I'm so grateful to be able to accept and enjoy the contours of my own body. Dismantling and healing from self-hatred and body dysmorphia has taken me a long, loooong time, but baby I'm here showing up for myself every day!!!

The bad body image days still exist - but I can move through those feelings instead of being dragged down by them. A few bad days will never erase my progress 🫶🏼

Fighting to accept my body, heal my eating disorders, and rewrite the toxic narratives I was taught about self-worth, beauty, and body size has been a hard but extremely worthwhile journey. Honestly it's saved my life.

You CAN change your internal narrative and rewrite your own story with love and acceptance for yourself, and I hope that you do 💗 we deserve love and tenderness from ourselves most of all!!

So, I did a thing last week and changed my profile picture on Instagram to an actual picture of me. I had switched to using my logo a few months after starting this account. It was the first time I had maintained a public social media account in years. The amount of DMs - sexual harassment, creepy messages, body policing - that happened only in those few months made my skin crawl. I was entirely unprepared for it and just opted out entirely by switching to my logo. Hiding behind a series of green and blue dots felt safer. But it also never totally felt right, either. Particularly when my body is such a big part of the work that I do. I elicit patients responses to my body, what it’s like to sit with a therapist in a fat body, and invite them to talk about their bodies. Positive feelings, negative feelings, neutral feelings, observations of internalized beliefs that they intellectually know to be invalid but can’t seem to let go of - all feelings about bodies - and all bodies, period - are welcome in my office. So, it’s only fitting that my body is present on my Instagram account, isn’t it? It feels like a bit of an imperative. 🙄 FAD DIETS. Let’s talk. When I look around on social media and see all the fad diets being pushed onto young people and the “bikini bodies” that they’re supposed to yield, it makes me so, so sad. In fact I get flash backs to when teen magazines like Seventeen or Cosmo Girl would give tips on workouts, diets, and how to dress your apparently misshapen body, and I realize nothing has changed. Have we seriously learnt NOTHING?! And now it’s even worse, because content on social media is constant and pervasive. I feel bad for this generation, having to grow up with this. I’m not saying you can’t work out in an attempt to feel and look good, but somehow this must be balanced with a healthy mindset about what is realistically possible for you. Every BODY is different, and there is LITERALLY someone out there for everyone. People who say otherwise don’t know sh*t about anything. Fad diets only work because they usually encourage under-eating and orthorexic thinking. PLEASE don’t go on a specialised diet unless recommended to you by a doctor, nutritionist or dietitian, you know, PROFESSIONALS — not wannabe “health experts” on Instagram. Seriously! Constantly correct your perspective on your body!

It's hard not to get caught in a societal way of thinking when it comes to your body. It should be this size, this colour.... ect.

Try to remember to correct your thinking when ever you start hating things about your physical appearance. Your body is a vessel for your mind and your soul. It is incredibly resilient and the little intricacies like stretch marks, scars and bruises. They are all reminders of how far you have come and they tell your story.

Respect your body and thank it every day for the life or gives you. It shouldn't matter if the texture of your thighs are toned and smooth or soft and bumpy. Your legs can still take you around the world and if you believe in them.

They just might.

We are all beautiful and we can all be strong!
