On a show of truly terrible people, the one person I hate more than anyone was just a sometimes shitty parent. But when they were shitty, they were really shitty. So just mentioning that person gets to me literally growl. But sure, the actual murderers and mob bosses, I get and even like.

John is waiting for Lee on the porch of the farmhouse when he returns home from his honeymoon. He’d dropped you off at the end of the trail where Kayce had left the VW. You have to be at the conservation centre in Helena this afternoon to discuss the soil samples you took from Pasture 12. Lee intends to meet you afterwards to help you pack up your stuff for your move to the farmhouse.
It's the coffee cup in his father’s hand that pisses Lee off, it’s the chipped one from his kitchen. He can smell that special brand of coffee you like, the one you buy from the farmer’s market. This is John Dutton trying to send a message and Lee reads it loud and clear.
Nothing is yours, it all belongs to the ranch.
Lee doesn’t say anything as he sits down on the opposite side of the steps. If they’re going to talk about this, it’s going to be on equal terms because Lee, he will not stand before this man like a naughty child. He’s done bending to his father’s will.
“You left one hell of a mess for me to clean up.” John says taking a sip of his coffee as he stares out across the pasture.
Lee knows he’s talking about the angry phone calls he’s been receiving from ranchers since the news hit that Lee had gotten married, the ones that were trying to trade their daughters like cattle for a piece of the ranch.
“I never said I wanted a wife.” Lee reminds him as his gaze fixates on the cattle roaming in the distance.
“But you took one anyway.” John points out, his gaze coming to rest on Lee’s silver wedding band.
“I know you hate her…”
“I don’t hate her.” John tells Lee, setting his coffee cup down alongside him. “She’s just not right for the ranch.”
“But she’s right for me.” Lee says tucking his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “She was back then and she is now.”
There’s silence between the two of them for a moment before John sighs.
“I had someone like that.” He says quietly. “A long time ago I had to make a decision between the woman I love and what was best for the ranch.”
“You mean Lou.” Lee says and John tilts his head towards him in surprise. “I saw the two of you together after mom died, I heard what you said about how you loved her, how you’d always loved her.”
Lee has known from a young age that his mother and father didn’t act like other parents. There was always a coldness between the two of them, a practicality. It wasn’t until the night of the wake when he saw his father interact with Lou that he realised why. John hadn’t been able to take his eyes off her during the event, he held onto her hands a little too long when she gave him her condolences and that night after everyone else had left, he’d undressed her in the room his wife hadn’t shared in years.
Lee doesn’t know what happened after that, only his father is now in a causal relationship with Governor Perry  and Lou sells honey at the farmer’s market with her twenty six year old son, Joesph.
“The men in our family, they don’t marry for love.” John says quietly. “We marry for duty and that’s what I need you to do.”
“What are you saying?” Lee asks him, his voice barely more than a whisper.
“When I get back to the house, I’ll have Jamie draw up an annulment, voiding the marriage.” John says clasping his hands together. “After that we’ll pick someone more appropriate, someone whose the right fit.”
Lee can’t speak, his eyes sting as he pulls the keys to the farmhouse out from his pocket and dumps them into his father’s lap.
“I’m not leaving Anna.” He says, his voice raw with emotion as he raises to his feet. “You took twenty years from the two of us, you don’t get to have the rest.”

It’s About Time
Tumblr media
Request from Wattpad mackleann Kayce or Lee ( you pick ) where the reader is a family friend who comes to help with the cattle branding. The pair confese their feelings and get teased by the bunkhouse gang
Driving my truck underneath the Yellowstone Dutton ranch sign I pulled the vehicle to a stop just beside the main house porch. I opened the door seeing that the area of the ranch was already set up for the branding the next morning. Getting out of the truck I shut the door seeing somebody riding up in the distance. “Well I didn’t expect to see you here this weekend.”
Whipping my head around a huge grin masked my face seeing Kayce coming up to me on his horse. “I don’t know why you’re so surprised.”
“Maybe because I thought you’d be busy. But I am awfully excited to see you.” He began dismounting his black horse comic over to me with wide open arms.
Rushing towards him I laughed, throwing my arms and legs around his waist. “You better be excited to see me, Dutton.”
“Hey I said that I was you crazy rascal.” He chuckled at me while I was hanging off his arms. Kayce was struggling to keep me from falling on the ground.
I had been a close friend of the family for years. I had been there for the family when Evelyn died and when Kayce had gone off to serve the Navy. I had somewhat of a relationship with each of the Dutton members, but Kayce and I were closer. He finally sits me down on my feet getting my boots dirty. “You better be nice to me. You know I can kick your ass.”
“Oh yeah. Which one of us has training?” He teased me, tipping his hat slightly to me.
Putting my hands on my hips. “It doesn't matter. I know how to throw a punch pretty good.”
Kayce stared down at me since he was slightly taller than me. Honestly most people would say we were always attached to the other hip. And it wasn’t a lie. I’d basically lived my entire life on this ranch.
Kayce went over to his horse leading him to the barn by the reins. “Does my dad know you’re coming here this weekend to help with the branding?”
“I’d expect so. Why did you have plans to skip?” I asked him to follow him to the barn.
He shook his head. “Nah. But your company will sure make it better.”
Together we left the barn and went straight for the main house. He held open the door for me, hanging his black hat on the wall while doing so. Walking through the living room there was a fire going and I could see someone sitting on the couch. “What made you stay out late? Daddy told Gater to wait.”
“Well it wasn’t because he wasn’t hungry. He just had someone keeping him occupied.” Leaning over the back of the couch hair in my face I whispered in his sister’s ear.
She sat her glass down, turning around to me. “Did you finally take her out there in the barn?”
“Beth!” I scolded her, feeling my face beginning to turn red.
Her younger brother cleared his throat. “We aren’t dating and you know that.”
“Rip and I may have beat around the bush when we were kids. But he knows he’s mine. Everybody on this ranch knows who is with who. You two ain’t any different.” She crossed her arms on the back of the couch.
Tapping my foot on the wooden floor I tried to remain calm about this. I didn’t need it to be painfully obvious that I had feelings for him. I didn’t want to ruin the relationship we have if he doesn’t feel the same way. But Beth had a different mind than everyone else. She knew what words could sink someone into the ground. “I’ll think you’re wrong. Now did you say Gator had dinner?”
“Walking away just means we will have this conversation later, Y/n.” She called as I walked into the dining room.
Pausing in my tracks I holler back to her. “No it doesn’t, Bethany!”
Kayce eyed his sister but had nothing to say to her. He dropped his hands down at his sides. The young Dutton knew he felt something for the girl who walked around his family home like she was always meant to be there. Maybe because he’d seen her around his whole life. She had always been a Dutton in his eyes.
“Kayce, I’m going to have dinner in the bunkhouse. See if I can beat those boys at poker if you want to come with me.” I called from the kitchen, grabbing my jacket and a to-go bag of food that Gator made for me.
He turned his head in my direction. “Yeah sure I’ll come.”
“Don’t have too much fun you two.” Beth chuckled at the two of us watching us leave going to the bunkhouse.
By the time we had got to the bunkhouse we could hear them yelling and half the alcohol was almost gone from the fridge. Sliding in on the empty seat next to Ryan he smiled in my direction throwing his desk of card’s down. “Look who decided to join the party. The future mr and Mrs. Kayce Dutton.”
“Oh not you guys too.” I rolled my eyes not expecting them to be on it with Beth.
Colby fixes the deck, dealing me and Kayce each a hand to play in their new game. “We can’t help it if you make it so obvious.”
“What’s obvious?” Jimmy asked from his bunk.
