As a child, she was physically, verbally, and emotionally mistreated by her parents, so she used music as an escape. In 2014, as soon as she graduated from school, she went to South Korea with her aunt to audition for a company, since her parents did not allow her to. She auditioned for JYP, SM, and Pledis, but was accepted to only Pledis. After choosing to sign with Pledis, she trained there for three years before debuting in girl group PRISTIN. She was in the group until its unfortunate disbandment in 2019, and left Pledis and signed with STARBORN in 2020. She trained for an extra year before being added to the Acid Flower lineup during their rebrand in 2021.

The Great Produce 48 Rewatch: Ep 3-4, Peekaboo Challenge

When we left off, the trainees had just finished their performance of Love Whisper. And now it's time for the Great Peekaboo Fuckup of 2018. Are you psyched? You should be -- we'll be seeing AleXa, Yiren from Everglow, Lee Gaeun, Jang Gyuri, Yujeong from Lightsum, and a bunch of other great trainees. Plus, place your bets now on how many times you will hear a slightly vocally challenged "fine". I'll give you a hint: a lot.

We start off toward the end of episode 3, at 1:58:30.

Lee Seungki comes out to introduce the next song, and as you have already deduced from the above paragraph, it’s Peekaboo.

The two teams come out and introduce themselves.

LTR: AleXa, Jurina, Yiren, Gyuri, Gaeun, and Eunyeong. Sorry that my screen shots are so low rez -- I’m doing my best, fam. 

Team 1 Introduces themselves as “Peeka-chu.” (In Korean, “chu” is a slang word for a kiss, hence the A*pink song Mr Chu and the f(x) song Chu.)

Team 2 introduces themselves as “Kiss Blowers.” 

I don’t know what’s up with all the kisses -- it’s not a direct reference to a lyric or anything, so I guess they’re just flirting for votes, and I say, get it, girls. 

Seungki talks to Jang Gyuri, and at mention of her name, there are loud male bellows from the audience. Those loud male bellows always make me like 10% uncomfortable. Seungki asks, Does she have any smack talk for the other team? Gyuri smiles and says, “Please yield this match to us.” Hong Yeji, who is somehow only 14 despite being possibly the tallest person on stage at the moment, replies, “We’re younger than you. We’ll show how energetic we can be.”

And then…. It’s showtime! By which Seungki means it is most definitely not showtime! It’s time for a flashback package! Woot!

Let’s see how rehearsal went for Team 1.

The members:

Jang Gyuri, Fromis9 member, who landed in F and was most recently ranked 14th, is the main vocal.

Bae Eunyeong, who landed in B and was most recently ranked 30th, is subvocal 3.

Lee Gaeun, our Pledis queen, who was always an A+ girl and was most recently ranked 1st place, is subvocal 2. 

Wang Yiren, future Everglow visual, who landed in C and was most recently ranked 7th, is subvocal 5.

Matsui Jurina, queen Jurina, who stayed in B and was most recently ranked 12th, is subvocal 4.

AleXa, who landed in C and was most recently ranked 86th place (ouch!), is subvocal 1.

We left off with the lingering question of, is Wang Yiren the right choice for center over Jang Gyuri? 

We pick up with Mary J Lee helping the girls decide who should be their center. There’s a whole weird flashback-with-a-flashback, but the gist of it is that Mary J Lee says that Wang Yiren needs to sparkle more and asks if anyone wants to challenge her for center. Gyuri challenges, and they both audition. We find out that Gaeun thinks Gyuri should potentially take over, while Eunyeong continues to prefer Yiren. Ouch, Eunyoung! No loyalty to your label mate, huh? In the end, Mary J Lee says they both do well but thinks Yiren should stay the center.

We head over to vocal lessons, where we find out that Gyuri became the main vocal since there isn’t anyone much better in her group. What we’re hearing of her voice in rehearsal sounds really great, actually. Singing without accompaniment, she goes slightly off key, but it’s hard to sing without accompaniment, and Soyou gives her a lot of praise.  She says she’s going to rehearse a lot. Don’t rehearse too much, Gyuri. Drink some throat coat tea and take care of yourself.  

We see them at dress rehearsal, and now Gyuri’s voice sounds shaky. She says she’s losing her voice, and it’s her fault for not taking better care of her throat. ARGH. The fact that this happens every season on these shows drives me nuts. She says there’s nothing she can do now, but I hope that at least she’s putting herself on complete, 100% vocal rest. No whispering. Friends, if you ever lose your voice, don’t whisper!! Don’t even clear your throat harshly. Hot liquids only, and drink lots of slippery elm tea. Trust your unnie -- I talk for a living, and used to lose my voice all the time until I figured out what to do.

Ok, the show starts. Here is PD48 Editing’s blessed edit of the performance. Definitely check it out, because the MNET editing on this one is particularly atrocious.

My thoughts: 

Alexa, Jurina, Yiren, Gyuri, Eunyoung, Gaeun

Vocally, this was almost flawless. You’d hardly know that Gyuri was having trouble with her voice, except for a slight scrape on one of the high notes, and on one of the last “Yeah yeahs.” Honestly, it’s barely noticeable. It’s not really any worse than the slight scrape Wendy herself has on the same note in this performance. Gyuri has a really nice vocal color and hits those ad libs with confidence. In fact, I was so surprised by how nice her voice was that I have raised my estimation of her significantly. I had gotten the impression that she was one of those idols who was only popular because of her looks, and this performance showed me she really has talent.

AleXa sounds fantastic, too -- I’m so glad that we get to keep AleXa in the land of Kpop, no matter what happened on P48. As good as she sounds, though, she looks kind of... off. Like she's trying too hard with her facial expressions or something? I've heard that she was working around a leg injury, so that may explain it.

The others do their jobs properly, even on the cheesy sing-talk-rap thing in the middle. I've listened to this song a million times and the Korean rap sounded pretty right to me -- I couldn't swear to it, but my ears sort of nodded. Yes, my ears nodded. That's what I meant to say.

Dancewise, I think they do really well, though as usual the camera work seems designed to prevent you from being able to see the dancing. The choreo isn’t unusually difficult, Boombayah style, but it requires precision, especially in the bridge, where they do the arm trick. (Did you ever notice the arm trick in this choreo? I’m a big fan of this song and I still somehow missed the arm trick the first few times I watched this choreo. The viewer has to be lined up just right for it to work, but when it works it’s cool.) I’m not a dance expert, as you know, but they looked good to me.

Stage presence wise, I think they’re all did just about equally well, especially if you watch their fancams. It’s a tough song to pull off and they did the thing. I even was won over to Jurina -- this is the first time I’ve seen her look natural in a performance. She fit here, somehow. 

However, when you watch the full performance, some of the girls sort of fade away in the group. I feel like AleXa’s overall presentation kind of suffers from her being a few inches shorter than the rest of the girls -- if there was more variation in height it wouldn’t matter as much, but having just one girl be several inches shorter than all the rest was kind of noticeable. Not fair, I know. I’m really short myself, and I don’t hold it against her, but it does affect the optics in a way that I think Koreans in particular would notice. I looked it up and AleXa is 149 cm/ 4'11, which is quite short. Maybe that’s why she works best as a soloist.

It is also a little odd how little of an impact that Gaeun had if you watch the full performance. She’s apparently Subvocal 2, but you don’t hear or see much of her in either version of the edit. I think it’s a combination of the choreo shoving her to the back -- sometimes quite literally -- and the camera man preferring to show Gyuri whenever possible. I watched Gaeun’s fancam and she did great, so I don’t know why we didn’t see more of her. It’s almost as if the show couldn’t hide the fact that she almost was center and was really popular? But also didn’t want her to win…? Hmm.

Ok. Deep breath and let’s talk about the MNET edit, starting at 2:05:20 .

I had a feeling that the tiny scrape in Gyuri’s vocals would take over the whole performance, and it does. We approach the vocal run -- fine, fine, fine, fine-fine fine-FINE -- literally five times. 

The first time is at 2:06:06 and it takes almost a full MINUTE before we actually hear the final “FINE” with the scrape in it. In the meantime it’s all flashbacks about how Gyuri’s worried about her voice. Then we hear it, and we hear it SIX times. Then the episode ENDS! It ends on Gyuri’s horrible, horrible, unforgivable, slight vocal scrape, x6. 

MNET WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS. 

Well no, it doesn’t END there -- there are several minutes of preview of some of the other teams, including a few seconds of Wonyoung wiggling around at the beginning of Very Very Very, and some pixelated members of the other team. and then they give the current standings of the trainees. I’m not going to concern myself with their new ranking since we’re going to have a big vote off in episode 5, and we’ll worry about it then. There’s also a preview of Sakura getting yelled at while tears run down her cheeks. 

Anyway! Let’s go on to episode 4! We’re doing great. Here’s the link.

After a brief recap, the episode dives back in to the challenge mission, reminding us, of course, about Jang Gyuri’s vocal scrape. We go right the fuck back to the whole damn “fine fine fine….” vocal run, and hear the problematic “fine” FOUR more times. That's a total of ten. We jump ahead to the gym bathroom Results Zone and see all the girls crying at the results, and then jump back 20 minutes to see why they’re all crying. Thanks, MNET! Thmnet. 

