CATS U.S. Tour 6 (02/04/23)

My thoughts on the show I saw yesterday! I was supposed to see the show last weekend as well, but I was unable to go, so I can't really talk about that one here.

Before I get into the meat of the post, I just want to talk about...guest ettiquette? These were the best seats I've ever gotten for a show at this theatre, but I missed part of the Gumbie Tap and almost the entirety of Sillabub's "Moment's of Happiness" solo because someone had to crawl past me to get to their seat. It's really a good thing I decided not to break the "no recording" rule, or I would've been caught by the usher's who were shining lights down the aisle for all the late people...

Now on to the interesting stuff! I didn't catch as many background moments this time as last, as I mainly focused on each character as they were having their moment (and of course, I couldn't help but be excited about Sillabub).

I saw Hank Santos as Tugger, and his energy was everything I want from a Tugger performance. He seemed the most comfortable with his fellow castmates, and he had little moments with almost all the Queens. He danced with Demeter during his own number (Tuggmeter lovers will enjoy their little moments!), he danced with Bombalurina during his number and they were paired together for the Jellicle Ball. He talked Cassandra's ear off during someone else's number, and he even danced with Victoria at one point! At the opening of his own number, he poked Munkustrap in the stomach and laughed when he doubled over, which is a total bro move. He also swung at Alonzo after the "terrible bore" line. Oh! And during the last bows, Hank and Tayler did a neat little handshake that I'm pretty sure someone caught on camera. Overall, I really love Hank as Tugger. My aunt told him he was her favorite Tugger, and he gave her a little paw bump. I could say more about his performance and I probably will, but seeing it yourself will be better than anything I can describe here.

Nora was Demeter, and I was very torn on how I felt about their performance. I like to be open-minded and not compare every performer to the last, but that's easier said than done. Their energy and vibe were perfect, but they have a very unique voice that takes just a little getting used to. I loved their moments with Hank as Tugger. Nora and Erica were super close and had the perfect Bomba/Deme thing going, and I absolutely loved them together. Nora was an awesome Demeter.

Erica was Bombalurina, and she might just be a favorite of mine. She also has a very unique voice, but it's very Bomba. She definitely has the right vibe going, and I absolutely adore how closely she stuck to Nora. Her performance very much reminded me of Rosemarie Ford's, and I think that's why I liked it so much.

I can say without a doubt that Sam Bello is the best Sillabub I have seen live. Her voice was angelic, clear, pure, and literally everything I could possibly want from a Sillabub performance. Every time she sang I would almost cry her voice was so beautiful. She's definitely up there with Helen Massey as a favorite Sillabub voice for me. She was such a little kitten, and I very much got the idea that she's the one troublemaker who pesters the older kittens and sometimes gets into little spats with them. Skimbleshanks was very protective over her when Grizabella came onstage, and she was usually found hanging out with (or pestering) Pouncival and Victoria. During Skimbleshank's number, rather than appearing that they're just horsing around, it feels more like Silla and Vicci got into a little tiff and Skimble had to break them up. Oh, and please, for the love of all things Jellicle, if you go to a show and have the chance to see Sam as Silla, please get audio for your friend Indy. I would appreciate it.

I saw Taryn as Rumpleteazer! She is the most adorable 'Teazer, and super nice if you get to meet her. She actually stopped to take a photo with us on a very busy two-show day, and I'll never forget how friendly she was.

I got to see Ibn play Misto. He was probably the cutest Misto I've ever seen, and he and Hank switch off when it comes to wanting to be the center of attention at all times. Their Tugger and Misto are absolutely obsessed with each other (like every Tugger/Misto should be), and Tuggoffelees shippers are really gonna enjoy that. Ibn was also super friendly and took a photo with us, was the most chill guy.

I can say without any reservation that this cast was just as good as the last, and I was so happy to see those who returned. Tayler absolutley slays Memory every single time, and when I met her the first thing out of my mouth was, "You were amazing!" She was so sweet and came straight to me to talk, telling me she liked my cosplay. She asked my name and I told her, but she accidently slipped and said, "Hi Tayler, my name is--" before realizing she got it backwards. She was absolutely lovely. Overall, everyone had a great performance and if you get the chance to see them you should absolutely take it!!!

I also got some signatures on my second playbill. Hank's smudged, and I forgot to ask for Tayler's, but I also got Kade's and he was super sweet (and also an amazing Munkstrap!!!). I also saw Brian (Mungojerrie), who asked me if I was cosplaying as Jemima or Sillabub (he grew up on Cats, too!) and that made my day.