Teeter, who was fixing herself some dinner from Gator spoke up, removing the spoon from inside her mouth. “They clearly want each other just like I know my baby wants me.”
“I am not your baby.” Colby replied to her.
She smiled, turning back to her food. “Stop lying to yourself baby.”
“I didn’t think you had a thing for her, Kayce. I just thought you two were really close friends.” Jimmy entered the conversation.
I moved my gaze to the center of the wooden table not saying a word. Shifting the deck of cards in my hands I really wanted them to stop with the teasing. But Jimmy clearly couldn’t read the room correctly, bless his heart. “We are really close and that’s all.”
“But they are burning to be more.” Ryan made a kissing sound into my ear.
Kayce hit his fist on the table. “Will you stop talking about that!”
“Ohh he’s getting all embarrassed.” Jake, another ranch hand, joined in pointing his index finger at him.
Kayce hit the table again. “I swear the next person who teases us will see me fly over this table.”
Jake, Colby and Ryan about lost their shit at that statement all cheering like he had just admitted he had feelings for me when he really hadn’t. Raising my hands up I sighed finally saying something. “Can we just get back to the game?”
“She’s still avoiding the moment.” Jimmy spoke up.
Kayce raised himself up to his feet stomping over to Jimmy. He grabs him by his shirt getting in his face angrily. “That does it! What did I say a few seconds ago, Jimmy.”
“Woah, when did poker become violent?” Lloyd came out of the bathroom shortly after Walker did. Both confused at what was going on here.
Forcing myself up from my chair I stomped over to the fridge throwing it open. “Cause I apparently can’t get a beer around here with all these gossiping girls dressed as cowboys.” I mocked them for drinking almost half the bottle of beer I had taken from their stash.
“Well then let’s start this card game.” Walker sat down in my chair and thankfully there was no more conversation like that when Kayce let go of Jimmy. He left the bunkhouse leaving me with the boys and Teeter for the rest of the night which made me think maybe they had gotten underneath his skin over something.
The next morning was crazy for everyone even though we had everything set up. Coming out of one of the tents we had set up I halted in my tracks seeing the blonde that had hit a rock after an animal protest talking with him. Summer I remember her name to be. “I don’t think this place is right for you.”
“Oh don’t worry. Once I get out of here I will leave. Besides I can sense somebody doesn’t care much for me being in your company.” She turned her head slightly seeing that I was glaring at the pair.
Kayce turned his attention to her, quickly walking away from her side. “See you around, Summer…what’s got you so angry?”
“I’m not angry over anything.” I crossed my arms over my chest.
He tilted his head. “Really cause you won’t make eye contact when you’re angry. You also hug your arms to your chest when you’re angry. So what made you upset?”
“I think I should be asking you that more than you asking me after what happened last night. You bailed on me Kayce, why?” I questioned the young rancher trying to figure out why all day but nothing came to mind.
He blinked a few times with silent passing between us. “I didn’t like what they were saying about us.”
“It was just teasing right or do you have feelings for me?” I blurted it out letting my curiosity get the better of me when it came to what he thought.
Kayce stepped closer to me reaching up with his hands to cradle my face. “I didn’t like the teasing because I wanted to be the one to tell you myself. But now I say fuck it.”
“Kayce-“ He cut me off short, pressing his lips down onto mine and after that point everything suddenly stopped. Throwing my arms around his neck I brought him closer, deepening the kiss.
He moved one hand into my hair tugging on it a few times. I moaned into the kiss, finding this is better than I could have imagined. Like we were always supposed to be like this together. “I told you, boys.”
“Wait a second.” I broke the kiss recognizing Beth’s voice.
Kayce kept one hand on my wrist when I remained close to his chest seeing that Ryan and Colby were standing off to the side with her. “What the hell did you have them do?”
“We bet her ten bucks that the teasing last night wouldn’t work.” Ryan reached inside his jacket handing her some money.
She took it from his hand proudly walking past us to go find Rip. “They lost obviously. It’s about time you two finally saddled your horses together.” Kayce and I shared the same shocked look but shortly laughed with huge smiles on our faces at the well thought out plan she had achieved.

The One With The Home Movies (Rhett Abbott x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Rhett find some old home movies of his parents and decide to watch them
Warnings: Pregnancy, birth, mentions of custody battles, Royal being a pain in Cecelia's ass etc.
Tagging: @floydsmuse @bradleybeachbabe @callmemana @attapullman
"Jeebus, Mary and Joseph, how fuckin hard is it to find a fuckin Disney movie in this house?" Rhett muttered under his breath as he went through the box of video tapes in the closet.
His efforts weren't proving much as he tried to find a movie that wouldn't scare the bejesus out of Amy, despite the fact that she was only six months old and wouldn't be paying attention. Hercules? That was always a good one.
"The hell?"
He pulled a videotape from the box, the masking tape on the side labeled "Roy and Cece, '92-'93". He set it aside and kept searching, finding a bunch of others labeled with his parents' names and their dates stretching all the way back to at least 1985.
"Whatcha lookin for Rhett?" Royal asked him.
"Tryna find a movie for Amy, all I found was uh......Hercules and......this," Rhett answered.
Royal took the tape from him, laughing a little. "Not sure if she's gonna wanna watch this," he chuckled. "Completely forgot about this one."
"What? Ya'll made a sex tape back in the day?"
Rhett laughed as Royal swatted at him, missing him by barely an inch. "You're somethin else boy," Royal told him. "I'll pop it in after lunch and we'll see what's on it."
As soon as his father's back was turned, Rhett made a face and thrust his hips back and forth, thinking Royal wouldn't notice.
As soon as lunch was over and Amy had been put upstairs for a nap, you and Rhett gathered in the living room with his parents to see what horrors lay in wait on the videotape.
"Hope it still works," Cecelia said, crawling under the fuzzy throw blanket with Royal.
The VCR clicked and the video began playing, the date April of 1992 displayed across the bottom corner of the screen. You and Rhett were shocked when you saw a very young Cecelia Abbott appear on screen, holding a little stick in her hand and the voice of a small toddler running around and babbling in the background.
"Alright what's up?" asked Royal's voice. "Is it showin?"
"Yep, there it is," Cecelia answered, showing him the stick. "Showin positive."
"Oh my God," Royal chuckled. "Oh holy shit......I didn't think doin it like we did would work......"
"Oh Dad that's nasty!!!" Rhett blurted out, laughing.
"What? I didn't think it would," Royal said before Cecelia smacked his shoulder.
You laughed too, turning your attention back to the TV, the footage cutting to some time later in June, showing Royal and Cecelia in Montana with John and Evelyn Dutton.
"Oh God, I remember that day," Cecelia chuckled. "I miss her so bad."
"Yeah, get it! Get it! Show it off!" Royal's voice told her.
You both laughed as young Cecelia showed off her unnoticeable bump along with Evelyn, the two of them bantering with their husbands.
"So this was with you?" you asked Rhett.
"Yep," he answered, a huge grin plastered on his face.
"Oh God here we go," Royal said. "This was the day Perry found out he was getting a baby brother."
You giggled a little when you saw the date of August, 1992 on the bottom of the screen, Royal still behind the camera and Cecelia pointing out all the details in the sonogram photo in her hands.
"What am I seein?" Royal asked.
"Right there," Cecelia said, pointing it out.
"Right where?"
"Right there! Look with your eyes ya moron," Cecelia chuckled.
"OOOOOH!!!" Royal exclaimed. "Oh jeebus!!! He's fuckin flashin us!"
You and Rhett laughed as his parents rolled their eyes.
"I no wanna baby bruver!" the two year old in the video pouted.