If you are watching along, you can skip to 2:17. This time we get to watch the whole performance. I’m struck again by how pretty Gyuri’s voice is, and Alexa’s as well. We have to hear two more instant replays of “fine” -- so that's 12 times now, THANKS-- but at least this time they show the whole performance. The show is presenting the tiny problems as if they're the end of the goddamn world and it’s driving me nuts because if you just watch the unedited video, it’s so minor. 

The judges say they’re proud of her for not giving up. Backstage, Gaeun kindly tells Gyuri that she did a good job -- WHICH SHE DID -- but she shakes her head and says she was terrible. She interviews that she’s mad at herself.

She didn’t know that if she sang a high note all day it would strain her voice. Hey, vocal trainers, who failed this girl? I’m remembering all those trainers who said to “practice hard” and “do it 100 times.” Did anyone tell her to take care of her voice by not overusing it? I’m guessing not. 

Anyway, that's behind us now, and it’s time for the second group!

GROUP 2

As the girls take the stage, we hear AFUCKINGGAINHOLYSHITWTF Gyuri’s tiny vocal scrape on "fine". That’s 13 times now we’ve heard it, and I assume we'll hear it again in the future. Anyway the girls in team 2 think that maybe they can win since team 1 made a mistake -- but maybe not, since team 1 is full of popular pretty girls.

Let's see how their rehearsal went! 

Here’s team 2: 

Hong Yeji, 16, one of the CNC girls, the one who fell down in her video evaluation and then fell from B to F, is ranked 76th.

Kim Yubin, 16, one of the CNC girls, fell from B to D and is currently ranked a very low 93rd. OUCH.

Lee Yu Jeong, 14, future Lightsum member and C-class mainstay, is ranked 48th.

Kim Da Hye, who auditioned with I Don't Like Your Girlfriend and fell from A to C, is ranked 89th.

Shitao Miu, 17, who wore the hat on her waistband in her Mister audition, stayed in D and is ranked 45th.

Kato Yuuka, 20, who auditioned with Funny People and rose from C to B, is ranked 73rd.

When we left off, we met the team (which was chosen by Yubin) and learned that Dahye is actually fluent in both Korean and Japanese. That’s about all we know about this team.

When we catch up with them, we find out that things aren’t going well. Dance teacher Mary J Lee has told group 2 that they made a lot of mistakes and that they’re likely to lose to team 1. And poor Shitao Miu is having a lot of trouble with the choreo.

She’s obviously starting to cry a little, but she does keep trying, and I appreciate that about her. The mental exhaustion of being away from home and not being able to consistently speak your first language just makes everything more difficult. 

Mary J Lee asks her what’s wrong -- not unkindly -- and Miu gives a really mature answer, I think. 

“I’m upset. I’m mad at myself for being unable to catch up. It makes me cry. I’m causing other members trouble.” 

Later on, leader Yubin kindly tells Miu, “We didn’t get a compliment, but I don’t want you to blame yourself.” The other girls stroke her hair and make consoling noises, and Miu says that the other members’ bright energy cheered her up. Aww! 

Over at the vocal lesson with Soyou, who I am currently a bit annoyed at, we find out that Yeji is the main vocal.  She is, to my ears, a bit pitchy. Yeji asks Soyou if it’s ok to sing it in falsetto, rather than with full voice (the translation calls it “original voice”), and Soyou says she can, but it will probably make them look a bit bad. 

We see that Yeji is practicing over and over even in the dorm -- great plan, definitely sing it over and over and over and over until your throat is raw. Her teammates tell her that rival Gyuri sings the notes in full voice, so Yeji has to, too. 

Dress rehearsal doesn’t go well. The judges make faces.

Dance Bae tells Yeji, “don’t worry, just sing.” Jeremy tells Yeji, “you need more confidence.” Then the Wizard of Oz tells Yeji she’s had the power within her all along! 

It’s time for the actual performance. For whatever reason, that blessed angel PD48 Edits didn’t make an edited version of the performance, which is fair, it must have been a lot of work and they did most of them.

This is Hong Yeji’s fan cam, which is a lot less irritating to watch than the MNET edit. Obviously it’s not a full cam but since she’s center, you can see a lot.

Well, first off, Stylist Unnie needs a thorough talking to. Who said that translucent thigh highs were a good look for Yeji and Yujeong? Especially considering that Yujeong is 14…?!? For one thing, they're a bit too sexy for a 14 year old. For another, they dig in to your inner thigh, which isn’t a great look, and they’re just sort of… I don’t know, inelegant and discordant.  They look unfinished. Red Velvet didn’t wear translucent thigh highs. They wore high boots sometimes, which were definitely opaque! I understand that boots might be outside the budget, but why not just completely opaque tights? ARGH! 

Anyway, to the performance itself. It’s so hard to even have thoughts without being able to watch the whole, uninterrupted performance. The MNET edit chops it up so much it's hard to take it in. But overall, compared to Team 1's performance, this felt like the store-brand version of the performance to me.

Dance is so hard to evaluate because the camera doesn’t show their legs 80% of the time. I think they mostly did fine fine fine fine-fine fine FINE. Dahye would sort of forget to dance when it was her time to sing, and sort of overdanced certain steps. There may have been other issues, but it's hard to know.

Vocals-wise: Yeji does her best, but her vocals are overall kind of shrill and pitchy, even if she can hit that high note. I’d rather listen to the Gyuri version, scrapes and all, than the Yeji version. There’s more to life than high notes. Dahye does a good job on Subvocal1, and really no one in the team embarrasses themselves or anything. It just felt less tuneful that the first group. Also, the rappers’ tone was a little… I don’t know, off? Just not as pleasant to listen to. 

Stage presence-wise, I thought they were inferior to the first group overall. Yeji looked confident, but almost like she was just looking into the mirror in her practice room rather than at an audience. Poor Dahye seemed to be fighting with her hair for a lot of the performance. One bright note, though, was Miu. After all the trouble she had rehearsing, I was curious how she'd do and checked out her fancam, and you know what, I think she actually had the best stage presence of all of them! I’ll be durned. 

Shitao Miu understood the assignment.

Since Yujeong has since gone on to maybe the biggest success of this group, I went back to watch her fancam too. She does a totally fine job, but I think she just looks too young to take seriously here in this kind of mature song. She commits fully, though, I’ll give her that, and does a much better job than you'd expect a 14 year old to do. 

I think the worst performer (stage presence-wise) in this group is Yuuka. I feel bad saying that, but she just has this totally bland smile the whole time. Like most of the Japanese trainees, she’s great at looking directly into the camera the entire time, but she looks like she’s just marking the steps in a rehearsal, rather than performing on stage. 

The MNET edit is pretty kind. The judges are especially complimentary toward Yeji, saying she's born to be on stage.

AFTERWARDS

When the performance is over, both teams come up on stage. Lee Seungki asks Jurina which team did better, and she says "ENHH?" which everyone loves. Then, through a sweetly smelling cloud of sugar, she says, "I think maybe team one?"

Then Seungki asks Miu, "how do you feel?"

She pulls a piece of paper from out of her jacket and begins reading in what sounds like phonetically transcribed Korean.

"I won't look back. I'll run looking forwards."

It's cute, and everyone applauds. Seungki says the ever creepy phrase "Vote for your girl!" and the audience votes.

The judges talk amongst themselves. Group 1 went out of key, but they did have a better "aura," so both teams have pros and cons.

I don't know why team 1 lost here. I'm not saying that they should have won, exactly, but it's just that I thought they would. Maybe they were sort of held back by AleXa's visuals not living up to Korean standards. Maybe Gaeun was literally hidden too often in the choreo. Maybe there were a lot of AKB48 fans in the audience. Maybe the other team really did that much better. I don't know!

“I can’t believe this is the first time I’m meeting him.” Mya frowned, checking her reflection in the window. “Do I look okay?”

Yuta rolled his eyes. “You look gorgeous. But I’m your boyfriend, not him. Why are you trying so hard to impress him?”

Mya turned and sighed, as if exasperated by his questions. “Because he’s a new friend. And because I’m assuming you’ve hyped me up to be awesome and I don’t want to let him down.”

“I haven’t hyped you up that much.” Yuta frowned.

“Well that’s your mistake.” She pulled away from him, still holding his hand. “But do I look okay?”

She was wearing a matching knit mini skirt and sweater combo with a white top underneath. She had her big pink parka on as well, but it was unzipped. Her hair was half up in two space buns, and she’d already had him take several pictures of her to post on Instagram later.

“You look really pretty.” He promised. “Please be normal around my group mate.”

“Yuta?” A voice called from behind them.

Before Yuta could even turn to greet Shotaro, Mya had shot by him, wrapping the boy in a hug. “It’s so nice to meet you!”

“Um…you’re Mya, right?” He didn’t quite know what to do with his hands, leaving them hovering awkwardly behind her.

