OCI users get improved functionality with Ground-Truth. These include automated threat and vulnerability detection in seconds. The platform uses non-rule-based models and AI-powered processes. If you’re new to operating a dozer, the most crucial thing to learn is how the machine should look, feel, sound, and smell (yes, smell) when it’s in good working order. 3. Dozing from front to rear can save the amount of time you spend operating in reverse by 38%. Instead of backing up for the full cut, you just have to back up for the length of the preceding push plus two tractor lengths.

3. Check the tension on the track

When track chains are too tight, they might wear three times as fast as they would otherwise. While you should consult your operator’s manual for specifications, if your track has a carrier roller, the sag should be at least two inches.

In the case of Cadsuane above, X is the importance of the White Tower. She wants to save the Tower because she cares about it, but the bigger threats have her priority, and she also sees the Tower as important to dealing with those bigger threats.

The flip side of such characterization is that background details are discarded in order to free the character of constraints. A lot of people, when writing fan-fic (or adapting WoT for another medium) {or ghostwriting part of the series} would have an Aes Sedai character who thinks dealing with the Dragon is more important, completely throw off her White Tower background and history, and rip into the Tower and the sisters. Why did she go through all that grueling trouble, how did she pass the tests which require prioritizing the Tower over everything else, if she's such a freethinker as you depict your fave, so ready to blow it off in favor of the thing you, the author, with your objective view of what's important, believe makes her a better or more admirable person than the other sisters?

All the Aes Sedai who do break with the Tower to one degree or another because of Rand (including Nynaeve, Elayne, Moiraine, Siuan, Sashelle, Alanna, Verin, Cadsuane and Merana), still retain this Tower loyalty in their own particular characteristic ways. Because they are fleshed out, multidimensional.

The proof of Jordan's ability as a writer is that I did not need to actually read that note to know the things it reveals about Cadsuane. They are all there to be noticed in the novels themselves.

Just a couple notes on the OP's excellent points.

Regarding the emotional issues with Elayne, we see that they are undermining her confidence in her judgment, when she brings up her plan to send the sul'dam who have been made to accept they can channel, back to the Seanchan, to force the Seanchan to confront that sul'dam can channel, in hopes of undermining the whole system. And when she is met with skepticism, she worries that her perspective on her plan is being warped by her pregnancy emotions. Except she had the same ideas and the same plan, back when she first got the Seanchan captives from Taim, and mentions them in Winter's Heart, at a point in the story when she was still a virgin, and completely free of pregnancy hormones. Furthermore, in that same book, Egeanin speculates that the word spreading that sul'dam can channel will have just the effect that Elayne hopes. (Jordan seems to love doing this - set up a defense or counter-argument to criticism for his main characters, in a book or two before the criticism or skepticism comes up: see for example, Rand's Aiel credentials) But this is an example of how the pregnancy stuff is making things harder for her, how she has to deal with questions of her judgment that other characters, or even herself at other times, are unlikely to face.

The other is about how radical Elayne supposedly isn't in her career, as opposed to her personal life, but she's done a lot of new and different things, even while laboring under the need to meet certain expectations and conform to traditions and customs, and lacking the power to do much before she is crowned.

She plans to make the Queen's Guard larger. This doesn't sound like a big deal in the face of the threats she has to confront, from the challenges to her claim, to the risk of the Seanchan, and the certainty of Tarmon Gaidon, but Dyelin reacts as she does for a reason. Because the Queen's Guard is a standing professional military force, which seems to be something of a no-go in the setting, deliberately kept small, with rulers relying on levies from their noble supporters when going to war. Elayne is moving Andor closer to a national army, a component of a more modern nation-state. She also founded a royal bodyguard, essentially splitting that function off from the Queen's Guards, which, in fact, from the name, is their intended primary purpose. While it originated as merely guards for Elayne in a time of danger, it is clear as of KoD, that it has become an institution. And by creating a ceremonial and personal protection force, effectively relieving the Queen's Guard of those duties, she is helping to transform the Queen's Guard into more strictly an instrument of war and regime enforcement. Similarly, she intends to establish a postal service, and assumes patronage of the school Rand founded, which, the way things are going, would tie to the crown and make it a national institution. Considering this is a story about a fantasy apocalypse against an evil god and genetically engineered monsters, and Elayne is at best, the quintagonist, if that's a word, that's a lot of government reform and nationalization from someone who doesn't have the throne yet.