"Well, you're gettin a baby brother Per," Royal told him.
"No I not."
"Yeah you are."
It continued like that for a good minute and a half, you and Rhett shaking your heads.
"And that is where your father learned quickly, never to pick a fight with a two year old," Cecelia laughed.
Back to the TV your eyes turned with more footage to come, jumping quick from August to December. "Oh God I remember that year," Cecelia groaned. "My mother had me on bedrest after Alabama defeated the Hurricanes."
"You know you're gonna need to quit scarin us right?" Royal said, his nose pressed against Cecelia's bump, herself half hidden as she held the video camera. She laughed when he gave her an annoyed side-eyed look, the fabric of her denim shirt stretching when the baby's foot nudged against his father's nose.
"Ya'll see what the little fucker just did?" he asked.
"No I did not just feel my lungs getting rearranged and moved in fifteen different directions," Cecelia laughed.
"He keeps it up I'm giving him his eviction notice."
"Ya'll will do no such thing," Cecelia told him. "If I go into early labor it's on you and you're taking Perry for an entire month."
"Yes dear," Royal sighed.
"Jeez ya'll must've been those last few weeks, huh?" Rhett asked his father.
"Try the last month," Royal answered.
"Oh jeez here it comes," Cecelia laughed.
You and Rhett were squirming a little when the video cut to the day Rhett was born, January 29th of '93. The footage showed poor Cecelia all laid up in her bed, the very same room upstairs in the house that hadn't changed in the last 31 years, laying on her side and her hand on her belly as she tried to plow through the labor pains.
"So.....ya'll want me to get a double wide shot o' this or pan down?" Royal asked before she flipped him the bird.
"If ya'll get even so much as one shot of anything comin out down there, I'm gonna kick your ass," Cecelia groaned.
You and Rhett couldn't help but laugh when suddenly it cut to the actual birth footage. "OH GOD DAD!!!! FAST FORWARD!!! FAST FORWARD!!!!" Rhett blurted out.
"I'm tryin! I'm tryin!" Royal insisted, trying to use the remote to fast forward.
Cecelia laughed a little. "Revenge, thirty something years in the making," she chuckled.
When Royal was finally able to fast forward through the nasty parts, he stopped at the one part that had you melting and Rhett's cheeks growing hot with embarrassment. You couldn't believe how adorable Rhett was as a newborn, his face pinker than the sunset and a head full of dark hair, all snuggled under his little blanket.
"Aw look how cute you were?" you teased.
Rhett felt a flush of heat going from his cheeks down to his chest.
"Yeah he was cute but when he turned two, he turned into a lil devil," Cecelia joked.
Now it was yours, Rhett's and Cecelia's turn to embarrass Royal when a shot of him holding Baby Rhett came on the screen, the tiny little baby practically being swallowed up by his blanket and his father's arms all at once.
"Are ya'll cryin?" Cecelia asked, aiming the camera at her husband and newborn son.
"Nope," Royal croaked.
"Bullshit, you're cryin," Cecelia chuckled.
You went through the rest of the video, all of you half laughing and half crying. It was a part of your in-laws' past that you had never seen before, a side of them that had only returned when Perry had been kicked out of the house.
"Are you actually crying?" you asked, noting the misty look in your husband's eyes.
"Darlin I'm fuckin laughin," Rhett chuckled.
"Bullshit, I know you better than that," you laughed, kissing him on the lips.
You couldn't see it, but the smiles on Royal and Cecelia's faces said it all.

The Man in the Red Suit
Tumblr media
pairing: Rip Wheeler x female!Dutton warnings: minor Yellowstone spoilers ahead (Lee's death, season five things), mentions of grief and death, Rip being a grinch Rip Wheeler Masterlist | Yellowstone Masterlist Yellowstone Taglist Form
Note: Merry Christmas to all! :)
Tumblr media
“Why do I have to dress up?” Rip asked for probably the thousandth time since you pulled out the red santa suit, beard and hat.
“Because it’s Evelyn’s first Christmas and I want her to take a picture with Santa Clause,” You said, curling your hair in the mirror. It was Christmas Eve and your sister had invited the whole family to the house for dinner, drinks and gifts. It was yours and Rip's first Christmas as parents and you wanted it to be perfect. Evelyn was only seven months old so she wouldn’t be able to know if anything went wrong or not, but you would know.
“And your dad or Kayce can’t but on the ridiculous-”
“No! It has to be you!” You sighed, putting down the hot iron, “Evelyn won’t sit on my dads or Kayce’s lap. You saw how she acted when we took her to see Santa at the coffee shop.”
“Well he was a bit-” Rip shut up when you gave him a glare through the reflection of the mirror. He knew better than to argue with a Dutton woman, it was one sure way to get a fist to the face. Rip opened his mouth to say something just as Evelyn let out a cry, “We’ll discuss later.”
You smiled to yourself as you finished getting ready for the Christmas party. When you walked downstairs your heart warmed in your chest seeing Rip holding Evelyn and looking at the ornaments on the tree. She had his big brown eyes and dark curls, you were amazed how much hair she had at such a young age. She was really her father’s twin, there was no mistaking who she belonged to.
It was also amazing to see how quickly Rip took on the role of being a father. He had his reservations about it, he was young when his mother died and his father was a monster. It kept him up at night thinking about the type of parent he would be. Would he be mean like his old man? Would his child grow up to hate him? To be afraid of him? For those nine months you were carrying Evelyn, Rip read every single parenting book he could get his hands on. He asked Kayce and John for advice. None of it really made sense to him, but then he saw his babygirl for the first time, and it did. Rip was an amazing dad.
“Momma is staring at us again,” Rip whispered to Evelyn and kissed her cheek. She giggled at the feeling of his beard on her soft little cheek, “You ready? It’s cold out, and I don’t want her to sweat in the car seat and then go outside. That’s how kids get sick.”
“I am ready,” You nodded, “I just gotta get the baby bag, the gift for Dad and Beth, and the cookies for Tate.”
“All of that is in the car and it’s running,” Rip said.
“What would I do without you?” You asked with a smile on your face. You leaned up on your tiptoes and kissed his lips, “Can you put her in the car seat? I’ll grab the Santa suit.”
Rip rolled his eyes as you skipped back down the hall towards the bedroom, “Your mom is crazy,” He whispered to Evelyn and the little girl turned to face her father, showing him a gummy smile. Rip smiled at his daughter, kissing her cheek again and then going to put her in her car seat.
The Dutton house was decorated from floor to ceiling for Christmas, which was probably Beth’s doing. She may lie to your face and say she hates kids, but she would do anything to make her niece and nephew smile. Christmas also made her happy, despite what she says, it was the one time of year where all the Dutton siblings seemed to put their bullshit aside for a couple hours. Rip parked as close to the door as he could get, he didn’t want to carry Evelyn that far in the cold weather.
“You can put the Santa suit on after dinner,” You said as you  walked up the path towards the front door, “While we’re cleaning up and setting up gifts, it will be perfect.” You opened the front door, and walked into the warm smelling house.
“Yeah,” Rip said as he walked in behind you.
“Aunt Y/N, you’re here!” Tate yelled running up to you, wrapping his arms around your waist.
“Hey bud,” You kissed the top of his head, “Have you grown again?”
“Probably,” Kayce said, and greeted you with a quick kiss on your head, “Wakes up five inches taller than the night before. Where’s the little one?”
“Rip’s got her,” You said and nodded your head over to the living room where Rip was taking Evelyn out of her car seat, Monica waiting for her chance at baby snuggles, “How is she?”