“What did we say about not being weird?” Yuta carefully pried her off.

“Sorry.” She shook her head, turning back to Shotaro. “Sorry, I’m just really excited to meet you.”

“It’s really nice to meet you too.” Shotaro bowed politely. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Only good things, I hope.” She grinned. “I’ve been asking him so much about you, too, but he hasn’t really been cooperating.”

“I’ve told you everything you asked.” Yuta placed an arm around her shoulders. “And I warned him.”

“Why would you need to warn him?” Mya glanced at Shotaro, looking worried. “I’m really nice, I promise.”

“You seem really nice.” Shotaro rubbed his arm, obviously uncomfortable with being in the middle of a dispute. “He didn’t say anything bad.”

“He better not have.” Mya stuck her tongue out at Yuta, ducking out from under his arm. She moved over to Shotaro, linking arms with him. “Let’s go get food. Are you hungry?”

“I’m always hungry.” Shotaro smiled, casting a nervous look behind him as Mya led him into the restaurant.

“Me too!” Mya grinned. “Because we’re not promoting right now I think I’m gaining weight. But you look so skinny? Are you working really hard? You have to remember to eat meals, you know.”

“I…I try my best.”

“He eats, Babe.” Yuta said, trailing after them.

“Yeah, but does he eat enough?” Mya turned, shaking her head. “We’ve talked enough about your eating habits; I don’t need you teaching Shotaro to follow in your poor choices.”

“Um…I do try to eat a-“

“Reservation for Enomoto.” Mya said to the host, dragging the boys along and ignoring anything they said. She released Shotaro’s arm to slide into the booth, giving him a moment to talk to his groupmate.

“Am I in trouble?” Shotaro asked.

“No, she’s just like this.” Yuta snorted. Despite their little dispute earlier, it was clear from the look in his eyes as he watched his girlfriend adjust her skirt that he was totally in love with her. “Just smile and nod. She won’t actually listen to you until you’ve been friends for a few weeks.”

“What?” Shotaro asked.

He never got the answer. Mya grabbed his arm and pulled him into the seat next to her, leaving Yuta to sit across from them.

“Alright, I’m thinking we get the soup, the crab, maybe the assorted sushi tray, and then see how we feel.” She pointed to the items on the menu. “Thoughts?”

“You got sick when you had the crab last time.” Yuta reminded.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “But it was worth it. And anyways, I wasn’t asking you. I wanted to know what Shotaro-chan thought.”

Shotaro swallowed. “We could get the crab.”

“Is there anything else you want? It’s my treat.” Mya smiled at him.

Shotaro shook his head quickly. “No, I’m good with that to start.”

“Key word – to start.” Yuta laughed. “This is the first of many courses.”

“Can’t wait.” Shotaro said nervously.

“I know, right?” Mya beamed, not catching his worry.

Iris’s Relationship With Other Idols

Winter

Winter and Iris actually met before (g)-idles debut, meeting at a pizza shop where their orders got mixed up. They ended up talking and realized they had a lot in common. Despite the 2 year age gap, Winter actually helped Iris with her studies in school. Winter always goes to Iris for advice, knowing that even if she doesn’t have an answer, she will make one up!

Chungha

Chungha and Iris got extremely close during Produce 101, being called the two best dancers on the show. The producers tried to pin them against each other, but that just made them closer friends. Chungha heavily supported Iris’s solo projects and they are constantly seen together in public. 

Sihyeon

Sihyeon and Iris also met in Produce 48, being in the same group together for the Say My Name performance. Sihyeon applauded Iris’s leadership skills, despite being so young, and Iris constantly talked about how much she loved Sihyeon’s voice. Iris normally calls Sihyeon when she wants a break from the craziness of Idle and Sihyeon will always give her that.

Olivia Hye

Iris was actually a fan of Loona before she met Hyejoo. When they first met at ISAC, Iris couldn’t even speak to anyone in Loona because she was so shocked to see them. She eventually met Hyejoo, where she almost spilled her drink on her! They eventually got to talking and Hyejoo complemented Iris on her dancing in Hann (their most recent comeback at the time). Then Iris said she would teach Hyejoo the choreography, and the rest was history!

Sorn

Iris always looked up to Sorn and she admired the way she took charge of CLC, despite not being the leader or the oldest. Iris would follow suit, being in charge of most of (G)-Idle’s promotions and appearances in public. She is often seen guest staring on Sorn’s Tiktok and Sorn has crashed many of Iris’s V-Lives.

i’m assuming you meant a reaction, like how each member would respond. But i can rewrite as a scenario if you’d like :)

Sihyeon

As the oldest member, Sihyeon always felt it was her job to protect you from anything bad. When the group was on Idol Room and one of the MCs hit you over the head with a hammer, much harder than he should have, she wasn’t happy. It was clear that it actually did hurt you but not wanting to cause any issue, you laughed it off. Sihyeon told the MC that he hit you too hard and had him apologize to you. Of course he thought it was all a joke, but it was very clear she wasn’t joking. Sihyeon would try to make you feel better afterwards by making you laugh and tickling you when cameras stopped rolling.

E:U

Though out the industry you were known as the “nation’s princess”. People stopped and stared at you wherever you went, even before you debuted. It was understandable that you’d been named the most beautiful face in the world 4 times in a row. However what set you apart was that you were the only member of the group that was only half asian, and the only 4th gen idol that was half black as well. That being said there were time when people would make fun of you for either your looks, the way you talked spoke Korean, etc. Your members were always ready to defend you, especially Jiwon. As the leader she was always prepared to fix whatever problems fell upon one of her members. When a sasaeng followed you around shouting slurs and insults at you, Jiwon was the first to react. She would end up telling managers and higher ups in the company, pushing to take legal action as this wasn’t the first time this had happened. Jiwon would be there to comfort you and tell you how much she loved you, making sure you knew that you were beautiful and loved.

Mia

You and Mia were the main dancers of the group along with being main vocals. A lot was expected of the two of you, hence why you tended to overwork yourself to exhaustion. While getting ready for Dun Dun promotions you’re ended up working too hard and hurting your ankle. Luckily nobody was there to see it, so you decided to ignore it and continue practicing. This went for weeks until you realized you only made the issue worse. Eventually you caved and told Mia knowing that she went through something similar during Adios promotions. She helped you pushthrough promotions best she could. However, the entire 4 weeks people criticized you heavily. They claimed you were lazy and overly favored in the group and didn’t give what you received from the company. It didn’t bother you until an interviewer told you to your face that you didn’t do well this comeback in their opinion. Mia was quick to jump to your defense, explaining that you were in fact injured but decided to push yourself and participate in promotions anyways. You were grateful that she always had your back.

Onda

As silly, goofy, and nonchalant that Onda can be, she can also be very serious when she needs to be. She takes great pride in being your unnie and always makes sure that you’re doing well. It was only the two of you in a practice room with a choreographer going over the La Di Da dance break. Although you were usually able to keep up with your dancing, this time you couldn’t. After going over the same section with no success for the eighth time, the choreographer snapped. He yelled at you and insulted you until you were in tears and unable to even speak. Onda was quick to react, pulling you outside the practice room to comfort you in private. She held you in her arms and told you she was proud of you for not giving up even though you were struggling. She decided that you had enough practicing for the night and you two should just go home. For the rest of the night she would play around with you and make sure that you were happy, and that the choreographer didn’t get under your skin.

Aisha

You and Aisha were the two tallest female kpop idols at the moment. Despite being the baby of your group, you towered over your members standing at an even 180 cm. In addition to this you were much more muscular than most girls as well. Before you met Aisha you were self conscious about your height and build. But once you met someone close to your height, you became more confident. In addition to this she reminded you of how beautiful you are almost every hour of the day. She loved seeing your confidence grow as you started to accept your height. However that was almost ruined when a male idol made a joke to your face about how boys didn’t like tall girls. He added on that you looked more “manly” than anything else. Sure you weren’t into boys, you had Aisha...but it still hurt. Aisha was quick to run to your side. She would wait until she knew the camera wasn’t on her to whisper in your ear “good thing i’m not a boy then hmm?” Your girlfriend being the tease that she was would kiss you gently just behind your ear where she just spoke. Leaving you a flustered and blushing mess in the middle of of the stage.

