the green knight wouldn't exist. gumbald simply wouldn't revive finn. my thinking behind this has to do with the sort of "monkey's paw" of fern's situation, i guess. it gets ruined a bit if finn is revived, because it gives fern the chance to get closure.

If you have ever wondered what Hawaii in the summertime is like… imagine getting up before the sun comes up for an early start. You leave the air conditioned hotel and as the doors slide open, WHOOSH! A blast of hot air hits you in the face so abruptly you can’t breath for a second, glasses fog, condensation leaves a film on your phone or any metal accessories, and a sheen of sweat instantly forms on your exposed skin. So you step back into the hotel air conditioning to get your bearings and wipe off the excess moisture only to instantly gain a shivering chill because of said moisture covering your body because all you are wearing is shorts and a tank top.