I could go on about other characters/cast and how great they were and how hard they work, but you really should go see the show instead of letting me spoil it for you. I will share some photos here, though:

So yeah, U.S. Tour 6, 2023 was a 11/10 experience. I loved it and I can't wait to get back to the Junkyard!!!

Erica Lee Cianciulli!

I'm biased because I saw her perform the most, but her voice is absolutely incredible. It's perfect for Bomb. And the way she moves and conducts herself on stage is so on point like she truly understands the character.

My other favorite Bombalurina performers include Ines Hengl-Pirker, Lisa Donmall, Petra-Ilse Dam and Cara Cooley.

For this entry to @bombawife‘s OC week, I wanted to offer up my versions of the nameless henchqueen quartet from the 2019 movie--all from wealthy human families, dazzled by Macavity and the Mouser’s Palace, now adapting to their new lives on the streets of his criminal empire.

Cats US Tour 2023

I’m going to go through each Cat I felt was really amazing in this performance and then go through my thoughts on the piece as a whole under the cut :3

TLDR: It was great, see it if you’re able to.

Not going over the parts I didn’t feel as strongly about because it makes me feel bad even though they’ll never see it. 

Bombalurina (ERICA LEE CIANCIULLI) - Amazing, really embodied the sexy, jazzy vibes I think of when I think of Bomba. Really kept her character the entire show and was a joy to watch with Demeter in the Macavity duet. 10/10

Cassandra (LEXY BITTNER) - Slinky, mysterious everything you want in a Cassandra. Loved that she’s lit upas well when she’s Misto’s assistant. 9/10

Demeter (NORA DEGREEN) - She was great, I felt her worry with macavity and her safety with munk and bomba. Loved watching her interact with the kitties. 

Grizabella (TAYLER HARRIS) - NO NOTES she’s perfect. 10/10

Mungojerrie (BRIAN CRAIG NELSON) - This man kept his character the entire time. Not once when I looked a t him did he not have a stupid ass grin on his face. 10/10

Munkustrap (KADE WRIGHT) - LOVED HIM AS MUNKU. Great presence. He knows who the hell munk is. Would be GLAD to have him as the ~new munk~ in a new movie. 10/10

Peter/Bustopher Jones/Asparagus (JOHN ANKER BOW) - adorable as Gus and hilarious as Bustopher. it’s giving very much rumpus cat. 9/10.

Plato/Macavity (SAM BUCHANAN) - THIS BOY IS HELLA THICK. The fight between him and munk was great. threw him like a rag doll. Didn’t over play it, which is great. Was very cute with Vicky in the Jellicle ball scene. Baby 9/10

Sillabub (SAM BELLO) - beautiful voice and paired excellently with Griz, their short duet give me goose bumps. 9/10

Skimbleshanks (JOHN ZAMBORSKY) - Great, loved him, gave me train cat on a mission, no notes, would trust him to make sure I wasn’t bothered by mice. Also gave me orange cat one braincell.  10/10

Victor/Old Deuteronomy (CAMERON SCHUTZA) - IF A NEW CATS MUSICAL VIDEO COMES OUT I WANT HIM AS OLD D!!! 100/10!!

Victoria (YUKA NOTSUKA) - Graceful, beautiful, also baby. 10/10

As a whole: I really loved that they went back to most of the original choreography but the changes make a helluva lot of sense and I enjoyed some of them a lot more than the original, tbh. Overall a totally great time and I loved it. If you have a chance I highly suggest you try to see this cast if you can. This cast is amazing. Not once did I hear them out of breath the entire 2 hour show. All of them were SUPERB dancers. Sound production was also excellent and the live band never missed.

Pippin Tour Review

I have been planning on doing this since I saw it on Friday, but Persona 5 is a v distracting game.....moving on.

The crowd was rather lame (small theater + semi-empty = lame crowd) and a lot of people brought young children to the show. Really people, just because it’s circus themed does NOT MEAN that it’s a show for children. Not to mention that the woman I was sitting next to and her daughter kept on talking during the show. 1. That is NOT SOMETHING YOU DO. and 2. We were in the FIRST ROW, and yeah, okay I know it’s hard to see the crowd when you are preforming, but I’ve preformed on this stage before and you can actually see the first row or two so yeah, she was just annoying.

