(via The Burryman – Edinburgh, Scotland - Atlas Obscura)
FOR ONE DAY IN AUGUST, the residents and visitors of South Queensferry in Edinburgh, Scotland, are treated to a rather unusual display. A man is dressed from head to toe in burrs, a prickly part of a plant that is similar to thistles, and paraded around this port town along the Firth of Forth estuary. The exact origins of this spectacle have been lost to the mists of time, but there is speculation that is deeply rooted in folklore traditions.
It has been suggested that the Burryman is associated with pagan rituals involving the cycles of death and rebirth, often linked to harvest celebrations. The Burryman’s presence is said to ward off evil and promote good fortune to all those who pay him homage either in monies or alcohol. His appearance happens in conjunction with the town’s Ferry Fair Festival.

“He was the messenger of a great spirit,” says René Montaño, a Comcaac linguist. [...] Montaño is addressing the entire community at a cultural festival in the Comcaac territory in what is today northwestern Mexico. He talks about how their ancestors learned that xnois (Zostera marina), a type of seagrass also known as eelgrass, could feed their people.
“Zostera marina is paramount for us,” Montaño says. “There are other parts of the world where it barely exists, but here, in this channel, there’s plenty. [...]”
Comcaac [...] fishers learned that it was a food that would give them the necessary strength to survive long ways at sea, and the different ways it could be prepared were passed down from generation to generation. In the past few decades, this knowledge has been largely neglected. Today, the Comcaac people are breathing new life into it.
Comcaac environmentalists Alberto Mellado and Erika Barnett [...] have been developing a study since 2020 [...]. The Infiernillo Channel, located between the Sonora coast and Tiburón Island -- the largest island in Mexico and a sacred site for the Comcaac people -- is a Ramsar site, meaning it’s a wetland of key global importance. It features seagrass meadows, mangrove estuaries, and small patches of coral reefs where various marine species feed. [...] The channel is also home to 81 species of invertebrates endemic to the Gulf of California, and various threatened species, like totoabas (Totoaba macdonaldi) and sea turtles. [...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In early 2022, as part of this initiative, the team created an event that brought together chefs and biologists from Sonora, the U.S. and Spain who were interested in the culinary uses of xnois and in the conservation of seagrass. There, the Comcaac cooks shared their knowledge about the ancestral ways of preparing xnois: ground by hand to make flour for tortillas or tostadas, or as a drink made with warm water combined with honey [...]. Newer ways of preparing xnois were also on show, such as in energy bars, hotcakes, and bread in combination with wheat flour. [...]
Today, it’s Comcaac [...] like Laura Molina working to promote the benefits of xnois [...]. In a workshop [...], she flattens small dough balls into tortillas and toasts them over a fire. She says the first time she heard about this ancestral food was from her grandmother. Years later, she asked her mother to teach her how to prepare it. [...]
Erika Barnett says her great-grandparents were probably the last ones in the family to harvest eelgrass for the seeds. She says the fact that her father, now 76, can once again eat food prepared with xnois represents a great success. “The last time he’d eaten it, he was 7 years old,” she says. “Most young people have never tasted it, so this effort is really rescuing our culture.” [...] “The guys and my colleagues didn’t know how to prepare xnois, but I’m happy because we’re teaching them and the kids and adults who want to learn,” Molina says. “This is thanks to our ancestors. [...] [T]hey opened the path that led us here.”

