Most cultures have some form of recreational gambling, but Zaarcs are pretty fond of card games, and that fondness proved infectious to the wider galaxy. Made an AU of my twins AU where while Frey gets amnesia and dropped into Selphia, Lest is taken as a prisoner to the Sechs Empire and gets corrupted/brainwashed into joining their side. Eventually when he confronts Frey he uses etherlink to fuse with a dragon(don't worry he gets saved and turn back to how he used to be eventually). rune factory 4 is a combo farming-sim-slash-rpg video game which is... One of my fav games of all time, just, mechanically it's fantastic, i've sunk so many hours into it. The Plot is you get mugged on an airship because you're carrying An Important Object, get hit on the head, and immediately lose all your memories. this is a cornerstone of the rune factory series ok the protagonist has amnesia Don't Question It. then you get thrown off the airship, live somehow, and land on a dragon.

the important thing to know about the plot for the au under discussion is that the dragon, ventuswill, is a god whose purpose is to feed the land with her life. when the land runs dry of runes (magic), she's supposed to die, releasing all the magic in her body, and another dragon will be born and start the cycle anew.

instead, this particular dragon made human friends during her life who didn't want to see her die. so instead, they used a forbidden spell called etherlink to fuse themselves with a monster and essentially become rune engines, feeding magic back into the land and sustaining ventuswill. this is... also essentially death, or at least some sort of permanent stasis, because at that point nobody knew if the spell was breakable or not. and even if it could be broken, if they were freed, the same problem would immediately recur: venti would start dying again.

despite venti's best efforts, four separate people ultimately wind up becoming guardians for her. this is where the protagonist comes in: you've figured out an alternate solution using The Important Object and are ready to free the guardians! except remember you got whacked on the head and forgot everything. including the nature of guardians and venti's existence. you free the first guardian mostly by accident, and after that venti encourages you to free more without ever telling you why, directing you towards other dungeons and bosses... neglecting to mention that by doing so, you're also killing her.

it's a Really angsty plot and so so fun to map aus onto lmao