The venue itself. Well, it was at a university (my university) and it was okay. I’ve seen shows there before, I’ve preformed there, it’s just kinda small. However, there were problems with the mics going in and out during the first part of the show. Thank GOD I was sitting so close that I could still hear what the actors were saying. It was still annoying. But the lighting was good, however who ever was working the floodlight was a bit shaky during some of the scenes. Wasn’t that noticeable if you weren’t looking for it. I will say, that as someone who prefers to sit about 5 rows back from the stage, sitting front row was an experience that I wouldn’t mind doing again. It might have been different if the stage was a higher or if it was a show that used multiple levels to tell the story, like Next to Normal’s staging. But it was really interesting to sit that close to the stage and to be able to see the actors much clearer that usual. As well as see inside of the pit. Musicians, I do not envy where they are forced to play.  

Moving on to the cast, dude, even if the crowd was kinda dead and there were some technical issues, the cast was FUCKING AWESOME! I saw the understudies for Pippin (Courtney Dease) and Lewis (Mason Derreck Lewis), and they were really good. Actually, I really liked Mason’s Lewis. Dude was just killing it. And okay, there is just something about background-ish characters in scenes doing goofy things that I just love, and Mason did all of the mocking Pippin stuff perfectly! I wish I could have gotten a video of it. And Courtney’s voice was almost too perfect for Pippin. It was sort of soft and tender like you want for a good Pippin but there was another layer to it, like there was something darker or deeper inside of his voice that made the Revolution scene a bit more believable. Housso Semon was amazing as Leading Player. The kid a few seats down from me even called her mean after the show, so she was v believable in that regard, and was very good a keeping my attention. Sadly, I didn’t stage door, for 1. it was cold, 2. no one else was by the stage door when I got there, and 3. that raised my anxiety levels way too high to not go to my car and drive home after the show. 

But in all, I would completely see the show again and recommend it to anyone who wants to see it. However, please do not bring small children to Pippin. I have a strange love of the two sex scenes and it was just kinda awkward when there were very young children about.

So I had originally very sadly decided to skip this round of the US Tour but I decided to take a shot at buying will call tickets at the box office today (it's cheaper) and I was able to get some and they were actually pretty good seats!

Highlights from the show include:

Mungojerrie and Sillabub interacted a lot, which I love because hcs.

This Tugger really enjoys tormenting Munkustrap, it's so hilarious and great whether you view it as flirting or annoying sibling behavior. He was always taking any chance he got to tickle or poke at Munkustrap.

This Tugger (Hank Santos) was also constantly moving. Fidgeting, shaking or rolling his body, etc, he always needed to be moving and it was a really interesting character touch. It was more visually apparent in his movements and behavior how quickly his attention changes, a lot of moments in his song actually felt quite abrupt (in a good way) in how he would just suddenly leave cats because they lost his attention in the middle of dancing with him.

Bombalurina entering the Glamour Cat song had an interesting vibe where it seemed to be treated as her actively interrupting Demeter. She didn't actually vocally cut her off but Demeter's reaction to her coming in to sing definitely gave that vibe. It was a more apparent "Bombalurina is actively stopping Demeter's sympathetic treatment and reaching out to Grizabella."

On that note though, Erica and Nora's voices are astounding. I already loved them in this song, I was straight up losing my mind during Macavity, their voices are so good and fit the characters so well!! They both had rather smoky, old-timey feeling voices, very fitting for Bombalurina and Demeter in my opinion!

During the first Macavity scare, Sillabub specifically went to Alonzo for protection and he covered her body with his own 😭

When Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer did the final pose in their song, they didn't look out at the audience, they looked at each other, really feeding me and my love for Mungoteazer held gazes!

At one point during the Pekes and the Pollicles, Jenny barked at Tugger and he got like legitimately jumpscared 😂

Honestly, coward Tugger rights all around, he was always like the first to run away each Macavity scare gfrihwuedoaisj (he did grow a bit braver during the Macavity fight and joined the rest of the Tribe in chasing Macavity off.)

Mungojerrie tried to grab Demeter back from Macavity when he was dragging her away 😭

Tugger's fickle attention span was still on display even in Mistoffelees's song. When Tugger was presenting Misto to newly returned Old Deuteronomy, he had a moment where he like, suddenly remembered what he was doing and had to search out where Mistoffelees was because he no longer knew because his attention had been drawn elsewhere.
