The Adlers’ training court is rowdy as the usual roster warms up for their practice match against each other. A few familiar faces are missing, which sparks a bit of sadness among some of the players. Along with the hot weather and indoor practices comes the FIVB transfer window. 

It’s always a big event, especially in the top Division 1 teams of the Japan Volleyball Association. Some high-profile transfers have happened over the years, and Schweiden Adlers is still coping with the double loss of their ace Ushijima Wakatoshi and their genius setter Kageyama Tobio to the European Volleyball Confederation. But this year, it was a running rumour in the locker rooms that Schweiden Adlers executives planned to make high-profile transfers of its own, and it might be as high as their asking price for Orzel Warszawa and Ali Roma.

“Gather round, everyone,” their captain, Hirugami Fukuro calls. A briefing isn’t really necessary when today’s practice match will be as informal as it gets, but he knows how much the team has been antsy for news now that the summer transfer window has closed, and all new contracts have been signed. “First of all, the newly scouted players will be touring the stadium tomorrow, so make sure to clean up after yourselves. We want to make a good impression. Second, we’ll be joined by the two new transfers in a bit. They’re currently still in a meeting with the coaches, but they’ll be running drills with us, getting to know us. The training camp that’ll follow will be scheduled in a month, pending announcement of the venue.”

“Do you have the names for the transfers, Captain?” Hoshiumi asks, eyes bright. Suddenly, most faces are eagerly looking at Fukuro, hoping for more information regarding the new additions to their rag tag team. 

“I don’t see how you guys don’t already know who they are.” Fukuro crosses his arms over his chest, raising an eyebrow at his audience.

“Come on,” Heiwajima chortles, “The press conference isn’t until the weekend! And the coach has been keeping everything hush hush, like he doesn’t want us to know.”

“Maybe he hasn’t said anything so you hooligans won’t bother them!” Fukuro growls out, ignoring the boos from the other players. “I’m still amazed none of you noticed the new name plates in the locker room.”

Fukuro almost regrets mentioning the last bit, as he’s almost bowled over by Hoshiumi and Heiwajima in their rush to head to the locker room. It isn’t long before they’re running back, screaming.

“Ojiro and Ushijima!” Hoshiumi screeches, bouncing on the balls of his feet, “Ushiwaka’s back!”

“They bought him out from CEV?!”

“Since when did he come back from Poland?!”

The training court was filled with a cacophony of shouts and hoots as the players started talking over each other with excitement at reuniting with a former teammate. Maybe then the team’s track record would stabilise with the return of a powerhouse player.

“Is this any way to greet our newcomers?!” Their coach’s voice booms throughout the court, and the players start scrambling to form a queue, shouting their customary greeting. Hoshiumi’s excitement is palpable, nearly vibrating from his position in the queue. 

“If you’re all ready to listen to me,” their coach starts, looking at the faces of his players, “I’m going to bring in our new transfers.” He moves to open the doors, and two tall men walk inside. Looks of confusion suddenly dawn on the players’ faces. Their former teammate is not either of the athletes that entered, and they all know Ushijima wasn’t one for being later, or planning surprises. “If you could please introduce yourselves.”

The first person that steps up is a bit familiar, in the way that you get familiar with the team you keep facing off with in major leagues. “Good morning! I’m Ojiro Aran, formerly the Red Falcons’ wing spiker.” He gives a bow, smiling wide. “Please treat me well.”

The second person that steps up is more familiar to the Adlers, especially to the players that have been with the team longer. While they didn’t get to encounter him in JVA tournaments, they’ve seen him from the amount of times Ushijima brought him around. He’d joined the occasional practice match at Ushijima’s request, to mix things up, but most of the time he spent by the benches, doing schoolwork. His visits petered out when he ended up joining MSBY Black Jackals after graduating, and stopped totally when Ushijima left for Poland.

“Hello,” he greets, glossy black curls fluttering over an eye as he straightens from his bow. He lifts his hand to brush the hair from his eye, the ring on his finger glinting under the stadium lights at the movement. “I’m Ushijima Kiyoomi, former wing spiker of MSBY Black Jackals. I look forward to working with everyone. Please treat me well.”

They were all wrong. Maybe Ushijima likes pulling off surprises after all.

Sports Competitions Cancelled; When Will Those Be Watched?

The world is facing a shutdown of sports competitions for the first time in decades with many clubs predicted to fail financially. As of April 17, the spread of the coronavirus pandemic worldwide resulted in more than 150,000 deaths and more than two million infections. As countries around the world reel from the outbreak's human and economic effects, sporting events around the globe have been especially hard hit. The most notable sporting event to be canceled was the Olympics in Tokyo 2020, now rescheduled for summer 2021. Globally, the sports industry is worth $480 billion to $620 billion, and worldwide markets will be taking a huge hit this year. Football: Sports Competitions in Europe