Hi robin hope you're doing good!! Are there any places to see or things to do you'd recommend for someone visiting Aotearoa for the first time?
hi its actually francis but I'm just as (if not more but don't tell him I said that hehehe) fanatic about aotearoa!!! I'm happy to help out. I'm gonna write a bit and leave this in drafts and then rob can finish it off cause its reaaaally late!! eek!! I gotta sleep because there's hiking happening tomorrow!
waitomo glowworm caves are great but ACTUALLY!!! I DON'T RECOMMEND THE SUPER FAMOUS ONE!!!! it's nice but it's not so long and the photos you see online are usually better than the experience you get. try out ruakuri caves in waitomo instead!! they're pretty much right next to the most popular caves, but they're longer, deeper, contain more interesting formations AND glow worms as well!! not as many as the main one. it depends on what you're looking for!!! there's a SUPER COOL motel called woodlyn park where you can stay in an old boat, an old tram, an old plane or a hobbit house that have all been converted into rooms. it's really cool!! might be a bit costly though
SWIM SOMEWHERE IF YOU CAN!!!! a river, an estuary, a beach. check water quality first!! beaches are probably your best bet! one of my favourite things in the world to do is swim at the beaches in aotearoa. I have yet to see a beach that makes me happier than the ones here!
some REALLY COOL TOWNS include rotorua (super stinky geothermal hotspot!!! so cool!!!!! bright green lakes!!!) and ahuriri (art deco town!! they actually hold a 1920s inspired festival there yearly if I'm remembering right!), <- francis went to bed at this point HI its robin now. what the freak is up guess I'm writing the rest of this post. also I'm DEFINITELY the bigger fanatic don't listen to her. liar liar pants on fire etc
UM!!! DEFINITELY hike/do a day walk if you can. I fucking LOVE hiking here it's always beautiful. in te ika-a-māui (north island) I really enjoy the waitākere ranges, there's currently a rāhui for some areas but I went hiking last weekend and the trail I went on was really lovely. there are quite a few to choose from!! I went along exhibition drive and the beveridge track, entering from titirangi village.
we're well known for our native birds, but as many of them are endangered you might have trouble seeing many of them. I'd recommend tiritiri matangi, an amazing conservation island off the shore of tāmaki makaurau. it can be pricey to visit but the sheer number of birds to be seen there is wonderful!!! you can even see takahē, as well as kiwi at night. the cost of the ticket goes towards the conservation being done on the island.
if you have a chance to experience a kapa haka performance or attend a māori festival GO. GO GO GO. it's always incredible, the power and just. joyous fierce pride people put into the waiata and haka is amazing. if you go around june-july, you'll be there for matariki celebrations!!! experience them. there'll be lots of events happening in major cities like tāmaki makaurau and pōneke.
if you're up for a bit of camping, motutara farm is an absolute gem. it's in whananaki, and needs to be booked WAY in advance but my god its marvelous. the beach is wonderful the rockpools are fascinating the walks are incredible and the camping sites are so lovely. you will have to deal with long drops.
genuinely, and I'm so serious, if you end up in the north island LET ME KNOW!!!! I love meeting up with people and if you end up in the city I live in, I'd love to show you around!!! there's a walk I really love in my town that I'd be happy to take you on.
there's so much more but these are my (and francis's) top picks!!!! I love these islands so much. there's so much to be experienced. I WILL ALSO SAY!!! the public transport is very good. you can mostly rely on it especially in cities.

I remember when they started educating us about oysters and their importance to the bay! They would set up booths at festivals in Baltimore with aquariums full of oysters. It was very cool - I don't remember the year they started but 2014 seems about right.
Maryland has been working with other states on conservation efforts. We have made steps towards protecting the Chesapeake Bay, which is the largest estuary in the United States. The hard work seems to be paying off!