“Better,” Kayce sighed, “I think having Evelyn on Wednesdays helps. She might have gone a tad overboard with the gifts for her, but it’s her first Christmas.”
“If you think Monica has spoiled her, wait until you see what Beth has put under the tree,” Your dad said, also giving you a kiss on the head in greeting, “Gator is ready to serve dinner.”
“Sounds good, daddy,” You said and then walked over to your husband, who was watching Monica hold his daughter. Monica was slowly looking better since the loss of her son John. It was actually her that asked if she could babysit Evelyn for you while you were spending time going back to work for your dad’s new role as governor. It was nice to see her smile again.
“Dad wants us at the table,” You said to them.
“Thanks Y/N,” Monica said, and handed you your daughter, “She looks like she’s feeling better.”
“She is. Thank you very much for those tips,” You smiled at the woman before she walked off to go find her own family.
Gator probably spent the whole day working on the Christmas dinner for the Duttons. The table was stocked full of ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, all the fixings. John sat at the head of the table like he usually did, you and Beth on either side of him. Rip sat next to you, and Tate on the other side of him. Kayce sat on the other end, with Monica on his left. There usually was one more person at the table, but Jamie had turned down Beth’s (not so nice) invite. John had dug around in the basement for the high chair that they’ve had since you were a baby to put Evelyn in. She sat between you and John.
“So, Tate,” Beth said, taking a sip of her wine and looking up at you with a glint in her eye. She knew of your plan to get Rip into the Santa costume and hopefully telling Tate outloud will help seal the deal, “I hear Santa is coming by.”
“He’s not real,” Tate answered and Rip looked at you with a shit eating grin, “I’m not five anymore.”
“See, he’s not five, and Evelyn is too-”
“You are putting on the damn Santa outfit,” You harshly whispered to him, “If I have to stuff you in it myself, you’re putting it on.”
“I’d like to see you try,” Rip challenged and you glared at him. Kayce watched as the small stare down between you and Rip was broken up by Evelyn throwing a piece of bread on the floor. He could see that the whole Santa thing was somewhat bothering you, he knew you well enough to know how much Christmas means to you. You only got to spend one Christmas with your mother before her death, and you cherished the family moments like this.
“Act surprised when he gets here,” Kayce whispered to his son, “For Evelyn.”
“Why?” Tate asked, “She’s just a baby.”
“Because it means alot to Aunt Y/N,” Kayce said and then cleared his throat, “She only had one Christmas with our mom, and it meant a lot to her. The only pictures she really has are of her, Santa and our mom.”
Tate looked down at his food, and then up at his dad. In his short life, he had gone through a lot, and had witnessed loss at first hand. He looked over at his aunt who excused herself from the table to take care of his younger cousin. He thought to himself that there would’ve been two babies at Christmas, but instead, there’s just one.
Tate nodded, “Okay. I will, I promise.” Kayce smiled at his son and patted his shoulder.
When everyone's bellies were full, the family retired to the living room, where they started opening gifts from the large pile underneath the Christmas tree. You sat on the floor with Evelyn on your lap, helping her tear into the packages that Tate was handing her. She was having more fun sticking the wrapping paper in her mouth than trying to open the gifts. Both Beth and Monica had their phones out making sure to take pictures to capture the moments. The men all sat back with drinks in their hands, talking about cattle and giving the occasional “oh that’s cool” when it was needed.
“Tate, why don’t you help Evelyn open the gifts from us,” Monica and moved down on the floor next to the kids.
“I noticed you don’t have the Santa costume on,” You whispered to Rip.
“There’s no need to put the ridiculous suit on,” Rip said, sipping his whisky, “She’s not going to remember it.” You clenched your jaw as you looked at the ground, “She’s a baby. It can wait until-”
“It can’t wait!” You yelled and the eyes of your family members looked at you. You sucked in a breath to compose yourself and stood up from the floor, “I’m sorry. It’s just. . . its tradition.”
“Y/N,” Rip called out to you, trying to grab your hand as you walked away from the living room. He sighed and ran a hand over his beard.
“She believed in Santa until she was about fourteen,” John said, “Might’ve been partially my fault. I paid Paul Adler to dress up as Santa and come to the house. I guess it was my way of holding on to the things my Evelyn used to do.” John looked at the last family portrait that was sitting on the mantel above the fireplace. It was taken on Christmas eve of 1996. You were in your mothers arm with Lee looking over her shoulder at you. You were the closest with Lee growing up, and his death affected you much harder than anyone else.
“I never realized how much it meant,” Rip answered, “I just thought it was something silly that she wanted to do for the kids.”
“Everything that girl does has meaning to it. She just doesn’t do things ‘just because’. You’ll learn that soon enough.”
Rip nodded and then stood up from the couch, going down the hall after you. Monica smiled at her father-in-law. They hadn’t ever had a close relationship, John saw Monica as the woman who was going to take his son away from him, but they had bonded over the horrible shared grief between them. John looked at Monica, and the woman handed her his granddaughter.
“C’mere, Evie,” John said, lifting the baby from Monica’s arms, “How about you open this?” He grabbed the small box from the side table and helped the little one open it. It was her very first pair of cowboy boots, “Every girl needs a pair of boots.” He kissed her forehead and helped her put them on her feet.
You were laying on your childhood bed, staring up at the ceiling where there were once glow in the dark stars that Lee helped you put up. Your father was livid and worried that they would pull the paint off the ceiling, but Lee assured him that it wouldn’t. The next person in this house who loved the Christmas traditions besides you was Lee. He would stay up late with you to wrap presents as you would write in fancy handwriting ‘To who, from Santa.” When you were younger, he would be the one to eat the cookies, and leave “snowy” (which was actually flour) footprints by the fireplace as if good Ol’ Saint Nick had actually come down the chimney to leave gifts. One time, he even brought a horse up from the barn to leave “reindeer” prints in the fresh snow (however, you knew a horse track when you saw one).
You thought that overtime, the grief of losing your mother and brother would slowly start to subside, but it seemed as if this Christmas, it had come back in full blast. Maybe it was because you were a mother now, and you knew how fragile life could be and change with a snap of a finger.
“Baby?” You heard Rip’s voice before you saw him. You just sighed, and listened as his heavy boots walked over to you, “I’m sorry about the Santa stuff.”
“My dad tell you I believed in Santa until I was thirteen.”
“He said fourteen.”
“He’s a fucking liar. Jamie told me on my thirteenth birthday that I can’t believe Santa was real anymore,” You said and sat up from your bed, “I should be apologizing to you.”
“For what?” Rip asked, and sat next to you on the bed.
“I know the holidays aren’t your thing,” You said and grabbed his hand. Your nervous habit was playing with his hands, “And I shouldn’t have pushed you so much into doing it.”
Rip smiled sadly at you, and grabbed your hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing the back of it, “The holidays are my thing because they are your thing. They make you happy, and anything that makes you happy makes me happy. Besides, Evelyn seems to love it.”
You giggled and shook your head, moving closer to your husband. He wrapped his strong arms around you, “You’re right, Evelyn won’t remember this. She’s spending more time shoving wrapping paper in her mouth than knowing what's going on.”
“But we will remember,” Rip said and kissed your cheek, “We will remember Evelyn’s first Christmas and that’s what matters.”
“Thank you,” You said, looking up at him.
“For what, baby? I nearly ruined this shit.”
“For giving me the best Christmas present ever,” You smiled up at him. He caressed your face and then placed a kiss on your lips. You hummed into the kiss, and ran your fingers through his brown curls. He moved you in his lap, so you were straddling him, and he laid back against the bed. His hands roamed your body, going down to your hips. Your tongues moved against one another, you being able to taste the whiskey on his tongue.