Yiren

You were added into Everglow after their debut along with Choi Yena who was previously in IZ*ONE. The two of you joined after Yena’s contract ended. Originally it was only Yena who was supposed to be added in, but you proved that you’d make a great addition to the group. The girls already loved you and hung out with you while you were a trainee anyways. Everything just fit now that it was 8 of you. However people didn’t like that you were added. Everyone loved Yena, I mean how could you hate her. But you, you were an easy target for them. You were new and clearly lacking confidence compared to your other members. Yiren might only be a few years older than you, but she considered you her baby and she’s protect you at all costs. When you went on V Live with Yiren the comments were flooded with nasty words in Chinese. When you asked her to translate for you she would tell you that they were complementing you and telling you how much they loved you instead of the opposite. Much later you found out what actually happened, but you were thankful you had someone like her there to protect you.

mac miller - circles (album) it’s a bit funny that i worried putting my thoughts down about this album and now it turns out to be first on the list, chronologically of course … oh bittersweet irony </3 listening to this album is such a double edged sword, either way i am always hit with a truckload of feelings when i turn to this release.

this album came to me in a time of my life where i was slowly but surely sliding down towards rock bottom again just after i got out of it and thought i was okay. the times i’ve listened to this crying in the bathtub with a glass of wine….girl let’s not lol…. it’s almost strange how much i can relate to the thoughts another person brought to paper. the comfort this album brings me is otherworldly, i feel so understood by mac’s words and it’s my go-to “wallow in self-pity for a bit then come out stronger than before” album. then again, i feel a little sting when any of mac’s songs come on shuffle. a friend of mine said she cannot listen to artists who have passed because it feels too strange and most of the time i agree but this time, it’s so so different. this album would have been mac’s salvation, i can feel it. everything would have been a bit brighter and lighter for him after this, it would have had to be. i feel like i would do him a disservice if i did not listen to this album, so i will cherish this final gift from him as his legacy and my comfort. i miss him incredibly and am all the more thankful he shared his heart with us.

loona - [#] (mini album) ah yes, the most controversial loona release to date! i’m not gonna lie and say this sounded anything like i expected it to. but also, i have come to terms with the fact that loona release noise music now and personally i am here for it. why not did not have the endless energy of hi high or otherworldly vibe of butterfly, but it’s a hype song and i am always there for hype. i also have to say the b-sides were not as strong for me as on previous releases but i think i have to come to peace with the fact that loona will never top their debut mini for me. though if i can wish for one thing…… let loona have title tracks with a chorus in 2021? pls? crumbs?

tame impala - the slow rush (album) *lights cigarette* i’m listening to pretty underground music….i don’t think you’ve heard of this band….they are called tame impala *intro of the less i know the better starts playing* yes i am a basic white bitch and listen to like 3 alternative bands but damn i listen to them religiously. like any other basic bitch on this planet i found out about tame impala through the less i know the better and checked out their music. i wasn’t too much into this album as i was into currents but towards the end of the year, i was in a moody alternative music slump that took me back to this album and i like it a lot more now! most importantly, tame impala fulfills my primitive urge to listen to songs that exceed the 4 minute mark. something clicks in my brain when i see a song that is like 6:34 and chances that it ends up as one of my faves on a album are high. i enjoy tiktok like everyone else but this trend of 2:50 long songs needs to be stopped immediately.

nct 127 - neo zone (album) ah, yes. the album that fundamentally changed me as a person <3 i’ve been listening to nct for a while, matter of fact i checked my top tracks 2019 playlist on spotify and cherry bomb was on there lol. i remember trying to get into them in 2018 when they released their regular-irregular album but the endless member & unit concept scared me off, so i only listened to a handful of songs without looking into them march 2020, the fateful month in which they released kick it and screencaps of jaehyun’s sexy ass tiddies in the kick it mv landed on my tumblr or twitter and i HAD to look up who this man is…...remember when i thought jaehyun was my ult for like, 2 weeks? me neither, johnny suh only in this house <3

anyway, i checked out this album and by god, is this pure kpop perfection. last time i listened to a god tier no skip album like this was … maybe the perfect red velvet? hype songs, well crafted ballads, love songs that make me wanna learn the lyrics, genuinely fun and interesting pop songs, this album has it all. somehow, the way this album is crafted greatly reminds me of brown eyed girls’ sound-g, it has the same vibe, concept and mix of genres to me, i’m not entirely sure how to explain. anyway, this album is one of my favorites of all time and even though i’ve obsessively listened to it (lastfm says 1.4k scrobbles as of today, december 7th…) i am still not tired of this. i recommend this to anyone who loves kpop tbh, you will have a good time with this!

other than being just a musically solid album, the emotional ties i have with this are …. isabel stop making albums your emotional support 2021 challenge. i’ve listened to this release all spring lockdown, this basically played at every waking hour for all of march and april. the promotion time of this era and lockdown are deeply intertwined for me and so i am always remembered of all the nct content i consumed during that time which inevitably cheered me up so much. this album really means a lot to me :’)

the weeknd - after hours (album) my dear melchanoly, was one of my favorite releases of 2018, so i had been desperate for a new release by abel and boy did he not disappoint. the perfect thotty, dirty emo 80s, making it clap while crying in the club album! this is a no skip from top to bottom and all i can say is that the grammys can go to hell <3 abel aoty! there is really not much i can say about this album, the flawless production, lyrics and sound speak for themself. my only criticism is that i feel overwhelmed by 14 songs, especially when some of them are really long. a few songs greatly overshadow the weaker tracks on the album for me but i still love this to death.

dua lipa - future nostalgia (album) after the weeknd’s masterpiece of an 80s inspired pop album i was really looking forward to this. i greatly enjoyed the pre-releases, i played don’t start now and physical up and down, they are still some of my favorite songs released this year! when i first listened to the album i really liked it, songs like boys will be boys or pretty please sound like fillers to be but the rest is solid. yet a month after release you couldn’t catch me listening to this and i cannot even really tell you why. i think it was a combination of the following: 1) i greatly overplayed dsn and physical to the point where i didn’t want more of the pop 80s sound that the album has 2) there were other releases at the time that caught my attention and interest more like neo zone or after hours 3) dua herself….girl….she really gave it her all this year to make herself as unlikeable as possible. nationalist propaganda and the constant traveling during a fucking pandemic were really the kicker. i can barely stand seeing her on my instagram feed anymore, much less listen to her album. her having the nerve to go “we’re in a pandemic lol” when people asked about an animated music video …. if you don’t shut the hell up lmao … also, she takes the crown for the corniest album opener of all time. i nearly closed spotify when i heard future nostalgia (the song) lmao

rina sawayama - xs (song) i feel like i’m gonna catch some hands here … xs is an absolute banger, the guitar riffs and disruptive sounds really get me going every damn time! but the rest of the album … tell me why it doesn’t catch me?! i literally cannot explain. i need to take an hour, sit down and do nothing but listen to the album from top to bottom once again and see if my thoughts change but right now i only care about xs.

chungha - stay tonight (song) drama! vocals! dance break! choreography! this release served it all. i listened to this obsessively during the time of the release and it still holds up today. can we talk about the run chungha had with gotta go > snapping > stay tonight? lord have mercy.

lady gaga - chromatica (album) the immense disappointment i have in this album is tough to put into words lol. any other artist might have gotten away with this release but gaga having the discography that she has, well … she doesn’t get away with it. this has underwhelming all over it. i enjoyed the pre-releases and my hope was high but the rest just doesn’t live up what i expected, i can’t even say why. it’s just underwhelming pop for someone of gaga’s calibre. i listened to this album during release week and then never again till december to write this list and i can see why.

baekhyun - delight (mini album) it’s confession time … this is a name i never would have expected on any of my music lists to end up. exo has always been one of those boy groups i casually listened to. i greatly enjoy their title tracks and a handful of side tracks, i have a few members that i keep an eye on more than others but that’s about it. baekhyun was never one of those members i had any interest in, matter of fact i always thought he was kinda vanilla and boring 😭 i didn’t even plan on listening to this release if it wasn’t for his association with superm and thus nct, so i gave it a shot and we have no choice but to stan. his voice is like butter and can cut sharp at the same time, his versatility is insane. i dived a bit more into baekhyun related content and he is so likeable, it’s almost ridiculous. this production is absolute god tier, not a single skip on this mini. late spring/early summer i had this weird urge to listen to songs with mellow voices but still a banger instrumental and i wholeheartedly blame this release. matter of fact, this album is so good, i had to buy a physical copy. Y’ALL. THIS IS A BIG DEAL. i haven’t bought a kpop album of anyone that’s not holy top 3 (brown eyed girls, loona, nct) in like … idk, 5 years?! baekhyun’s impact. i’m a fan now <3

stray kids - go live (album) 2020 was kind of the year of boy groups for me, i’m so sorry … stray kids promoted simultaneously with nct 127 so i ended up hearing their title track and holy hell, is that a song. god’s menu is hype from start to finish. it reminds me of good ol’ 2nd gen noise boy group song a lá b*g b*ng fantastic baby. just pure hype and fun noise. i am forever grateful to witness the birth of the line cooking like a chef, i’m a five star michelin. the title track impressed me so much that i ended up checking out the entire album which i rarely ever do with boy groups and what is even rarer is that i enjoyed the b sides lmao!!! it’s not an album that i would put on and just enjoy from start to finish but it has some really solid tracks! this release made me want to keep an eye on stray kids, they seem like a really fun bunch.

irene & seulgi - monster (mini) this is a weird release because it’s good. the title track is fun enough, the b sides are dope. but my issue with this is that it’s nothing new. this sounds exactly like a red velvet release. i get that they didn’t want to a  joy, seulgi, irene, yeri release only and went for the sub-unit route instead, but why not be experimental and stray away from the usual sound of the group? also, whoever made monster and not naughty the title track deserves to be spat on. at least the choreography here is more interesting and “experimental” for kpop standards. also, why only a seulgi solo and no irene? i have no idea how reveluvs reacted to this release but this has rushed written all over it.