Very Small Announcement
Tonight I will be posting the hierarchy and rank changes found in Ever Rain, and then start on uploading Shoreshimmers information! Clan information will be separated into a few different posts ; overview > traditions, rites, festivals > beliefs > territory and notable locations > historical information.
Overview will be an overview of EVERYTHING within a Clan, and will contain all of the above. But because it is a lot of information to try and cram All of it into one post, I am further delving into each subsection in their own posts. Each Clans post will utilize the Clans banner and be tagged with the Clans tag for easy organization!
A website will also be in the works to allow things to be more organized, as I know tumblrs search system is not... the greatest. And chasing links between posts will begin to get overwhelming, and I don't want that to be the case!
For additional news, it has been decided that there will be six total High Rank Adoptables ; two from Shoreshimmer, and one from each other Clan. The remaining six High Rank spots will be open for applicants to apply for with their own OCs!
I do not currently have most adoptables set in stone, the only three out of six that are confirmed so far are Shoreshimmers Seabound Deputy, Jellydrift and Landbound Leader, Minkstar, and Thornrushs Apothecary Lichensting!
A brief overview for each; Art will be included in their own individual posts!
Jellydrift | AMAB | Gender, Sexuality and Pronouns up to Adopter | 34 Moons | Shoreshimmer Seabound Deputy
Jellydrift is the newly appointed Seabound Deputy after the late Sandsong, who perished when a riptide swept him out to sea and ultimately drowned him. This does nothing to assauge Jellydrift's secret, deep seeded fear of the vast and powerful ocean. After an incident with the sea as an apprentice [applicants choice], Jellydrift has felt a fear that they cannot shake of the vast expanse of ocean the Clan lives and dies by. And now they've found themselves in the Seabound Deputy position, a decision that they think is surely a cruel twist of irony and fate. Despite this, they try their best, willing to not let the icy grip of fear overcome their want to do right by their Clan, ever attentive and helpful wherever they can be. Will the pressure inevitably pull them under and drown them, or will they rise like the tides in the Clans hour of need?
Minkstar | AFAB | Gender, Sexuality and Pronouns up to Adopter | 110 Moons | Shoreshimmer Landbound Leader
While their muzzle and paws are fading to white and the signs of age are showing in their bones and pelt, Minkstar has not lost their ferocity and zest for life. Being the Landbound Leader, Minkstar has overseen the hunting and care for the estuaries and tidal marshes for many, many years. Having ascended to leadership during their prime, they are widely respected within Shoreshimmer Clan and widely trusted to have the Clans best interest in mind, having led them through the toughest of storms and scarcities. While there may be an occasional rumor among other Clans about their age and ability to lead, Minkstar simply dismisses these with a flick of their tail and mildly irritated expression. Quiet and observant, they watch over their Clan and the land of their territory with resolve that can only be described as tough as stone. As they get older, though, the Clan notes that they have been becoming more and more distant and stony in demeanor. Minkstar refuses to step down at the request of their Apothecary and medics, claiming that they have many more years of life in them and that this fuss is over nothing. Will they keep a cool head and lead their Clan through the long winter successfully, and will this reassure their Clans faith in them? Or will their willpower begin to crumble, leading them to sabotage other Clans to ensure their own success in the eyes of their Clan?
Lichensting | AFAB | Gender, Sexuality and Pronouns up to Adopter | 26 Moons | Thornrush Apothecary
To kick up a wasps nest or knock loose a hornets hive is what it is like to be on the receiving end of Lichensting's prickly personality. Often referred to by their peers as a 'warrior medic', Lichensting forewent their Prowler position within Thornrush after the devastating death of a [important figure, up to Adopter], of which they attempted to heal them, to no avail. Their limited medical knowledge drove them further and further away from the life of a Prowler and toward the life of a Medic. After the previous Apothecary stepped down, Lichensting was chosen from the medics of the Clan to take up the mantle. This foray into medical knowledge did not strip them of their warrior capabilities, though, and Lichensting is often among the front lines of skirmishes or predator ambushes to either attack or aid, or oftentimes, both. They show little fear in the face of adversity, and does not easily bend to others requests or demands. This oncoming long winter will push them to their medical capability limits as herbs begin to die and clanmates fall ill. Will they take on the challenge of making due with what they have? Or will they use their warrior capabilites to strong arm their way into other Clan territories to get what their Clan needs most?
More information will be available once adoptables officially roll out, but I'm excited to share the barebones of these three in the meantime!
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please do not be afraid to reach out to me through the inbox or DMs!