A knock on the door startled you both as you lifted your head up to see Beth standing in the doorway, “Oh don’t stop on my account,” She had a smirk on her face and you rolled your eyes, “But there’s someone here to see you.”
You furrowed your eyebrows and climbed off of Rip and your bed. You walked down towards the living room and stopped in your tracks seeing,
“Santa?”
“Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!” Santa said, standing in the middle of your living room. You looked at your sister and Rip.
“I made a call,” Beth smiled, and you threw your arms around her, hugging her tightly, “Oh-”
“Thank you, Bethy,” You said and then went towards your child who was back in Monica’s arms. Rip looked a bit confused as he watched you place Evelyn in Santa’s arms. He looked around the living room spotting Kayce, John, and Gator all standing around.
“Who did-” Rip asked Beth but then he heard Santa speak again, “Lloyd?”
Beth shrugged, “He owed me a favor.”
Rip shook his head, and then walked towards his family. Beth let out a breath in relief as she watched her family gather around to talk to “Santa”. Evelyn surprisingly didn’t cry when she was set on Santa’s lap, probably because she was too distracted by all the movement around her.
“Get together you three,” Monica said, grabbing your phone from you, “I’ll take a picture.”
“Rip, sit on the other side of Santa’s lap,” You said and he gave you a deadpanned look, “It’s for the memories, sweetheart.”
“Only for you, honey,” Rip gave you a fake smile as he carefully sat on Lloyd’s other knee.
“Don’t break me bossman,” Lloyd said and Rip also gave him a glare, “It’s for the kid, don’t be a grinch! Smile!”
“Call me a grinch again and I’ll have you scrapping shit-”
“Okay, smile!” Monica said, “1. . . 2. . . 3!”
You, Rip and “Santa” smiled at the camera as Evelyn was still looking up amazed at Santa. You took her from Santa’s lap and looked at the pictures Monica took.
“They’re perfect!” You cheered, “Thank you so much, Santa.”
“No problem! Ho, ho, ho!” Santa said and Beth led him out the front door.
Rip put his arm around your shoulders, “You know what they say about Mistletoe.”
You looked up above your head to see the green twig hanging above you. You smiled and grabbed Rip’s face, bringing him down to you for a kiss, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Wheeler.”
“Merry Christmas to you, Mrs. Wheeler.

The Rancher and The Pilot (The long awaited FINAL!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Seresin x Dutton!Reader
Warning: Language, Fluffiness, Jake (yes he is a warning)
It had been a 6 of months since Y/N moved with Jake. Things seemed to calm down rather quickly. Though yes she did miss the ranch and her friends. She still talked to them at least once a week. Her dad thought she talked to him everyday. She herself couldn’t deal with not talking to him. She loved her father with her whole heart. Maybe that’s why Jake had surprised her with a 2 week vacation back to the ranch. They were about 5 minutes out from the house when she looked over at him and smiled. She loved Jake with everything she had, and he loved her just as much. That’s why he wanted to propose to her surrounded by their families. She didn’t know that Jake’s Mom,Dad, and 3 sisters along with their husbands and kids had flown out the night before. Or that her sister was finishing up the surprise engagement party in those last few minutes. What Jake didn’t know was that Y/N had a surprise of her own that she wanted to share with everyone.
When they finally pulled up her father was waiting on the porch. As soon as she could she was outta that truck and hugging her father. “I missed you so much Daddy.” She said as she jumped into her father’s arms. “I missed you too sweetheart. Without you here it’s been pretty boring.” John said as he hugged his youngest daughter. “Rip you and Ryan take Y/N and Jake’s stuff up to their room. As Y/N started to walk in the house she was stopped by her pink haired best friend “YOU’RE BACK!! You never fucking leave me alone with these fuckers again you hear me. I love you” Teeter said bear hugging the girl. “I love you too, but Teeter I’m only here for 2 weeks. You can call me anytime you need me though ok?” She said as Teeter nodded.
After a while of talking to everyone outside Y/N noticed that Jake had disappeared. “I’m gonna head in and see if I can find Jake.” She said opening the door only to see Jake down on one knee with the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. She then realized that behind Jake was his family. She cried as she walked towards falling to her knees in front of him nodding her head. “Y/N Elsa Dutton I love you so so much. Everything about you makes me fall deeper in love with you everyday. I love that you love all animals even birds knowing that you are terrified of seagulls. I love that you know every word to every CoJo song. I love how when you first wake up in the morning the first thing you do is roll over where you are facing me and trace my face with your fingers. I love the stories from your childhood especially the ones of you and Beth getting into trouble. Please do me the honor of being your husband?” Jake said by this time both of them were in tears as well as most of their family members. “Yes absolutely Yes.” She said as she kissed him everyone cheering around them. “I guess it’s a good time to tell you that I’m pregnant.” She said softly as she was still crying. Everyone started to cheer again. They both finally stood up getting pulled away for hugs. Finally Y/N made it to her father who was teary eyed. “You’re gonna be a grandpa.” She said smiling as she hugged him. “I heard. Your mother would be so fucking proud of you kid just like I am.”
A few months later Evelyn Monroe Seresin was born 8 pounds 10 ounces and 20 inches long, and she had her grandfather wrapped around her finger the moment she took her first breath.

Fixing Problems 💋 | Rhett Abbott Imagine | Outer Range x Yellowstone crossover
Takes place sometime after the events of S1 of Outer Range and S4 of Yellowstone around 2023 hypothetically
Tumblr media
Link to my Masterlists (might make a Rhett Abbott one in the future)
Characters & Pairings: Rhett Abbott x Lana Dutton!OC (romance), The Abbott family & the Dutton family, Maria Olivares (past romance w/ Rhett ), Lloyd Pierce (platonic), Rip Wheeler (platonic).
Content warnings: profanity, light angst, fluff, mentions of violence and death. Implied smut at the end | female OC (she/her) | wc: 4k
Premise: Rhett Abbott was a man of an unwanted reputation in his hometown of Wabang, Wyoming. None were surprised by the fact he found himself back in the town he longed to escape following his breakup with Maria. But then a few months later Rhett was no where to be seen after his family took a trip out of town and returned without him. Now he’s back for a short time to settle some things and low an behold, Maria is back too. When she tries to mend things with the cowboys she’s in for quite the shock that Rhett Abbott is no longer a man on the market—and what makes it more shocking is his woman hails from the family of the country’s largest land owners.
Note: So fair warning, I have not seen the entirety of Outer Range but for some reason have been reading a lot of Rhett fanfiction and have a gist of it. But I am a big fan of Yellowstone and S5 drops tomorrow. I had this idea but was like ‘maybe I should wait,’ but I don’t want the thought to slip now that it’s fresh in my mind. So for this Lana was born on New Year’s Day of 1997 since Evelyn Dutton died in March of 1997 so she never knew her mother unlike her four siblings. Also although S5 isn’t fully out, we know from the trailer that John wins governor of Montana.
———————————————
“Hi, Rhett.” God that was not the voice he wanted to hear on this sunny Saturday morning in Wabang. Rhett Abbott had awoken with a smile on his face and giddiness in his chest at what the day had in store for him….but seeing Maria again for the first time in two years was not what he expected.
Or wanted at all for that matter.
Closing his eyes as if to pray it wasn’t Maria behind him, Rhett checked his phone for the time and a message he was expecting before preparing himself to face the woman who left his heart in pieces. When he finally does face her, Rhett remains stoic, “Hello, Maria.” There is nothing warm in his greeting, which is evident in the frown that takes over her expression. But what the fuck would she expect? He left his home for her and returned no less than a few months later on his parents porch with a bag and tear stained eyes.