blackpink - the album (album, duh) i don’t even know what to say about this … this might be the weirdest release on the list for me. there are song i absolutely fucking hate (ice cream …) and songs i get my life to (pretty savage) on here and the discrepancy just gives me massive whiplash. i would never put this album on and listen to the whole body of work, i just cannot with the brain damage it gives me. i am still stuck in 2016, begging for bp to release music like whistle/boombayah/stay/playing with fire but i think i need to give up on that wishful thinking … i am just grateful we a got a title track with actual lyrics in the chrous for once.

nct - nct 2020 resonance pt. 1 (album) this era was … a ride. nct 2020 happening was near inevitable but with covid it got pushed back so far, i started to believe it wasn’t even going to happen. i was semi-terrified of what was going to happen during a comeback with 21 (now 23!!) member group since i only experienced nct 127 comebacks so far and uhh … a LOT happened lmfao but let’s keep this about the album … i had no idea what was going to hit me. johnny having effectively 3 lines in nct 2018 did not give me much hope and after he got denoted to no line treatment in punch again, i was ready to not even have any expectation but this release changed everything. make no mistake that most of my favorite songs are units with johnny, we knew that was gonna happen lmaooo they dropped the teaser video for misfit and i thought i had my favorite song in the bag and then faded in my last song happened. y’all. JOHNNY SINGS? LIKE? ACTUALLY SINGS? DOESN’T GET FORCED TO RAP OR TALK-SING? MY MAN’S VOCALS??? OH MY GAAAAHD! this song is dramatic, theatrical, emo, it serves vocals and rap, it has catchy english and korean lyrics, this is THE song, the ULTIMATE song. i love this song so much, i want to belt it on top of my lungs in the pouring rain. apart from fimls, i also loveeee misfit, that was to be expected after i was going completely insane over the track video. johnny has like 3 lines but again they are iconic (WARNIN’! NCT WE MOBBIN’!) and i just enjoy the track too much to be upset over that. nectar. holy fuck. nectar!!!! wayv never disappoints with their thotty songs, they now have an absolute god tier hoe-ly song trinity with love talk > bad alive > nectar. the first chorus and hendery’s first verse (CHOP CHOP CHOP!) get me every time, this song is so insanely good i am severely upset i cannot sing along to it :( music, dance has nct 127 written all over it in bold letters, it’s so inherently 127’s sound!!!! i love this song so much, it’s so fun, upset and has massive dance-ability, i wish we had gotten a stage for it but i guess you can’t have everything in life </3 make a wish……………………………..the cursed unit. i don’t want to say anything about this except that, unfortunately, the song is fun and i enjoy it. the end. overall, this album is so insanely solid. i know i talk about my favorites A LOT but i genuinely do not dislike a single song on here, this is an absolute no skip album! that’s it. see you for resonance part 2!!!!!

loona - 12:00 (mini album) controversial loona release 2.0! i don’t know what it is, but somehow they managed to lace the words di da dam di dam di dam dam dam dam di dam (yeah) with pure crack. i fucking love why not, i would even go as far to say it’s my 2nd favorite title track. that is right, i think it’s better than butterfly (btw: hi high > why not > butterfly > so what). so much was strange this comeback, from the inexplicable concept + teasers, the outfits, the styling (yves….i mourn your hot girl era) but the title track is just SO good, SO fun, SO catchy that i am willing to ignore it all. i also enjoy the b sides much more than on #, they are much more memorable to me. and now … HASEUL RETURN…………….i purely live to see the next loona comeback at this point

ariana grande - positions (album) the way this album has people upset is so funny. i am a huge dangerous woman fan myself, it’s my fave ariana album to date but she has said repeatedly that this is not the sound she is striving for. now she has her coin and can do whatever she wants in music and if that is r’n’b then fuck! we have to live with it! lmao! i can live with the sex theme of the album because it’s delivered in a fun way? but it’s getting a bit old...if the next album is about riding dick only too idk how much i would enjoy that. i would probably always come back to ari because i like her voice so much but girl, there are other topics to sing about, i promise! anyway! i like this album, it’s one of those where i can hit shuffle and enjoy it in the background while doing other stuff.

noel - push (ep) this is something i absolutely did not expect. noel (of tiny meat gang!) released his first ep ever and i was absolutely wowed. noel has it all, the voice, the talent, the creativity and all it took him was the confidence to finally put something out and i’m so happy he did. he gets real personal on bus back, more than ever before and i always get a bit emo listening to this track </3 this man is gonna go places and i’m so happy to witness his journey.

nct - nct 2020 resonance pt. 2 (album) part two, baby! we made it! part 2 had more mellow, ballad-y songs with my everything, i.o.u. and all about you, overall less drama than part 1 but i still enjoyed it. work it is one of those controversial songs where you despise it with your entire being or you defend this top tier noise till the end and i am absolutely the latter. the agony of not being able to listen to it and seeing the timeline so divided nearly killed me, but i have concluded that people who hate work it have never felt joy in their life <3 honestly my opinion cannot be counted because i eat up anything johnny participates in … biased ass… what i’m not gonna talk about is resonance (the song), this absolute mess of a “remix”. the audacity sm had to release this as a single is insane. anyway!! this era was a rollercoaster ride. all the interactions truly made me interested in members of other units more. hendery (the rise and fall …), yangyang my beautiful son, jeno aka blue hair guy, chenle the chaos kid and xiaojun after he made make a wish his bitch in particular! all the interactions between the units were so fun to witness and it was fun while it lasted but i am … so glad it’s over lol. i miss nct 127, i miss some peace, i hope the boys get to rest for a bit and so does my bank account.

miley cyrus - plastic hearts (album) not in a thousand years would i have expected a miley release to be on here. this girl does everything to be absolutely unlikeable in my eyes but after severely banging out to her heart of glass cover, i was really excited for this and it did not disappoint. what is disappointing is that it took her so long to find a sound that fits her like a glove. i believe many people miss out on this release after her previous history and i nearly would have done the same. this alt/rock influenced pop does her voice so many favors and i really hope she sticks to this direction, i love this album greatly!!

tame impala - currents (album, 2015) everyone’s favorite basic alt bitch album! i enjoyed this more than the slow rush for a good chunk of time, it also fit right into my alt rock autumn mood. i really love this album, like previously mentioned it has my favorite long ass tracks on there but also a good amount of short or medium long tracks. i’m still busy enjoying currents and the slow rush but i can’t wait till i finally take the leap to dive into their other releases because i’m loving everything i’ve heard so far.

joji - ballads 1 (2018) after liking nectar so much, checking joji out was a given and i just love this album. only when i listened to this i realized i heard slowly dancing in the dark a few times on tiktok lmao that cursed app man … i would say i love nectar a bit more but this is still a fantastic album!!

jus2 - focus (mini album, 2019) in my “mellow moody bangers” phase i was scouring playlists for more songs and i think i found focus on me first which fitted right into the niche i was looking to fill and i ended up enjoy this whole release! only later i realized this is a sub-unit from got7 lmao how come i enjoy solo or unit releases by got7 members but their group discography never interested me? anyway, very sexy ep!

baekhyun - city lights (mini album, 2019) i am repenting for my sins of missing out on baekhyun releases by consuming his music at an exorbitant rate. un village is one hell of a title track that i didn’t appreciate before, but i feel like in 2020 my music interests started to vary and i love the groovy r’n’b and string sound of this song so much. i also love stay up to death, the vocals baekhyun serves here are unreal. his BABY WE CAN STAY UP!!!!!!! gets me every single time!!!! what a mini!

mac miller - swimming (album, 2018) i’ve listened to this album before 2020 but i had the urge to put this on here. this is going to sound so corny, but if i had to pick one song to be my life’s title track, it would be ladders. the hope this song gives me is unreal, it feels like a light at the end of the tunnel. this album is so fantastic, i love the upbeat instrumentals paired with sometimes gloomy lyrics are so incredible, mac was truly one of the greatest artists of our time. this album is  so outstanding and i miss him every day.

Goodbye 2019. Hello 2020.

To celebrate the new year - which a lot of people are celebrating right now, I’m sure, unfortunately not me yet - I decided to create this post. I don’t know how to explain it but if you like kpop, keep reading!

My Top 3 Songs of 2019

1. SKZ - Miroh

This song got me into my now ult group, Stray Kids. Those 9 boys have honestly made this year 10x better for me. Chan’s VLives definitely helped me when I was upset, and the members made me feel emotions by their side. I’m so glad that add of Miroh appeared and I chose to watch it because I may have not gotten into Stray Kids without it. 

2. ATEEZ - Wave

Again, another song that got me into the group. I heard the song in a video where they played huge jenga at Kcon... I think? Anyways, this song is another banger and you completely fall in love with it first listen. You won’t regret listening to this.