Also, her employment of gateways for political purposes and tactical and logistical military purposes is an enormous innovation. Rand uses gateways tactically in tPoD, and Egwene orders their use strategically in the same books, while the rebel Aes Sedai have been using Skimming for communications purposes, but concerns about availability of supplies in whatever area they happen to be passing through is a recurring issue in each book of Egwene's journey with the rebels. The hundreds of Aes Sedai and auxiliary personnel with the camps seem to have all failed to think up Elayne's solution to supply problems. Also, the use of the gateways to conduct what amounts to a campaign tour, while technically besieged in her capital city has to be unique even by modern transportation standards. Monarchies have had the concept of a royal progress, but that's more in the nature of a moving court, as the king, and with him, the government, travels around to keep an eye on things and be accessible to his subjects. Elayne is using her own Traveling version to carry out a cross between a royal visit and a modern meet-and-greet, to make a positive impression on those she intends to lead through the worst times in Andor's history.

Elayne might merely be doing the job she was expected and intended to do, but she is rising to meet unprecedented challenges, in completely new ways, with an impressive degree of flexibility and innovation. It's rather a perfect setup for her to become the royal patron of the first artillery development in their world, and to establish her as the best choice for commander-in-chief for Tarmon Gaidon.

Elayne (Knife of Dreams)

Reading through Elayne’s chapters in Knife of Dreams, I noticed a different vibe to her story (compared with the stories of Egwene, Rand, Mat and Perrin) and I started wondering: how much of this is due to Elayne’s personality, how much is due to her pregnancy, and how much is due to other factors? Writing out my thoughts seemed like a good idea at the time, so here we go…

Firstly, I am well aware that there are characters whose chapters are more dramatically different from the Two Rivers’ gang than Elayne’s do! But I expect, for example, that an Aes Sedai Sitter will be in a very different place in her life, and one of the Forsaken will have very different priorities, and a sul'dam will have a different worldview… Elayne, on the other hand, comes from a - comparatively - similar culture as the Two Rivers folk; she’s a similar age, leaves home not long after they do and shares in many of their adventures; she is similarly central to the overall story.  And while these characters all have different personalities and end up in different places, doing different things, they nevertheless still go through similar sorts of experiences. Coming to terms with their abilities, assuming positions of responsibility, commanding armies, being underestimated by those who think they are too young, learning how to be an effective leader and so on… Yet Elayne does not have quite as much in common with the others than they do with each other, and not merely because she didn’t grow up with them.

(Before I repeatedly compare Elayne’s adventures and achievements to those of the Two Rivers gang, it seems worth noting that I don’t believe that Elayne’s story is inherently inferior because it’s different. It is just different.)

Part of this different vibe is simply due to Elayne being at home. She is the only character who gets to return to their childhood home and stay there. (The closest any one else comes is Perrin… but his home is no longer standing and although he gets to build a new one, he does not get to stay there long.) And even though the palace isn’t exactly the same home Elayne remembers - corridors seem to move unexpectedly and her mother is no longer around - it still feels like home.

She is actually dealing with many of the same things that the others are: armed forces and warfare; moving corridors; spoiling food; politics. Yet because she’s at home (and will likely need to stay at home, even once she’s secured her throne), her situation seems much more stable - more bearable. As if it could drag on and on… Oh, it wouldn’t be fun for anyone if it did drag on, but Elayne would still get to sleep in her own bed at night. Whereas for characters who are travelling - for instance, Mat or Perrin - there’s a greater sense that their current adventures have an end in sight and that in the interim, anything could happen.

Why Is Everybody So Totally in Awe of Doctors?

By everybody, I mean including a whole bunch of anti-vaxxers, Christian Scientists and even a few chiropractors. Statistics will bear me out. Or they would if I had any. Since I don’t, I’m going to have to rely on irrefutable empirical proof.