If Maria thought he’d be happy to see her after all this then she was off her rocker.
Rhett had moved on and was in a place he never thought he would be. Happy. Content. Looking forward to the future.
He was not gonna let her take that away from him.
Or even let her think she could have a chance.
“How are you?” She offered a small smile, hoping to lighten the mood. But Rhett wasn’t having it.
“Fine.” She waited for him to return the question, but when he didn’t Maria shuffled on her feet, adjusting the purse on her shoulder, “I heard you were back in town. Was asking ‘round and they said you’ve been gone.”
“Yeah,” he nods, checking his phone again. “I’ve been in Montana the past year and half.” That surprises the woman, eyes widening slightly. She didn’t know what—or better yet who—was in Montana, but there was an obvious difference in how Rhett carried himself. It was completely different from how he was when they reconnected and surely when he returned back.
“Oh,” was all she could say. “That’s amazing uh—I guess.”
“It was,” his voice takes another edge, almost in a longing way. Maria glanced him over, feeling a tightness to her chest—almost like she realized there was something—someone—hidden between his words.
“Well, I was hoping to get a chance to run into you.”
“Well you did,” Rhett’s tone indicated he wasn’t happy with the fact. He leaned against the brick of the building he was standing in front of. It had been a busy day for Rhett to do some last minute things before he was set to head out the next morning. He found himself outside of the pharmacy having just got off the phone with Cecilia when Maria stopped him as he was exiting the store. “So what’d you want?”
Maria bit her lip, remembering how his eyes would flicker to her mouth whenever she did, but Rhett never faltered his gaze. It threw her off for a moment but she quickly recovered, “I wanted to talk to you…about us.”
Rhett made a face, looking away briefly, “Us? What’s there to talk ‘bout, Maria. That ship sailed long ago.” His tone was cold, but again Rhett did not care. There was nothing that Maria could do or say to change his mind. She could pout all she wanted, give him puppy eyes or pour her heart out to him, but it would be to no avail.
Rhett Abbott had found his solace. And it was not with her.
Moving to walk in the opposite direction toward his truck, Maria stopped him before he could even take a full step, “Wait, Rhett! Please,” she put a hand on his arm, but frowned again when he shook her off. “Look, I’m sorry for what happened between us. I-I know I said some things, and I regret it—I would take it all back if I can.” The expression on her face was one of pleading, hoping to get through to him. “Maybe we can work something out. Fix things—.”
“No,” the word flew from his lips, ignoring the way Maria faltered back, surprise coating her expression. “That’s not gonna happen, Maria.”
“But, Rhett—.” The sound of his phone ringing cut her off. Rhett removed the device, turning away as the smile overtook when he read the name, “Hey.”
“You sound relieved. More so than when you get out of pushing cattle. What did I save you from this time, Rhett Abbott.”
“Oh, just you know,” he glances over his shoulder, noticing how Maria has her arms crossed over her chest and disappointed their conversation was cut short. “Runnin’ into some old friends.” He turned away before he could see her reaction to the offense of calling her an ‘old friend.’ His voice goes lower to prevent Maria from hearing, “and this one was the last person I wanted to see on what was supposed to be a good fucking day.”
“I see,” he could just picture her smirk on the other end of the line that paired with the chuckle she let out. “Well, lucky for you, cowboy, I just passed the town's limits. Send me your location. I’ll be there very soon. And just for the hell of it, keep her there—I’d like to say hello.” Rhett didn’t know how she managed to put it together Maria was who he was referring to, but then again surprising him was her second nature.
“You sure about that?”
“Oh, darlin’, you should know by now that I never second guess a decision once it’s been made.”
They said their goodbyes with Rhett sending off his location before locking the device and putting it back in his pocket. When he faced Maria again, she was displeased and tried to not show it but failed. “Who was that?”
Rhett kept his face neutral, “someone.” If there was anything about the woman on the other end of the phone, it was that she loved her entrances. And there was no way Rhett was going to deprive her of one—especially when it was her first one to Wabang. Part of him looked forward to the look on Maria’s face for when that moment came. Not to mention those around them. Ever since he returned to Wabang there have been whispers about him. The usual gossip, but mostly wanting to know what the hell he had been up to in Montana after his family took a visit and he never returned.
“Someone?” She repeated, eyebrows narrowing in suspicion. The possibility of Rhett having someone was not what Maria planned for when she sought him out that day. It was to her knowledge when she asked around he was single or possibly hooking up with the usual buckle bunny. Not many could give her a straight answer since he’d been gone. They really had no fucking clue of what had become of Rhett Abbott.
Rhett gave a curt nod, “That’s right.”
Maria wasn’t having it, “is this someone special to you?”
“Look, Maria. I’m just gonna lay it flat with you,” he glances away at the sight of a familiar black Ram truck turning the corner. Behind it was a dark tinted SUV. As it proceeded down the street, Rhett spotted the giant yellow ‘Y’ on the truck’s side. “I’m engaged.”
“Engaged?” She exclaimed, as though she could not believe it. When the fuck did that happen and why did no one in town know? It had to be a lie to get her to back off him. The thought made a slight anger rise in her that Rhett would say something so serious as his way to reject her. Narrowing her eyes and spitting a tone that was almost mocking, Maria failed to notice the truck pulling up to a stop behind her, “To who?”
His eyes were looking past her, smirk taking form, “to her.”
When Maria spun around on her she froze at the sight of the black Ram with bright yellow lettering spelling ‘Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’ around a large ‘Y’ in the center of the side door. The back windows were tinted preventing anyone from seeing inside, but Maria didn’t have to wait long because the door was opening and a foot clad in a shiny nude heel was stepping out.
It was almost like when you watch a show and only get a small portion of the person the camera is panning its way to before they fully emerge. In this case, the second heel—which Maria was able to notice the eye-catching red bottom beneath it—followed the first before the body and face they belonged to was visible to her eyes.
She wore a light tan dress that ended right above her knees and accentuated her curves paired with a matching coat hanging over her shoulders and brown gloves on her hands. The dress had a neckline that cut beneath her collarbones, allowing the layered gold necklaces to bounce off the light around her. Brown hair with warm tone highlights was pulled back into a slick bun save for a few strands to frame her face, which stood out with the bright red lipstick coating her lips and the pair of cat-eye like sunglasses covering her eyes. Tucked behind one of her ears was a cigarrete.
She was beautiful. Like a model who just stepped off a runway and Maria instantly felt a wave of envy course through her. Several people passing by even stopped to get a glance at the woman, making no hidden attempt to hide their jealousy or attraction. Some of the older men traveling on the sidewalk had done a double take when they saw the name of the ranch on the truck.
And Rhett? He was biting his lip so hard to hide his grin that he was afraid it would start bleeding. And when he let his eyes travel over her figure, a low whistle sounded under his breath, the man praying his cock would not react because the last thing he wanted was a hard on in the middle of broad daylight.
Maria heard his reaction, turning back to see the awestruck expression which gave away everything he was feeling in that moment. It made her upset—remembering when he would look at her that way. Now it was directed toward this mystery woman. His fiancé. It fueled her jealousy more.
“Hey there, cowboy,” her voice was smooth like honey. Flirty and playful. Maria knew that tone—she’s used it on plenty of men. She’s used it on Rhett.
“Hey yourself,” he greeted, watching her step onto the sidewalk before shutting the door behind her. Maria had stepped back a bit as the woman strutted toward them, the bottom of the coat brushing against her knees. The sound of her Louboutin’s clicking against the pavement echoed before she came to a stop in front of Rhett. As much as he wanted to bring her into his arms with a kiss, Rhett settled for a soft peck on the corner of her mouth to not mess up her lipstick.