3. TWICE - Fancy

I got into TWICE when they released YES OR YES, but FANCY is the song that you can’t not fall in love with. I did on my 2nd listen and man, if you’re saying you didn’t learn the dance and bopped to this song, you are LYING because- let’s be honest - everyone said FANCY SOTY.

Stray Kids - March 26th. You think I would forget? 

ATEEZ - August 18th. Another date I remember, because I spent a good 2 hours getting to memorize the members name and faces. Was so happy when I finally did it. 

iKON - Honestly, I was more of a Double B stan since January until Hanbin left. I loved their songs but I never got to know the rest of the members, except for Jinhwan. 

ChungHa - Snapping dragged me in. That’s all I gotta say. Although, ngl, Gotta Go was something I always tried to dance to. 

KARD - Again, Bomb Bomb just pulled me into the fandom. The rest of their discography made me stay. I sang along to Bomb Bomb everyday for a good 3 months. It was honestly EVERYTHING to me and then Dumb Litty came and stole my heart and KARD did it AGAIN.

Mamamoo - gogobebe. Do I really need to say anything else?

GOT7 - I’m pretty sure I got into them because, well everyone knows GOT7. They’re a name everyone knows if you like kpop, so I just wanted to get into them. Eclipse and You Calling My Name are songs I’ll dance and singalong to in the right mood and right part of the song. But their personalities dragged me in. I’m pretty sure BamBam also attracted me when he was on Stray Kids reality show. 

Day6 - Time Of Our Life. I decided to listen to it because Seungmin of Stray Kids was a big fan of them and I was like, it shouldn’t hurt to try. Seungmin made me want to watch and Day6 made me want to stay. They don’t make ANY bad songs. 

Everglow - March 18. Listened to Bon Bon Chocolat when it came out, and I was honestly scared ppl were gonna sleep on them cause ITZY debuted a month before. Fortunately, everyone noticed their talent. 

BigBang - I dunno just listened to one of their songs. And, of course, I fell in love. Too late to stan them while they were active, but I’m expecting something in 2020... just saaying.

NCT - All of the subunits. Honestly there were so many of them, I spent time taking tests to tell them apart. The struggle to stan these boys. Instantly fell in with the Dreamies. And then I found out they weren’t a fixed unit... My heart shattered. It’s still breaking because 4 OF THEM ARE LEAVING. or left. I dunno. 

Tomorrow by Together - They were probably the most anticipated group of this year. I remember ppl hyping them up in October of 2018! Predebut stan right here. (I just remembered that I thought the preview of each member was coming out in age order and thinking that Beomgyu was the youngest. And I was just like WHERE IS HEUNINGKAI FROM?!?!)

ITZY - remember when everyone thought that itzy’s debut was rushed because info about them was leaked. yeah, i forgot too. anyways, again I was a predebut stan. 

(G)- idle - i always listened to their title tracks and I began stanning them during Queendom after their Fire cover im listening to 2ne1 2015 mama fire performance rn lol.... omg bom’s han cover just started playing. spotify is watching me guys.

Somi - Birthday was a bop. fight me. outfits sucked, gotta agree with that opinion I didn’t rlly know much about IOI but I started stanning because Jenchu were fangirling to it i mean jennie twerked for it!

Jimin Park - I’m out here still streaming STAY BEAUTIFUL. honestly she’s so loveable. her personality and her voice are everything. how can you not like her

My Top 5 Groups of the Year

1. STRAY KIDS - A lot of the reasons I luv them are the same as ATEEZ. That’s why ateez are close to being my number one, but honestly these 9 boys are everything to me. 9 or NONE FOREVER. They have been through so much this year and I hope they STAY strong for 2020. In their 2020 seasons greeting they announced a full album next year, so I’m ready to follow these boys on their journey no matter how many stay or leave. I’m a STAY for a reason. 

2. ATEEZ - PERSONALITY. I’m also a sucker for groups that shove their love for each other in your face. 8 makes 1 team, y’know? Hongjoong and Mingi are amazing rappers, Jongho, Wooyoung and San’s vocals tho, Yunho and Seonghwa’s deep voices are the death of me, and Yeosang dancing. They’re talented and luvable and that’s all I need for an ult group. also all their songs are bops

3. Mamamoo - Honestly would’ve tied with Twice but these I’m a sucker for them as ppl as well, and I need that to luv a group. they ain’t fake, they slap information in your face and they are POWERFUL WOMAN. (Not saying twice aren’t ofcourse) And these girls vocals are on POINT. Moonbyul is rapper material, but have you heard the girl song? What an angel. Their songs are all slaps, especially the most recent ones. 

4. TWICE - This was their year? yes or yes. Fancy soty. Feel Special was a great title track, don’t get me wrong, bUT HAVE YOU HEARD THE FULL ALBUM. Every song is my AMAZING. omg rainbow is playing

5. NCT DREAM - These boys stole my heart, I only stanned nct because of them. Honestly seeing the 00 line leave breaks my heart.

My Top 5 girl group and boy group songs

gg songs were honestly so hard to pick, they thrived and SO many good songs were made in 2019. But here is my list. 

1. Fancy - soty

2. Hip - this song was everything from the choreo to the song itself to the girls energy performing it

3. Psycho - came out like last week but it’s in everyone's top 10 of this year. Beautiful song that won’t get outta my head. getwellsoonwendy.

4.Violeta - this is another song that won’t get out of my head. honestly none of these songs will. ok so the final dance part after the drop of violeta pisses me off because the dance could is so powerful and that part comes and it’s such a disappointment but it’s the only part I can do so i shouldn't complain  but the song itself is very catchy. I don’t want these girls to disband even if the votes were rigged because they make a good group and sing bangers. i don't want them to leeeave.

5.Lion - the song is just so powerful. other songs they’ve made are good, but the chorus is usually a disappointment because the pre chorus is so good but EVERYTHING is great about Lion. Didn’t like it at first for some reason, i dunno why, but once you give it a few more listens you’ll fall in love. 

Now onto the boy groups. They made quite a few bangers this year as well.

1. Miroh - It’s my no.1 of the year. watchu expect?

2. Wave - and this is my no.2. Again, what else would I put here?

3. Run Away - what. a. bop. still can’t get out of my head. Crown was a disappointment to me after 1000 listens but not Run Away. A bonus is the Harry Potter references. With that I just was head over heels in love. Txt didn’t fail to disappoint with their comeback even if it was pushed back. 

4. Boom - This song made me fall in love with the talent that NCT DREAM holds despite being so young. Sang along for a few months. Actually, it’s still in my head. 

5. Make It Right - I was doing title tracks for all these but then I realised there has to be an exception because I just really like this song, especially the one featuring Lauv. Boy with luv wasn’t it for me but every other song on Persona is a straight up masterpiece (ok an exaggeration but u get what i mean)

Now onto the soloists (they’re all female, sry not sry)

1. Chica - I was debating whether to put Snapping or this but decided with Chica. Honestly the vocals, the song, the dance, the MESSAGE, is everything. I love it, it empowers woman, it makes ME feel good, and it’s what some people really need sometimes. So, thank you ChungHa. 

2. Gotta Go - another bop by our queen ChungHa, she really ruled this year. I didn’t stan her when it came out but that doesn’t mean I didn’t do the ‘deulshi’ part whenever I heard it. iconic.

3. Twit - Again another iconic bop from this year. (i thought this masterpiece came out last year, i dunno why but it just is so 2018 for some reason? I dunno) Hwasa’s solo debut really was everything. So was Moonbyul’s which unfortunately didn't make it on the list but I would say it’s in between 5th to 7th for me. 

4. Stay Beautiful - Such a beautiful song, it was a shame Jamie had to leave but she left JYP saying that they lost smth PRECIOUS and they would regret it and she conveyed all that in one song without hinting at it. So many quote worthy lyrics were in the song and it just bring up my mood and my standard for vocals. Don’t sleep on this girl, y’all. 

5. Birthday - the song brought out mixed reactions from everyone but i LOVED IT. It did get a bit old but it’s still something you’ll find me singing along to every now and then. 

ARTISTS THAT STOOD OUT TO ME THIS YEAR 

1. Bang Chan of Stray Kids. I love him. He’s such a great leader, he’s a loveable person, he’s all rounded and he fucks up sometimes but he acknowledges it and fixes it. He went through so much shit this year and he deserves so much more. I, along with many other STAYs are gonna make 2020 a better year for him and all of his group. Stay strong Chan! But besides his personality his stage presence, his rapping, his singing, his producing, his energy, his personality, it all made him someone who was always on my mind. 

2. Yeonjun of Tomorrow x Together. He’s also very well rounded and he really stands out to me from all the other 4th gens. Whenever I see a performance by TXT he always grabs my attention even when he’s not the main focus. I love his dancing, it’s very eye catching to me, along with his stage presence. He never loses his energy on stage and I expect a lot from him in 2020! His rapping and singing are amazing as well, especially for a rookie. Also when they first debuted he cried a lot, which was very heartwarming to me because idols showing emotion other than happy is something I appreciate, because it lets me remember they’re human too.

