Kerala Flood: What to learn from Japan!!
Kerala Flood: What Kerala & India have to learn from Japan
In the recent Kerala flood , the death toll neared 400 when I was writing this article. No doubt, people of kerala, specially the youth, used their best skills on social media and ground ,proved themselves that they are responsible citizens. The more interesting one was, people who were branded as useless for the society , became more useful in the rescue operations.
Tumblr media
In the recent flood in Western Japan, 200 people became victims to the fury in the midst of worst weather disaster in 36 years of Japan history.  Since July, intense heat and  water shortages raised alarm for the outbreak of diseases.  People living on mountain slopes and flood plains , numbering 269,672 households has no access to water.  When there is less access to drinking water, then there is less fluid in the body and chances of more heart strokes. Moreover, people are already under stress and depression. There was no grudge or complaint for the people living in relief camps , in stead , they found solutions by themselves. There were only a few portable fans at the evacuation centers, but they tried to cool themselves with paper fans.  Since Japanese are good like skills, their wisdom work at problem solving.
In Kerala, most of the affected areas are plain except some hills and slopes in a few districts whereas most of the Western Japan have hills and slopes and mostly  devastated areas in the recent flood were provinces like Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime.  In Kerala, more than 10,00,000 people took shelter in the relief camp whereas in Western Japan,  the people living in relief camp reduced to just 7000 only within a week time. About 400 homes were damaged and 10,000 homes were flooded . In Kerala , it is yet to ascertain the extend of damage and flooded homes.
In the Western Japan, electricity supplies were cut off at about 51,000 homes in six prefecture and one should remember that only in Hiroshima, the population goes more than 12 lakhs.  In Japan ferrying supplies to convenient stores and retailers were treated as emergency vehicles. In Kerala, the cargoes got piled up awaiting customs clearance for many days.
The flood situation in Kerala worsened when the Idukki Hydel Project opened the five gates and lifted the shutters of over two dozen dams under the pressure of unprecedented downpour after 1923.  Lots of encroachments across the banks of many rivers also became a huge hindrance for the crisis management.  And many new houses have come in these areas and also flourishing of agriculture activities  adding more problems in the list for the disaster management. Land mafias have been swallowing the beauty  of Kerala, gradually since last several decades under the nose of politicians, bureaucrats and the government.  Kerala and India have to learn from the disaster management technology of Japan, a disaster= prone nation saved  5000 villagers from flooding in Indonesia. India has a long standing relation with Japan and India is yet to explore and gain more skills from Japan in the area of disaster management. In the case of disaster, Japanese handle the situation with a sense of emergency and they play a very important roles in protecting the lives of civilians.
No doubt, the youth of Kerala did a wonderful job and took challenges in their hands and solved the puzzles .  They really used their swimming ,rappelling , and diving skills  in saving people’s lives and many youth explored new avenues through social media and digital process to monitor food and location management.  The Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Kerala with their team tried to do their best and the best thing happened in Kerala was the unity of the people living in Kerala ,outside the states and international Indians and a lesson for Indians that not to repeat the mistakes happened in Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir.  My gratitude also goes to my elder brother’s family members , Sujit P. S. and Anup Aravind Menon for having sleepless nights in helping the  people in the relief camps in Eranakulam area.
(Below photo contributed by Mr. Sujith P.S.Volunteer from the relief camp,Samooham High School, North Paravur  in Eranakulam District)
Tumblr media
No doubt , Japan is the world leader in readiness and in many Japanese schools, the  first day of the class and celebrations include evacuation drills. Japan has the world’s  most sophisticated disaster prior warning system.  Private and public organizations organize emergency drills and transport stranded commuters from their offices to their homes.
Let  Kerala: God’s Own Country get blessed by the nature again and become the Beauty  Icon of the world. Let the Land of Snakes, Land of Religions, Land of scholars, Land of Ayurveda,Land of Spices,  Land of Education , & Land of culture become a giant institution for humanity and value system.

#HappyOnam . . . . . Onam is the annual harvest festival of Kerala and is celebrated for 10 days. According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. The most important day is the 10th day, known as Thiruvonam when people invite King Mahabali to their homes. This year it's on 31st August. On this day people wear new dresses, decorate their houses with Pookkalams (flower rangolis), exchange gifts, and prepare the traditional meal, which is known as sadhya. Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam, Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women's dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and other celebrations. St.Francis Church
St. Francis Church is located in Kochi, Kerala, one of the beautiful states of Southern India. It is the oldest European church in India. Built way back in 1503, St. Francis Church is the testimony to the Christian history in India. Vasco da Gama, one of the famous explorers, died in Kochi and his body was buried in this church but later on his body was taken back to his country, Portugal.
History
St.Francis Church
The history of this Church reflects the colonial struggle of European powers in India, from the 15th to 20th Centuries. The Portuguese Vasco da Gama was the first European to discover the sea route to India. In 1503 Alphonso Alburquerque was given permission by the Rajah of Cochin to build a fort at the mouth of the river. Within the Fort they erected a church of wood, which was dedicated to St. Bartholomew. A new Church was completed in 1516 and dedicated to St. Antony.
The Church remained in the Order of St. Francis until the arrival of the Dutch in 1663. They demolished all the convents and churches of the place, except the Church of the Franciscans, which they reconditioned and converted into their Government Church.
Architecture
On the northern side can be seen Portuguese gravestones. The Dutch gravestones are on the southern wall. The Vasco da Gama stone is on the ground at the southern side. The Church became a protected monument in April 1923 under the Protected Monuments Act of 1904. The Cenotaph in memory of the residents of Cochin who fell in the First Great War was erected in 1920.
Atttraction
Original grave of Vasco da Gama
The famous Portuguese trader Vasco da Gamais well known for reaching India from Europe by sea instead of by the usual overland route. He fell ill and then died in Kochi, and was buried in the St. Francis Church there. Later his remains were eventually taken back to Portugal. In spite of that, his burial spot inside the church has been clearly marked out and many people still visit this church to see this marked spot.
Timings
The Sunday service is at 0800 hrs, except the 3rd Sunday of each month. Opens from sunrise – sunset. The Santa Cruz Cathedral close to St. Francis Church was completed in 1904, which has some attractive paintings.
How To Get There
By Air Airport at Kochi is Nedumbassery International airport which is about 20 km away from Kochi. Taxi charge from Nedumbassery to Kochi is about Rs 300. This airport is well connected to all airports in India and also to many cities in abroad, including gulf countries and Singapore.
By Train Kochi has three important railheads, namely, Harbour Terminus on Willingdon Island, Ernakulam town and Ernakulam Junction. Ernakulam Junction is well connected to all cities in India. There are frequent rail services between Harbor Terminus to Junction.
Nearest Railway Stations Eranakulam Junction (ERS) – 4 km Ernakulam Town (ERN) – 6 km
By Bus Kochi is well connected by bus services. KSRTC connects Koch with all major cities in Kerala and with many cities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