Going back to the 1930s, there were Dr. Kildare movies and soap operas, Young Doctor Malone and Dr. Christian. TV’s General Hospital has been on air since the early sixties and according to Guinness World Records, is the longest-running TV soap still in production.

At one time, the winning formula for a book was one about Lincoln’s doctor’s dog because people wanted to read about doctors, Lincoln and dogs. Updated to this century, a book would still include doctors and dogs with a touch of the living dead. The Zombie Doctor and the Corgi reeks of runaway best seller — or maybe that’s just the Zombie Doctor.

Don’t forget those reality shows like eye-popping, pimple-popping surgeons and weight-loss gurus whose Texas y’alls come with a Persian accent. In short, popular culture is up to its navel in doctors. Including TV’s Hennessey (‘59 – ‘62) about a USN physician and you could say popular culture’s up to its navel in Naval doctors. You could say it. I wouldn’t.

ANYWAY, why this fascination with the medical profession where doctors are invariably portrayed as selfless humanitarians — sensitive, caring, creative, ingenious, even brilliant? Yes, yes. Senator Rand Paul and Dr. Victor Frankenstein are often noted as exceptions to the rule.

Selfless humanitarians? Like an undertaker who earns his living from people dying, a doctor earns his from people getting sick or shooting each other or eating green salami in week-old clam sauce — in other words from others’ misfortunes.

Creative? The medical arts aren’t arts at all. Rather than creative (like writing for example), medicine and occupations such as plumbing and auto mechanics rely on using proven formulae in a tried and true manner. Put peg A into slot B and the outcome will be C. Prescribe D and E should happen. If not, then F might solve the problem. And if one mode of treatment doesn’t work, there’s always another course of treatment…hopefully. Rather than art, a better description of what doctors do is practice.

Rather than creativity, medicine requires excellent recall, an ability to pronounce the names of myriad diseases, body parts and medicines in English and Latin, a decent computer with access to the latest information in the field and not being terribly squeamish about blood, urine, feces and unpleasant malodorous bodily functions.

It’s a fact that no matter what evidence might be presented to the contrary, the public has been indoctrinated to believe doctors are blessed, as the old Superman TV show intro explained, “with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men”.

Today, both doctors and the public seem to have concluded that being extraordinarily blessed entitles medical practitioners be accorded a deference usually reserved for potentates and TikTok dancers with millions of followers.

The best example is the first time a patient is introduced to a doctor.

The patient, we’ll call him John Smith, waits in an open-back dressing gown on a paper-covered examination table in a room that’s often thirty degrees colder than Nome in November, the chill so pernicious John develops visions of polar bears. Looking for a distraction as the seconds slowly drag by tick after tick, he turns to his phone to pass the time. No signal.

With nothing else to do after reading each wall poster three times, he resorts to counting holes in ceiling tiles.

At last, there’s a rap on the door. It’s flung open and a preoccupied doctor eyeing a chart, rushes in glancing at the patient. “John, I am Dr. Jeckle.” It’s never “Mr. Smith, I’m Dr. Jeckyll” or “John, I’m Dr. Jeckyll, please call meHenry.”

Preathfics Madness: AU Edition

Welcome to the AU bracket of Preathfics Madness co-sponsored with @hardtchill​

If you haven’t been here before, the game is simple: all we need you to do is vote for your favorite fics in a series of head-to-head competitions. This bracket will have 5 rounds. The first round is the Round of 32 (you’ll vote on 16 pairs of fics). Those fics that get the most votes will advance the round of 16 and voting will happen again.

This round will end January 25 at 11:59pm in the last time zone on earth.

Methodology: To qualify, the fic must have had T+C as its primary romantic couple rather than as a backdrop to some other couple (e.g., KMewett) and must have been non-soccer AU—that is neither of them play soccer in a substantive way (e.g., professionally, currently for their school). I solicited nominations from you all. I used a random-number generator (i.e., the RAND function in excel) to create the pairings. Some nominations were removed because they played soccer.