3. Seulgi of Red Velvet. She’s, again, very well rounded. I’m not really a Reveluv, but Wendy and Seulgi are vocalists who really stand out to me so those to kind of make me want to listen to Red Velvet’s songs. She’s an amazing vocalist, like words can’t express how much a love this woman's voice. Her stage presence is amazing as well, she’s just a really good performer imo.

4. Jihyo and Nayeon of TWICE. First of all I really like their personality and how powerful they are. Honestly a wink from them and I’m falling of my chair. Secondly, I don’t know if anyone's noticed but I really like powerful female vocals, and these two have extremely POWERFUL vocals. Have you heard them sing? Just... POWERFUL, that’s all I can really say to describe their voices. 

5. Mingi and Hongjoong of ATEEZ. They are rapper that are gonna blow away the whole industry with 3racha, I mean they already have. Did y’all see their performance in MAMA. The RAWEST vocals I heard that whole show. They were obviously not lip syncing, you could hear Mingi panting and he didn’t rap a whole line, and I LOVE that because it is RAW and we need more raw vocals or atleast breaths heard when the artists are dancing because it makes the performance more REAL. also stage presence is amazing from these two, they really know how to hype up a crowd. 

ROOKIE GROUPS I EXPECT A LOT FROM NEXT YEAR

sorry my expectations are high for them, but they have stood out tome so much and i couldn’t stand to see them flop. 

1. TOMORROW X TOGETHER - they’ve been on this list quite a lot, and I really appreciate their individual talents along with them as a group. I REALLY want to see them improve and grow more next year because they were really pushed this year, being BTS’s juniors. I’m sure they were really stressed but I want them to become TOMORROW BY TOGETHER not BTS’s juniors. Probably won’t happen in a year but hopefully in the next decade.

2. ITZY - another group really known for theing the juniors of TWICE this time. The title tracks they released so far have all been listen to it the first time, you don;t like it, but listen to it the 2nd time and it’s stuck in your head for the next 7 months. Honestly if they keep going like this, it would be like a ITZY thing, and I honestly wouldn’t mind. 

3. EVERGLOW - i think everyone just saw bon bon chocolat, gave it a listen, and loved it. but i also heard it was produced by someone who helped produce Crown by TXT and Spring Day by BTS, so there’s another reason ppl may have liked it so much. Adios wasn’t a disappointment at all.  Of course, I would also love it if Everglow kept up the “nanana” thing in each of their title tracks.

4. ATEEZ - I don’t think they’ll flop at all next year. I know they just had their 1st year anniversary, but I wouldn’t mind a full album... either way, Imma stick with them because they’ve only released that good shit so far and I’m honestly expecting a somewhat mediocre song at least once in their career next year. Not expecting it though. 

5. ONEUS - I haven’t’t talked about them yet but all of oneus’s title tracks are absolute gold. I am a mess for Valkyrie, Twilight AND Lit. They’re all just AMAZING songs. I mean, what did we expect from Mamamoo’s juniors but. They are REALLY good. Just go listen to all their title tracks rn. 

And finally, wishes for 2020

- Of course, Wendy to recover after her tragic incident at SBS. Again, I hope she recovers well

- Mina to come back from her hiatus, only if she’s ready to, of course

- BLACKPINK FULL ALBUM. ROSE SOLO. PLEASE.

- Of course, 4th gen to thrive along with 3rd gen and 2nd gen groups

- A full album from stray kids (which was confirmed) and again, maybe for ATEEZ? just maybe? 

- More attention for Mamamoo. They are underrated queens. 

- Less hate for Tomorrow By Together. People bash them just because they’re BTS’s juniors. they would be praised a less but definitely not doubted way more if they weren’t under Bighit. Yeah, they get luxuries other groups won’t but that doesn’t mean people should degrade them for it.

Whichever way you look at it, these 10 groups are flourishing in the latest era of K-Pop. 1. ITZY  ITZY debuted in 2019 under JYP Entertainment and demanded audience’s attention to the rookie stage with their single “Dalla Dalla.”   2. Stray Kids  As JYP Entertainment’s newest boy group, Stray Kids may be one of the groups considered a contender for the latest generation despite officially debuting back in 2017.   3. Treasure  After surviving the reality show YG Treasure Box in 2018 to 2019, Treasure will be YG Entertainment’s latest boy group who is set to debut August 7th, 2020.   4. TXT  Bighit Entertainment’s newest boy group TXT was unveiled to the world in 2019 with their single, “Crown.”   5. (G)I-DLE  (G)I-DLE is Cube Entertainments’s newest girl group who made their fiery debut in 2018 with “Latata.”   6. Cravity  Cravity became Starship Entertainment’s latest boy group in 2020 with their extended play “Season 1. Hideout: Remember Who We Are.”   7. VERIVERY  Debuting at the beginning of 2019, Jellyfish Entertainment’s VERIVERY released “Ring Ring Ring.”   8. LOONA  From October 2016 until June 2018, each member of Blockberry Creative’s only group LOONA was revealed one by one.   9. ATEEZ  In 2018, ATEEZ of KQ Entertainment arrived on the music scene with their dual debut songs “Pirate King” and “Treasure.”   10. Year in Review: The Known

We have covered the ones you may not have heard of. These, on the other hand, are not particularly unknown. In fact, I would suspect many people have heard them. And if you haven’t, I would say that I’m mildly surprised, and also you should join the multi-fandom struggle with me. Other people should know this pain.

No honorable mentions, because I put them all in the other category, and this one felt complete without.

10. Jopping by SuperM - I was uncertain about the whole ‘Avengers of K-pop’ thing. And frankly speaking, I still hate the concept on the whole. But between Baekhyun showing off, and Mark spitting the most memeable verse of the year, Jopping is an entire bop. And the chorus is *chef’s kiss.

9. Valkyrie by ONEUS - So, there were some solid debuts this year. And ONEUS was one of the best ones. With tight vocals, and bumping melodies, it is easy to see the appeal. Add a dose of talent, and a bit of crowd appeal, and you get Valkyrie. Also, a reason to google the word Valkyrie.

8. Superhuman by NCT 127 - I sometimes love NCT. Not always, and sometimes they annoy me till I grudgingly like them. In this case, they put out a SHINee song, and I love it. Because the harmonies are not what NCT has done. But they are one of my favorite tropes, so there is that.

7. You Calling My Name by GOT7 - This is a late entry, and maybe it is a little bit fueled by the aesthetic of the whole thing, but damn. It is a solid song that does a great job of using the talents of each of the members of the group damn near perfectly. It is no wonder that it got so many views so quickly.

6. Bomb Bomb by KARD - KARD was out with the thot songs this year. And while I almost gave this spot to Dumb Litty, I couldn’t ignore the instant appeal of Bomb Bomb. I loved this song from the instant I heard it, and it played on repeat in my car for months. Hell, it was part of the soundtrack of my summer.

5. Bon Bon Chocolat by Everglow - Let’s talk about a debut. This song was a hit, but I didn’t get it until May. And because of that, every time I looked back, I assumed it that it came out last year. Instead, it fits into the new style of hardcore girl groups, and does it with all the certainty of a much more established group. It is a statement of a debut.

4. Me by CLC - CLC continues to show that they are not out to play games. In fact, they are here to take names. And honestly, it is great for an anthem to have girl power written not just in the melody, but in the lyrics as well. In a year where they put out 3 solid tracks, the choice of this one was hard all on its own.

3. Boy With Luv by BTS - Honestly, I haven’t liked a BTS track this much since Spring Day. There is a lot of bubble pop on this list, and this is the closest that the boys got this year for me. If Bomb Bomb played all summer, this song was on right after. And for good reason. It is the first summery song from BTS that I’m totally behind. 

2. Eung Eung by Apink - This song came out January 7th, and is still one of the best songs of the year. Which honestly is a feat in of itself, because this year had some solid releases. I love the combination of dreamy vocals and electronic beats. And the chorus is super addicting. It is easily my favorite Apink track ever, and one of my favorite girl group tracks of the last few years.

1. Home by Seventeen - This song, also from damn near the beginning of the year, set the tone for what I wanted from K-pop for a whole year. I spent the entire year wanting another song to subvert my expectations so fully as this one. The chorus fits while also being a complete surprise. And it uses your entire musical knowledge to punch you with simplicity. As soon as I thought about making this list this year, I knew this song was going to be on it, and that it would be very high, if not on top.

A/N: I may do a pair of decade reviews: a song from each year, and a drama from each year . . . mostly because I want to write about dramas, and feel like I could do the same with music, even though I didn’t get into either until 2012.

“Okay, now I’m starting to get really annoyed.” Mya rolled over on Aisha’s bed, dropping her phone next to her.

“Is he still not answering?” Aisha asked, looking down at her.

“No!” Mya exclaimed. “And I know he’s at home right now, so why is he ignoring me?”

Aisha gave a little laugh, looking at the frustration on Mya’s face. She’d been attempting to get through to Yuta for almost an hour, but her boyfriend had yet to pick up the phone.

“He’s probably just busy.” Aisha offered. “Don’t they have a comeback soon?”

