet, he admitted to himself with an air of defeat. Her fluffy hair felt soft against his cheek as he let himself gently rest his head against hers. He felt flattered, in a sense, that she felt safe enough around him to fall asleep. Maybe he should try to spend more time with her. Aether and Papa were wrapped around her finger, after all, and she seemed like a sweet girl. Speaking of Aether and Papa, he imagined they'd be home soon. He was content to let her rest there with her head on his shoulder for as long as they took.

i know that the shot of will laying his head against hannibal’s chest in twotl is one of the most iconic images of the show but like…. sometimes i think of it and it takes my breath away bc it’s one of the only times that will seeks physical touch from someone beyond touching a hand and bc i think laying your head on someone’s chest is one of the most tender and romantic things that you can do. it’s pure intimacy, and they really gave of us that between two men on cable television in 2015. it flies in the face of generally socially accepted ways for men to touch each other in american culture, and i know we rage against there being no kiss, but that’s bc to us as lgbtq people it’s obvious what’s between them, but i think it was radical in a way. a kiss would have been a distraction to the general public viewers bc all they’d be able to think about is the fact that it’s two men kissing. but will laying his head on hannibal’s chest, peaceful at last….. that is everything bc hannibal is his everything now, all else has been stripped away, and for the first time, in the entire show will rests without guilt in the only place that can offer it to him. not to go all “their relationship is something deeper than romance and sex” but like it really is. obv i’m of the belief that romance and sex is part of their relationship, but that would be nothing without the simple yet heart wrenching core of it — that they are the only ones who understand and see each other truly for what they are and they are the only ones who can change each other until they fit together perfectly. they made a place for each other there in each other, and the embrace is the physical representation of it. nothing fits like a head against a shoulder or an arm around the waist

no no no bc will asking hannibal, “how do you see me?” in episode one is so insane bc he wouldn’t have asked just anybody that. he was not inviting the scrutiny of anyone and i mean anyone. he didn’t want people to perceive him. the way he dresses, his glasses, his biting wit, his teacher persona… they’re all methods of self-protection to keep people from looking too closely. but he asks hannibal what he sees bc he really wants to know, and hannibal, who he has just met, doesn’t even hesitate to tell will something that no one else ever has before. something dangerous, something powerful said with admiration. with a smile.