Both were obvious to the strained look of the woman to the side, who’s jealousy was so visible one could probably sniff it from a mile away.
“How was the drive?”
She took her gloves off first—aware of Maria’s eyes on her left hand which held a diamond ring—, placing them in the pocket of her coat before removing the sunglasses, “As bearable as it can be with those two idiots.” The gesture of her head had Rhett glancing to the truck she arrived in. In the front he spotted Lloyd in the passenger seat with Rip behind the wheel. The window was up, but he could make out their wave to him and returned it with a small smile. With a chuckle he turns back to his fiancé, “I’m sure it wasn’t too bad, baby.”
Her brow raised in a playful glare, “Maybe I’ll drive your truck back by myself tomorrow and you can take up camp with them. See how long you last.”
Rhett laughs—the sound sending a dagger to Maria’s heart—pulling her to his side, “I’m sorry you had to endure that.” She makes a ‘hmmph,’ which only makes him grin. “What’s with the SUV?”
She scoffed lightly, “I told them not to come, but when your father is the governor of Montana, the protection detail is a given. Whether I like it or not.” Maria visibly reacted to the revelation that not only was Rhett engaged….but his fiancé was the daughter of Montana’s governor.
Now she remembered where she recognized the name on the truck. John Dutton had recently been elected the previous year during turmoil with his family's ranch and Market Equities.
Maria watched as the woman, whose name she had yet to know, removed the cigarette behind her ear before placing it between her lips. Instead of lighting it herself, Rhett pulled out a lighter and did it for her. The two kept eye contact the entire time which felt like Maria was intruding on an intimate moment.
The—not so settle—sound of Maria clearing her throat broke up the happy reunion. While Rhett was annoyed, she found it amusing, turning her attention to Maria. With the glasses removed Maria was able to get a good look at her face. From afar she was beautiful, but up close she was captivating.
Blue green eyes stared back at Maria, framed by neatly groomed full brows that matched the color of her hair and a thin line of eyeliner winged out. Other than the eyeliner and lipstick, it appeared she wasn’t wearing any other makeup—something many would be envious of. And though there was a good sized scar on her left cheekbone—as was two on her chest forming an odd shape—it did not take away from her beauty. In fact it made her look more intimidating.
Rhett broke the silence, “Maria, this is Lana. Lana Dutton.” Lana, who was now looking Maria up and down, gave a smile. But it wasn’t friendly which had Maria raise her defenses. “Darlin’, this is—.”
“I know who she is,” Lana gently cut Rhett off, blowing smoke out as she did. “So nice to put a face to a name.” In that moment Marie felt a sense of pride, nearly smirking at the fact that she was still a topic of his life. But it soon deflated when Lana said, “oh don’t look too happy, Maria. I can smell heartbreak on a man from a mile away and when Rhett landed in Yellowstone he reeked of it. Not to mention he was drunk off his ass and well, you know what they say, ‘Loose lips sink ships.’” Maria’s smirk turned into a frown, Lana taking another inhale of smoke.
“But that was a long time ago,” Lana spoke again, “you sure did a number on him, but thankfully Rhett realized his worth.” The couple met each other’s gaze, Rhett conveying a mix of emotions at the woman who captured his heart.
Neither paid attention to the shame Maria was showing. The dark haired woman was having trouble finding the right words to say. What Lana said cut into her, which only made her angry. Quickly she tried to think of a way to divert the attention away from her, “I doubt drowning himself in booze and fucking any piece of ass had him realize that.”
She expected a flash of anger from Lana, which Rhett certainly gave at the insult, but to Maria’s surprise, Lana simply laughed in what could best be described as, ‘you done fucked up now.’ Maria tightened her jaw, taking a step back when the brunette pulled away from Rhett to move toward her. This time when Lana took a drag of the cigarette, she let the smoke waf in Maria’s face—the smell nearly making her gag.
Lana’s expression was cold, unwavering as she spoke, “Is that your way of trying to get me to see Rhett in a different light? To judge him based on the decisions he used to make—which were a direct result of how he felt the world viewed him? Don’t think I don’t know what girls like you do. You sought him out from the moment you heard he was back in town—hoping to slither your way back into his life as though you weren’t the reason for y’all’s breakup two years ago.”
“You don’t know anything,” Maria hissed, glaring at Lana as the anger swelled. With the heels Lana was wearing it made her about an inch or so taller than Maria and with them being so close the scar on her face was more pronounced.
“Please,” came a scoff, “I know everything. I see how you hold yourself. How you let your eyes drift to him only to be disappointed that his eyes are on me. I see how you’re comin’ up with ways to challenge me—as though you have a chance to remove me from the picture, but Imma let you in on a little secret,” Lana falls into a whisper as she leans closer causing Maria to stiffen. People around them pitted glances as they walked past, trying not to eavesdrop but Lana was smarter. What she was about to say was for Maria’s ears only.
Lana’s lips curled up, “You see this scar on my face?” It was a rhetorical question, but nonetheless Maria nodded. Behind her, Rhett muttered a low, “darlin’,” in warning. Though it turned him on immensely by what he was witnessing from his fiancé, he didn’t want her jeopardizing herself. They weren’t in Darby, Montana anymore. Anything she said here could have consequences.
But Lana was relentless. If someone was threatening her, she threatened back ten fold. And she was gonna make sure they knew to never mess with Lana Dutton again. Unfortunately for Maria, it was her time to learn the lesson.
Eyes locked on Maria, voice so low Maria had to strain her ears to hear, the dark brunette was sent to chills by what the Dutton had in store for her. It made her throat constrict for air seemed impossible to breathe.
“The man who gave me it is currently rotting at the bottom of a cliff after I blew a hole through his head with a shotgun. Because where I come from, we take matters into our own hands when people become problems. So take my advice when I warn you, Maria, don’t become my problem.”
The fear on Maria’s face almost had Rhett feel sympathetic, “Lana…”
“And if you question the truth of my words,” Lana’s head gestures to Rhett, “You can ask him. He was there to witness it.” With that, both out of fear and curiosity, Maria glances at Rhett. Part of her was praying Lana was bluffing in an attempt to scare her, but the look Rhett gave her was enough proof she was in fact telling the truth.
Alarms bells were ringing in her head—telling her to get the fuck out of there and pretend like she didn’t just hear a confession to murder. From the governor of Montana’s daughter for that matter. And Rhett was engaged to her? If she had the balls to kill someone in cold blood, what did that say about her family?
Have they killed before?
The anxiety filled Maria’s veins as she let out a shaky breath, unsure of what to do. Lana’s gaze was becoming too much for her and from what Maria gathered it was to get a point across. ‘Tell anyone what I told you, and I’ll come for you.’
Lana brings her cigarette up, taking the final drag before throwing it to the pavement and stepping on the bud. Not once did her eyes leave Maria’s. “I would warn you to keep this between us. If rumors start to spread about Rhett Abbott’s fiancé…I’ll know who the source is.” Stepping away, Lana bids a nod, “It was a pleasure meeting you, Maria. Hope we never have to cross paths again. For your sake.”
Taking his hand, Lana pulls Rhett away to where his truck was parked beside the curb a few cars down. Maria was left frozen, her face pale by the final threat Lana had given— which unbeknownst to her had the two men in the truck chuckling. “What I would give to hear what Lana just said. Poor girl looks like she’s seen a ghost,” Lloyd mused, watching the couple walk up the sidewalk. Rip put the car in drive, prepping to follow them, “Whatever it was, she won’t be a problem. Bitch wouldn’t be stupid enough to if she were smart.”