“Yeah, but still…” Mya pouted. “I don’t like that he’s not answering.”

Aisha sighed. “Call him one more time, and if he doesn’t answer you’re not allowed to call him. You’ll have to wait until he calls you back.”

“But I-“

“No.”

“But he-“

“No. Enya, darling, you’re starting to look desperate.” Aisha reasoned with her.

“Ugh, fine.” Mya picked her phone back up. “He’d better answer this time.”

She pressed dial and held the phone up to her ear.

It rang once.

“Come on.” Mya tapped her foot on the mattress.

It rang again.

“This isn’t looking promising.” Mya groaned.

And then it was picked up on the third ring.

“Anneyongha-“

Mya cut the person on the other side off. “Where the hell have you been?” She demanded in Japanese.

There was silence for a second before they answered. “Um….we all ordered pizza.”

“Ordered pizza and you’re too busy to-“ Mya realized something, sitting straight up. “Wait a second, you’re not Yuta.” She switched back to Korean. “Who is this?”

“I’m Shotaro.” The boy on the other side of the line introduced himself. “He had his phone charging in the other room so I was just taking it back to him when you called.”

“Huh.” Mya said, before switching again. “You’re Japanese, right?” Yuta had mentioned the newest member of NCT, but she hadn’t spoken to him or even seen a picture yet.

“Yeah. Did Yuta tell- wait…who am I talking to?” It sounded like he stopped walking. “The caller ID was just a snake emoji.”

“That bastard.” Mya mumbled. “I’m Enomoto Mya. Yuta’s girlfriend.”

“The one from Everglow?” He realized. “I should have realized.”

“I mean…the snake emoji is pretty ambiguous.”

“I heard your latest song. It was amazing.”

“Thank you!” Mya gave Aisha an OK sign and leaned back against the wall. “This will be your first album, right? How are you finding it? How are you liking Korea?”

“It’s really nice. All of the guys have been super helpful.”

“Is that my phone?” A muffled voice came through.

“Yes.” The phone was handed off quickly.

“Mya?” Yuta said. “What’s up?”

“What’s up is you’ve been ignoring my calls, and now you’ve interrupted my conversation with Shotaro.”

“With Shotaro?” Yuta looked at the boy next to him, who just shrugged. “I was charging my phone. Have you been calling me?”

“Obviously.” Mya sighed. “Give the phone back to my new friend please. We were discussing restaurants.”

“You were-“

“Yuta…” She warned.

“Right.” He held the phone out. “She wants to talk to you.”

“To me?” Shotaro took the phone. “Um, hello.”

“Hello, again!” Mya grinned. “So anyways, I’m thinking that when your promotions are done, Yuta and I will take you on a little food tour, does that sound good?”

“That sounds amazing. But I don’t want to-“

“Good, ask Yuta.”

Shotaro lowered the phone, covering the speaker. “She wants to know if we can do a food tour.”

“You and her?”

“All three of us, I think.”

Yuta crossed his arms. “Sure.”

“He says that’s okay.”

“Can I have my girlfriend back now?” Yuta held out his hand.

“Oh, right.” Shotaro spoke quickly into the phone. “It was nice to meet you!”

“You too! We’ll hang out soon.” Mya said sweetly.

“Why were you trying to call me?” Yuta asked as soon as he had his phone back.

“Because you’re my boyfriend and I wanted to talk.” Mya frowned. “But it’s fine because I made a new friend.”

“Yeah, why do we have dinner plans with him?”

“I’m just keeping my options open in case my boyfriend keeps ignoring my calls.”

“You’re not going to let me live this down, are you?”

“Not a chance. Now, I’ve been informed that you’re having a pizza party so go back to your friends.”

“What? I thought you wanted to talk?”

“I did. But you have stuff to do and Aisha still has to paint my left hand. So I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

“Okay. Love you.”

“Love you too.” She made a kissing noise into the phone before she hung up.

“I understood like none of that but it sounded super weird.” Aisha reached out for Mya’s hand, shaking a bottle of nail polish with the other.

“I made a new friend.” Mya said simply. “Hey, do we still have any of that glitter top coat?”

“Okay, this thing is officially too small.” Mya declared.

“I think it’s supposed to be tight.” Yiren said, pulling on the straps of her own outfit.

“Tight, sure. But this is obscene.” She turned to face the mirror, trying to pull her top back up. It was a leather corset style top, but it was very tight and incredibly uncomfortable. It didn’t actually show and cleavage, but she felt like it was either going to slip down and expose her or cut off the circulation to her upper half.

“You look hot though.” Aisha offered.

“I appreciate that.” Mya flipped one of her pigtails over her shoulder. “I’ll remember that when I’m trying to cover up all of the bruises from this stupid shirt later.”

“Worth it for the selcas.” Onda was taking selfies against the far wall.

“If I lift my arms for a picture this shirt is going right down.” Mya sighed. “At least we just have a photoshoot left.”

“And then we get to go home and eat!” Yiren cheered.

They’d been at the event all day and had already taped their performance. Now there was just a few little things for them to finish before they would be done with the very exhausting day. It had been so busy that they hadn’t even had time to greet any of the other artists, as they’d just been running around all day.

“Let’s get this done, girls!” Jiwon cheered.

The all hurried over to the stylists to get the last few finishing touches on their hair and makeup. It was important that they try not to look as worn out as they felt.

A knock sounded at the door, but Mya didn’t turn away from her stylist, who was dutifully applying pink lipstick.

“You weren’t going to leave without saying hi to me, where you?” A voice said from right behind her.

“Eonnie!” Mya screeched, launching out of her chair. “What are you doing here?”

Zoey laughed and pulled Mya into a hug. “I’ve been here all day. I kept hoping we’d run into each other but then I heard you guys were leaving soon, so I had to come and say hi.”

“Hi!” Mya beamed, squeezing her waist.

“You girls look amazing.” Zoey addressed the rest of the group. “You killed your performance earlier.”

“Thanks, Sunbaenim.” Mia bowed.

“Monsta X did amazing too.”

“And you look so pretty.” Sihyeon gestured to the older girl nervously.

Zoey just giggled and glanced down at her outfit. “Nah, I have nothing on all of you.”

That was completely not true, of course. Zoey was wearing a pair of oversize, low-slung cargo pants, a black bra and a white sweater cropped high enough to show it off. She also had some intricate body chains resting against her stomach.

“I did want to ask you guys something.” Zoey said, keeping her arm linked with Mya. “I’ve already asked little baby Enya here, but I wanted to run it by you as well.”

“What is it?” Aisha tilted her head.

“I like to post dance covers sometimes, and I was wondering if you’d be okay if I posted a LaDiDa dance cover.” She asked.

“Really?” Jiwon explained. “That would be amazing.”

“It would be such an honor!” Yiren exclaimed.

“I’m glad.” Zoey bowed in thanks. “Sometime in the future, we’ll have to work together. But I have to get going now.”

“Thank you, Sunbae!” Aisha clapped her hands.

“No, thank you guys.” Zoey turned to leave, before she hesitated. “Oh, wait.”

“Did you forget something?” Mya asked.

“Yeah, this.” Zoey pinched Mya’s cheeks in her hands. “You’re doing so good and I’m so proud of you and also are you still bringing your boyfriend over for dinner next week.”

“Yes!” Mya winced through the pain in her face. “If you still want me to.”

“Of course I do. Until I have my own kids, you’re going to be my baby.” Zoey beamed, tugging on her pigtails.

“If I have to.” Mya sounded squished.

Zoey snorted and released her, glancing at the other girls as she walked out of the room. “You ladies take care of her for me.”

“Yes, Sunbaenim!” They called after her.

“My face hurts.” Mya tried to rub some feeling back into her cheeks.

“She’s so cool.” Yiren peeked through the door, watching Zoey disappear from sight.

“You’re going for dinner with her next week?” Mia asked. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Mya nodded. “She invited me and Yuta over to her apartment.”

“Her apartment with S.Coups from Seventeen?” Sihyeon exclaimed.

“Um…yeah. That’s her boyfriend. I haven’t actually met him but-“

“Mimi,” Onda grabbed her arm. “Do you think you can invite her out for dinner, and we can all come along some time?”

“What? Why?”

“Because she’s so cool.” Onda gushed.

“I think I got cooler just by standing near her.” Jiwon nodded.

“Wait, wait, wait.” Mya protested. “I thought I was the cool rapper. Are you replacing me?”

“Absolutely.” Aisha confirmed.

Mia gasped loudly. “Do you think you could get her to record a dance cover with us? That’s literally my dream.”

“She produces, right? She could produce for us!”

“I produce for you!” Mya shouted. “I literally produced the song we’re currently promoting.”

“Yeah, but…we’re used to you.” Yiren teased. “She’s new and pretty.”

“She’s not new.” Mya pouted. “Just for that, I’m never letting you guys meet her again.”

Onda gasped, looking genuinely hurt. “You wouldn’t!”

Mya frowned. “No. But you need to love me more so that I don’t think you’re bored of me.”

“We love you so much.” Sihyeon patted her head. “And your cool friends.”