Morro Bay Harbor, CA (No. 10)
You can’t climb Morro Rock, but you can look for the peregrine falcons that nest there. And it’s not just there you’ll see birds: So many of them love the Morro Bay area that the Audubon Society has dubbed it one of the country’s best places for bird watchers. There’s even a birding festival every Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Nature lives in the water, too, of course—check it out by taking a whale-watching cruise or stopping by the free Estuary Nature Center, a popular hangout for otters and other sea creatures.
The town is an ambulatory paradise as well: Beaches stretch north and south of town, perfect for strolling with a view of Morro Rock. Landlubbers can hike the area’s many trails or simply explore the Embarcadero, a waterfront street with shops and restaurants. Of interest to Half Ironman enthusiasts is the Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay event that happens annually in May, and consists of a 1.2-mile protected swim in Morro Bay, followed by the 56-mile biking section through rolling hills and vineyards, and finally a 13.1-mile run that finishes along the Embarcadero.

Located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is one of the four direct-administered municipalities of the People’s Republic of China. With a population of over 6 million, it is the most populous urban area in China.
Shanghai’s history is a fascinating tale of transformation. Originally a small fishing village, it grew in importance in the 9th century due to both domestic and foreign trade. The city was one of five treaty ports forced open to European trade after the First Opium War, which led to an influx of foreign influences that shaped the city’s unique East-meets-West culture.
Today, Shanghai is a global center for finance, innovation, and transportation, with the world’s busiest container port—the Port of Shanghai. Its skyline, dominated by towering skyscrapers such as the Shanghai Tower, is a testament to the city’s rapid modernization and economic growth.
Yet, amidst the city’s modernity, pockets of its historical charm remain. The Bund, a waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings, offers a glimpse into the city’s past. Meanwhile, the traditional Yuyuan Garden and the Jade Buddha Temple stand as reminders of the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Shanghai is also known for its diverse culinary scene, offering everything from traditional Shanghainese cuisine to international gourmet experiences. The city’s bustling night markets, high-end restaurants, and street food stalls cater to every palate.
In addition, Shanghai is a city of arts and culture. It boasts numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters, including the Shanghai Museum, the Power Station of Art, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. The city also hosts various cultural festivals throughout the year, attracting artists and performers from around the world.
In conclusion, Shanghai is a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. Its rich history, cultural diversity, and dynamic growth make it a fascinating destination for both locals and visitors alike. As the “Pearl of the Orient”, Shanghai continues to shine brightly, reflecting China’s past, present, and future.

Moreton Bay is one of the most diverse and rapidly growing regions in South East Queensland. It offers a range of unique coastal and hinterland experiences. This combination attracts visitors from a wide range of markets including local residents, interstate and international tourists.

However, tourism development is occurring alongside ongoing human-induced degradation of the bay’s natural assets and ecosystems. This includes water run-off, sedimentation, increased nutrient loads, toxins and chemicals, coastal infilling and dredging, eutrophication of tidal estuaries, coastal structure development, canal developments, recreational and commercial overfishing, alien and harmful organisms and noise pollution.

Day 6
Actually, it is day 9 of my stay here but to avoid confusion I do not count the Christmas days and just continue in chronological order.
I did open the shop on Christmas Eve morning, the town was already quiet but, lo and behold, two customers came in and I sold 3 books, last-minute Christmas gifts. Yay!
On Christmas day and Boxing day, David from the Wigtown Festival Company very kindly took me on a tour to the other side of the estuary and through The Machars. The weather was great and the scenery just breathtaking ... so much to take in. I I was very lucky to have such a knowledgeable guide.
Today, Wednesday, I was very much looking forward to opening the bookshop again. After having turned the lights on, I took down the dry Christmas wreath, vacuumed the window display, then dashed to Cafe Rendez-vous to get a coffee to go and was ready to go, a.k.a. sell. The weather was miserable, gray and very rainy but people were out and about and I got a few customers. Most of them were people from other places - as far away as Liverpool - who had spent the Christmas days with family in the Wigtown area.
Tomorrow at 7 pm I am going to hold a little speech/chat in the Open Book about my life on a tiny, traffic-free island in the north sea, which is quite different from life on the main land. Looking forward to that.