When Rhett and Lana made it to his truck, her back was immediately pushed against it as Rhett’s lips crashed onto hers. His rough hands cradled her face, Lana smiling against his lips which were sure going to be stained from her lipstick. There was an immediate pressure against her abdomen from his groin. Obviously her little stunt was well received.
When they pulled away, Lana was amused by some of the looks they were receiving from around them. “You,” he breathed out, mouth closed to hers, “are somethin’ else. You know that?”
Lana bit her lip with a cheeky look in response, as if to say, “I know.” She brought her left hand up to his cheek, stoking the soft skin with her thumb. “Had to make a statement. Can’t let some has been try to throw me off my rocker, cowboy.”
He lets out a laugh, arms going to loosely wrap around her waist. “That why you dressed like this? I ain’t used to ya dolling up like this but—,” he trails off to check her out, loving what he was seeing. “I could definitely get used to it.” Normally Lana wore a tank top that made her tits look like heaven and tore up jeans with her boots and leather jacket. As the youngest Dutton, she worked on the ranch as a hand and—like the others who wore the brand—did dirty work when it was called for.
The man she told Maria was just one of the many Lana had sent to the train station.
Only after John was elected governor did she get involved in politics and the business side of her family’s ranch. The media was always lurking, trying to get a glimpse of John Dutton’s youngest daughter who was more like his personal bodyguard. It became a constant annoyance for her. Avoiding reports soon became a second nature for Lana and the times she and Rhett went out they had to keep things professional for the sake of image. It was her father who encouraged her to try getting involved in other things now that he was more of a public figure than just the man who owned the country's largest ranch.
Answering Rhett’s question, Lana gave a shrug, “Just thought I should make it clear to the people of Wabang that Rhett Abbott is off the market and—not to toot my own horn—but she has style and is surely what they would call ‘a catch.’”
“Damn right she is,” he murmured, tipping his hat back a bit to pull her into another kiss. “We sure gonna be the talk of the town tonight.”
“Good. That was the plan.” Lana places one last kiss before playfully pushing him away and hopping into his tuck. “Now let’s get the fuck out of here, cowboy. Lloyd and Rip know to get started on packing your shit while you and I make up for the lost time these past couple weeks.”
Rhett didn’t hide his grin, feeling the tightness in his jeans increase. Boy was he in for the ride of his life when he fell in love with Lana Dutton. “Yes ma’am.”

random lee dutton things in no particular order:
growing up on the yellowstone alongside rip wheeler and spending most of his time working with him, the two have become best friends.
he owns a flat in the town closest to the dutton estate where he spends most nights. beth is always welcome to stay with him if she wants to escape the ranch; she has a room waiting for her there.
after beth, he's the dutton sibling most affected by their mother's death. as the oldest son, john imposed on lee the notion that he would have to take over the ranch once he was gone. but evelyn always made sure lee knew it was still his choice.
despite this, he's the most upbeat sibling. he smiles a lot.
he's biromantic and bisexual, with a preference for men. only beth knows this.
he survives the bullet wound on the broken rock reservation. refusing to take over management of the ranch, he becomes livestock commissioner and the go - to guy to break wild horses on the yellowstone.
he's closest to beth and most at odds with kayce.

Sarah!!! Sarah!!! Holy shit I just had the funniest lil thought ever, it's a little bit weird but I was having the best chuckle ever over it (lol).
I have a headcannon that Cecelia Abbott, Patricia Tillerson and Evelyn Dutton were roommates at Montana State. The many shenanigans that occurred on their watch include the following:
-The three of them being so smashed at a bar one night that Evelyn gets it in her head to call John and leave him a voicemail. These three just left a minute long voicemail of straight up Chewbacca noises
-Patricia getting up on the bar at the Delta Tau frat party (Wayne, John and Royal were all members and John was the president) and proceeding to do a sexy dance to "Super Freak" by Rick James.
-Cecelia getting revenge on the uptight president of a rival sorority for making fun of one of their sorority sisters. She and Patricia replaced all of her skincare products with face paint which also ran when wet. The bitch was sweating with anger so all her "makeup" ran like a friggin river.
-The three of them doing a sexy boudoir shoot with their sorority sisters for John, Royal and Wayne. They actually came out great.
-The girls literally buying every can of AquaNet they can find in Wal-Mart (it was the 80s and the height of big hair, Patricia was infamous for the big hair), they were promptly asked not to return.
-Some asshole tried to hit on Cecelia at the bar one night and the girls tag teamed to dump a whole thing of colon-blow in his morning shake. He never messed with Cecelia or the girls ever again.
-Spring break in Florida......no one will talk about this......like ever (lol).
-The girls rolling up to the Delta Tau house at three in the AM, thinking it was the drive-thru at KFC. Every year on their anniversary as a joke, John, Royal and Wayne will get them a bucket of KFC and regale their families with this strange tale (lol).
Sarah I'm gonna stop right there, I'm about fuckin dead from writing this 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You had me cackling the whole time Mary!! You know I’m a sucker for an OR/Yellowstone crossover and I adore when you do these!!

The One That Got Away - In light of Lee's recent wedding, John reflects on the one that got away.
The Other Woman (NSFW) - John was never meant to be with Evelyn.
Duty - Dutton men don’t marry for love.

It’s after reading Lee’s journals that Kayce realises he has a younger brother. His fingers trace over Lee’s writing as he describes the night of their mother’s funeral, how his father took Lou Reeves to bed, how twenty six years later Lee thought he heard his father’s voice at the farmer’s market and was instead faced with Lou’s son Joseph, a man who shares the dark eyes as both him and Lee.
Kayce can’t believe it at first but now he’s standing in a bar watching the man that looks like him, play the fiddle as if he’s warring with the devil himself.
“Can I buy you a beer?” He asks Joseph when he finishes his set.
He’s standing alongside the stage, gently returning the fiddle to it’s case when Kayce approaches. He barely spares him a glance before he shuts the case and closes the metal fastenings.
“I don’t want anything from you.” He tells Kayce as he picks up the fiddle and finally meets his eyes.
“That’s fair.” Kayce says tucking his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “I’m guessing you know then?”
“I figured it out when the older one came around.” Joseph informs him, his grip on the fiddle case tightening.
It takes Kayce a second to realise he’s talking about Lee. The news doesn’t surprise him, Lee wouldn’t have been able to stay away, he would have wanted to make sure that Joseph was taken care of, that he had everything he needed.
“Look.” Joseph says setting his fiddle back down on the stage. “I’m not interested in staking a claim for the ranch or any of that shit. Like I said, I don’t want anything from you…”
“What if I want something from you?” Kayce asks him and Joseph raises an eyebrow in question. “Just a beer, I just want to get to know you.”
Joseph picks up his fiddle case again and Kayces heart sinks in his chest.
“I’d say that ship sailed when your daddy gave my momma money for an abortion.” Joseph informs him as he pushes past him, his shoulder knocking into Kayce’s.
The air rushes out his body as the words plunge into his chest like a bayonet, stabbing and twisting. It’s an echo of his own past, the one that ended with a brand seared into his flesh as he looked into his father’s uncompromising eyes, the orange glow reflected in his pupils.
“I didn’t know.” He chokes out, his gaze coming to rest on the other man’s back as he pauses, inclining his head towards Kayce.
“Well now you do.” Joseph says, his voice rough.  “That’s the kind of man your father is, he’d rather see me dead than shame the Yellowstone.”
“I’m not like him.” Kayce pleads and Joseph shakes his head in disgust.
“You’re walking his footsteps.” He says before continuing towards the exit. “From where I’m standing, you’re exactly like him.”