Italy, which has now become one of the hardest hit countries because of the coronavirus, was still going ahead with Series A football games in the beginning but without the fans. As the virus grasped and spread across the country, the Italian government took increasingly desperate steps to halt the spread. The Government declared in early March that it would suspend all domestic games, a move that has not yet been lifted. Likewise, several matches were canceled by the German Football League and they pointed in a statement about what the financial implications could be for certain clubs. “The goal is still to finish the season by the summer - from a sporting point of view, but especially because an early end to the season could have consequences that could threaten the existence of some clubs." Spain is among the worst affected countries, with more than 180,000 diseases and almost 20,000 deaths. LaLiga and the Spanish soccer Federation (RFEF) have canceled football nationwide until further notice. Given the spread of the virus in the country, reopening football games will take a long time. Russia moved early to cancel football matches and other sporting activities, following the lead of other European countries such as France and the Netherlands. Originally, however, the suspension was to last until early April, as the coronavirus epidemic has escalated in Russia, the planned reopening date now is the end of May. Russian football is one of the top five leagues in Europe, according to the Moscow Times, and is losing more than $12 million per week, putting financial pressure on many clubs. It wasn't until March 20 when, due to the coronavirus outbreak, Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Muharrem Kasapoglu made the announcement to suspend their football, basketball and volleyball leagues. The country reported the first case on March 11, and the government has since worked rapidly to try to cover the virus. With broadcasting profits on stake and an imminent suspension of the English Premier League, football clubs in the United Kingdom are mulling if footballing could simply be a "TV event." With several football teams nearly at the end of the season, clubs are working together to figure out whether matches could be played at Wembley Stadium, behind closed doors, without spectators. In Europe, the Champions League and the Europa League could be left months from catching the coronavirus, said the UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, earlier this month. Football: Sports Competitions in Arica Qualifying games for the 2021 African Cup of Nations have been postponed in Africa putting the competition for next year at risk. Early measures were taken by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the largest footballing facilities on the continent although confirmed cases were small. “Following the growing concerns of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) describing it as a pandemic, CAF has decided to postpone the following competitions until further notice,” CAF stated in a statement. Football: Sports Competitions in Asia The Chinese Football Association said all domestic games at all levels would be suspended on January 30, in a bid to curb the coronavirus outbreak. China was the epicenter of the virus at the time. Mid-March, the Asian Football Confederation voted to postpone all competitions until further notice after several member countries had postponed their domestic games or lockout imposed. “Following the imposition of further preventive measures and travel restrictions by several national governments due to the current Covid-19 pandemic,” the entity stated in a statement. “The Asian Football Confederation has decided today to postpone all AFC Cup 2020 matches until further notice.” Olympic Games

The year's signature sporting event would have been the Olympics in Tokyo. Japan's last summer Olympics was in 1964, and has held two winter Olympics in between. Initially, reluctant to cancel the Olympics and only after national teams started withdrawing their competitors, the International Olympic Committee and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed at the end of March to postpone the games until the summer of 2021. In history, the Olympics were postponed just three times, and only because of world wars: 1916, 1940 and 1944. Cricket

The cricket world was gearing up for the new season of sports competitions when the coronavirus brought it to an abrupt halt. One of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh's most famous sports, the seasons were either postponed or cancelled in all three countries. The billion-dollar Indian Premier League has been rescheduled to April 15, but with India still in lockdown it remains uncertain when it will continue to be indefinitely postponed again. Likewise, in the knockout stages in late March, the Pakistani Super League was also cancelled after English cricketer Alex Hales, who had been in Pakistan for training, sent a warning that he may have contracted the coronavirus. In a statement the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said 900 tournaments were postponed. On March 11 the National Basketball Association (NBA) agreed to suspend the season after a positive coronavirus test by one of its members. They stated in a statement, “The NBA is suspending gameplay...until further notice,” the league told, “The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.” The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has postponed until further notice the start of the regular season, scheduled to begin on May 15. “As developments continue to emerge around the COVID-19 pandemic, including the extension of the social distancing guidelines in the United States through April 30, the WNBA will postpone the start of its training camps and the tip of the regular season originally scheduled for May 15,” the WNBA stated in a statement. The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) hosted an exhibition in PyeongChang, host of the 2018 Winter Games, inviting seven former and current volleyball stars from around the world to compete in a mixed friendly on a snow-covered court at the Austrian Olympic Committee’s publicity building, Austria House.

Team red, comprised of Austria’s Nikolas Berger, Stefanie Schwaiger and Brazil’s Emanuel Rego, beat team blue, formed by South Korea’s Kim Yeon-koung, Vladimir Grbic of Serbia, Xue Chen of China and Brazil’s Gilberto Amaury de Godoy Filho, better known as Giba, 2-1 in the three-set match.

Similar to its beach counterpart, snow volleyball is usually played by two teams of two players, but the friendly was held three-on-three.

According to FIVB, snow volleyball began in 2008, in the mountains of Wagrain, Austria, with the CEV first adding the sport to its official calendar in October of 2015. The first CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour was held between March and April of 2016.

In March of last year, FIVB held its inaugural Volleyball Your Way Snow Festival in Wagrain-Kleinarl, Austria. The federation is also teaming up with existing sports events to build awareness of the game and create a global movement. CEV plans to hold its first Snow Volleyball European Championships in Austria next month.

“Many tend to think that it’s impossible to play volleyball outside in the winter, but you can in fact play outside in the snow,” said Kim, who is currently playing for the team Shanghai in the Chinese pro league. The 29-year-old led South Korea to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Florian Gosch, Austrian Olympic Committee’s head of marketing said, “We are at the start of promoting this sport, which is a fantastic sport. The infrastructure and structure which you need for developing a sport is getting stronger and stronger.”

   Spectators at the friendly match said the cold and snow add a twist not seen in the indoor and beach disciplines.

“In the sand, you can really dig your feet in, but I think, as snow is slippery, it adds a whole new element. It’s a really cool twist on the whole game,” said Sarah Mazdzer from the United States.

The sister of American luger Chris Mazdzer, who won silver in the men’s single luge on Monday, said she could potentially see snow volleyball becoming an Olympic event, but noted “it will have to develop a solid base” before ever being accepted at the quadrennial event.
